Loveliest harbour in Spain

Port d’Andratx is a charming, picturesque port in the southwest of the island with a stylish, affluent and international atmosphere built from the mid-20th century around the existing fishing port and separate from the much older Andratx town.

Considered by many to be the loveliest harbour in Spain, the port with its long natural bay attracts the yachting fraternity from far afield and the rich and famous own villas that you can see taking up prominent positions on the hillsides.

The port is surrounded by stunning scenery, including clear blue waters, rugged cliffs, and lush green hills. It is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes, making it a great spot for a leisurely lunch or an evening out. The port is also popular for its nightlife, offering a variety of bars and clubs for those looking for a lively night out.

One of the standout features of Port d’Andratx is its marina, which is home to a range of yachts, boats, and fishing vessels. Port d’Andratx has a pleasant promenade where you will find a good assortment of art galleries, estate agents, restaurants & bars. Waterfront meals in the port are highly recommended, the bustle of daily life in a working fishing port and the stunning views just add to the whole restaurant experience.

Within the port there are a couple of very small coves with bathing areas which can quickly become crowded during the summer months. If you want a beach experience, we recommend the nearby resorts of Sant Elm and Camp de Mar, which both have larger sandy beaches.

Local attractions

In addition to its marina and beach activities, Port d’Andratx is surrounded by beautiful countryside, making it a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. Visitors can explore the stunning cliffs, hills, and valleys that surround the port, taking in breathtaking views of the coast and the surrounding landscape.

Local attractions include the remains of the watchtowers of Sant Francesc & Sant Carles and the remains of La Trapa monastery close to Sant Elm with jaw-dropping views of Sa Dragonera island. Also worth visiting is the ancient town of Andratx.

The average cost to rent a motorboat for 6 people in Port d’Andratx is around €400 per day in low season and €500 per day in high season. For a RIB, it would cost around €450 per day in low season and €600 in high season.

What is the climate like in Port d’Andratx?

The weather.

The weather in Port d'Andratx is generally pleasant all year round. During the winter, the temperature is cooler with an average of around 15 degrees Celsius. You will also experience higher chances of storms and rain. However, during the summer months of July and August, it is around 35 degrees Celsius and dry weather. These months are also peak season for tourists. Therefore, if you want to go rent a boat when the weather is still warm, but not filled with tourists, it is recommended to rent during April-June and September to October.

Notably, as Port d’Andratx is on the southwest side of the Balearic Island, it receives less wind than other parts. What sets Port d’Andratx apart from other harbours in the Balearic Islands is that it has so much more than beautiful beaches. In terms of scenery, it is surrounded by striking mountains and nature parks that allow for hikes and sight-seeing. Specifically, you can make your way to Sa Dragonera Island to find a protected nature retreat. You will find steep cliffs off the island with a plethora of unique flora and fauna such as Eleonara falcons, endemic Balearic lizards, and seafaring birds. If you rent a boat in Port d’Andratx, it will only take you around 20 minutes to arrive and is perfect for a day trip.

There are also many cultural experiences that you can witness in Port d’Andratx while on your yacht charter. The bodies of those found in the search for six people missing after the sinking of a luxury yacht during a storm off the coast of Sicily are being recovered from the wreckage.

Five bodies have now been brought to shore in the small fishing village of Porticello, around 11 miles from the Sicilian capital of Palermo.

Technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were lost when the Bayesian was hit by a storm and sank at around 5am on Monday.

The bodies of the missing men onboard the luxury yacht, as well as the boat’s chef, have now been recovered.

The family of Jonathan and Judy Bloomer have also confirmed the couple have died.

– Mike Lynch

British technology tycoon Mr Lynch founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, and made his name as one of Britain’s most influential entrepreneurs.

In June, the 59-year-old was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an 11 billion dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

The boat trip was a celebration of his acquittal.

Of the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15 – including Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares – were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat.

Mr Lynch was born in Ilford, east London, brought up in Essex and was the son of a nurse from Co Tipperary and a fireman from Co Cork who enjoyed childhood summers in Carrick-On-Shannon and Tipperary where he had family.

He went to Cambridge University and started his first business while studying for a PhD in signal processing and communications research.

He was made an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006. That same year, he was appointed to the board of the BBC, and was later elected to then-prime minister David Cameron’s council for science and technology in 2011.

David Tabizel, Mr Lynch’s Autonomy co-founder, said: “The world has lost a genius. His family have lost a giant of a man.”

Mr Lynch was a member of the Create The Change fundraising board, set up by Cancer Research UK, which helped fund the building of the Francis Crick Institute.

Chairman Lord John Browne, who described him as “a human being of great ability”, said: “Mike Lynch should be remembered as the person who catalysed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK.

“His ideas and his personal vision were a powerful contribution to science and technology in both Britain and globally.”

He became a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008, which paid tribute for his “active role” as a “mentor, donor and former council member”. He was an inaugural member of the enterprise committee.

On Thursday, the technology industry group TechUK also described him as “a hugely significant and pioneering figure in the UK technology sector”.

The Morgan Stanley International bank chairman is a prominent businessman who holds a number of boardroom roles after an extensive career in financial services.

He was the chief executive of global finance group Prudential between 2000 and 2005, and is chairman of Morgan Stanley International as well as Hiscox and property business SDL.

Mr Bloomer was among those to give evidence as a defence witness for Mr Lynch, and media reports suggest the pair are close friends.

Mr Bloomer’s wife Judy worked as a psychotherapist for nearly 30 years, specialising in anxiety and stress.

In a statement confirming their parents’ deaths, the Bloomer family described the couple as “incredible people and an inspiration to many”.

They said: “We are grieving for our loved ones and all of those affected by the tragedy.

“Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren.

“Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.

“This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder.”

Ms Bloomer was a trustee and long-time supporter of gynaecological cancer research charity the Eve Appeal.

She studied English language and literature at Homerton College, Cambridge, and previously worked as a teacher.

Mr Morvillo, 59, a partner at law firm Clifford Chance, represented Mr Lynch during the long-running criminal fraud trial where he was eventually cleared of all charges.

His long career included representing corporate and individual clients in white-collar government investigations, related regulatory and civil proceedings, and internal investigations.

Mr Morvillo had previously been a federal prosecutor, working on cases related to the 9/11 attacks and securing the conviction of lawyer Lynne Stewart for assisting terrorism during his time as assistant US attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1999 and 2005.

A Clifford Chance spokesperson said: “We are heartbroken at the tragic passing of our partner, Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda.

“We are deeply saddened and still coming to terms with this terrible loss. Our utmost priority is to continue to support Chris’s family at this very distressing time. Our thoughts extend to the families and loved ones of all those affected.

“We wish to express our deepest condolences and our love and support to Chris’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We also want to thank the Italian authorities and rescue teams for everything they have done.”

The first body recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday was that of Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the Bayesian superyacht, the Italian coastguard told Sky News.

In a tribute shared on Tuesday, Gareth Williams, a friend of Mr Thomas, told the BBC: “I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit.”

Mr Thomas grew up in Antigua and spent his time there during the off-season, Mr Williams said.

Another friend, Eli Fuller, told the outlet Mr Thomas was “friends with everybody”, “always positive” and “sought after” in his profession.

Divers find 5 bodies during search of yacht wreckage off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday and searched for one more as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Rescue crews unloaded three body bags from rescue vessels that pulled into port at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said two other bodies had also been found in the wreckage for a total of five.

The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and that no signs of life had emerged over three days of searching, maritime experts said.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was recovered Monday — that of the ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, of Antigua.

Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but would visit his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, moving permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua as the nationality of someone on board.

The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial.

Lynch’s spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

What caused the ship to sink so quickly?

Meanwhile, investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy even though no formal suspects have been publicly identified.

Questions abound about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to sink so quickly, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors.

Was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat such as the Bayesian might have been retractable, to allow it to enter shallower ports?

“There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview.

The captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat, which came to the Bayesian’s rescue, said his craft had sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest, hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the storm, which was forecast, rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Karsten Bornersaid in a text message. But he said that might not have been a viable option for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

“So for the vessel to sink, especially this fast, you are really looking at taking water on board very quickly, but also in a number of locations along the length of the vessel, which again indicates that it might have been rolled over on its side,” Souppez said.

Italian coast guard and fire rescue divers continued the underwater search in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck’s depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in tag teams could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching.

The limited dive time is designed in part to avoid decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles.

“The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggests the operation's managers are trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive.

“It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said.

Additionally, the divers were working in extremely tight spaces, with debris floating around them, limited visibility and oxygen tanks on their backs.

“We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. “An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren’t normal conditions. We’re at the limit of possibility.”

“It’s not a question of entering the cabin to inspect it,” he added. “They’ve arrived at the level of the cabins, but it’s not like you can open the door,” he said.

The Italian coast guard said they had reinforced their dive teams and were using underwater remote-controlled robots, which can stay out for six or seven hours at a time and record the surroundings.

The lack of any signs of life and the recovery of bodies led outside experts to conclude that the search was now a recovery effort and investigation to determine how the tragedy had unfolded.
