The 61 metre ‘Lady Kathryn V’ yacht with her all white hull and superstructure is all ready to be launched at the Lurssen shipyard in Germany (Lürssen Werft Bardenfleth). Motor yacht ‘Lady Kathryn V’ is a full displacement vessel and she was previously known as project Coco and project 061 whilst under build. Images of the newly launched yacht will be supplied when she has been officially launched and delivered to the yacht’s owner by Lürssen. That is scheduled to take place this 2011 summer season where superyacht Lady Kathryn V will be cruising Europe and the Mediterranean where she is available for luxury yacht charters. The yacht also has plans to go further afield to the Caribbean and elsewhere.

M/Y Lady Kathryn V, at just over 200 feet LOA, was preceded by the Lurssen built superyacht Linda Lou yachts and was similarly externally designed by Espen Øino of Espen Oeino International. The M/Y Lady Kathryn V yacht is a successor in name to the American built Westport 164 and other smaller yachts before that. The new Lurssen Lady Kathryn V yacht was constructed from aluminium and steel – with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure.

The interior design of the yacht Lady Kathryn V was designed by Adam Lay , from Adam Lay Studio. She sleeps up to a maximum of 12 guests overnight making her ideal for yacht charters. Her accommodation layout includes an owners’ master suite which is situated on the main deck and a VIP stateroom up on her bridge deck. There are a further four double ensuited guest cabins positioned down on the yacht’s lower deck.

Oceanco Koru Superyacht

With a combined length of 2,929 feet, the world’s top 10 superyachts scheduled for delivery this year are moving away from the idea that yachting is about whose boat is bigger. The trend is now more about mission than size. This year’s launches will be wide ranging, from motoryachts to sailing vessels, explorers and even a giant sportfish.

The list includes offerings from German shipyard Lürssen , which has two 400-foot-plus yachts ready to splash this year, with noteworthy deliveries from other shipyards in Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands showcasing different definitions of design, power and performance.

Here are the yachts we can’t wait to see.

‘Koru’ (564 feet) Oceanco

yacht v launch

Jeff Bezos’ first yacht, Koru , was spotted last week on sea trials. The Amazon founder chose to make a bold design statement by commissioning the world’s largest sailing yacht, not to mention the longest pleasure vessel, motor or sail, ever from The Netherlands. Built by Oceanco, the titanic sailing machine is an incredible 3300 GT, powered by kinetic energy generated by the sails. Besides its massive length, its classic canoe stern, a double-deck wooden coach house and navy hull with a red stripe differentiate Koru from any other vessel on the water. The project remains hush-hush. Even the designers remain a secret.

‘Liva’ (387 feet, 1 inch) Abeking & Rasmussen

yacht v launch

Launched late last year and scheduled to be delivered in early 2023, Liva is the largest yacht built by Abeking to date, overtaking the German shipyard’s previous flagship Aviva by 65 feet. The French studio Joseph Dirand Architecture was commissioned to pen both the exterior and interior, which is reported to include a semi-submerged underwater observation room on the lower deck, a supersized pool, helipad, spa with sauna and beauty salon, and a lower-deck beach club.

‘Alchemy’ (216 feet, 5 inches) Rossinavi

yacht v launch

Commissioned by a private American client, the 216-foot multi-deck motoryacht Alchemy is one of three yachts to be launched by Italian shipyard Rossinavi in 2023. Exterior design is by Philippe Briand, with interior styling by Enrico Gobbi’s Team for Design. Little information has yet to be revealed, though it’s visible from images that the custom yacht features an axe bow, drop-down side terraces at the stern and large floor-to-ceiling windows that afford views from all levels.

Project Jag (400 feet) Lürssen

yacht v launch

The 400-foot displacement motoryacht known only as “Project Jag” is reported to be the owner’s third Lürssen. His most recent is Kismet . It is set for delivery in late 2023. Capable of sleeping 20 guests and 40 crew, the gigayacht is equipped with a helipad, spa, swimming pool, two cinemas, gym and storage for a sub. Italian design firm Nuvolari Lenard designed the steel yacht’s exterior, while UK studio Reymond Langton has crafted what is rumored to be a “bespoke homage to the owner’s lifestyle”—whatever that means.

Project Luminance (426 feet, 5 inches) Lürssen

yacht v launch

Project Luminance is a 426.5-foot motor yacht that Lürssen claims will be one of the largest and most technologically advanced boats in the world. It’s also the largest yacht due to deliver in 2023. Construction began in 2018, yet few details have been revealed. What we do know is that the seventh-largest project to ever come out of the German shipyard to date features state-of-the-art propulsion systems, advanced navigation and communication systems, as well as next-generation entertainment.

‘T52’ (170 feet) Baglietto

yacht v launch

The first model in Baglietto’s T52 line, which splashed in February 2023, features sleek lines and aerodynamic grills penned by Francesco Paszkowski Design. Power comes from a diesel-electric-hybrid propulsion system. The yacht celebrates outdoor space, including a large multi-level beach club at the stern with a fold-down transom, oversized sunbeds and a swimming pool with a floor that rises flush with the deck. Sliding windows on the upper deck convert space into an open-air sky lounge and a 78-foot sundeck with a glass-encased hot tub.

Project 406 (170 feet, 6 inches) Royal Huisman

yacht v launch

The Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman made its name building some of the world’s largest sailing yachts, including 296-foot Athena , but now it’s hitting the record books again with the impending launch of Project 406 , the world’s largest sportsfisherman. Naval architecture, exterior and interior are by Dutch studio Vripack. The firm gave the six-decked aluminum yacht a towering profile promising spectacular front-row views of the big game fishing action. The team balanced its height by a long bow, high bulwarks and uncluttered fishing cockpit.

‘Black Shark’ (252 feet, 6 inches) Nobiskrug

yacht v launch

Black Shark first began construction in 2019, but all work ceased when Nobiskrug later filed for insolvency. In March 2022, following the German shipyard’s acquisition by entrepreneur Lars Windhorst, work on Black Shark recommenced, with delivery set for 2023. The 252-foot boat, designed by Winch Design, gets its name from its predatory profile and mast shaped like a dorsal fin. A reverse bow, black matte hull and metallic silver superstructure will also help to enhance the marine connection.

‘Ultra G’ (196 feet, 8 inches) Heesen

yacht v launch

Heesen is renowned for building fast boats, so it’s no surprise that Ultra G , equipped with a propulsion package totaling 22,000 horsepower, with four water jets and a top speed of 37 knots. The Dutch yard hailed this as its most powerful project to date. The motoryacht was commissioned by an avid sportfisherman, with a fighting chair and storage for 40 rods. Entertainment was also a big mandate for the design, stretching from Samsung’s “The Wall” screen, an infinity pool, and a dedicated self-cleaning “dog park” for furry guests.

‘Maverick’ (145 feet, 3 inches) Cantiere delle Marche

yacht v launch

Maverick is the first Flexplorer 142 to soon be delivered by Cantiere delle Marche (CdM), bought by a young German who is a keen sailor and serial owner of both sailing boats and motoryachts. The owner’s itinerary will see him cruising the Mediterranean, before heading to the Northern latitudes to cross the Northwest Passage and put Hydro Tec’s bold exterior design and running surface to the test. Key features include a custom-built A-frame crane that sits flush on the deck when not in use, collapsible bulwarks that fold-down to reveal a 1,450-square-foot beach club, and an infinity pool at the transom.

The Largest Superyachts Launched So Far in 2023

By Frances Flannagan

In the lead up to the yacht show season, it is only fitting to take a look at the largest, most impressive launches of 2023 so far. From complex refits, to technically advanced, future-proof new builds, we take a look at the five largest launches of the year so far, according to Superyachts.com's Top 100 list of the largest yachts in the world.

145m - LUMINANCE

Builder: Lürssen

A highly anticipated project, LUMINANCE was launched in February this year; Lürssen’s eighth largest build and ranking as the 12th largest yacht in the world. Her details were kept tightly under wraps, contributing to her alluring nature, but it has been revealed that the exterior design is the work of Espen Øino , marking the thirtieth collaboration between the designer and shipyard. She is said to have an internal volume of 9,000 GT and a beam of 20 metres, whilst sporting a steel hull and aluminium superstructure.

According to Superyachts.com's Top 100 list, LUMINANCE ranks at 12th largest yacht in the world.

114m - Project Cosmos

In March, Lürssen’s 114.2m Project Cosmos was technically launched. Otherwise known as Project 13759, this is the first time that she was seen. Like LUMINANCE, very little has been revealed about her details, aside from her having an interior volume of around 6300GT, a beam of 18m, and a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure. Project Cosmos is the first Lürssen superyacht to feature new fuel cell technology, significantly reducing emissions by avoiding greenhouse gases.

From her technical launch, we can see that Project Cosmos has a large aft deck and swimming pool, as well as a cut-out that we can presume will house a tender. She is a highly impressive build, ranking as the 44th largest yacht in the world according to our Top 100 listings.

105m - 1050H

Builder: Oceanco

On the 10th of January 2023, one of the industry’s most closely-kept secrets was brought to light as Oceanco’s Project 1050H was launched. Neither a newbuild, refit, or conversion, this has been a fundamental rebuild of unprecedented scale, completely transforming a heritage superyacht.

Project 1050H is the first vessel that has been recreated to such an extent that no single element remains the same. This launch set the benchmark of future innovation in the industry: a future-proof vessel that is a testament to Oceanco’s desire to perfect even the most complex builds. She has a modern exterior aesthetic, with a completely new superstructure, with a fresh interior designed by Reymond Langton Design.

As well as being impressive aesthetically, her performance, technology and sustainable nature are all elements to be equally marvelled at. She is fully compliant with rigorous IMO Tier III standards alongside upgraded technological capabilities.

The launch of 1050H was certainly a celebrated start to 2023, whilst also ranking 63rd on our Top 100 list.

90m - Project 1601

Soon after LUMINANCE emerged from Lürssen’s Bremen facility, 90m Project 1601 was launched. Like LUMINANCE, her construction was kept very secretive, but her emergence  from the shipyard revealed a unique exterior profile, with prominent lines and a striking reverse bow design.

Espen Øeino is responsible for the exterior design, alongside the in-house team at Lürssen overseeing the naval architecture. Dölker & Voges Design have crafted the interior spaces, which are yet to be revealed.

84m - Project 710

Builder: Feadship

On the 20th April, Feadship’s 80m Project 710 was launched. She has earnt the honour of being one of Feadship’s most technically advanced and dynamic designs, so her launch sparked nothing but excitement.

As well as being aesthetically beautiful, with a low profile, horizontal styling features and clean shapes, she is also the perfect next step in Feadship’s path towards achieving the build of zero-emission superyachts by 2030, with an expected 90% reduction of total CO2 emissions. She is the perfect vessel for relaxation as well as entertaining, with an Aqua Lounge with massive windows below water level allowing for connection with the outdoors, as well as the ability to accommodate up to 14 people, making her just as sociable as she is stunning.

"It is a proud moment for me to see the nearing completion of this transformation, having personally been involved in returning 1050H to her birthplace for this ambitious project." Dr. Barwani, Chairman, Oceanco

About Enterprise V

The owner of this 51.20m yacht describes why Enterprise V was the favorite of his four ships: 'I guess what really stands out is her dark blue hull. We've taken her to Europe and back to the Caribbean five times and up and down the Eastern seaboard. She's got lots of miles on her and still works great. I have always thought that the real test of a boat is how she looks ten years after being built. With a Feadship, you just put on a coat of paint and it is as good as new. Historic launch of world’s largest sloop, Mirabella V

Yachting World

  • November 27, 2003

David Glenn joined the crowds thronging the banks of the River Itchen to watch the world's largest sloop Mirabella V emerge from VT's Woolston yard, the last yacht to launch from this famous ship-building site

The much awaited and considerably delayed launch of Joe Vittoria’s 247ft (75.20m), £30 million, Mirabella V, the world’s largest sloop, took place at the VT shipyard at Woolston in Southampton today in front of hundreds of people lining the banks of the River Itchen.

Due down the ways at 1200 GMT after Vittoria’s wife Luciana had released the traditional bottle of christening champagne, the 500-ton composite hull, minus its 150-ton lifting keel, had to be given a nudge with a hydraulic ram to set it off along its greased wooden slipways.

Mirabella V should have been launched some six months ago and the tallow that had been put in place between the runway and the wooden cradle, in which the yacht sat, had hardened over time causing a 15-minute delay.

The event was historic in more ways than one. Not only is Mirabella V the largest sloop in the world but it is the last vessel ever to be launched at VT’s Woolston yard which has been sold and will shortly be demolished. According to VT’s press officer Phil Rood more than 600 ships have been launched from this site in the company’s 100 years history. “It seems fitting that the last vessel to go down the ways is the biggest of her type. It’s an historic moment.”

As we stood watching and waiting for the massive hull to slide into a sun-bathed Itchen River following a night of storms, a great cheer from the 250 VT ship workers and Joe Vittoria’s guests signalled the moment had arrived and the gleaming, white painted hull slid effortlessly towards us. Her broad stern created more of a wave than a splash but the precision operation went smoothly with only inches to spare either side of the hull. Divers were sent down to remove the cradle still attached to the hull and then Mirabella was shepherded alongside a nearby wharf by tugs.

Mirabella V will be towed to Portsmouth on Sunday 30 November where she will be moored alongside in the Naval dockyard to have the steel fin of her lifting keel lowered into its casing through an opening in the deck. She will then be floated into a flooded dry dock on the floor of which will be the bulb of the 150-ton keel. The dock will then be drained, the steel encapsulated bulb offered up to the fin and the two sections welded together. If observers think the hull of this extraordinary yacht is impressive, wait until they see the mast. The 285ft (87m) carbon fibre tube is still in the Porchester yard of Halmatic (owned by VT) where is was constructed but it will shortly be taken on a barge to Empress dock in Southampton where it will take a team of riggers two weeks to dress it during December. The standing rod rigging from Ocean Yacht Services, weighs 15 tonnes alone and each Bamar furler for the headsails more than 3.5 tons each. As John Channon of Bamar said: “Every job needed to dress the mast will take a team!” The plan is to step the mast between Christmas and the New Year. Nobody can be quite sure when the first sailing trials will take place but the most optimistic prediction is late January 2004. Certainly by February or March Mirabella V will be preparing for her first outing and Yachting World and yachtingworld.com will be there to record yet another remarkable moment in sailing history.

Mirabella V is owned by Joe Vittoria who sold the car rental company Avis Inc in 1987 after becoming chairman and CEO. Together with Mirabella C and Mirabella 111C, both sailing yachts of more than 130ft (40m), he will charter Mirabella V to a maximum of 12 guests who will pay US$250,000 a week for the yacht. Mirabella V’s first charter obligation will be the Cannes film festival in May and next winter she will head for the Caribbean.

Palm Beach International Boat Show returns to West Palm Beach waterfront

yacht v launch

The Palm Beach International Boat Show returns this week with more nearly 1,000 vessels on display, including super yachts from around the world.

Tickets are on sale now for the show that runs March 21-24 along the West Palm Beach waterfront.

The show, which started in 1982, has grown to a major economic engine for the community, with last year's impact estimated at $1.05 billion statewide — nearly as much as the $1.3 billion Miami International Boat Show, said Alyssa Freeman, executive director of the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, which owns the boat show.

More: Cool front for South Florida won't be its last even with the first day of spring here

"Palm Beach is really not that far behind Miami, and Miami is the biggest in the world," Freeman said. "That was really exciting."

This year's boat show features an expanded Super Yacht Show at Palm Harbor Marina, showcasing yachts that typically stretch longer than 80 feet and have a variety of luxurious amenities that include hot tubs, crew quarters, dance floors and sun decks.

"We have more super yachts there than we ever have before, and they're even bigger," Freeman said, noting that at 236 feet, the vessel Casino Royale takes the title of largest yacht at this year's show. The title of "most expensive yacht" goes to Come Together, a 196-foot vessel priced at $59.95 million.

"Everybody, when they think about super yachts, they think about Monaco and Miami, but Palm Beach is a real player in these boat shows and the yachting world," Freeman said.

Exhibitors continue to be drawn to the Palm Beach International Boat Show by the opportunity for high sales year after year when compared with other South Florida boat shows, she said.

"I've heard from several of them, this is their favorite show to attend," Freeman said, "And that's why, because their sales are higher at Palm Beach."

The show continues to make headway in improving its sustainability efforts, she said. After reducing single-use plastics, a major change this year is the addition of water bottle refilling stations throughout the show, Freeman said.

"I think that's exciting because everybody's talking about sustainability and how we can be more sustainable," she said. "Every year, we take little steps to be more sustainable."

Freeman said she is excited for this year's AquaZone presented by Nautical Ventures. The attraction showcases some of the "yacht toys" that are new or popular on the market.

"It's so cool, because there are people actually in the water demoing yacht toys, and it's usually the latest and greatest," she said. "There's always something new every year that we've never seen before."

The Palm Beach International Boat Show also features a range of seminars, demonstrations and discussions throughout the weekend, including mental health in yachting, tips to boat to the Bahamas, safe boating to protect sea turtles and how to address active threats and piracy.

Freeman, who has children, said she loves the Kids Fishing Clinics scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with captain Don Dingman.

"Captain Don has been doing this for years, and he does a fantastic job," Freeman said. "The kids actually get to go home with a free rod and reel once the clinic is over."

The association produces the Palm Beach International Boat Show with Informa Markets' U.S. Boat Shows division.

"As we gear up for the 2024 Palm Beach International Boat Show, we are excited for our return to Downtown West Palm Beach to celebrate the rich history of this esteemed event," Andrew Doole, president of U.S. Boat Shows at Informa Markets, said in a news release. "Each year, we’re grateful for the warm welcome and support from the community, which truly makes this event a highlight on the calendar for both residents and visitors alike."

Informa also produces the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show happening March 21-24, at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. A Windward VIP ticket to the boat show includes admission to the art show as well.

In addition to serving as a cornerstone festival of spring in West Palm Beach, the boat show launched the Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back program to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions to local nonprofits, Freeman said.

The grant program had a soft launch last year and formalized the boat show's four-decade practice of giving back to the community, Freeman said.

"We're really excited about it," said Freeman, who added that the boat show team is working with the Community Foundation to manage the grant program, which they hope to grow. "That's something that's a super high priority for us."

Money raised through a portion of the boat show's ticket sales, optional add-ons and some related activities goes toward the fund.

The boat show in February announced that the first round of grants totaling $500,000 would go to 25 nonprofits that have marine-related programs or projects, including Florida Fishing Academy, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Florida Atlantic University, Inlet Grove High School, Palm Beach State College, Sea Turtle Adventures and Friends of Manatee Lagoon.

"We're hoping one day we'll be able to say that it's a million dollars," she said. "So fingers crossed. It relies on the success of the boat show and the support of the community. With that, we will continue to grow."

What: Palm Beach International Boat Show.

Shamrock V: How an original J Class is being restored to win back her glory

There are only three of the original J Class fleet in existence today and the only wooden J, Shamrock V , is currently undergoing a bow-to-stern restoration at Saxon Wharf in Southampton . Katia Damborsky finds out how Shamrock V is preparing to rejoin the regatta circuit.

At some point between 1848 and 1931, Scottish yachtsman and tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton said: “Never despair, keep pushing on”. Perhaps it was one of his five America’s Cup defeats that inspired these words, as he resolutely entered a string of wooden sailing yachts named Shamrock into the competition and graciously accepted the loss each time.

His fifth and final defeat was on board his largest Shamrock yet — a 36.5-metre wood- Bermudan-rigged sailing yacht, built in wood and steel and therefore known as a “composite” yacht at the time. She hit the water at Camper & Nicholsons’ Gosport shipyard in 1930 and in the 93 years since then, she has lived a good life — although the last few years have been a “sad little bit in her history,” admits Paul Spooner, the designer and naval architect leading an ambitious restoration project.

Work on the vessel began last year in Southampton, but before that she was laid up in the same spot as she is now with years of general wear and tear plus the effects of a turbulent race at the St Barths Bucket in 2017. “She was in trouble structurally,” says Spooner, and when she changed hands in 2022 the new owner decided to gut her and carry out extensive bone-deep repair work.

She is a shell of a yacht when I visit her, stripped down to the steel ribs with interior components ripped out, wrapped up and neatly labelled ready to be reinstalled. When she originally raced with Sir Lipton, she didn’t have a proper interior. In 1937 she was briefly owned by an Italian who named her Quadrifoglio (meaning cloverleaf in English; facist ruling at the time meant she couldn’t have a foreign name) and, in true Italian style, bequeathed her with some tasteful maple and mahogany.

Next to the interior components are shoulder-high stacks of teak wood planks, each of which is being painstakingly reconditioned and replaced by the team now that all the frames and supports have been refurbished. Camper & Nicholsons reinstalled the wood in 1970 after the original mahogany started to show its age. Most of her major refit and maintenance periods have been in the United Kingdom, where she was built. Her commissioning owner, Lipton, hailed from Glasgow but he had a strong Irish heritage, hence the name Shamrock and the deep emerald hull colour. Fittingly, his maxim “never despair, keep pushing on” bears striking similarity to the infinitely catchier “keep calm and carry on”, a tagline that appeared eight years after Lipton’s death and has since become a synonym of British culture.

In 2000, she popped into Pendennis’ Falmouth facility for a refit and maintenance works. Spooner and a couple of the 25 people working on the project now were involved in the refit back then, building the deckhouse, skylight and hatches. “ Shamrock’s got to be the biggest wooden racing yacht in the world,” says Giles Brotherton, lead shipwright on the project today, who also worked on her when she was at Pendennis. “She’s got a lot of history to her. It’s nice to be a part of it.”

The next chapter of Shamrock V ’s life will see her back on the regatta circuit (hopefully) by 2024. She’ll be a cruising yacht as well, enjoying the cove-studded coasts of the French Riviera, indolently idling in St Tropez alongside the owner’s other sailing yacht. The look will be much the same as when was originally launched, although the mast has been replaced with a painted aluminium one and the sailplan has been altered slightly.

Still, she will be recognisably the same Shamrock V, which splashed on 17 April, 1930. You can still find grainy footage from the launch ceremony which shows the Countess of Shaftesbury — who also attended the launches of now-lost Shamrock IV and Shamrock III — christen the yacht with a champagne bottle, alongside Lipton, who says: “I regard it as a great honour [to have] Lady Shaftesbury here today and ensure her presence will bring good luck for the new Shamrock .” In the presence of a crowd of people wearing shamrocks pinned to their lapels, the yacht rolls down the slipway and into the water, notably with at least twenty people standing around on the hull during what looks like a blustery day — health and safety be damned.

For Spooner, it is a relief that there are no major modifications being made. “The details get lost [during] modern changes, trying to do them in an authentic way,” he says. Spooner says the trend for restoration ebbs and flows, but his firm, Paul Spooner Design, has rarely been left twiddling its thumbs in the past thirty years.

“With these boats, you desperately need an owner who wants to do the right thing,” he says. Happily, Spooner feels like they have found one. Speaking previously to BOAT International , the owner calls himself a custodian of the vessel. “ Shamrock is coming up to her centenary and we are preparing her for her next 100 years,” he says. “What has been striking is the depth and warmth of response to this refit. Everyone wants it to go well and for Shamrock to be back where she belongs”.

China and Taiwan launch joint rescue bid after boat capsizes near sensitive islands

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan dispatched coast guard boats on Thursday to join a rescue mission at China’s request after a fishing vessel capsized near the Taiwan-controlled Kinmen islands , amid heightened tension in the sensitive Taiwan Strait.

China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, over the island’s strong objections, and has stepped up military activities near it in recent years, with almost daily incursions into air defense identification zones.

Authorities on both sides sent the rescue boats after a Chinese fishing vessel capsized in the early hours, Taiwan’s coast guard said in a statement, adding that two people were missing, though two had been rescued and two bodies retrieved.

Coast guard chief Chou Mei-wu told a parliamentary committee the boats were sent after Chinese authorities sought help, adding that such requests were common, with 119 people rescued in such efforts over the past three years or so.

“The waters are narrow around the Kinmen-Xiamen (area) and co-operation between Taiwan and China is very important,” he said, referring to the neighbors’ cities that face each other across the strait.

Taiwan sent four coast guard vessels and its Chinese counterpart six to participate in the rescue effort, the coast guard said.

Last month, China’s coast guard began regular patrols around the Kinmen islands close to its coast, after two Chinese nationals died while trying to flee Taiwan’s coast guard after their boat entered prohibited waters.

The Chinese fishing boat capsized about 1.07 nautical miles west of Taiwan’s Dongding island, the coast guard said, with armed forces stationed there also engaging in the rescue, but did not elaborate.

In a statement, Taiwan’s Kinmen defense command said it had not received any request from Chinese authorities to search the island, but added that any survivors found would be handed to the coast guard.

Last week, Taiwan’s top China policy-making body urged its giant neighbor not to change the “status quo” around the waters there by sending coast guard boats into restricted areas, saying tension should be “controllable.”

By Nina Done   2 February 2023

Representing the newest addition to the prestigious Heesen fleet , the 60m (196ft) superyacht ULTRA G , previously known as Project Skyfall , hit the water during a ceremony which took place on January 27 from their Oss facilities in the Netherland's, marking the yard's first superyacht launch for 2023.

Described by Heesen as the “ultimate expression of the knowledge and experience gained in over forty years of shipbuilding to the finest Dutch quality standards”, the all-aluminum yacht marks a long-standing collaboration between designers, with Omega Architects providing her unique exterior lines, while her engineering and Fast Displacement Hull Form comes courtesy of Van Oossanen Naval Architects. Meanwhile, London-based studio Harrison Eidsgaard is responsible for her chic interior styling.

The superyacht has been custom-built and designed for a fishing enthusiast. Described by the yard as a “sport fisherman in yacht disguise”, yacht ULTRA G features a fully operable fish cockpit complete with a fighting chair and storage for 40 rods.

Superyacht luxury

When not reeling in big fishing game, the yacht has been primed for entertainment and relaxation, and bestowed with a wealth of amenities, including a media room featuring a vast 146-inch media wall, games area and custom wine fridge in her main salon, as well as an infinity pool on her sundeck.

She even flaunts her status as a dog-friendly yacht, equipped with a dedicated self-flushing “relief area” with synthetic grass, sensors, cameras and sprinklers.

Outstanding performance capabilities

Motor yacht ULTRA G also boasts exceptional power under the bonnet, with her 22,000 horsepower being generated by quad MTU 20V 4000 engines and four Kongsberg S90 waterjets, which help lower the yacht's draft to less than three meters and reduce vibration by 40 per cent compared with traditional shafts and propellers, for a smoother onboard experience. Under light load conditions, she is capable of delivering an impressive top speed of 37 knots.

She will be accompanied by a 24-meter custom built Vanquish tender, which has been designed in the mirror image of its mothership.

She will provide accommodation for 10 guests across five suites, including a master apartment positioned to offer complete privacy on her bridge deck, featuring a walk-in closet, large en suite with central oval tub and an intimate terrace with a Jacuzzi and inviting lounge area. Her remaining four cabins are found on her lower deck.

She is now ready for commissioning and will undergo rigorous testing in the North Sea, with delivery expected in the coming months following the successful completion of sea trials. It is not expected that superyacht ULTRA G will be available for charter once she’s delivered to her owner.

Tasmania Devils AFL club launched with name, colours, logo and guernsey concept revealed

Live Moment Tasmania Devils AFL club launched with name, colours, logo and guernsey concept revealed

Priscilla Odwogo and Rachael Duffy showing off the foundation jumper or guernsey design at launch of the Tasmania Football Club.

The colours, logo and foundation guernsey for Tasmania's AFL and AFLW team have been released — and they each hark back to decades of tradition.

The club will be known as the Tasmania Devils, they will wear green, yellow and red, and their guernsey will feature a map of Tasmania at its centre with a red "T".

All three elements have long been associated with football in Tasmania, and they have been formalised as the club edges closer to its long-awaited entry into the AFL in 2028.

Close-up of Tasmania Devils AFL team foundation jumper design.

They were announced at the club's launch tonight, held simultaneously at six locations around the state, in addition to 20 live stream sites.

Tasmania Football Club chair Grant O'Brien said it's an important milestone.

A man holds a football jumper.

"Today is a special day, one we have waited a long time for — and one we will remember for a long time," he said.

"Your club has been blown away by the community support shown at Monday night's launch events.

"It has been a truly special moment in our state's football history with thousands of Tasmanians joining in the cheers and tears as we, together, unveiled our club."

The Devils nickname was always going to be preferred, provided the club could avoid long and potentially costly negotiations with Warner Bros over the right to use the name.

The colours have been associated with Tasmanian football since 1908.

The main unknown was the logo, which shows a profile of a Tasmanian devil.

Mr O'Brien said it represented Tasmania's "proud, tough, determined" characters.

"Characters that are feisty and will fight for their survival in a uniquely Tasmanian way," he said.

"Our Tasmanian Devil is a free spirited, powerful, and authentic identity.

"We call this Devil 'The Wild'."

Tussle over the name? Apparently all is well

Following earlier reports the legal owner of the Tasmanian Devils name, US entertainment giant Warner Bros, were not willing to allow the Tasmanian club to use it, a joint statement issued by the company and the AFL states that has been resolved.

"Warner Bros Discovery and the AFL have come to an amicable agreement and look forward to seeing footy fans across Tasmania support the AFL's newest football club, the Tasmania Devils," the statement reads.

"The 'Devils' will no doubt be a club that unites the state and showcases the best of Tasmania."

As to whether money exchanged hands over the use of the name, and who foots that bill, is yet to be revealed.

Early reactions on social media to the guernsey have been mixed, with some appreciating the nod to Tasmania's football heritage, while others questioned the use of a state guernsey — a practice not employed in other states.

The long road to a Tasmanian AFL team

Regardless of the politics around the team and the stadium, the launch is a historic moment for Tasmanian football.

For 30 years, bids have come and gone.

A bid involving a 30,000-seat stadium at the Hobart showgrounds was knocked back.

A 2008 bid from then-premier Paul Lennon ended in ignominy – dismissed out of hand by then-AFL head Andrew Demetriou. This was despite strong private sector backing.

Ablett trains under the sun

And then came the entries of the Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney Giants, pushing back Tasmania's team by decades — if not forever.

Former AFL head Gillon McLachlan appeared to entertain the idea, but a 2018 report again ruled it out.

Tasmanians took the matter into their own hands, forming an AFL task force in 2019 and gaining tripartisan political support, again arguing the commercial case for a Tasmanian team.

The stadium question reared its head — Hobart would eventually need better facilities, but opinions were divided over whether the team comes first, or a new stadium.

An aerial graphic view of a stadium on the waters edge, city behind and sky

And in March, 2022, then-premier Peter Gutwein announced a 27,000-seat stadium at Regatta Point, contingent in the state getting a team.

He resigned, and the concept was moved to the adjoining Macquarie Point under new premier Jeremy Rockliff — following a visit to the city by AFL executives.

A concept design for an AFL stadium at Macquarie Point.

The stadium was formalised in writing as a condition of the team's entry, agreed to by the AFL Commission and club presidents.

The contract was signed in May 2023, after the Commonwealth agreed to provide $240 million for the precinct.

But in Tasmania, tripartisan political support was over.

Political fight ahead over Macquarie Point stadium

There is still a lot of work to be done before the team runs out for round one, 2028.

A $70 million high performance centre on Hobart's eastern shore should be ready, to ensure the club can attract and retain players.

And then there's the Macquarie Point stadium.

An aerial photo of the Macquarie Point precinct looking back towards the CBD and Mt Wellington.

The first season will be played at Bellerive Oval and York Park, with the Tasmanian government to pay the club $4.5 million per season if the new stadium isn't ready by round one, 2029.

The concept of a 23,000-seat, roofed stadium on that site — a condition for the team to enter the AFL — is being assessed by the Tasmanian Planning Commission on engineering, environmental, heritage and other planning grounds.

When that work is done, likely next year, it will need to pass both houses of parliament before construction can start.

A crowd of people hold signs at a rally saying 'no stadium'

By then, updated cost estimates should be known, with the original $750 million price tag another year older. There will also be detailed plans, and final answers to two burning questions: can it actually fit on the site? And how realistic is the 2029 completion date?

In the meantime, Labor leader Rebecca White has promised to renegotiate the deal with the AFL if she ends up premier after this weekend's election, focusing on the requirement for a stadium.

Regardless of the election result, the stadium will remain a political football.

Two politicians and the AFL chief are surrounded by children and young people dressed in Auskick or Tasmanian footy uniforms.

The Liberals under Jeremy Rockliff are likely to win more seats but still be in minority, facing a progressive crossbench.

Labor's best chance at governing would be via the Greens, or potentially a combination of independents Kristie Johnston, Sue Hickey, David O'Byrne and the Jacqui Lambie Network.

In both situations, the final stadium vote would hang by a thread.

'Yes AFL team, yes stadium' sticker on a black background.

And that's before it gets to the upper house, where Labor and Liberals have been able to combine for a majority in recent years. That situation could come to an end, if Labor's Josh Willie and Liberal Jane Howlett are elected to the lower house this weekend.

Their replacements in the upper house could be independents.

The club may have been launched, but the path to a stadium remains a challenge for the government, and potentially the AFL.

Live Moment

Look back at how ABC readers and other Australians responded to this live moment.

We'll leave our coverage here

As Tasmanians continue to celebrate this history-making occassion, we'll leave our coverage here for tonight.

Thanks for joining us!

Flinders and King Islands missing from guernsey

The guernsey is a very close match to one already used by Tasmanian representative sides, prompting questions on social media about whether the team should set itself apart from the state side — like in other states.

The map design also leaves off King Island and Flinders Island.

But the reception to the logo has largely been positive.

'The players aren't here yet, we are'

The official launch of the Tasmania Devils AFL and AFLW club finishes, with club chair Grant O'Brien hopeful football fans on the mainland will also join up as foundation members.

A presentation points out how Tasmanians have repeatedly been told their own team would "never happen", and congratulated the state on reaching this stage.

It finishes with the line: "The players aren't here yet, we are."

Wondering what this is? Join us next time we're live and be part of the discussion.

Alibaba claims it will launch a server-grade RISC-V processor this year

Alibaba continues to expand its RISC-V portfolio.

T-Head

Alibaba's research division, the Damo Academy, recently announced expansion of its RISC-V efforts, which includes the Xuantie C907 matrix compute core and the Xuantie C930 datacenter-oriented processor, according to  Sohu . The server-grade CPU is expected to be launched this year, reports  The Register .

One of the ways for Chinese companies to sidestep U.S. export curbs regarding high-performance computing and artificial intelligence technologies is by developing their own processors for AI and HPC based on their own cores (based on the RISC-V instruction set architecture, or ISA). Alibaba's T-Head chip division was one of the first companies to realize the potential of the RISC-V ISA a few years ago — so it has quite a lot of experience with the technology by now.

T-Head introduced its first RISC-V-based  Xuantie C910 processor  for client systems around two years ago and Alibaba has been selling PCs based on this CPU for a while. For some reason, the processor is no longer listed on the company's website. The same C910 core is used for the company's PCIe Gen5  Zhenyue 510 enterprise-class SSD controller  that are used for a variety of drives.

Now the T-Head Xuantie 930 processor is set to power servers, including those machines running artificial intelligence workloads — though it remains to be seen whether Alibaba plans to use them for its cloud datacenters, or for something else.

In addition, Alibaba's chip unit T-Head intends to introduce its Xuantie 907 matrix computing unit, though it's unclear whether we're dealing with a separate datacenter SoC for AI workloads or an IP core that can be added to another processor, say, to the Xuantie 910 or Xuantie 930.

"As the demand for new computing power surges, the development of RISC-V is undergoing a metamorphosis and is about to enter a period of application explosion," said Zhang Jianfeng, president of the Damo Academy. "The Damo Academy will continue to increase its R&D investment and ecosystem co-building in RISC-V, promoting collaborative innovation and development of the industry upstream and downstream."

Since native RISC-V technology is crucial for Chinese companies to avoid U.S. export curbs , it's developing very fast in China. As a result, hardware and software companies have been collaborating to create a competitive ecosystem around this ISA, the report from Sohu notes.

  • das_stig Always had this crazy thought in my mind for an open source NAS/router. Risk-V, open socket, choose your number of cores and speed 2-4 ram slots for large memory capacity. 4-8 bays, maybe NVMe and 2.5" SATA models 2 or more slots for off the shelf wifi cards for AP's 4+ LAN, minimum of 2.5G, maybe a couple of 10G, managed switch TrueNas/Unraid + open source router/linux + other software in isolated containers/jails/vm's and if made in bulk, reasonable prices for all the components, yes I can dream  Reply
