THE ALL-NEW SUNSEEKER 65 SPORT YACHT – TRAILBLAZER

With no introduction necessary, the all-new 65 Sport Yacht joins Sunseeker’s expanding range of next generation yachts with explosive innovation.

The 65 Sport Yacht is a truly unique project. The skilled team responsible for the new model has created something truly exceptional and unlike any other yacht in the mid-range market. Sunseeker’s dynamic integration of carbon fibre and the latest IPS drives maximises interior volume whilst enhancing performance but it is the integrated SkyHelm that is a revelation; delivering a dynamic helming experience within an almost invisible flybridge profile. With 2,000hp on tap, it’s going to be a blast!

Carbon fibre is used extensively to reduce weight, a key focus for delivering an exhilarating ride with an ability to cut through the water. An infusion of stainless steel accents and rich tinted hull glazing makes for a striking, one-of-a-kind creation. Her silhouette will be sure to dominate at sea, and in the marina.

The SkyHelm, complete with IPS docking joystick, can be used in an upright position for low speed manoeuvring or lowered to fall perfectly into outstretched arms when sat low in the bespoke helm seats, cossetted by carbon fibre back rests and an integrated centre console.

The innovative hull and IPS installation creates an expansive garage that can comfortably accommodate a Williams 345 Jet RIB with space to spare for SeaBobs, dive tanks or bicycles. Last but not least, when the tender is stowed on the bathing platform, a fully-featured Beach Club with optional Flexiteek floor can be specified, creating yet another entertainment space that brings you closer to the water than ever before.

Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht review: This is how driving a £3m boat should feel

With its Skyhelm concept, Sunseeker has transformed the driving experience from the flybridge, but is there more to the Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht than its brilliant helm station? Jack Haines joins it on a trip from Southampton to Poole to find out.

Where do you start with the Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht? The way it looks, maybe? Sleek, muscular and proportioned to perfection, it might be the best looking model in Sunseeker ’s current range.

Or maybe the accommodation? Three beautifully appointed cabins with access to their own equally impressive bathrooms. Then there’s the cavernous tender garage , which can swallow a Williams 345 and a Seabob but, with a teak-laid floor, optional overhead shower and a hi-lo bathing platform that elegantly glides down diagonal tracks into the water, could also be used as a beach club.

Let’s not forget the power. Volvo Penta IPS1350s (or 1200s, though it’s unlikely many will be built with the smaller engines) with a combined total of 2,000hp, which will propel this 38-tonne sportsbridge to a top speed a whisker shy of 35 knots.

The price? Well, all told, the one we tested came in at just under £3.1 million including VAT, which is quite punchy if you’re of the opinion that you’re getting half the amount of flybridge deck compared to a Manhattan.

This boat had some high-ticket items on board, though, like the £200,000 Mediterranean Package and £140,000 worth of Seakeeper 16 gyroscopic stabiliser.

The sportsbridge design may mean that you have less space to enjoy on the top deck but in this instance it is also home to the Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht’s trump card, the ace up its sleeve and a piece of fresh thinking design that is so successful it’s hard to believe it’s not been done before.

I’m talking about the ‘Skyhelm’. This consists of a pair of slender, bottom-hugging Besenzoni seats bolted directly to the deck and bisected by a robust aircraft-style central console that is home to the throttles, VHF, a wireless charging pad for a smartphone, an MFD and, at its peak, a pair of beautifully integrated bezelled instruments with analogue outers and configurable digital screens in the middle.

This means that in front of the helm seat there is simply a steering wheel (adjustable and the perfect size and thickness) and to the left of that, the IPS joystick; to the right the control for the Sleipner bow thruster.

You sit low – supercar low – with your legs stretched out in front of you and feet rested on a pair of foot plates. You can sit right back in the fabulous helm seat and grasp the wheel, which thrusts towards your chest, and it’s an easy reach to the stubby Volvo Penta throttle heads.

This is how you should sit to drive a boat. It feels natural, it feels right and it makes you wonder why manufacturers arrange dashboards with everything in front of you when having the controls between skipper and navigator makes so much sense.

Buying a 65-foot motoryacht for its upper helm might sound crazy, unless you happened to be in the market for a vessel that size. And even then, one feature does not make a yacht. But the new racing-style design of the Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht’s helm totally changes the boating experience—or in this case, the driving experience.

Most of the time, being at the helm of an 83-ton, 65-foot yacht is like watching paint dry. It’s a question of getting to your destination or anchoring somewhere to use the boat. Typically, driving means keeping the proper depths and making sure smaller vessels are out of the way. It’s rarely about having fun.

But the “Sky Helm” on the new 65 changes all that. The name sounds a bit pretentious, but after you sit down in the form-fitting Besenzoni racing-driver’s seat, adjust the steering wheel on the tilting column in front, and peg the throttle, it feels like a much smaller, nimble boat that’s moving faster than its 40-mph top end.

Leaning into turns, the horizon tilting and wind whipping through your hair, is unlike the typical motoryacht where you sit, half-engaged, in an upright helm seat. That is passive. This was active. Here you’re leaning back, close to the deck, legs comfortably way out in front. Think driving a sportscar as opposed to an SUV.

Enough gushing. From an owner’s point of view, the Sky Helm’s layout is well done. Two matching, slender Besenzoni seats are divided by a center console with the throttles, VHF, wireless charging pad for a smart phone and several instrument bezels with analogue outer screens and digital readouts that display the essential ship’s functions in the center. For the driver, it’s an easy-scan layout. The steering wheel tilts up so you can stand and dock the boat via joystick, with the ability to see everything below. Behind is a large sunbed for three, though passengers will definitely be leaning into the turns with the driver.

The boat we drove offshore of Fort Lauderdale into the Atlantic had twin 1,000-hp Volvo Penta 1350 IPS engines. Typically, hitting two- to four-foot seas in a big boat is a bit unnerving, but being so high off the water made it fun.

Beyond the flybridge, the design team also did a good job with the rest of the yacht. Like many boats these days, the UK builder focused on creating a more natural flow between the lower cockpit and inner salon, with a teak cockpit table for cocktails or dining, an outdoor grill and sunbed that hangs over the swim platform. The sliding glass door and glass panel over the outer bar, when open, creates a seamless feel between inside and out.

Sunseeker has been working hard on their interiors over the last three years and it showed on this yacht. The interior has a contemporary, residential look, and that shows up in the galley, which are often downright “boaty.” The 65’s kitchen has excellent counter space, with cooker and microwave, and refrigerator/freezer on the starboard side. Forward, the salon has a lounge and three-piece table on the portside and an entertainment center with a 55-inch, pop-up television to starboard.

The main helm station is more elaborate than the Sky Helm, with two seats, a carbon-fiber dash and Garmin all-glass console in the center. The salon also has a large overhead panel that opens to let fresh air in when the 65’s at anchor. The test boat, in a nod to Sunseeker’s British origins, had Royal Doulton dining ware in the cabinets.

Like the main deck, the design on the floor below had considerable thought put into it, both with the layout and the aesthetics. The full-beam main suite at the rear has an office in the passage to the bedroom, with a foldout seat. The sleeping space is generous, with large windows on either side, a side lounge with vanity, and spacious en-suite with a glassed-in shower. The television is part of the large mirrored wall.

The VIP stateroom forward is generous, given its position at the bow, with a double bed and en-suite. Stainless steel patterns are inlaid into the walls, including a stylized Sunseeker logo that lights up. Depending on taste, that could be a bit overkill, but it’s in keeping with the rest of the sport yacht.

The real standout feature on the 65 Sport Yacht is the Sky Helm, which is an option. It’s clearly the differentiator between this Sunseeker and a half-dozen competitors in this niche. We expect to see it popping up across multiple lines as it changes the driving experience.

Description

The Sunseeker 65 SPORT YACHT is a 16.30 m long draft bridge yacht with a draft of 1 m, premiered by a British shipyard in the fall of 2020. The exterior of the vessel combines tinted glass, teak, polished stainless steel and carbon fiber.

The Sportbridge is used as a ski lounge with a sofa and two seats with a swivel mechanism at the Sky Helm control post. Sofas are located aft of the galley and the entire width of the cockpit; an alternative layout provides for a sofa group in front of the sanitary door.

The master cabin 65 SPORT YACHT is located on the lower deck in the entire width of the hull; three guest cabins can accommodate up to 6 passengers. Optionally, the shipyard offers three different configurations: an office in the master cabin, a mini-galley or an additional single cabin.

A diagonally extendable bathing platform with hydraulic drive allows you to comfortably lower and raise the tender from the water. In the garage you can place a tender, carry diving equipment or SeaBob submarine towing vehicles.

If you store water equipment on the bathing platform, then the vacant garage space can be used as a multifunctional “beach club”. The recreation area is optionally equipped with a bar, barbecue, refrigerator or ice maker, seats.

Volvo Penta IPS engines with 1,200 or 1,350 hp allow the Sunseeker 65 SPORT YACHT to reach a maximum speed of 38 knots. Range without refueling is up to 300 nautical miles.

The large cockpit has a C shaped seating around a large convertible table and sunpad aft. just forward are bar stools with a drop window that integrates the cockpit and galley to the port side.The aft patio doors slide to starboard with no threshold step over to the open galley immediately to port and just forward is the extremely spacious salon. On the starboard side of the cockpit is a staircase that leads to the very sporty flybridge.

The well appointed gourmet galley with fine Miele appliances to port is the entertaining centerpiece.The salon has loads of comfy seating and coffee table are forward on the port side. The convertible dining table to starboard and a large television on a lift in front. Forward is the lower helm station with twin seats and a host of full Garmin electronics that also includes a side opening window.The interior is bright, spacious and created by the single pane of glass forward and the oversized side windows allowing plenty of natural light to flood the space.

The lower accommodations comprised of 3 spacious cabins all en suite. The inviting VIP is forward and on the starboard side a generous twin cabin and to port is a day head. Aft is the full beam Grand owner's stateroom that boasts a king sized berth with magical ocean views and has a full dressing area with large his and hers wardrobes to port and starboard. All the cabins have high ceilings and are finished with amazing levels of detail, fit and finish.

Sunseeker Predator 65 Reviewed

The Sunseeker Predator 65 is a 35-knot bundle of fun.

Based on the same hull as its sistership, the 65 Sport Yacht , the Predator 65 has an even purer profile. It eliminates features such as the 65 Sport Yacht’s upper deck, extra stairs, and sports-fly setup with a low-slung driving position, and instead offers a sliding carbon-fiber-and-glass sunroof—which means a proper open-yacht vibe on the main deck. There’s also a foredeck terrace and various cockpit furniture choices, along with a swim platform that can combine with the garage to create a beach club. Suffice it to say, during the day, the outdoors is awesome.

The standard cockpit setup includes a conventional transom sofa and a pair of bar stools to port. The stools help transform the aft-galley countertop into a bar, thanks to a drop-down electric window. Alternatively, an L-shaped sofa and bigger table to port can make the cockpit an even comfier alfresco hangout.

In addition to the galley aft, the salon has an amidships lounge and a two-seat helm offset to starboard. Amidships, flanked by full-height picture windows, the standard lounge area combines a booth sofa and an extendable table to port, and a two-seat sofa to starboard. An alternative layout loses the galley up so the lounge sofas to port can stretch all the way to the deck doors aft.

Sunseeker’s interiors have the sort of refinement found in high-quality cars, and that’s rare aboard boats. Take the bridge area, which is beautifully detailed and ergonomically clever. All the usual information is neatly presented on two Garmin touchscreen multifunction displays configured with Volvo Penta’s Glass Cockpit software, but I couldn’t take my eyes off a pair of small, round digital displays beneath them, providing essential driver information. Skippers choose what these round displays show by twisting a knob; speed, fuel state and rudder angle are what I wanted to see.

Belowdecks, the accommodations include a standard three or optional four staterooms, plus a day head. The owners’ space is amidships aft, with a forward-facing king berth, a vanity to starboard, a chaise lounge or breakfast booth for two to port, and a shower room to starboard. The VIP stateroom is in the bow, and a twin-berth en suite guest stateroom is to starboard.

There are four options for the amidships area to port, which is effectively the area outside the owners’ stateroom door. A utility area is standard. The Predator 65 that I got aboard, which was headed for the US East Coast, had this layout, with plenty of linen stowage and space for the washer-dryer. Another option is for this space to become a galley down or a section of an enlarged owners’ stateroom with a study. Or it can be turned into a mini salon or fourth stateroom, albeit with room for just a single bunk.

For power, owners can choose from twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13-IPS1200s or 1,000 hp D13-IPS1350s. All 65 Sport Yacht and Predator 65 orders to date have included the larger powerplants.

Sunseeker’s Predator boats have enviable handling reputations, and this one doesn’t disappoint. There was a serious breeze for our English Channel jaunt on board, which meant we had to pick our moments for pushing the throttles to their stops. Flat out at just over 2,400 rpm, the Predator 65 hit about 35 knots every time. This was running the yacht at around half-load and with an empty garage.

The eco-cruise range, in theory, could be as high as 1,100 nautical miles at 7.5 knots or 580 nautical miles at 10 knots. But given the need for speed of most Predator 65 buyers, 325 nautical miles at 23 knots is the more interesting calculation.

Personally, I prefer the Predator 65 to the 65 Sport Yacht. As good as the SkyHelm is on the 65 Sport Yacht—and it is very good—I never spend much time in the upstairs driver’s seat. Whereas, with a Predator 65, the roof would only ever close with the setting of the sun. 

Space to Spare

The Predator 65’s tender garage is supposedly 1.5 times wider than the Predator 74’s. It can house a 12-foot jet tender as well as several smaller toys. Fully decked out, it can help transform the stern into a beach club.

Inside Matters

Various light-dark schemes are available for the Predator 65. The boat I got aboard had the most popular combination: a dark, satin-sheen smoked eucalyptus with silver-oak soles. Other veneer choices include earth-gray oak, American black walnut and wenge, all in satin or high-gloss finishes.

Class Glass

The Predator 65’s double-curved, laminated windscreen is reportedly one of the biggest single panes of glass ever installed aboard a Sunseeker model.
