Top 15 Most Expensive Yachts In The World

Yachts were simple vessels at the time of their inception in the ’90s, designed primarily for water sports; however, in the 2000s, they were transformed into luxurious maritime structures.

Such superyachts are commissioned for the rich and combine technological excellence with a glorious display of opulence and power. Apart from being genuinely majestic and gigantic, these yachts have amazingly unique features, as we will see in this article featuring the most expensive superyachts in the world.

1. History Supreme – $4.8 Billion

The yacht History Supreme boasts of being the most expensive private superyacht in the world. It was constructed by the famous designer in Liverpool, Stuart Hughes, famous for turning ordinary gadgets like iPhones into luxury goods by covering them with precious metals such as gold or diamonds. Hence, the dining area, the railings, and anchor of the most expensive yacht in the world are adorned with priceless metals.

This magnificent yacht was made for a wealthy businessman hailing from Malaysia. Some news reports underlined the probability of Malaysian business tycoon Robert Kuok, the owner of this maritime wonder.

History Supreme

It is 100 feet and was completed in three years. Adorned with more than 10,000 kg of solid gold, silver and platinum, it is the most extravagant vessel. The yacht’s structure, anchors, deck areas, kitchen, and washrooms are made of precious metals. Its bottom is gold-plated, while the main bedroom has a walled structure made from a genuine meteorite and a decorative design carved from an authentic dinosaur tooth. 70 kg of gold was used only for making the lavish aquarium separating the main bedroom from the seating area.

Other features, such as expensive liquor in cases made of rare diamonds or the use of historical artefacts in its interior, are why the yacht is the most costly.

2. Eclipse – $1.5 Billion

Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire and politician and the famous owner of the soccer club Chelsea, is the proud possessor of the Eclipse, which comes second in the list of the most expensive yachts in the world.

Eclipse is estimated to be worth 1.5 billion dollars and was built by Blohm and Voss, a ship construction company headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. Terence Disdale, a renowned yacht designer who has renovated more than 40 superyachts, is responsible for the eye-catching interiors of the Eclipse.

Eclipse

How much does a yacht cost? The average prices and costs of yachts.

The UK has a long, rich maritime history and, as such, the yachting industry thrives in this country. Sailing is a popular hobby or pastime for many people, but for others it’s very much a lifestyle.

If you’re in the latter category, you might be looking to buy your own and be contemplating the cost of a yacht. There’s a huge variety of vessels available – from motor yachts to a sporting yacht – and the sheer amount of choice and yacht sizes (both new and used yachts) can seem bewildering. Below, we take you through the various options and the costs associated with each.

The average price of a yacht in the UK

While yachts are often regarded as synonymous with luxury, in reality they come in a startling range of sizes, designs, and prices. The average cost of buying a yacht in the UK varies considerably, according to a number of factors.

Whether you’re looking to buy a used vessel or a brand-new yacht, as well as the size and type of yacht you want, will all partly determine the price you’ll pay.

The average price of a yacht in the UK

How much is a small yacht?

At the cheaper end of the market, you should expect to pay a minimum of £10,000 for a small sailing model which will be functional but modest, with the price rising to £50,000 or more for a new, more sophisticated, motorised yacht.

If you’re looking for something more spacious with a range of additional features, mid-range yachts in the UK are often priced between £50,000 and £500,000. These boats may come with more advanced navigation equipment, refined interiors, and extra amenities. These are more suitable for experienced sailors who are prepared to spend more on their passion.

Larger, motor-driven yachts will set you back hundreds of thousands of pounds. For example, a new 50-foot yacht costs upwards of £200,000 while the 70-foot yacht cost or 100-foot yacht cost will set you back anywhere between £1 million and many times that sum, respectively.

How much is a small yacht?

How much does a super yacht cost?

In terms of top tier yachts – or “super yachts” – these can cost millions or even tens of millions of pounds and upwards. These vessels are often enormous (ranging from 120 feet to 300 feet in length). They epitomise luxury and may have multiple decks, along with swimming pools, helipads and sophisticated entertainment facilities.

How much does a super yacht cost?

Additional costs and maintenance.

While the upfront cost of buying a yacht is substantial, there are a number of supplementary fees that apply to yacht ownership. You can expect to pay between 5% and 10% of the yacht’s initial purchase price on such annual costs. Here are a few to consider:

  • Insuring your yacht is essential and the price will vary according to its value, its size and its intended function. We offer sailing yacht insurance and motor boat insurance .
  • Maintaining your yacht. Additional costs might come in the form of engine servicing or repairs.
  • Finding the right place to dock your yacht is crucial and can be expensive, particularly in popular marinas. Annual mooring fees vary considerably depending on the location and the size of the vessel.

Owning a yacht is an aspiration for many people, but it’s important to bear in mind the costs associated with buying one.

You should begin your search having already established a rough budget, the size of the vessel you’d like to purchase and what you’ll principally be using it for. Otherwise, the yacht market can seem overwhelmingly diverse, making it difficult to choose the right model for you.

What is the average price of a yacht?

What is the average price of a yacht?

The average price of a yacht in the UK is difficult to determine due to the variety on offer. A yacht can cost anywhere from around £10,000 to several million pounds before you start to get into super yacht territory. That said, a mid-sized sailboat should cost you between £50,000 and £100,000.

What is the price of a luxury yacht?

The price of a luxury yacht depends on whether you’re looking for a high-spec sailing vessel or a “super yacht”. For the former, the price will be upwards of £1 million, while the latter could exceed £100 million.

How much does a yacht cost to rent?

The cost of renting a yacht varies enormously, depending on what sort of vessel you’re looking for. A mid-sized motorboat or sailing yacht costs around £400 – £1,600 per day, while a much larger, luxury yacht could easily cost around £10,000 per day.

May 2015 dick portillo reflects on sale of eponymous restaurant chain.

Chicago, Illinois, May 22, 2015  — Visit a Portillo's restaurant at lunchtime and you'll see a steady stream of customers ordering Italian Beef sandwiches, Chicago-style hot dogs, french fries and chocolate cake shakes. Recent patrons might have caught a glimpse of Dick Portillo placing his own less decadent order: a single hard boiled egg. There was a reason for his restraint. The founder of the eponymous chain had a big dinner celebration later that night and he didn't want to be too full.

That discipline and methodical planning shows up in other facets of Portillo's life, including how he picked a private equity firm to take over his self-made empire. As his business hit 51 years in April 2014, he said he was proud of what he had accomplished. But to take Portillo's to the next level, he knew he needed outside financing. "I was very leery of who I talked to," said Portillo, 75. "I wanted to see who would baby this more, and keep the culture."

A self-proclaimed "systems junkie," Portillo put the chain's 38 locations up for sale last year. He quickly had two dozen suitors trying to get their hands on the popular chain. Berkshire Partners was the winning bidder even though, Portillo said, its offer was lower than some others. He said he dismissed a higher offer because it included plans to quickly take Portillo's public; he worried the firm would make hasty changes to try and grow too quickly.

One of the things he liked about Berkshire was that it wasn't a restaurant operator looking to replace Portillo's tried-and-true methods with its own restaurant operating systems. A Berkshire official echoed those ideals."We don't have any desire to change the formula at all," said Mike Miles, who is now executive chairman of the Portillo's chain. "The last thing you'd want to do is mess with that formula and mess with that business." Miles said Portillo now is helping him interview prospective CEOs for the chain.

Portillo said his restaurant's large menu and various processes, which include preparing nearly everything but the french fries at massive commissaries, differs from chains such as Chipotle Mexican Grill, which has a more limited menu and list of ingredients. "It is complex, it's very complex. It's also extremely successful."

The history buff — he has retraced the sailing path of Christopher Columbus, among other adventures — compares the success of Portillo's business model to building a moat outside a medieval castle to block enemies. "My moat is the complexity of the business and it helps keep the competition away," Portillo said.

Portillo's revenue per store is unheard of in fast-food or fast-casual restaurants. An average McDonald's in the United States, for example, brings in nearly $2.5 million in annual revenue. The average newer Portillo's brings in $7 to $8 million. A higher-volume location in Downers Grove sells around $2 million of salads a year, one of many statistics Portillo rattles off. Portillo sees his restaurants as more of a special destination than other fast casual chains. The wide variety means families linger, even with no kids' menus or toys. The company has shipped its food to every state for in-home celebrations.

Neither Portillo nor Miles would discuss the financial terms of last summer's acquisition nor the chain's profitability. But Miles, an advisory director at Berkshire Partners with years of restaurant and retail expertise, was quick to say that Portillo's "single unit economics are better than anything I've ever seen." Selling the chain has at times been difficult for Portillo, though he said he still believes it was the right decision at the right time. "I have some regrets occasionally, it's not all of the time. It was a big emotional thing for me," Portillo said of selling his business. His journey started 52 years ago, when he scraped together $1,100 to set up a hot dog stand in a 6- by 12-foot trailer with no running water.

Through his new company R&S Growth Management, Portillo oversees real estate investments. Those investments include the land under most of Portillo's restaurants — he leases the space back to Berkshire Partners — along with other ventures such as shopping centers and apartments. Portillo said he aims to buy the land for future Portillo's locations where the space is for sale and would then lease the space to Berkshire Partners. He does not own the land for the upcoming Rockford and Homewood locations, the first new Portillo's set to open in nearly two years.

Portillo continues to have connections to his former staff and customers. On a recent weekday, he posed for photos with patrons at the Downers Grove location. His fans include Scott Winch, a landscaper who said he visits the restaurant daily and is partial to the jumbo char dog. "We miss ya boss, we miss ya," Winch, 47, told Portillo as they embraced. "You're the man." One worker brought Portillo a handful of flowers, while another quickly delivered his meal — that single egg — to his table.

After coffee, a "good breakfast" such as oatmeal with sliced banana, and a berry, almond milk and protein smoothie, Portillo's typical lunch is fruit and fat-free cottage cheese. He tends to wake up between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m., work out each morning and eat healthy meals, albeit with some indulgence. After all, one of his investments is an 18 percent stake in the Oak Brook location of Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse, where he planned to dine later that same night. More often, however, dinner is lighter. He said he eats at Chipotle a lot, and is a fan of its black beans and brown rice.

Portillo, a former Marine Corps member and marathon runner, said he was also ready to slow down and "enjoy life" a little bit." There was no balance in my life. It was pretty much all work until about 10 years ago. And I've started going to more funerals than weddings," Portillo said as his sat in his former Oak Brook office. "I would like to spend more time with my grandchildren and children, more time on my boat, and at the same time see the name all over the country, if possible. That could not happen if I would have remained in the position I was in."

Portillo has a new office in Oakbrook Terrace with a view of the Chicago skyline, roughly 2-1/2 miles from Portillo's headquarters. The new office serves as meeting place for Portillo, his chief administrative officer and the managing director of R&S. It's also a place to showcase everything from Han Dynasty swords to guns and machetes used by U.S. Marines. Photos of Portillo's family, his restaurants and his adventures adorn tables and walls throughout the space. There are also a few quotations that highlight Portillo's thinking and business strategy. Two sayings get prominent placement on both his new desk and in Oak Brook, where his former office has been transformed into a meeting area. The top silver plaque reads D.W.Y.S.Y.G.T.D. – short for "Do what you say you're going to do." Below it, another plaque reads, "When You Have Somebody By The Balls Don't Let Go To Get A Better Grip."

In a hallway outside his Oakbrook Terrace office sits a sculpture titled Self Made Man. The piece, by Bobbie Carlyle, depicts a man carving himself out of stone. It was a Christmas gift from Portillo's wife, Sharon, whom he married in 1959. Portillo showcases his commitment to her outside each restaurant, with "Dick Loves Sharon" carved into the sidewalk cement, and hides the same message in the decor of new restaurants.

He still spends time working on the Portillo's business as a consultant to Berkshire Partners, work that includes helping the firm interview potential CEOs for Portillo's. One of Portillo's sons, Michael, still works for the restaurant, training managers. Portillo plans to attend the grand opening events for the chain's Rockford location, which is set to open on June 9.

Portillo said the two toughest and most important things Berkshire needs to focus on are site selection — "so far I've been using my gut instincts" — and training. He recalls having to pull aside managers who were not treating workers properly, whether that was overhearing swearing in the kitchen or stopping by a drive-thru lane where an order taker outside on a sub-zero night was not relieved of the frigid duty quickly enough. Portillo said he made the manager gear up and stand outside for the same long 45 minutes.

Berkshire Partners is getting ready to open three locations in 2015, with plans for five in 2016. It's paying close attention to places with Chicago transplants, much as Portillo himself did by opening units in Arizona, for example. So fans on the west coast of Florida, along with those in parts of Wisconsin and Texas, will "probably see" Portillo's restaurants in the next five years, Miles said. "We're very conscious about not trying to go too quickly," said Miles, who said that for now there are no plans to franchise any locations or to take the company public.

Meanwhile, Portillo spends more of his days taking adventurous vacations, such as a one-month tour of Alaska and a trip through the Panama Canal, both on the 112-foot Westport yacht he got in May. "I'm looking for a bigger one," he says, laughing. Like his prior boats, the latest white yacht carries the name Top Dog. The license plate of his black SUV, meanwhile, reads DPTD, for Dick Portillo Top Dog.

Portillo credited his passion for much of his success. "Sometimes it just gave me more energy to go further, to push." He has photos of the Francis Cabrini housing project on Mohawk Street where he spent part of his childhood on the wall of the new office, just a few feet from photos of one of his homes, a mansion in Oak Brook. "We want to keep Dick as involved as possible," said Miles, who said he meets with Portillo weekly when the septuagenarian is in town. "I don't think his passion for the business has waned at all."

The Real Cost of Buying & Owning a 50-Foot Yacht

A 50-foot yacht can be difficult to maneuver, especially in tight spaces and harsh weather, so you need to invest in proper training for yourself and your crew. You may also need to apply for special permits and licenses to operate in certain areas. These factors can add up quickly to the overall costs, so if you are determined to own a 50-foot yacht, here's the real cost of buying and owning one.

The total estimated upfront costs of buying a 50-foot yacht range from $458,000 to $692,000 and include the initial purchase price and other fees. There are also hidden costs that total $70,000–$300,000+ per year. For ongoing costs, the total estimated annual costs are $35,000–$85,000 per year.

Although costly, with proper budgeting, maintenance, and strategic planning, you can manage the costs of owning a yacht and still enjoy the lifestyle that comes with it. Let's look at some practical tips to help you manage the costs of owning a 50-foot yacht.

  • A high-end luxury yacht may cost significantly more than a basic production yacht with standard features and finishes.
  • A new yacht with low engine hours and minimal wear and tear may command a higher price than an older yacht.
  • Hiring a surveyor can help you save money in the long run by identifying any potential problems before you purchase the yacht.
  • Fuel costs can add up quickly, since a 50-foot yacht with twin diesel engines uses almost 20–30 gallons of fuel per hour.
  • Winter storage can protect your yacht from the elements, and it can also add up to the overall cost of owning a yacht.

Cost of buying & owning a 50-foot yacht, upfront costs of buying a 50-foot yacht, hidden costs of owning a 50-foot yacht, ongoing costs of owning a 50-foot yacht, tips for managing the costs of owning a 50-foot yacht.

When buying a 50-foot yacht, there are several costs to consider, such as upfront costs, hidden costs, and ongoing costs per year. Here's a rundown on the all-in cost:

In this section, we will break down these costs into sub-sections to give you a better idea of what you can expect.

The purchase price of a 50-foot yacht varies depending on the model

Different models of yachts may have different features, amenities, and capabilities, which can affect their value and appeal to buyers . A high-end luxury yacht with state-of-the-art technology, custom finishes, and top-of-the-line appliances may cost significantly more than a basic production yacht with standard features and finishes.

Similarly, a newer yacht with low engine hours and minimal wear and tear may command a higher price than an older yacht with more use and maintenance requirements. Yachts located in popular boating destinations or areas with high demand may be priced higher than those in less desirable locations.

Here are some examples of different yacht models, their amenities, and estimated prices:

Sales tax and registration fees

When you purchase a yacht, you will need to pay sales tax and registration fees. In some states, you may be able to avoid paying sales tax if you purchase the yacht in a different state and keep it there.

In Florida, the sales tax rate is 6% , but there is a cap of $18,000 on the amount of tax you will pay. So if you purchase a yacht for $500,000, you will only pay $18,000 in sales tax.

On the other hand, registration fees are the fees you need to pay to register your yacht with the state where you plan to operate it. The fees are typically used to fund marine programs, such as boating safety education, law enforcement, and conservation efforts.

cost of top dog yacht

Some states charge a flat fee, while others charge based on the length of the yacht. In some cases, the registration fees may also be based on the age or value of the yacht. These fees are typically renewed annually, and failure to renew your registration can result in penalties or fines.

Registration fees in Florida for a yacht over 110 feet in length can be as high as $4,000 per year. However, for a yacht under 16 feet in length, the registration fee is only $5 per year.

Survey and inspection costs

A survey and inspection is essentially a thorough examination of the yacht by a professional surveyor. The surveyor will inspect the vessel from top to bottom, looking for any issues or potential problems that could affect the yacht's seaworthiness or value. This includes checking the hull, deck, rigging, electrical systems, plumbing, and more.

For smaller yachts, the cost may be a few hundred dollars, while larger and more complex yachts could cost several thousand dollars.

By identifying any potential problems before you purchase the yacht, you can negotiate with the seller or even decide not to purchase the yacht altogether. In the long run, this can save you money and help ensure that you're making a sound investment.

Insurance and financing costs

Insurance rates can vary widely, but you can expect to pay a premium for coverage. The higher the value of the yacht, the higher the insurance premium will be.

As for financing, the interest rates for yacht loans are typically higher than those for home or car loans. This is because yachts are considered luxury items and are often seen as a higher-risk investment. The interest rate you'll be offered will depend on your credit score, income, and the amount of the loan you're seeking.

Aside from the upfront costs, there are also hidden costs beyond the initial purchase price. Here are some hidden costs you should be aware of:

Environmental and regulatory compliance

Owning a yacht also comes with environmental and regulatory compliance costs. You may need to pay for permits to dock your yacht in certain areas, or you may need to invest in equipment to comply with environmental regulations. These costs can add up quickly and may not be immediately apparent when you're considering purchasing a yacht.

Crew and staffing costs

If you plan to use your yacht frequently, you'll likely need to hire a crew to help you maintain and operate it. Crew and staffing costs can include salaries, benefits, and insurance, and can be a significant expense over time. Additionally, you may need to pay for crew training and certification , which can add to the overall cost of owning a yacht.

If you're looking for paid courses for your crew, here are 9 best sailing courses you might want to check out.

Costs of upgrades and customizations

While a 50-foot yacht may come equipped with many standard features, you may want to add additional amenities or customize the interior to your liking. These upgrades can be expensive and may not be covered by your initial purchase price.

Upgrades and customizations can range from relatively minor changes such as adding a new sound system or upgrading the navigation equipment, to more extensive modifications such as adding a new deck or completely redesigning the interior of the yacht. The cost of these upgrades will be based on the extent of the modifications and the materials and labor involved.

In this section, we will discuss the ongoing costs of owning a 50-foot yacht.

Maintenance and repair costs

Regular maintenance helps keep your yacht in good condition and prevents costly repairs. Some common maintenance and repair costs include:

  • Engine maintenance
  • Hull cleaning and painting
  • Electrical and plumbing repairs
  • Sail and rigging repairs: ( Here's an article on the cost of replacing a standing rigging )
  • Interior and exterior cleaning

Docking and storage fees

Some common docking and storage fees include:

  • Monthly slip rental fees: These fees cover the cost of renting a slip at a marina or dock for your yacht to be moored. Slip rental fees can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per month.
  • Winter storage fees: During the off-season, many yacht owners choose to store their vessels on land to protect them from the elements. The cost of winter storage can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per season.
  • Launch and haul-out fees: These fees cover the cost of launching your yacht into the water and hauling it out for maintenance or storage, and vary based on the location and the size of your yacht.
  • Electricity and water fees: Many marinas charge additional fees for the use of electricity and water while your yacht is in the slip.

Fuel and operating costs

A 50-foot yacht typically has twin engines, which can be either gasoline or diesel. Diesel engines are generally more fuel-efficient and have a longer lifespan than gasoline engines, but they are also more expensive to purchase and maintain.

On average, a 50-foot yacht with twin diesel engines will use about 20-30 gallons of fuel per hour, while a gasoline-powered yacht will use about 40-50 gallons per hour.

Routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, and hull cleaning is part of the overall operating costs and will cost several thousand dollars per year. More significant repairs or upgrades, such as engine overhauls or electronics replacements, can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Costs for insurance and maintenance reserves

Insurance can protect you from liability and damage to your yacht, while maintenance reserves can help cover unexpected repairs. Some common insurance and maintenance reserve costs include:

  • Liability insurance
  • Hull and machinery insurance
  • Personal property insurance
  • Emergency repairs and reserves

Here are some tips to help you manage the costs of owning a 50-foot yacht:

Create a budget and stick to it

Your budget should include all of the costs associated with owning and maintaining your yacht, including mooring fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and repairs. Try to plan for unexpected costs, such as emergency repairs or unexpected upgrades.

You should also plan ahead for seasonal expenses, such as winterizing your yacht when the boating season is over . By creating a budget and planning ahead, you can avoid surprises and ensure that you have the funds necessary to keep your yacht in top condition.

Do the basic maintenance and repairs by yourself

While there are some tasks that require a professional, such as engine repairs or electrical work, there are many things you can do yourself with a little knowledge and the right tools.

By doing your own maintenance and repairs, you can save money on labor costs and ensure that your yacht is always in top condition. You can also take pride in knowing that you are taking care of your investment and keeping it in great shape.

Consider sharing and chartering options

If you don't use your yacht all the time, you may want to consider sharing or chartering options as a way to offset the costs of ownership. Sharing your yacht with friends or family members can help split the costs of maintenance and repairs while chartering your yacht to others can help generate income.

There are many websites and companies that specialize in yacht sharing and chartering where you can find an option that works best for you. Just be sure to carefully vet anyone who will be using your yacht to ensure that they are responsible and will take good care of your investment.

Learn some selling and trading strategies

If you find that the costs of owning a 50-foot yacht are too high or you are ready to move on to something else, you may want to consider selling or trading your yacht. There are many strategies you can use to get the best price for your yacht, including working with a broker, advertising online, or attending boat shows.

If you are interested in trading your yacht for something else, perhaps carefully consider your options and work with a reputable dealer. By using these strategies, you can ensure that you get the best value for your investment and can move on to your next adventure with confidence.

THE MEGA MANSIONS OF NAPLES

First, I want to warn you that these “winter getaway” homes are super luxurious and it is easy to imagine yourself sitting by the pool with an attentive butler at your disposal. I couldn’t pick just one that I would buy if I had the money to do so. It certainly makes you wonder what kind of massive architectural structures these billionaires and millionaires live in full time.

cost of top dog yacht

We picked a day to explore Naples and decided on a sightseeing cruise through the beautiful Naples Bay and Gordon Pass waterways, followed by a city trolley tour. These activities are not affiliated with each other, but we were able to jump off the boat and walk a couple of blocks to hop on the two hour trolley tour. We started at Tin City, which you can see on the map below.

Once we pushed off from the dock, we navigated Gordon Pass, wound our way through some canals, and briefly drove out in the Gulf of Mexico. Surprisingly, we had a brief encounter with two dolphins on our way back to Tin City.

Tin City’s tin roofed buildings were the hub of economic development and transportation in the 1920’s, which was made possible by the construction of the Seaboard Airline Railroad. Now it is home to over thirty unique boutiques, two waterfront restaurants and a variety of water and boating adventures.

Several exclusive yacht clubs are conveniently located on Naples Bay. There is a $40,000 application fee and 2-4 year waiting list for one of them. I can safely say that we will never become a member.

With a high concentration of millionaires and billionaires living nearby, I am sure that there will always be a waiting list. The mega boats caught our attention, but wait until you see the massive estates that lined both sides of Naples Bay.

We initially drove by Aqualane Shores, a 350 homesite luxury community on deep canals that was started in 1950. The homes have been torn down and replaced with sprawling mansions priced from $2.3 million to $10 million.

The next development, Port Royal, was developed by John Glen Sample who died in 1973. His vision was to build the finest place in the World to live. Between 1938 and 1950, Sample acquired two square miles of mangroves and swamp land for $13,700.

In the early 1950’s, heavy equipment was brought in to help begin dredging and filling the marshlands to develop numerous man-made peninsulas into residential lots overlooking the waterways, coves and Naples Bay. The first lots were sold for amounts ranging from $7500 to $12,000 each.

Today, the properties sell at the low end for $5 million on canals and up to $60 million for beachfront estates. Since most of these are winter vacation homes, they are only used a few weeks out of the year. I was bummed that we didn’t see a single person lounging by their pool.

Initially, Sample personally interviewed and accepted every potential buyer for each piece of land in the community until his death in 1971. If the buyer was not up to the standards of dress, conversation, or other factor, he would reject their bid to purchase the land.

It was rumored that Sample did not welcome celebrity owners into his community, but after his death, Tom Selleck was allowed to build a home at the end of a peninsula. His original home remains as one of the smaller and older properties that we saw, but it recently sold and will be torn down I’m sure.

cost of top dog yacht

Unfortunately, Tom never moved in because he assumed the entrance would be gated, but it never was. I have to admit that his house has very little curb appeal. They should have called HGTV!

I  can’t remember every owner of the specific estates that the captain pointed out, but I kept track of names and/or companies. Some big names were executives from the likes of S C Johnson, Best Buy, the founder of Play Dough, the founder of a mutual fund company once owned by Aetna, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Revlon, and Portillo (of Chicago Hot Dog fame).

cost of top dog yacht

I wonder if these owners get irritated at the tour boats and private boats cruising up and down the canals. There certainly is not much privacy by the swimming pools that are right on the water.

I took so many pictures and here are a few more…..

Some of the founders of Naples and the surrounding Collier county had built homes in the area. Not too many original homes exist today.

One family owns the two homes above and property on the adjacent island. It was recently put on the market and will go for $100 – $150 million. However, the sales record will not be disclosed to the public.

The trolley tour took us all over town. A highlight during the tour was one of the nation’s most exclusive addresses, 5th Avenue South, which is near Old Naples and is home to upscale fashion and jewelry, spas, one-of-a-kind gifts, artwork, home décor, fine dining, and entertainment.

What a great way to spend a day! I highly recommend both activities if you like admiring fancy expensive things that you can’t afford. Or maybe you can….either way it’s fun to look.

A Boat Owner's Guide To Bringing Your Dog On Board

By Rob Bowman | Posted On May 20, 2021 Updated On Mar 23, 2022

There are few things greater in this world than a good day spent boating and the love of a good dog. Combining the two can be a great experience for both of you. With a little preparation and some handy accessories, bringing your pup along for a multi-night cruise can mean you don't have to leave your best friend behind. From leaping off of the gunwale into the water to chase a dolphin or using the bathroom on your newly cleaned teak deck, there are certain challenges that come with bringing your pet on board your boat.

With boating becoming increasingly more popular as a recreation and many more people choosing to become liveaboard boat owners, the ability to adapt your pet to life on the water is becoming easier because it is becoming more common. With the ability to connect easily with other dog-loving boaters and group share tips and tricks online, social media can offer up some great advice. Facebook Groups like "Boat Owners United", for example, have a lot of helpful people that are keen to share what has worked for them! We've compiled a list of advice from experts, lessons learned, and useful accessories that can help you overcome the obstacles of bringing your dog on your boat or yacht for extended periods of time.

Take It Slow, Try A Day At The Sandbar Or A Short Cruise To Lunch

This might seem like a no-brainer, but doing a few test runs on your boat with your dog can mean a world of difference when it comes time to take your trip. Sandbars are excellent places for dogs to run around and enjoy the water. If you're in a yacht, anchoring in deeper water and loading your dog on to the tender can be great practice for accessing the beach or sandbar. Even taking your dog for a short cruise to lunch can get them used to the movement of the boat and all of the things they may encounter. After two or three short trips, you may even try an overnighter so that your pup has the experience of sleeping on the boat.

Tips For Getting On And Off Your Boat With Your Dog

Timid or unconfident dogs can hesitate when moving from the dock to your boat causing a slip into the water. It's not unfathomable to have a pet fall in the water at the dock and then struggle to get back on the dock, particularly at a busy marina. If you're a small dog owner, carrying him or her on to the boat might just be easier than training it. A harness with a handle on top is always smart. Just in case they do fall in, having a handle to help lift them out can make things easier.

For bigger dogs, try walking them on board with treats to keep their attention. Sometimes tossing a treat on board in front of them can be enough to encourage them to cross the gangway. From the very beginning use verbal cues your dog is used to hearing, as well as hand signals. Keeping them leashed during this time is encouraged, but make sure not to pull or force them on to the boat. If for some reason your dog isn't motivated by treats, incorporating one of their favorite toys into the process can also work. Some yachts had side deck gates that open for easy boarding and are close to being level with the deck.

(Seen below: Many trawler yacht brands like Fleming offer easy boarding functionality built right in. Photo cred: Scott Pearson)

Boarding from the water after swimming can also create challenges. If your yacht has a hydraulic swim platform that lowers into the water, you're all set. If not, consider purchasing the Solstice Inflatable Pup Plank to make it easier on you and them for getting back onto the boat after a swim. The bottom of the mesh area is weighted to keep it under the water while they board. Consider setting a treat in front of the Pup Plank to encourage them to use it.

Lining part of your swim platform with synthetic turf can also give your dog's claws something to grip as they pull themselves up. This will save your teak platform from getting scratches.

(Seen below: The Solstice Pup Plank can be ordered online and is a durable option.)

Give Your Dog Their Own Spot On The Boat

Dogs are creatures of habit and will feel confident on board your boat if they have their own place. If you're planning on a multi-night trip, think about bringing your dog's favorite bed along with either his/her crate or a movable baby gate. Should you choose to dock at a restaurant and want to leave your pup on board, this will ensure they don't start chewing on something they aren't supposed to.

Potty Train Your Boat Dog

Where your dog will go to the bathroom is the number one concern many pet-owning boaters have when cruising. It's not always feasible to hop in your tender and motor over to the nearest island or dock to let them do their business. Just like they have their own space on your boat to rest, also give them a designated area to go to the bathroom. PorchPotty.com has an excellent option for less than $300 that is capable of handling the needs of larger dogs. If you're going offshore or for an extended period of time, it might make sense to invest in a portable dog bathroom

When Long-Distance Cruising, Bring Your Dog's Papers

Anyone who has cruising experience knows the value of making a list during your preparation. If you plan on bringing your pup with you on the boat for an extended period of time, make sure their vaccination papers are on the list along with pertinent vet records. Will you be crossing over into another country? Do your research ahead of time to find out what is expected of you in regards to your pets on board. Something as simple as a missed vaccination date can mean you can't enter the country.

Keep in mind too, some countries don't allow imported pets at all. Jamaica is an island that does not allow imported pets, for example.

Yes, Some Dogs Do Get Seasick

One thing to keep in mind is dogs do get seasick from the motion of the boat. Some dogs will never have a problem and some have a difficult time handling the rolling of the waves. Larger motor yachts tend to not roll as much thanks to their heavier displacement. One boat owner on CruisersForum.com brought ginger snaps along for boat rides with his beagle who occasionally got motion sickness. Others suggested timing the traveling part of your boating after your dog's food has digested and keeping the boat speed slower when on a full stomach. Consult with your vet on what medications are available to help your dog with motion sickness.

(Below: Youtubers 'The O'Kelly's' talk about cruising the Caribbean with their dog on a sailing catamaran .)

Will You Be Fishing On Board?

Nothing ruins a trip like an impromptu visit to the emergency room, a veterinarian one that is. Cut bait, live bait, and even artificial baits can smell like a treat to a dog and nothing would be worse than a self-setting circle hook piercing your puppy's lip. If you're going to be fishing on board, make sure your bait, especially any bait with hooks in it, are kept out of reach. If you're bringing your dog on a sportfishing boat that has things like gaffs or knives at a bait cutting station, it might be best to keep your dog in the salon until everything is cleaned up.

More Random Uncategorized Advice

In addition to the above considerations, here are some more pointers for bringing your dog cruising with you on your boat.

  • Search for LifeTag Wirelsss Man Overboard System. This wearable personal locater beacon can easily be strapped to a dog's collar.
  • Remember to fill your dog's water bowl frequently, especially when cruising in warm, sunny climates.
  • It doesn't hurt to look what vet offices might be on your cruising route just in case of an emergency.
  • If cruising for longer distances, bring enough toys for your dog. Exercising them may not be feasible.
  • If you can afford one, get a Seakeeper Gyro. The stabilization will help your pets and your guests!

If you're still wondering whether or not to take your dog on your boating trip with you, only you can make the decision by weighing the benefits with the temperament of your pet. So pull in the "bow-lines" and take off with your best four-legged friend to make the best boating memories with confidence. You'll be glad you didn't leave them behind!

Taking Your Dog on a Boat? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

John Sampson

Are you thinking about taking a day trip up the east or west coastline? Maybe you’re planning a long voyage on your yacht for a few months? What are you going to do with your dog while you’re away? If the thought of leaving your furry friend in a kennel for months breaks your heart, why not just take them along with you for the trip?

It might surprise you to learn that most dogs actually like spending time on a boat out on the ocean. Dogs can adapt to boat life, and many breeds, like Labradors, love the water. However, there are a few things pet owners need to know before taking their hound out on the water.

This post unpacks everything you need to know about transitioning your dog to the life-aquatic.

Remember – Safety First!

The first rule in boating is to understand the risks of the ocean and the safety protocols required to keep everyone on the boat. It might seem like a simple principle, but if someone, even the dog, goes overboard, you’ll suddenly understand the reason for the rule.

Dog Life Jacket s and Other Safety Equipment

The reality is that all breeds don’t suit life on the water. While Labradors love it, you Maltese might not find it as appealing. Some dogs are excellent swimmers, while other breeds are hopeless if they land in the water.

Before you take your dog on board for a sail, you’ll need to understand if they have what it takes to make it out on the ocean. Old dogs will tire quickly, and even young dogs can fatigue fast and get disorientated if they fall overboard into the water.

It’s vital to get your dog a life jacket to prevent disaster from occurring. A dog lifejacket keeps your pet floating in an upright position, allowing them to swim back to the boat. You can connect a rope to the jacket and the boat, allowing easy retrieval if your furry friend falls overboard.

Dog Life Jacket

So, how do you choose the right life jacket for your dog? Follow these tips for a snug fit and plenty of protection.

  • Fit – The jacket must fit your dog and not allow any wriggle room that could allow them to escape.
  • Lifting handle – The handles make it easier to pull Fido from the water.
  • Comfort – Your dog shouldn’t complain when you put on the lifejacket.
  • Color – Choose a high-viz color like bright yellow or orange for easy identification in misty weather.

After you find the right life jacket, fit it to your dog and let them try it out in the pool, lake, or ocean before heading out to sea in your boat. Practice makes perfect, and most dogs will learn to swim with the jacket in a few sessions.

Medical and Veterinary Considerations

Before you head out onto the water, take Fido to the vet for a checkup. Tell the vet your plans and ask them for medication they think you might need when you’re out on the water.

Getting to a vet when you’re out at sea isn’t an option. It’s important to get a dog-specific first-aid kit for your dog.

Obtain a Travel Certificate of Health for Your Dog

Apply for a USDA International Travel Certificate of Health before taking your dog out on the water. Most countries, apart from Mexico, require this certificate.

Dealing with Heat Injuries

If you live in a cooler climate and you’re sailing to the Caribbean, your dog might have a harder time adjusting to the change in weather than you.

Dogs can’t sweat, and they are at risk of overheating in these scenarios. Make sure you take a spray bottle, ice packs, fans, and a shade for cooling off your dog in hot weather.

Motion Sickness

Like humans, some dogs experience seasickness out in the ocean. The last thing you need is your dog vomiting all over the deck.

Vomiting also leads to rapid dehydration, placing Fido in a life-threatening position. Make sure you get medication from the vet to control seasickness before you leave on your adventure.

Sure, dogs have fur, but that doesn’t mean they can’t get sunburnt. If you have a short-hair breed, use a light SPF sunscreen. Use naturally scented sunscreen to avoid irritating the dog.

Transitioning Your Dog to the Life Aquatic

You won’t know how your dog responds to life on a boat until you get them on board. Before you launch the vessel, introduce your dog to the watercraft and let them spend a few hours onboard sniffing and inspecting the watercraft.

Set up living quarters for your hound in the cabin. Let her get used to her new surroundings before you head out for the trip.

Boat Considerations

Keep your dog in mind when purchasing your boat. It’s not only the size you need to consider. Design elements like low-angle steps for the stern give your dog easier access to the cabin when they feel like getting away from the noise of the ocean.

Understanding Your Dogs Behavior and Triggers

Many dogs get excited when they encounter wildlife out on the water. The last thing you want is Fido to jump in the water to chase a pod of dolphins. That occurrence could end up putting the crew at risk in an attempt to save your dog.

While you’re likely to understand your dog’s triggers, there are times when you might not intervene before they have a chance to react to the stimulus. Therefore, everyone on board needs to know how to handle the dog in a rescue.

Transitioning Your Dog to the Life Aquatic

Potty Training Your Pooch

Imagine waking up in the morning to find a steaming pile of dog mess on the cabin carpet or deck – what a lovely way to start the day, right? We recommend getting your dog a “potty mat” for the boat’s bow.

With the right training, most dogs will learn how to use the mat in a few days. We recommend using the mat at home for a few days before you head out to sea. Teach Fido to poop on the mat, and they’ll make an easier transition to it on the boat, with fewer accidents.

Transportation and Kennels

If you’re planning on visiting p[orts and marinas along your trip, make sure you have a well-trained dog, or you’ll have to lock them up in the cabin when you go out on the town.

So, give your dog time to adjust to its environment before you take her out on the water. Let her sleep in the cabin by herself for a few nights before you embark on your trip. If you’re planning an extended stay onshore, make sure you research kennels in the local area.

You can also look for dog sitters in the towns you’re visiting, but make sure you have a list and contact the sitter before you leave on your trip.

Food and Water

Pack enough food and water for your pup; there is nowhere to buy food when you’re out on the water.

Account for your dog’s nutritional requirements, and pack enough fresh water for your furry friend.

We recommend packing some treats; they help when your dog starts feeling anxiety or excitement, giving you a way to distract the dog and calm her down.

Exercise and Recreational Stimulus

Your dog will likely love the first few days at sea. They take some time to settle into their new surroundings, and it’s all fun and games until they realize the space they live in and the limitations of what they can do onboard the boat.

If you own a breed, like a Husky, you’re going to need to find a way to get them the exercise they need every day. Dogs get bored just like us, and while we might enjoy the thrill of being out on the ocean, your pet might not find it as exciting after a few days.

Remember to pull into marinas or ports and take Fido out for a walk on the beach or the tidepools. It’s important to keep an eye on them, as many dogs will attempt to drink salt water when they are feeling thirsty. The last thing you need is to take Fido back to the boat and have them vomit or spread diarrhea all over the cabin or deck.

National Parks and other Restricted Areas

Many national parks won’t allow you to bring your dog onshore. Check your destinations and make sure you’re pulling into ports and marinas where your dog can have fun on shore with you.

Check with local authorities on their pet policies, and make sure you pull into marinas and ports that are pet-friendly.

Encounters with Animals on the Beach and in the Ocean

One of the best parts of being out on the ocean is witnessing the amazing aquatic wildlife. Your dog will find your animal encounters as exciting as you.

As naturally curious animals, they won’t understand that dolphins and fish are not interested in playing with them, and some dogs might attempt to jump from the boat and swim after them to say hello.

Your dog also needs her leash and harness when walking on the beach. The last thing you want is for her to race ahead to try and eat a turtle laying its eggs on the beach. In destinations like Mexico, the beaches have all types of animals roaming the sand, from iguanas to cows.

If your dog doesn’t have any discipline or training, keep them on the leash at all times. If they are well-trained, you can take them off the leash. Mexico has plenty of dogs roaming the beaches without leashes, so make sure your pet has social skills and training before you let them off the leash.

Leaving your untrained dog off-leash may result in her running away with other dogs in all the excitement of meeting some new friends. Spending hours hunting down Fido will ruin your trip, and there’s the chance you might not find them if they wander too far away.

Every pet should have a life jacket

The Hard Talk

While we all want to have the best time possible out on the water, the reality is that the ocean is a dangerous place. There’s always the chance that your dog falls overboard in stormy seas. Therefore, you’ll need to prepare yourself, and your family, for the possibility of losing the animal.

If the dog does go overboard in bad weather, a rescue could put your life and your family at risk. Therefore, you have to prepare everyone on board for the possibility of leaving the animal if rescue is too dangerous.

It’s a hard conversation to have, especially with kids, but they need the preparation to avoid making a life-threatening mistake on the water. The last thing you want is your young son jumping into the sea to save the animal.

Wrapping Up

Your pup might seem frightening or nervous when you first introduce them to your boat. If that’s the case, we recommend purchasing a pet-friendly CBD product for your pup. CBD is a legal and non-toxic cannabinoid suitable for your dog.

The CBD has a calming effect on your dog, reducing their anxiety in the first few hours after launching the boat. Keep an eye on your dog and dose them if you notice them starting to feel anxious. Signs of anxiety include them wanting to sit right next to you all the time. Some dogs may also begin shaking or shivering as a sign of anxiety.

Don’t stress about it; most dogs behave this way when they experience a new environment. However, if your dog doesn’t look like she’s doing well after a few days, you might have to consider turning around.

However, your dog will eventually adapt to its new lifestyle, and they’ll find it less intimidating with every day they spend out on the water. After a week or so, your pup will be a salty sailor ready for your next ocean-going voyage!
