Luders 16 by A. E. Luders

luders 16 sailboat for sale

The Luders 16 is the smallest of a series of yachts designed by “Bill” Luders, in which beauty was one of the primary design objectives.  Created a bit later than many of the designs on this site, she has a definite air of modernity about her, with her steeply angled, shapely ends, relatively high freeboard, distinctive cabin trunk, and rounded transom.

Small and light for this general shape, she has a delicacy of appearance that we find very appealing. Her relatively high freeboard gives her cockpit a little more depth and her cabin a little more headroom than one might expect in a boat of this size. You sit down inside the boat and have a clear passage into the cabin, which gives a great feeling of security. The boats customarily carry a pair of pipe berths in the cabin, over a small bench on either side. Sitting on the benches one has sitting headroom under the side decks, which is very rare in a boat of this size and type, and is a great addition to her comfort and utility.

Deeply V’d sections mean she will have the best possible motion going to windward in a chop, and will not pound. These characteristics will make her faster, drier, and more comfortable sailing to windward in those conditions, compared to many other boats.

The L16 started life as a more conventional plank on frame boat, and was modified into its current form when it became one of the first keel sailboats to be built using “hot molded” plywood construction, differing from cold molded construction only in the use of earlier glues, which required heat to cure. Our version would be cold-molded using epoxy glue, and would (unless otherwise agreed) follow current racing practice in the use of aluminum spars and tasteful modern hardware. The interior of this boat is frameless, and thus very smooth and easy to clean and maintain. Most owners would want the interior to be finished bright, which we think would be a warm and rather stunning look much in keeping with the style of the boat. Maintenance characteristics would be very favorable, and we would predict a very long lifespan for the structure.

L16s are still raced in Northeast Harbor, Maine, and in Chicago.

Fast, pretty, nimble, easy to handle, useful as a small cruising boat, and requiring little strength to sail, an L16 would be a delightful and versatile boat.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Originally called the Fishers Island L-Class. The very first boats (14) were of conventional planked construction from the Luders Yard for the Fishers Island YC. Most of these were destroyed in a hurricane after the very first year. After World War II orders came, first from the Chicago YC, for a new version, built of molded plywood. It is thought more than 100 of these were built. In the 1960’s and 70’s, a fiberglass version was built by Continental Plastics Corporation, then by Midwest Marine and Easterly Yachts.

The Cheoy Lee Luders is ready to go. The owner is just completing a 3-week cruise. New Roller Furling and Large Genoa. Rebuilt Perkins Engine. The Luders needs some loving care, but most of it is cosmetic due to age. The biggest cosmetic issue is water damage to the wood around port windows. Stock #245733 Classic Design 1969 Cheoy Lee Luders 36 in Great Condition! Recently Rebuilt Perkins Diesel Engine! 7 Sails Including Spinnaker and Storm Sails! The Cheoy Lee Shipyard is known for its exceptional yachts. The Luders 36 is a rare find and one of their better builds of the age. The Luders 36 has a master cabin in the v-berth and an adjacent head with a sink. The galley is at the foot of the companionway, handy to the cockpit. The two-burner stove and large sink are to port. The icebox is on the port side and doubles as a navigation table Forward of the icebox/nav table there is a single bunk and settee. The settee pulls out for another berth. The dinette is offset to port and converts to a double berth. It is a solid, capable racer/cruiser with construction many would say is bluewater worthy. Reason for selling is owned the cheoy lee for 44 years. it is time to retire from boat ownership..

1976 Cheoy Lee 42 Sail Boat

1976 Cheoy Lee 42 Sail Boat

Half Moon Bay, California

Length 42.0

The boat was built by Cheoy Lee in Hong-Kong, in 1976. Cheoy Lee 42, docked in Pillard Point (Half Moon Bay), registered in California. The boat is visible at Pillard Point marina, dock H-26. You can access the dock any time (there is no gate). If you want to see the inside, we will just need to agree on a time and date for me to show you. The boat is in good shape, we've been owning it, traveling and living on it since 2004. The engine will need some attention eventually, but it runs OK. Based on ads I see for similar boats, its value should be around $50,000, you can see it with the links below, they'll lead you to pictures . There was a recent storn and saome damge thgat was jsut foxed. But a starboard mizzen chain-plate got broken, and I am not going to be able to fix that quickly, it requires some time I don't have for now...Having a new chain-plate would take I believe less that $100, but it would take a couple of hours to put it in place. This is something a possible buyer should be aware of. Other than that this is perfect.http://donpedro.lediouris.net/journal/diary/2014.01/IMAG0518.jpghttp://trip-2010-2011.lediouris.netMore pictures of the inside are available at http://donpedro.lediouris.net/sleipnir/index.htmlAbout the maintenance, you can checkout the link at http://donpedro.lediouris.net/?view=protected/maintenance.html,Also, details on the equipment are available at http://donpedro.lediouris.net/clspec.html http://donpedro.lediouris.net/protected/maintenance.htmlsome pictures of the boat - inside and outside - available at http://donpedro.lediouris.net/?view=journal/index.html. read http://donpedro.lediouris.net.Details about the equipment (oven/stove, heater, watermaker, winches, auto-pilot, radio, electronics, etc). The boat has 9 sails (main, mizzen, trysail, new staysail, yankee, genoa, spinnaker, mizzen staysail, storm staysail).Mizzen and main have been recently (2014) reviewed and tuned-up by a Sailmaker. HAVE A 1979/80 36' ALLIED PRINCESS KETCH FOR SALE, WITH MANY, MANY UPGRADES TO TAKE YOU OFFSHORE IN COMFORT AND SAFETY. FOR THOSE THAT ARE LOOKING FOR A SOLID OFFSHORE VESSEL THIS IS WORTH CONSIDERING. I HAVE A 9 PAGE DETAILED SPEC SHEET AND 24+ PHOTO'S AVAILABLE. FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME VIA EMAIL AND I WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO SEND THEM.   About the Allied Princess: She is a robust character ketch that does not pretend to be anything other than a simple, comfortable cruising boat. In truth, it is a boat only a cruiser could love. Designed by Arthur Edmunds and first introduced in 1972, the Princess enjoyed a 10-year production run during which about 140 hulls were built, which likely makes it the most successful boat produced by Allied during its 22 years of existence (1962-84). Of all the boats Allied built–including the Luders 33, sailed by the famous boy-cruiser Robin Lee Graham; the Seawind 30, first fiberglass boat to circumnavigate; and the Princess is the one that still commands the most loyal following among modern cruising sailors. Though the Princess is undeniably a chunky craft, it is not unattractive. Its somewhat exaggerated sheer line leads up to a high bow, but blends nicely with its moderate overhangs and shoal-draft cutaway full keel. The boat’s performance under sail, though is smooth and steady. The Princess is a bit beamy for a vessel of its vintage, and this combined with the shallow keel and modestly sized ketch rig makes it slow to windward but when the seas kick-up and other light weight boats seek shelter the Princess comes into her own. A ketch-rigged Princess is very versitle and will sail best on a reach. The long keel tracks well, the ketch rig is easy to balance, and together with the non-reversing worm-gear steering found on most Princesses, makes it very easy to leave the helm unattended for long periods. The boat rarely buries its rail, and otherwise has a comfortable motion in a seaway. As with all boats built by Allied, construction is very strong and simple. The Princess hull is solid hand-laid fiberglass–24-ounce woven roving and mat with a surface layer of cloth under the gel-coat–with thicker laminate at the turn of the bilge and down low around the keel. The ballast is lead, glassed over and encapsulated within the keel. The deck is balsa-cored. All bulkheads are tabbed directly to the hull. The rudder stock, impressively, is bronze. For coastal or offshore cruising the Princess is certainly one that deserves a look, she will take you anywhere you want to go in comfort and safety. It will serve admirably, too, as a coastal cruiser in any deep-water locale, as long as you aren’t too worried about getting places in a hurry. With its stout construction and easy motion it is also a good candidate for blue-water cruising. I am the third owner of the Princess, owner #1 was a doctor whom kept the boat in Va. On the hard 6mos out of the year, owner #2 bought the boat in 98 and cruised until 2000 when I purchase the boat and have had her since doing most of the up-grades.
