RYA training around the world

Since RYA Training began in 1970, its international reach has expanded well beyond UK waters, with courses now available at over 2,400 RYA recognised training centres across 58 countries worldwide.

Although the weather, sea conditions and local marine laws may vary between locations, the syllabus of each course is standardised. Comprehensive instructor training and impeccable training centre standards mean that the quality of teaching is outstanding across the board. So, while the climate may be considerably different for an RYA Day Skipper course  held in the UK compared to the equivalent in Australia, you can be certain that the teachings will be the same.

With RYA training now renowned the world over for its reputable teaching standards and RYA qualifications considered a trusted gauge of high-level sailing competence on a global scale, RYA courses are creating waves of change within the sport internationally.

Here, we speak to RYA training centres across the globe to find out about how RYA training has impacted the development of international sailing activities.

RYA Training in Europe

Fancy learning how to skipper a sailing yacht in exciting new waters or want to complete the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course  in sunnier climes? Well, with over 600 RYA training centres located in Europe, there are plenty of schools to choose from.

Corfu Sea School offers a wide range of courses for its students including RYA Day Skipper and Competent Crew.

Steve Hills, the school’s Principal, and an RYA Yachtmaster™ Instructor and Examiner, tells us that being an RYA recognised training centre has really helped to raise awareness of the school in the local area. Furthermore, by only providing RYA courses, the centre poses little competitive threat to local yacht charter companies, allowing them to collaborate with other businesses for mutual benefit.

rya powerboat level 2 florida

And it’s not just about raising the profile of the business; offering RYA training courses in Greece has significantly benefited Steve’s students too. Not only can they learn about stern-to-moorings and local customs, but they can also enjoy sailing in a temperate climate.

Steve and his team also take time to put students in contact with reputable charter companies and ensure they understand how to get the most from the area when going ashore. This combination of courses along with expert local knowledge gives students a good variety of skills and experience that boosts their confidence to explore and enjoy the scenic cruising grounds of Greece, no matter how far away from home they are.

RYA Training Courses Down Under

In 2002, the RYA Yachtmaster™ scheme  was expanded overseas, and RYA training centres were soon established in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

Based on the sun-drenched shoreline of Manly in Queensland, Australia, Southern Cross Yachting was set up in 1997. In 2003, it was the first school to gain RYA recognition in Australia. The school’s Principal, Mike Job, tells us that becoming an RYA training centre was an easy decision and the transition was seamless,

“I had been a senior Instructor at an RYA school in the UK before returning to Aus to open Southern Cross Yachting, so we were already following RYA guidelines when we gained our RYA training recognition,” says Mike. “Our location also helps. Moreton Bay, with its busy commercial port, numerous harbours and anchorages, quiet creeks, large tidal range and sandbanks and reefs, is like the Solent with sunshine!”

rya powerboat level 2 florida

Mike tells us that becoming an RYA recognised training centre has meant that his students have access to all the training materials and resources that the RYA provides, as well as the excellent instructor training and support. But it is the wide recognition and acceptance of RYA qualifications around the world that is the biggest benefit for those who learn with him.

In 2008, the RYA Yachtmaster™ scheme became the National Yacht training programme of Australia.

“We are incredibly proud to be an RYA training centre,” explains Mike, “the brand is recognised in Australia as the industry standard.”

Furthermore, RYA training courses have allowed Mike’s students to achieve incredible lifelong goals. From competing in the Sydney to Hobart race and circumnavigating the world to skippering a winning entry in the Clipper Round the World Race and crossing oceans single-handed, Mike is very proud of his students’ successes. He also recognises the value that RYA training can bring to people who are just starting out in sailing and want to get out on the water for the first time,

“The multitude of people that have simply come to take up sailing, who we have been able to help fulfil dreams and change their lives with RYA training, is what makes it all worthwhile.”

Training International Crew

After working as a yacht captain on private yachts, Steve Jakeway began a career in powerboat training. He qualified as an RYA Instructor and gained many years of experience teaching before opening The Ocean Academy in Florida in 2019. Steve knew from the very beginning that he wanted his school to be an RYA recognised training centre.

“I have always been impressed at the quality, integrity and leadership of the RYA. When it was time to start my own school, it was an easy decision. There is no better training scheme in the world, in my opinion, and the excellent reputation of the RYA globally has helped my school to thrive,” Steve explains.

rya powerboat level 2 florida

And it seems that the training is working; Steve tells us that many of his students have benefited significantly from the high standards of training that the RYA courses deliver and have made substantial progress in their careers as a result.

“I have dozens of examples of yacht crew that have advanced in their positions, many starting with basic level courses and advancing to Chief Mate or Captain,” he explains. “Many others have benefitted from the excellent RYA training to enter the MCA OOW programs and beyond .”

This clearly shows the positive, life-changing impact that RYA training can have on students. Not only can they look forward to a lifelong career in the marine industry, but their RYA qualifications can also help them find work anywhere in the world.

RYA Training in Multiple Languages

In 2004, the RYA granted the first rights for RYA Publications to be licensed in Spanish, German, Japanese and many other languages. Then, in 2018, RYA training courses were delivered in a foreign language for the very first time with the dinghy and windsurfing schemes becoming available in Mandarin at RYA recognised training centres in China.

Since this significant milestone in RYA training history, the RYA has worked closely with the Chinese Yachting Association to help make sailing more accessible and mainstream in China. RYA Director of Training and Qualifications, Richard Falk, commented at the time:

“We are delighted to be working with the CYA to further develop the provision of sailing in China. Through this exciting collaboration, we hope to make RYA recognition more accessible to Chinese training centres and to drive opportunities for instructor training, ultimately promoting and supporting the growth of sailing more generally within China.”

rya powerboat level 2 florida

At the time of the launch, the CYA Vice General-Secretary, Danqing Fu, commented on the high standards of RYA training and the benefit of RYA training centres to the sport’s future in China,

“The CYA is dedicated to increasing the accessibility of training in order to promote the sport of sailing, in a safe and more standardised way. RYA training is known as the very highest standard, and we are pleased to be working together to boost the development of the Chinese sailing industry and to popularise sailing among the youth and masses in China.”

In the future, it is hoped that RYA training will be made even more accessible to international students, with people from all over the world able to enrol on an RYA course in their chosen location.

50 Years of RYA Training

The RYA introduced the dinghy and coaching schemes in 1970 to help clubs and sailing schools by providing a national syllabus and method of learning to sail. Fifty years on, the RYA has a network of more than 2,400 training centres in 58 countries and supports the delivery of over 100 courses.

Read about the 50 th anniversary celebrations at www.rya.org.uk/go/50years . Or to join the millions of boaters who have trained with the RYA, visit www.rya.org.uk/training .

RYA CoC exam for Power Boats

What training and preparation should I undertake before taking the exam

2 Year relevant experience, including night pilotage. Ideally around 30 days, 2 days as skipper. 800 miles and 12-night hours. If you hold and RYA advance Power Boat course completion certificate the sea time is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles and 12-night hours. Your theory knowledge should be at Yachtmaster theory level.

This will vary from person to person, but it is easy to underestimate the level that you need to be at for the Advanced Examination. The common mistake to make is to assume that because you have taken the Advanced Powerboat Course that you are at the right level. The Advanced Powerboat Course is a good work-up to the exam and certainly most people should undertake it. However, by way of example the Advanced Course may introduce you to night navigation whereas the exam requires you to demonstrate a high degree of competence at night way above the level you would have been at if the Advanced Course was your first trip out at night. In short, the advanced course introduces techniques and methods whilst the exam tests that using those techniques and methods is second nature to you. This will only be the case if you have invested plenty of time practicing the methods and actually put them into practice on real passages.

Make sure that ahead of the exam that you ensure that your theory is fully up to scratch (you need to be at the level of RYA Yachtmaster Theory) and put time in ensuring your close quarter boat handling is very good in any conditions. You should be able to put a RIB into almost any marina berth the examiner chooses either bow or stern first in any conditions. Practicing the various pilotage techniques, you will use day and night to ensure you are totally happy with their use is of course essential.

The examiner has to judge whether to recommend that you are capable of being responsible for 12 passengers, so he/she has to be sure that you have the necessary skills.

Charter of RIB for examination cost varies according to number of examinees. One person £210, Two persons £120 per head, Three persons £80 per head plus the RYA exam fee.

Aimed at those already working as a tender driver transferring guests/passengers in sectors such as the superyacht world or in other environments where you may need to transfer guests and passengers.

COURSE DURATION

2 days. We start at 9am on day one and will finish about 2 – 3 hours after it gets dark. On day two we start at 10am and typically finish between 4 and 5pm.

INSTRUCTOR – STUDENT RATIO

3 students to 1 Instructor. You will often find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE

The entry requirement for this course is RYA Powerboat Level 2 course with the strong recommendation that attendees already possess the RYA VHF Short Range Radio Certificate and the RYA or STCW95 one day First Aid qualification.

Course Price £180 Per Person

If you are looking to use your own boat or hire a boat, which is up to 10m in length, especially when abroad, then it is almost certain you will need to hold the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

There are no prerequisites or formal qualifications required for you to take an ICC assessment but it is recommended that you have the experience up to Day Skipper level.

If you already have an appropriate RYA qualification you will be able to apply for the ICC directly without the need for an assessment. Being a powerboat school we can teach you on a Rib or your powerboat.

If you want to learn on a cruising vessel over 10 meters then we can arrange that for you too.

The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or Boat License as it’s often referred to can be issued to:  UK Nationals  UK Residents

Other Countries that have accepted Resolution 40 can also apply for an ICC here in the UK, please follow the link below and go to section 2 of the application form to see if you are eligible:

Rya powerboat level 2.

  • August 2, 2023

RYA Powerboat level 2 is great to have if you are a Deckhand on board a Yacht that have been assigned Tender Driving duties on a Yacht, the Chief Officer on board would need you to have a RYA Powerboat Level 2 License. This is mandatory in the Mediterranean when driving tenders for Owners and Guests and when it comes to senior Deckhands it is mandatory to have together with your Basic Safety Training and ENG1 Medical Certificate. The Powerboat Level 2 is a course issued by RYA.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 Yacht Crew Training

Do you need Powerboat Level 2 to get a Yacht Deckhand Job?

The Bosun, Lead Deckhand and Senior Deckhands 100% have the Powerboat Level 2 certificate. If you are just starting out as a Deckhand looking for your job it is not always necessary, since you probably would have more senior crew driving the tenders. After 1-2 months on board your first Deckhand job, it would be good to re-invest your salary to get the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate and start operating the Yacht Tenders.

The minimum certificates recommended for a Junior Deckhand are:

  • STCW Basic Safety
  • ENG1 Medical Certificate
  • STCW Personal Designated Security Duties
  • Seamans Discharge book
  • Professional Deckhand CV

What is included in the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Yacht Crew training course?

This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low-speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planning speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken on the coast and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.

During the RYA Powerboat Level 2 training you will learn:

  • Launching and Recovery
  • Boat Handling
  • Securing to a Buoy
  • Berthing and Unberthing
  • Man, Overboard Situations

Should all Yacht Crew have Powerboat Level 2 Training?

If you are a Stewardess , Chef or Engineer a Powerboat License on most Yachts will not be necessary. The license only needs to be held by the crew on board that will be driving the tenders in order to operate them legally. Each country has its own national Powerboat License, RYA is a UK license and the most common one. But there is a good chance another Powerboat license will be equivalent. If you have the budget and look to become a Deckhand it would be good to have the RYA Powerboat level 2 certificate.

Should I include Powerboat Level 2 when writing my Deckhand CV?

When a Chief Officer or Captain looks for new Deckhand to join, he might need someone with a Powerboat Level 2 license, if he does not have Deckhands on board having this already, it just makes his life easier on board knowing that all deckhand crew have got the license and it would look good on your Deckhand CV.When you book Deckhand Premium STCW Training we also write your Deckhand CV for you.

  • Personal Designated Security Duties
  • YCA Deckhand Training
  • Deckhand CV Writing

He secured his first job on a 90m Motor yacht MY Ectasea, despite not having completed his RYA Powerboat level 2 training.  So, it is not always necessary for a Junior Deckhand starting his first job. Once completing the first month on board he used his salary to add the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate to his CV and qualifications in his new Deckhand roles.

The Powerboat Level 2 course is a two day training in the use of powered boats. Typically open boats up to about 10 meters in length, but sheltered wheelhouses are also possible. The maximum number of students is three, and we will spend 80% of our time afloat, giving you plenty of time actually maneuvering the boat.

Many fast boat owners have used this course to feel comfortable on higher speeds and in crowded marinas. We can offer own boat tuition on our or your location. Most of our courses are bespoke and not visible on our website. You can receive dates through our newsletter.

If you need a commercial endorsement, we can offer all courses needed.

Recognition in Spain

Unlike the United Kingdom, Spain requires that skippers hold a boat licence to operate boats flying a Spanish flag. The same rule applies if you buy a boat or rent a boat. Navigating the waters with an RYA qualification in Spain varies depending on several factors including the boat’s flag state, the pilot’s nationality, residence, and the boating location. Here’s a summary:

UK Citizens or Residents : Post-BREXIT, Spain recognizes RYA qualifications for UK citizens or residents. This makes it easier for them to rent boats or sail their own in Spanish waters. UK-flagged boats require no additional steps, but boats under the Spanish flag need registration for authorization; the process is automatic and simple.

Non-UK Citizens with Non-Spanish Flagged Boats : To navigate in Spanish waters, a valid boating license from the boat’s flag country or the skipper’s country of origin or residence is necessary. RYA qualifications are generally accepted if recognized in the skipper’s home country. Carrying proof of a qualification’s acceptance, such as a letter from an insurance broker, is advisable.

Non-UK Citizens with Spanish Flagged Boats : The General Directorate of Merchant Marine allows EEA citizens and those from specific countries to skipper Spanish-flagged recreational boats with a license from their home country. In practice, most boat clubs and charter companies accept RYA qualifications.

Overall, while RYA qualifications are highly regarded, their acceptability in Spain is nuanced and varies based on specific circumstances, especially concerning the boat’s flag state and the skipper’s nationality or residency.

As a school recognised by the Spanish Maritime Authority, The Boat School can issue a Spanish Boat Licence to students who have successfully completed the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course. This option is not available for every course.

You can find out more about the Spanish Boat Licence here.

International recognition

On successful completion of an RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course, UK nationals and nationals of certain other countries (Recognition) automatically qualify for an ICC issued by the RYA (see the tab “ICC”).

The ICC is widely recognised as evidence of competence in most European countries.

On successful completion of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course, UK nationals and nationals of certain other countries automatically qualify for an ICC (International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) issued by the RYA.

The UK ICC is issued by the RYA issued in conformity with Resolution No. 40 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Working Party on Inland Water Transport. The certificate is available to a person who fulfils the following eligibility criteria:

1) has reached the age of 16. 2) is physically and mentally fit to operate a pleasure craft. 3) holds the Powerboat Level 2 course completion certificate. 4) meets the nationality requirements.

Who can get an ICC from the RYA?

The following countries have NOT yet adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE. If you are a national of one of these countries and you are resident in that country or another country on this list the RYA WILL issue you with an ICC.

Albania Andorra Armenia Azerbaijan Bosnia and Herzegovina Canada Cyprus Denmark Estonia France Georgia Greece Iceland Israel Italy Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan Liechtenstein Malta Moldova Monaco Montenegro Netherlands* Poland Portugal Russian Federation San Marino Serbia Slovenia Spain Sweden Tajikistan The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Turkey Turkmenistan United States of America Uzbekistan

*The Netherlands has adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE; however, the Dutch Government has given the RYA special permission to issue the ICC.

Who can’t get an ICC from the RYA?

The following countries have adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE. If you are a national of one of these countries and are resident in that country or another country on this list the RYA WILL NOT issue you with an ICC. If you are a national of one of the countries on this list, you should be able to obtain an ICC from your own Government provided you are able to meet their requirements.

Austria Belarus Belgium Bulgaria Croatia Czech Republic Finland Germany Hungary Ireland Latvia Lithuania Luxembourg Norway Romania Slovakia Switzerland Ukraine
