Surprise Spirit of Lorina double win as lumpy conditions challenge Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup fleet.

After a near perfect opening to the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, day two was more challenging. Conditions had dropped to a 20 knot northerly come start time, but there had been big onshore breeze overnight and a left-over sea state remained, made more lumpy by waves bouncing back off the rocky shoreline.

In Maxi C, Jean-Pierre Barjon’s 65ft Spirit of Lorina won her second consecutive race and by no small margin – 13 minutes 28 second ahead of Riccardo De Michele’s 78 footer H20, which won straight bullets last year.

Astern, H20 scored two seconds and in third is Aldo Parisotto’s Oscar 3.

Tuesday former IMA President Thomas Bscher didn’t compete on his Baltic 68 Café Racer Open Season, nor did Tara Getty’s S&S classic Baruna of 1938.

Maxi C was already two light after Dario Castiglia’s Baltic 65 Re/Max One 2 was put out of the regatta Monday after she struck a rock by La Maddalena at around 12 knots.

Sadly Luigi Sala’s Yoru was close behind at the time and, despite taking avoiding action, was unable to avoid ramming her stern, which holed her low down on the port side of her bow.

Enjoying an even better scoreline is the Swedish-owned Svea in the J Class which won both Monday’s windward-leewards and Tuesday’s coastal.

Topaz retired after blowing up two kites leaving Svea and Velsheda to match race.

There was delight for Pier Luigi Loro Piana on his Club Swan 80 My Song which won Maxi A.

Fastest around the course for a second day was Roberto Lacorte’s Flying Nikka in 2 hours 55 minutes 56 seconds while first non-flying maxi home was Peter Harburg’s 100ft Black Jack in 3 hours 21 minutes and 40 seconds.

Monday’s Maxi A IRC corrected time winner Leopard 3 was second after David M Leuschen and Chris Flowers’ Galateia and Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones’ Magic Carpet Cubed both blew up kites. EWOL Way of Life retired after she broke her mainsail headboard.

In the Super Maxi class there is now a three way tie at the top between Juan Ball’s Swan 115 Moat, Claus-Peter Offen’s 101ft y3k and Marco Vogele’s 108ft Inoui after Moat won Mondays by 1 minutes 48 seconds and Vittorio Moretti’s 118ft Viriella retired.

One of the closest finishes was between the former Maxi 72s in Maxi 2 where George Sakellaris’ Proteus won by just 19 seconds from Hap Fauth’s Bella Mente after Peter Dubens’ North Star retired with bowsprit issues and Cannonball blew up a spinnaker.

The biggest win by far Tuesday was in the Maxi Multihull class where Adrian Keller’s 84ft Allegra won by 1h 37m 38s on ORCmh corrected time from Don Wilson and Suna Said’s Gunboat 68 Convexity2. Lord Irvine Laidlaw’s Gunboat 80 Highland Fling 18 did not compete.

Tactician Paul Larsen said of Allegra’s race: “These were our conditions. It was properly lumpy so we started with one reef which we shook out later – we have an owner-driver and on this course we are sailing in close quarters with two other hot boats.”

Wednesday the wind forecast to lighten.

Teasing Machine wins Middle Sea Race

Malta (October 26, 2022) – After the multihull and monohull elapsed time winners of the 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Race finished yesterday , Eric de Turckheim’s French NMYD 54 Teasing Machine today was confirmed as the overall IRC winner of the 43rd edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race with an elapsed time of 03:12:01:54.

“It is a huge emotion winning the Rolex Middle Sea Race,” said de Turckheim. “It is our first 600 (nm) race overall, after making several podiums around the world. On top of that, it is certainly our favourite 600nm race because of the complexity of the course, the complexity of the winds.

“I have a passion for the 600nm races. It’s like running a marathon. It’s a mixture of being competitive 24 hours after 24 hours, and having the resistance and the teamwork. It was our seventh race and experience counts a lot.”

de Turckheim, also the Royal Ocean Racing Club Vice Commodore, is a force to be reckoned with in any offshore race. Teasing Machine’s record at the Rolex Middle Sea Race was already exceptional before this overall win. A class winner and third overall in 2017, on the NMYD 54’s debut, was followed up with second in class in 2019, third in class in 2020, and second in class in 2021.

Teasing Machine is the fourth French yacht to have won the Rolex Middle Sea Race following in the footsteps of Antares (1981), Spirit of Ad Hoc (2008), and Courrier Recommandé (2018). Day 5 – IRC Class Update – 1600 CEST:

With the confirmation that Teasing Machine cannot be beaten by those left on the racecourse, attention turns to the class standings and the respective podiums. Only IRC 1 has a full complement of finishers in the clubhouse and so, for the boats still racing, there is plenty to play for

As at 1600 CEST today, 17 yachts racing under IRC Time Correction for the Rolex Middle Sea Race Trophy have completed the course. Thirty-eight boats have officially retired mostly due to the continuing lack of wind across the course area and little prospect of substantial change. Forty-three boats are still racing under IRC.

IRC 1 – ALL YACHTS FINISHED OR RETIRED Jean-Pierre Barjon’s Botin 65 Spirit of Lorina (FRA) converted the time correction lead that she held at Pantelleria into a class win. Marton Josza’s Reichel/Pugh 60 Wild Joe (HUN) had traded the lead with Spirit of Lorina for much of the race, and was on the podium at all transit points except Lampedusa. A superb recovery only final open water leg enabled the DSS foil equipped boat to leapfrog Cippa Lippa X and Rán, to take second place, 50 minutes off the winning pace. Niklas Zennstrom’s CF 520 Rán (SWE) eventually placed third, only seven minutes behind Wild Joe on corrected time and 30 minutes ahead of Guido Paolo Gamucci’s Mylius 60 Cippa Lippa X (ITA) in fourth.

IRC 2 – FOUR HOME Eric de Turckheim’s NMYD 54 Teasing Machine (FRA) made a strong finish to the race. Off the podium at Stromboli, she was up to second at Favignana, and into a two hour lead at Lampedusa. The TP52 Red Bandit (GER), skippered by Carl-Peter Forster was on the podium from the start, falling off only at Favignana. Unable to make any gains against Teasing Machine on the leg to Comino, Red Bandit currently holds a substantial lead over Gerald Logel’s IRC 52 Arobas2 (FRA) and Gregor Stimpfl’s Scuderia 65 Hägar V, the other two finishers in third and fourth respectively. Five yachts are still racing, including the Frederic Puzin’s Ker 46 Daguet 3- Corum (FRA), which for a long time was looking a good bet for the overall podium but whose challenge appears to have been undone by the diminishing wind conditions. The Katarzyna Ostrowska skippered Tripp 50, Fast Furious (POL) is last boat in class on the course, just south of the Egadi Islands.

IRC 3 – LEADER ROUND LAMPEDUSA James Neville’s HH42 Ino XXX (GBR) is on the penultimate leg from Lampedusa to the South Comino Channel with 70nm to run. Meanwhile, Artie III (MLT) co-skippered by Lee Satariano and Christian Ripard, is making ‘rapid’ progress towards Lampedusa chased by Dominique Tian’s Ker 46 Tonnerre de Glen. For so long, Artie and Ino were joined at the hip. At Pantelleria, Ino’s lead was 23 minutes on corrected time. Yesterday afternoon the elastic snapped and Ino escaped while Artie wallowed. Ino is not out of trouble and has endured a difficult fifth day so far. Artie is currently sailing twice as fast as Ino XXX, with twice the distance to cover. Last boat in IRC 3 on the water is Bernard Hyde’ New Zealand entry High 5, currently located just south of the Egadi Islands.

IRC 4 – LEADERS AROUND PANTELLERIA At the Pantelleria transit, Philippe Frantz’s NMD 43 Albator (FRA) held a seven hour advantage over, currently, second placed Esentia (POL), the Grand Soleil 44 entered by Marcin Sutkowski. Conor Doyle’s Xp50 Freya (IRL) is in third on the water abeam of Pantelleria, while the Podesta’s Farr 45 Elusive 2, for so long leading the class on time correction, has just reached the isolated island. The situation in this class will become clearer once both are through the transit. IRC 4 yachts stretch back to San Vito Lo Capo, where Maks Vrecko’s Elan 450 Karpo (SLO) is last boat on the water in.

IRC 5 – TEVERE MON ILE AT PANTELLERIA Gianrocco Catalano’s First 40 Tevere Remo Mon Ile (ITA) has made Pantelleria and continues to hold an impressive lead. Ed Bell’s JPK 1180 Dawn Treader (GBR) has managed to reduce it by 8nm since yesterday’s update, but the Romans on board Tevere Remo Mon Ile are still 27nm ahead. Beppe Bisotto’s Fast 42 Atame (ITA), racing double handed with Catherine Jordan, is 83nm behind the class leader. Atame is now third in class after Johnathan Gambin’s Dufour 44 Ton Laferla (MLT) retired yesterday.

IRC 6 – STILL NORTH OF SICILY Massimo Juris’ JPK 1080 Colombre (ITA) leads on the water and after IRC time correction according to the tracker. Colombre is sailing downwind to Pantelleria in light and variable winds. The chasing pack are closing the gap and seem to be in better breeze. Colombre’s nearest rival is now Ludovic Gérard’s JPK 1080 Solenn for Pure Ocean (FRA), racing double handed and which passed Seb Ripard’s J/99 Calypso (MLT) at Favignana. Calypso is now third on the water and in ranking. The smallest boats in the race are finally into good wind north of Sicily and making progress towards Favignana where spirits will be raised as they finally turn their bows south towards the finish.

IRC Double Handed With the retirement of Red Ruby today, Solenn for Pure Ocean now leads IRC Double Handed standings. Beppe Bisotto’s Fast 42 Atame (ITA) is ranked second and locked in battle with Marco Paolucci’s Comet 45R Libertine (ITA) in third, 2nm apart.

Race details – Tracking – Entrants

About the Race: The 43rd edition attracted a fleet of 120 entrants from 25 countries, getting underway October 22, 2022.

The Rolex Middle Sea Race was established as the result of sporting rivalry between great friends, Jimmy White and Alan Green, two Englishmen residing in Malta, together with Paul and John Ripard, two Maltese members of the Royal Malta Yacht Club.

Jimmy, Alan (later to become the Race Director of the Royal Ocean Racing Club), Paul and John would eventually map a course designed to offer an exciting race in different conditions to those prevailing in the immediate Maltese coastal waters.

The 606nm course, essentially a clockwise circumnavigation of Sicily starting and finishing in Malta, would be slightly longer than the RORC’s longest race, the Rolex Fastnet. The resulting course is the same as used today, although sailed in the reverse direction. The Rolex Middle Sea Race course record has been broken on five occasions since the inaugural edition in 1968.

The course record, established by George David’s 90-foot Rambler (USA) in 2007, is 47hrs 55mins 03 secs. The multihull record of 49 hours, 25 minutes, 1 second was set by the Multi70 Maserati in 2016.

First bullet for bullitt as svea and spirit of lorina remain unbeaten at maxi yacht rolex cup.

For day three of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in conjunction with the International Maxi Association, the wind on the Costa Smeralda was still from the north but marginally lighter (12-16 knots) than Tuesday. The sea was flatter, albeit with the occasional large, left-over waves ready to drench any unwary crew. With the wind due to lighten in the afternoon, start times were advanced by an hour and a 26 mile course was set for Maxi C, anti-clockwise around La Maddalena. The remaining classes sailed a similar 30 mile lap, rounding Spargi too. The Js raced two further windward-leewards. At just over the half way stage of the event some are already looking invincible at the top of their classes; others less so. In Maxi B, the former Maxi 72s now have a tie at the top after four races, including two windward-leewards. After finishing close to yesterday’s winner George Sakellaris’ Proteus, Hap Fauth’s Bella Mente finally prevailed today.

“We like these conditions. Tactically we didn’t go in the wrong place like we did yesterday. We had a spinnaker blow-out, but the boys did a fantastic dry peel,” observed Fauth. His tactician Terry Hutchinson, taking time off from Fauth’s American Magic America’s Cup challenge, added: “We got a good start to leeward of the group. The fleet was taking a bit of right so we changed our plan with two minutes to go and decided to start to the left. Once we led around the top mark it was simply a case of letting the boat do the work for you.” Today Bella Mente beat Proteus by two minutes 56 seconds under IRC.

Claus-Peter Offen’s y3k secured her second victory in the Super Maxi class, this time by one minute from Marco Vogele’s 111ft Inoui. The brand new 101 footer leads overall by just one point from Inoui, which has finished second in every race. “It is Groundhog Day,” observed Chris Main, tactician on Inoui, which is back at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup for the first time since 2019. “The boat is going great. The owner enjoys the racing, the whole concept. There is no pressure.”

Juan Ball’s Swan 115 Moat won Super Maxi yesterday but could only manage third today. Tactician Guillermo Parada (a YCCS favourite having helmed their TP52 Azzurra for a decade) said of today’s race: “It wasn’t the best day for us: The course didn’t suit us because there was only one beat and then there weren’t a lot of options. y3k did a good job keeping close to us - at times they were even catching us. I hope we can do better over the next days.”

The Maxi Multihull class was back up to three. Irvine Laidlaw’s brand new Gunboat 80 Highland Fling 18 returned to the race course guns blazing, the red catamaran scoring her first ever bullet, albeit by just 14 seconds from Adrian Keller’s 84ft catamaran Allegra, which still leads the new class with a near perfect scoreline.

“The course we had today was just fabulous,” said Laidlaw. “Particularly of course it suited the cats very well because it was a lot of reaching, but still we changed sails all the time. It had a bit of everything - the wind was fantastic and the competition was really good. So a great day.”

Another to score her first bullet today was…Bullitt, Andrea Recordati’s 93 footer, although the highly consistent 2-3-2 of David M Leuschen and Chris Flowers’ Galateia has caused their white 100 footer to take the lead in Maxi A. She is now four points ahead of previous leader Leopard 3, which today finished a disappointing eighth after suffering problems with their spinnaker furler.

“The first upwind was key, to hold our position with Galateia and V and get to the top mark close to them,” explained Bullitt’s tactician Joca Signorini. “From there we sailed the boat to its best potential. The guys did an amazing job in all the manoeuvres, sailing the boat very fast as well. Some boats had issues and we had to sail around them while Magic Carpet was behind us, attacking. After that it was a bit easier.” This is Bullitt’s first event following a substantial refit. Signorini added that it was the first occasion this week they have enjoyed a trouble-free race (on Monday they retired with engine/hydraulic issues).

The newly formed V team on the ex-Tango 100 footer, is currently fifth in Maxi A, despite her new owner being brand new to racing. “He is having an absolute blast,” said tactician Ken Read. “It is an okay performance so far, but in terms of his program it is spectacular. We are really pleased.”

Of today’s race Read said: “We started at the weather end - previously we have been down towards the pin and could never cross. We wanted to get to the right, so we had a good first beat and were first around the weather mark.” He added: “We have an Achilles’ heel reaching and we’ve had three reaching races. The boat was designed to be a light air windward-leeward boat with very little rocker.”

In Maxi C, Jean-Pierre Barjon 65ft Spirit of Lorina maintained her perfect scoreline finishing ahead of the 78ft H2O by almost five minutes under IRC. With her string of seconds, H2O remains second with Aldo Parisotto’s Mylius 65FD Oscar 3 third, but just two points ahead Massimiliano Florio's Southern Wind 82 Grande Orazio. IMA President Benoît de Froidmont's 60ft Wallyño salvaged a creditable 7th in the 16 boat class after being called OCS.

While H2O won here last year with straight bullets, they are scratching their heads as to how Spirit of Lorina is so dominant this week. “The course over the last three days we have had the same [reaching] angles,” observed H2O’s owner Riccardo De Michele, who has competed in every Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup since 2007, winning class five times– certainly the most capped and most consistently successful competitor here ever. This is due to their well-developed yacht, the team effectively run by Stefano Leonardi, still with 70% of her original crew. “Spirit of Lorina and ourselves have a small advantage over the other boats reaching, but we are two completely different types of boat in terms of our performance: Lorina is more racer than cruiser compared to us.” Today the French boat beat them by almost five minutes under IRC.

The Js raced two more windward-leewards with Niklas Zennström and Filip Engelbert’s 43.6m Svea, winning both to maintain their perfect scoreline. Neither race was perfect for the Swedes – in the first, approaching the first top mark, they blew up a jib; in the second they didn’t get the ideal start, so vital in these races.

“It was windier than we thought it would be - it almost built,” said Svea’s navigator/strategist Steve Hayles. “It is fun, the three boats having a small rating difference. We are still learning - I feel lucky to have Bouwe [Bekking, J Class World Champion] here, but it hasn’t been straightforward - a couple of things have gone our way which could have gone another way…”

At 1600 CEST on Wednesday, 26 October, the winner of the 43rd edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race was announced as Eric de Turckheim's French NMYD 54 Teasing Machine. 

  The Royal Malta Yacht Club has confirmed that none of the remaining yachts still racing is able to better Teasing Machine’s corrected time under IRC. 

  “It is a huge emotion winning the Rolex Middle Sea Race,” said de Turckheim. “It is our first 600 (nm) race overall, after making several podiums around the world. On top of that, it is certainly our favourite 600nm race because of the complexity of the course, the complexity of the winds.”

  “I have a passion for the 600nm races,” he continued. “It’s like running a marathon. It’s a mixture of being competitive 24 hours after 24 hours, and having the resistance and the teamwork. It was our seventh race and experience counts a lot.”

A class winner and third overall in 2017, on the NMYD 54’s debut,  was followed up with second in class in 2019, third in class in 2020, and second in class in 2021. Teasing Machine is the fourth French yacht to have won the Rolex Middle Sea Race following in the footsteps of Antares (1981), Spirit of Ad Hoc (2008) and Courrier Recommandé (2018). 

Day 5 IRC Class Update 1600 CEST   With the confirmation that Teasing Machine cannot be beaten by those left on the racecourse, attention turns to the class standings and the respective podiums. Only IRC 1 has a full complement of finishers in the clubhouse and so, for the boats still racing, there is plenty to play for.

  As at 1600 CEST on Wednesday, 26 October, 17 yachts racing under IRC Time Correction for the Rolex Middle Sea Race Trophy have completed the course. 38 boats have officially retired mostly due to the continuing lack of wind across the course area and little prospect of substantial change. 43 boats are still racing under IRC.

  IRC 1 – ALL YACHTS FINISHED OR RETIRED Jean-Pierre Barjon’s Botin 65 Spirit of Lorina (FRA) converted the time correction lead that she held at Pantelleria into a class win. Marton Josza’s Reichel/Pugh 60 Wild Joe (HUN) had traded the lead with Spirit of Lorina for much of the race, and was on the podium at all transit points except Lampedusa. A superb recovery on the final open water leg enabled the DSS foil equipped boat to leapfrog Cippa Lippa X and Rán, to take second place, 50 minutes off the winning pace. Niklas Zennstrom’s CF 520 Rán (SWE) eventually placed third, only seven minutes behind Wild Joe on corrected time and 30 minutes ahead of Guido Paolo Gamucci’s Mylius 60 Cippa Lippa X (ITA) in fourth.

  IRC 2 – FOUR HOME Eric de Turckheim’s NMYD 54 Teasing Machine (FRA) made a strong finish to the race. Off the podium at Stromboli, she was up to second at Favignana, and into a two hour lead at Lampedusa. The TP52 Red Bandit (GER), skippered by Carl-Peter Forster was on the podium from the start, falling off only at Favignana. Unable to make any gains against Teasing Machine on the leg to Comino, Red Bandit currently holds a substantial lead over Gerald Logel’s IRC 52 Arobas2 (FRA) and Gregor Stimpfl’s Scuderia 65 Hägar V, the other two finishers in third and fourth respectively. Five yachts are still racing, including the Frederic Puzin’s Ker 46 Daguet 3- Corum (FRA), which for a long time was looking a good bet for the overall podium but whose challenge appears to have been undone by the diminishing wind conditions. The Katarzyna Ostrowska skippered Tripp 50, Fast Furious (POL) is last boat in class on the course, just south of the Egadi Islands.

  IRC 3 – LEADER ROUND LAMPEDUSA James Neville’s HH42 Ino XXX (GBR) is on the penultimate leg from Lampedusa to the South Comino Channel with 70nm to run. Meanwhile, Artie III (MLT) co-skippered by Lee Satariano and Christian Ripard, is making ‘rapid’ progress towards Lampedusa chased by Dominique Tian’s Ker 46 Tonnerre de Glen (FRA). For so long, Artie and Ino were joined at the hip. At Pantelleria, Ino’s lead was 23 minutes on corrected time. Yesterday afternoon the elastic snapped and Ino escaped while Artie wallowed. Ino is not out of trouble and has endured a difficult fifth day so far. Artie is currently sailing twice as fast as Ino XXX, with twice the distance to cover. Last boat in IRC 3 on the water is Bernard Hyde’ New Zealand entry High 5, currently located just south of the Egadi Islands.

IRC 4 yachts stretch back to San Vito Lo Capo, where Maks Vrecko’s Elan 450 Karpo (SLO) is last boat on the water in class.

  IRC 5 – TEVERE MON ILE AT PANTELLERIA. Gianrocco Catalano’s First 40 Tevere Remo Mon Ile (ITA) has made Pantelleria and continues to hold an impressive lead. Ed Bell’s JPK 1180 Dawn Treader (GBR) has managed to reduce it by 8nm since yesterday’s update, but the Romans on board Tevere Remo Mon Ile are still 27nm ahead. Beppe Bisotto’s Fast 42 Atame (ITA), racing double handed with Catherine Jordan, is 83nm behind the class leader. Atame is now third in class after Jonathan Gambin’s Dufour 44 Ton Ton Laferla (MLT) retired yesterday.

  IRC 6 – STILL NORTH OF SICILY Massimo Juris’ JPK 1080 Colombre (ITA) leads on the water and after IRC time correction according to the tracker. Colombre is sailing downwind to Pantelleria in light and variable winds. The chasing pack are closing the gap and seem to be in better breeze. Colombre’s nearest rival is now Ludovic Gérard’s JPK 1080 Solenn for Pure Ocean (FRA), racing double handed and which passed Seb Ripard’s J/99 Calypso (MLT) at Favignana. Calypso is now third on the water and in ranking. The smallest boats in the race are finally into good wind north of Sicily and making progress towards Favignana where spirits will be raised as they finally turn their bows south towards the finish.

  IRC Double Handed With the retirement of Red Ruby today, Solenn for Pure Ocean now leads IRC Double-Handed standings. Beppe Bisotto’s Fast 42 Atame (ITA) is ranked second and locked in battle with Marco Paolucci’s Comet 45R Libertine (ITA) in third, 2nm apart.

IRC 6 – STILL NORTH OF SICILY Massimo Juris’ JPK 1080 Colombre (ITA) leads on the water and after IRC time correction according to the tracker. Colombre is sailing downwind to Pantelleria in light and variable winds. The chasing pack are closing the gap and seem to be in better breeze. Colombre’s nearest rival is now Ludovic Gérard’s JPK 1080 Solenn for Pure Ocean (FRA), racing double handed and which passed Seb Ripard’s J/99 Calypso (MLT) at Favignana. Calypso is now third on the water and in ranking. The smallest boats in the race are finally into good wind north of Sicily and making progress towards Favignana where spirits will be raised as they finally turn their bows south towards the finish.

IRC Double Handed With the retirement of Red Ruby today, Solenn for Pure Ocean now leads IRC Double-Handed standings. Beppe Bisotto’s Fast 42 Atame (ITA) is ranked second and locked in battle with Marco Paolucci’s Comet 45R Libertine (ITA) in third, 2nm apart. How to follow
