Get a Yacht Job in the Caribbean and Bahama Islands

Yacht jobs in the Caribbean have a lot of variety on offer. There many types of vessels sailing this area, and quite understandably so – it is right up there as one of our top 10 picture-perfect places to work. The islands are home to vibrant and healthy marine and coral life, making it popular for scuba diving and snorkelling. Pristine waters, beautiful beaches, tropical forests, volcanic mountains, rustic beach bars and island vibes are just a few of the jewels of the Caribbean.

The Caribbean and Bahamas are very popular for superyachts, especially during the Northern Hemisphere winter months: December – May.  Keep reading if you are interested in sailing one of the most beautiful charters in the world!

What Qualifications Do You Need?

The bare necessities to qualify for work onboard a yacht include:

  • STCW Basic Safety Training course
  • An ENG1 crew medical certificate

Due to the popularity of the Caribbean route, however, we recommend that you seek opportunities to grow your skills and experience, so that you are not a total novice when applying. Besides your Interior Crew Training Course (if you are interested in becoming a steward or stewardess), why not consider additional courses that speak to the activities available in the Caribbean and Bahamas? Think about scuba diving or taking part in a course to learn about the diverse coral and marine life. This will also give you more talking points with guests!

Where to go and When

Vessels generally tend to crew up for the Caribbean season in October and November. Most vessels will base themselves in South Florida, making Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach the most common places for crew to find work. Yachts may hire crew again before crossing to their next seasonal destination, the most popular of which is the Mediterranean in March and April. Keep this in mind, because if you impress on your Caribbean charter, you may get rehired for the Mediterranean trip!

Visa & Legal Requirements

To work on a boat cruising the Caribbean it is advisable to have both a Schengen and B1B2 visa as some of the Islands still fall under European and US dependency. It is also important to have many spare pages in your passport for a Caribbean season, as there is immigration control which requires an entry and exit stamp in your passport for every Island. Speak to us if you’d like to discuss possible courses that could benefit you . Our partner academy is fully ITY & MCA internationally accredited.

If you’d just like to get an idea whether a yacht job is really for you, consider downloading our ultimate yacht crew handbook that will give you the ins and outs of yacht crew life, with additional tips to help you get that job on a private yacht.

chief stewardess, i was first introduced to bespoke crew when i was personally called for a reference check. as we know, the industry is small, and we are all somehow connected by social interaction. checking references, especially verbal references, is of utmost importance when trying to find that “perfect fit” for your yacht. i immediately knew that the friendly, trusted voice on the end was doing their job diligently, trying to find that ‘perfect fit’ for another captain, and i respected that. we have worked closely with bespoke crew for nearly three years and have only positive feedback to contribute to their professional service. most, if not all, the crew has served on a longevity basis, all of whom fit in very well with our crew dynamic. i can highly recommend bespoke crew for your crew placement needs., aldon beukman - U.S. Couple Vanish from Yacht in the Caribbean: ‘It Looked Like a Robbery, or Something Much Worse’

Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry are presumed dead. The three fugitives believed to be connected to their case have been arrested but are not formally charged

yacht couple jobs caribbean

A catamaran captain was paddle-boarding along the St. Vincent shore when he came across a ransacked yacht with a broken, unrolled sail last month.

“It was not a very typical place to drop anchor,” Bernat Buj tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview in the latest issue, on newsstands Friday. “And that caught my attention.”

Concerned, he boarded Simplicity , calling out three times in the hope of finding someone on board.

There was “a great mess throughout the ship, and I thought it was the scene of a robbery,” Buj says. “But when I entered a cabin and saw blood, I thought it could be something much worse .”

Bernat Buj, captain of Two Oceans catamaran

He found two American passports belonging to Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry .

Kathy – a retired real estate agent who would have turned 71 on Feb. 21 – and Ralph – a 66-year-old financial advisor who worked from their yacht – had been cruising in Grenada when they suddenly stopped communicating with family on Feb. 18, according to their sons, who stayed in touch with PEOPLE throughout the search for their parents .

For more on the unfolding case of the missing American sailors in the Caribbean, subscribe now to PEOPLE , or pick up this week's issue, on newsstands Friday.

After finding the couple’s abandoned yacht – 80 miles from their last reported mooring – in Wallilabou Bay, St. Vincent, the captain reported the "unoccupied sailing vessel" to the local Coast Guard Service Feb. 21.

“The entire interior of the vessel and its decks were ransacked,” the Coast Guard’s commanding officer wrote in an internal memorandum – obtained by PEOPLE – to the country's police commissioner.

Missing from the internal correspondence was the working theory between police forces in Grenada and St. Vincent that three Grenadian inmates who had escaped their holding cell the same day the couple went missing, had allegedly hijacked their yacht and thrown them overboard en route to St. Vincent.

The three fugitives – sailor Ron Mitchell, 30, Abita Stanislaus, 25, and Trevon Robertson, 19 – who had been arrested for a violent robbery in December, were re-apprehended on St. Vincent on Feb. 21.

Royal Grenada Police Force

Video of one arrest, published by local media, includes shouts of “Gun! Gun! Gun!” and an escapee in his underwear, blood streaming down his legs as an official rounds him into the back of a pick-up truck.

An insider close to the investigation alleges to PEOPLE that at least two of the men have confessed to Ralph’s and Kathy’s murders.

The men, who were deported to Grenada on March 4, have not been officially charged in the case.  Although the couple’s bodies have not been found, they are presumed dead.

Buj says he is still holding out hope. “I wish this story could have a happy ending,” he says.

Grenada Prison Escapees Are Charged With Murder of American Couple

The couple, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada.

A catamaran with the name “Simplicity” written on its hull sits on blue water on a sunny day. It is flying the American flag.

Three men who had escaped from a prison in Grenada and were accused of hijacking an American couple’s yacht to flee have been charged with their murder, the police said on Thursday.

The couple, Ralph Hendry, 66, and Kathy Brandel, 71, went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada . They had been spending the winter cruising in the Caribbean in their catamaran called Simplicity, which was found abandoned in neighboring St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Feb. 21.

There was no indication in the latest police statement that the bodies of the couple had been recovered as of Thursday.

Trevon Robertson, 23; Atiba Stanisclaus, 25; and Ron Mitchell, 30, face two counts of “capital murder by intentionally causing the death of Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel,” the Royal Grenada Police Force said.

The authorities from police forces in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have given different ages and name spellings for the escapees.

The men were also charged with escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and two counts of kidnapping; Mr. Stanisclaus is also facing a rape charge, the police said, but no details were offered on those accusations. The three men made their first court appearance on Thursday, and are due back on March 27. The Royal Grenada Police Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The police had said in a statement released on Feb. 22 that three men who escaped from a prison in Grenada on Feb. 18 and made their way to St. Vincent using a yacht that had been docked in the St. George area of Grenada.

The prisoners were recaptured on Feb. 21, the same day that the couple’s yacht was found. At the time, the police said they were “currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process.”

At a news conference on Feb. 26 , Commissioner Don McKenzie of the Royal Grenada Police Force that “information suggests that, while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they disposed of the occupants.”

During a Feb. 26 news conference , Junior Simmons, superintendent of the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, said the joint investigation into the disappearance with Grenada police was ongoing, and he said the couple was presumed dead.

The investigation revealed that while sailing from Grenada, “the suspects committed several criminal acts including bodily harm to the couple,” he said.

The couple, who were married for 27 years, were “veteran cruisers,” according to the Salty Dawg Sailing Association , a nonprofit that brings together a community of sailors engaged in long-distance cruising on their boats. The couple were longtime members, the organization said in a statement, and “they both contributed to building the S.D.S.A.”

In a joint family statement posted on the association’s website on Feb. 27, Nick Buro, the son of Ms. Brandel, and Bryan Hendry, the son of Mr. Hendry, said that “if we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”

“Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of,” the message said. “Sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family — that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts.”

Negligent Caribbean Police Blamed in Murder of American Yachting Couple

Four Grenada police officers face charges and disciplinary action for a series of missteps that allowed three dangerous convicts to escape from jail, allegedly hijack an American couple’s yacht, and brutally murder them, according to reports.

Mr. Mitchell said that following proper police protocols would have prevented the escape of the three prisoners, who have since been recaptured and each charged with two counts of capital murder in the deaths of Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry in late February.

The Virginia couple had been sailing in the Caribbean on their yacht “Simplicity.” The vessel was found on Feb. 19 off the shores of Grand Anse Beach in Grenada, “bearing chilling evidence of a violent struggle,” their family said in a statement.

An investigation into the incident revealed that the three prisoners had been placed in a corridor with weak security features, from which they easily escaped through a window, rather than in individual holding cells with secure locking mechanisms, according to the prime minister. Internal police warnings had been issued two days before the escape that the trio was considered dangerous and a flight risk, he noted.

The prime minister said that a litany of failures, including supervisory negligence, improper shift handover, failure to heed warnings, and not following standard operating procedures, allowed the prisoners to escape, leading to the tragic deaths of Ms. Brandel and Mr. Hendry.

Escaped Convicts Charged With Murder of American Couple on Caribbean Yacht

What Happened?

Calling them “warmhearted and capable,” the SDSA stated that a cruising skipper came across the couple’s yacht, anchored and abandoned off a beach on the south coast of St. Vincent, an island in the Caribbean.

“The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, were not onboard and found evidence of apparent violence,” the SDSA stated.

“But when I entered a cabin and saw blood, I thought it could be something much worse,” Mr. Buj told the outlet.

Grenada police said in a March 7 update that the three escapees—Ron Mitchell, Trevon Robertson, and Abita Stanislaus—had been recaptured and each charged with two counts of capital murder by “intentionally causing the death” of Ms. Brandel and Mr. Hendry, whose bodies have yet to be found after the suspects presumably threw them overboard.

All three suspects have also been charged with other offenses, including robbery, kidnapping, and escaping lawful custody.

‘Unimaginable Tragedy’

“While the end of their life may have been dark, they brought light, and that light will never be extinguished from the hearts and minds of the people who knew, loved and cared so deeply about them,” Nick Buro and Bryan Hendry said in the statement.

“We are ever hopeful that justice will be served.”

Bob Osborn, SDSA president, issued a statement calling it “a very upsetting event.”

“I have spoken to the families and have offered our deepest condolences and our assistance in any way possible,” he said. “In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this.”

Paradise Beach Carriacou, . Grenadines. Caribbean

An elderly British couple found dead on a Caribbean beach is believed to have drowned after the wife tried to save her husband.

Rosaline Foster, 76, is said to have died while trying to save her 77-year-old husband, David John Foster, after he suffered a heart attack on L’Esterre Paradise Beach, Carriacou.

The retiree was found lying in the sand and pronounced dead at the scene last Saturday.

Rosaline was taken to Princess Royal Hospital for examination but died moments later.

Royal Grenada Police Force Corporal Ardell Lewis told  BBC News : ‘The basic facts seem to suggest the man may have suffered a heart attack and the lady may have gone to his assistance and she probably would have drowned.’

Detectives hope an autopsy will ‘tell us exactly what happened to them but for now, it’s an apparent drowning’, the force told Loop Caribbean .

In a statement issued on Facebook on Monday, island police said: ‘On Saturday, March 9, 2024, two bodies were found on L’Esterre Paradise Beach, Carriacou.

‘Police visited the scene and observed the body of David John Foster, 76, a retiree of the UK, lying on the sand.

‘He was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical doctor. Rosaline Foster, 77 years old, also of the UK, was taken to Princess Royal Hospital, Carriacou, where she was examined and pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

‘Police investigation continues into the matter. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.’

Their deaths come as police continue their search for the bodies of an American couple believed to have been thrown overboard after escaped convicts hijacked their yacht.

Sailors Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel were last seen on their way to a restaurant from their docked yacht, SV Simplicity, on February 18.

Police say the couple, from Virginia, went missing the same day that three Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Abita Stanislaus, 25, escaped from South St George Police Station.

All three have since been recaptured and charged with capital murder and other serious offences, police said last Thursday.

Mitchell, Stanislaus and Robertson were jointly charged with two counts of capital murder by ‘intentionally causing the death’ of the couple.

‘They were also charged for the offences of Escaping Lawful Custody, Housebreaking, Robbery, and two counts of Kidnapping. Additionally, Atiba and Stanislaus was charged with one count of rape,’ the police added.

The trio appeared at St. George’s Magistrate’s Court last Thursday and will be back in court on March 27.

Paradise Beach was voted the best Caribbean beach of 2022 and is known for its ‘crystal clear calm waters’, according to the Grenada Tourism Authority.

The 13-square-mile island of Carriacou is the second-largest in Grenada and a 20-minute flight from the main island.

Woman killed alongside husband after 'prisoners boarded yacht' was 'raped' as three suspects arrested

A woman from Virginia, who was killed with her husband by escaped prisoners who took over their yacht in the Caribbean , was reportedly attacked and raped by one of their killers, say the police.

Kathy Brandel, 71, was allegedly attacked by one of the three men charged with murdering her and her 66-year-old husband, Ralph Hendry, on their sailboat last month, according to the Royal Grenada Police Force. Ron Mitchell, Atiba Stanisclaus, and Trevon Robertson were all charged on Thursday with two counts of murder, escaping lawful custody, breaking into a house, robbery and two counts of kidnapping, said the police.

The three men, Ron Mitchell, Atiba Stanislaus and Trevon Robertson, are said to have broken out of their prison cells on February 18th. They then allegedly hijacked a boat owned by Ralph Henry and Kathy Brandel.

It's thought that the couple were thrown overboard as the suspects sailed to St. Vincent, where they were caught on February 21st. The trio appeared in court last Thursday and will stay in Richmond Hill prison until their next hearing in late March.

Grenada's top cop, Don McKenzie, confirmed that the three men were sent back from St. Vincent on Monday. He said: "Information suggests that while traveling between Grenada and St Vincent, they disposed of the occupants."

The Salty Dawg Sailing Association, a charity, identified the owners as Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel. They said the couple were experienced sailors and had been members for a long time, describing them as "warmhearted and capable."

The association shared that a cruising skipper had reached out about a member's yacht, Simplicity, which was found "anchored and abandoned" off a beach on the island of St. Vincent.

"The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners ... were not onboard and found evidence of apparent violence," the association revealed in a statement.

The association mentioned that Hendry and Brandel had sailed the yacht in last year's Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and were spending the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.

"This is a very upsetting event and details are still unconfirmed by the authorities, but this does appear to be a tragic event," expressed Bob Osborn, the association's president. "In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this."

Hendry's son Bryan and Brandel's son Nick Buro paid tribute to their parents after news confirmed the pair were tragically found dead.

In a statement, they said: "Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of, sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family that's who Ralph and Kathy were and that's how they will be remembered in our hearts."
