What to Wear to a Yacht Wedding? [yacht club wedding attire]

Dressing for a yacht wedding can be both fun and challenging at the same time. On one hand, you have the opportunity to wear something unique and on the other hand, there are some definite do’s and don’ts when it comes to dressing for a yacht wedding. In this post, we’ll take a look at what to wear on land and what to bring with you when you’re cruising on the high seas!

Yacht Club Wedding Attire

Consider the time of year, weather, and location.

When choosing what to wear to a yacht wedding, it’s important to consider the time of year, weather, and location. If the wedding is taking place in the summertime, you can wear lighter fabrics like cotton or linen. However, if the wedding is taking place in the fall or winter, you’ll want to opt for something a little warmer like wool or cashmere.

The weather will play a part in determining what you’ll wear to the wedding too. It can get very hot outside during the summer months, so something breezy would be appropriate. However, if it’s during the wintertime and there’s snow on the ground, opt for something heavy like down instead.

The location of the wedding is also important to consider. If the yacht is docked in a busy city, you’ll want to dress accordingly. However, if the yacht is sailing in open water, you can dress more casually.

Accessories

When it comes to accessories, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. First, you’ll want to avoid wearing accessories that are too casual. This look will clash with the occasion’s dress code, so save your beach cover-up for another day.

Instead, opt for necklaces and earrings that are suitable for formal occasions. You can also wear bracelets if there aren’t any stipulations regarding visible body jewelry.

As for shoes, you’ll want to choose something dressy and elegant. If the wedding is taking place on land, you can wear heels. However, if the wedding is taking place on a yacht, it might be better to wear flats so you don’t have to worry about slipping and falling.

Choose a color scheme that matches your personality

When it comes to choosing a color scheme, you’ll want to think about your personality. If you’re the type of person who loves to stand out, you can choose a bold color like red or green. However, if you prefer to stick to neutrals, black, white , and gray are always safe choices.

No matter what color you choose to wear, you’ll want to make sure your outfit coordinates with the rest of the bridal party. If there’s a theme, try wearing colors that match it. For example, if the wedding has a nautical theme, blue and white would be appropriate.

Dress for comfort - this is a long day!

A yacht wedding can be a lot of fun, but it’s also a long day. You’ll want to dress for comfort, so choose something you’ll feel good in all day long. That might mean a flowy dress for women or a comfortable suit for men.

Choose a color that pops

Since you’ll be spending most of the day outside, it’s a good idea to choose a color that pops. This will make you stand out against the background of the ocean and the yachts. Bold colors like red, orange and yellow are perfect dresses for this type of wedding .

Be mindful of what you wear to avoid spills on your clothes or shoes

This seems like a really obvious tip, but the best way to keep your clothes from getting ruined is by simply dressing appropriately.

Don’t wear anything you particularly love if someone spills champagne on it, you will not be pleased! We recommend sticking to neutrals rather than going for bold colors or patterns that may easily pick up dirt or food stains. It’s the unfortunate truth that the risk of spills is high at a yacht wedding, so always dress accordingly.

But also keep in mind what you will be standing on

Wedding boats are usually on the smaller side, so they can get crowded quickly. Don’t wear heels that you can’t walk or stand in and watch where you step not only will you run the risk of falling, but for other reasons, we’ll discuss below.

Wear closed-toed shoes

You may find yourself standing on a boat deck all night long without ever getting into the water (and that’s great!), but there is always a possibility that your feet could get wet.

Plus, there’s the chance you’ll be walking on slippery surfaces or in areas where there may be a lot of seaweed both of which are easier navigated with closed-toe shoes.

If you’re not into the idea of wearing anything other than your favorite pair of sandals, then go for it but you might want to bring a backup pair of shoes (and socks!) just in case.

What is the rule of 4 in fashion? ›

Kelly shared her Rule of Four lesson publicly when signups were open for the May course, so some of you may have seen it. The goal is to have at least four accessories or points of interest to every outfit .

Also known as “full evening dress”, white tie attire is considered the most formal of all dress codes. The white tie dress code indicates that guests are high-caliber, royal, or have high social standing.

Formal attire is definitely defined as a full-length gown, very fancy cocktail attire from dresses to a really glamorous pantsuit . When it comes to the men, formal wedding attire means a tuxedo. And definitely, a bow tie, which I love! The only time a tuxedo is not required is when it's black-tie optional.

Evening wear is most appropriate here. For men, this typically means a dark tuxedo, a white dress shirt, a coordinating bow tie, a cummerbund, and suspenders (optional), says Corry. Dress shoes, like oxfords, are suitable. Women can wear either a long gown or a dressy cocktail dress.

So you wanna wear pants? Totally fine! Just make sure they're dressy enough for the nuptials . Start with tailored trousers and a polished blouse, or make things easy for yourself by grabbing a matching blazer.

Being overdressed is more appropriate AND, to be honest, it will draw people to you making it easy to make new friends, allowing you to feel a little more comfortable whereas being underdressed would do the opposite. So, in general, it's a good rule of thumb!

As a general rule, " wearing black is totally acceptable , as the hue is very versatile," Sabatino affirms. However, you should avoid wearing white unless you are told otherwise. That shade, she says, is reserved exclusively for the bride.

1. FORMAL – Men: Tuxedo or Yacht Club Formal. Women: Formal Attire or Yacht Club Formal . 2. YACHT CLUB FORMAL UNIFORM - Blue blazer, Club tie, white shirt, white pants, or skirts for women, white socks for men, and white shoes must be worn at the Change of Watch, Commodore's Ball and the Anniversary Celebration.

What shoes to wear sailing? You want shoes with non-slip, non-marking soles . Most non-marking soles are made of rubber. Leather soles will generally leave marks on the deck.

What are the disadvantages of yacht? ›

  • Limited usage. Depending on where you live, a boat is only usable in warm weather. ...
  • Costly to maintain. Before you own a boat, you must make sure you have enough money to pay for a store. ...
  • Cleaning. Cleaning a boat is not as easy as it may look. ...
  • Expensive accessories.

In general, daytime weddings are more casual, so lighter fabrics, festive colors, and less-formal attire is the rule. For women, a nice daytime dress, skirt, top, or jumpsuit are good choices. For men, a well-tailored suit in a mid-to-dark neutral color like gray, blue, or charcoal is appropriate.

Glitter, Glitter, Glitter Everywhere Avoid wearing anything too shimmery or distracting . All eyes should be on the bride, and your disco-ball-looking dress may ruin her big moment to shine.

Whether you are the mother-of-the-groom, a bridesmaid, or a guest, the answer is – yes, you should wear stockings to a wedding . For the most part, weddings are formal events, and stockings are perfect for special occasions.

When choosing your clothes for the party, avoid going for dark colours, such as navy blue, dark green or black. Ideally, go for preppy, stylish or smart casual outfits so that you don't look untidy or sloppy. Brown, white, tan or blue with green, yellow and red dashes are perfect colours for summer parties.

Don't go too casual with pants. So you wanna wear pants? Totally fine ! Just make sure they're dressy enough for the nuptials. Start with tailored trousers and a polished blouse, or make things easy for yourself by grabbing a matching blazer.

It's always better to be a little overdressed rather than underdressed in my opinion. That said, being overdressed should not mean erring on the side of formal and stuffy. It's important to stay true to your personal style, regardless of the occasion!

Wedding dress colour superstitions Married in white , you will have chosen all right. Married in grey, you will go far away. Married in black, you will wish yourself back. Married in red, you'll wish yourself dead.

The Sailor's Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club

If you've been invited to a casual yacht club rendezvous, you'll need the right threads to fit in.  in this guide, we'll walk you through the yacht club attire you'll need to fit in. hint: you can find the perfect outfit head to toe with castaway.

You've been invited to a meal or event at a local yacht club, but you've never been to one before. Suddenly, the panic sets in. What should you wear? Fortunately, there are lots of options and visiting a yacht club does not mean you have to spend a lot of money just to fit in. This post will give you some pointers on yacht club attire so that you feel neither under nor overdressed, and can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club.

Before you even think about what to wear, check to see if the yacht club you're going to has a dress code posted online. Most of them do, and the rules can vary from club to club. The Nantucket Yacht Club , for example, requires semi-formal attire for its dinners and cocktail attire including ties for men during its dinner dances and balls. The Hyannis Yacht Club goes into a little more detail. It accepts stylish casual wear including clean, neat jeans and shorts for lunch. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks tend to more lax and allow casual clothing.

Sometimes, the easiest way of narrowing down what to wear is to eliminate what you should not wear. This is just a partial list of how not to show up at any kind of yacht club unless you want to be denied admittance or receive a lot of disapproving glares. All rules listed apply to the inside of the club, and can vary for beach and dock rulings.

Flip Flops or Going Barefoot: This rule applies INSIDE the club, or for any meal time. Most people love the beach, but going barefoot is not only unacceptable, but unhygienic.

You'll want to wear appropriate footwear such as sturdy sandals or closed toe shoes. While a lot of children and adults love their flip-flops, they may be a little too casual for a yacht club atmosphere. The most popular choice here is a boat shoe style but a bridle bit driver is always appropriate - check the latest . The lightly worn leather and pencil-curled laces fit the bill in the cool department.

Torn, Stained, or Worn Clothing: Any attire that is showing signs of wear such as rips, stains that never came out, holes, missing buttons, etc. should be left at home.

Baseball Caps and Other Hats: Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue. Save them for the sailing excursions.

Extra points on the water if you rock the Club’s Burgee on the hat!

Swimwear: Just a no-no. Save it for the boat and the beach. A cover-up can be acceptable for the patio.

Going Shirtless: Nope!

Undershirts as Shirts: See above. You may also want to be careful about choosing a t-shirt, particularly one with graphics, when visiting a yacht club. Most prefer that you wear a collared shirt, even if it's a casual one such as a polo shirt.

Tank tops for men and any tank tops for women that are skimpy and don't hide undergarments should be saved for another occasion.

Women have a lot of options when it comes to visiting a yacht club. Linen and cotton make the perfect summer blouses. A light but structured Sleeveless Top paired with a  sweater is perfect for warding off cool sea breezes when you're out on the deck. A polo or collared shirt works well for the yacht club scene as well. You can also consider a dressy blouse that has a little bit of flounce to it. If shorts are allowed for the time and area of the club you're visiting, consider sporting  Sailing  shorts  with a cute anchor embroidery. They're cool, classy, and show off just the right amount of leg. Casual skirts and dresses are perfectly fine as well as long as they're not too short and revealing. If you're attending a party at a yacht club you may need to wear a nice cocktail dress, or a classic Tunic Dress for a day event. Special events such as balls and dinner dances usually specify what is appropriate attire on the invitation.

Don't forget to have fun with accessories! A straw handbag can complete a nautical themed look.

For most casual yacht club occasions, men can't go wrong with a collared shirt and long pants or Cisco Shorts . Pastel and preppy shades such as summer green, hurricane red, and islander blue rule here.

When casual attire is allowed, collared sport or polo shirts are always in fashion. Seersucker and linen shirts are available in several colors and patterns for summer club get-togethers. If jeans are not allowed, seersucker or cotton canvas pants are still casual and comfortable yet dressy enough for all areas of a yacht club. If you really want to show your love of nautical dressing, consider wearing a fun Embroidered Pant !

Or you can opt for solid pants but add some nautical flair with an embroidered belt . Classic summer staples like Seersucker and Madras Patches will make you the talk of the Club, in a good way!

For those chilly sea breezes and evenings, a quarter zip pullover wards off the cool air while keeping you stylish and casual.

It's a good idea to keep a sportcoat and a few ties in your closet just in case the yacht club you're visiting requires it. Opt for a fun all over embroidered jacket, or a Madras Patchwork style to really up your game.

Kids' clothing should conform to the same yacht club rules as established for grown-up guests. If you really want your son to look cute, consider dressing him in the same matching outfit as dad.

The Ultimate Yacht Wedding Guide

Everything you need to know about planning your wedding on a yacht and more!

Congratulations!

So, you have just got engaged and now are into planning your “Big Day”. You have both decided on the romantic WEDDING ON A YACHT. For us this is easy, but for you it is full of questions that need answers. That is what we are here for. Please look through our guide below and you too will be an expert on planning a yacht wedding. Between you and Boat Miami your wedding will be perfect!

Miami and Fort Lauderdale are always more spectacular from the water. Nothing can give your event that absolute WOW factor, then putting your friends and family on a smart yacht, with dinner and cocktails on hand, to cruise the beautiful protected waters around these two cities.

There is a huge selection of locally based party yachts of all shapes and sizes, with both modern and classical designs to choose from and priced according to your budget.

The beauty of chartering a yacht for your S. Florida event is that we’ll handle everything for you: setting up appointments so that you can choose the perfect boat, write the contracts, make the booking, help you to choose the menus, arrange for on-board music (DJ or bands), additional entertainment if you need it, as well as optional extras to make your event absolutely perfect for any occasion.

If possible, try to book your party yacht in Miami or Fort Lauderdale 6 months to a year in advance. If you are planning your wedding around any Holiday Date, you may want to consider booking even sooner. Some of the most popular dates for weddings are May, June, and December. But other busy days to consider would be Easter, Labor Day, and Memorial Day weekend.

For most people they think the larger the yacht the better. Not always true. It is all in the layout of the yacht. Size matters but the distribution of the space matters more. It is really a good idea to work with a professional charter yacht salesperson like all of us in Boat Miami/American Yacht.

Here is what a good yacht charter professional/advisor will ask you before suggesting any yachts:

  • How many guests are you expecting? This number can and does fluctuate and must be taken into consideration. We have to ensure that should you end up with everyone saying Yes and maybe even adding a few more, that there is enough space in the dining salon to add extra guests.
  • Are you holding the ceremony on the yacht? We need to make sure that there is enough room to seat all your guests on ceremony chairs and that there is space for you to walk down the “aisle”
  • You will see on many web sites the number of guests that can be accommodated is listed. However, these numbers are not always based on the comfort level of the guests but on the maximum number the Coast Guard has certified the yacht for. In some cases, this leads us to suggest a larger yacht than you might think you need but we are taking into consideration the space on all levels and how your guest flow will work.

Choosing a Yacht for Your Wedding

  • Introduction

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Consultation with yacht charter agent/wedding specialist.

The initial consultation will generally take place over the phone or via email. It is the time when the wedding specialist will ask the right questions and listen to the client to determine what type of event, she/he is looking for. A list of typical questions follows this article.

Selection of Yachts

Based on the initial phone or email “conversation” yachts will be selected by the wedding specialist that best suit the bride’s requirements. Detailed proposals will be put together and sent by email for review. These will be all inclusive proposals with no hidden fees and no unexplained charges.

Private Yacht Tours

When possible, if the bride is local, or if she is coming into town, a private tour of the suggested yachts will be arranged. The wedding specialist will accompany the bride to answer any questions that may arise.

Assessing the Yachts

Make sure that all questions are answered on each and every suggested yacht. Finding other possible yachts if needed. Discuss the positive and negative aspects of each yacht as it pertains to each bride.

Securing the Yacht of choice

Once all questions have been answered and a yacht has been selected and that yacht is available on the chosen date a contract will be prepared. Once signed by the bride and the yacht or yacht’s agent the date is secured and a deposit is made to guarantee the yacht and the date.

WHY WORK WITH A BROKER?

We often get asked why work with you the broker and not direct with the boats and we always say the same thing; we offer unbiased opinions on all boats, we can offer you more than one specific yacht, and we can handle everything directly.

After our initial conversation we can assess what you are looking for and the style you are into. We quote you on a minimum of three yachts depending on your budget and from there we help guide you to what best meets your wants and needs for your wedding. Since we can offer you a variety of styles it makes it easier for you the client to be in a one stop shop. Brokers are often more reliable and answer your questions and requests promptly to ensure you have the best experience with your wedding!

Budgeting for Your Wedding

What you should splurge on, things you want.

It may seem obvious, but it needs to be said. If there are things you want, that will make your day truly yours, then go big and make it happen! That’s the most important thing to think about when reading through this section of the article. We’re talking about the things that will always seem worth the money to you. This will be different for everyone, and that’s why the advice is sometimes hard to give; but it’s something you should think about before planning anything else.

Make a list of things you truly would love to  have on your wedding day , find the average price for each, and then see what’s truly splurge-worthy. Have a dream wedding band? Then book them! Details like this will make your wedding day extra special for you and your new spouse.

Details that improve your guest’s experience

Many wedding guests attend a handful of weddings each year. The last thing you want is yours to be a dud, or unmemorable compared to others. Feel free to spend a little extra on things that will make your wedding an exciting and special event for everyone.

Here are some ideas:

  • Open bar – This is always a crowd pleaser! It allows your guests to have fun, get loose and enjoy your wedding to the fullest.
  • Yacht trip – Even if you don’t want to have your wedding on a yacht, consider  renting a yacht for a trip  on the sea the day after or before your wedding! An extra day of celebrating will have your guests eager for your wedding weekend to come.
  • Great food – Food will always be what keep your guest’s energy high! Have delicious food, all throughout the night to keep your people happy.

The videographer and photographer

You can always find a great photographer and videographer no matter your budget. However, it’s important to steer clear of artists that advertise themselves as ‘budget’ vendors. You will miss out on pertinent details like education, a second shooter (or drone), have exclusive rights to the photos and footage after, or they truly may not have the talent you desire. It would be tragic to not be able to relive the best day of your life because of sub-par video and photos.

WHAT YOU SHOULD SAVE ON

Decorations and flowers.

You can consider saving on decorations and floral arrangements if you have a more extravagant/expensive venue. Pricier venues tend to not need as many decorations brought in by you. However, if your venue needs some love buy decorations in bulk to save money. Your decorations only need to last for one day, so you can get away with buying cheaper items. Shop around for different florists’ prices, and without offending them, try to negotiate the price with a local florist. Local and small businesses are usually flexible with pricing and lovely to work with. You could always do DIY décor and use faux flowers.

The Champagne toast

If you are splurging on an open bar, then skip the champagne toast all together. Although champagne toasts give a classy touch to a wedding, they can be expensive, and some guests won’t even drink it! When it’s time for the toast, most of your guests will have a drink so encourage them to raise their glass to toast.

Wedding favors

It’s nice to thank your guests for celebrating your night with you, and you definitely should. However, there are plenty of ways to save on wedding favors. Head to Pinterest for DIY wedding favor ideas and then browse for the best price for all the items you need. If you do want to provide favors, go the least expensive route and use candy. You can purchase affordable small bags or boxes and place a few Hersey kisses or M&M’s. It is something small but also will not get wasted.

Wedding coordinator/planner

The yachts we work with have on board coordinators that we will communicate with and arrange your day of needs and timeline. When you book with us, we will work hand in hand with you and personally arrange all details with the crew, chef, and day of coordinator. It is not necessary to pay for a coordinator when we offer this service at no additional charge; also considering we work with these yachts on a daily basis we have a professional relationships with them which ensure we will have faster response times and first right to any extras they may include!

Guide to Wedding Attire

Wedding dress.

Every bride wants to feel like a princess on what is going to be one of the most amazing moments in their life, and for most that means a large poufy princess gown with a long veil and a ton of glamour.

A large princess gown would be appealing if your venue is in a church, however for a yacht you might want to consider something that is a little less extra and more along the lines of form fitted and elegant to better suite your yacht venue.

Two styles that we suggest looking at would be the Mermaid and A-line. Mermaid dresses are fitted on the body and flare out towards the bottom to give you a slight princess feel. On the other hand, the A-line style offers a fitted top with a slight flare straight down to offer some body to your gown. Majority of wedding gowns now have a lot of character, so you shouldn’t need a to add any extra jewelry besides a head piece or a necklace. Yacht weddings are elegant, but you should still be comfortable and confident, so whatever dress better suits you!

BRIDESMAIDS

Yes ladies, your bridesmaids are just as important and deserve to look amazing as well! Most days brides are picking a few options for their bridesmaids to select from, this allows them to select a style they may be comfortable wearing and depending on cost they can choose how much they are comfortable spending.

Long dresses are very elegant but knee length cocktail dresses with the right style shoe can make your bridesmaids look stunning. Consider the time of year you are getting married, are you in the dead of summer, then maybe a cocktail length dress would be better suited while in the winter months a floor length dress would be more comfortable.

GUEST ATTIRE

When it comes to the guests attire you obviously want them to be comfortable but not sweatpants comfortable. You could suggest to your guests to wear either “Semi-formal” or “Casual”. Year round in Florida you cannot go wrong with these options, just depends on the feel you are going for.

Semi-formal suggests formal darker hues for an evening, but for daytime lighter colors. Women can wear a cocktail dress or dressy skirt with a top and men should wear a suit and tie.

Casual attire suggests that anything goes besides Jeans, Shorts, and tank tops. It’s safe to say you could call it “Business casual”. Men can wear dress pants with a nice button-down shirt, Woman can wear a sundress with casual hair and makeup.

Picking the Right Wedding Cake and Menu

Wedding cake.

The styles of wedding cakes are constantly changing to match the latest trends. However, keeping it simple and sticking with a solid white cake with a slight varying pattern, and flowers provided by your florist, you can’t go wrong.

Some brides want the full extravagant wedding cakes with 5 tiers, soaked in Grand Marnier with fondant, sugar flowers, and Ombre colored. Now that is just too wild for a wedding cake that will be demolished by being cut up and it honestly does not sound appealing.

Ombre style which comes from the hair-dye fad showing shaded color gradients is still an option for some brides, but they want a more subtle difference of colors and not as mechanical as the original ombre.

Upside- down ruffles where each layer of the cake looks like a petticoat, and ‘messy buttercream’ also known as grandma style icing is common, it makes the cake look homemade.

Some brides are requesting gluten free, organic, sugar free, and vegan wedding cakes as well as shapes of hexagons, square, and octagon shaped tiers. This is your decision, but the bakers can direct you in the proper direction.

The wide variety of yachts we offer often include Wedding cakes in their packages. We can either take your cake request and work with the baker for you or you can contact them direct if you have more of a unique style.

Two fabulous bakers we recommend in the South Florida area would be Cakes by  Edda Cake Design , and  Ana Paz Cakes . They have many years of experience and create some jaw dropping cakes. Most yachts include a wedding cake with their wedding packages, and these are the two main bakers we suggest who know what the restrictions and flavor limits that are within the allowance of the yachts cake limits.

All in all, the wedding cake is a symbol of your union together and a new beginning. We are here to help guide you as well and you are more than welcome to provide your own cake from your preferred baker.

One of the most important points of a wedding is the food this is one of the things people will remember the most. The yachts we work with offer a variety of menus to choose from. You can either go the simple Buffet route or go with a Formal sit-down dinner. Buffet menus are often more cost effective and generally for larger weddings we suggest to go this route. With sit down dinners they can take longer and if you only have 5 hours on the yacht you do not want to spend majority of your time sitting at a table, you want to dance and enjoy the scenery.

Buffet menus generally range from $40.00 per person to $79.00 per person. Sit down menus are typically higher and range from $65.00 per person to $85.00 per person. Costs vary depending on the yacht and this is something we can discuss further upon booking. We can work directly with the chef and create custom menus as well. Depending on the items chosen would of course determine the cost. Below you can see a sample buffet and sit-down dinner menus that offer a cocktail reception with stationary hors d’oeuvres, dinner, sides, and salad.

Outside Catering

Often there are clients who request to have outside catering. This could be for several reasons and to name a few would be: Dietary restrictions, religious beliefs, preference of food, or unsure of the quality of food offered. You can have outside catering on these yachts but generally it is only allowed if you need it for religious beliefs. For example, Kosher catering, our yachts are not Kosher approved, so this would be the exception.

The chefs that work on these yachts have numerous years of experience and often come from high end restaurants around the country.

With having an outside caterer there is a fee that each yacht charges and they must be licensed and insured to even come aboard.

Each yacht has specific menus and pricing but majority of them can accommodate children. A children’s menu could be either half price of the standard buffet offered or a designated menu with chicken fingers and macaroni and cheese. These menus could vary from $35 to $35 per child. Children under 4 are free but those aged 5 to 12 could be on the “teen or kids” menu.

Managing Your Guests and Creating a Wedding Registry

Tips and tricks to creating a guest list, start by creating a a-list and a b-list.

It can be hard to decide who to invite and who not to invite but you have to be realistic about your figures. To help make it easy on you create two separate lists. A-list should consist of your immediate family and close friends. Those you couldn’t imagine not having there. Your B-list should be consisted of those you still really want at your wedding but may not be able to afford the extra guests. Moving forward from this you have your numbers of your A-list so send those RSVP’s first. When you start receiving declined invitations then start sending out invites to your B-list but in order of importance. For example, your best friends’ parents who are second parents to you should get priority over your friend of a friend who you went to college with.

Cutting out plus ones

You want your guests to be happy, but it is also your wedding they are attending. You do not have to extend a plus one to everyone! You may have a close friend who has been with their significant other longer than 6 months, but do you still invite them? Well, have you personally met them? Have you spent time with them and know them? If you or your fiancé have not really met them then there shouldn’t be an extended invitation sent out. Consider only giving plus ones to those close friends who are already married, engaged, or you are confident they will last. Settle on a cut off time as far as dating so when you do send out invitations no one’s feelings will be hurt. Does that mean you should invite your maid of honors new boyfriend whom they’ve only been together for 4 months, I would say no.

Say no to children

This can be a very tough decision, and one that is not made lightly. By choosing not to have children this will help to keep your guest numbers low. Depending on your venue there may even be some limitations on children attending at all. Considering your venue is on a yacht, children under 4 are free but those who are 5 and older must be accounted for in your guest total, meaning you must pay for them. You may have a child of your own that you want there and that is okay but does not mean you have to extend the invitation to your friends and family who have children. Some people will be upset and may decline your invitation but that is their decision. This just means your list will get even smaller!

Include names on response cards

The standard RSVP cards that are sent out have a line where you write your name and accept or decline the number of seats reserved. To avoid any mishaps with guests adding additional people have their names printed on the response cards prior to sending them out. This will hopefully make it impossible for anyone to force an invite you. If you do happen to have someone not understand the concept of preprinted names, then kindly call them to explain you’ve only extended the invite to 2 of you not 5.

Know your venue limits

After creating your A-list and B-list you have a general idea of your guest numbers and with this number in mind you can get a better idea of cost for your venue. No matter your budget you need to know the maximum capacity of your venue and the cost per head. For example, you have 175 guests on your list but now you know the figures from your venue and soon realize you can only afford to have 100 to 130 guests.

CHILD CARE ON YACHTS

Although children are permitted on the yachts it is not the crew’s responsibility to keep watch on the children. Of course, they will ensure the children are not in any danger, but it is up to you the client to have the proper childcare should you want your guests bringing children to enjoy themselves. The other option would be to opt for a child free wedding.

HOTEL ROOM BLOCKS

Room blocks are often a wedding standard when you have out of town guests traveling or it is a destination wedding. We typically can have the yachts docked outside of hotels but it all depends on availability. Not all of these yachts are located in the same Marina, they are located in Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami. For example, there are a few that are located in Miami near Bayside Marketplace. If you have never been to Miami this is a great place to look into blocking hotel rooms off for your guests. Or if you are in Hollywood the Diplomat Beach Resort and even the Margaritaville hotel is an amazing option.

Depending of the time of year your wedding is it would be ideal to book a room block at least 6 months to a year in advance. If you are getting married in March or April, make yourself aware of when spring break will be for schools as generally hotels in South Florida are either booked or their prices increase!

You can usually make an inquiry online through the hotel, but it may be easier to speak with someone on the phone, so they can better assist you. When you do find your preferred hotel, you want to use make sure you cover the basics first before signing the contract. Here are a few questions you should keep in mind when arranging your hotel block.

  • Is there a minimum number of rooms required?
  • What is the cutoff date to book a room?
  • How many days before and after the day of the wedding can the discount be honored?
  • Will the rooms be on the same floor or next to each other?
  • Will the guests have an online code or need to call and reserve a room?
  • Is there a deposit required?
  • What is the penalty if you cancel your room block?
  • Can you add more rooms if you need more than your original block?
  • What amenities are included?

These are just a few basic questions you should consider asking your hotel you are interested in.

1-Year and Day-of-Wedding Timeline

1-year wedding preparation checklist.

Preparing for a wedding can be very stressful. But starting them way in advance can ease the stress and allow you to enjoy the process. Below is a sample 1-Year for preparing your dream yacht wedding that can help you get started.

DAY-OF SCHEDULE

It is finally the big day! The moment you and your soon to be Husband or Wife have been waiting for! The weddings on our yachts are usually about 5 hours including the ceremony. Below we have put together a sample timeline for what you can expect on your day of. Timelines can be adjusted according to your preferences, but this is a good start!

Picking Your Officiant and Vendors

The Yachts we work with have wedding packages that often include use of a wedding officiant. They are certified and ordained in the State of Florida so yes it would be a legal wedding. However, you can provide your own officiant especially if you have specific religious preferences.

Although we are a one stop shop there are still a few vendors that need to be booked that are not typically included in your proposal. We can work with these vendors directly for you, so you do not have to lift a finger. However, if you are more of the hands-on bride, we can give you our suggestions and you can pick your own based on your preferences.

DJ & Live bands

All yachts have their own preferred DJ companies, this does not mean you cannot provide your own. However, when providing your own there is an outside vendor fee that varies depending on the yacht and they must have liability insurance.

The DJ’s that are used on these yachts are very highly recommended and you have the capability to speak with them to give them a list of songs you want to hear.

Live bands can be an option but as having outside DJ’s there is an outside vendor fee as well. You let us know what type of band you are interested in and we will handle everything for you!

Most yachts have standard centerpieces available to be used but if you do not want to use the basic ones available, we have suggested florists you can work with. You can either work with them directly or we can coordinate it all for you. You may need a florist regardless if you want to have flowers for your wedding arch, cake flowers, or random décor and especially if you do not want to handle your own décor.

Photographers/Videographers

This is a vendor we do not like to handle only because a photographer is based on your own preference. Choosing a photographer is also a fun experience, now if you do need some guidance, we do have a few we can suggest to you that have done previous work on these yachts. If you want us to coordinate timing with them, we can speak with them and arrange this if you are not comfortable doing so. Videographers are also common for weddings now; most photographers have in house videographers you can use. Cost is determined on how many hours you need them for, this is something we can also coordinate directly with them if you do not want to handle this.

Planning Décor and Party Rentals

While most of the standard items are included on the yacht Décor is not usually one of them. Most yachts do have standard centerpieces they include but as far as the little customized decorations these are not included. The yachts are all modernized so when you do a site visit you may decide you do not need to many decorations. We have created a checklist for miscellaneous ceremony and reception décor you may want to add on.

Ceremony Décor

  • Welcome Sign
  • Aisle Runner
  • Ceremony Arch
  • Aisle Decorations
  • Order of Service Display

Dinner Table Décor

  • Centerpieces
  • Table Numbers
  • Seating Chart or Escort Cards
  • Chargers (can be rented through one of our vendors)
  • Sweetheart Table Decor

Reception Décor

  • Wedding Favor Display (depending on what you are gifting these can be placed at each table)
  • Photo Booth and Props
  • Cake Topper
  • Quote Signs
  • Personal Photos or Memories

PARTY RENTALS

We try to stay away from party rentals as much as possible unless it is for rented linen colors. All yachts come with standard items that are included so you do not need to worry about supplying the basics; Chairs, tables, linens, napkins, silverware, glasses, etc.

There have been times where a bride wants to have different chairs for the reception or rented linens and we have made this happen. We only use a few trusted party rental vendors who we can arrange these details with and have them deliver these items directly to the yacht!

Marriage License and Name Change Checklist

Marriage license.

To make your wedding official you must have a marriage license that is signed by a witness and notarized. Couples wishing to be married in the state of Florida must obtain a license. Those visiting from out of state and getting married here can get a license the same day of the wedding. If you are a Florida resident there is a 3-day waiting period unless you have taken premarital counseling. Once you have the license you have up to 60 days to get married. A marriage license can be obtained from any count in Florida and may be used to be married in any county within Florida.

NAME CHANGE CHECKLIST

After getting married one of the first things that should be done after your honeymoon should be changing your last name. The moment you have been waiting for since you got engaged! We have listed a few key must do’s that require immediate name change.

  • Social Security Administration
  • Department of Motor Vehicles
  • United States Postal Service
  • Bank Accounts
  • Work (W-2 & W-4)
  • Doctors' Offices
  • Social Media
  • Memberships
  • Subscriptions

You may find a few more items that need to be changed but these should be at the top of your list!

PROUD TO OFFER SAME SEX WEDDINGS

We at Boat Miami are so proud to offer Same Sex Weddings. There is nothing different about planning a same sex wedding other than you have two brides or two grooms. We make it easy on you by helping you choose the best yacht for your wedding day. We love weddings and will customize and adapt to meet the needs of our clients.

Not too long ago a same-sex wedding was in a niche market but now we are ecstatic to be able to accommodate all LGBT wedding requests. Recently many gay and lesbian couples have realized that what they want in a wedding matches what heterosexual couples might want- a beautiful venue, nice flowers, tasteful food, and wanting their families involved.

Same-sex couples don’t want to seek someone out who just serves gay clients, most often these planners haven’t planned many gay weddings and they do not know how to really react.

We want to help you create the wedding of your dreams on the water!

Now most wedding websites offer products and services including gay and straight couples and this is especially true on the boats. A boat or a yacht wedding is perfect for same sex couples and has been the “norm” for quite some time.

Yacht Wedding FAQs

With every wedding venue there are always Frequently asked questions we get. Now some of these have been covered already in this guide but we have provided a list of the most frequently asked questions we get on a daily basis.

Will I Get Sea Sick?

Our choice of yachts are all Coast Guard Certified and are “purpose built” to be stable for events. These yachts only cruise on the protected waters of The Intra Coastal and Biscayne Bay. The water is shallow and protected all the time.

Are the Boats Child Friendly?

Yes, the boats are child friendly, but the crew are not baby sitters. It is the parent’s responsibility to make sure their child is supervised. On all the yachts we can hire a babysitter or add an extra crew member to leave the parents free to enjoy the event for additional costs.

Is There Enough Time?

The average charter length is 4 hours with 3 hours being the minimum. In all cases we can add extra time by the hour if requested. For example, we have found that 5 hours is the better choice for a wedding with ceremony while corporate events can be done easily in 3 – 4 hours.

How much time before an event can we set up?

Amount of time will be determined on the day of the event but there is always enough time allocated. Generally, for weddings we can arrange up to 2 hours if need be.

What is the quality of the food?

Each of the yachts that we work with have a qualified Chef on board and all foods with the exception of breads and pastries are cooked on board. All the yachts we use have a first-class galleys (kitchen).

Can we use an outside caterer?

All the yachts that we suggest have a qualified Chef and do not encourage outside catering unless there is a religious reason and the Chef cannot comply. In all cases where it is allowed there is a fee added to cover loss of food revenue. But it is possible.

What about outside vendors like DJ or Live Bands?

Yes, these vendors can be used. Each yacht requires an outside vendor fee for use of your own Entertainment. In all cases the vendor must carry Liability Insurance.

Is the Boat Spacious Enough?

We will only suggest yachts that have enough seating in the dining salon for all guests. In the event that you are having a more casual event we will suggest yachts with enough decks and outdoor space for your size of group.

Is the Boat Handicap Friendly?

Some yachts do have an elevator between decks that can be used for handicapped guests and elderly guests. In some cases, the crew can assist in getting handicapped guests on and off boats. Each situation will be analyzed for the correct procedure and to determine if this will work.

What if Someone Needs to Leave the Boat?

This situation depends on the reason. If there is an emergency of any kind the yacht can be boarded by medical personnel brought out and guests can be removed if needed. If it is just a case of someone wanting to leave because they “have had enough” then that is not possible. Once the boat leaves the dock your guests remain onboard until the boat returns to the dock.

What if it rains?

All yachts operate in rain. All the yachts we suggest for your event will have ample space inside if the weather does not cooperate. Rain will not stop a charter unless however there is a named storm.

What if there is Mechanical Breakdown?

Very unlikely to happen as all the yachts we suggest are maintained regularly and undergo Coast Guard certification ever year. But to be sure all yachts cruise with an Engineer onboard.

Can you do Reception Only on the Yachts?

Yes. All pricing is the same except there is no ceremony set up fee.

Is there a Rehearsal?

Plan for the Unexpected

To make your wedding exceptional and unforgettable, why not embark on a yacht-themed celebration? Opting for a yacht wedding allows you to embark on a stunning and opulent journey to commemorate your union and forge everlasting memories. This blog aims to ignite your imagination and offer many yacht wedding ideas, infusing your special day with unparalleled grandeur and charm. Let the allure of the open waters and the elegance of a luxury vessel serve as the backdrop for your love story, creating a celebration that will be etched in the hearts of all who attend.

The first step in planning a yacht-themed wedding is to choose the right yacht. Many types of yachts are available, ranging from small, intimate vessels to large, extravagant boats. When choosing your yacht, consider your guest list and the overall style and vibe you want to create. For example, do you want a small, intimate wedding or a large and lavish affair? Do you want a classic, traditional yacht or a modern, sleek vessel? Consider these factors when selecting the perfect yacht for your wedding.

When it comes to yacht weddings, the location is everything. Therefore, selecting a location that is visually stunning and easily accessible for your guests is paramount. Some popular yacht wedding destinations include the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific.

Invitations are your guests' first glance at your yacht-themed wedding, so setting the right tone is important. Consider using nautical colors and themes, such as navy blue and white stripes, anchors, and ropes. You can also incorporate a sailboat or yacht image into your invitations to give your guests a preview of the theme.

Yacht weddings are often intimate affairs due to the limited space on board. Therefore, you must carefully consider your guest list and ensure everyone you invite can comfortably fit on the yacht. If you have a wide guest list, consider renting multiple yachts or hosting the wedding reception on land.

Regarding attire, a yacht-themed wedding offers the opportunity to be creative and fun. A flowing, lightweight dress or a shorter, more casual gown can work well for the bride. A suit or a more relaxed look, such as khakis and a navy blazer, can be appropriate for the groom. Don't forget to tell your guests the dress code so they can dress accordingly.

Decorating for a yacht-themed wedding can be a lot of fun. You can incorporate nautical touches throughout your wedding, from the ceremony to the reception. Use sea-inspired elements like seashells, starfish, and ropes in your centerpieces and floral arrangements. You can also use nautical flags or vintage life preservers to add a unique touch to your decor.

Regarding food and drinks, a yacht-themed wedding offers plenty of possibilities. You can serve classic seafood dishes like lobster or crab or create a nautical-themed cocktail menu featuring drinks like "The Captain's Martini" or "The Seafarer's Margarita." Consider incorporating sea-inspired elements like seaweed salad or sushi rolls for a unique touch.

A yacht-themed wedding provides the perfect backdrop for stunning wedding photos. Consider hiring a photographer experienced in capturing photos on the water to ensure you get the best shots. You can also incorporate props like a vintage life preserver or an anchor to add a unique touch to your photos.

Being on a yacht means you'll be exposed to the elements, so it's important to plan accordingly. Monitor the weather forecast as your wedding day approaches and prepare for possible rain or wind. It's essential to have a contingency plan in case of inclement weather, whether relocating the ceremony indoors or finding a covered area on the yacht. Additionally, consider providing guests with umbrellas or blankets to ensure their comfort if the temperature drops.

While a yacht-themed wedding can be a unique and memorable experience, keeping your guests' comfort in mind is important. Ensure enough seating and shade to keep your guests comfortable throughout the day. Also, consider providing sunscreen and insect repellent to ensure everyone stays comfortable and protected.

Hiring experienced vendors working on boats is important when planning a yacht wedding. This includes your caterer, florist, DJ, and photographer. Ensure that the team you select has prior experience working on yachts and is well-versed in the distinct intricacies and logistical demands of hosting an event on the water. This will help ensure that your wedding runs smoothly and without any hiccups.

Consider transportation and accommodation arrangements if your yacht wedding is set in a location that differs from the residences of you and your guests. It may be necessary to coordinate transportation services to and from the yacht or offer guidance on local hotels and rental homes in the area. Also, consider booking a block of rooms for your guests at a nearby hotel or resort.

Getting married on a yacht may require special permits and legal requirements, depending on the location. It is crucial to thoroughly research the legal obligations associated with having a yacht wedding in your selected destination. Collaborate closely with your wedding planner to guarantee that all essential permits and paperwork are properly completed and compliant with the requirements.

Finally, planning for the unexpected regarding a yacht-themed wedding is important. Since weather conditions can be unpredictable, it is advisable to establish contingency plans for rain or other unfavorable weather circumstances. You should also be ready for unexpected challenges when planning a wedding on the water.

With these yacht wedding ideas, you can create a luxurious and unforgettable wedding celebration on the water. A yacht wedding can cater to small and intimate gatherings and grand celebrations with a large guest list, making it a versatile choice for your special day. So set sail and say "I do" in style!

What To Wear On A Yacht featured image by the supermelon

Attending a yacht party calls for a blend of sophisticated style and relaxed elegance, capturing the essence of the nautical setting while ensuring your comfort and confidence.

Whether envisioning a glamorous sunset cocktail party, a leisurely sunbathing session, or a serene exploration of hidden coves, curating the perfect yacht ensemble becomes an art.

This guide navigates the realm of yacht fashion, offering insights and inspiration to ensure you’re impeccably dressed for every moment of your nautical experience.

From chic essentials that capture the essence of oceanic elegance to tips on selecting attire that harmonizes with both sea and sky, the following are the style essentials to elevate your yacht experience to unparalleled heights.

yacht wedding attire

Yacht settings generally adhere to a semi-formal dress code, implying that items like shorts, flip-flops, or t-shirts are best avoided. Instead, consider selecting slacks or khakis for men; sundresses, jumpsuits, or skirts are excellent choices for women.

When in doubt about your attire, it’s preferable to lean towards a more polished appearance rather than a casual one.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

When dressing for a yacht outing, opt for a nautical-inspired ensemble. Consider wearing a crisp white shirt paired with tailored shorts, boat shoes or espadrilles, and a sun hat.

This classic look combines comfort and style, suitable for both genders, while capturing the essence of a yacht setting.

Before finalizing your outfit for the boat party, there are a couple of factors to consider, with the first being the prevailing weather conditions. If the temperature is soaring, opting for lightweight and breathable fabrics is paramount.

Donning stylish swimsuits is integral to yacht party attire, accompanied by chic cover-ups and delicate, breezy dresses or shorts. By skillfully coordinating these elements, you can effortlessly master the art of yacht-worthy fashion.

yacht wedding attire

However, in the event of cooler temperatures, ensuring you’re well-insulated is imperative. Being caught unprepared amidst the vast ocean during fall or winter could prove quite uncomfortable.

Moreover, regardless of the schedule, having a sweatshirt or a light denim jacket at the ready is prudent, particularly when the night descends.

The maritime environment can turn quite chilly after sunset, especially during the colder months.

Furthermore, your outfit choice should be tailored to the specific activities planned aboard the yacht. If your plan revolves around leisurely moments on the boat’s deck, a combination of shorts and a T-shirt layered over a stylish bikini is likely suitable.

However, should water sports be part of the agenda, selecting attire that remains relatively dry and light prevents any undue discomfort caused by excess moisture.

Lastly, take into consideration the overarching ambiance of the yacht setting. For a laid-back gathering, opting for a more relaxed outfit is acceptable.

However, if the occasion leans towards a more refined tone, it’s essential to align your attire accordingly.

Midi or maxi dresses and stylish rompers and jumpsuits are excellent choices that seamlessly blend sophistication with style.

Essential attire for women at a yachting event includes cover-ups, tunics, kaftans, and dresses with a fluid, breezy quality. These pieces harmonize seamlessly with swimwear, offering both a stylish layer and a means of keeping cool and comfortable.

Opting for a maxi or lace cover-up exudes an elevated charm, while selecting a sundress cover-up or a romper lends a more relaxed aura. For everyday yacht wear, consider the practicality of linen dresses and side tie skirts, both of which effortlessly complement the maritime experience.

yacht wedding attire

No looks exudes the maritime quite like a cover-up, and these lightweight garments serve as a stylish and functional layering option when transitioning between water-based activities and lounging on the beach or on a yacht. Cover-ups are typically made from materials like chiffon, cotton, linen, or lightweight knits, which make them breathable and comfortable in warm weather. Moreover, cover-ups offer protection from the sun’s rays while maintaining an air of sophistication. The following are common cover-ups for women:

yacht wedding attire

With their loose and flowing silhouettes, tunics further amplify a great seaside look. They often feature intricate designs, embroidery, or patterns and can be made from lightweight materials like cotton, linen, or sheer fabrics.

Tunics provide coverage for the upper body while allowing air to circulate, keeping you cool. Their effortless charm pairs well with the nautical backdrop, allowing women to exude both comfort and elegance.

yacht wedding attire

Kaftans are loose-fitting, maxi-length dresses with wide sleeves, often made from flowing fabrics like chiffon, silk, or lightweight cotton. Kaftans can be quite elegant and are popular for their bohemian vibe. They offer women full coverage and the ultimate in  comfort during warm weather.

yacht wedding attire

Slay it with a sarong!

Typically made from lightweight, quick-drying materials like rayon or silk, sarongs are versatile pieces of fabric that can be wrapped around the waist like a skirt, tied as a halter dress, or used as a shawl. Sarongs are easy to pack and provide coverage while allowing flexibility in styling.

yacht wedding attire

Inspired by traditional Japanese clothing, kimonos are open-front, flowing garments that often feature vibrant prints and patterns and are made from lightweight materials.

Kimonos are distinctive, add a touch of elegance, and can be worn over swimsuits or paired with shorts and tops.

Oversized Shirts

yacht wedding attire

For a more casual approach, an oversized button-up shirt can be worn as a cover-up. It’s a versatile option that can be worn open or buttoned up, offering coverage and protection from the sun.

Play up the look with vibrant colors or intricate patterns for an engaging yacht style.

Is a cocktail dress a suitable choice for women?

For occasions leaning towards the more refined end of the spectrum, a sophisticated yacht party might very well warrant the selection of a cocktail dress, or in rarer instances, an elegant gown. The cocktail dress code, being slightly less formal than full evening wear, aligns well with such gatherings’ relaxed yet stylish atmosphere.

Ideally, the event’s formality level will be communicated beforehand, but exceptions do exist.

When the ambiance is less formal than a boat wedding, alternative options like wide-legged pants, rompers, or wrap skirts can be considered. Attire resembling what you would choose for a beach or poolside gathering would also be fitting.

An essential consideration when attending any yacht event is the choice of footwear. It’s advisable to steer clear of heels – opting for flat shoes is a safer and wiser choice to ensure a comfortable and accident-free experience.

Yacht Shoe Ideas for Women

Accessorizing.

Donning both hats and sunglasses is entirely fitting aboard a yacht, and they provide an added shield against the sun’s rays, which is undoubtedly beneficial.

Not only will you seamlessly blend in, but you’ll also be safeguarding your eyes and skin from potentially harmful UV exposure. Including sunscreen in your essentials is equally crucial to ensure comprehensive protection.

yacht wedding attire

Amongst men, the favored ensemble for yacht journeys in motion often comprises a breezy, lightweight linen shirt, offering both comfort and composure throughout the excursion. Naturally, a pair of swim shorts is indispensable, ensuring you’re perpetually prepared for impromptu dips.

Completing the ensemble, opt for casual boat shoes that complement your yacht attire seamlessly.

Stylish sunglasses are essential to the maritime look as a vital accessory, effectively shielding your eyes from the sun’s glare.

While specific occasions may necessitate more refined apparel, such as dinner parties, these suggestions primarily focus on curating a laidback, relaxed aesthetic.

yacht wedding attire

Linen button-downs stand as the preferred choice for men while onboard due to their lightweight and breathable nature.

They have long been associated with boating, ensuring a harmonious fit within a yacht environment. Light cotton options also offer similar advantages, with items like polo shirts seamlessly blending into a crowd.

Even a well-chosen t-shirt can find its place, though appropriateness should be tailored to the context. However, a slightly elevated appearance may be preferable for slightly more formal outings or celebratory gatherings.

A great pair of tailored pants are a definite option for a day or night out on a yacht. Linen pants , chinos, or loose slacks are all versatile enough for any event.

Yet, a reliable pair of shorts proves invaluable if the yacht’s purpose involves active endeavors like fishing or sailing.

These offer comfort and freedom and ensure readiness for any unforeseen water-related situations.

In the realm of yacht wear, swim shorts emerge as a particularly pertinent item, given the likelihood of aquatic escapades. Whether you find yourself plunging into the Mediterranean or relaxing a jacuzzi, shorts are a pragmatic must-have.

Be it for leisure or the potential of an emergency scenario requiring a swift swim, swim shorts serve both purposes seamlessly.

Ensuring both security and comfort, boat shoes are an indispensable inclusion for any yacht experience as they prevent unwanted slipping on the deck. Sometimes referred to as deck shoes, they closely resemble loafers but include laces for added practicality.

For more relaxed outings, some opt for flip flops, which can be suitable for casual days spent with friends.

Accessories

Wearing sunglasses aboard a yacht transcends mere fashion, assuming the role of a vital shield against the sun’s unyielding glare and potentially harmful UV rays. As you sail on a maritime journey, these shades emerge as a reliable companion, diligently safeguarding your eyes from discomfort and potential long-term harm.

Whether you’re leisurely absorbing the sun’s warmth or actively engaging in water-based thrills, sunglasses exude an undeniable air of refined elegance, effortlessly elevating your yacht ensemble.

What Is Suitable to Wear to a Yacht Party?

Crafting the perfect attire for a yacht party involves a skillful equilibrium among comfort, style, and functionality, seamlessly embracing the maritime setting.

Embracing an effortlessly chic and laid-back approach, the careful curation of your outfit can significantly enrich your voyage across the waves.

Deciding on fabrics that prioritize breathability and lightness, such as linen or cotton, ensures your ease amidst the sea breeze. In the backdrop of daytime gatherings, a palette of soft and pastel hues, including serene blues and delicate pastels, imparts an invigorating and lively ambiance.

Opting for a versatile piece like a fashionable sundress, coupled with boat shoes that perfectly balance comfort and trendiness, encapsulates the essence of casual sophistication.

As twilight descends and the festivities extend into the evening, embracing darker shades introduces an element of refinement, harmonizing with the fading sunlight.

The thoughtful inclusion of tasteful accessories, like a wide-brimmed hat for enhanced sun protection and stylish sunglasses that shield your eyes and accentuate your maritime charisma, further elevate your ensemble.

Ultimately, the crux lies in aligning your attire with the occasion’s level of formality, while never compromising on comfort, and embodying an aesthetic that mirrors the serene allure of open waters.

Final Considerations

Embracing a fusion of refinement and casual ease emerges as a simple and effective strategy when considering yacht attire. While certain occasions might warrant a subtle refinement, the extent of this shift hinges upon the unique event and the preferences of the hosts.

Give precedence to fabrics like linen and other lightweight options to optimize comfort. An indispensable element to include is a pair of boat shoes, guaranteeing stability on the deck. Additionally, ensure you don’t neglect key essentials such as swimsuits and vital sun protection gear, which notably includes sunglasses.

Yachty by Nature

Yacht rock outfits, yacht rock outfits 101.

Whether you just discovered the art of smooth or been digging smooth soft rock for a while now, the subject of Yacht Rock Outfits is on your mind. Let me just say, for those about to dock, we salute you. There is an unmistakable moment when Yacht Rock is revealed to you. For me, it happened at a fancy industry party in LA. This fab girl came up and mic dropped it so smoothly to my then 80’s band, Neon Nation , saying “you guys play any yacht rock”? Holy crap, I pretty much spit out my drink and fell to the floor wondering what I was in for.

“You walked in to the party, like you were walking onto a yacht.”

Yachty Attire

The rest is history and I’m now well into 7 years of playing keyboards in a nationally successful yacht rock band, Yachty by Nature . No doubt, I’m living that dream and it goes without saying, I’m deep in the yacht myself. With weekly yacht party after monthly yacht wedding and more, I’m becoming a Yacht Attire expert in thought and practice and already guiding the band and others in this area of fashion.

Truly, if you get the clothing right, enough people with that common goal, just add yacht music and the fun ensues. Truth be told, I’ve watched as a room full of punk rockers that committed to the groovy, eclectic yacht rock dress code transformed like you wouldn’t believe.  They turned a simple celebration with a yacht rock band into a full scale 1978 throwback LOVE FEST and the clothes were off the hook. The energy, the vibe, the clothes, the music became something so magical all its own. Build the yacht and they will sail to it.

So, next time you are having a yacht party or watching your favorite yacht rock band indulge yourself with an epic outfit that will make all it happen. It’s not just the music, the band, the vibe, the look, the energy. It’s the sum of its parts and those smooth outfits have the mighty power to transfix your situation.

The Captain’s Hat…

hefner yacht rock outfits attire clothes fashion yachty by nature

Yep, you guessed it, the fastest coronation to yacht rock royalty is the Captain’s Hat.  Buy one, make one, bedazzle one or borrow one. In fact, the sky is the limit here so let your creativity reign if you are gonna go for it.  But, just get one somehow, some way and you are on the yacht. In fact, Broner makes a very comfortable, quality, straightforward and good looking hat that fits well.  Additionally, it avoids the cheap fit and look of those basic hats on Amazon. Do yourself a favor, get a hat or dig deep in the vault and find a classic, vintage, or authentic captain’s hat online. Additionally, we’ve seen some pretty cool and unique creations out there, but for simplicity, fit, and value, Broner is the answer.  Lastly, remember what Hefner did for the captains hat!

Yacht Rock Stripes get it done…

No matter what color, stripes will be the 2nd easiest way to begin your yacht fashion transformation. Put on a red and white striped shirt (or blue or black mainly) and you’ll be sailing in no time. In fact, stripes are probably the #1 most sighted outfit at a yacht rock party. Just know that it’s only the start. When you accessorize over the stripes with a complementary pant color or scarf, ascot, belt, and obviously the captain’s hat or more, you’ve earned your captain’s bars quicker than you can say Ship Shape! Don’t forget to keep it simple, too much or conflicting stripes will sink that ship just as fast.

That 70’s look…

yacht rock outfits what a fool believes los angeles band Yacht Rock Orange County OC Premier Yacht Rock Tribute Ultimate Best Smooth yachty by nature

Gettin’ Yachty @ Costello’s in Mission Viejo

Due to the strong connection between the silly, the goofy, the fun and the yacht party, going retro will set a course for adventure. Call it the Ron Burgundy effect or just throwing back to the 1977 duds they wore on Midnight Special , this look is uber sexy and may attract the opposite sex faster than any other yacht look. In fact, you don’t have to look too far to find polyester or denim clad jean meat at many yacht rock concerts. Additionally, the fake mustache works wonders whether you go 70’s vintage or any different yachty outfit.  More importantly, get bonus points on your yacht rock outfits if you can get the feathered hair going!  Polyester, print shirts, and for the ladies, buy that disco dress and some fabulous glasses and you’re ready to yacht!

The Yacht Club, Tennis Club, Golf Club…

Think Caddyshack, Marina del Rey, golfing, the harbor, and tennis. Moreso, put a tennis sweater over that polo or even better go up the ladder and put on that navy blue blazer with an ascot and some yellow glasses. Actually, that’s the calling card for us in Yachty by Nature! Pretend that you’re christening the Flying Wasp or dropping anchor with Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack and you’ll be flying indeed. Or even better, watch Caddyshack to get in the mood for your party and let inspiration take hold…and even a few classic movie lines. In fact, if you look around the golf club or yacht club scenes, your creativity is sparked immediately.  The outfits jump right off the screen and wreak of Yacht Club greatness.  Speaking of movies, we’ve even seen a die hard Yachty arrive in the Goldie Hawn outfit from the movie Overboard. Keep your yacht rock outfits classy San Diaaaaaago!

Go Hawaiian on your Yacht Rock outfits…

yachty hawaiian shirt attire clothing clothes wear suit uniform costume

Get Nauti !

Lastly, this category is a catch all for everything nautical, yachty, and seaworthy.  Use your imagination or stick to the basics.  You can don the captain’s outfit with shoulder bars easily for the Love Boat vibe.  Or, you can just look like Charlie’s Angels coming off a yacht in 1978.  Literally any type of ocean, beach, seaside, or otherwise yachty type of clothing will do.  The scarf around the neck, the boat shorts and the Nantucket red pants and plaid shirt all qualify as supremely yachty fashion.  When in doubt, check yourself by asking, “would I wear this outfit in the summer in Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard?”  Most importantly, if the answer is yes, you are yacht rock camera ready.  In fact, let’s not forget the boat shoes, deck shoes, or Sperry Top Siders all together.

Yacht Rock Outfits Wildcard…

Never forget that there’s really no authority on this subject so you can always just go for it.  Sometimes, the more uniform, standard, and strict we get on the yacht, the more mundane we become.  Therefore, don’t be afraid to dive into the vanity t-shirt, go stripes and ascot, and generally mix it up.  There are no hard and fast rules behind the Yacht Rock outfit, just your creativity and passion for the music.  From experience, we’ll go captain’s outfit one day and crazy boat shirt the next.  Ultimately, we’ve seen it all from the stage and relish the moments when people go wild with it.  In fact, there’s probably even a yacht rock adjacent area for the Pirate Party as well.  Captain Crunch sightings aside, those parties can really bring together the nauti, yachty, knotty by nature and then some.  In the end, go for it and see what happens.  It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eyepatch.  Honestly, it’s all about the fun so get Kraken!!!

As always, let the vibe be your guide.  Thus, for your next yacht rock themed party, concert, or just a Yachty night on the town, get your ensemble going.  Whether you are new to the yacht or an old deck hand, that outfit will crank up the experience.  So, commit to making that statement with your yacht clothing or up your game and improve on the garb you already have.  As we well know, you can never have enough options to mix it up for a fun night with Yachty by Nature or some other occasion.

Happy to be your guide here.  Feel free to comment and add some great ideas on this post or on social media. #yachtrock #yachtrockoutfits #yachtybynature #yachtattire #yachtrockfashion

Thanks for giving props to Tiki Caliente! I would like to point out that the most proper Hawaiian shirt to wear to a Yacht Rock concert is one that would have been for sale between 1978 and 1983! Think to yourself, would Magnum PI or Pablo Cruise wear this? And if so, bring it on! Most Magnum PI kind of Hawaiian shirts go great with a white jacket and white shorts. Vintage late ‘70s and early ‘80’s Hawaiian shirts can be found Online in Etsy yacht rock shops, and on eBay. Not expensive, and so ”vintage smooth”. Look like a pro, and be “era appropriate”. Girls can find vintage 70’s nautical dresses on Etsy, too!

THIS is everything!!! I love it Carl!!!

Ahoy Jenny! THanks so much for the kind compliment 🙂 As you know, we’re super inspired and love switching up the outfits, attire, clothing, and costumes. Yacht Rock rules!

Awesome show this past weekend at Circa Caliente glad the rain stopped so the show could go on.

Expert tips for setting sail to tie the knot.

If you and your partner love being on the water, then hosting your wedding on a boat may be your dream scenario. This is a unique option for those who love sailing or cruising, or simply want the ultimate venue to fit a nautical theme. Not to mention, the photos of open water views with cityscapes or tropical islands in the distance are sure to be stunning. But if you’re thinking of setting sail on open waters for a wedding ceremony, reception, or both, some additional, specific planning is required.

Planning for a wedding on the water not only means working within the restraints of the specific vessel you want, but it also means taking Mother Nature and changing weather conditions into consideration. Here, we consult expert planners to learn tips, tricks, and the most important things to consider before you set sail and tie the knot.

Consider Time, Location, and Weather

Whether you’re choosing to charter a boat, planning a yacht party, or hosting a wedding reception on a cruise ship, time, location, and weather are important factors to consider. “Weather can have a huge impact on a waterfront or boating event and can change the guest experience and comforts quickly,” says Nick and Aleah Valley, owners of Valley & Company Events .

In your planning, be sure to check on where you’ll be leaving from and what the weather may look like that day. “Many coastal areas have zones where gale force winds can appear quickly and unexpectedly. Having a backup plan for wind and chilly temperatures is imperative,” adds the Valleys. “If it's too windy, some boats or yachts can't sail, which could mean your event is docked or canceled completely until conditions improve.”

Meet the Expert

Nick and Aleah Valley are the founders of Valley & Company Events , an event and wedding planning company based in Seattle, Washington.

Boat Options for Getting Married on the Water

Getting married on a boat can come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Depending on your guest list and wedding vision, one option may be better than the others. Pricing will vary greatly, depending on the size of the boat, the style, and the region where you’re booking. Yacht and charter boat weddings may only require a fee for use of the vessel, while a cruise ship wedding requires paying for the cruise , along with fees specific to your wedding.

Tips for Yacht Weddings

A wedding reception on a yacht provides the ultimate view for a great celebration! You can choose to either host your ceremony elsewhere and then board the boat, or plan for both your ceremony and reception on the water.

To find the ideal yacht for your wedding, think about guest list size first. “Keep in mind that many states have maritime regulations prohibiting the rental of yachts for events or guest counts past a certain number,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. “Contacting the local maritime office is a good place to start for suggestions on how to charter a yacht. They may have recommendations for finding a yacht unless you have your own or have a connection to one.”

Once you know that your guest list count is in line with area regulations for a yacht, it’s crucial to consider space to guest ratio as well. Are there enough restrooms to accommodate your group? Is there enough elbow room to allow for a great guest experience?

You’ll also want to check if the yacht has appropriate kitchen facilities for your culinary team to create the perfect menu for your reception, along with space for other necessary rentals.

Tips for Charter Boat Weddings

If you’re hoping to charter a boat for your wedding, keeping size in mind is crucial here, too. Be sure to choose a boat that can accommodate your guest list and your specific needs. It's also important to double-check that the boat you plan to charter will fit the aesthetic and type of reception you're hoping for.

If you’re chartering a boat, insurance will also be required. “Talk to your insurance carrier about your personal policy and what the needs are to cover the event, the boat owner, and your guests,” says Nick and Aleah Valley.

It’s also important to consider the timing when chartering a boat. “Most charter boats have a very specific timeframe for when they can depart a port or marina, whether it's based on tides, locks, or marina rules, so this can dictate your event timeline,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. They suggest building a buffer into your day-of timeline so guests arrive and board the boat at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure time. This will give guests time to get settled on the boat, and you can welcome them with happy hour drinks and snacks to kick off the celebration.

Tips for Cruise Weddings

Planning a ceremony or a wedding reception on a cruise ship means you’re on a much bigger boat. Typically, that also means there may be other guests onboard that aren’t part of your wedding. If privacy is important to you, be sure to ask the cruise ship’s planning team what your ceremony or reception space will look like, and what your options are for keeping it private.

Depending on the cruise, you may not be able to get married on open water at all. Legally, you may be required to choose to either celebrate your nuptials before the ship departs, or you can choose to say “I do” at the port of one of the cruise’s destinations. Working with the right planner will ensure you’re following the proper legal guidance for a cruise wedding or cruise wedding reception.

“Keep in mind the guest experience and the logistics of what can take place on a cruise,” suggests Nick and Aleah Valley. It’s important to check if you can have events at your leisure, or if you will have to stick to the cruise ship’s strict timeline and events.

How to Keep Guests Comfortable on the Water

While a boat wedding may be dreamy for you and your partner, especially if you’re used to being on the water, it may be tricky for some of your guests.

“ Seasickness can happen quickly, especially when guests are drinking,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. “Have a solid plan, and if you have an opportunity, pass out seasickness patches to your guests the day before your event so they can be prepared for being on the boat.”

Consider putting together welcome bags that might include bug spray, water bottles, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Another helpful option? Put out a big basket of hats and fans, along with a well-stocked station of snacks and water. It’s important that guests stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion.

Questions to Ask Before Booking a Boat for Your Wedding

  • Will there be enough space for our guest list?
  • Is there air conditioning on board?
  • Is there a maintenance crew that can assist with potential mechanical issues?
  • What is the galley kitchen’s capacity for creating a meal?
  • Is there a refrigerated place to store our cake? Will it fit?
  • Can we incorporate our own décor?
  • How many life preservers are on board?
  • Is there a specific timeline we need to follow?
  • What insurance is required for use?

After ironing these questions out, you'll be ready to sail off into the sunset as a married couple!

For those who love the sea and have long desired a nautical-themed wedding, it only makes sense to hold your special day on a breathtaking yacht. The term nautical relates to ships, navigation and sailors, so it is important to include representations of this throughout your wedding’s theme and décor. If you decide to spend your magical day aboard one of our majestic yachts, know that any one of our ships can be transformed into a nautical wonderland. In case you are in midst of planning a sea-inspired event, here are some of our event planning team’s favorite nautical yacht wedding ideas :

  • Colors of the sea: No matter what theme you have chosen for your wedding, the color palette is one of the first choices that need to be made. For nautical weddings, blue and white are the most popular, typically with accent colors of yellow or red.
  • Décor: Décor is another integral part of your nautical yacht wedding, and each one of our magical yacht’s serve as the ideal blank canvas to decorate to your heart’s desire. Some décor ideas include sea-inspired details such as wooden sailboats, knots/ropes, oars, seashells, white lanterns (you can even add sand and shells inside the lanterns), anchors and even life raft rings decorated and lettered with “Just Married.” Pull your décor and color scheme into your table settings as well with appropriate dinnerware, tablecloths and chair coverings. Consider a rich navy blue table cloth, crisp white dinnerware and napkins, and delicate yellow flowers as the centerpiece. And don’t forget stripes!
  • Light-weight attire – For many people, the idea of a nautical wedding usually means the theme will be woven into the attire. This could mean more of a non-traditional type of white gown for the bride. For example, a shorter, more casual dress or something light, lacey and with an accent of blue – either a wide ribbon around the waist or shoes. For the groom, consider a light-fabric, blue and white striped seer sucker suit. Bridesmaids can wear blue and white striped maxi dresses, or be dressed in an accent color of yellow or red.
  • Reflective menu – Carry your ocean theme throughout your menu with a seafood extravaganza. At Charter One, our award-winning chefs can customize any type of menu you and your guests crave. From sushi and lobster to surf and turf, we will make sure your menu reflects your theme and delights each one of your guests.

Now that you have some great nautical-inspired wedding ideas, it is time to consider where you will host your special event. Bring your theme full circle by holding your event on a breathtaking yacht that sails along the Atlantic Ocean. Our fleet has the ideal venue for your wedding, whether you have a small, intimate guest list or are expecting hundreds of guests. Ask one of our event planners if you can learn more about or tour The Grand Floridian, our newest, most lavish ship, or The Summer Wind, a smaller, yet regal beauty. No matter what you have in mind for your upcoming nautical wedding, our experienced and trusted event planners are waiting to make it happen.

How to decide what to wear on a yacht

What activities will you be doing.

To determine what you should wear on a yacht, first think about the activities you will be doing. Will you be swimming? Snorkeling? Jet skiing? or simply relaxing on the deck? Each activity requires different clothing and accessories for comfort.

For example, you’ll want to bring a swimsuit if you are swimming or jet skiing. However, if it’s a more formal event, such as dinner and dancing, you’ll want to wear more dressier attire.

What is the weather like?

The weather is also an important factor in what to wear on a yacht. If it’s hot and sunny, shorts and t-shirt might be best. If it’s cold or raining, you may want to bring extra layers like a jacket or windbreaker that you can take off if it gets too hot.

What does the dress code say?

It’s also important to check for any dress codes that may be in place. If you’re attending a fancy event on the yacht, your attire should reflect it – don’t forget to check for any requirements, such as wearing formal attire or a specific color dress.

FAQ: What to wear on a yacht

Can you wear jeans on a yacht.

While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, it’s important to take into consideration the type of yacht you’ll be visiting and the occasion.

For casual trips aboard smaller vessels and day cruises, wearing jeans can be acceptable, depending on the context. For example, if the outing includes activities such as swimming or kayaking, a lightweight pair of jeans might be more suitable than something more formal.

What do you wear on a yacht day trip?

When it comes to dressing for a yacht day trip, comfort is key. Opt for comfortable yet stylish pieces that won’t limit your mobility. While Stiletto heels are not ideal for a day on the boat, sandals or wedges with good grip are perfect choices.

Additionally, dresses, skirts, rompers, and jumpsuits are great options to wear on a yacht day trip. You can opt for lightweight fabrics like cotton and linen or even a few pieces made of flowy fabric that won’t cling to your skin. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a pair of shorts with a flowy blouse for a relaxed but chic look.

Accessories are also important when it comes to dressing for a yacht day trip. A fun hat, sunglasses, and statement jewelry can all help make your outfit complete.

What do you wear on a yacht at night?

At night, you should aim to dress a bit more formally. Women can wear a dress or skirt with a nice blouse and some jewelry and add a blazer or cardigan if it’s chilly.

A nice pair of trousers with a top or blouse is also always appropriate. Footwear should be smart and comfortable, such as low-heeled pumps or sandals.

If you’re planning to go swimming later on, it’s best to bring a change of clothes, such as a swimming costume and cover-up. Accessorize with a clutch bag, statement necklace, or scarf for a stylish touch. Whatever you wear, be sure to feel comfortable and confident on the yacht.

What to wear on a yacht in winter?

If you’re a woman planning to spend time on a yacht in the winter, it’s important to dress appropriately for the weather. Depending on the climate where you’ll be sailing, you may need to wear several layers in order to stay warm and comfortable.

yacht wedding attire

Taking the plunge and setting sail on a yacht can be an exciting venture. Whether it’s your first time or you’re planned out many oceanic voyages, knowing what to wear is essential to feel comfortable throughout your experience.

Ensuring that your ensemble is stylish, comfortable, and weather-appropriate will have you looking incredible no matter the occasion. With a look that’s both sophisticated and fun, a well-considered outfit will cement your place as the trendiest guest at sea.

So make sure you step out of your comfort zone this summer and take advantage of these ideas to find the perfect look for your nautical adventure! What’s your favorite outfit for a day on a yacht? Let me know in the comments below!

What to Wear to a Yacht Party – Your Dress Code Guide!

yacht wedding attire

Dressing for a boat party is different than any other kind of event. While you have good times, you need to look great and most importantly, feel comfortable in your clothing. Also, you need to take some safety precautions into consideration as boats have unpredictable movements. After all, you want to have an exceptional time! Most yacht events take place in the summer, so you need to dress accordingly to the weather. What will be your event about? A Day party? A night party? In this article, you will find out exactly what to wear to a yacht party.

Table of Contents

Most parties are held during the day. You will probably spend most of your time enjoying dancing on the deck with a cocktail in your hand or swimming in the water, so you need an attire comfortable to wear and easy to pull on/off!

  • Choose a swimsuit or a bikini to wear under your clothes. Make sure to pick a color that suits your attire.
  • A flowy dress, short skirt, airy beach pants, or a short over your swimsuit will be perfect for this kind of party. You can also match them with a summary layer or a loose blouse.
  • As for the shoes, flat sandals with soft soles will get you out of trouble. High heels are an absolute no-no as they are not safe on a boat and can scratch the deck.

Accessories

  • You should be wearing sunglasses during the day, but not just any, you need polarized sunglasses to protect 100% your eyes from the UV rays of the sun
  • Try to store your stuff like sunglasses, makeup, and hair clips in a waterproof handbag. It could be useful if it gets wet!
  • Makeup Use only waterproof makeup during the day
  • Opt for a tight swimsuit if you plan to wear it under your cloth. Otherwise, there are stylish good looking swimwears that look more like dress shorts, which you can match with loose shirts and a light jacket
  • The most appropriate clothes for men are loose pants, boating shorts , and jean shorts assorted with light shirts, or polo and a loose vest.
  • Avoid flip-flops and opt for nonmarking boating shoes , like Sperry. These come in a wide variety of styles to choose from and will match any outfit. With these shoes, you can walk in complete tranquility without worrying about hurting your feet or slipping on the wet deck.
  • Opt only for a waterproof watch if you intend to wear one. You don’t want to bother taking it off, and on each time you go for a swim.
  • As mentioned for women above, the same concept applies to men. A good pair of polarized sunglasses is a must!

Night Party

In the evening, you can still wear casual clothes but a bit more dressy. The thin, soft, and flowy textile is more appropriate for night parties. Bring a light jacket with you. It gets cooler in the evening.

  • Princess waist dresses, skirt with flounces, loose pants assorted with dressy tops are the perfect choices. A chic option will be to wear a color-coordinated wrap or a jacket. A long dress harmonized with a nice pair of chandelier earrings is a great option if you opt to dress chicly
  • Here, again, avoid high heels. Flats and low-heeled sandals will be perfect and will suit any outfit.
  • Men should wear comfortable pants with a dress shirt or even a polo, and a light jacket on top.
  • I will say it again, the best shoes to wear on a boat is Sperry, but hey, this is your party, you can pick any other type of boat shoes as long as they are non-marking.
  • Girls, even if high heels elongate your legs and make you more attractive. It is preferable to avoid wearing them on a boat. Opt for boating shoes !
  • Mosquitoes love humidity, especially in the late afternoon. You should bring a repellent with you. You Never know.
  • Try to use only waterproof accessories
  • The sun beat down during the day, bring sunscreen and wear long sleeves to protect you from the sun
  • You can wear long dresses but not too long to avoid tripping.
  • If you are unsure about the type of party, ask the person that organizes the event on the yacht what is and not appropriate.
  • It’s easy to get dehydrated on a yacht because you don’t feel the sun as you are most of the time in the water or on the deck and at sea, there are always winds. PS, wear a hat and drink a lot of water!

Final Words!

Now that you know how to dress for a day and night party on a yacht, all you need to do is have a good time!

8 thoughts on “What to Wear to a Yacht Party – Your Dress Code Guide!”

I have a yacht party to go to and I really needed this guide to make sure that I will take whatever I need. It is really easy to forget a few things and later regret once you reach the party. However, in the evening yacht parties, is it okay to wear heels?

Oh, that’s great, I am sure you’ll have fun!

Yes, I agree with you, it is easy to forget things. This is why it is important to write down what you need before you go:) Once you are on the boat, you cannot go back unless you live nearby.

You cannot wear high heels on a boat, there are few reasons to this. It is not comfortable, not safety and it can damage the deck:) You wouldn’t want this happen.

Thank you for the comment and wish you to have unforgettable moments on the yacht party!

Have a wonderful day!

Hi Daniella, I really like that you divided your article into parts like what to wear in the day or in night! And that you pay attention to both men and women is great, too! often, there are only guides for women. Keep going on as active as you are! Your website is catchy!

Thank you for the kind comment, I really appreciate:) Whats women without men and whats men without women? We can’t live without each other:), Have a wonderful day!

I have been on a yacht for a dinner party sailing in heels! It was a bit troublesome especially going up and down stairs.

Is this post geared toward Northeast US or somewhere else in the world? Here in Florida, it is absolutely okay to wear flip flops to a day yacht party as long as they aren’t cheap! Sperry’s or other boat shoes are acceptable at night for men if the rest of the outfit is semi-casual.

Thank you for the comment:)

Yes, this article concerns everyone. No matter the country. Of course, you can wear flip flops , you can even go barefoot if you wish to, but the risk of hurting your feet or slipping on the deck is much higher. Most charter companies require wearing boat shoes because if something happens and someone didn’t follow the guideline, then the company or the owner of the boat will not be covered by their assurance.

However, Sperry’ shoes are the most recommended on boats as they are comfortable and stylish.

But, again, as long as it is non-marking shoes, you are good to go!

I like how you said that the most appropriate clothes for men are loose pants. My wife and I are planning to go on a trip and we have no idea what to wear. I will definitely share this article with my wife to give her ideas of what to wear in case we go to a boat party.

Hi Dereck, This would be a great idea! I am sure your wife will find something nice to wear:) Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!

What to Wear on a Yacht

Ian Fortey

When you’re on a yacht you’re obviously going to dress for the weather but, in general, you want to keep it light and cool. Casual is good within reason as long as you don’t go overboard, so to speak, and it need not be formal but it shouldn’t look inappropriate or out of place. There’s no set in stone dress code for yachts

The most expensive yachts in the world cost hundreds of millions of dollars and, for most of us, that’s a bit out of reach. But that doesn’t mean we’ll never get on a yacht for a weekend charter or even a yacht party and when that happens knowing what to wear is something you may be curious about. Let’s dig into some deeper details of suitable yacht attire for men and women so you don’t have to worry about feeling self conscious when you’re living it up on a fancy yacht.

Yacht Styles Suitable for Men

yacht wedding attire

In 80s movies you may have seen some yacht captains decked out in full formal jackets with hats and pipes and everything. You can still do that and, no word of a lie, a guy at my uncle’s yacht club used to wear the navy jacket and a captain’s hat everywhere he went for years. But most people like to keep it casual on a yacht and far less formal with a simple, casual outfit.

Linen is a popular choice for yachting because it’s very light and breezy and keeps you cool under the blazing sun. A linen shirt, like linen button downs, have a real casual but not inappropriate quality to them that has been linked to boating for years and would ensure you never look out of place.

Light cotton works just as well, of course, and something like a polo shirt wouldn’t make you stand out in a crowd, or a simple button down. Even a t-shirt wouldn’t look out of place but you’ll want to tailor that to the situation. If you’re literally just day sailing then that’s great. But if it’s a slightly more formal outing or maybe a party then you may want to keep it a little more upscale

Here’s another case where you should take the situation into account. Shorts and trunks can definitely be appropriate on a yacht but if you’re having a party in the evening then maybe consider longer pants. However, if you’re actually traveling on the yacht, especially if you’re fishing or sailing/racing, a good pair of swim shorts will do you well. Not just for the freedom and for keeping you cool but in the event of an emergency and you do end up in the water, it’s never a bad idea to be ready to swim.

Vans Boat Shoes-Zapato Del Barca

Boat shoes are a must for any boat ride. You don’t want to be skidding around on the deck in inappropriate footwear but at the same time you want to be comfortable. These are often called deck shoes as well, and they are very close to loafers with the addition of laces.

You’ll definitely see people in loafers on yachts but loafers don’t have siped soles, which means they aren’t textured to provide the proper grip on deck. If the yacht is going to be actually out there sailing and moving on the water, you want deck shoes.

Some people wear flip flops and that may be fine for a casual day with friends.

Accessories

yacht wedding attire

You should be wearing sunglasses on a boat whether or not its a yacht just because you want to keep your eyes protected from dangerous UV rays and the glare off of the water. Polarized shades are the best but anything is better than nothing. A nice pair of aviators won’t look out of place, or some Ray Bans can be great as well.

Yacht Styles for Women

yacht wedding attire

Traditionally the difference between men’s fashion and women’s fashion on a yacht has been one of practicality. In the past, men were the ones always controlling the yacht and women were passengers. Boating has a somewhat shady history of not being friendly to women, you’ll recall. And for that reason women were mostly seen wearing swimsuits and lounging on yachts. But if you’re a woman running the boat, you’ll likely want the same freedom and comfort that a man in a simple shirt and shorts is enjoying.

Now if you’re not piloting the boat and instead are just around to enjoy a yacht party, then swimsuits tend to be the order of the day and potentially some kind of wrap or cover up as well. Basically whatever feels most comfortable and appropriate to the occasion.

Things like kaftans, sundresses, and various wraps and coverups that would work poolside or at the beach when you’re not in the water are just as welcome on a yacht and won’t look out of place at all.  A knee length summer dress is something you’d likely see on any yacht.

Speedo Women’s Port Lightweight Breathable Water Shoe

Like men, you can get a good pair of women’s boat shoes that look a little more elegant if that’s what interests you, and they’re a good investment. Again, a boat shoe is less about appearance than function when the boat is actually in motion and you want something that gives you firm footing, which a boat shoe can do.

Both hats and sunglasses are more than appropriate for women on a yacht and offer the added protection from the sun that you’re going to want anyway. You won’t look out of place and you’ll be doing your eyes and skin a favor by keeping them away from harmful UV rays. Remember the sunscreen as well.

What to Wear to a Yacht Party

yacht wedding attire

Now a yacht party is a different sort of monster than just being on a yacht. This will likely be a more formal occasion and that means dressing up a little. Ditching the shorts for this is probably a good idea.

Unless you have been specifically told this is a formal wear event, black tie affair don’t dress for one. Most yacht parties aren’t that formal because, well, they’re on boats. Leaning into the boat aspect is a better option. A suit would be as formal as you should expect unless told something ultra formal like a tuxedo is expected. But most yacht parties are likely to be a little more casual than that.

Consider dress pants and a button down shirt or a blazer. A sport coat and tie, maybe with a matching jacket, is also very common for parties on yachts.

A more formal occasion, a wedding for instance, will probably clue you in as to what would be expected in terms of dress. And, hopefully, your hosts are going to be gracious enough to make it clear if you do need to dress to the nines.

You can find some more formal boat shoes and, if things get a little fancier, some dress shoes that don’t have slippery soles will work as well.

Are Cocktail Dresses Appropriate for Women?

yacht wedding attire

At the more formal end of things, a classy yacht party could very well require you to wear a cocktail dress or in rare cases even some kind of fancy gown. Cocktail attire is a little less formal than evening wear and more suited for a casual affair. Hopefully it will be made clear before you agree to show up just how formal the event is, but it’s definitely not unheard of. If it’s a party at night, and you’re going to be moored out on the water with a view of the city, for instance, a dress would be well within reason.

If things aren’t so formal as a boat wedding, then consider a wide-legged pant, a romper, a wrap skirt or really anything you’d wear to a gathering on a beach, or pool type party.

One thing you want to remember when attending any event on a yacht is to not wear heels. I’ve seen it in person and it’s a bad idea. Not that you’re guaranteed to lose your balance, but the odds are definitely leaning towards it. It’s an accident waiting to happen, so stick with flat shoes.

Are all Boat Parties the Same?

People can throw a boat party for weddings, anniversaries, charity events, retirements and probably a hundred other things. Don’t let the fact that it’s on a yacht throw you off if you’ve never attended one. A party is a party, after all.

If you’re unclear of expectations, feel free to ask. Consider bringing a sweater or light jacket just in case it gets cold and remember that good footwear is extra important on a yacht so you keep your balance. Whether it’s ultra formal or super casual, that will never change.

The Bottom Line

Classy but casual is often an easy way to approach dressing on a yacht. If it’s a party, you may need to step it up a notch, but that will really depend on the party itself and what your hosts expect. Consider linen and other very light, breathable fabrics. Remember boat shoes are the best idea to keep your grip on deck, and don’t forget swimsuits as well as sunglasses and other sun-protection gear.

Guest attire for 5PM yacht wedding

I am attending a 5pm church wedding followed by a reception at a yacht club. The wedding is at the end of August on a Friday night. Do I have to go with black or can I wear color? If black is the best choice, would it be a faux pas to wear the same dress that I wore to the groom’s brother’s wedding 3 years ago?

Rebecca Black, Etiquette By Rebecca

Dear Guest,

The little black dress is just a theme. Just wear the equivalent of the dress. It can definitely have color.

It is not a faux pas and I doubt anyone will remember a dress from 3 years ago. I don’t remember what my husband wore yesterday 🙂

Best wishes,

What Should I Wear to a Yacht Party?

The date is marked on your calendar. You’ve confirmed your RSVP. And you’ve likely spread the word that you’ll soon be attending a party on a yacht in Marina del Rey (because why wouldn’t you?).

But the question still remains…What do you wear?

At FantaSea Yachts, we often hear this from clients hosting an event aboard one of our luxury yachts. Our answer is simple – it depends on the party and the time of day. We’ve compiled a few tips to jumpstart your yacht party inspo board.

What do I wear to a daytime yacht event?

When the sun is out, it’s a great time to play on the water. We’ve planned countless celebrations – brunches, lunchtime events, and casual cruises – for different groups during the day. All guest attire tends to be similar. Breezy. Light. Think linen pants or jackets, flowing dresses, polo or oxford shirts… relaxed but stylish. This is your chance to dress differently than your normal attire; leave the jeans, t-shirts, leggings, and board shorts at home, and impress your fellow partygoers with a well-put-together outfit. It never hurts to sport a nautical-themed look (navy stripes and gold accents, included) to pay homage to the setting. Don’t think of it as gimmicky – it’s part of the fun! If you’re looking for nautical inspiration, check out this article, 12 Ultra Cute Ways to Wear Nautical-Inspired Clothes.

For daytime yacht parties, we recommend flat shoes, strappy sandals, low wedges for the ladies, and a pair of classic loafers for the gentlemen.

What do I wear to a nighttime yacht party?

Whether it’s a boat wedding , milestone bash , or company party , nighttime yacht parties are always magical. From twinkling lights to starry skies, the moment you step onto one of our rooftop sky decks prepared to be WOWED. And that in itself is more than enough reason to dress up extra special.

Nighttime parties are great for cocktail dresses and semi-formal attire. Ladies, you don’t want to wear anything too long to avoid someone stepping on your dress or your shoe getting caught on the fabric. Go for comfortable glamor. If you opt for a cocktail dress, make sure the length is appropriate. Have fun accessorizing with statement jewelry and your favorite clutch or small shoulder bag (avoid a large tote or purse for an ultra-chic look).

For men, simplicity is the name of the game. Unless the event calls for formal attire, steer away from a tuxedo. Top options include a classic suit, dress slacks with a nice blazer and tie, or dress slacks with a sports coat and tie. Not sure what the difference is between a suit jacket, blazer, and sports coat? This Jos.A.Bank article breaks it down .

Of course, if your celebration is a yacht wedding , that will bring into account a more specific set of dressing dos and don’ts. Often formal attire will be the norm, but you should always ask your friends who are hosting their wedding on a yacht to see if the ceremony and reception is formal or casual.

Similarly, if the affair is a birthday yacht rental , then check with the hosts to learn if they are planning a unique theme that would require a specific fashion statement.

What should I always take to a celebration on a  yacht?

There are two stand-out answers to this question: A light sweater or jacket (it’s always cooler on the water), and your favorite pair of sunglasses. Other considerations include sunscreen, a fashionable hat, hair ties (in case it’s too breezy), and lip balm or chapstick. People often ask if motion sickness medication is needed. Our answer is no. The great thing about our cruises is that we stay in the Marina del Rey harbor and don’t go past the breakwater. This eliminates any wave activity (there are NO waves), which makes for an easy, smooth ride. There is virtually no risk of seasickness or motion sickness cruising these calm waters.

What not to wear to a yacht party?

This may seem obvious, but high heels or stilettos are probably the least popular accessory on ANY yacht cruise – day OR night. We also recommended avoiding super casual flip-flops as the look can appear sloppy.
