Great area to sail - terrible company YIS

Chartered a boat this year. Same experience as most of the reviews here. Sardinia is an amazing place to boat. Some of complaints can be a bit unfair to YIS however the scan they run deserves no foreignness. Our boat did not have the desal they agreed in writing. Boat had constant issues and despite being new was such a cheap build that things constantly broke. Their approach to customers really upsets most people and very few seem to leave with a positive experience with YIS. The amazing area and being in holidays means most people have a good time most of the time but the YIS systems, boat quality and customer service is the worst I have seen in my life. When they disagree they lie and attack. Somehow my accurate and fair review posted recently must have been taken down so not sure how they managed that! Amazing. Stay away from YIS but go to Sardinia and charter a boat! It’s amazing. (Also still can’t get a reponse re refund as boat didn’t have the specs listed and lots broken). They just ignore you.

The problems started on the first day.

The trip didn't go according to plan right away. The boat was given away very late at 18:30. The team checked in late and everyone was on edge waiting all day for check-in. Then it turned out that the anchor winch was not working. To go to sea during the time had to wake up the team at 6 am, so that the technicians had time to repair the winch. The deck lighting did not work, it was also repaired. Upon returning back, charges were filed for damaging the anchor cover. There is no manager or office on site, no one wanted to listen to my arguments. I think that the absence of an office is very inconvenient. As a result, it causes a gap in communication. So, for example, I got a call from the main office and was told that the crew did not want to release the ship, although there was no one on the ship anymore.

My worst charter

I would like to share my experience of renting a sailing catamaran Bali 4.8 from Yachting in Sardinia. Unfortunately, this was one of the most unpleasant yacht charter experiences of my life. First of all, I was shocked by the condition of the catamaran, despite its “freshness”. The electrics on board did not work, and instead of yacht switches we found cheap household clickers. The air conditioning, installed only in the cabin, was practically useless - despite several hours of its operation, the temperature practically did not change. The toilet latches didn't work and we had more than one occasion where crew members got stuck in there. There was no generator and the desalination system was not working properly. In addition, the water, fuel and battery level indicators were disabled. The ice maker also left us without ice and despite the company's promises to fix it, nothing was done. Communication with the charter company left much to be desired. They don't have an office - just a work area outside. There are also several tables where customers are forced to wait for hours. The rental conditions are extremely strict and cruel. In words, they always say “everything is fine,” but as soon as you leave, unexpected bills with fines begin. In our case, we were fined for allegedly not collecting laundry, although we had previously been told that everything was in order. The conditions for leaving the boats are strict - at 8:00. We were ready to leave at 8, but the charter company had already started cleaning the neighboring catamarans at that time and told us, “Everything is fine, you can sit still while we clean.” And then they fined us for leaving the boat late. The bullying continued after we left: two hours after returning the boat, they called us and asked why we had not left yet, although we were already on our way to the airport. In general, I advise you to avoid renting from Yachting in Sardinia. The lack of responsibility, poor attitude towards clients and the inadequacy of the stated quality of services is simply astounding.

Avoid at all cost: We lost 1800 Euros

This year (2023) in January we booked a boat for one week in September and paid 50% of the rental fee (1800 EUR). During the month of April we unfortunately had to cancel our reservation as all our skippers (we are a sailing club with more than 400 members) found the rental conditions unacceptable: anything that may go wrong in the boat has to be paid by the skipper, even if it is the fault of the boat owner. This is confirmed by the very large number of negative reviews. Despite the large notice given in canceling our reservation, not a single euro of the 1800 deposit was refunded by “Yachting in Sardinia”, despite they have been able to rent the same boat to other customers. So we lost 1800 Euros without receiving any service.

SY Greenleaf

We had a great week on SY Greenleaf cruising through the archipelago della Maddalena. Overall the boat was in good condition. The sails were a little bit used but we enjoyed the perfect support by the technical base manager which helped us via WhatsApp anytime with any questions and concerns that occurred. The interior and the cockpit were in excellent condition. Only downside: the saltwater pump stopped working on the second day. Thank you!

Reply from Sardinia Sailing

Dear Constantine, Thank you very much for your feedback! We're very pleased to hear that you and your crew have enjoyed your week on the board of our wonderful Dufour 520 GL "Greenleaf" (https://www.yachtinginsardinia.com/it/fleet/sailing-yachts/greenleaf/). Special thanks for appreciation on our DEDICATED 24/7 SERVICE OPERATORS work to ensure safety and quality to our customers! We at Yachting in Sardinia care a lot about the ECO-SUSTAINABILITY of our boats, therefore we regret to hear about the saltwater pump problem on which we unfortunately haven't received any reports from you, otherwise we would have certainly immediately tried to fix the problem!.. Thank you one more time and we hope to see you again next year! Kind regards, Team YiS

Deposit return problem

Dear YiS team, I kindly ask you to contact me about deposit return for 4 boats rented 09-16.09.2023. Two months left. A few emails without answer from our side. It is strange and do not feet with your high standards, mentioned on your web-site

Worst Charter experience ever

The boat, a 1 year old Dufour 56, was in terrible condition, rudder and bowthruster not working, no charts of Sardinia on board, even after requesting. 1 working which handle, broken mooring lines, life jackets all 3-4 year overdue for service, outboard not working. The team at the base just couldn't care less and other crews complained about being charged for damages they didn't cause. No reaction from management after numerous complaints and unauthorised credit card charges. It was the worst charter experience ever.

Great charter - Yachting in Sardinia !

Yachting in Sardinia is a great charter company with variety of boats to choose from. The boats are very well equipped and in great condition. Our yacht Dufour 460 “Abraxan” was more than we’ve expected. Double drawer fridge, LED lighting in mess and cockpit or even a fully functional BBQ with built in sink at the stern. All tidy and very comfortable. Sails, ropes, and sailing equipment in excellent condition. I recommend this charter for all of you heading to Sardinia & Corsica.

Our 5th charter and next one in preparation

Our 5th charter wit YiS was again a very good experience, after different Dufours this time a Bali. Staff was very helpful, booking procedure was simple and straight and boat condition was very good. The Bali has a few technical deficiencies, but that is clearly an issue of the construction. We are planning our next trip already. Yes the cat was at a pier outside a marina, which we knew and enjoyed since there was a nice restaurant and a decent chill-out area.

This is an addition to our comment of…

This is an addition to our comment of july 12.After having sent a letter by our lawyer we received no reaction.Reading the negative reactions which appeared since then strengthens our impression. It seems that the answer the company sent us in the beginning is standardized and is being sent to many other complainers.

Date of experience : June 03, 2023

Dear customer, our answers contain a standardized initial text to ease the understanding of the complete picture, but as you can see from the answer that was written to you on 07/08/2023 each case is carefully examined in its singularity and I can assure you that the answer that we wrote for you is dedicated exclusively to you. We invite you at least to read it in its entirety. As for the "missed response" as you say from our legal department, we can guarantee that besides that they always and punctually respond to requests from lawyers, they're currently evaluating in accordance with the new EU directives to prosecute all customers who misuse the online reviews procedure. With the hope that this feedback will help you think about what happened, Kind regards, Yachting in Sardinia Team

intransparent and additional fees, you loose one sailing-day here

Customer satisfaction not in focus: Processes optimised for themselves. Earliest start On Saturedays from 6pm onward. Diver „service“ from 1pm onward (or pay extra!) on Friday. If you book here, you loose nearly one sailing-day. Additionally you get extra formulars to sign (500€ fee for 3rd party damage , up to150€ for calling staff etc.). These extra regulations on top of your original contract from your booking agency are uncommon. Next time I will charter where I get FairCharter standard contracts.

Date of experience : September 21, 2019

Dear Mr Ginseng, we are always open to constructive criticism. However, we must underline that our charter terms and conditions are sent much in advance to all our clients (even before we receive the 1st payment), so that everyone has the time to look into detail. Some of the points you have underlined (as some others are not true) are clearly reported in the above docs, therefore you were duly informed beforehand. Saying we are intransparent is frankly unfair. We have no interest in making you lose one sailing day, all our procedures are intended to guarantee the yacht's safety and the best yacht's conditions ever. Kind regards

Worst charter company ever - scam company

We’ve been sailing for 15 years and this is the worst charter company we’ve rented from, and by a whole lot. - AC not working : instead of acknowledging and compensating us they’ve covered up the fault with a quick fix which lasted 2 hours just enough to have us départ and stop complaining. We’ve spent the week without AC. - Rudder: brand new boat (1year old) the mechanism snapped in a passage leaving us with no control of the boat and dangerously drifting near rocks. Had to use the emergency tiler and fix the issue in a safe place - Survey: clear scam to charge us 500€ per scratch (total 3 ranging from 1 to 3 cm) including 2 never done by us and without any proofs such as pictures or survey of previous rent. - Marina: narrowest channel out and in with mooring lines in the way. YIS would not provide any support in or out which makes sense when you understand their scam of 500€ per scratch. To be avoided by all means! We rent 2 to 3 boats a year and been doing so for the past 15 years and this is the worst ever.

Dear Sebastian, Thank you for sharing your experience. At Yachting in Sardinia we always value the feedback of our customers and take seriously any concerns expressed. We regret to learn that your experience has not lived up to your expectations. That said, we would like to clarify a few details. Your reservation concerns our brand new catamaran Bali Catspace 40 "Tursiops" (https://www.yachtinginsardinia.com/fleet/catamaran-sailing-yachts/tursiops/). As for the rudder: you, as the captain of the vessel, are the main figure responsible for the safety of the crew and the integrity of our boats, which BOTH are of PRIMARY importance to us in Yachting in Sardinia. As per contract you've signed and per your responsibility as a captain, you should have immediately turned off the engine, stop the vessel, report the breakdown to the dedicated 24/7 service operator and wait for the assistance. You instead have put at serious risk both the crew and the boat. We are very surprised at your 15 years experience given all the abovementioned. As for the accident happened during the mooring, when you hire the car and the accident happens on your fault do you really pretend the car-rental company to send you the proof that the damages weren't there before?? The same is for the yachts. Please be objective and take your responsibility. Looking from our point of view we had two tachts without scraches and after the incident happened by your fault we have two yachts with scraches, which is proved by photos. Could you tell us please who would compensate the damages and the repair? As for the narrow channels and "no support", again, during all the years of our activity we have had captains with even less years of sailing experience than yours and we haven't ever received such a comment.. We can tell that if you didn't feel confident to enter the channel you could have always ask for the help of our experienced specialist for mooring assistance. We assure you that Yachting in Sardinia does not use any trick to "scam" as you say customers, but uses a CERTIFIED process that guarantees the customer reliability, safety, and quality. The only thing we ask in return to our customers are respect and seriousness so that they can enjoy a unique experience in their life and a peaceful holiday IN SAFETY. With the hope that this feedback will make you think about what happened, Best regards, Team Yachting in Sardinia.

18 weeks YIS

Coming back to YIS is always positive. The equipment of the boat is functional and very good - it improved a lot over the years. As with any growing company there are some points to improve: The new checkin procedure creates too many unnecessary repeating paperwork. We hat 4 technical problems ( boiling battery, broken switch of windlass, broken pump of WC and corroded navigation light) to fix in four weeks - such things can happen. The repeated discussion who is responsible for maintainance problems is not nice. The remote assistance and the office crew were professional, helpfull and very friendly. We will come back. Christa and Thomas

Having read the poor reviews we were…

Having read the poor reviews we were initially concerned but generally our experience with this charter company was really good. We did a week’s charter on Sultana Rosa (Sun Oddysey 440) - 4 adults and 2 dogs! The check-in process is quite unusual in that you go straight to the yacht, unpack, check off the inventory list yourself before they commence the technical briefing. Our technical assistant, Alex was very helpful as was Sylvia who kept us informed during the charter. The check out process was very efficient including a dive inspection on an anchorage outside the marina. A few tips - the marina provides assistance with mooring as quite tight manoeuvring. YIS also provide other suggestions for refuelling locations as the Marina fuelling station can get very busy. All in all a great experience with a very high quality and well maintained yacht.

Dear Mark and Eve, Thank you very much for your feedback! We are very pleased to hear that you along with Jos and Alexander and, of course, your dogs, all have enjoyed your week on the board of our wonderful Sun Oddysey 440 “Sultana Rosa”! Thank you for appreciation and we hope to see you again next year! Kind regards, Team YiS

a lot of issues with a quite new boat…

a lot of issues with quite new boat 2020, dinghy engine, anchor electrical issues and of course at the end impossible underwater damage…. this is not a right way to threat experienced sailors, very insulting, I getting lawer hired if they will charge me a dime for damages that are imaginary

As professional Skipper this company is…

As professional Skipper this company is the worst (worldwide) what I experienced ever. Like a scam car rental they accuse you of things they can not even proof, despite they track you all the time like big brother. In this case the tracking showed that there is nothing, but they still blame you and keep the deposit. Big scam! They also work with high fines (additional to deposit) when you do something - you should be aware of before, but that is freedom of contract. Another anoying thing is that you must anchor in front of the marina to wait for the diver in the early afternoon before you go back in the marina. Otherwise you pay additionally for a diver a high fee. At least they tell you that at the start. But all that is not customer friendly on top of the deposit- scam!! Never ever again!!

Amazing August '22 with YIS

Coming back to YIS august '22 was very positive. the catamaran base moved in a very more comfortable marina. The equipment of the Catamaran was functional and very good. The skipper was great and very professional, he found for us all amazing places, not forgetting safeness and plans. Thanks all the staff for professional assistance. We'll be back soon

Very good experience with YIS

Very good experience with YIS, very professional and well organized staff, plus we had the chance to get the boat earlier than planned, which was very helpful as the weather was complicated this week. Boat well equipped and in good condition. We have been really satisfied by our experience with YIS! We'll be happy to book again here! Thanks to Mauro, Veronica and all the staff

Best charter company we found in the Med

We have chartered yachts with YIS many times. The main reason why we are going back also this year is the outstanding customer service and the young age of the fleet of boats. The team manages to deliver a family style, friendly customer service with each member of the YIS team going the extra mile for us. We also rate highly the young fleet of yachts, which gives us the opportunity to sail on brand new boats in what certainly is one of the best sailing grounds in the world. We are looking forward to chartering with YIS again this summer.

Best sailing experience so far

Instead of the 1 year old boat that we booked we have received a brand new one. Very friendly people, always quick answers, attractive prices with early booking policy. It is true that you loose almost a day for check-in, inspection on Friday and check-out, but for us it was not a problem since we wanted to leave anyway one day earlier. So far this has been the best sailing experience ever.

Servizio eccellente

Ottima assistenza, check in e check out scrupolosi, barca in eccellenti condizioni.

Don't even consider getting in touch with YIS

Bagni in porto puliti.

Consigliatissimo.

Splendida vacanza in barca a vela

Sardinia Yachting Guide 2021 / 2022

Sardinia captivates with endearing eccentricities shores and its hinterland. Here drive thrill puzzles and four thousand sheep rule the roads. Sardinia has some of the most beautiful beaches not only in Italy but in the whole West Mediterranean. Yes, the sand is really white, and the sea of the bluest blue. Imagine sailing into the cluster of granite islands of La Maddalena ; or dropping anchor in Costa Smeralda bays, where supermodels and celebrities frolic in waters; playing on the coves of the Golfo di Orosei, where cliffs ensure seclusion. Whether you are walking barefoot across the dunes on the Costa Verde or lounging on the silky smooth bays of the Costa del Sud, unroll your beach towel and you will never need to leave.

Whether you go slow or fast, select country or coast, Sardinia is one of Europe’s last great island adventures. Hike through the lush interior to Tiscali’s nuraghic ruins’ twilight. Walk the coastal route that is vertiginous to the bay of Cala Luna, where climbers spider the cliffs up. Or ramble through holm oak forests to the mighty boulder-strewn canyon of Gola Su Gorropu. The sea’s allure is irresistible to windsurfers on the north shore, while sailors wax lyrical about shipwrecks off Cagliari’s coast, the Nereo Cave and Nora’s submerged Roman ruins.

Sardinia, your next sailing destination

You’re searching for a brilliant Italian break without stress and the noise of the mainland. Sardinia has some of the most seductive beaches of the Mediterranean , yet inside tootling distance of the evening ritual of the passeggiata, pubs that are agreeable, and some great restaurants.

Mention Sardinia and most people think of the Emerald Coast ‘s glitz but there’s plenty more. The Costa Smeralda is a very small strip of coast studded with resorts beaches and Beverly Hills-type stores, but if swish ain’t your thing you discover acres of swimming places to die for on each coast without the superstar pretensions.

When you have had your fill of these, there is plenty more to distract you: the magnificent rugged landscape of the granite inside, the fabulous seafood, and, for history buffs, the strange and evocative remnants of Sardinia’s ancient Nuraghic culture, not to mention a scattering of Carthaginian and Roman ruins, Pisan churches and Spanish Baroque.

When is the best period for sailing Sardinia?

There’s one golden rule: August, avoid. I know, i know, everyone has summer holidays in August but if you want to truly enjoy Sardinia, remember that August is the most crowded month of the year. That is when the whole of Italy with family sinks in tow booking all available lodging up, flooding the shores and storms the island. Prices go up too, and it can be excruciatingly hot. Nearly any other time is fine, with May/June seeing the island at its best, with the clearest skies, while a post-blitz serenity descends on the island in September, once the crowds have departed and the sea is at its warmest. The depths of winter can observe resorts looking a bit drab and forlorn, however, and some places are closed until Easter.

The top destinations for Sardinia cruise

  • Emerald Coast , North Sardinia
  • Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo
  • La Maddalena
  • Bonifacio Strait
  • Cagliari and Villasimius
  • Santa Teresa di Gallura
  • Carloforte and Sant’Antioco

If you’re a first-time sailor to Sardinia, then have a look at the northern part first, and later you can explore the south as well. Here is our proposal for a route in the north, but choose your starting point depending on where you come from.

Start off your Sardinia sailing tour from the north-west and continue to the eastern coast. Alghero is a historical city with many Catalan influences, as it was under Catalan rule for quite a while in the past. The main sights include other sacral buildings and the Alghero Cathedral , the town walls, towers, and bastions.

If you have extra time onshore, visit the nearby Palmavera together with the remains of the nuraghe — megalithic building constructions from the ancient Nuraghe age (1500 BC).

Sailing north from Alghero you come to Capo Caccia, probably best known for several caves, both under and over water, the most famous being Neptune’s Grotto. Aside from stalagmites and impressive stalactites, the cave has a saltwater lake inside.

Further north lies the small town of Stintino, with its two impressive beaches: La Pelosa and La Pelosetta. Remember that swimming is allowed on three beaches on the island and docking is illegal for private boats.

The next stop on your yacht charter vacation could be Santa Teresa di Gallura, the northernmost port of Sardinia, famous for beautiful beaches with white sand and crystal clear water. One of them is the Rena Bianca beach, just north of the town.

Not far away is the town of Palau , bordering on the Emerald Coast of Sardinia. Its main feature is little bays and secluded beaches with rocky islands scattered in the water. The archipelago was proclaimed a national park in 1994 and is among the regions in Sardinia. It has beaches with clear blue waters and an almost feel.

You cannot leave Sardinia without seeing the Costa Smeralda and seeing what all the fuss is about. Sail to Porto Cervo , its center, developed by Aga Khan in the 60s. Although it visited by other people and celebrities and is quite exclusive, it is worth a trip, at least to see large luxury yachts.

End your route in Olbia, the island’s economic center. Visit the National Archeological Museum, the Fausto Noce Park, or the Riu Mulinu nuraghe, or explore the beaches a bit.

High season, costs and deals to charter a yacht in Sardinia

The cost of your charter, as the price of docking depends on the dimension of the boat you are renting and on the period of the year. The high season period for charter and holidays in Sardinia is from May to the end of October. The weather is mild and really warm from June to August. August, as written above, is the most crowded period of the year and everything is really expensive. We usually recommend enjoying a sailing charter in Sardinia in May, June, July, September, or October, which are the mid-season months, with excellent climate and weather conditions and the area is definitively not too crowded.

The best period to confirm your booking, i mean the most convenient part of year to book your charter, sign the contract and pay the first tranche is around 8 to 10 months before. It could look like a lot of time but actually, you will take advantage of the early booking discounts that usually are from 10% to 20% off the market price, together with excellent deals about extras. Moreover, the previous you confirm your yacht charter in Sardinia , the best yachts you will still find available. As you do not have to forget that boats in Sardegna , especially catamarans are fully booked within the beginning of the new year (usually maximum in February all the catamarans for July and August are gone).

Our recommendations are: – Enjoy your sailing holiday in Sardinia from May to October, if you can avoid August; – Book your charter in advance, to get special offers as early booking and long-period terms discounts;

About Sardinia

Why is Sardinia a good sailing destination?

With its enchanting mix of crystal-clear waters, dramatic landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, Sardinia makes for an unrivaled sailing destination, and Yachting.Rent is here to help you discover why.

Sardinia’s coastline is one of the most varied and spectacular in the Mediterranean. The island is known for its stunning array of secluded coves, pristine beaches, and charming harbors. The famous Costa Smeralda, or ‘Emerald Coast’, is renowned for its turquoise waters and beautiful sandy beaches, while the archipelago of La Maddalena boasts some of the best anchorages in the region.

The island’s winds also make for exciting sailing. The mistral wind from the northwest is most common and offers a consistent breeze for great sailing, while the thermal winds in the summer make for calm and relaxing cruises. Whether you’re an experienced sailor looking for an adventurous journey or a novice seeking a tranquil sailing holiday, Sardinia’s waters cater to all.

But the delights of Sardinia are not just restricted to its waters. Step ashore and explore the island’s diverse landscapes, from rugged mountains to dense forests and tranquil lagoons. The island is also steeped in history, with numerous archaeological sites to discover, including the ancient stone towers known as nuraghi.

Sardinian culture is as captivating as its landscapes. The island boasts a unique culinary scene, featuring local specialties such as bottarga, pecorino cheese, and mirto, a berry liquor. The local festivals, or ‘sagre’, offer another glimpse into Sardinian traditions and are a must-visit.

With Yachting.Rent, exploring the charms of Sardinia has never been easier. Experience the beauty of this extraordinary island at your own pace, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Sardinia

At Yachting.Rent, we are passionate about helping you experience the thrill and beauty of sailing in Sardinia, one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Offering a stunning combination of crystal-clear waters, breathtaking landscapes, and a rich history, it is a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. The question is, should you choose a sailing boat or a catamaran for your journey?

Sailing Boats Sailing boats offer an unparalleled sense of tradition and connection with the sea. With their sleek design and powerful performance, they are perfect for those seeking an authentic, hands-on sailing experience. Sailing boats are ideal for navigating through Sardinia’s smaller bays and harbors, and offer a more exhilarating ride when the wind picks up.

Catamarans Catamarans, with their dual-hull design, provide a unique blend of space, stability, and speed. They are an excellent choice for groups and families, thanks to their roomy interiors and wide decks that are perfect for sunbathing or enjoying meals alfresco. The stability of a catamaran means less rocking, which is especially beneficial for those who are new to sailing or prone to seasickness.

At Yachting.Rent, we offer both sailing boats and catamarans in a variety of sizes and styles, all maintained to the highest standards of safety and comfort.

1. Professional Guidance : Our experienced team can help you decide between a sailing boat and a catamaran based on your group size, sailing experience, and personal preferences.

2. Wide Range of Options : From compact, agile sailing boats to spacious, luxury catamarans, we have options to suit every type of sea adventurer.

3. Qualified Crew : If you prefer, we can provide a skilled and knowledgeable crew who can handle the vessel while you relax and take in the stunning Sardinian vistas.

4. Customized Experience : We can tailor your sailing adventure to your needs, whether that means finding the best spots for swimming and snorkeling, guiding you to hidden coastal gems, or simply ensuring you have the most comfortable journey possible.

5. Safety : All our vessels are equipped with top-notch safety equipment and maintained regularly to ensure you can focus on enjoying your sailing adventure with peace of mind.

Embark on your perfect sailing adventure in Sardinia with Yachting.Rent. Contact us today to learn more and book your unforgettable journey.

Sailing in southern Sardinia: a taste of the Caribbean

  • Sailing in southern Sardinia: a taste of the Caribbean

Tired of Croatia and looking for a new challenge? — the wild and wonderful Sardinia is just for you. Let’s plan a sailing route together around southern Sardinia, setting off from Cagliari and stopping off at numerous enchanting spots along the way.

Is Sardinia actually a remnant of mythical Atlantis ? We’ll never really know, but one thing is for certain — its wild and magical atmosphere  will be an unforgettable experience that will stay with you forever. Look forward to a thousand shades of turquoise, karst caves, wild horses, flamingos and the ancient Nuraga inland!

Sailors will fall in love with the southern coast of Sardinia. More rugged and greener than the north, it offers countless beautiful sandy beaches  with a Caribbean-like vibe  and is also not so crowded in high season.

Week-long sailing route in southern Sardinia from Cagliari

So where to head? Try a leisurely and interesting route from the charming Cagliari to the most beautiful spots in southern Sardinia. You’ll get to see beautiful beaches, salt pans, islands, fishing towns and plenty of wildlife.

Route 1 — sightseeing voyage from Cagliari via Porto Zafferano, Porto Pino

Cagliari  — Pula  (14 NM) — Chia beach — Tuerredda/ Tuaredda (6 NM) — Porto Zafferano — Teulada (6 NM) — Porto Pino (10 NM) —   Sant'antioco (12 NM) — San Pietro (town Carloforte)  (15 NM) and back to Cagliari

Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy

Route 2 — alternative leg of the voyage to Capo Carbonara Park

Cagliari — Cala Regina (10 NM) — Geremeas  — Torre delle Stelle (5 NM) — Capo Carbonara  (8 NM) —  Isola dei Cavoli — Villasimius

Villasimius, Sardinia, Italy

Most interesting places en route

Cagliari and the gulf of cagliari.

  • Cagliari harbour

The labyrinth of alleyways in the charming old town will lead you up the hill to the high citadel. Don’t miss the imposing Roman amphitheatre from the 2nd century AD, where you can still see the remains of rows of seats, underground passages and animal pits.

  • Wreck of the warship Romagna in Cagliari Bay

The warship Romagna , carrying a valuable cargo of weapons and fuel hit a mine in August 1943 and split in two. Both parts of the ship sank to the shallow sandy seabed. The parts lie approximately 30 to 40 metres deep and 800 metres apart.

More experienced divers can really explore this extremely well-preserved wreck , home to giant groupers, rockfish, rays and countless small fish. It is a unique and spectacular sight to see the huge, perfectly preserved rudder and propeller.

Do not take the boat to the port of Perd'e Sali (between Cagliari and Pula) and the port of Cala Verde, which do not have enough depth for sailing boats.

YACHTING.COM TIP: Wondering where else to find great sailing in Italy? We've selected  the 15 most beautiful places to sail in Italy .

Chia and Cape Teulada

Miles of beaches stretch out to the west of the town of Chia, protected by Cape Capo Teulada. The sand forms charming white dunes and you can spot flamingos in the freshwater lagoons.

One of the most beautiful beaches in southern Sardinia is undoubtedly Cape Teulada,  which lies opposite the island of Tuareg. The snow-white sands awash with turquoise sea is enticing for swimmers and snorkellers.

Island of Sant' Antioco

A rocky island with salt pans extending northeast to the mainland opposite. There are 3 ports to anchor at here — Calasetta on the northwest tip, Sant'Antonio in the east, and Port Ponte Romano on an artificially built mainland.

When navigating in bad weather, take care at the northeast of the island and the Cape of Sperone, where there is a strong swell in the sea. Also, watch out for rocks between Capo Sperone and Vacca Island (Cow).

San Pietro Island (Isula 'e Sàntu Pèdru)

The wild volcanic island of San Pietro breathes an ancient history. It was named in honour of Saint Peter himself, who is said to have been shipwrecked here. The ancient Romans called this island the Island of the Hawks, after the birds of prey that nest here.

Use one of the numerous small coves or bays as a  pleasant daytime anchorage , depending on the direction of the wind. When manoeuvering, take care of the many small reefs and rocks that surround the island.

The cliffs on the southwest coast rise up to 40 metres high, while the east coast is sandy and low. The stunning blue sea and amazing beaches line the entire island, with beautiful hidden caves in the northwest.

  • Fishing town and harbour of Carloforte

In Carloforte, there are five marinas and harbours as well as a town  pier that's free of charge . The town centre is really beautiful. The locals are of Venetian origin and the streets leading to the main boulevard on the waterfront are lined with elegant pastel-coloured houses with wrought-iron balconies.

Carloforte is also famed for its fishing, especially traditional bluefin tuna fishing . The Giro Tonno Festival is held every year, and in the local museum ,   you can see an exhibition of this, by today's standards, rather cruel fishing method.

Laguna Molentargius (Stagno di Molentargius)

A remarkable lagoon consisting of freshwater lakes and saltwater lakes, which dry out in the extreme heat, covering them with a layer of salt. The lagoons are inhabited by hundreds of diverse bird species, the most famous and the elegant being pink flamingos .

Capo Carbonara marine reserve

Lovers of snorkelling and diving alike will be captivated by the marine reserve of Capo Carbonara . Here, you will be amazed by the beautiful sandy beaches and incredibly varied underwater life . Giunco Beach at the very south of Capo Carbonara is beautiful and also acts as a dam separating the sea from the neighbouring lagoon of flamingos.

What's the weather like in Sardinia?

The south coast of Sardinia is very windy. If you are patient and wait for more stable weather conditions, you’ll find many beautiful towns, interesting islands and countless safe anchorages.

As far as winds are concerned, the prevailing winds are northwesterly Mistral winds , but SW are also common, reaching 5 to 6 Bf in the Gulf of Cagliari and off the island of Sant' Antioco . There are also frequent storms here, but these do not usually last more than 2 or 3 hours.

For the rest of the year, the wind is mainly from the north-east and north-west, but southerly winds also occur. With strong winds from either direction, the sea is rough at Cape Sperone and Cape Carbonara .

Important things to know about a boating holiday in italy and sardinia.

  • South Sardinian cuisine  is exotic and colourful , after all, Africa is only 120 NM away. Sample delicious grilled mutton, seafood, fruit, and wonderful cow and sheep cheeses, such as Pecorino, or spaghetti with bottarga. For a successful voyage, be sure to take a really fine  Sardinian wine .
  • Sardinia is an attractive region for recreational fishermen but beware of the  ban on spearfishing with diving equipment.
  • The last week of July and the first three weeks of August are national holidays in Italy, known as ferragosto, and Italians flood the whole region. If you're looking for some peace and quiet, choose a different date.
  • In Italy , boats must not be left unattended when anchored. If you leave the boat for a long time, only do so in the harbour, marina or at a buoy.
  • Italy is one of the countries that require the captain to either have a  license  issued by the country of their citizenship or a one issued in Italy. And this is backed up by law. A marine radio  licence is not required.

How to get to Sardinia?

By air: the quickest and most comfortable way to get to Sardinia is, of course, by air.

Car-ferry combination: if for some reason you decide to go by car, you won't regret it. You will appreciate the comfort and flexibility of the journey. In addition, you can use the car to explore the beauty of Sardinia. Ferries to Sardinia depart from the ports of Genoa, Livorno, Civitavecchia and Piombino. However, the most common ferry route from the mainland to the south of Sardinia will be Naples — Cagliari. The price of the ferry depends on the day of the crossing, whether you sail day or night, if you want a cabin, the type of car you want and also the advance in which you book your ticket.

Where is the best diving in Sardinia?

If you're sailing from Cagliari on your cruise and you're carrying your diving gear, stay a while in the Gulf of Cagliari. Plus, if you're a history and WWII buff, you've found yourself in perhaps the most renowned site of its kind. Indeed, many warships and cargo ships that were pursued by British U-boats found their scrapyards here. The wrecks are usually well-preserved, at shallow depths and surrounded by colourful marine life.
