It was 1939 when Zephyr was launched. Survived the war, this iconic Feadship has seen again the light today after two-year rebuild.

[dropcap]E[/dropcap]ighty years and two months after her initial launch in May 1939, the 15-metre Feadship  Zephyr  has been relaunched after a comprehensive rebuild. Initially built by De Vries in Aalsmeer to a De Voogt design a decade before the two families joined forces with Van Lent to form Feadship,  Zephyr  was an innovative motoryacht for her day, one of the very first to have her design tank-tested. Now, in early July 2019, she is making headlines again as a textbook example of how Feadship’s maritime heritage can be restored to 21st-century standards of comfort while retaining the historic ambience of days gone by.

zephyr of london yacht

There is something captivating about the cruisers designed and built by the soon-to-be members of Feadship in the years leading up to World War II. They exude classic style in the black & white photographs from the era while the yachts which have survived down the decades make an even more imposing impression in full-colour real life. And then, raising the bar even higher, there are the motoryachts of the Feadship Heritage Fleet which have been lovingly restored to their former glory.  Zephyr  is a truly worthy new member of this fleet in every respect.

zephyr of london yacht

“A modern design”,  can be read in an article at the time  15-metre motoryachts of this size and sophistication were big news at the time of  Zephyr ‘s original build. In August 1939,  Yachting World  published a lengthy article on her “modern design” with two V8 engines. “Very rarely is it considered worthwhile to carry out a series of tank tests of a motor cruiser of less that 50ft,” the piece began. “But it is occasionally done in Holland if a high performance is required. In the case of  Zephyr  this was very carefully carried out in the tank at Wageningen and it is to the credit of the designer that the scalemodel showed practically a straight line resistance curve up to 19 knots”.

The article went on to discuss how the owner of  Zephyr  was a repeat client who had previously ordered the yacht  Nepos  from Henri De Voogt. “She had been a great success but the owner wanted something a little faster and returned to the same designer for his new boat.” It is fascinating to read how such custom requests were met and  Yachting World  wasalso very impressed with the construction work of the yard. “ Zephyr  is most beautifully built.  Nepos  was very easy on the eye but  Zephyr  is even more so.”

zephyr of london yacht

Investments in pleasure Unsurprisingly, no records exist of how  Zephyr  fared during the war years but she clearly avoided the fate of the many yachts destroyed during this dark period for the Netherlands. The owners, the Smit family, were able to make good use of their not insignificant original investment of 14,000 Dutch guilders in the 1950s and 1960s. Less is known about the yacht’s later years apart from the fact that  Zephyr  had a Greek owner for some time who added a flybridge and two stern drives.

Swiftsure Yachts

Zephyr is the result of a tremendous design, built to exacting European standards, then methodically refined over 15 years by an experienced shipwright. There is little if anything left to improve upon in this boat. For the sailor who appreciates an easily driven and timeless hull shape, heavy duty construction and meticulous attention to detail, Zephyr stands apart.

The Ohlson 38 was designed by Einer Ohlson. Many of the 38s were built or finished in Ohlson’s home country of Sweden, while others like  Zephyr were built and finished at Tyler Yachts in England. When the design was first built in the late 1960s, the imperative was still to create a relatively narrow, easily driven hull that went through the water withe ease. While the rudder and keel are separated, the keel is long enough to provide excellent tracking and directional stability.

The cockpit is secure and comfortable, with storage in lockers and a large lazarette. The side decks are wide with excellent handholds all the way forward. It’s an easy deck to move around on, particularly in a bouncing sea.

Below decks, the interior is beautifully finished, particularly where the owner has rebuilt it. The forepeak, for instance, was gutted and rebuilt and is now a luxurious owner’s cabin. The shower stall to starboard was replaced by a counter and sink. The spaces, and storage, are clearly designed to work at sea.

The original Tyler construction is impressive, with substantial stringers running along the hull sides. Combined with the vinylester solid fiberglass layup of both the hull and decks, this makes the Ohlson 38 is an amazingly strong boat. The entire deck and hull have been thoroughly insulated.

Zephyr ’s owner has had a longstanding relationship with various Ohlson designs, racing and cruising them, dating back to the wooden 35-footers. Zephyr stands as both an outstanding example of craftsmanship and a vision of what a classic design can be. There isn’t a harbor in the world where  Zephyr  wouldn’t garner attention.

Interior Accommodations

Zephy r’s interior is inviting and cozy, with traditional carpentry defining the space. Starting forward is a comfortable V-berth with a fitted, spring mattress. The head is to port and a vanity to starboard, with plenty of storage and room to move around. The main cabin features a settee to starboard and dinette to port, which can extend to accommodate guests at the dinner table or be lowered to create a double berth. Storage is accessible and abundant. The navigation station is to starboard at the base of the companionway with a quarterberth extending aft. The galley is to port.

Superyachts spotted in London

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The UK capital may not be quite as picturesque as France's sparkling shores or Italy's beach-lined coasts - but evidently, there's still a certain appeal among yacht owners as an increasing number of superyachts set a course for London.

Bravo Eugenia

Oceanco's 109-metre Bravo Eugenia has visited the Big Smoke many times, showing off a chiselled Nuvolari Lenard exterior and dazzling underwater light display. A sharp plumb bow and extended waterline make her one of the distinctive superyachts on the water, and she certainly cuts an elegant profile whenever she arrives in London. With her hybrid propulsion engine, she offers a quiet electric mode which allows her to consume 30 per cent less fuel than other motor yachts in her size class, making her one of the more eco-friendly yachts in the world . She was most recently sighted in November 2023 at Butler's Wharf Pier, Tower Bridge.

The 90-metre expedition yacht has been spotted anchored in front of Tower Bridge following delivery from Lürssen 's yard in Germany. Launched in February 2023, Norn has since travelled across the Baltic and North Sea, including a skirt around Sweden’s Skåne County and a brief stop in the port of Helsingborg on the 9 of June, according to BOATPro . Key features include an outdoor cinema and changeable-depth pool floor with dance floor illumination.

Prior to arriving in Canary Wharf, the 56-metre Benetti build enjoyed a cruising expedition in the cruising grounds from where she gets her name. Australia ’s Stefano Ricci lines and navy hull attracted plenty of attention along the Gold Coast, and the 2012 build has an equally impressive interior with three individual dining saloons. She was launched as Ulysses and later became known as Bash , and was formerly owned by two serial yacht owners.

Fresh from an Atlantic crossing that began in early May and a stop-off in Portsmouth, the 54.3-metre Amels yacht Revelry was spotted docked in Canary Wharf. The yacht has a textbook Tim Heywood exterior and interiors by Laura Sessa , as part of the Dutch yard's Limited Editions 177 series. She was launched as 4You in 2012 and changed ownership in 2021.

The 110-metre Kaos (ex- Jubilee ) is the largest yacht to pay a visit to London in recent years. She cruised up the Thames in May 2023, stopping in front of Butler's Wharf and Tower Bridge to show off her unique blue exterior penned by Lobanov Design . The multi-award-winning yacht has a stellar range of onboard amenities, including an 8.5-metre pool, aquarium and a multitude of custom-designed pieces not found on any other yacht. At the time of her last sale in 2018, she was one of the largest sales in yachting history.

The third unit in Benetti 's highly popular Oasis 40M series, named Phoenix , has spent a significant amount of time cruising the coastline of Great Britain. Since her delivery in 2021, she has paid visits to Southampton and Ireland as well as to Canary Wharf and Tower Bridge. Key features include the signature Oasis deck, which boasts a glass-fronted dipping pool and unfolding bulwarks. The design of this model was so popular it inspired a smaller 34 metre series, with Zlatan Ibrahimović buying the first unit .

The 49-metre Reef Chief was spotted docked in the heart of Canary Wharf in 2022. The yacht was delivered by American yard Trinity in 2009 and has been designed with entertainment at its core. She is crowned by a large sundeck with an exterior bar, shaded dining area and TV screen, along with a Jacuzzi. Ten guests can be accommodated in five cabins, which are styled in classic polished wood and cream tones.

The 33.7-metre Van der Valk Blue Jeans made her maiden voyage to London after departing the shipyard in the Netherlands. Her cool blue hull added a touch of brightness to a dreary London day, and she spent her time cruising up and down the river showing off her custom Guido De Groot exterior. The all-aluminium yacht is one of the builder's most complex undertakings to date and is home to a foredeck "chillout lounge" with sun pads tucked into the bow, a U-shaped sofa and a dining table that pops up from the deck.

Fresh from a comprehensive refit and extension, the 44-metre motor yacht Brazil paid a visit to the River Thames in December 2022. The yacht was spotted moored outside St Katharine Docks Marina enjoying some winter sunshine in front of Tower Bridge. She was originally delivered by Heesen in 1993 and was relaunched in October following an extensive refit courtesy of a collaboration between three Dutch firms – Snijders Yachts, Zwijnenburg and Dutchflows. Work was primarily focused around the stern area, where the yacht was given a new beach club. The yacht is listed for sale with IYC .

Slipstream was delivered in 2009 as one of two 60-metre models from French shipyard CMN , Both exterior and interior were curated by Winch Design and the British studio has given her a smart navy hull with a distinctive grey superstructure. She features generous living and entertainment areas with an outdoor cinema on the sundeck and a hand-carved 4.5-metre totem pole at the centrepiece of a feature staircase. Owned by Canadian businessman Jack Cowin, Slipstream is currently available for charter by Burgess .

Having recently completed a cross-planet navigation that included Norway, the Maldives and Australia, 62-metre Stardust was spotted cruising up the Thames and into Canary Wharf in July 2022. The Amels build was handed over to her owners in 2020, and is the first and only hull in the Dutch yard's Limited Editions 206 series. Interior design comes from Laura Sessa, while Tim Heywood is responsible for the yacht's distinctive exterior, which is characterised by long lines of circular portholes and a cut-out segment in the hull line.

The 75.6-metre Boardwalk is one of the newer deliveries from prestigious Dutch shipbuilder Feadship , and she caused a big buzz when she moored up on the Thames against the backdrop of Tower Bridge. Her aft deck helipad, generous beach club and huge TV screens were on full display to lucky onlookers who were able to catch a glimpse of her.

Delivered in 2010 from Lürssen, 60-metre Bella Vita paid a brief visit to London, where she was seen along Butler's Wharf, just in front of Tower Bridge. Launched under the name Katie Sue II , the yacht became one of the top 50 most expensive yachts for sale in the world prior to her sale in January 2021. No doubt her new owner is enjoying her Glade Johnson interior and well-equipped sundeck.

As one of the most recent deliveries from German shipyard Lürssen , 55.5-metre Moon Sand made waves when she cruised up the Thames shortly after delivery. The yacht has a number of innovative features on deck, including a recessed pool that can be drained and raised flush with the deck when not in use. The yacht's crisp profile and clean, soothing interiors are by legendary yacht design studio Bannenberg & Rowell.

With her sky-blue hull and buttercup yellow exterior accents, the Abeking & Rasmussen -built 98 metre motor Aviva added some colour to the city when she visited. The yacht is home to an onboard paddel tennis court - the first of its kind ever installed - which had to be carefully engineered in order to create the correct level of bounce.

Heesen's largest steel superyacht to date was spotted in London displaying her new name Lusine . The yacht hit the water in 2021 sporting a masculine exterior courtesy of Omega Architects and an interior by Sinot Yacht and Architecture Design . A glass elevator lies at the heart of the design while a touch-and-go helipad forward allows guests to come and go in complete privacy.

With her "champagne and caviar" interiors and two-deck video walls in the lobby, 95-metre Kismet is all about the wow factor. Her interiors are by Reymond Langton, while her exteriors are the work of Espen Øino and she features an impressive jaguar statue on the bowsprit. She marks one of the most expensive yachts for charter in the world , asking a cool €1,200,000 for one week.

The Zephyr is a fully responsive, light on the helm, single-handed boat. While the majority of the fleet are wooden construction (over 300), the move to fibre glass construction was recent.

In 2020 Mackay Boats became the builder for the Class, applying the same knowledge and processes used to manufacture consistent, one-design Olympic Class yachts for the Zephyr Class.

Designed by Des Townsend, a New Zealand Yacht Designer icon, in 1956, the Zephyr  has had seven builders over its 60 years of life, with MacKay Boats taking over the Zephyr’s hull construction in 2020. These boats are known as the #700 series.

Racing is highly competitive in this class which sees an average of 80 entries at its New Zealand National Championships.

The Hull and Deck

The hull is built from an epoxy laminate with a PVC foam core which are similar materials used in the construction of the 49ers. The laminate is designed to replicate the structure of the existing wooden boats.

The boat comes with all controls fitted, where the best fittings available are used for each function.

1873 Zephyr, believed to be Australia’s oldest yacht, languishing in dry dock on Yaringa Harbour

A YACHT believed to be Australia’s oldest is languishing in dry dock in a Western Port harbour — and the owner says even museums don’t want the historic vessel.

South East

Don't miss out on the headlines from South East    . Followed categories will be added to My News.

A VESSEL believed to be Australia’s oldest yacht is languishing in dry dock on a Western Port harbour.

The 1873 Zephyr has been “opening up” on the boards at Yaringa Harbour, near Hastings, since the end of 2012, with nobody regularly tending to the craft.

The boat’s American owner, Jim Madigan, told Leader he was hoping to visit Australia this year to “deal” with the issue.

He said there had been no interest from Australian museums, with one not even wanting it as a donation.

Mr Madigan bought Zephyr in 1994, but said his ownership of the boat had “not been a good experience”.

A plaque on the Zephyr, which was launched from Adelaide in 1873.

The curator of historic vessels at the Australian National Maritime Museum, David Payne, said the yacht — a seagoing cutter — had been in reasonable condition only several years ago when it sailed to Tasmania for a wooden boat festival.

He believed Zephyr must be “very close” to the country’s earliest yacht.

The boat was commissioned by the South Australian Supreme Court judge and MP Sir William Bundy.

Mr Payne said the boat had a fascinating history and was understood to be one of the oldest, perhaps the oldest in the country.

“It is a very early vessel, and it’s very regionally important to South Australia — there’s no doubt about that.”

The historic vessel is in need of restoration. Picture: David Smith

The owner of Yaringa Harbour, Stefan Borzecki, said Zephyr needed to be restored and should ideally be in a museum.

“I’m happy to load it onto a truck and send it off to where it needs to go,” he said.

Mr Payne said he would welcome the registration of Zephyr in the Australian National Maritime Museum’s register of historic vessels.

The State Government last year gave Mr Borzecki the go-ahead for a $95 million expansion of Yaringa Harbour into a tourism, residential, marine and conference centre.

Yaringa Harbour wins long-running fight for $95 million expansion after years of delay

Developers are now circling the 1 Lumeah Rd, Somerville, site — which has a price guide of about $15 million.

ABOUT A BOAT

Zephyr was built R. Playfair & Sons and launched in South Australia in 1873.

American Jim Madigan is the ninth owner of Zephyr, which was built with Huon pine for Supreme Court judge Sir Henry Bundy.

The vessel is believed to be the oldest recreational yacht in Australia — she raced until 1893, and was then used as a fishing boat around Kangaroo Island.

She last sailed off Tasmania in a wooden boat festival several years ago.

Zephyr is not currently listed on the Australian National Maritime Museum’s register of historic boats.
