For over forty five years the Bruce Roberts Group, with input from many designers, shipwrights, builders and owners, have been drawing detailed boat plans for sailboats and powerboats with the DIY boat builder specially in mind. These boatplans & designs range in size from 5.8 mts to 20 mts and can be built in many different materials.  We have boat plans & designs for building in steel or aluminium in either multichine, radius chine or round bilge hull forms.  Most boat plans & designs are also in fibreglass using either c-flex, foam sandwich or single skin hull construction methods or in cold moulded ply or strip plank using what is commonly know as wood epoxy boatbuilding. Thousands of boats marketed as Roberts designs have been built in backyards and successfully sailed around the world.

In our archives are nearly all the boat plans & designs that we have designed over the years.  If you are resurrecting an older Roberts boat then it is very likely we will still have the drawings to help.

The emphasis has always been on safety and the fact that when building your own boat you can not only build for less but can build what you want, not what a boat salesman tells you you need . The boat plans come with full size frame patterns and detailed construction drawings as well as information on building one's own tools, fitting self steering vane, mast, trailers (for trailerable boats) etc.

Bruce Roberts

Born in Victoria Australia Bruce was educated at Eltham High School & studied yacht design through the US based Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology. Bruce entered the marine industry and for several years operated a boat yard in Brisbane where he completed an informal boatbuilding apprenticeship. In 1968 Bruce founded BRUCE ROBERTS INTERNATIONAL YACHT DESIGN in partnership with Andrew Slorach … Andy is still involved in the business. In 1972 Bruce opened his first “International design office” in the USA. Bruce has since designed a huge range of sail and powerboats that have been built in fiberglass, steel, aluminum and wood epoxy. There are over 30,000 of Bruce’s designs in service worldwide.

42′ Steel Bruce Roberts 392B

A project for the right person!

*** UPDATED Sep.25 – Current Interior Photos *** Professionally built by Pacific Ocean Enterprise, this Bruce Roberts 392 B model includes a transom modification that extends the deck and adds a sugar scoop swim platform. This vessel was made for any kind of blue water adventure you can imagine and has already safely cruised thousands of miles of open Pacific Ocean! “GREY MATTER” is a 1994 42-foot pilothouse sailing yacht of custom-built welded steel construction, and is currently set up as a cutter-rigged sloop with a four-cylinder Isuzu diesel engine as auxiliary. The hull has a raked bow, radiused chines, long fin keel, skeg mounted rudder and counter transom stern. Overall accommodations include two sleeping cabins (V-Berth and Master), two heads (forward and aft), U-shaped galley, dinette, pantry, interior helm station, and elevated dining area/settee in the pilot house salon. The layout of the interior starting at the bow consists of a large V berth, enclosed head and galley to port, dinette and pantry to starboard. The main salon follows with helm station and navigation table starboard, raised dining table / settee to port and access to the machinery space beneath the cabin sole. The aft (Master) cabin follows with a roller-top study desk, transverse double berth and enclosed head with shower. On deck, there is a second helm station in the cockpit. Cockpit coaming includes lazarettes (one port, one starboard) for storage. All rigging is run back to the cockpit for easy and safe handling while underway. Custom offshore sails – genoa, staysail, and mainsail (new in 2018) – are in  LIKE NEW  condition. This vessel has been on the hard for 2 years undergoing refit. As of 2022, owners have completed 99% of hull replating (have cut out and re-welded – TIG and MIG – approx. 60sq.ft. of new mild steel plating). Once complete, main salon and aft haed will need renovation (as these interiors needed to be removed to access hull interior for welding), engine exhaust and drive components will need to be reconnected, as well as plumbing [see list below]. The right person can complete this refit and bring this boat back to ocean-going condition, as this is already a boat that could sail from the balmy tropics to the icey reaches of the arctic circle without skipping a beat! Outstanding Work (main items):

• reinstall propellor shaft
• reinstall water tankage
• new diesel tankage to be manufactured and installed (or water tankage could be split between diesel and water)
• install brand new SS 2-drawer Vitrifrigo fridge/freezer
• reinstall aft head shower pan, toilet, sink
• reinstall forward head (need purchase toilet, sink)
• renovate interior (install flooring in main salon, aft head,  rebuild settee in pilot house salon)
• reconnect exhaust system
• reinstall thru-hulls
• repair a couple small holes in deck
• barrier coat and repaint hull (interior repaired sections, and exterior) 
• purchase & refit deck mounted genoa and jib sail tracks (or attach fixed block points)

Owners are selling at the firm as-is price of just $20,000 given the vessel’s current refit progress. To sweeten the deal, they are fully committed to wrapping up the remaining hull welding as a prerequisite for this special offer.
