Amazing trip

Too many highlights to list! I loved seeing the birds on Genovesa, and the diversity of all of the islands. Every stop was incredible, and we had our naturalist, Roberto, there to guide us along. I was pleasantly surprised by the accommodations on the Eden, and the number of activities that were scheduled for us. This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Een aanrader voor een ieder!!!

Snorkelen in zee, wandeltochten over de eilanden, de verxorging aan boord! Met de complimenten En vriendelijke groeten, Jan van der Poll

EDEN CRUISE REVIEWS

Cruise rating: 3.1 /5 - 4 customer reviews

Hello Tamara, I wanted to send you an email now that we are back from our holiday in Ecuador. We had a great time on the Eden boat travelling around the Galápagos. The boat was spacious and comfortable. We were very happy with our cabin (#9). Luis Andrada the guide was great, very enthusiastic and knowledgable. All the boat crew were brilliant. They were always in a cheerful mood, eager to help if you had any query. We especially enjoyed the food that chef Walter produced for each meal. We haven't travelled on a small boat before so weren't sure how the food would be, what could be provided on a small boat. But the chef continued to amaze us all week. Every meal was delicious and well thought out. There was also plenty of food for everyone and a good variety of items with plenty of vegetables. The daily schedule, timings and trips were well planned out, organised, crew knew how to do everything so our time was maximised. Thank you for all your help last year in helping us find a boat and booking the Eden. We had a great time around the Galápagos and around the rest of Ecuador. Diana Frattali-Moreno December 2018 3.1
Hola Veronica. We were in Mexico until February 21 and I was unable to reply. Then I forgot when we arrived home! The trip to and around the Galapagos was amazing and everything we expected and more. Our naturalist, Ruben, was an excellent guide and the crew were all so kind and helpful. We liked that we were kept busy everyday with a variety of activities. The food was great and we were amazed at what the cook produced in the tiny galley. Alcohol was expensive - very expensive and lacked choice. The only real complaint was the coffee - quite undrinkable. Instant would have been much better - but that is just my opinion as I am very particular about my coffee. I would recommend that passengers take some of their own and/or some decent packets of tea. We have been recommending the 1 week trip to everyone, the week is long enough but not too long and with just the right amount of activity and variety. Thanks Sheila Anderson January 2018 3.1
Hello again Lilian! We want to thank for joining us the best trip in our lives. We are so pleased that everything worked so well logistically. You have always returned quickly with answer on all our questions. We appreciate it a lot. The boat Eden was a fantastic choice. Friendly crew. Good food.Great excurcions with a good guide. We thanks so much a lot. Sincerely Ulla and Per Leif and Anette Ulla Blomqvist Haggblad January 2017 3.1
Dear Veronica, I am back after a magnificent trip to Galapagos. Your organization, our guide Eduardo, and the crew of Eden were all outstanding. Also the program of visits was excellent. There is nothing I could suggest you should improve. Galapagos is a unique experience worth a lot. Thank you indeed! Ioannis Filis July 2012 3.1

Eden Galápagos Cruise+Flights

Your gateway to the galápagos islands, a galápagos cruise on board the eden.

Eden Galapagos Cruise+Flights

"Stylish" and "elegant" are the comments we most hear associated with Eden, and it's not hard to see why. Although she was only built in 1996 in Ecuador, she has the timeless lines of a classic luxury motor yacht. A 2002 total brought her even further up to date, and she now boasts a beautiful mix of traditional and contemporary features that make an Eden Galápagos cruise a real trip to paradise. What's even better is that our cruise packages on Eden now come with Galápagos flights included.

  • Purpose-built Galápagos motor yacht
  • Galápagos flights included in the price you pay
  • Snorkeling gear on board
  • Excellent choice of long and short itineraries

Space to enjoy the islands Eden has something you don't find very often in this class of Galápagos cruise ship - space! This means that 5 of her 8 cabins feature standard twin or double beds, with only 3 having bunks. Every cabin, no matter its layout, enjoys a private bathroom and shower and is airconditioned for your complete comfort. Lower deck cabins are beautifully decorated with a light and airy feel and feature traditional portholes. Upper deck cabins enjoy panoramic windows for unbroken views of the sea and islands.

Communal areas onboard Eden continue this theme of space and light. Her large saloon and dining area is tastefully decorated with traditional wood features and comfortable sofas, making it an ideal place to relax and swap your Galápagos stories with like-minded travelers.

Outside, there's a huge sundeck at the sterns of the upper deck with uninterrupted views. At the bow, there's a more intimate sun area where you can find some peace and quiet if you wish. On the main deck, there's a shaded area where you can enjoy the Galápagos air without the heat of the equatorial sun.

When it comes to food and drink, you'll be spoilt by your time on Eden. Most meals are served in a relaxed buffet style, giving you the chance to sample a wide range of delicious Ecuadorian and international dishes prepared by the ship's chef using fresh, local ingredients.

Experience Galápagos on land and sea When it comes to itineraries, Eden has a fantastic range of options, including 3-day itineraries for those who are only able to visit the Galápagos for a short time but still want a real taste of what the islands have to offer, as well as the more usual 5- and 7-day options.

Unlike many vessels in her class, Eden guests have use of complimentary snorkel equipment (with optional wetsuits available for hire if you wish) and there are plenty of opportunities to get in the water with rare endemic wildlife like Galápagos penguins, Galápagos sea lions, and marine iguanas.

The ship's highly experienced naturalist guides are bilingual, and they take great pride in making your experience of the Galápagos even more special by sharing their vast knowledge of the flora, fauna and natural history of this magical archipelago.

Our comments For us, Eden is that rare find - a fantastic mix of great value with superb facilities and excellent itineraries. Now she's even better value than ever because, for a short period, the price you pay includes flights to and from the mainland! Eden's classic motor yacht styling and spacious interior make her a superbly comfortable place from which to experience the magic of Galápagos. With flights now included, we don't think you'll find a better value Galápagos cruise at the moment.

Food & Drinks on board the Eden

The food on our Galapágos Cruises is among the very best you will find in South America. Most of the on-board chefs are internationally trained and have prior experience working in the best hotels and restaurants in Ecuador and indeed around the world.

You can expect a first-class selection of food, including a good variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, locally sourced poultry and fish/seafood, rice and pasta dishes. Most boats will always include some typical Ecuadorian dishes on the menu during your cruise. If you have specific dietary requirements then these can usually be accommodated by the chef providing you have given advance notice. Please make sure you tell us about any allergies or dietary requirements you have at the time you book with us. If you leave it until you arrive at the dockside, then it may well be impossible to accommodate your needs.

Most boats serve a range of options at meal times in a relaxed buffet-style. At the first class and luxury end of the market, some boats have more formal dining where you will be served at your seat. However the atmosphere is always relaxed on board our cruises, and never stuffy or formal.

At Galapatours we love and respect the pristine ecosystems and fascinating wildlife of the Galápagos Islands, and we insist that our cruise partners do too. To protect the archipelago all our cruise vessels must have sophisticated water filtration systems, modern efficient engines, and strict maintenance schedules to minimize pollution.

The Galápagos National Park authority also defines exact cruising routes that dictate which ships can visit highlights at specific times, as well as limiting passenger numbers. These measures ensure that animals and habitats are not disturbed by too many visitors.

Our commitment extends beyond the mandatory environmental standards for cruise vessels in the region: A portion of your trip price now contributes to our Conservation Project. This initiative empowers local communities to protect their territory, engage in reforestation, and prepare for long-term environmental stewardship. This way, your trip contributes to environmental protection and truly shows how travel can be a force for good! And you can also play your part by traveling responsibly and following our Eco Guidelines during your stay. Click here to find out more about these guidelines, our commitment to sustainable tourism, and the Galápagos National Park rules.

Eden Galapagos Cruise+Flights

Eden Yacht - March 2017 Review Just finished 8d/7n cruise! Why a cruise? Because land options take too much time to get to the fun activities! On land, you catch a speedboat where you want to go (say, Kicker Rock). So you leave at 9am - or whenever all of the scheduled guests arrive at the pier. You spend time getting to the site. After you are done, you get back on the speedboat for the ride back to the pier - and you are wet and itchy the whole time. Contrast to a cruise: You awake in the morning to a great breakfast and you are *already at* your morning spot. You do your activity (hike, snorkelling, etc.); when you're done, it's back on the boat for snacks and a shower and some relaxation / journalling as the boat takes you to the afternoon location. At which point you do the afternoon activities - and, when finished, you are able to clean up immediately (and eat a delicious dinner). For me - no comparison. It's a cruise every time. Boat - Pictures do not do the boat justice. Our stateroom had plenty of room, the common room is large and comfy, there are two different large outdoor lounge areas (both shade and sun), and the crew was so very nice and helpful. I never felt I was on top of the others on the boat or they were on top of me - there was always someplace I could go if I wanted some alone time. Plus, showers were always hot and the room always clean (thank you Alejandro!!) Food - Vegetarian / vegan options (we had both on our trip). Food was delicious! Passengers - This is a smaller boat (max 16 persons) and caters to a more budget-oriented crowd - this basically means you can count on folks who are active and intensely interested in getting the most out of their vacation. Which worked out great for us! We had U.S. folks, Australians, Canadians, Brazilians, Germans - and all very friendly. Activities - Everything happened on time, we were kept active on all of the islands. And we had such good times - hiking up Sierra Negra, swimming in the rain on the beach at Isabela, the oh-so-excellent snorkeling at Santiago, watching blue-footed boobies *mate* on North Seymour, hikes up in the Santa Cruz highlands (where we got to see a huge tortoise at the end of mating)...so many great memories (and pictures!). I'll write about the guide separately - Che-che, you are awesome, my friend. Cost - The overall trip was extremely affordable, and our request to the Eden for an extra 3 days would have been only $200/day per person (which I believe is a *substantial* discount over the pre-booked price and reflected a "last-minute" cruise deal price). Based on what others told me, I think the pre-booked price is around $350/day per person - and even at that price is well worth it! Tipping - You get two envelopes, one for the boat crew and one for the guide. For the boat crew, the suggested amount is $12-14 a day. For my 8d/7n cruise I tipped $110 to the crew, and $80 to the guide. For the two of us, that came out to $370 total in tips. Finally - should you prebook or do a last-minute deal? As I pointed out above, our last-minute request to extend our cruise by 3d got us a quote of $200 / day which I believe is a great last-minute price. However - you can only get a last-minute price if you are willing to wait to the last minute! During the high season this means you probably will not get the boat you want and you may need to be very flexible. In effect, you are arriving on San Cristobal or Santa Cruz, heading down to "el Centro", and checking with each tourist agency to find a last-minute cruise you want. In our case, it was worth the extra money to have everything setup ahead of time - all we had to do was get to Galapagos and we were taken care of from start to finish. Quelle: goo.gl/UUQhMk

Eden Yacht Review, Feb 2015 I traveled aboard the Eden on their 8-day Itinerary "B," 22 February through 01 March 2015. I traveled with my father, and counting us there were 13 passengers (the yacht carries up to 16). I have to say it was truly the trip of a lifetime. I've told all my friends about it. Basically, we saw everything we'd seen on all the nature documentaries over the years. The wildlife was abundant and unafraid (be sure you stay more than 6 feet away in accordance with the national park guidelines). Every day we would see amazing wildlife, and in the evening we'd talk about how we wished we could see [whatever animal], and then sure enough the next day we would see them! Galapagos sea lions, Sally Lightfoot crabs, and marine iguanas were everywhere. We also saw quite a few penguins, frigate birds, blue-footed boobies, land iguanas, lava lizards, flightless cormorants, green sea turtles, and giant tortoises. Less-commonly-seen on our trip but highlights nonetheless were Galapagos fur seals, eagle rays, stingrays, reef sharks, a Galapagos Hawk, ocean sunfish, and even a sperm whale! Expectation management: this is not a luxury cruise. It's not about relaxation--it's about sightseeing and exploring the various islands you'll visit. You'll be waking at sunrise and having breakfast, then immediately getting in the panga (rubber boat) for shore to hike for an hour, followed by an hour or more of snorkeling. Then it's back to the boat for lunch while you travel to the next stop for more of the same. That being said, it's much better than a larger ship, because there is no waiting in line for meals, tours, etc., you avoid crowds on the islands and the snorkeling spots, and you get to know everyone on the yacht. The cabins are small but you're not going to be spending much time in them. There is an indoor common area for passengers, with several natural history books so you can identify what you're seeing (though I had brought some of my own as well), and lounge space on deck, both sunny and shaded. The food was EXCELLENT. The small size of the yacht (compared with larger cruise ships) means if you're prone to seasickness, you probably will be sick more than once during your trip. Though the seas are generally fairly calm during the time of year we traveled, almost half the passengers were sick at least once. Even so, there were no complaints as the overall experience more than made up for the temporary discomfort. It can be difficult to sleep if it's a night where the yacht is underway and the seas are rough. The crew were outstanding and friendly. Our guide, David, was extremely knowledgeable, humorous, and very personable. I can't recommend this cruise enough--if you prefer DOING things more than relaxing, and don't mind close quarters and a more intimate experience, this is the trip for you. Quelle: goo.gl/B9jJ5U

Humboldt Explorer Galapagos

Humboldt Explorer

The Humboldt Explorer is a specialist Galápagos dive vessel that believes that divers should enjoy a touch of luxury! Her 8 air-conditioned cabins are located on the main and lower decks for maximum stability. Each of them has a private bathroom, flat screen TV and panoramic windows that provide stunning ocean views. Most rooms can be converted to either one queen bed or two twin beds. Communal spaces are equally delightful, and highlights include a partially shaded sun deck with a Jacuzzi and ample comfortable seating, and an extremely comfortable salon area with dining, bar and entertainment area. The large dive deck is extremely well-equipped and features include a bathroom, a large camera table with charging station, individual storage areas, and rinse bins for cameras and another for gear. All diving operations are conducted from two large pangas (tenders), easily boarded from the dive deck, and conducted by one of 8 specialist dive guides who work on board in rotation. The Humboldt may be luxurious, but she's definitely a dive ship first, and her dives are often at an advanced level, against currents, challenging and therefore more rewarding than many on offer in the archipelago. Because of this, guests will need to be certified as open water scuba divers by an internationally recognized and certified organization and should be experienced (they recommend that you have more than 100 logged dives) and must have logged at least one dive within the 6 months prior to boarding the vessel. Our Comments Captains Carlos and Jorge are very experienced sailors and they lead an expert crew, including great naturalist divers. Roberto, the chef produces a really varied menu, and there's something different at every meal. Unusually, local beers are included in your package, but the bar has a good variety of other drinks to suit all tastes. We really like the combination of serious dive boat and luxury cruise vessel - usually you have to choose from one or the other, but in our opinion the Humboldt Explorer is the best of both worlds, and it's a fantastic place to relax after a day of incredible diving.

Aggressor III Galapagos Diving Cruise

Aggressor III

Galápagos is one of the most exciting destinations in the world. Guests will have the opportunity to dive with playful Sea Lions, travel to the famous Darwin and Wolf for thrilling diving to see Hammerhead Sharks, Whale Sharks, clouds of Tuna and much more on their Galápagos Islands liveaboard scuba diving trip. The scenic view of the Darwin Arch is as picturesque as you can imagine. The GALAPAGOS AGGRESSOR® liveaboard departs from Baltra every Thursday afternoon. In 2016, Ecuador created a marine sanctuary in the area of Darwin and Wolf that includes 15,000 square miles as off limits to all fishing to conserve the sharks that congregate there and the ecosystem on which they rely. 32% of the waters around the Galápagos islands will now be protected from fishing. Our goal is to provide you with the ultimate Galápagos Islands liveaboard scuba diving experience. The GALAPAGOS AGGRESSOR® offers a brand new itinerary in compliance with the Galápagos National Park regulations which requires companies with permits to follow the exact itinerary below. A maximum of four dives will be offered daily; two in the morning and two in the afternoon. In addition, two night dives and two land excursions per week will be offered. The new diving areas added to the itinerary are: Bartolome Punta, Cousins Rock and Cabo Douglas. The Galápagos National Park grants approval for normal itineraries and accepts requests for special itineraries.

Grand Daphne, Galpatours

Grand Daphne

A Galápagos cruise on board the Grand Daphne proves that you don’t have to have a huge budget to see the best the Galápagos has to offer in comfort. Built in 1979 and fully refitted in 2015, Grand Daphne and her crew pride themselves on offering a 1st Class service and experience at a superb price. **Traditional Motor Yacht** Grand Daphne is a traditional motor yacht design, and she’s proud of this heritage. Yet despite this, she offers comfortable accommodation with some features you wouldn’t necessarily expect on a cruise vessel this class. Cabins are located on the upper or lower decks, with communal areas on the main deck between. Guests who are prone to motion sickness will appreciate the cabins on the lower decks, as they will have less movement. These are laid out as twin bunk beds, although the lower bunks are big enough for a cozy couple if you prefer! All the rooms feature traditional porthole style windows, wood finishes, en suite bathroom with complimentary toiletries, and individual air conditioning for your comfort. Upper deck cabins are a mix of twin bunk and traditional beds, and they offer lovely panoramic windows, giving you stunning views of the Galápagos Islands and the sea. All the cabins feature 110V outlets for charging your devices, as well as reading lights and plenty of storage. **Eat, Drink and Relax** Grand Daphne’s main deck hosts her dining room and salon. These areas feature a stunning polished teak floor, and lots of other beautiful real wood fixtures and fittings. Two dining tables set for eight people each ensures a delightful, sociable mealtime experience, allowing you to share the memories of your day exploring Galápagos with like-minded travelers while you enjoy the view from the huge picture windows. Delicious local and international dishes are served her, and the chef uses only the freshest local ingredients, so you can enjoy three wonderful meals as well as plenty of tasty snacks throughout the day. Also located here is the ship’s well-stocked bar, which can serve you a variety of local and imported beers, wines and spirits. Water, tea, and coffee are always available, 24 hours, free of charge to all our cruise guests. The lounge features a wonderful U-shaped couch, which again sums up the social focus of this relaxed boat. Here you can chat, unwind with a drink, or watch a movie on the flat screen TV with DVD player. This is also where your expert bilingual naturalist guide will give you amazing briefings about the islands and their unique flora and fauna, and outline the next day’s activities on your Galápagos adventure. Outside, you can climb the stairway up to the stunning sundeck. This runs the whole length of the boat and offers wonderful views. There is plenty of seating and comfortable loungers up here, and for those who don’t want to get too much sun, there’s a shaded area to cool off in. If you’re looking for a little more privacy, Galápagos Grand Daphne has a small shaded terrace at the stern end of the main deck with comfortable seating for three or four. **Fantastic Itineraries** Grand Daphne’s expert Galápagos naturalist guide will really make your trip come to life, thanks to their knowledge of the islands and the best places to see what the archipelago has to offer. Grand Daphne has a choice of two eight day itineraries and two shorter for or five day itineraries. Each of Grand Daphne’s cruise itineraries have been carefully planned to give you a real flavor of a key area of the Galápagos archipelago. For the ultimate experience, why not join the two eight day itineraries into a complete Galápagos experience - this would make a fabulous trip of a lifetime at a really superb price. As well as island excursions by “panga” (inflatable boat) you will also go snorkeling with sea lions and turtles thanks to the complimentary snorkel gear carried on board Grand Daphne. For guests who wish to hire a wetsuit, these are available for only $5 per day. **Our comments** Experiencing the Galápagos aboard the yacht Grand Daphne is a superb option for those who are looking to enjoy an amazing Galápagos experience on a budget, but would like to enjoy more space and comfort than is usually available on a budget class boat. Grand Daphne’s crew are consistently highly rated - they go above and beyond to make sure you have an amazing time. We really like her itineraries, they have been cleverly put together - but if you can stretch to it, joining the two eight-day trips would make for a remarkable “special occasion” trip of a lifetime.

Xavier III Galapagos Cruise+Flights

- National flights + Hotels before cruise included; - Excellent value ship; - More spacious than most in class; - Free snorkel and wetsuit hire; - Highly rated crew. Sometimes choosing a Galápagos cruise that is more towards the budget end means sacrificing some comforts and making some compromises like bunk beds or no private bathroom. The Xavier III bucks this trend by offering spacious, comfortable accommodation and really pleasant surroundings at a superb price point. When you combine this with a really friendly crew who consistently get great feedback from guests, you’ve got a fantastic option to see the best of Galápagos. Cosy cabins with twin beds No bunk beds here! The Xavier III has eight lovely cabins, all with proper twin beds. You have a choice of lower or upper decks. Upper deck cabins enjoy large windows providing a lovely view, but for those prone to motion sickness we recommend the lower deck cabins where the ship’s motion is not felt so much. You don’t have to worry about the lower deck cabins being dark on a Xavier III cruise as they have traditional portholes that let natural light in. Like all the cabins, they are also well decorated in light color shades and have a really airy feel. Every cabin enjoys a private bathroom with hot shower, and each is equipped with air conditioning for your comfort. They all have storage for your clothes and personal items. Relaxed, comfortable, communal The rest of the ship has a lovely relaxed feel. The main lounge is edged by comfortable communal couches, and is the perfect place to relax with a drink and relive your Galápagos adventures with fellow guests, or to listen to an inspiring talk from your expert naturalist guide about the Galápagos islands, their wildlife and habitats. Outside there are two sundecks, one shaded on the main deck, and one open to the full equatorial sun on the upper deck. This last is an absolutely perfect place to come as darkness falls, and simply lie on one of the comfortable loungers whilst watching the stars come out in the stunning Galápagos night sky - a “must do” on any Xavier III cruise! Eat, drink and be merry Xavier III’s chef cooks a wide range of tasty and filling local and international dishes, all freshly prepared using local ingredients. You can enjoy your meals in the dining room, filled with light from its panoramic windows, as well as enjoying snacks on the sundeck. You won’t go hungry on this Galápagos cruise! The lounge also houses the ship’s bar, which is well stocked with local and imported beers, wines and liquors. You can even enjoy a cocktail or two. Snorkel masks, fins and snorkels are yours to enjoy at no charge, as are wetsuits - usually an additional charge item on most vessels of this class in the Galápagos cruise fleet. The wonderful Galápagos Of course all this is a bonus when compared to seeing first hand the wonders of the Galápagos islands themselves. Xavier III offers a range of cruise itineraries, including five and eight day cruises, as well as the very popular extended 12 and 15 day options, for those who want to make the very most of their time cruising the Galápagos. Your on-board naturalist guide will give daily briefings about the next day’s locations, their history and geology, as well as the plants and animals you are likely to encounter on your Xavier cruise. The various itineraries take in different parts of the archipelago, so if you need help finding the perfect one for you, simply contact one of our Galápagos experts today and we’ll advise you. Our thoughts We have a soft spot for a cruise on Xavier III. We really like that she doesn’t force you to choose bunks for your budget-friendly Galápagos experience, and her lovely lounge is one of our favorites among all the ships in this class. Guests frequently comment on the great service they receive on board, and unlike other ships in this price range you have a really good choice of itineraries, showing you the very best of the Galápagos. Oh and they have free wetsuit hire - something most of the first class and luxury boats could learn from!

Hello - we are continuing our research on a Galapagos trip (8 day/7 night) for early November. I'm been working through Happy Gringo and they sent us options, most of which I've been able to research extensively on here. The options include Nemo 1, Beagle, Samba and Odyssey, all of which have been talked about extensively on the Forum, so I've found a lot of information. However, the option they actually recommended of them all was the Eden itinerary to:

- Bartolome

- Black Turtle Cove

- Santa Cruz

It doesn't hit Isabela at all, and certainly not the west side of it. I was surprised this is the one they are recommending and wondering if it's because it's least popular. I've been unable to find out much about Eden on the Forum. Does anyone have any experience with it?

For Eden reviews, see "Any more reviews of boats?" in the "Top Questions" at the upper right of the page. The Eden is at the top of the list

eden yacht galapagos

In an 8-day itinerary, you are limited as to what distant island you can get to. The most popular division of itineraries for a boat are eastern (featuring Genovesa & Española) and western (featuring Isabela and Fernandina). A small # of boats have a "northwestern" itinerary, which hits Genovesa, Isabela, and Fernandina; an even smaller # have a "southwestern" itinerary, going to Española, Isabela, and Fernandina. No boat gets to all 4 of those distant, fascinating islands in 8 days--they're just too far apart.

I have a vague recollection that the Beagle has a northwestern itinerary as 1 of its 2, but I'm not certain about that. And that sailing date might not fit with your dates. But it might be worth a question to see if any of these will get you to 3 of the 4 islands in either of the less common itineraries. Those 2 itineraries are my favorites!

Thanks John, I saw that but the review is from 4 years ago, so I was looking for something more recent.

Daphne Island

Daphne mayor.

The National Park service restricts visitors allowed to visit Daphne and it is a select few that are able to visit this special place. Visitors venture up a steep trail to the crater rim. Finches, masked boobies, short-eared owls and Galapagos martins are visible along the way. Red-billed tropicbirds nest in the cliffs near the summit. Magnificent frigatebirds build their nests in the little vegetation that occurs on the Island’s slopes and near the crater rim.

Highlights: Intense bird watching opportunities including nesting blue-footed boobies, masked boobies and tropicbirds Animals: Finches, masked boobies, short-eared owls, Galapagos martins, red-billed tropicbirds, frigatebirds, blue-footed boobies, great blue herons

Santiago Island

Sullivan bay.

The Sullivan Bay lava field has a variety of interesting patterns made by the shapes and textures of trees that once existed there and hornitos caused when pockets of gas or water trapped under the lava exploded. The low-lying mollugo and the lava cactus are the only plants that have managed to take root in this harsh environment. On the shoreline black and white oystercatchers can be seen fishing for crabs and molluscs in the tide pools.

Highlights: Geology and volcanology Animals: Oystercatchers, great blue herons, lava herons, lava lizards, marine iguanas, mockingbirds

Puerto Egas

Puerto Egas, with its black sand beaches, was the site of small salt mining industry in the 1960s. A hike inland to the salt crater is an excellent opportunity to sight land birds such as finches, doves, and hawks. A walk down the rugged shoreline will turn up many marine species. Iguanas bask on the rocks and sea lions laze in the tide pools. At the end of the trail there is a series of grottoes or sea caves where fur seals and night herons are found.

Highlights: Salt crater; tide pools Animals: Finches, doves, hawks, iguanas, fur seals, night herons

Espumilla Beach

This large coffee-coloured sand beach is just north of the prized fresh water supply that once attracted pirates and whalers. A short walk inland will take you through a mangrove forest normally inhabited by the common stilt. Sea turtles also visit these mangroves to nest. Beyond the mangroves is a brackish lagoon where flocks of pink flamingos and white-cheeked pintails can be seen. Sea turtles often lay their eggs on Espumilla Beach.

Highlights: One of the most idyllic locations in the Galapagos Islands; great place for swimming and snorkeling Animals: Common stilts, sea turtles, pink flamingos, white-cheeked pintails, Galapagos finches, vermilion fly catchers, lava lizards, mockingbirds

Buccaneer Cove

Buccaneer Cove is a testament to the fact that Santiago Island was once a refuge for British buccaneers. These pirates would anchor in the protected bay to make repairs and stock up on tortoise meat among other things. The steep cliffs, where hundreds of seabirds perch in front of the dark red sand beach, are a magnificent site.

Highlights: Sea birds, historical site, snorkeling, rock formations Animals: Galápagos seahorses, octopuses, hammerheads, Galápagos sharks, green sea tortoises, eagle rays, barracudas

Fernandina Island

Espinosa point.

Punta Espinosa is a narrow stretch of land where hundreds of marine iguanas gather largely on black lava rocks. The famous flightless cormorant inhabits this island and Galápagos penguins, pelicans and sea lions are also abundant. Different types of lava flows can be compared and the mangrove forests can be observed.

Highlights: Galápagos snakes, marine iguanas, lava cactus, lava Animals: Marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, Galápagos penguins, pelicans, sea lions, Galápagos snakes, great blue herons, green sea turtles, lava herons, lava lizards, Madeiran storm petrels, mockingbirds

Isabela Island

Las tintoreras.

A short distance from Puerto Villamil is the small island known as Las Tintoreras. Here a colony of white tip sharks can often be seen resting in a lava canal. You can snorkel or swim in the unique habitat of these animals. On the nearby sandy beaches, sea lions play and relax in the sun. This is one of Isabela's most beautiful visitor sites.

Highlights: Snorkeling

Animals: Sea Lions, white-tip reef sharks, marine iguanas

Tortoise Breeding Center

This center was created to protect animals in their first years of life from the threats of foreign species such as pigs and donkeys. Giant tortoise eggs are collected and brought to the center where they are hatched and kept for five years before being released to their natural environment.

Highlights: Two of the five sub-species of the giant tortoise. Animals: Tortoises

The Wetlands of Isabela Island are located just outside of Puerto Villamil. The Wetlands consist of lagoons, swamps and mangroves and are home to a variety of unique bird species such as common stilts, whimbrels, white-cheeked pintails and gallinules. The Wetlands can be visited on foot via a path that winds through the swamps.

Highlights: Giant mangroves, shore birds Animals: Common stilts, whimbrels, white-cheeked pintails, gallinules

The Wall of Tears

Between 1946 and 1959 Isabela was a penal colony, where prisoners were made build a wall with huge blocks of lava as punishment. Due to the arduous labour and harsh conditions in which the prisoners lived, this site is known as the wall of tears. A set of stairs provides a bird's eye view of the wall and the surrounding landscape. You can still see the foundations of a USA base from the Second World War.

Highlights: View of the wall Animals: Lava lizards, Galápagos finches, hawks

Named after a British warship which anchored here in 1814, this cove is located to the west of the island and you can take a panga (zodiac) trip below the high cliffs. Here there is an opportunity to see penguins as well as marine iguanas, Sally Lightfoot crabs and sea lions. Blue-footed boobies are also in abundance.

Highlights: Pirate graffiti on the rocks Animals: Penguins, marine iguanas, Sally Lightfoot crabs, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, green sea turtles, lava lizards, mockingbirds

Vicente Roca Point

Here the remnants of an ancient volcano form two turquoise coves with a bay well protected from the ocean swells. The spot is a popular anchorage from which to explore the cliffs, where masked and blue-footed boobies perch while flightless cormorants inhabit the shoreline. The upwelling of coldwater currents in this part of the Galápagos give rise to an abundance of marine life, which make Punta Vicente Roca one of the archipelago’s sough after dive spots.

Highlights: Sheltered coves and abundant marine life Animals: Masked and blue-footed boobies, flightless cormorants, sea lions, pelicans, penguins

The waters of Urbina Bay are a good place to see turtles and rays and ashore is a short trail leading to a coral reef, which is evidence of an uplift from the sea which occurred in 1954. This provides the rare experience of walking in the middle of a bed of coral. Marine iguanas, flightless cormorants and pelicans can be seen at this site.

Highlights: Walking on a bed of coral Animals: Giant tortoises, rays, marine and land iguanas, flightless cormorants, pelicans, lava lizards, mockingbirds

Sierra Negra Volcano

The Sierra Negra Volcano boasts the largest basaltic caldera in Galapagos at 9 x 10km. The site offers impressive views and the opportunity to observe up to 7 species of finch and a rich display of vegetation. The north side of the caldera provides evidence of its most recent volcanic activity in 2005

Highlights: Basaltic caldera, stunning views, finches

Floreana Island

Cormorant point.

Noted for the volcanic green olivine crystals found in the beach, Cormorant Point offers a trail overlooking a saltwater lagoon that is a favourite of flamingos. Beyond the lagoon the trail leads to a magnificent white-sand beach. Green sea turtles lay their eggs in the sands here during the night and their tracks leading to and from the sea mark the beach.

Highlights: Flamingos Animals: Flamingos, green sea turtles

Devil’s Crown

Arguably the best snorkeling site in the islands, Devil's Crown is a collapsed volcanic cone that boasts an extraordinary number and variety of fish. It is a popular roosting site for seabirds such as boobies, pelicans, and frigates. In addition, sharks, sea lions, sea turtles and eels can be found amongst the rocks and corals.

Highlights: Snorkeling Animals: Boobies, pelicans, frigates, sharks, sea lions, sea turtles, eels

Post Office Bay

The best known site on Floreana is Post Office Bay, a white-sand beach where in the past sailors used to leave and receive their letters in a barrel. The tradition continues - leave your postcard in the barrel and see how long it takes to be delivered, and at the same time if there is a postcard with an address close to your home, please take it with you.

Highlights: Post office barrel Animals: Sea lions, great blue herons, Madeiran storm petrels

Española Island

Suárez point.

This is one of the most outstanding wildlife areas of the archipelago, with a long list of species found along its cliffs and sand or pebble beaches. In addition to five species of nesting seabirds there are the curious and bold Española Island mockingbirds, Galápagos doves and Galápagos hawks. Several types of reptiles, including the marine iguana and the oversized lava lizard, are unique to this island.

Highlights: High concentration of wildlife Animals: Española Island mockingbirds, Galápagos doves, Galápagos hawks, marine iguanas, lava lizards

Gardner Bay

Gardner Bay has a magnificent beach with turquoise waters. Around the small islets nearby, snorkellers will find lots of fish and sometimes turtles and sharks. The bay is also frequented by a transient colony of sea lions which like to swim with you. Birds, like the endemic Hood-mockingbird and different species of Darwin finches, are omnipresent.

Highlights: Beach; snorkeling Animals: Madeiran storm petrels, marine iguanas, sea lions, turtles, sharks

Osborn Islet

This small island to the southeast of Española Island is a marine visit where you can enjoy fantastic snorkeling and swimming.

Highlights: Snorkeling and swimming Animals: Colorful fish

San Cristobal Island

The self-guided walking tour will take you through the history of the Islands in the context of nature, humankind and conservation.

Highlights: Interactive exhibits Animals: N/A

Isla Lobos (Sea Lion Island)

This small island is named after the sea lions that rest and play on its rocky shores. It is also home to blue-footed boobies, great frigate-birds, brown pelicans, lava gulls, common noddies, yellow warblers and small and medium ground finches. There is good snorkeling in the clear waters of the channel and this is one of the best sites at which to swim with sea lions underwater.

Highlights: Swimming with sea lions Animals: Sea lions, boobies, frigate-birds, pelicans

León Dormido (Kicker Rock)

This small, distinctive island comprises two rocks which jut out of the ocean and is home to a large colony of sea birds. Kicker Rock is an excellent dive site where you could see many reef fish as well as hammerhead and Galápagos sharks. Sightings of large rays and turtles are common but not guaranteed.

Highlights: Diving; snorkeling Animals: Boobies, reef fish, sharks

Cerro Brujo (Wizard’s Hill)

One of the first sites visited by Charles Darwin, Cerro Brujo is a beautiful white-sand beach where brown pelicans, blue-footed boobies, sea lions, and marine iguanas can all be found. An onshore version of nearby Kicker Rocks, Cerro Brujo is a very striking, eroded tuff cone. There is also fantastic snorkeling in the turquoise waters.

Punta Pitt is located on the northeastern corner of San Cristóbal Island. The trail includes an olivine beach approximately 90 meters/295 feet and a trail that ascends to the top of a volcanic tuff hill passing through several natural viewpoints The walking trail is 1,400 meters/nearly one mile, with an estimated time of two hours, round trip. Punta Pitt is composed of volcanic tuff substrate. High winds present there have led to a unique form of natural erosion..

Highlights: Hiking Animals: Three species of boobies and 2 species of frigates, sea lions

La Galapaguera

At this information centre in the highlands you will learn about the giant tortoise breeding programme established by the National Park. You can see giant land tortoises living in a semi-natural habitat and also learn about their origin, evolution and the threats from introduced animals.

Highlights: Giant tortoises Animals: Giant tortoises

Santa Cruz Island

Tortuga bay.

Tortuga Bay is a pristine location with a beautiful white-sand beach. It is a great place for swimming and even surfing. Tortuga Bay is also a favorite place for sea turtles (which gave the beach its name), sea lions, marine iguanas, pelicans, flamingos and lava gulls which are endemic to the Islands and are commonly found along the shore of most beaches.

Highlights: Pristine white-sand beach with sea turtles Animals: Sea turtles, sea lions, marine iguanas, pelicans, flamingos, lava gulls

The highlands are located in the northern part of the island and can reach elevations up to 1500 meters. On a journey into the higher elevations of Santa Cruz you will experience all seven different vegetation zones. The vegetation here is abundant and lush and the weather moist.

Highlights: Vegetation Animals: Galápagos flycatchers, small tree-finches, woodpecker finches

Los Gemelos

Los Gemelos, Spanish for The Twins, are two volcanic depressions on the highest part of Santa Cruz. The larger of the two volcanic pits is featured here. In contrast to the dry coastal lowlands, the highlands are covered by mist in the garua (foggy) season and receive thus much more moisture and support a more luxuriant vegetation.

Highlights: Luxuriant vegetation Animals: Vermillion flycatchers, woodpecker finches, short eared owls

Whale Bay is the site of one of the oldest whaling camps on Santa Cruz Island. It was to here and the other similar camps that the giant tortoises were brought before being loaded onboard the whalers and pirate ships. The semicircle beach is green in color, due to a high volume of olivine crystals. The curious Galápagos hawk can also found here.

Highlights: Green beach Animals: Galápagos hawks, Galápagos sea lions, marine iguanas, Darwin’s finches, yellow warblers, frigate birds, blue-footed boobies

Bachas Beach

Located on the north shore of Santa Cruz, Las Bachas is a swimming beach. One of the few remnants of the U.S. World War II presence in the Galápagos, a floating pier, can be seen here. You may see flamingos, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black necked stilts, and whimbrels. Sea turtles also nest off the beach.

Highlights: World War II remnants Animals: Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black necked stilts, whimbrels, sea turtles

Dragon Hill

The Dragon Hill (Cerro Dragon) visitors’ site was established by the Galápagos Islands National Park administration. A hypersalinic (saltier than the ocean) lagoon behind the beach is often frequented by flamingos, common stilts, pintail ducks and other species of birds. There is a short walk to the hill, which has rewarding views of the bay and a nesting site of land iguanas.

Highlights: Hypersalinic lagoon Animals: Flamingos, common stilts, pintail ducks, land and marine iguanas, great blue and lava herons, lava lizards, mockingbirds

Charles Darwin Research Station

The CDRS is an international not-for-profit organization that provides scientific research, technical information and assistance to ensure the proper preservation of the Galápagos Islands. Visitors can learn about natural history, issues concerning the islands, and see the tortoise breeding and rearing project at work.

Highlights: Tortoise breeding Animals: Giant tortoises, great blue herons, land iguanas, lava lizards, mockingbirds

Carrion Point

Carrion Point creates a sheltered lagoon with beautiful, turquoise water. During this visit you can snorkel and see a variety of fish, rays and perhaps the harmless white-tip reef sharks. The point is on the north coast of Santa Cruz Island at the entrance of Channel of Itabaca.

Highlights: Snorkeling Animals: Fish, rays, white-tip reef sharks

CharlesDarwin

Genovesa island.

The beach is a coral beach where a 750m trail takes you through more seabird colonies. You get to see the cliffs from the seaward side, which are home to a large red-footed booby colony. Once ashore the number of birds seems overwhelming – Nazca boobies soar overhead, great frigatebirds display their pouches while resting on the nearby rocks and plants, and mockingbirds scamper quickly across the sand.

Highlights: Incredible birding opportunities Animals: Nazca boobies, great frigatebirds, mockingbirds, wandering tattlers, lava gulls, whimbrels, turnstones, yellow-crowned, black-crowned and lava herons, white and yellow warblers, red-footed boobies, sharp-beaked finch, large cactus finches, large ground finches, Galápagos doves, swallow-tailed gulls, Madeiran storm petrels, marine iguanas

Prince Phillip’s Step (El Barranco)

An extraordinary, steep path leads through a seabird colony full of life, up to cliffs that are 25m high. At the top the trail continues inland, passing more seabird colonies in a thin palo santo forest. Leaving the forest you can overview a rocky plain. You could get a view of masked and red-footed boobies, great frigate birds, swallow-tailed gulls, red-billed tropicbirds and hundreds of storm petrels at the edge of the cliff.

Highlights: Seabird colony Animals: Masked and red-footed boobies, great frigatebirds, swallow-tailed gulls, red-billed tropicbirds, Madeiran storm petrels, Galápagos fur seals, lava gulls, marine iguanas, mockingbirds

Rabida Island (San Salvador or James)

The high amount of iron contained in the lava at Rábida gives it a distinctive red color. White-Cheeked Pintail Ducks live in a salt-water lagoon close to the beach, where brown pelicans and boobies have built their nests. Up until recently, flamingos were also found in the salt-water lagoon, but they have since moved on to other islands, likely due to a lack of food on Rábida. Nine species of Finches have been reported in this island.

Bartholomew Island (Bartolomé)

Bartolomé Island is a volcanic islet just off the east coast of Santiago Island in the Galápagos Islands Group. It is one of the "younger" islands in the Galápagos archipelago. This island, and Sulivan Bay on Santiago island, are named after naturalist and life-long friend of Charles Darwin, Sir Bartholomew James Sulivan, who was a Lieutenant aboard HMS Beagle.

North Seymour Island

The 2km trail crosses the inland of the island and explores the rocky coast, passing colonies of blue-footed boobies and magnificent frigatebirds. Daphne Major and Minor can be spotted in the distance and body surfing sea lions play close to the shore. Along the shoreline marine iguanas, white coral and black lava rocks complete the visit to North Seymour.

Highlights: Rare Galápagos snakes, nesting frigatebirds, swallowtail gulls and blue-footed boobies, land iguanas Animals: Galápagos snakes, land iguanas, lava gulls, lava lizards, magnificent frigatebirds, marine iguanas, mockingbirds

Mosquera Island

Located between North Seymour and Baltra is the small island of Mosquera. The island consists is a long narrow stretch of white sand, rocks, and tide pools. Created by geological uplift the island has a flat look to it rather than the conical shape of the volcanically formed islands. Mosquera is a great place for visitors to wander without the typical restrictions of the other islands. It is ideal for snorkeling, strolling on the beach, and enjoying the animal life.

Highlights: Large population of sea lions Animals: Great blue herons, lava gulls, lava herons, lava lizards, marine iguanas

Santa Fe Island

Santa Fe is a volcanic uplift and hosts a forest of Opuntia cactus, which are the largest of the archipelago, and palo santo. Weathered cliffs provide a haven for swallow-tailed gulls, red-billed tropic birds, and sehar-waters petrels. The Santa Fe species of land iguanas are often seen, as well as lava lizards. There is a picturesque turquoise lagoon and calm waters where you can snorkel amongst sea lions.

Highlights: Land iguanas, Galápagos hawks, playful sea lion pups Animals: Frigate birds, Galápagos hawks, land and marine iguanas, manta rays, sea turtles, sea lions, lava lizards, mockingbirds

Santa Fe (Barrington)

Santa Fe (Barrington) is home to the small picturesque bay and anchorage on the island's northeast coast. The bay has two visitor trails, one leading to a scenic viewpoint atop a cliff, and the others

Highlights: Land Iguanas, giant Opuntia cacti panning from a small beach to a tall prickly pear cactus forest

South Plaza Island

South Plaza has one of the largest populations of land iguanas in the Galápagos. It is also home to marine iguanas and a hybrid iguana whose fathers are marine iguanas and mothers are land iguanas. There are cliffs with spectacular views and a rocky trail circumnavigates the island displaying the combination of dry and coastal vegetation zone. The island is home to enormous prickly pear cactus and the endemic succulent sesuvian.

Highlights: Land iguanas, nesting swallow tail gulls and snorkeling with friendly sea lions Animals: Land iguanas, lava lizards, Madeiran storm petrels, marine iguanas

Santa Fe Island

Santa Fe is a great place to see amazing wildlife. To view Opuntia, a forest of giant pear cactus (Opuntia), hike towards the island's northern shore. This is where you will find endemic land Iguanas. This is also a great spot to view sea turtles and sea lions. You might even see a whitetip reef Shark from the panga.

A False Start Aboard the Eden Yacht

By: Author Dave Lee

Posted on Last updated: April 27, 2021

Airport on Santa Cruz Island

Touching down on the tarmac at Santa Cruz Island , it felt as though my Galapagos Islands adventure had finally begun.

The Eden yacht and its crew were awaiting me in a nearby harbor, but first, some paperwork had to be taken care of in the airport.

As I waited in line to show my passport and pay my $100 park entrance fee, additional planes arrived.

Sundays, it turns out, are the busiest days of the week, with up to a half dozen planes arriving in the morning.

Once the payment was made, my carry-on bag was searched, and I could collect my larger backpack.

Walking out the backside of the airport building, I saw a local holding a sign for The Eden yacht. It was Felipe who'd serve as our naturalist/guide for the whole 8-day journey.

Eden Yacht awaits its newest passengers in the harbor near the airport.

Boarding the Eden Yacht

But before we could get going, we had to wait for the rest of the boat's passengers to arrive. And that took another 45 minutes, as they were on the flight that arrived after mine.

By the time we left in the shuttle bus to the harbor, everyone else had already reached their boats.

A panga (or small dinghy ) was dispatched from Eden to ferry us over. Pangas are used by all the cruise ships to take passengers back and forth between the boats and islands and for snorkeling.

Everyone was excited to reach the yacht, which would serve as our home for the next seven days and nights.

My first impressions were very positive as I explored the yacht's main deck.

The interior design was modern; there were tablecloths on the two dining room tables, a handsome bar, and even a flat-screen TV in the lounge area.

Once everyone and their luggage were aboard, we were shown to our rooms.

I wasn't surprised to learn I was bunking with Sebastian, a Canadian truck driver with a penchant for backpacking; however, neither of us expected to be given a room on the 2nd level.

Given Sebastien towered over me, I took the top bunk, which was a little narrow, but would suffice for a week.

The bathroom was small, clean, and better than I expected. In addition to a central AC system feeding the room, we had the ability to open our window and let a breeze in.

Next, we had a briefing by Felipe regarding the afternoon's itinerary. We'd have our first nature walk on nearby Bachas Beach, followed by snorkeling, but first, we'd have lunch.

For the passenger's comfort, I gather, all meals are served while the boat is stationary, so we ate while bobbing around in the now-empty harbor.

The family-style dining tables were a good icebreaker, and everyone began to get to know one another.

A heron walks along the beach at sunset

Bachas Beach on Santa Cruz Island

After lunch, we motored over to Bachas Beach. Several other yachts were already anchored offshore, and I began to wonder if we'd have time to snorkel.

It seemed like we'd been behind schedule since the airport, but I tried not to let it bother me.

We boarded the Eden Yacht's two pangas and sped toward shore.

As we got closer, a giant flock of Blue Footed Boobies could be seen. And people were snorkeling amongst them all in the clear blue waters.

By now, the sun was already fading toward the horizon, and I knew we were too short on time. I accepted that we would miss our first snorkel and reminded myself there'd be many more that week.

Felipe led us to two separate ponds where Chilean Flamingoes were busy feeding.

We quickly saw our first Marine Iguanas and red Sally Lightfoot Crabs, herons, and a few other types of birds.

After visiting the ponds, we arrived back at the main beach, which was now devoid of the Boobies and snorkelers who'd returned to their yachts already.

There was a sweet stillness to the beach at sunset. I was no longer in a hurry and could enjoy the moment.

The Breakdown

As the light faded, the pangas were dispatched to pick us up, and we passed our first pelican on the way back to the Eden Yacht.

Once onboard, the captain started up the engines, but we didn't seem to go anywhere.

Then, we noticed some of the crew on the pangas next to the boat. It was already dark, so something clearly wasn't right.

The more time that passed without us moving, the more obvious it became there was a serious problem.

Felipe told us we'd eat dinner first and have our briefing for the following day afterward (normally, the briefings happen before dinner). We all knew that was a stall tactic.

Either the crew was still trying to diagnose or fix the problem, or they needed time to figure out what to do with 16 paying passengers whose yacht just broke down on the first day of a week-long cruise.

Sunset in the Galapagos Islands

We continued to bond over our spaghetti dinner, after which we reconvened for the briefing.

Felipe, who looked young for his position as Galapagos nature guide, broke the news as we all held “welcome” cocktails.

The boat suffered a mechanical failure. And it wasn't something that could be fixed immediately.

He informed us that other 1st Class yachts were being contacted to see if they could take us.

The first boat offered up space for three of us — an older Italian couple, and Maya, an Israeli backpacker.

Only Maya would need to bunk with a man, which was not the normal protocol when pairing up single travelers on Galapagos cruises.

As they got their stuff together to be transferred, fear of the unknown set in with the rest of us.

Would they find another comparable yacht for us?

Would the new yacht have a similar, if not the same, itinerary as the Eden?

Many of us had chosen Eden specifically for its itinerary, which included far-flung Genovesa Island.

Time passed, and anxiety increased as we awaited Eden's Sales Manager, who was due to arrive on the yacht around 9 PM'ish to further address the situation with us.

Our cruise had barely begun, and we were already being forced to abandon ship.

I would've been more pissed off if it weren't for the others on the boat, many of whom maintained a steady stream of jokes to lighten the mood.

I gave them all credit for keeping their cool. Despite the high cost of a Galapagos cruise, not including the actual cost to reach Ecuador from the USA or Italy, everyone behaved maturely.

A little before 10 PM, Maya returned. Upon seeing the other boat, and her new room, complete with an older man sleeping in it, she refused to stay there and rejoined the rest of us.

Dining room on Eden Yacht

A little after 10 PM, the Sales Manager arrived on the Eden, looking very flustered. She recapped the situation; the boat suffered a mechanical accident that could not have been predicted.

It was not a reflection of poor maintenance (earlier in the year, the Eden underwent a three-month maintenance overhaul).

Somehow, the metal rod that connected one of the two motors to one of the two propellers had broken.

Of course, that was the bad news we already knew.

The good news was they'd come up with the best solution we all had been hoping for — transferring all of us to a new 1st Class yacht, Estrella del Mar, the following day.

The Estrella del Mar was a dive boat, and it wasn't scheduled with a tour, so it was undergoing routine maintenance.

I imagine Eden had to pay a pretty penny for this solution, not that we cared. But, I give them credit.

For it to work, they found an available boat of a similar class and worked out the charter with the owner, who then had to get a captain and crew together, prepare the boat, and stock it with food within about 12 to 14 hours.

There was no way around it. We had to accept the itinerary of the new yacht. The park service requires eight days to consider itinerary changes, even given extenuating circumstances.

We were losing a full day of our original itinerary, thereby missing Genovesa Island and the world's largest colony of Red Footed Boobies.

But there was nothing we could do, so humor and patience prevailed once again, and we all retired for the night.

Elevate Your Galapagos Adventure With a Luxe Yacht Stay in Darwin's Paradise

I n 2022, almost 268,000 tourists visited the Galapagos Islands. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ecuador's first national park, the Galapagos stretches across an expansive 8,000 square kilometers and 19 main islands. This pristine paradise, of which a staggering 97% is a protected area, is known for its unique and diverse wildlife, which inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

One of the best ways to view its natural wonders is onboard a superyacht, having the islands almost entirely to yourself and only crossing paths with other tourists less than a handful of times.

Climb aboard Aqua Expeditions' exquisitely appointed Aqua Mare . On the 163-foot yacht, as it meanders through the untouched splendor of the Galapagos Islands, you’re witness to an unspoiled Eden as exotic as it is breathtaking. It's the first superyacht to establish a permanent berth amidst the volcanic magnificence of the Galapagos archipelago.

Our adventure with Aqua Expeditions started when our plane arrived on Baltra Island in the Galapagos. Passengers booked on Aqua Mare were promptly whisked away to a VIP room where we relaxed while immigration checked our passports, and our guides for the week heartily welcomed us to the islands.

Indulgence Aboard the Aqua Mare

The Aqua Mare is a paradise in itself. The yacht’s multitude of luxury amenities cater to relaxation and rejuvenation. Its spacious upper deck houses a jacuzzi wherein guests can unwind under the celestial canvas of the Galapagos night sky.

Seven staterooms provide all the comforts of a five-star hotel. The sizable, nature-inspired interiors utilize neutral hues to evoke a beachy feel.

Avid readers and science lovers aboard can peruse the library’s offerings on local history, marine life, and Darwinism. Whether engaging in sunrise yoga sessions on the deck or savoring the sunset with a pisco sour, the Aqua Mare blends adventure and serenity for guests’ Galapagos sojourn.

The 16 crew members and two local guides provide a 1:1 staff-to-passenger ratio, promising personalization of every experience.

Shared experiences between passengers in the seven staterooms breed a convivial atmosphere, and holidaymakers quickly find themselves members of a new "family." The ship’s chefs serve exquisite Latin American fare starring the ocean's bounty. Each three-course meal ends with the pastry chef's beautifully sweet and visually stunning creations.

The Aqua Mare delights with its exciting culinary offerings and fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The menu caters to dietary restrictions and offers vegan options.

Exploring Galapagos' Exquisite Wildlife

The Aqua Mare's allure extends beyond the dining table. True to its name — which translates to “water of the seas” — the yacht offers numerous aquatic diversions to engage thrill-seekers and nature lovers. The adventurous itinerary features daily snorkeling sessions, stand-up paddleboarding excursions, and kayaking trips.

The Galapagos spectacle does not end with the aquatic experience; this luxury yacht vacation offers intimate access to the Islands' unparalleled terrestrial biodiversity. Every land excursion is a voyage back in time wherein guests can observe local wildlife as they remain uninterrupted by humans.

The two local guides aboard Aqua Mare offer expert commentary on the myriad creatures and flora guests encounter, including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, sea lions, and an orchestra of birds serenading onlookers.

The knowledgeable and passionate guides share the islands' history, geography, and wildlife trivia with guests while honoring the delicate ecosystem. Like the skilled Aqua Mare crew, the guides go above and beyond for guests.

Our two guides for the week, Federico Idrovo and Jaime Navas, were exceptional in their knowledge and enthusiasm. The former, Fede, is a musician who breathed life into the experience with his spot-on imitations of environmental sounds.

After days of watching the ecosystem foster reproduction and growth — blue-footed boobies performing mating dances, male frigates attempting their mating signal, and male land iguanas establishing their alpha ranks — Fede exclaimed that the intimate scenes were "another Galapagos moment."

We also observed stunning and peculiar vegetation, including Darwin's Daisy and prickly pear cactus forests. The jaw-dropping daily experiences gave my binoculars a workout and NatGeo a run for their money.

Fernandina's Surprise

In addition to the show-stopping wildlife, the islands are home to other wonders of nature, like Fernandina's active volcano.

Fernandina Island is the youngest and most volcanically active island in the archipelago, located in the western part of the archipelago. I was present for its eruption on April 12, after the most recent eruption began in March of this year.

The visiting passengers were not the only people awe-stricken by the sight; we could see the excitement from the crew of locals who had never witnessed such an eruption. The eruption was yet another reminder of just how alive this continually-evolving remote paradise is.

"Fernandina is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It has an eruption every four years, more or less, and it has long eruptions," shares Idrovo, our guide for the week. "Most of us, for the Galapagueños, it's quite hard to get so far away from our homes, so to see that eruption is something that is pretty special for us."

"We live in these islands; we are islanders. We grew up always hearing about these eruptions and the formation of the islands, so being in the right place at the right moment and having the chance to see that is very special for all of us."

It has been thrilling locals and visitors alike with its spectacular lava displays. After a full day of swimming with sea lions, penguins, tortoises, and marine iguanas, species endemic to the Galapagos, we were treated to a unique show in the evening during the eruption.

Set Sail on Your Private Adventure

This dynamic destination’s unparalleled natural spectacles mesmerize visitors. After a morning touring a new island by land or sea, followed by an exhilarating hour spent snorkeling in the Galapagos' real-life aquarium, guests will have worked up an appetite just in time to enjoy fresh Fish Carpaccio, Linguine ai Frutti di Mare, and tantalizing Passionfruit Suspiro.

After lunch, follow the mating dance steps of the blue-footed booby or use a zodiac to glide effortlessly through the mangroves and observe the widespread wildlife.

As sunset hues paint the sky, the stewards pour you a glass of wine. While you unwind, your guides brief you on adventures planned for the coming day. Nature sets the pace for potential plans.

As I pulled up to Baltra's airport to depart the Galapagos, a land iguana was sitting in the middle of the road, basking in the hot sun. An airport employee had to usher it back to the bushes at the side of the road. It was a fitting way to end an incredible vacation. As my guide Fede would say, it was just another Galapagos moment.

Before your luxurious yacht getaway to the Galapagos Islands, note changes to the islands' entry fees. From August 2024 onward, most foreign visitors will pay an entry fee of $200, doubling the current $100 fee. Fees for children under 12 will increase to $100 from $50, while kids under two remain exempt. Ecuadorian nationals will also see fees rise to $30 from $6.

Understand that these fees are one-off charges that cover a 60-day visa-free stay on the biodiverse islands. This increase marks the first price change since 1998.
