The Canary Islands archipelago is an Atlantic paradise made for exploration by boat. However, not all charters are the same, and such a beautiful destination needs an exceptional boat.

That’s why we took a guided cruise on one of Gran Canaria’s most exclusive vessels.

Operated by a Dutch and English husband and wife team, the gorgeous Afrikat Catamaran was a luxury cruise with remarkable attention to detail and outstanding hospitality, making it one of the best day excursions in the Canary Islands.

Best of all, the Afikat is affordable, accessible, and easy to book, making it easy to include a cruise as part of your holiday itinerary.

Amazing value day cruise from Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria

We sailed on the Afrikat as part of a day cruise that explored the southwest coastline, anchoring at the bay of “El Perchel”.

We booked the Afrikat via Jet2, but you can also book a cruise via most local hotels and leading excursion vendors.

For just €65 per person, we received:

• A return bus transfer 
• Drinks that included sangria, beer, non-alcoholic beverages, and delicious cocktails.
• A 10-min speedboat ride with the Captain
• The option to book discounted watersports like jet skis, parasailing, and a fun donut ride
• Snorkelling

It really was an all-inclusive package , lasting over 6 hours in total with our bus transfers. 

Afrikat: The boat

We sailed aboard the Afrikat 69, a newish 21-meter catamaran, built in 2017 in Valencia.

This impressive boat was actually designed by the Afrikat team and offers a layout that is wheelchair accessible, navigable, and comfortable for all who sail on her.

In fact, the Afrikat is award-winning and has received accolades from:

• The Cabildo de Gran Canaria
• The Canary Award

And I have to say, we were IMPRESSED!

The boat had three levels that were perfect for guests to enjoy the very best of the cruise, wherever they were on it.

We were able to chill out on the luxury sundeck which had plenty of space for lounging, sunbathing, and taking in the sights of the coastline as we cruised.

We also regularly popped into the main deck interior salon where the bar, cocktail machine, and food were located.

It appeared to have seating for around 30 people so it could be a great charter for events.

We also explored the swimming access sun deck and went up to the fly-bridge sundeck, just behind the captain!

The Afrikat Catamaran crew 

At the helm of this impressive vessel are Potter and Wendie Grobben, joint CEOs and lead captain and operations director of the Afrikat respectively. It really is a family-owned operation!

Wendie has had a remarkable career in tourism, previously working for TUI, while Captain Potter’s renowned seamanship takes you to some of the most exclusive waters of the southwest of Gran Canaria.

This multi-lingual, adventure-loving couple took over in 2011, and have turned this impressive vessel into one of Gran Canaria’s most successful cruises.

They are supported by an international team of experienced captains, deckhands, and guides who will be delighted to show you the best of the Mediterranean. For every cruise, a three-man crew will be on hand to assist you. 

Afrikat excursions available

The Afrikat departs for either morning or afternoon cruises daily.

There are four types of cruises available, which each offer all-inclusive travel and hospitality:

1. Morning cruise on the Afrikat, Gran Canaria     

Morning cruises on the Afrikat take place at either 9:30 or 10 am, departing from Puerto Rico and lasting about 4 ½ hours on the water.

The cruise is very relaxed as you head into the Atlantic Ocean and roam the coast in amazingly sunny weather.

We took in sights that included the Port of Mogan, a beautiful fishing village with quaint cottages, and the magnificent volcanic cliffs, coves, and rock formations nearby. 

Our destination was El Perchel, where the Afrikat was anchored. This idyllic bay was initially secluded but soon filled with yachts and charter vessels as the day wore on.

The water was relatively clear, but there was some evidence of pollution and littering, probably due to the number of boats that pass through these waters.

Once anchored, you can try out any of the following activities onboard or at sea:

• A thrilling 10-minute speedboat ride with the Captain 
• Watersports like jet skis, parasailing, and a cool donut ride (for an additional fee)

It was great that comprehensive watersports and snorkeling equipment was provided, making it easy to travel-light on the day.

If you prefer, you can just lay back and lounge in the Canarian sun on the clean and comfortable sun cushions provided on all decks.

There were also opportunities to enjoy beautiful wildlife, with dolphin spotting, fish feeding, and observing crabs.

The crew is really knowledgeable about the coastline and happy to answer any questions you may have.

2. Afternoon cruise on the Afrikat, Gran Canaria   

A summer afternoon is perfect for enjoying the Afrikat, especially as temperatures gradually become bearable while you are out on the water and you don’t have to get up super early.

The itinerary is similar to the morning cruise but you’ll be heading over to the El Perchel bay at 2:30 pm and returning to port by 7 pm. 

3. Afrikat cruises with music!    

Another cool aspect of travel aboard the Afrikat is their cruises with music.

The boat has a resident saxophonist, Ashleigh, who will get you in the party mood with a jazzy performance that really complements the stunning scenery.

If you want a live music cruise, you must specifically book the Friday morning cruises.

4. Transfers from across Gran Canaria

We were staying in Maspalomas and received an inclusive transfer to and from the Afrikat.

Transfers are also available from the following resort towns on the island:

• Bahia Feliz
• Arguineguin
• Playa del Inglés
• Playa del Cura

Delicious catering onboard the Afrikat Catamaran

We thought that the inclusive provision of food onboard the Afrikat made our trip amazing value for money.

Everyone could partake of a hearty tapas-style buffet that was served while anchored at El Perchel. The crew served a real feast which we washed down with plentiful free sangria.

We even treated ourselves to one of the giant cocktails being served.

Another great thing about the food and drink was the use of edible drinking straws and souvenir drinking glasses that were provided to each customer.

The Afrikat team believes in sustainable tourism and avoiding single-use plastics that pollute our oceans. 

Accessible, wheelchair-friendly boat tours on the Afrikat

The Afrikat catamaran has been specifically designed to be wheelchair-friendly.

There is disabled access throughout the boat, including its boarding, sundeck, salon, and toilet.

If you or one of your party are wheelchair users, this is an important benefit of cruising with the Afrikat.

Events onboard the Afikat

This well-equipped boat is perfect for hosting events like weddings, conferences, and team training sessions. The vessel is so versatile that it can be set up for a bespoke event.

What should I bring to the Afrikat Catamaran?

With everything included, you only need to bring yourself!

However, the Afrikat Catamaran crew advise that you carry swimwear and a towel, sun protection, your own snorkel, and money for the watersport activities and purchasing souvenirs. 

Are watersports on the Afrikat free?

No. Watersports like jet skis, paragliding and the cute donut ride are not free, but prices are at least 50% cheaper than you would pay to a land-based watersports provider. 

I am not near any of the pick-up points. Can I still get a transfer to and from the Afrikat?

If you are really keen to board the Afrikat, bespoke hotel transfers can be arranged by the team for an additional fee.

Charter a boat in gran canaria.

You prefer a more private ambiance and are considering traveling Gran Canaria or exploring the waters between the Canary Islands on a Yacht Charter Gran Canaria. Or maybe you would just love to relax on a skippered charter and purely enjoy nice time on the Atlantic. But if you are longing for something really luxurious, you can spoil yourself with a crewed charter.

On Gran Canaria you will be able to find different variations of a boat or a yacht charter. In order to help you finding out what type of charter to consider for yourself and which requirements to bring, we have compiled the following information for you.

Bareboat Charter Gran Canaria -You are the Skipper

Bareboat charter means you only rent the boat or the sailing yacht itself. This means that you are the captain and responsible for the ship, the passengers and the organization of the journey. There is no professional skipper and crew available. As the skipper, you will have to set the procedures on board and take care of navigation, sailing, mooring, anchoring, refueling and possibly cleaning the boat. This also means that you are liable for any damage incurred during the trip. Make sure that the charter company can provide an insurance if you do not have one yourself. If the charter company has no insurance on offer it is strongly advised to change it.

When chartering the bareboat the charterers will require the corresponding qualifications – this is for your own safety – such as a boat driver’s license and usually the ICC. ICC means “International Certificate of Competence” and that certifies you have already demonstrated your ability to operate a ship in international waters. This ICC certificate also implies proof of First Aid and VHF communication skills. Spain doesn’t belong to the countries that have officially recognized the  ICC certificate , but most local charterers accept it as proof of your suitability, and in case the charter company does not accept the ICC certificate, your skills will be tested by a certified company on site.

Skippered Charter Gran Canaria – A Skipper is There

If you do not have the licenses to run a boat, then the skippered charter comes into consideration. Here you hire a skipper with the boat. He then carries the overall responsibility and thus has the “command authority” on board. Your wishes and ideas certainly have priority, in this type of charter, but in case of doubt and in dangerous situations, the skipper has the last word that you as a passenger have to obey.

A boat charter with skipper can be worthwhile even if you are an experienced skipper with all licenses. Because it also allows you to relax during your sailing vacation and at the same time learn and acquire new skills from the professional. In addition, the skipper knows the waters in which you are well which makes him an ideal companion on your private boat trip.

Remember that the skipper is entitled to his own cabin and food on board. The cost for a skipper is approximately 90 EUR to 150 EUR per day. Most times you can book the skipper and the boat in one complete package.

Crewed Charter – Charter Gran Canaria All Inclusive

The ultimate luxury vacation on the sea is when you get pampered by a full crew on your privately chartered ship. The accompanying team normally consists of the skipper, a cook and a hostess. While the skipper ensures the proper progress on board and brings you to the different destinations of your choice safe and sound, the chef is responsible for providing you with (regional) delicacies at all times. The procurement of the necessary drinks and food, same as the preparation and serving, the washing up and the cleanliness of the galley are also duty of the cook. The hostess will take care of any further concerns that will make your turn on the sea a true luxury vacation. You will be served, your laundry will be washed, your cabins cleaned and much more. But they are equipped with all conceivable equipment and modern tracking technology to go hunting for big and small fish. There are two skippers who make sure that you can fully concentrate on the fun part. One manages the boat; while the other introduces you into deep-sea fishing and assists you in case of a giant catch.

Excursion Charter Gran Canaria – A Boat Tour Just For You

In Gran Canaria you can enjoy many day or half-day trips on yachts and sailboats, for example the  Yacht Charter Puerto de Mogan . And again, there is the possibility to rent a boat for such a trip exclusively for you. The nature and extent of the work is agreed in advance with the skipper or the charter company. But cabin charter also means renting a single cabin on a boat against a fee. You then travel together with third parties. The skipper is also responsible for everything here.

Where Can You Charter Boats in Gran Canaria

Las Palmas has the largest marina by far in Gran Canaria. With more than 1,360 berths for yachts up to 50 meters in length and 5 meters draft, it is one of the most important and largest of its kind in Europe. But some so-called Puertos Deportivos (sports harbors) can also be found in the south of the island, close to Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas. The largest marinas in the south can be found in Puerto Rico and Pasito Blanco. But there are also smaller marinas in Arguineguin, Anf del Mar and Puerto de Mogán. Another one is located in Agaete, in the northwest of Gran Canaria. Smaller and larger charterers are located in these marinas. Among all these charterers you are alomst guaranteed to find the right boat and the desired type of charter.

Charter Costs

The cost depends on the size, type and condition of the boat. Simple and small sailing yachts tend to be cheaper than catamarans or a motor yacht. Decisive is also whether you want to charter with or without a skipper or a crew. The prices for a multi-day charter in Gran Canaria can vary between 1.000 and 40.000 EUR per week! It is also possible to Charter boats for some hours in a day of course. The prices here vary between 400 and 3,000 EUR. Fishing charters are available from 400 to 800 EUR. The 5 Star Boat sails every day from 10:00 - 14:00. Transport/Hotel pick up is included from all resorts in the South of Gran Canaria. Hotel pick ups are from 09:00 - 09:45 depending which hotel and resort you are staying in.

You board the boat at Puerto Rico harbour and from here, you will cruise along the beautiful coastline of Gran Canaria. You board the boat at Puerto Rico Harbour and from here, you will cruise along to amazing music from the DJ, passing the beatiful coastline of Gran Canaria.

Booked this trip yesterday and upgraded to VIP bed.. brilliant from start to finish.. Staff were superb and it really is 5 ⭐️. Free banana boat ride and jetski and paragliding and jet snorkelling for a small extra fee but well worth doing as it’s all top class. There is a sunset trip too which is what I did and seeing sun setting coming back made the trip even better.. others might look for you Togo with them , but if you want the best get the best.. Is return transport included?

Yes return transport is included from the main tourist resorts in Gran Canaria including Playa del ingles, Maspalomas, Amadores, San Agustin, Bahia Feliz, Taurito and Puerto Mogan. We don't pick up in Puerto Rico as the boat departs from the main port in Puerto Rico. Pick up times are from 09:00am - 09:45 depending on where you are staying all this will be confirmed in your booking confirmation email as soon as you have booked.

How do we book a trip?

You choose the tour you want to do click book now and choose your desired date and reserve your place on the trip with a small deposit. This will hold your place on your chosen excursion until the day of the tour the remaining balance you pay on the day of the trip by cash or card.

How far in advance should I book a tour?

We recommend that you book your Gran Canaria excursions as far in advance as possible, in order to guarantee your trip and day of your choice. Some Excursions will fill up quicker than others, for example; Boat Trips, Jeep Safari’s and Buggy Tours fill up very quickly as they have a limited capacity. It also depends on the time of year that you are travelling to Gran Canaria, as some months are much busier than others.

What happens once I book?

As soon as you book you will shorty receive an email confirmation and Text/SMS, confirming your excursion date and time of your pick up and confirmation of the deposit received if you havn’t received your confirmation please firstly check your email spam folder, just in case. If you don’t receive it within 15 minutes, please contact us and we will send it manually to you.

Do I need to print out my email confirmation?

For all of the excursions, it is sufficient to show the email confirmation or Text/SMS on your phone. If you want to print out the confirmation you are more than welcome to.

Do I need to bring my Passport or ID?

For activities such as Quad biking and Buggy tours and self drive Jeep tours, proof of age is required, as is a full driving license (card, not paper license) so please bring both documents for these trips.

What is the refund policy?

Deposit reservations are non-refundable. In the event of a trip or activity being cancelled, we will try to transfer you on to the next available trip. However, if for any reason this is not possible you will be issued a full refund.

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Zefira is the largest vessel crafted by Fitzroy Yachts to date. The Dubois designed vessel was built to exceptional quality levels which continue the yards reputation for building award winning superyachts. Powered by a Caterpillar C32 1450 bhp main engine and a Hundested variable pitch propeller, the propulsion system provides long range motor sailing abilities. The 56 meter ‘light weight’ carbon fiber sailing rig was supplied by Southern Spars, and the sails inventory provided by North Sails.

Ma solo in pochi sono riusciti ad accorgersi della sua presenza in porto, che è durata giusto una mattinata . “ Zefira ”, imbarcazione di 50 metri vincitrice dei prestigiosi riconoscimenti internazionali “Show boats Design Award 2011” e di “World Superyacht Awards 2011” come miglior yacht a vela del mondo per il 2011, è rimasta attraccata presso la banchina Bengasi del molo Cortese di Vibo Marina per poche ore, impegnata in attività di bunkeraggio.
