Snorkeling In Costa Maya: A Guide To The Best Spots And Tours

September 21, 2022

Alex C. Huhn

' title=

Costa Maya is a beautiful snorkeling destination located on the east coast of Mexico. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Caribbean Sea while snorkeling among colorful reefs and marine life. Costa Maya is known for its clear water and abundance of marine life, making it a popular spot for snorkelers of all levels. There are many snorkeling tour operators in Costa Maya, so it is easy to find a tour that fits your budget and schedule. Most snorkeling tours include all of the necessary equipment, so all you need to bring is your swimsuit and towel.

Visiting the Costa Maya snorkeling area is only a short drive away from Mahahual Beach. This area is a critical breeding ground for many tropical fish species and a rich source of marine biological diversity. The tour does not provide accessible transportation. Applicants must be at least six years old to participate. A great leader and guide, who observed a variety of unusual items (shells, moray eels, starfish, and so on). I also enjoy a good set of tools. Customer service: Jodi Johnson.

I was thoroughly impressed by the assistance and guidance provided by this exceptional guide. On January 10, 2020, I will mark the occasion. The guide was fantastic, and the performance of the team was exemplary.

Costa Rica has one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines, a plethora of coral reefs , volcanic beaches, and pristine forests that tumble into the sea, making it one of the best dive and snorkel destinations.

The Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is located on the southern Caribbean coast . The Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, which is located on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica, is widely regarded as one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the country. A coral reef, a small bay, an inlet, or an island is an ideal habitat for marine life.

Is Costa Maya Good For Snorkeling?

power catamaran costa maya

Costa Maya is a fantastic snorkeling destination . Even if you are not a marine biologist, you will definitely enjoy this trip due to the abundance of marine wildlife.

Xcalak Reef National Marine Park is a part of the Meso-American Barrier Reef system, and it is a highly protected area. With some of the most beautiful dive sites on the Yucatan peninsula, visitors to the area can enjoy the pristine marine environment without the crowds that can be found in more developed areas. Within a ten-minute boat plan, there are spectacular dives up to -60 meters above sea level at altitudes of -15 to -60 meters along the coast of Costa Maya due to the distinct coastal and underwater scenery of the area. Because of the long season and the climate, it is particularly advantageous to engage in diving activities for a full year at sea. IVE LIFE is a family-owned business with honest and personalized services. The preservation of the reef and the quality of education are two of our top priorities. We at the hotel always go the extra mile for our customers in order to make their stay in Costa Maya as pleasant as possible.

Does Costa Rica Have Good Snorkeling?

Yes, Costa Rica has good snorkeling ! The water is clear and there are plenty of fish to see.

Costa Rica is one of the world’s most biodiverse countries. The waters are clear, blue, and calm, making it an ideal location for snorkeling. Costa Rica is home to over 7000 different types of marine life. Snorkeling and scuba diving can be done at a variety of Costa Rican locations. On the Caribbean coast, it is one of the most popular snorkel spots . The island is located off Flamingo Bay in Guanacaste and is famous for its volcanic rock formations that attract marine life. Turtles, sharks, and even humpback whales can be seen in the water off Ca*o Island.

What Fish Do You See Snorkeling In Costa Rica?

Sea turtles, whales, dolphins, coral reefs, moray eels, sharks, and brightly colored tropical fish are just a few of the animals and fish found in Costa Rica. Over 700 marine species can be found throughout Costa Rica. Many of the tropical fish, including butterflyfish, parrotfish, puffs, and barracudas, can be found in the United States.

Snorkeling In Tamarindo: A Beginner’s Guide

There is no doubt that snorkeling in crystal-clear waters with such a diverse range of fish is a fantastic experience. If you’re new to the sport, we recommend taking our beginner snorkel tour first to get a taste of what it’s like. Furthermore, a day at the beach in Tamarindo with friends or family is a fantastic way to spend time together. Diving around Tamarindo can be both exciting and relaxing, as you explore the coral reefs and find some of the world’s most fascinating marine life. Snorkeling has one advantage over other water activities: you do not need any special equipment, only your swimming gear and snorkel.

Is There Good Snorkeling On The Pacific Side Of Costa Rica?

The Gulf of Papagayo, Guanacaste is a popular snorkeling , kayaking, and boat tour destination because it is surrounded by a number of protected bays and inlets. The Calzon de Pobre and Playa Penca are both excellent places to learn to snorkel along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.

A Natural Snorkeling Experience In Costa Rica

The clear water and abundant coral reefs make this a pleasurable and peaceful experience . Because of the abundance of colorful fish and other marine life on the reefs, diving nearby is an enjoyable activity for anyone interested in diving. Costa Rica’s coastal waters provide an excellent opportunity to snorkel while on vacation.

Does Playa Del Carmen Have Good Snorkeling?

With its close proximity to some of the world’s most magnificent coral reefs, the Caribbean is an ideal location for snorkeling and diving.

Snorkeling off the coast of Playa del Carmen is a fantastic activity. Snorkeling from the beach to the reef takes about an hour, and there is a reef near where boats park. Cenotes are formed when limestone is eroded by ground water , resulting in a pool of water. Because of their clear water, the visibility is excellent for snorkelers in most cenotes. Snorking on the reef off of Puerto Morelos is a well-known activity. Fat Cat Catamarans depart from Puerto Aventuras and travel up the coast in a 45 foot boat. There are also tours available for a half-day excursion here.

There is a 65-foot catamaran capable of sailing from Puerto Aventuras to the Tulum Reef. After swimming, you can take a lunch of steak or lobster on this tour. The Xel Ha inlet is a body of water in the ocean that is fed by fresh water from the ground. Snorkeling in the Yal Ku Lagoon and the Isla Mujeres is a great option for snorkelers. When you arrive on the island, you can easily book snorkeling tours with a local guide. If you’re planning to stay here for a week or more and want to purchase your own equipment, Playa Del Carmen is relatively simple.

The Best Snorkeling In Mexico: Maui, Hawaii

There are several snorkeling areas in Playa del Carmen, but the majority of the coast is devoid of much to see. It is located south of Playacar. There is only one way to get to the end of the beach, where it becomes rocky and swims out. Mexico’s best snorkeling spot is in Maui, Hawaii. It’s no surprise that Maui is a popular family vacation spot because of its numerous white sands, sheltered coves, and crystal-clear water. You can snorkel around the island, but don’t miss a trip to the Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve.

Scuba Diving In Costa Maya

Costa Maya is a beautiful place to go scuba diving. The water is clear and there are plenty of fish to see. There are also a few shipwrecks in the area that are fun to explore. The only downside to scuba diving in Costa Maya is that it can be a bit crowded.

Diving on the Mayan Reef is available at Costa Maya Scuba Diving. The Beginner Course will cover everything you’ll need to know to dive at depths ranging from 5 to 30 feet, and you’ll spend about an hour learning everything you’ll need to know. The course will take you on a magical underwater adventure. This tour does not require a large deposit at the time of booking. We do not charge you in advance; instead, you must pay in full. No port, no pay policy, please. If your cruise ship does not dock in Costa Maya or does not stop for any reason, you will be compensated 100% of the original purchase price.

The Best Dive Sites In Costa Maya

What are the best dive sites in Costa Maya? Among the most amazing features of diving in Costa Maya is its abundance of marine life. It is especially advantageous to engage in diving activities for a full year in a climate and sea environment that is both pleasant and safe. The Great Mayan Reef , the Progreso Marine Park, and the Blue Hole are three of the best dive sites in Costa Maya.

Costa Maya Reef Snorkeling January

Costa Maya reef snorkeling is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The reef is full of colorful fish and other marine life that can be seen up close when snorkeling. January is a great time to visit Costa Maya, as the weather is warm and the water is calm.

LaChilangaloense provides a Costa Maya Reef Snorkeling Excursion as well as a Beach Day at the beach. If you can’t find a good deal, you can always take advantage of the low price guarantee. The date and time are required. Staying in your seat and keeping your options open is the best way to secure your spot. You are free to take this tour and activity. The only ones who will be participating are those who have been assigned to the group. If you want to get a full refund, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the experience begins.

The water was choppy, but the snorkeling was excellent. We appreciated the vendors because we didn’t want to leave, despite having a large number of them. If you ask for Mexican champagne, you’ll be fine. It was a lot better than expected to dive on the reef, and it looked fantastic. Drinks at the Beach club were delicious, but they did not appear to contain any alcohol. We had a great experience at the hotel, but were told our time was up at 2 p.m. and that we would have to leave. We’ll snorkel and drink at a beach location with drinks for two hours.

It was a little difficult to find the location, but the locals made it all work out. Because the ocean was too rough for snorkeling, the hotel provided us with more food and an open bar. Our server went above and beyond in order for us to be as comfortable as possible.

The Best Time To Visit Costa Rica For Snorkeling

Because Costa Rica has a lot of coastline, it’s an ideal place to snorkel and see whales migrate. The best times to visit the area are during the dry season, which lasts from December to mid-April, when visibility is usually excellent. It is best to leave early in the dry season. During the rainy season, which lasts from May to early December, some areas along the coast can become difficult to snorkel due to rainy weather and subsequent runoff.

With its pristine beaches, lush jungles, and ancient Mayan ruins, it’s not surprising that it has become a favorite spot for visitors from all over the world.

However, there are so many amazing things to do in this Caribbean port that you may not know where to start!

From visiting stunning archaeological sites to swimming with dolphins in crystal-clear waters, there are plenty of activities that will make your time here unforgettable.

So if you’re looking for an exciting and enjoyable cruise experience, read on as we explore some of the best things to do in Costa Maya Mexico and the surrounding areas!

Best Things to do while in Costa Maya Cruise Port

Historical sites in costa maya.

Costa Maya, like many areas in this area, is rich in Mayan History . While you are in port, you might consider exploring these ancient ruins and learning more about their culture.

We visited Altun Ha in Belize and it was a wonderful experience. Even my kids enjoyed exploring the ruins.

1. Chacchoben

power catamaran costa maya

If you’re looking for a unique experience, head to the nearby Chacchoben Ruins. These impressive ruins are just a short drive away from the cruise port and will let you explore some of the ancient temples and artifacts that were left behind by the Mayans hundreds of years ago.

Chacchoben Ruins are about 50 minute drive from the cruise port, so it’s best to take a tour.

This is one of the most popular tours of Chacchoben. It includes air-conditioned transportation to the ruins and a guide to point out all of the highlights and has a “back to the ship” guarantee.

➡️ Book a Tour to Chacchoben Here

2. Kohunlich Ruins

Kohunlich Ruins

Kohunlich Ruins are some of the oldest Mayan ruins in Costa Maya and make for an interesting day trip.

This archaeological site features various plazas and structures, as well as large masks carved into stone.

You can also find hieroglyphs throughout the area that tell a story about this ancient culture.

Kohunlich is about two hours from the cruise port, so it’s best to take a tour.

This Kohunlich shore excursion will include round-trip transportation by air-conditioned coach and an expert guide who will provide all the information you need about this fascinating archaeological site.

➡️ Book This Kohunlich Ruins Tour

3. Fuerte San Felipe, Bacalar

Fuerte San Felipe, Bacalar

Fort Bacalar is an amazing place to visit when you are in Costa Maya. It was built over 250 years ago and has stories of pirates, Mayans, and Spanish settlers.

It is full of history and secrets that you can explore while there.

➡️ Book a Bacalar Tour Here

Beaches in Costa Maya

If you don’t want to take a history tour, that’s ok, because there is still plenty more to do in Costa Maya.

If you are looking for a day in the sun and warm Caribbean sea, check out these beaches near the Costa Maya Cruise Port:

4. Mahahual Beach

Mahahual Beach

Mahahual Beach is a great spot for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing. With its white sand and crystal-clear water, this beach will make you feel like you’re in paradise. Plus, there are plenty of restaurants and bars along the beach for when you need to take a break

This is the closest beach to the cruise port, and therefore is definitely the most crowded, so if you are looking for isolation or peace and quiet, this isn’t the beach for me. If you take a tour while in port, you will likely end up at Mahaual Beach at the end of your tour.

5. Maya Chan Beach

Costa Maya Cruise Port

Book a day at Maya Chan and you won’t regret it – despite being the farthest beach away from the Costa Maya cruise port, this beach’s top-rated option provides plenty of activities to make up for it.

You have to book a reservation at Maya Chan similar to a shore excursion and they will reserve a cabana for you.

The Maya Chan team will collect you at the port and take you back when it’s time to depart, a journey of approximately 20 minutes.

Relax and soak up the sun in your own private cabana, complete with two comfortable chairs, a bed, and even a hammock. Plus – they will deliver delicious food and drinks right to you! (Chips, salsa, Guacamole, Rum punch).

Indulge in an impressive taco buffet for lunch, and enjoy a selection of specialty drinks from the bar all day long!

The beach’s staff works diligently to ensure that the seagrass is cleared from the shoreline, thus allowing you to take full advantage of the beach. If you prefer, you can hang out in their freshwater pool.

They also have kayaks, snorkel gear, and floating beach mats for use and will deliver you drinks by kayak while you are in the water.

6. YaYa Beach

Maya Chan Beach

YaYa Beach is a great spot if you want to get away from it all. The secluded beach is located in the Punta Laguna Nature Reserve, and there are no crowds here.

You can enjoy snorkeling , kayaking, swimming, or just relaxing under one of the many palapas on the shoreline. It’s a great spot to enjoy the Caribbean sunshine and nature!

Just a 10-minute ride away from the cruise port, Yaya beach is readily accessible via taxi or shuttle for around $4 per person to and from Costa Maya.

One drawback to this beach option is the numerous local vendors trying to sell things to you throughout the day.

You can purchase a day pass for YaYa Beach with different options with a $5 deposit.

7. Seven Colors Lagoon

Also known as Bacalar Lagoon, the Seven Colors Lagoon is a must-see for those looking for something truly unique. The Mayans called this place Siyan Ka’an Bakjalal, which means “place surrounded by reeds where the sky is born.”

It’s said that there are seven distinct shades of blue in the water, from deep-sea indigo to sunset violet.

This amazing sight can be reached by boat, taking approximately 25 minutes from the Costa Maya port. Here you can snorkel, swim, and explore the different colors of the lagoon.

You can also take a tour with a guide or rent a kayak to explore the area on your own. Make sure to bring plenty of sun protection and snacks!

➡️ Book a Tour to Seven Colors Lagoon by clicking here

8. Pez Quadro Beach Club

Bacalar

To experience one of the most beautiful beaches in Mahahual, take advantage of this day pass to gain access and revel in the Pez Quadro Beach Club, located at 40 Cañones Hotel.

In addition to your day of beachside bliss, get exclusive access to a complimentary open bar and 1-course lunch, luxury lounge chairs, sparkling bathrooms, and showers, plus Wi-Fi.

➡️ Book A Day Pass at Pez Quadro Beach Club with no deposit necessary

Water Activities near Costa Maya Cruise Port

9. Free Swimming Pool

Just like Grand Turk , at the cruise port, you can swim in a large saltwater pool at no cost. There is music, food, drinks, and a lively atmosphere to enjoy without leaving the port.

It is a great place for cruise passengers to hang out for the day, and you can either lounge in a beach chair or order drinks from the swim-up bar.

10 Dolphin Discovery

Dolphin Discovery

If you are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, check out Dolphin Discovery. The facility offers the opportunity to swim with dolphins and explore the natural beauty of Costa Maya.

With the Maya Chan team’s expertise, visitors can learn about local marine life, enjoy a variety of delicious food and drinks, and relax and soak up the sun in hammocks on the beach.

At Dolphin Discovery , visitors can take part in Dolphin Encounter, Royal Swim, and Special Swims activities. Guests will also receive exclusive access to a private beach and lagoon where they can relax after swimming with dolphins.

Most of the snorkeling off the beach is on small  dive boats or maybe a ship excursion on a larger power boat.  Check Island Marketing or Shore excursions sites to see what, if anything they offer. I believe  Island Marketing had a small sailing cat that went out at one time.  But never seen the larger cats like in Roatan or Cozumel.

Catamaran snorkel tour

This was a great tour. It started at the end of the pier, with greetings from two pirates, who are your guides. We then boarded a very nice bus for 20 min ride to the dock where the Catamaran was docked. We boarded, had a very entertaining trip out to reef, and then had 50 min in the water. They divided the snorkelers into experience based groups and took us out on a guided tour of the reef. The guide was very good at pointing out lobsters, rays, flounders, and grouper to us. In addition we saw a huge school of tiger rays. It was fabulous. Then we got back on board and the bar was open. Again the pirates entertained us while en route back to the dock. Great trip.

This was an excursion available on the cruise ship. We We’re on a 12 day cruise ,and this ATV adventure was a blast !. One of the most fun things we did. It rained the morning before we started out ,and we were covered in mud when we came back. Everyone was smiling ear to ear upon return. The tour operators were fantastic.

Our Trip started off with a tour of Mayan ruins in Chacchoben. Enjoyed learning about history of Mayan culture. Our tour guide, Juan Carlos, did an excellent job explaining the rituals and mysteries of the Mayan people. We then traveled to the Seven Colors Lagoon in Bacalar where we took a pontoon out on the water. This is a fresh water lake that looks like you are in caribbean water. Seven colors relate to the many different depths this lake has to offer. Truly a unique lake and a must see. What made this excursion even better was our tour guide- Juan Carlos. One of the nicest people you will ever meet! All the staff of Costa Maya Adventures were excellent in making this a great day!

We bought this tour online before leaving Canada. The directions given were correct; the divers were at the correct spot waiting for us. We were taken to a good spot on the coral reef; the water was ~5 feet deep and extremely clear and calm. I was given flippers and a mask with a breather. When I went over the side, the water was warm and felt very nice on the body. The trip was above expectations.

Costa Maya Cruise Tips, Activities, and Overview

Food and drink in costa maya.

Several bars and restaurants are located within the port village. Within Mahahual, it's easy to find menus with the standard Mexican favorites, such as guacamole, chips and pico de gallo, and tacos. A growing Italian population means that many of the hotels serving food are influenced by Italy, offering more European dining choices. By the Port:  Fancy a little Mexican wrestling with your nachos? Cantina Latina is a cheerful, open-air restaurant in the village that features playful Lucha Libre-style wrestling matches in a center ring. In Mahahual:  The shrimp tacos and seafood at  Nohoch Kay , located at the far end of the malecon, are considered the best in town. American Steve Uhl, owner of  Tropicante,  has built a following among cruisers for the complimentary loungers he reserves ahead of time for his Tex-Mex restaurant's guests -- no minimum required. Expect the standard tacos, enchiladas and burritos.

For a varied menu, including breakfast for early port calls, try  Pez Quadro , the restaurant and lounge on the malecon affiliated with 40 Canones, a hotel owned by an expat Italian. Locals and crewmembers also love  Luna de Plata , which is a little removed from the strip, with a quieter beach and a full menu of Italian and seafood dishes.

Beaches in Costa Maya

Best for Relaxing: It's a little bit of a drive from the port -- about 20 minutes -- but the beach outside Almaplena Eco Beach Resort is not only far from Mahahual's madding crowd, it lacks the sea grass that is prevalent on the main strip. This resort offers all-inclusive day-pass pricing for cruisers.

Best for Active Types: Owned by the port, the Jungle Beach Club on Uvero Beach is the center of cruise line shore excursions, so if you've booked an activity or beach day through the ship, chances are you'll end up here. The enclosure that once housed the dolphin show has now become an artificial reef, so even if you aren't on an official snorkeling excursion, you can rent a mask and see the fish that flock here.

Best for Kids: A natural reef protects the beach in Mahahual, making it shallow and kid-friendly, although the water can be murky. Of the many all-inclusive beach clubs, Maya Chan receives props for organizing kid-friendly activities, such as scavenger hunts, kayaking and snorkeling tours. Transportation is provided with the price, which varies depending on age level.

Don't Miss in Costa Maya

Water activities: The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs through Costa Maya, and shore excursions aimed at getting you out to see the coral and fish include diving, snorkeling or kayaking in a glass-bottom kayak. Or, you can plop down at a local beach club and rent your own equipment, or go parasailing.

Jungle activities: If you've had enough of the water, why not go into the jungle on an ATV? Actually, you don't have to choose. Most activities that head into the jungle include some time at a beach club to chill.

Maya Water Park: Costa Maya has a water park called Maya, the Lost Mayan Kingdom, complete with waterslides, ziplines and a lazy river attraction. It's bookable as a shore excursion through your cruise line, and is a fun option for families. The park is about a 10 minute walk from the cruise pier, and there is also a trolley that runs between the pier and the park.

Pyramids: Several Mayan pyramids are within driving distance from Costa Maya. Chacchoben is the best known, and it's only an hour away. Other ruins that lie further afield include Kohunlich and Dzibanche. You'll want to make sure you're ready for a long bus ride if you choose these options.

Massages: If the ship's spa prices are too high for you, then Costa Maya is the place to get your fix, at much lower prices. There's a spa called Mayan Healing Rituals within the port area; prices for a 50-minute massage start at $55. Or, go really cheap and get a massage on the beach from one of the many vendors in Mahahaul. What you sacrifice in privacy, you save in money -- we were able to get a lovely 40-minute massage for a mere $20. Paying cash here is best.
