Barry Antonius, Redboine Boat Club Commodore for many years, has passed away. Here is a link to his obituary;

https://www.arbormemorial.ca/gleneden/obituaries/barry-stephen-antonius/79995

Barry was Commodore when I joined the club and I would see him regularly on the back of his big boat at the centre of the outside dock.

Redboine Boat Club Winnipeg Docks

The last few years his boat has not been in its slip but I have had the pleasure of saying hello when he stopped by to visit. Barry did us the great service of taking charge and caring for the club for so many seasons.

Thank you Barry, farewell.

Season Recap 2021

28 Sunday Nov 2021

Summer on the river in 2021 turned out to be a long warm season defined by the closing and opening of the locks at Lockport. With so little rain, the level of the river was consistently near normal and the river never did flow strongly. The lack of current added to the growth on ours boat hulls and the docks, so cleanup was a a bigger job than usual. Our new electric power washer helped with that.

The pandemic restrictions kept the clubhouse mostly closed but as the restrictions eased up people were able to meet on the docks and I hear there was some fairly regular barbecues on the weekends.

The lost revenue from being unable to rent out our space was lessened by income from a movie shoot on our site. The movie production painted the garage a green colour that has not been appreciated and there are plans to cover it up next year.

There are a few activities making use of our river access this winter as well. A curling tournament and a company that harvests ice will be using our ramp in the upcoming months.

Well they are not quite ‘in’ yet, but the task of assembling and attaching the docks is nearly complete and on May 31st members will be parking their boats on the water.

redboine yacht club

Thanks to everyone who helped put this together. There are a number of new members this year who I am sure are ready to get out there. Everyone is excited to have a place to go in this time of lockdowns but we do need to follow the current health regulations so the socializing will have to wait.

Summer on the river is wonderful, let’s get started.

1959 Busy Summer of Activities for Redboine

20 Saturday Mar 2021

boating , Cruise , Red River , Ronds , Winnipeg boating Redboine history

This post jumps forward slightly with the Free Press articles to 1959. The previous two years had articles about the club meetings and election of the club officers. This first article from April includes a big fish story and a tie in to the present with upgrades to the ramp.

redboine yacht club

The next article from June has the club supplying boats for a cruise arranged for inner city children. It names the club ‘cruisemaster’ as Ron Spears.

redboine yacht club

In July, there was an article that I find astonishing. The club is sponsoring a race across much of Lake Winnipeg and down the Red River. I wonder how many times this was done.

redboine yacht club

On September 12th, there is an article about more relaxing cruises organized by the club for members to take part in.

redboine yacht club

Lastly on September 19th we learn of the winner of the big race, Ronds Marina. Apparently the starting point was switched from Berens River to a more reasonable distance of Gull Harbour at Hecla. Also mentioned is a cruise for Red River Day sponsored by Redboine and a number of other boating organizations.

redboine yacht club

These articles are a nice and interesting slice of the past. With the favourable spring conditions we are currently experiencing, I guess that my next post will be about getting the docks in early this year. Fingers crossed…

Club History from the Winnipeg Free Press

31 Sunday Jan 2021

history , Redboine , winnipeg , Winnipeg boating Redboine history

Now that we are experiencing the joys of midwinter, I will post some more club history to get our thoughts back to summer on the river. The Winnipeg Free Press is searchable online for free if you have a library card and today I will share what I found from the first year of the club in 1956.

All the meetings were advertised the week before and welcomed all boating enthusiasts.

redboine yacht club

The club was active with the issues in the city pertaining to the river.

redboine yacht club

The club’s group activities made the newspaper.

redboine yacht club

The club sponsored a long distance swimmer and accompanied her from Grand Beach to Winnipeg Beach.

The club announced the annual general meeting and Al Brophy was kept on as Commodore. The ‘better facilities for bathing’ comment seems strange.

New Launch Pad at Redboine

25 Wednesday Nov 2020

Boat Club , construction , launch , ramp , Red River , Redboine , repair

The Red River started into winter in a much different way this year compared to last. Last fall ended with extremely high water on the river that froze early and then fell through the winter as the water went down. This year once the locks were opened the river level quickly fell to near 0 ft James, which is normal for winter and 6 feet lower than the normal summer level. This and the lack of snow exposed the bottom section of our launching ramp and it did not look good.

redboine yacht club

It appeared that we were lucky there was no trouble with the process of pulling all the boats out this fall. So fixing the ramp moved to the top of our repair list, and the weather was cooperating. The decision to act was made quickly and we went from quotes, to work in progress, to complete in a matter of a few weeks.

redboine yacht club

Now that the concrete has hardened, it has been uncovered and we were able to get a few pictures before it gets covered up with snow.

redboine yacht club

I can’t wait to try it out.

End of Season 2020

18 Sunday Oct 2020

The end date of the 2020 season was the usual Thanksgiving weekend, when the locks are opened up and the river level starts to drop to the normal winter level known as 0 feet at James St. station. Thanks to Chester and Pat and the others who helped to get the docks out. We encourage members to take part in this to help lighten the load and learn what is involved in the annual ritual.

As everyone knows, most things in 2020 were not the usual. Because of COVID the use of the clubhouse was restricted and we were not able to book any gatherings.

The river level was not normal for much of the summer and it shortened our boating season considerably. I will share some screenshots from the cities river level web page to show how it unfolded.

redboine yacht club

The graph above shows the river dropping in October after thanksgiving and the drop in May after a fairly high flood season that left the ground soaked and delayed the docks going in until the end of the month.

redboine yacht club

The river stayed normal for almost two weeks and the docks were in place and a small number of boats got in when the excess of rain to the south of us caused a 6 foot jump in the river. The docks were hanging on by chains and no more boats were allowed in. The tending of the chains is a demanding task, again thanks to Pat and Chester.

redboine yacht club

I got my boat in the river as June ended then pulled it out again a few days later as more record rains south of us caused a quick rise of about 7 feet. It was another 3 weeks before the docks could be secured well enough to allow all member boats in to start the season.

The rest of the summer was wonderful out on the water. It was nice to have the river to enjoy when so many other activities were shut down by the pandemic. Plans are in the works to improve the mechanics of the chains attaching the docks to the piles so that these river level interruptions are minimized.

Boats In 2020

07 Sunday Jun 2020

2020 , Boat Club , docks , launch , Red River , Redboine , season

The weather did not fully cooperate but over the last week it was good enough to get all the docks in the water. Thanks to all who helped and especially Chester for running the operation.

redboine yacht club

There are still some details to finish off but boats can get in the water and tie up as of tomorrow June 8th. The weather may not cooperate with that however.

redboine yacht club

By the end of the week the sun will be out and there may be a lineup at the launching pad. I for one am excited about another summer on the river.

Docks Going In 2020

24 Sunday May 2020

boating , club , docks , Red River , Redboine , repair , rescue , winnipeg

The process of putting the Redboine Boating Club docks back in the water has begun. And to celebrate that, I will share the story of one dock in particular. Dock #1 is located at the east end of the row closest to shore and has a well engineered notch for one of the posts that hold the docks in place.

redboine yacht club

Last year ended with a sudden rise in the river due to record September rainfall and with the rush to get the boats and docks safely out of the water dock #1 was left chained to the post with only a corner of it visible above the surface. The river froze at a very high level and although attempts were made there was no chance to rescue the dock. It spent the winter in the ice.

redboine yacht club

Spring came and the ice broke up and more attempts were made to rescue the dock. It was tied to shore with a strong rope and plans were being made while the quite high spring flood was happening. The dock broke free of the ice, snapping the rope, and started floating down the river with the ice. Luckily it did not get far and was tied up to the shore just west of the club.

redboine yacht club

As the spring flood receded, dock #1 was brought to shore and included in the spring repair ritual. After much straightening and board replacement it was put back in the water, the first in, after being by far the last out.

redboine yacht club

This of course is only a small part of the story. If you want to hear of all the adventure and heroics I think Pat Bohme is the member to ask.

The tale of Winnipeg’s yacht club

Advertise with us

Hey there, time traveller! This article was published 21/05/2013 (3975 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

Recently, The Times brought forward information on the history of the Buchanan Marina site at the foot of the Louise Bridge, and the steps that have been taken to preserve the site  by acknowledging the history of this location and its importance.

I consider myself fortunate to be able to provide some information about the site through my volunteer work at this location.

Winnipeg has had very few locations over the years offering boating enthusiasts the opportunity to have a boat moored at locations along the great rivers that we are very fortunate to have for our enjoyment.

Inside the perimeter over the years, there has been the Kildonan Yacht Club, Pritchard Boat Yard, Redboine Yacht Club and even Grapes Pier Seven had docks available for seasonal mooring in the past.

Outside the perimeter, we also have the Royal Manitoba Yacht Club in West St. Paul, which continues to offer excellent amenities for the boating community.

A fully serviced yacht club came alive after Buchanan Marina was closed in the late 1980’s. The yacht club stayed there from 1985 until 1997.

The site was operated as the Point Douglas Yacht Club (PDYC) upon the demise of Buchanan Marine.  A group of likeminded boating individuals realized there was still a strong demand within the Winnipeg boating community.

A group of Winnipeg business folks were able to negotiate a lease with the province, which owned the site, and continued on with a viable boating club that provided many hours of enjoyment for over a decade at this location.

Over the years we were able to offer daily boat ramp service, summer winter storage, cradle pull-out service for larger owners who did not have trailers or for boats that were too large to have trailers. This was a very important, much-needed service for the Winnipeg boating community.

Great times were had over the years with barbecues and pancake breakfast fundraisers being organized during those long lazy days of summer. It was very common to see boaters getting together very early in the day for good times and fellowship when the sun was shining!

PDYC was always recognized as a great place to go and was an important part of the Winnipeg boating community. With all operations being run and financed by a core of volunteers, who were dedicated to ensuring Winnipeg had a great place available that offered a safe place to moor your boat and a great place to enjoy the rivers of our great province.

The Red River was very predictable for seasonal use up until about 1988. After that, we would notice what we still see today— the increasing flows and summer high water— which made it very difficult to maintain docks in a safe manner due to the fluctuating water levels.

During the 1997 flood we saw the water spill the banks at this location and submerge our riverside clubhouse. After the Flood of the Century, it was decided that we as a volunteer group felt that it was unfortunate, but very apparent, that the Point Douglas Yacht Club had sailed it last voyage.

The province, in turn, entered negotiations with the City of Winnipeg and as of today it still remains as a launch site for boating enthusiasts to use.

Been a boater at this club for over 20 years. It’s in the city, so easy access. Fees are reasonable and if it’s good enough for the City River Patrol then it’s good enough for most. Kitchen and washrooms in club house.

I teamed up with these guys last year and came all season mainly because of the gas prices but also because of the gas prices but also because I've hung out here since 2007 on enough with 6 boats They're getting ready to open up now it's a late season season I'm gonna be here pretty much everyday everyday living on my boat enjoying the rest of summer that's available these guys have brought me into their club and make me a part of something very special while I'm losing my father to the effects of covid This is a place to call home something to be a part of and grow with what's going on over here at the boat club is a special thing.

Clean launch facility... ramp is not too steep... plenty of docking.

Great Service, Very Nice Grounds and Club, Extremely Helpful Owners, Manager, Members and Yard Help.

Ebony Boat Club

37 years of boating  excellence &  community service

redboine yacht club

Ebony Boat Club Established in 1987

Ebony Boat Club (EBC) was founded in 1987 to expand the yachting experience to minorities. Thankfully times and attitudes in the boating community have evolved to accept all people regardless of race or religion.  Our favorite acronym for E. B. C. is Everybody's Boat Club!  Yacht Clubs normally exclude smaller boats, so in an effort to include all boats regardless of size the name Ebony Boat Club instead of Ebony Yacht Club was adopted.

Our history.

On October 28, 1896, a new yacht club called “The Red Bank Yacht Club” was formed. The Club bought a float 40×60 feet, on which it built a club house. The Float was anchored in the river. It began to hold races every Saturday morning for the summer season . . .

Pharrell Quietly Drops New Album 'Black Yacht Rock Vol. 1'

Pharrell Secretly Drops New Album 'Black Yacht Rock' pharrell williams mixtape not available streaming

Pharrell Williams has quietly dropped a new album titled Black Yacht Rock Vol 1. . The 10-track album appears to be an ode to his hometown of Virginia, calling it a “City of Limitless Access.”

Only available to listen via the album’s website, BlackYachtRock , Pharrell releases the album without the help of any streaming platform. Those who have listened to the album might akin the release to listening to a Pharrell-only radio channel. Some of the tracks in the album include “Richard Mille,” “Caged Bird Free,” “11:11” and “Going Back to VA.” The website to listen to the album is simple. Providing all the tracks as audio recordings, each song is available for download as is the entire album as a whole. There is also the option to join the mailing list. Those who have joined will receive an ominous “Stay tuned…” message after submitting their email.

Pharrell Sets Sail on His Yacht Rock Era With Surprise New Album

  • By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Pharrell appears to be celebrating his 51st birthday today, April 5, with a gift to fans — a new album that’s totally free to stream and download through one specific website .

To say there aren’t many confirmable details about the 10-track project is an understatement. Based purely on the album artwork, the project appears to be called Black Yacht Rock Vol. 1: City of Limitless Access and might be credited to a group called Virginia — though, for all we know, Virginia is part of the title.

And while it’s definitely Pharrell singing on the album, his name isn’t attached anywhere to the project, not even the metadata of the Mp3s if you download the LP (it’s similarly unclear if he played all the instruments himself or brought in some collaborators). The musician hasn’t promoted the album on his website or social media.

Musk Admits He Doesn't Fact-Check Himself and Has Two Burner Accounts on Twitter

The wait is over: billie eilish announces new album 'hit me hard and soft', taylor swift teases 'the tortured poets department' during solar eclipse, dream theater on emotional mike portnoy reunion, first 40th anniversary tour dates.

Black Yacht Rock Vol. 1 (if that is the official title) marks Pharrell’s first solo album (if we can actually consider this a solo album) since 2014’s Girl . He’s released two other collaborative singles this year, “Good People” with Mumford and Sons and “Doctor (Work It Out)” with Miley Cyrus.

Pharrell also has a couple of movie projects in the works. The first, announced earlier this year, will be a biopic of sorts but told entirely through Lego brick animation (it’s fittingly called Piece By Piece ). The other is an as-yet-untitled collaboration with filmmaker Michel Gondry , which will be set in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1977 (where Pharrell grew up) and feature a cast of Halle Bailey, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Judge shows mercy to ex-Romulus mayor who spent campaign money on yacht club, wedding

redboine yacht club

Former Romulus Mayor LeRoy Burcroff used campaign funds to help pay for his daughter's yacht club wedding, his yacht club dues and a Florida vacation with friends — but he isn't going to prison for any of it, despite his guilty plea.

Instead, a federal judge on Thursday gave the convicted ex-politician three years' probation and four months' home confinement, sparing him a prison sentence that the government sought. Federal prosecutors had requested that Burcroff be locked up for 14 months for betraying the public's trust by using more than $15,000 in campaign money for personal spending.

"The residents of Romulus, Michigan, put their trust in defendant LeRoy Burcroff. Those who supported the defendant with their wallet and their vote likely never expected this aspiring politician to spend their hard-earned money on a family wedding, a Florida vacation with friends or a yacht club membership," Assistant U.S. Attorney Eaton P. Brown wrote in a sentencing memo that urged the judge to lock Burcroff up.

"Sadly, over a period of over four years, the defendant made a mockery of the city’s slogan — the 'Home of Opportunity' — by stealing thousands of dollars in campaign donations to enhance his lifestyle."

Brown added: "The defendant’s deceit and dishonesty must be punished."

'I made some terrible mistakes, made some terrible decisions'

Burcroff, though, convinced U.S. District Judge Denise Paige Hood to show him mercy. In a letter to the judge, the 59-year-old father and grandfather described himself as a prayerful man and avid community volunteer who was lucky enough to marry his high school sweetheart, raise children with her and pass down his family's theme to his kids: "Always do the right thing."

As for his crime — he pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2022, admitting he used $4,500 in campaign funds to help cover his daughter's yacht-club wedding — he wrote:

"I agonize everyday over what I did. I wish I could do things over, but I know I can't."

He went on to say:

"I never thought I would be in this position standing before a judge, admitting to breaking the law, and asking for your leniency. ... I made some terrible mistakes, made some terrible decisions. ... I am so sorry."

While Burcroff pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud, he did not admit during his plea hearing to using more than $15,000 in campaign money for personal reasons, which is what he was charged with.

According to the government, in addition to using campaign money to help pay for a wedding bar tab and church ceremony fees, Burcroff also did the following:

  • In 2017, he used campaign money to overpay his membership dues at the Belleville Yacht Club. When the club realized the mistake, management wrote a $2,000 check to reimburse him for what they believed was an oversight. "This was no misstep, however," prosecutors wrote in court documents. "Upon receiving the reimbursement, (he) promptly deposited the sum into his personal bank account."
  • In 2014, Burcroff bought a $23,000 Ford Focus with campaign funds that he used “extensively for personal purposes,” then later bought a $27,000 Jeep Wrangler that he used for “similar impermissible personal excursions.”
  • In March 2018, he bought his way onto the board of a local trade organization, Power Transmission Distributors Association, by making a $1,000 donation to the group from his campaign account.
  • In January 2019, he flew his wife and two friends to Florida for a weekend vacation — courtesy of his campaign donors. The couples stayed in a luxury hotel and dined in fine restaurants to the tune of more than $4,000 — all of which was billed to the campaign. The friends who accompanied him on the trip reimbursed him for their portion of the vacation. Burcroff then deposited the friends' money into his personal account, thus doubling his money.

In 2020, after WXYZ broke details about Burcroff's campaign scheme, Burcroff reimbursed his campaign $35,000.

Following Burcroff's sentencing hearing, U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison stated that Burcroff’s conviction and sentence"underscores our commitment to ensuring that" communities in southeast Michigan "are represented by public officials who have integrity and are seeking office not for their self-interest, but for the good of the people they are elected to represent.”

Added Detroit's FBI chief Cheyvoryea Gibson: "The former mayor's actions severely undermined the confidence of those who bestowed trust and faith in him and his office. ... We will not tolerate misconduct and will do everything we can to ensure justice is served."
