RM970 on test – award-winning plywood family cruiser from Marc Lombard

RM has continuously improved its boats and the new 970 is a spacious and highly versatile yacht.

When I visited the RM yard in La Rochelle in 2012, I was really impressed by the quality of the company’s plywood epoxy construction process. Not only is plywood more sustainable than composite or metal, it is also a stiff, light and naturally insulating material.

RM’s yachts were still a little quirky, however, and needed to dazzle a little more on the water. Since then RM has moved into a larger yard and put an energetic young team in place, which has given the new line added spark.

RM won the European Yacht of the Year family cruiser category in 2013, was nominated in 2015 with its 890 and won again this year. Other nominees in the 2016/17 European Yacht of the Year awards : Django 12.70, Ikone 7.50, Jeanneau 51, Sunbeam 22.1.

This 970 perfectly demonstrates why designer Marc Lombard is so crafty in this size range. Modern lines, including reverse sheerline and voluminous forward sections, help create a spacious and highly versatile yacht that’s fun to sail.

Wheel or tiller steering can be specified; fixed or twin keels are offered too. RM has collaborated with specialists INO Rope on the deck layout: the purchase systems make light work of sail handling; the 3D genoa on an inhauler/barber system is a particularly neat set-up.

The 970 is great fun on the helm, really sporty, especially with the kite hoisted. There is direct communication to the twin rudders, which have real traction, allowing you to boss her around sharply.

Those accustomed to single rudders may still miss the feedback however, as the helm is neutral. We sailed in 15 to 18 knots with full sail, averaging 8.5 to 9 knots under gennaker.

At just over 9 knots she starts to plane, which is a blast and about the right balance of sportiness and control that you want out of a family cruiser. Upwind figures hovered around 7 knots but at a relatively low angle, even under staysail.

RM sites the primary winches inboard, which is a superbly practical solution and the cutter rig option works well for cruising. I enjoyed steering from the aft quarters, but at this size, when a boat is fitted with wheels rather than tillers, the helmsman is squashed against the backstay.

Down below is the sort of  simple, bright and colourful modern interior that RM is known for. The saloon receives the majority of the space and light, thanks also to the open vee berth forward, and it adjoins a galley and a proper little navstation.

The two-cabin layout has a large heads aft that includes some wet hanging space and access to a utility/storage area.

Toby’s conclusion

This is the most impressive RM yet and shows the plywood specialists setting the bar for midsize cruisers. The 970 packs it all in – exciting performance in a fun, voluminous, versatile and refreshingly modern family-friendly cruiser. However, like past RMs it is comparatively expensive. I like the deck design, notably the running rigging and winch layout, and she’s a joy to drive – sporty yet authoritative, the ideal balance for a fast family cruiser.

What’s she like to sail?

She’s a real sailor’s boat and a joy to helm. Even with twin rudders she was ever so responsive and light on the wheels She feels like a bigger boat, partly due to the helm position being perched on the transom and the large, well thought-out cockpit ahead of you. There are plenty of control lines for those who love to tweak, but it’s not necessary to constantly play them. Her hull is light and easily driven, and getting over 5 knots to windward in 10 knots of apparent showed her speed potential (although she was without a typical payload of cruising kit).

She is more than a tonne lighter than a GRP cruiser of the same size

Her deck layout, with the genoa winches flanking the companionway, works really well for a short-handed crew. One person can handle both sheets while tacking without even moving their feet or leaning over the coaming. They can also take a step forward and up to tend the coachroof winches while standing upright.

What’s she like in port and at anchor?

Our test boat had a single keel and twin rudders, but the opposite is available too and using the twin keels and single rudder she can take the ground with ease. The foredeck is flat, broad and ideal for sunbathing or inflating dinghies. The foredeck anchor locker is vast and ideal for fenders, which is just as well, as getting kit in and out of the technical area, aft of the heads, on a daily basis would soon lose its appeal – and scratch the paintwork.

She has a single bow roller integrated into the optional bowsprit, which houses the bower anchor. You’d need to rig a bridle to use a swinging mooring.

Like nearly all twin-rudder yachts, she lacked propwash over the rudders when manoeuvring in tight spaces.

Would she suit you and your crew?

The RM970 isn’t your normal family cruiser and RM isn’t your normal boatbuilder. Everything is a little bit different: hard chines, plywood construction, multicoloured hulls. About the only ‘regular’ thing on board is the GRP deck, which is lined with wood! Not everyone will like her reverse bow; from some angles she looks low and sleek, from others she can appear slab-sided and boxy, but all this matters not when you start sailing her. Put aside any reservations and have a go at what she does best: sailing.

She might appear basic – an argument bolstered by the lack of a solid door to the forepeak – but she displays many features lacking on more expensive yachts: soft closures on locker doors, Antal deck hardware, Dyneema halyards and fine-tune adjustment on the mainsheet led back to the helm. You may want more space and privacy, or more headroom if you’re over 6ft tall. If so, check out the RM 1070. But if you’re willing to forego a little luxury for a cracking sailing boat, this one should be on your shortlist.

RM 1080, The New Bluewater With Convertible Cockpit

The French shipyard RM-Yachts has unveiled the first images of the future RM 1080, a 36-foot (10.80-metre) convertible cockpit yacht. With modern lines, designed once again by Marc Lombard , the inverted stem, a pronounced knee, which reaches from the stern to the bow, and a large dolphin striker, RM1080 has an innovative cockpit, adaptable according to the needs of the moment ( navigation or relaxation), for a comfortable and safe cruise.

The hull material is a mix of plywood and epoxy resin, the use of which, unparalleled in the history of modern yachting, enables to design original, high-performance yachts, limiting the need for molded 100% glass-polyester composite hulls. 

The RM 1080 features a cockpit that can be transformed into a sun deck, helm and maneuvering station, all under the protection of a large spray hood and secure cockpit sides. The ergonomics of the helm stations are not to be outdone, with two eccentric steering wheels and integrated seats.

A true bluewater sailboat , the RM 1080 features a real chart table, a draining foul weather gear locker, a U-shaped galley and a vast saloon. The usual technical room will also facilitate maintenance and access to systems. The spacious cabins also benefit from the full width of this powerful hull.

The User acknowledges that possesses the necessary naval and navigational knowledge for handling the hired boat. If the hirerer gives the boat to another person for handling he is still responsible in case of accident. 3. In the case when contractor wants break the contract, the contractor is obliged to pay the appropriate portion of rent, up to 30 days before the start of the rental 50%, less than 14 days before 100% of the total amount. 4. User receives a boat to rent in good condition, fully equipped for sailing, any objections must be entered in the log during handower. 5. The User is obliged to return the boat in time, until 18:00 HRS, with equipment and full fuel tank. In case of delay user must pay damages lessor for lost time, 60 euro and fuel if fuel tank is not full. 6. The User is obligate: not to give a boat in the sublease, not transport the illicit number of persons, no tow other boats (except only in case of danger), on the boat to move in the appropriate shoes or barefoot, to control the amount of oil and the engine indicators while driving. NOTE! Damage to the engine due to malfunction of the system for cooling and due to the lack of oil in the engine are not insured are at the expense of the User, in case of damage immediately notify the owner.If you fail the above obligation of the lessor has the right to terminate the contract and keep the rent received. 7.
