  • Stalin skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya (Tinkers) embankment;
  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;
  • The Central House of Artists;
  • Christ the Savior Cathedral;
  • Gorky Park;

  • Luzhniki stadium;
  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Miss Manners: Our yacht club sponsors seem to consider us an ‘improvement project’

  • Published: Feb. 28, 2024, 8:00 p.m.

Miss Manners answers a question about how to handle snobby yacht club sponsors

Judith Martin, known as Miss Manners, answers a question about how to handle snobby yacht club sponsors. Canva

  • Judith Martin

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My husband’s old boss and his wife invited us to join a local yacht club. Ever since we joined, the wife has been bubbling with snippy comments about my grooming and hairstyle, alluding to where I may have purchased my clothing, and making numerous misguided class-oriented statements.

She seems to have brought me into the club as a target, like a clay pigeon. In their eyes, we were good enough to be nominated and sponsored, but now that we’re in, I’m considered an “improvement project” by these elders.

I have tried to generously assume the differences are generational (80s vs. 50s) or cultural (I’m not alcoholic, but the sponsors are markedly so).

She’s made the club a lot less fun by biting my ankles. My husband insists the chiding will go away in time. I see no end to my sponsor’s backhanded comments, though, and no longer find the scene so charming.

Is there a way to trim my sponsor’s snippy commentary without reminding her that alcohol makes her a poor host?

GENTLE READER: Let’s also avoid telling her that alcoholism is a “cultural difference.”

The problem is actually not one of culture or generation -- you have a problem of rank. The husband was your husband’s boss, and they were your sponsors at the club. Both incline you to be not just deferential, but grateful.

Miss Manners does not believe that the wife’s rudeness cancels out past kindnesses, but you are now equals -- as members and adults. You should not feel obliged to spend time with them if it is a burden.

(Please send your questions to Miss Manners at her website, www.missmanners.com ; to her email, [email protected] ; or through postal mail to Miss Manners, Andrews McMeel Syndication, 1130 Walnut St., Kansas City, MO 64106.)

Summer Sailing Camp Returns at Rochester Yacht Club

Western New York’s largest summer sailing camp will be out on the water at the Rochester Yacht Club.

"We are really, really excited here at the Rochester Yacht Club to get people back out on the water and sailing," said Junior Sailing Director Liam Faudree.

The Junior Sailing Camp is ready to sail with seven weeks of sailing instruction for kids ages 6 to 18. Faudree can’t wait to get the "learn to sail" program, "adventure sailing," and race teams going.

"It has been day to day. We have been listening to the Governor talk every day and it is like what is going to happen and how many kids and what can we do? So when the Governor came out and said that we can have summer camp starting June 29 we were like 'alright!'" Faudree said.

Junior Sailing Camp is on at the Rochester Yacht Club. There’s 7 weeks of #sailing programs for kids 6-18. You do NOT need to be a RYC member. Health safety guidelines are in place. Classes limited to 7, hand sanitizing, social distancing and more.⛵️ @SPECNewsROC @RochesterYacht pic.twitter.com/WB1lQuP0MF — Wendy Mills (@WendyMillsTV) June 17, 2020

Campers will not have to deal with high water levels this year, but there are some health safety guideline requirements. Classes will be limited to seven kids or less, there will be temperature checks at check-in, masks must be worn when not sailing, there will be hand sanitizing stations, boats will be cleaned daily, and students must bring their own lifejackets.

"Now the kids are just pumped and itching to get out on the water and I am ready to go as well so bring it on. Let's go warm weather and let's go sailing!" Faudree added.

“Bring it on, let’s go warm weather and let’s go sailing,” says RYC Junior Sailing Director Liam Faudree. Register now for sailing camp that starts up June 29. @SPECNewsROC @RochesterYacht #roc #sailing #SummerCamp pic.twitter.com/7IWNrN8fTm — Wendy Mills (@WendyMillsTV) June 17, 2020

You do not have to be a Rochester Yacht Club member to attend summer sailing camp. Camp registration is happening now at rochesteryc.com .  Adult sailing classes are also available.

Two Southern California yacht clubs recognized on Top 50 list

romanshorn yacht club

Platinum Clubs organization names Newport Harbor YC and San Diego YC to worldwide compilation.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA—Newport Harbor and San Diego yacht clubs both earned a spot on the Top 50 Platinum Yacht Clubs for 2020-2021, it was recently announced. The worldwide list is compiled by Platinum Clubs of the World.

Placing on the list means a yacht club is presented with the title of “Five Star Clubs of Excellence.”

San Diego YC was founded in 1886 and has recently hosted sailing events such as Women’s Winter Invitational, Yachting Cup, the CA500, the SoCal 300, Dutch Shoe Marathon, International Masters Regatta and Lipton Cup.

Newport Harbor YC first opened its doors in 1916 and hosts the Newport to Cabo Race every two years, among other regattas.

Other yacht clubs making the Top 50 list included: Annapolis Yacht Club, Beach Point Club, Chicago Yacht Club, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Nassau Yacht Club (Bahamas), Raffles Marina (Singapore), Real Club Nautico de Vigo (Spain), Royal Bombay Yacht Club (India), Royal Cork Yacht Club (Ireland), The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (Australia), Société des Régates du Havre (France), Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Santo Amaro (Brazil).

Two Southern California yacht clubs earned an Honorable Mention, scoring within three points of the Top 50 list: Balboa Yacht Club (Newport Beach) and California Yacht Club (Marina del Rey).

Fifty yacht clubs are selected based upon points awarded by a selected panel. A yacht club must score at least 8 points to qualify for the Top 50 list. Scoring is awarded as follows: 100 points for a top three club, 80 points for a ranking between four and 10, 60 points for 11 to 25 ranking, 40 points for 26-60 ranking, 20 points for 51-75 ranking and 10 points for 76-100 ranking.

Voting was conducted by 116 panelists from all around the world; panelists hailed from the United States, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, The Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Arab Emirates. Panelists vote every two years (odd years). Finalists are selected based upon submitted recommendations from panelists and applications from yacht clubs from around the world. A final ballot is eventually created and sent out to panelists. There is a 30-day voting period, with the election conducted electronically (via a third party).

“Points are awarded by the position and ranking that the panelist assigns to each club. The total number of points is calculated and divided by the total number of panelists who have visited a club to determine the final points score,” a Platinum Clubs of the World statement about the voting process said.

The Club Leaders Forum Advisory Board of the Platinum Clubs of the World compiled the Top 50 list. Platinum Clubs of America have been recognizing top yacht clubs for more than 20 years.

Lake Norman Yacht Club is a vibrant 200-plus member sailing club located on Lake Norman near Mooresville, NC. Our 25.5-acre site surrounds a sheltered cove adjacent to a large expanse of the lake. On the Club grounds we have a 2-story Clubhouse and open-sided Pavilion with a food preparation area, gas grills, bathrooms and shower facilities. The Club has two docks for 30+ keelboats and dry storage for over 300 boats.

The Club offers 2 launch ramps, a 2-ton boat hoist and several floating docks with secure boat slips. The spacious grounds and camping facilities can easily accommodate visiting boats, so LNYC is an ideal location for hosting invitational events. Many of the Club's fleets organize one-design regattas each year and several fleets have hosted their North American, National and/or Regional Championships at LNYC. In the past the Club has hosted the prestigious Championship of Champions Regatta, the US Men's and Women's Sailing Championship Regattas and qualifying events for youth and adult US Sailing Championships

SAILING & RACING

Our Mission statement: "Lake Norman Yacht Club will dedicate its programs and resources to the growth of sailing and sailboat racing through instruction and practice in a sociable, family-friendly environment, and, by continuing our heritage of being a member-run organization."

Seminars, clinics and on-the-water instruction are an important part of the Club's commitment to emphasize the enjoyment of sailing, develop members' sailing skills and highlight the importance of safety out on the water.

Current active fleets include 420, Flying Scot, Highlander, J/70, PHRF Keelboat, Laser, MC Scow, Multi-hull, Optimist, San Juan 21, Sunfish, Thistle and Ultimate 20.

LNYC typically has Club Series Racing scheduled on 10 weekends between late March and the end of October, culminating in the Club Championship. In addition, there are usually 15 - 20 invitational regattas on the calendar, starting with the Ice Bucket Regatta held on New Year's Day and ending with the Carolina Keelboat One Design Regatta in the middle of November. Friday night "Fun Sail" events have recently been added to the Club calendar during the summer to take advantage of the early evening breezes that often spring up. The Keelboat Fleet is frequently out on the water during the winter months and again on Wednesday nights in the spring and summer taking part in lake-wide sailing events. The High School sailing season runs throughout the school year, so teams are using the 420s weekly during that time.

RACE MANAGEMENT is arranged and run by members of the Club. We have gained a national reputation for conducting well-managed races. The Club has a number of US Sailing Certified Judges, Club Race Officers and experienced race management volunteers within our membership, as well as having a dedicated Race Committee 'fleet' of nine assorted skiffs, whalers and pontoon boats.

Lake Norman Yacht Club (LNYC) is a member of the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (SAYRA) and U S Sailing.

LNYC Junior Program

This program was started in 1965 with 6 Junior sailors signing up. Nowadays between 40 and 50 youth aged 8-18 are registered each year. The program consists of on-shore sessions during the winter, followed by racing and regatta participation in the summer. LNYC Junior fleet includes twelve 420s which are used by the registered Junior members and visiting high school teams.

New 420s in action

Other boats sailed by the Juniors are Optimists, Lasers and Sunfish. The Club encourages Junior participation in SAYRA and US Sailing events as well as participation in the ISSA high school sailing program. Currently 3 teams practice at LNYC: Lake Norman HS, Pine Lake Prep and Myers Park HS.

The most popular event of the Junior sailing year is without doubt the week of Sailing Camp in June, with between 80 and 100 'campers' participating each year. (In 2018 the dates are June 11 to15). Instructors and Camp management is provided by volunteer Club members. No one knows whether the juniors or instructors have more fun! Many LNYC members donate a week of their vacation year after year in order to make this event happen. Some of the Club's top sailors got their start in the Junior Program and now third generation participants are starting to enjoy this great sport.

SOCIAL LIFE

At the end of the day, there is nothing more pleasurable than swapping tall stories with fellow sailors over a cold beverage. Fleets take turns to host the Club Dinner after Club Series Racing on Saturdays and many individuals volunteer to help with other club-sponsored events such as the Winter Social in February, the July 4 th Regatta and the Labor Day Regatta. Other notable highlights during the year include Commissioning Weekend in early spring, the Hospice Regatta Auction & Party in late spring and the annual Shrimp Boil hosted by the Past Commodores towards the end of the summer. Other social events pop up as a result of members wanting to get together just for the fun of it, such as informal Pot Luck dinners on Friday nights before a Club Series weekend, the annual Super Bowl party and Fleet Christmas parties held in the Clubhouse.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

LNYC members are also very generous with their time and talents when it comes to giving back to the community. The Club has been hosting an annual regatta to benefit a local hospice since 2001 and began hosting a Special Olympics Sailing Regatta in 2013 with club members taking on the role of Unified Partners. The Club also helps the Lake Norman Special Olympics program raise money by hosting a "Polar Plunge" early in the year. A "Discover Sailing" event is held in the spring to encourage new and lapsed sailors to get involved in the sport and participants in the "Keelboat Christmas Flotilla & Parade of Lights" donate items for the "Toys for Tots" program.

Lake Norman Yacht Club was incorporated in September 1961, even though the 50-square mile lake was not completely full until 1963. The original 14-acre site leased from Duke Power occupied the north side of the cove currently occupied by the Pavilion, camping sites and the centerboard and multi-hull dry storage areas. Duke Power offered the club additional acreage on the south side of the cove in 1966, which is where the Clubhouse was constructed in 1969. In 1986 LNYC was able to purchase the land it stood on from Duke Power, ensuring the stability of the club for many years to come.

The first official race was held on May 26, 1963, at which time the club consisted of a single dock, a mud turnaround, a Porta-Jon and an 80-feet long launch ramp that had been built while the lake was still filling up. The first racing marks were peach baskets kept afloat by Styrofoam boxes. During that summer club members erected a steel-framed bath house that was extended in 1964 to include an open-sided pavilion topped with a tin roof to accommodate picnic tables and provide shelter from the weather. This structure was renovated and upgraded over the years until it was demolished in August 2014 to make way for a brand new Pavilion.
