“Alloy Yachts are so well built that they’re legendary on the sailing circuit,” the owner, who wants to remain private, told Robb Report . “I sailed optimists and laser dinghies as a child, and I’ve been buying and refitting sailing boats for 30 years, but Q caught my eye with her lower profile, sleek lines and the fact she’s really fast. She’s ideal for racing.”

Among Q ’s original Dubois design elements is an uncluttered deck that keeps the profile sleek. The large cockpit is also unique: It’s air-conditioned, with electric windows. It’s a feature that the owner found highly appealing. “We keep the windows open in good weather and close them down in wind. We don’t tend to use the air conditioning, but it’s nice to be able to do so,” he says.

Most other areas of the boat, however, have undergone transitions, following two major refits in 2016 and 2021. The most significant includes large 3DI carbon sails that hoist in a matter of minutes. In flat water and 35 knots of wind, Q easily reaches 19 knots.

“We had a Danish designer who assisted us with Q , though we incorporated a lot of ideas from Rémi, who we remain friends with after all these years,” said the owner.

All furniture was refurbished, while the design team added dark-wood veneers and custom-built Fendi sofas. A more reliable, energy efficient air-conditioning system was installed. There’s even the addition of an app-controlled TopBrewer in the main salon for barista-quality coffee.

Over the past 15 years the yacht has enjoyed active participation on the competitive regatta circuit, from Loro Piana to the St Barth’s Bucket, with the hands-on owner at the heart of the action.

Most years, Q is a familiar sight in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. After this year’s Bucket, Q embarks on a rigorous sailing schedule that will take the boat through the Panama Canal to cruise the Galapagos Islands before settling in French Polynesia for the summer. The owner’s 12-day Galapagos itinerary takes in drift dives, tender rides through sea caves and a trip to Punta Suarez, the only Waved Albatross nesting ground in the world. The French Polynesian itinerary remains dependent on charter enquiries.

The yacht’s drop-down transom creates a large swim platform with a ladder for easy access to the water. It’s a great way to enjoy the selection of “healthy toys” on board, from kayaks and Seabobs to a sailing dinghy and diving gear. The owner’s favorite place to be is the aft deck, which has a projector installed on the mizzen boom for a home-cinema feel. It’s another detail added during the refit to give the yacht a personalized touch, though now that Q proves so irresistible with charter guests, a third sailing yacht acquisition could be on the horizon.

The highly popular charter sailing yacht Q was built in 2009 by Alloy Yachts .  Specifically designed for long voyages, Q provides total comfort and luxury to her charter guests and boasts incredible interior design by bespoke Reymond Langdon .  With lavish accommodation for ten guests and a variety of opulent amenities, Q has become one of the most admired charter yachts . What makes her so successful in the charter market, Roxanne Hughes found out in the interview with the owner of sailing yacht Q, Kim Vibe-Petersen.

Interview with Kim Vibe-Petersen, the Owner of the 52m Charter Sailing Yacht Q

When Vibe-Petersen presented his latest purchase, the 51.7m sailing yacht Q, to the charter market, his intention was to inspire people: “People see me aboard with my family and how we’ve put our soul into this yacht and they say ‘Ah, I would love to do the same with my family’. We have become an advert for how the yacht should be used.”

Having completed a full interior refit, giving this 2009-launched Dubois design a new lease of life with Scandinavian style, Q has been quickly booked up and this summer is now back-to-back with charters.

“Myself and the family haven’t had much chance to use her yet! But we have a week or two planned – we may go to New York later this Spring, then on to Bermuda to watch the America’s Cup , but after that she’s straight into the charter season. When my last boat, Parsifal III , was launched, we had bookings for her a year in advance and with Q it’s basically the same, that’s seldom seen these days.”

Vibe-Petersen describes Q as the ultimate holiday home or summer house, highlighting her adaptability between blue water cruiser, regatta racer, luxurious home and even nightclub – recently illustrated at the St Barths Bucket where many guests partied the night away on the yacht’s large flybridge during the event’s ‘Yacht- Hop’ evening.

Q, a 68.2 m Motor Yacht built in Netherlands and delivered in 2012, is the flagship of Royal Niestern Sander .

Her top speed is 12.5 kn and she boasts a maximum range of 6000.0 nm when navigating at cruising speed, with power coming from two Caterpillar diesel electric engines. She can accommodate up to 16 guests in 8 staterooms, with 13 crew members. She has a gross tonnage of 2450.0 GT and a 13.2 m beam.

She was designed by RWD , who also designed the interior. RWD has designed 45 yachts and designed the interior of 65 yachts for yachts above 24 metres.

The naval architecture was developed by Royal Niestern Sander - she is built with a Teak deck, a Steel hull, and Aluminium superstructure.

Q is in the top 5% by LOA in the world. She is one of 201 motor yachts in the 60-70m size range, and, compared to similarly sized motor yachts, her volume is 1234.58 GT above the average.

Q is currently sailing under the Cayman Islands flag, the 2nd most popular flag state for superyachts with a total of 1361 yachts registered. Superyacht Q is the second of the largest yachts built by Sunseeker, and arguably the best Sunseeker ever built. Featuring exterior and interior design by Sunseeker, she is the second unit of the 155 range, sitting just below 500GT. Having been built to a higher specification than the first hull, she epitomized what the Sunseeker 155 yacht project was due to be from conception.

The 32.5m/106'8" motor yacht 'Q' (ex. Goody) was built by Falcon in Italy at their Viareggio shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Falcon and she was completed in 2001. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Stefano Righini and she was last refitted in 2007.

Q has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 suites comprising one VIP cabin. She is also capable of carrying up to 5 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Range & Performance

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, with teak decks, she has impressive speed and great efficiency thanks to her planing hull. Powered by twin diesel MTU (12V 396 TE94) 2,285hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 20 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 27 knots with a range of up to 620 nautical miles from her 15,300 litre fuel tanks at 20 knots. Her water tanks store around 2,750 Litres of fresh water. She was built to RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) classification society rules.
