2023-24 Perry Cup

Perry cup 4th race & final results, february 3, 2024.

John and Mike Ravizza won this season’s Perry Cup Series with a first and two second-place finishes against three other Mercs on an overcast day with a light but remarkably steady northerly breeze on Monterey Bay. Patti and Jack McAleer needed to shift the weather mark only once when the wind shifted to the right and diminished to a whisper, as the boats ghosted to the finish on a three-lap windward-leeward course that PRO Dick Clark wisely shortened after two laps.

Second place went to Bradley Schoch and Patrick O’Hara of the local fleet. They accomplished the rare feat of earning 1st in the Silver Division in addition to their overall podium finish.

Ravizza’s and Schoch’s boats were the only two to start all twelve races in the series. Third place in the series went to Dave West and Chris Krueger, who missed the first weekend’s races. Randy Smith was absent from January’s four-race installment but still finished the series in 4th place with two wins on the last day.

Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix

Los Gallos claim first ever event win with historic victory in LA.

Spain made history in Los Angeles, beating Season 3 champions Australia and ROCKWOOL Denmark to claim its first ever SailGP event win.

Diego Botin’s young crew overcame light wind conditions by minimizing maneuvers and sailing the shortest distance to trounce ROCKWOOL DEN and Australia in front of sell-out shoreside crowds.

The win came after Spain scraped into the Final by a one-point margin over Canada - meaning they managed to convert their first Final appearance into a first event win in four seasons.

The victory followed a period of upheaval and uncertainty for the young Spanish team - with former flight controller Botin only becoming driver in February 2023 - and it moved them up into second in the Championship rankings.

Everything you need to know about the 37th America’s Cup

Follow the build-up to the 37th America’s Cup as the teams prepare to fight it out for the oldest sporting trophy in the world.

Which teams are in the 37th America’s Cup?

In 2021 four teams raced in fully foiling AC75 monohulls which were conceived specifically for the event by then Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand and Challenger of Record, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

These same four teams return for the 2024 America’s Cup and will be joined by two additional teams, bringing the total number of entries up to 6.

Emirates Team New Zealand – America’s Cup Defender

As the current holder of the America’s Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand will be racing again in the 37th America’s Cup. As the Defender, the Kiwis will be guaranteed a spot in the America’s Cup regatta itself.

Any other challengers will need to race each other in preliminary regattas for the right to be the single challenger in the America’s Cup regatta itself.

Emirates Team New Zealand represent the Royal Auckland Yacht Club in America’s Cup racing.

americas-cup-world-series-contenders-ineos-team-uk-britannia-credit-C-Gregory

INEOS Britannia – America’s Cup Challenger of Record

The Challenger of Record is the name given to the first yacht club to challenge the holder of the America’s Cup once it has been won.

When Emirates Team New Zealand successfully completed their defence of the America’s Cup in 2021, the Royal Yacht Squadron immediately issued a challenge on behalf of Ben Ainslie’s INEOS Team UK (now called INEOS Britannia), so they are Challenger of Record for the 37th America’s Cup .

INEOS Britannia and Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team has strengthened an exhausting relationship, with the British challenger standing to benefit from the technical and engineering experience of the multiple World Champion F1 team.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli has a very long America’s Cup history having first competed in 2000 and has taken part in every Cup since (with the exception of the unique 2010 Deed of Gift match).

For the 36th America’s Cup Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli were the challenger of record. They also won the challenger selection series so it was this Italian team who took on Emirates Team New Zealand for the America’s Cup itself.

The team will return for the 37th America’s Cup though this time they are not the official challenger of record.

American Magic

In 2021 the New York Yacht Clubs’ American Magic was also competing, though their event was ultimately ruined by a capsize in the early part of the regatta . They did get the boat rebuilt but it never got back up to speed and they made an early exit.

The 2021 campaign marked the return of the New York Yacht Club to the America’s Cup. The NYYC held the America’s Cup from its inception in 1851 right the way through to 1983, when they were defeated by the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Australia II .

American Magic have confirmed their entry into the 37th America’s Cup and will, once again, be representing the New York Yacht Club.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing

Another team making a return to the America’s Cup scene after a long break will be Ernesto Bertarelli’s Alinghi team. The Swiss team won the America’s Cup in 2003 and then completed a successful defence in 2007.

However, a serious falling out over the potential rules for the next America’s Cup saw Alinghi taken to court by Larry Ellison and his BMW Oracle team, the 2010 America’s Cup was held between Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing in a Deed of Gift match that saw the teams fight it out in huge multihulls.

BMW Oracle won the contest and Alinghi stepped away from America’s Cup racing. Their return is a welcome one and their Cup history alongside their partnership with Red Bull Racing should see them a solid challenge from the off.

Orient Express Team France

The French entry to the 2024 America’s Cup was long rumoured but it was not until quite late in the day that they officially announced their intention to challenge.

It was in early 2023 that the official announcement came of a French AC entry, backed by Accor Group and its brands Orient Express and ALL-ACCOR Live Limitless.

As a fairly late challenge they will have a lot to do to be competitive.

What boats will be used in the 37th America’s Cup

The Protocol for the 37th America’s Cup has been released including the rules for the class of boat to be used in the next edition of the event. Once again the America’s Cup will be raced for in AC75s . These boats were first brought in ahead of the 36th America’s Cup so this will be their second outing.

The foiling monohulls will be slightly different, with rules being tweaked partly aimed at improving light wind performance and reducing crew numbers from 11 to 8.

Teams will only be allowed to build one AC75 and nationality rules are strict this time around requiring 100% of the race crew for each competitor to either be a passport holder of the country of the team’s yacht club or to have been physically present in that country for 18 months of the previous three years prior to 17th March 2021.

Emirates Team New Zealand saw success in 2017 in Bermuda with their Cyclors . These may well return for the 37th America’s Cup.

When it comes to the events, there will be up to three Preliminary Regattas, the first two raced in a new one-design class of AC40s , the last one at the Match venue in AC75s. The Challenger Selection Series and the America’s Cup Match will be held in 2024.

Barcelona, the venue for the 37th America’s Cup

Where will the 37th America’s Cup be held?

Barcelona, Spain was selected in 2022 as the venue for the 37th America’s Cup , marking the first time a New Zealand team has chosen to defend a Cup win overseas.

The home city of Emirates Team New Zealand and the venue for the 36th America’s Cup, Auckland, had an exclusive period in which to tender for the regatta immediately after the Kiwis’ successful defence in 2021, but the sums on offer were not enough, and Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton cast the net wider internationally after rejecting a NZ$99 million (£50 million) offer from the New Zealand government.

A number venues were mooted including: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Cork, Ireland; Malaga, Spain, but Barcelona eventually won out.

When will the 37th America’s Cup be raced?

The America’s Cup will be held in 2024 in Barcelona. Racing in the 37th America’s Cup Match itself, which is a best of 13 (first to seven) format will start on Saturday 12th October 2024 and could run all the way to the 27th October should all the races be needed to pick a winner.

The America’s Cup will be proceeded by the challenger selection series, which will see which of the five challenger gets the honour to race New Zealand for the Cup itself.

The stated aim was to hold the event in the September-October window, which will allow for the Olympic Games in Paris, France to conclude and also offers a decent range of weather with wind speeds usually around the 9-15 knot mark.

Match Racing

Though the America’s Cup was first raced for in 1851 ( and won by the schooner America from which the trophy gets its name), this race was between a fleet of boats. A challenge by the British in the 1870s was also conducted as a fleet race.

By the 1880s, following a protest from the British, the America’s Cup was decided in a head-to-head match race where two boats sail against each other.

Match racing is a particular skill and encourages aggressive manoeuvres using the rules to put your opponent at a disadvantage. This cut-and-thrust racing, where the only objective is to beat your opponent, has long been at the heart of America’s Cup racing and produces a thrilling spectacle.

Women’s Racing Brings Strength in Numbers

Women's sailing events and regattas are essential for growing the sport, proving an atmosphere where skill development and opportunity go hand-in-hand.

At a recent coed Grandmasters Team Race Regatta, a teammate told me he didn’t understand why there were women-only sailboat races—as if to say, what’s the point? His comment was a brave one in today’s “woke” world, but it’s something that men and women alike probably think about a lot more than they talk about. Yet it raises a valid conundrum as our predominantly male sport pushes toward wider female inclusion: Why isolate women to their own sideshows when the long-term goal is organic integration across the sport?

As I listened to his comments, many of which I’ve heard before, I thought about the fact that several signature women’s events, like the International Women’s Keelboat Regatta and the Santa Maria Cup, are either dead or not as popular as they once were. And later, as I reflected on our discussion, I took stock of our competitors at the Newport Harbor YC Palmer Trophy. Eight of the 54 sailors—15 percent—were women.

“It’s important to have this dialogue,” says Nicole Breault, the first woman to earn St. Francis YC’s Yachtsman of the Year. Breault is a one-design champion and currently competing in the revived Women’s World Match Racing Tour. “Segregation,” she says, “is part of the process of developing a deeper talent pool among women.”

DNC – Did not compete/start Did not come to the starting area.

Scoring: Scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats entered in the series.

DNS – Did not start (other than DNC and OCS)

OCS – Did not start, Violated RRS 29.1 – Individual Recall On the course side of the starting line at her starting signal and failed to start, or broke RRS 30.1.

Scoring: If a boat breaks this rule and is identified, she shall receive, without a hearing, a 20% Scoring Penalty calculated as stated in RRS 44.3(c). She shall be penalized even if the race is restarted or resailed, but not if it is postponed or abandoned before the starting signal. If she is similarly identified during a subsequent attempt to start the same race, she shall receive an additional 20% Scoring Penalty. RRS 29.1 still applies.

UFD – Violated RRS 30.3 – U Flag Rule Disqualification under RRS 30.3 RRS 30.3: If flag U has been displayed, no part of a boat’s hull shall be in the triangle formed by the ends of the starting line and the first mark during the last minute before her starting signal.

Scoring: If a boat breaks this rule and is identified, she shall be disqualified without a hearing, even if the race is restarted or resailed, but not if it is postponed or abandoned before the starting signal. If a general recall is signalled or the race is abandoned after the starting signal, the race committee shall display her sail number before the next warning signal for that race, and if the race is restarted or resailed she shall not sail in it. If she does so, her disqualification shall not be excluded in calculating her series score.

SCP – Scoring Penalty applied Could be RRS 44.3 , appendix T, appendix V, or something in the Sailing Instructions

NSC – Did not sail the course

DNF – Did not finish

RET – Retired

DSQ – Disqualification

DNE – Disqualification (other than DGM) not excludable under RRS 90.3(b) RRS 90.3 (b): When a scoring system provides for excluding one or more race scores, any score that is a Disqualification Not Excludable (DNE) shall be included in a boat’s series score.

DPI – Discretionary penalty imposed RRS 64.6: Discretionary Penalties – When a boat reports within the protest time limit that she has brokena rule subject to a discretionary penalty, the protest committee shall decide the appropriate penalty after taking evidence from the boat and any witnesses it decides are appropriate.

Scoring: The notation ‘[DP]’ in a rule means that the penalty for a breach of the rule may, at the discretion of the protest committee, be less than disqualification.

STP – Standard Penalty A penalty often shown in the Notice of Race (NOR) or Sailing Instructions (SIs) for minor violations. Examples include failing to check in with safety personnel upon return from the race course or to turn in a Race Tracker.

Select Rules from the Racing Rules of Sailing 2021-2024:

RRS 30 – STARTING PENALTIES RRS 30.1 – I Flag Rule If flag I has been displayed, and any part of a boat’s hull is on the course side of the starting line or one of its extensions during the last minute before her starting signal, she shall sail across an extension so that her hull is completely on the pre-start side before she starts.

RRS 30.2 – Z Flag Rule If flag Z has been displayed, no part of a boat’s hull shall be in the triangle formed by the ends of the starting line and the first mark during the last minute before her starting signal. If a boat breaks this rule and is identified, she shall receive, without a hearing, a 20% Scoring Penalty calculated as stated in RRS 44.3(c). She shall be penalized even if the race is restarted or resailed, but not if it is postponed or abandoned before the starting signal. If she is similarly identified during a subsequent attempt to start the same race, she shall receive an additional 20% Scoring Penalty.

RRS 30.3 U Flag Rule If flag U has been displayed, no part of a boat’s hull shall be in the triangle formed by the ends of the starting line and the first mark during the last minute before her starting signal. If a boat breaks this rule and is identified, she shall be disqualified without a hearing, but not if the race is restarted or resailed.

RRS 30.4 Black Flag Rule If a black flag has been displayed, no part of a boat’s hull shall be in the triangle formed by the ends of the starting line and the first mark during the last minute before her starting signal. If a boat breaks this rule and is identified, she shall be disqualified without a hearing, even if the race is restarted or resailed, but not if it is postponed or abandoned before the starting signal. If a general recall is signalled or the race is abandoned after the starting signal, the race committee shall display her sail number before the next warning signal for that race, and if the race is restarted or resailed she shall not sail in it. If she does so, her disqualification shall not be excluded in calculating her series score.

RRS 44.3(c) The race score for a boat that takes a Scoring Penalty shall be the score she would have received without that penalty, made worse by the number of places stated in the notice of race or sailing instructions. When the number of places is not stated, the penalty shall be 20% of the score for Did Not Finish, rounded to the nearest whole number (0.5 rounded upward). The scores of other boats shall not be changed; therefore, two boats may receive the same score. However, the penalty shall not cause the boat’s score to be worse than the score for Did Not Finish.

RRS Appendix T – ARBITRATION

RRS T1 POST-RACE PENALTIES

(a) Provided that RRS 44.1(b) does not apply, a boat that may have broken one or more rules of Part 2 or RRS 31 in an incident may take a Post-Race Penalty at any time after the race until the beginning of a protest hearing involving the incident.

(b) A Post-Race Penalty is a 30% Scoring Penalty calculated as stated in RRS 44.3(c). However, RRS 44.1(a) applies.

(c) A boat takes a Post-Race Penalty by delivering to the arbitrator or a member of the protest committee a written statement that she accepts the penalty and that identifies the race number and where and when the incident occurred.

NOTE: Refer to the current Racing Rules of Sailing and/or Notice of Race (NOR) and Sailing Instructions (SIs) for updated rules, requirements and penalties.

Thank you to John Porter, Lake Beulah Yacht Club member & certified race official, for input on this list.

Racing and Results

Waukegan Yacht Club offers an active racing community. Races usually begin in May and extend all the way into October. Racing is open to members and non-members.

Typically, the fleet is divided into three sections, two spinnaker sections and one jib and main (JAM). Wednesdays are focused on buoy racing with a course set up off shore. On weekends, port-to-port races round out our season.

Click here to see our entire racing schedule .

After all races, the club is open for drinks and dinner. All members and racers are welcome. Come and check out one of the friendliest yacht clubs on Lake Michigan.

Hal - Sailing results made easy

Hal provides the best software to score sailing races. It lets you compute, display and store your results.

Hal's great strength is its ease of use. Race officers have to get results out quickly and have no time to learn complicated software.

Hal is widely used for national and international championships, as well as club racing and open meetings.

Hal is fully compatible with the Racing Rules of Sailing 2021 - 2024.

Hal can analyse each boat's performance relative to its handicap and the turnout statistics of each fleet.

Hal contains the latest Portsmouth Yardstick and National Handicap Scheme for Cruisers (NHC) base numbers from the RYA and the handicaps from Australian Sailing and the Small Cat Scheme .

  • a completely online web app where you input and view all your results over the internet
  • and a Windows application that enables you to compute and store your results offline.

HalSail provides all the functionality you need to enter, edit and view results entirely online. It has the same basic structure as Hal's Race Results and works with any device that has a browser. HalSail is a paid-for service , but with a free introductory period.

Hal's Race Results is the original Hal program. You install it on a PC where it runs offline without an internet connection. Hal's Race Results is available from the Microsoft Store and is free for any club or organisation to use.

How much does HalSail cost?

HalSail has a free introductory period of 45 days. If you set up a new account, you can use all the functionality of HalSail to test its suitability for your organisation.

After the free introductory period, you will be asked to pay a subscription of £80 (pounds sterling) per year.

How much does Hal's Archive Service cost?

Hal's Archive Service has a free introductory period of two months. If you set up a new account, you can use all the functionality of Hal's Archive Service to test its suitability for your organisation.

After the free introductory period, you will be asked to pay a subscription of £50 (pounds sterling) per year.
