One of the important amenities on a boat is the toilet, known as a "head". Everyone can use one at home, but marine toilets are very specific. So, what different types of toilet can you find on a boat? How do you flush it? What can or can't you put down the toilet? How do you avoid spilling the contents of the tank, or sort out a clogged toilet? We'll be answering these questions and more.

How to flush the toilet: mechanical versus electric toilets

Two main types of toilet can be found on a boat: mechanical or electric. Flushing an electric marine toilet is simple. You'll usually find two buttons either marked "fill" or "drain". At the touch of a button, you can effortlessly fill the bowl with water and flush it all away.

With a mechanical toilet, it's a bit more involved and you'll need to know more about how it works. Next to the toilet bowl there is a hand pump and then a switch to change between 2 processes (filling and draining). To use it, you'll need to set the switch and then manually pump the handle up and down until the process is complete.

No matter whether it is electric or not, the method of using the on board toilet is as follows:

  • Fill with the water.
  • Do your business
  • Pump out the water

If you'd prefer an electric toilet when sailing, we recommend renting the latest boat models. With boats from 2005 and older, you can usually forget about it having an electric toilet. The most luxurious yachts come with toilets that work on the vacuum principle (VacuFlush).

What you shouldn't put down the onboard toilet

Some modern boats have an integrated shredder, with manufacturers claiming you can also put toilet paper down the toilet. However, we strongly advise against doing this. Many times we've seen some poor person having to take a clogged toilet apart to clean out the pipes. And it's really not pleasant for anyone. So if you're wondering where to dispose of used paper, we recommend buying smaller trash bags to place next to each toilet which you can then throw away regularly. Those of you who have ever spent a holiday in Greece will know all about this system.

So what shouldn't you flush down a marine toilet?

And we'd be very careful with food scraps.

Heeling and valves: beware of leaks

No valve in the world is 100 % leakproof. And that also goes for the valves on board. If you're heeling too much, the contents of pipes, such as waste pipes, can spill out. Apart from being disgusting, large amounts of water can also damage the boat's equipment, not to mention short-circuit the electrical wiring. So if you are expecting an exhilarating ride, close all the valves on board that could potentially cause a flood in the bathrooms. Valves are usually located under the floor near the bathroom, but inquire about their location when you check-in.

What to do if it won't flush

When a toilet can't be flushed, it is very unpleasant. There can be several reasons for this, so let's look at them and do a bit of troubleshooting.

1) The valves are closed

This usually makes the hand pump very difficult to operate and feels like it's springing back. Solution? Open the valves, but do nothing by force.

2) Too large or solid stools

In the long run, we would advise you to eat more fibre, fruits, vegetables and improve your drinking regime. However that won't help with a clogged toilet. What may help is to try to soak the waste a little with warm water from the shower. This should help soften it so it can pass through the narrow pipes. If that doesn't help, you can also just wait a bit of time for it to naturally break down a little.

3) The pipes are blocked

This is the worst-case scenario and means that the entire toilet system needs to be dismantled. On charter boats, you don't often have any spare parts with you to do this competently, so it's best to contact a mechanic somewhere in port. Expect to pay for this service.

What do you flush with?

Water, of course. But the question is really where the water comes from. On some boats this is from the sea, meaning it is in unlimited supply, whereas on others, it is water from the tank. In this case you'll need to monitor how much you use. Find out about the whole process and method of flushing at check-in.

Use the marina whenever possible

Most marinas have toilets, showers and other sanitary facilities. When moored ashore, we recommend using them.

Over the railing, yes or no?

There is a big debate over this topic, mostly amongst men and sailors who race. It's true that about 90 % of the male population will simply pee over the railing and not go down to the bathroom at all. However, there are skippers who consider such behaviour to be a sign of disrespect for the boat and the marine life. We'll leave it to you, to make up your own mind.

Emptying the waste holding tank

Charter companies will want the boat returned with an empty waste tank. But according to international conventions concerning ecology, you shouldn't dump faeces into the sea near the coast. This is because it pollutes not only the sea, but also the beaches and the coast. In practice, most sailors solve this problem by discharging the waste tank somewhere a little further offshore just before returning the boat. Of course, there is usually a marine pump out station at the pier for you to empty it, although this is not a very common practice on the Adriatic.

What happens on board, stays on board

Be prepared for the fact that the walls and doors on a boat are made of relatively thin wood. As a result, many of the sounds that take place behind cabin or bathroom doors can be heard almost everywhere on board. But don't worry too much about it... we are all human. One recommendation we have though is not to comment on the "performances" of other crew members behind closed doors in any way. It doesn't matter whether it's noises emanating from the bathroom, sounds of sexual passion or even snoring. As they say among sailors "what happens on the boat, stays on the boat".

Sailing Yacht Toilet Use

Believe it or not, the boat toilet use is one of the priorities when it comes to behaviour on a sailing yacht. Not only are the onboard toilets relatively small and uncomfortable , but their flushing system and outlet are quite complicated and sometimes even problematic .

Manual Toilet System on a Boat

Most of sailing yachts offered for charter are equipped with manual toilet flushing systems . They are quite reliable, but still, one has to be careful when using it. Next to every manual flushing toilet, you can easily spot a handle . It is usually on the right-hand side from the lavatory seat. The handle is to be used for flushing the boat toilet, but there is one trick before you start doing it. There is a switch just above the handle. It has two positions.

Sailing Yacht Manual Toilet

The right-hand side position of the switch is so-called ‘stand-by mode’ . In that position the water intake valve is closed, making the toilet safe from clogging. When you are finished with what you were doing, switch it to the left-hand side position.

By doing that, the water intake valve of the boat toilet is open, allowing seawater into the lavatory. Start pumping vigorously and you will see the water filling the lavatory and covering the results of your previous action. At the same time, the entire content of the lavatory will start getting out of it. After you pump it about ten to 12 times, put the switch in the right-hand side position and repeat the pumping. Now, you will support the outlet without pumping in additional water. Repeat the complete action (both sides of the switch) at least three times.  

Have in mind that the outlet hose is quite long and curvy, so it takes more effort and pressure to flush the toilet completely than you might think. When you think there was enough pumping, do the sequence one more time, just in case. The only material allowed in the lavatory is one processed by your body plus toilet paper. Make sure that you do not throw too much toilet paper at a time. Do not forget that the clogged onboard toilet is much greater trouble than you think. Not only is it very complicated and unpleasant to clear it up, but you could also easily be fined for a clogged toilet .  

Electric Toilet System on a Yacht

One might think that electric boat toilets are a better and more comfortable solution. On the contrary, electric toilets are even more complicated than manual ones. They use two pumps (one for water intake and one for outlet) and a spinning knife system . Throwing toilet paper in electric toilets is absolutely forbidden because it gets stuck around the spinning knives. That means that you should install an extra bag for used toilet paper in the toilet and change it daily. Pushing electric toilet too much can easily kill the pumps which is something that you want to avoid. Not every electric boat toilet uses seawater for flushing, so ask about the system while checking - in.  

In case your boat toilets use fresh water , you should know from which water tank, so you can control the water consumption precisely. Think twice before you decide to use the onboard toilet, it is not ‘a piece of cake’.  

The third flushing system is the vacuum flushing system . It seems to be the most efficient, but it is much more expensive than the two systems mentioned above, so one can see it only on exclusive and very luxurious yachts .

Procedure with Boat Toilet Systems

Classic boat toilet flushing system considers direct outlet to the sea. It means that flushing the boat toilet is not recommendable when anchored in the calm bay , especially when someone is enjoying a swim around the boat. The same should be avoided when moored at a marina – use public facilities. Recently made yachts should be equipped with waste tanks . Still, not all toilets are connected to them, so make sure that you ask about toilet installations during a technical check-in procedure.  

Make sure that you empty waste tanks on a daily basis or whenever you think it is necessary. Again, you do not do it either at the anchor nor at the marina. Do it underway, far from the coast. Brimming waste tank might burst or even explode. Going for a sailing trip is quite a project, so is the visit to the toilet on board a sailing yacht. General advice would be to use onshore facilities whenever it is possible.

Choosing and Installing A Composting Boat Toilet 4

I’m convinced boat toilets were designed to make sure boat owners could never be too happy and relaxed. It’s a rare one I’m sure that has never suffered a blockage, critical part failure, or had holding tank issues. And most likely these failures occurred at the most inconvenient time. Cue a nasty, smelly time to resolve the issue. Could a composting boat toilet remove these issues?

In 2015 after several unscheduled toilet fails, we’d begun to think about replacing our sea-water flushing toilet with a composting/waterless toilet. This year, we finally bit the bullet and completed the job. In this article, we review our experiences with a standard boat toilet and the questions we had when it came to changing to composting. We then take you through the build and conclude with our verdict after two months of use.

What Was Wrong With the Flushing Toilet?

Emerald is a Kelly Peterson 44 design. She originally came with two heads (the nautical term for a bathroom), one forward and one in the aft cabin. When we began living on her in Brighton marina, we soon realised we only needed one. The aft head subsequently became a dumping ground for all those things that didn’t have another home. It rapidly got to the point where we’d have to open the door very carefully, poised to catch anything that might fall. After a few years living like this, we chose to rip out all the bathroom fittings, removed the through-hulls and filled in the holes, and built storage into the space.

When we bought Emerald, she had recently had two new Groco K Series, manual toilets installed. As boat toilets go, they rank pretty highly. With a good-sized bowl and standard seat, they were solid and well built. To pump out, we pulled a lever back and forth, pressing down with our foot on another lever to flush water through, then removing our foot and continuing to pump the handle to clear the bowl.

In general, they worked well. But, after 15 years of full-time use, major parts were failing. We could only source replacements and service kits from the USA with postage generally costing more than the parts themselves.

Holding Tanks Vs Pumping Out

Holding tanks store toilet waste until you can get to a place to empty it. At the time of writing, Turkey is the only country in the Med that specifies that a holding tank for black water must be installed on visiting yachts. As we knew at some point we’d want to visit Turkey, we installed a holding tank and diverter system whilst in the UK. The diverter valves allowed us to choose between sending waste from the toilet to the tank or pumping straight out to sea, as well as being able to pump the tank out.

However, there are very few pump out facilities in the Med, other than in Turkey. And even in Turkey, not all were suitable for pumping out from a small yacht.

This means, that in reality, boats go a few miles offshore and empty their tank there. Ever seen a brown slick on the water surface? Most likely it’s from a boat that has recently emptied it’s tank.

Also, what happens if the tank becomes full when you’re anchored, but the weather doesn’t allow you to get offshore? The stark reality is, that it will be emptied out into the anchorage. And what about a blocked tank? Luckily, we’ve never experienced this, but we know of several who have had this unpleasant experience.

Why Do Boat Toilets Fail?

Whenever we pump out urine into the sea, a chemical reaction takes place between the seawater and uric acid, forming a calcified scale. The end section of the outlet pipe is below the waterline, and subsequently always contains seawater. So, over time, the scale builds up on the inside of the pipe until eventually, only a tiny hole remains. We never put paper into the toilet, choosing instead to have a waste bin. But as the hole shrinks, it becomes harder and harder to pump the solid waste out.

Preventative Maintenance

After a couple of unscheduled toilet fails, we set up a system of preventative maintenance.

  • On a daily basis, we flushed vinegar into the toilet before bed and gave a few pumps on the handle to distribute it around the system. This slowed down the scale’s rate of growth but didn’t stop it.
  • We pumped freshwater through every few days, to remove the uric acid from the system. But we didn’t have sufficient stores to fully switch to freshwater for every flush.
  • we cleaned the solid scale from the pipes,
  • replaced any pipes that were really blocked,
  • used the Groco service kit to replace worn valves and membranes.

But even with all this care, the toilet would still fail, and usually at the hottest time of the year.

What Is a Composting Boat Toilet?

I recently learned that composting toilets should really be called waterless toilets.

They work by diverting liquid and solid waste into separate containers. At a time of your choosing, the liquid can be poured away. The solid waste remains for as long as your box takes to get full. Generally, some form of covering material is used – for example coconut coir, sawdust, or cat litter. Over time, natural bacteria break down the waste, until eventually, it is safe to use as a fertiliser on plants. However, the solid waste can take a year or more to fully compost, and we don’t have the space to hold onto our waste for that long.

To Compost or Not to Compost, That is the Question

We first began to think about a composting boat toilet in the winter of 2015-16. It seemed to fit with our environmental aims for “greenness” and would offer many benefits:

  • no more blocked pipes,
  • removal of meters of pipework to free up space,
  • simple maintenance and no costly spares kits,
  • blocked pipes and nasty toilet failures would be a thing of the past,
  • no more pumping out into the sea,
  • silent use.

When we first starting considering switching to a composting loo, there were very few models available, with the market leaders being Nature’s Head and the Air Head. The cost of these units at £800 plus delivery, made our eyes water. We just couldn’t justify that within our budget.

However, in the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of people looking to live off-grid, both on land and on the water. This has increased demand for composting toilets and allowed new suppliers to come into the market. Five years on, we had a much wider choice of products, many with much lower costs than those original models.

The Sniff Test

We’ve never had a bad smell from our toilet, but I’ve been on boats that had a constant toilet smell, and I knew I couldn’t live with that. However, I wasn’t fully convinced that a composting loo, particularly one in the confined space of a boat, would not smell.

So, since the idea had first planted itself in our brains, we’d been on the lookout to meet another boat with a composting toilet. But they turned out to be rarer than hen’s teeth, and it was only in October last year that the opportunity for a live sniff test presented itself.

“Can I smell your loo?”

This question would not rank high in the list of things to ask new friends, but thankfully they knew exactly where I was coming from. I had a good sniff around and, amazingly, there was zero smell. I was sold. We could now move on to whittling down the list of potential suppliers.

What Did We Choose?

Our choice was a build-it-yourself components kit from Strumpet and Trollop , a British company. It ticked all the boxes on price, availability, simplicity, and fit to our space requirements.

All the components are made with anti-bacterial materials. The kit contained:

  • a 10l liquids bottle with handle and cap,
  • a 23l solids box with lid,
  • the separator. As a treat to ourselves, we ordered it with a custom, turquoise, glitter spray to match the sink top tiles,
  • a modesty bung that keeps the solids bucket covered between use,
  • a soft close, plastic white seat,
  • a roll of compostable bags.

The Installation

It would not be a simple installation. We had to remove the old toilet and its network of pipes and investigate and repair the rotten floor. Then there was the construction of the new box, with numerous physical limitations to consider: the curve of the hull, the size of the collector boxes, and the length of our legs. Plus throw in the fact that nothing is ever square on a boat.

Bucket and Chuck It

With the bathroom in pieces, and having ripped out our second head, our only toilet alternative during construction was to use a bucket. We also had nowhere to shower. But this was ok, there are showers ashore. Except then the boiler ashore broke. Inadvertently, we were doing the installation during the coldest winter that Portugal has experienced for 10 years and the freezing weather made it beyond bracing to take cold showers. We briefly tried showering on deck using hot water in our PortaShower, but the weather soon put paid to that too.

The poor weather also impacted the construction as there were days when Colin couldn’t work outside. The result was that construction took a little longer than expected and occasionally tested our emotions. Certainly, it would have been an easier job whilst in a marina with bathrooms on hand. But we survived these minor hardships, And as Portugal went into a full Covid lockdown, it didn’t matter if we smelled a little more than usual, as we couldn’t go out and meet people.

Removal of the Old Toilet

Colin removed the bolts from the Groco toilet base and ceremonially placed it on deck until we can find it a new home. He then ripped out the base on which it had stood which had rotted due to water leakage. We could now clearly measure the available space for the installation.

The first item of repair was to identify the source of the water that had soaked into the toilet base and rotted the wood. Without fixing this, we would be leaving ourselves open to the water damaging the new install which would be largely wood based.

Water had also soaked into the bulkhead wall, which could have caused structural problems if it had been left unchecked.

The source of the water was condensation running down the inside of the hull. Normally, this would flow down into the bilge to be pumped out at some point. But over time, the drain holes had become blocked with debris and the water had nowhere to go and gathered under the toilet base. Eventually, the wood soaked up the water and began to rot.

The repair involved enlarging the drain hole to the bilge and reinforcing the floor where a rotten lump of wood was removed. The bulkhead was strengthened with epoxy, hardwood battens, and a sheet of ply.

The toilet surround was built from good quality ply, using 10mm for the base and walls, and 12mm for the top. Once the pieces were cut to size, we gave them a coat of undercoat followed by one of white gloss. As a decorative front, Colin made battens from iroko in a tongue and groove style. We’ve been carrying around the iroko planks since we headed south, so it was good to finally find a project for some of them. These were then varnished to give a glossy finish.

We reluctantly had to cut a piece out of the teak shower grate in order to get the box to fit without it being too high.

For the time being we’ll keep the through hull and have used it for emptying the shower sump.

  • A handheld detail router which was used for edging the front of the box and cutting the rebate for the separator.

Adding a Fan

We were in two minds about whether to install a fan, but after the first few weeks of use, we noticed condensation was forming inside the solids box. We wired in a 12v computer fan, permanently on, that extracts air and pushes it through a Leesan carbon filter into the bilge. The filter was repurposed from the holding tank. Since installation, there has been no condensation.

The Verdict

We’ve now been using the toilet for two months. We’ve got into a routine of emptying the liquid bottle once a day and the solids box every 8 to 10 days. The separator has a shiny wipe clean surface, which has proved easy to keep clean.

We chose to use coconut coir as a cover material; after going, we sprinkle a handful over the top of the waste. The coir is kept in a bucket with a lid to keep creatures out.

There’s no smell.

There were teething problems, but they were minor and we’ve since ironed them out:

  • The first time we used the toilet, we let the solids box get too full and the bag split as we were removing it. Luckily the split happened before we’d fully lifted the bag out of the box. However, there was still intense yuck to be cleaned up.
  • Positioning: This is more an issue for women than men as they have an inbuilt aiming device. The separator directs liquids into the pee bottle and there is a hole to access the solids bucket. It’s important to keep the liquids and solids separate to prevent smells? It took a little experimentation to find the right spot in which to sit to get things to go to their correct location.
  • Due to the space limitations, the box is a teeny bit high off the ground for our short legs. I’ve since got used to this but it has the potential to be awkward in a big sea. If it is an issue, we’ll make a step.
  • We haven’t used the loo whilst heeled yet. A lean-to starboard should be ok, however, a lean-to-port might cause pee to flow into the solids bucket. Ideally, the loo would have been placed fore and aft, but we don’t have the space for that. But, given how little time we spend heeled over, this is a very minor problem.

The total cost of the installation was approximately £400, which breaks down as follows:

  • Strumpet and Trollop kit (including modesty bung and glitter spray): delivered to Portugal (pre-Brexit) £284
  • Wood supplies £50
  • Paint and brushes £20
  • The iroko wood, varnish, and epoxy came from existing supplies that we already had onboard.

Ongoing usage costs are approx. £3.50 per month, made up of:

  • Coir blocks £1.50 for a 650g brick that provides approx. 3 weeks of usage.
  • Biodegradable bags £0.50 per bag

Fascinating and very useful account Nichola! Several weblogs I follow regularly have discussions around the travails of marine flushing heads versus desiccating heads, plus the troubles around overboard waste disposal. We are about 2 months out from ordering a new build compact (34ft) catamaran which has 2 heads, with the one on the owners’ side being mounted in a very space challenged position (at a 45 degree angle in order to allow passage to the separate shower stall). We are definitely planning to replace the default flushing heads on the less specially challenged guest side with a dessicating toilet but are unsure if the space constraints on our side will allow for it … so as soon as I read your piece I emailed Strumpet & Trollop (what a delightful name choice!) enquiring whether they might consider the challenge of a custom made casing to fit our boat. Am now waiting for a response … glad for your signposting as had already given up on the other marques on this niche market.

I am currently installing a separator from kildwick.com on my new build 34ft cutter here in Cape Town Town South Africa. I have some questions after longer use. 1) Any issues with the heat/humidity of summer? 2) Some users talk of fly/insect infestations? 3) Why exit the fan inboard vs outboard and do you pull the air from outside or just the heads? 4) After 8-10days filling the solids “bag” how do you store aboard then dispose ashore? 5) Lastly any tips on solids “bag” and what about loo paper? Hi Alasdair, glad we could be of help! To answer your questions: 1. So far we’ve been in max temps of around 35 centigrade and haven’t had any issues. The fan helps move the air around and the coconut coir soaks up moisture. 2. We did briefly have flies so we started sprinkling diatomaceous earth into the container which has solved the problem. Every time we start a new bag, we sprinkle a spoon of the powder into it. You should be able to buy it from garden centres or online. A little goes a long way. 3. It was easier to exit the fan inboard as we didn’t want to make a hole in the coach roof. The air is pulled from in the heads, but goes through a carbon filter so there are no smells. The lack of smell is the most amazing thing I’ve found with this type of loo, I was really expecting to have to get used to a fusty smell, but there’s nothing! 4. We take the bags ashore straight away to dispose of them. Where we’ve been since installing this toilet there are communal bins along the streets and in marinas/harbours. We have been talking recently about whether we would dump the contents minus the bags into the sea if far offshore (as boats with holding tanks do) but it’s not something we’ve had to do yet. 5. Bags… We started using biodegradable bags but they weren’t very strong, which resulted in a near disaster when it came to emptying one time! So at the moment we use sturdy, non degradable bin bags that are large enough to fill the solids box. We place this bag into a second plastic bag (one of those supermarket sturdy shopping bags) to transfer ashore – the second bag can then be removed and reused once at the bins. Our paper goes into a small separate bin which is emptied every few days. We did the same for paper when we had a flushing loo too. We’d prefer to use degradable bags but we just haven’t found any that we trust yet. The Guadiana is wonderful – hopefully you can visit there sometime. Raritan Sea Era Review

For 2024 the Raritan Sea Era continues as the best all-round choice for raw water electric marine toilets. If you want the best freshwater fed toilet, check out my “ top marks ” pick. As a brand, Raritan is a marine sanitation manufacturer with over 50 years of history. They tout the Sea Era model as lightweight for its size at 44 pounds (ca. 20 kg). As well as, a compact toilet with a small footprint. Proven by the small base dimensions and ability to rotate the bowl 90° in confined areas.

Energy consumption for the Sea Era is good, the amperage draw is 18 amps, expect to need a 25 amp circuit breaker.

12 Volt Integral Diaphragm Pump

What sets the Sea Era apart from the other raw water models is its single integral diaphragm pump. This single pump takes care of both water intake and discharge. The simplicity of a diaphragm pump means less mechanical parts to break down.

Plus the intake and discharge are at opposite ends of the entire motor/pump assembly. This special design ensures no possibility of cross contamination.

I like the flexibility of installation, due to ¾ inch inlet ports on either side of intake pump. As well as interchangeable hose barb fittings (two straight and one 90°). The inlet pump can lift water from four feet below the toilet and can run dry without damaging the pump. Raw water models also comes with an in-line water strainer.

Reliable Discharge

Breaking down waste comes from a tough stainless steel macerating blade. To deliver optimal performance the Raritan Sea Era uses a full size joker valve to reduce clogs. Another installation bonus is the two discharge port sizes. It comes with two nozzles, either a straight combo 1-1½-inch fitting or a 90-degree 1½-inch fitting. The Sea Era’s discharge section of the pump will handle a vented loop up to five feet in height.

Operation Of Sea Era Head

Using the Sea Era toilet is simple, with single push button that uses less than a quart of water to flush. Actual flush performance is excellent for weekender use. Noise wise it’s a bit loud which I expect at this price point. It makes up for the noise by being lightweight, having a small footprint and quality parts. Add to this the seat is soft close and comfortable to sit on.

Bottom line:

Boaters will want to choose the Raritan Sea Era because it’s a great value for the price raw water fed marine head. Especially as a step up from a manual marine toilet. Inside the components and materials are a cut above the other brands. While noise is apparent, the Sea Era is comfortable, easy to use/maintain and reliable for the long term.

Jabsco Deluxe Flush 17″ Marine Head Review

Searching for a raw water electric head that feels like home and near silent? Then you should like the Jabsco Deluxe electric head. The model for this review is the 17″ tall model with slant back to fit on angled hull. If you need to install on a raised platform, Jabsco offers a low-profile 14″ model too.

*Note: If my review came out a few years ago, I would’ve pick the Jabsco model to be the best picks. Jabsco began as an American brand, but since 2011 Xylem Flow Control owns it. So, these toilets are now assembled in Mexico using parts made in China. Current versions aren’t bad, they just aren’t as durable as older models. The big plus for most boaters is that Jabsco parts are plentiful and cheap to buy.

Brands Top-Of-The-Line Model

The design of the Deluxe Flush is all about bringing the comforts of home into your boat. It does this by hiding the flush pump, wiring and plumbing inside the pure white vitreous china bowl. To replicate a household experience you sit on a wood seat with a baked enamel coating. The slant back mounts against the sloping hull or in a corner, taking up less space in the vessel.

Energy consumption or the amperage draw is 20 amps, so Jabsco recommends a 25 amp circuit breaker.

‘ One Touch’ Control Pad

For flush control, it uses a multi-function ‘one touch’ control pad with a modern panel cover. Each of the four buttons control both the time and the amount of water for flushing. Use either engage fill, quick flush, flush, or empty. The quick flush mode uses only about a cup of water, and is for flushing urine. Whereas flush mode uses about a half-gallon and flushes twice. Jabsco boasts the silent performance of this toilet, I don’t agree. Both the noise and speed of flushes were average compared to the others.

Downsides Of The Jabsco Deluxe

The big issue I have with this marine head is the lack of access for maintenance. If you ever need to gain access to pump components or plumbing it requires quite a bit of disassembly. It’s also the most power thirsty and heaviest unit, which is a concern for small boats. For these reasons, combined with Jabsco manufacturing moving offshore it lost points.

Pick the 2024 Jabsco Deluxe if you are a sailor searching for a modern head that fits compact spaces. Sitting on it feels like you are back on land and the one touch control panel is premium. However, good looks and cool features don’t outweigh the lack of easy maintenance in rough waters.

Johnson AquaT Electric Toilet Review:

In 2024 the Johnson AquaT is the best bang-for-your-buck marine head. Especially if you are looking to upgrade from a Porta-Potty or manual toilet. Johnson (Pumps) was from Sweden but the brand is now a subsidiary of SPX Flow. Today the manufacturing is in North Carolina, USA.

The model reviewed today is the compact “silent” AquaT electric marine toilet. An ideal use for this head is for small vessels that don’t have extra power to spare. Energy consumption is a mere 13 amps and Johnson recommends a 25 amp circuit breaker.

First Impressions

Sitting on the AquaT for the first time, it feels like a simple inexpensive marine head. The materials for this head are basic in quality with a bowl that’s ceramic and a seat made of plastic. It’s not a place I want to spend a long time, but it has a purpose.

Install is somewhat straight-forward due to how lightweight it is. As well as having the mounting holes visible around the base. But beyond mounting the included instructions are confusing. Speaking of the base it’s large, which begs the question, how is this considered a compact toilet? I guess using a round seat instead of an oval one is their reason for calling it compact.

Anyways, you need about 25 inches (63.5 cm) of wall height to fit the head with the seat up, which is standard. In total, the head reminds me of a regular manual head, except for the enhanced electric flush control.

3-way Flush Control

To flush the AquaT you get a simple two-button, 3 way wall switch. It’s designed this way to help lower water consumption. Below is how the wall switch functions:

• Button 1: Is a single function, discharge and rinse. • Button 2: Dual function, either rinse toilet or discharge toilet.

You can’t control the amount of rinse water per flush, but Johnson says it averages about half a gallon per flush. The toilet achieves this low amount of rinse water from the Aqua Jet diaphragm pump. For discharge, it uses a centrifugal macerating pump with built-in automatic back-flow prevention. The inlet and outlet hoses are standard sizes at 3/4 inch (inlet) and 1 1/2 inches (outlet).

Does It Have A Silent Flush?

Nope, it’s not even a quiet flush. In fact, the amount of noise that emits during flushing is jarring. Meaning if you have guests sleeping next to the head, a flush with this toilet will wake them up. But for the cost of the head and inexpensive material quality, the level of noise is typical.

Bottom Line:

If money is tight but you want to move up to an electric head, the AquaT is a good option. It’s not really compact, but it’s easy to install, use and maintain. For this price that’s amazing, but keep in mind it’s not silent.

Jabsco 37010 Series Marine Toilet Review:

For mid-range budgets the Jabsco 37010 series electric head is the most popular on the market. This model is a good option for weekender boats that don’t see everyday use.

Power consumption for this model is decent at 16 amps with a 25 amp circuit breaker. Sailboat owners particularly like the Jabsco 37010 series due to its rotating bowl. Being able to turn the base 90 degrees after mounting is great for fitting the head in confined spaces. Connecting the outtake hoses is easy since Jabsco offers both 1 and 1.5 inch options, while intake is 3/4 inch. For international buyers the outtake hose ranges from 25 to 38 millimeters, with a 19 mm intake.

Durable Mid-Range Construction

Made of vitreous china with a household seat it’s more than comfortable to have a relaxing read on it. Raw sea or lake rinse water comes from an internal self-priming pump. Solid discharge breaks down via an impeller pump with built-in backflow preventer. One weak spot in the 37010 Series is that a single seal separates the intake and discharge pumps. If this seal fails, it can recirculate black water into the intake leading to odor issues.

To use this boat head, you press and hold a single wall switch to rinse and flush in one go. The actual flush is strong but the noise is abrupt and loud. It’s not as loud as the cheaper AquaT from Johnson Pumps, but it is louder than the other reviewed models.

Changing Reputation

As I mentioned in the review for the Deluxe flush model, these toilets are no longer built in the USA. As a result, I’m seeing a lot more long term complaints than compliments of Jabsco. The big issue for Jabsco is customer service from headquarters is lacking. Which is quite disappointing for a brand as well known as Jabsco.

Buy the Jabsco 37010 Series if your sailboat needs a dependable mid-range boat head. Doing so, gets you get reliable but noisy performance.

Raritan Marine Elegance Toilet Review:

My top pick in 2024 for best freshwater electric toilet is the Raritan Marine Elegance. Being a freshwater fed model Raritan includes an internal solenoid valve. The head area of your boat can be very daunting for guests not familiar with how these toilets work. But this looks like a household unit, operated by a single button. So guests and owners alike will feel relieved using it.

Power consumption: 18 amps at 12 Volts with the safety of a 25 amp circuit breaker.

First-rate Build Quality

Seeing the Raritan Marine Elegance for the first time is a treat. Its modern and sleek, fitting against the slanted wall of the hull. The tiny 8 ½” x 9 ¾” footprint leaves tons of room around the unit. Likewise, it hides all pump components in side the unit. Including the self-priming rinse pump and Vortex-Vac discharge pump.

Cleaning it is simple as it’s made of one-piece vitreous china. Plus it comes with a soft close toilet seat with stops to prevent the seat from shifting while in use. The only part I question on the Marine Elegance is how shallow the interior of the bowl is. In typical calm waters operation is fine, but I worry about sloshing in rough seas.

I should mention, boaters often confuse this boat toilet as a vacuflush style head. It’s not, it’s a macerating electric toilet with a pump that Raritan calls a “Vortex-Vac.” This is a powerful pump that creates a vortex which pulls the flush out of the toilet. As well, it has a robust macerator that grinds nearly anything except wet wipes. This model uses onboard pressurized freshwater via a solenoid valve and rinse pump. Despite the Vortex-Vac and macerator blade it’s still incredibly quiet in use.

One recommendation I have is to upgrade the flush control to Raritans’ Smart Switch . The single button is easier for landlubbers but it doesn’t allow you to control flush volume. Instead, I prefer the smart control panel which offers extra functions such as:

  • 1. Empty Only: Press Empty Only button to evacuate the bowl. Discharge pump runs as long as you hold the button.
  • 2. Water Only: Press Water Only switch to add water in the bowl. Inlet water solenoid/ pump runs as long as you hold the button with a seven seconds limit. This time limit prevents overflow of the bowl. To enable again, you need to first press the Empty Only button.
  • 3. Normal: Press normal button once and timed flushing cycle starts.
  • 4. Water saver: Press this button and a special water saver cycle starts.

Choosing the Raritan Marine Elegance means you get unrivaled sanitation for your vessel. It has superior flush performance and is the quietest in use compared to all the others reviewed. Plus I couldn’t find many complaints about this boat head other than install mistakes. Something we are all guilty of from time to time.

TMC FO-1560 Marine Toilet Review

For sailboat owners the TMC raw water fed electric toilet is a compact, mid-range option. TMC, a Taiwanese company, markets the FO-1560 as a direct competitor to the Jabsco 37010 Series. Build quality between both is very similar except the TMC provides a cheap plastic seat. Where this electric head beats the Jabsco is it has a smaller footprint and weighs 3 pounds (1.36 kg) less.

Middle Of The Pack Performance

The FO-1560 series is a near match in appearance to the Jabsco 37010 series as well as in performance. The bowl for this toilet is vitreous china with a high capacity bowl. As mentioned the seat is plastic and a standard oval shape. The seat is the real downfall of this boat head. In choppy waters the seat moves around and if the pump malfunctions black water could slosh out.

Keep a small cup next to the head and add a bit of water to the bowl before doing any “solid” business. This extra slug of water helps to soften the solids before the flush.

Downsides Of The TMC Electric Head?

Opting for cheaper marine heads means you have to except some caveats. The TMC FO-1560 is no different so here are the issues to keep in mind.

First, it’s best to not try to flush toilet paper in this boat head. Instead, use a sealable trash can to separate soiled paper, this will lower the work of the macerator.

Second, being raw or sea water fed system odors and rust in the bowl can become a problem. To reduce this try closing the inlet sea-cock and flushing the system with freshwater. For storing the boat, close both sea-cocks and fill system with freshwater. This really helps lower stink in the hoses and rust in the pump assemblies.

Third, some users complain of back-flow problems. But this is usually due to install mistakes. If you install below the waterline, TMC recommends installing two vented loops. One in the inlet line and another in the outlet line.

Sailors should pick the TMC FO-1560 if they want a compact, mid-range macerating head made in the USA. It’s lightweight and easy to install. Especially for boaters familiar with Jabsco products. In total, the FO-1560 is a tough basic toilet with a few caveats.

What Is An Electric Boat Toilet?

An electric boat toilet is an upgrade to the traditional manual pump toilets. Instead of using arm strength to flush the bowl, users engage an electrical switch to flush. The design of electric head uses either one or two pumps inside the system to deal with waste.

As a whole they use a dry flushing method, unlike wet household toilets. A dry method will flush waste away with pumped in water and continue to drain until there’s no standing water left in the bowl. As a result, they are much more suitable if you expect the boat to be swaying or pitching heavily.

For installation, plumbing isn’t much different from a manual head. Wiring needs to be on a separate dedicated circuit with its own breaker and wire size is very important.

How Does An Electric Boat Toilet Work?

A basic electric toilet or “head” operates via a user engaging an electric switch to start the flush process. For guests that aren’t used to marine sanitation an electric system is as easy as it gets.

Located on the bottom there is an electric motor which drives a pump case. This case may contain a single dual action pump or two separate pumps. The most common is a two pump system because it lowers costs to the buyer.

Inside a two pump case is an inlet water pump to suck up water from a raw or fresh source into the bowl. Downstream of the bowl is the outtake macerator pump with a blade that grinds up waste. It’s like a garbage disposal except with an added feature to push waste out of the bowl. Some will also have a discharge impeller to help push contents up as well as out. A big advantage depending on the location of the toilet in the boat.

Another important component in the macerating pump is a “joker valve.” The function of this valve is to keep dirty black water from back-flowing into the head.

Before and after the toilet are hoses attached to an inlet and outlet valve. If it’s a raw water system these would be the intake sea-cock and outlet sea-cock. For a freshwater system, inlet water comes from your onboard freshwater. Then directs waste out to a holding tank or overboard if beyond the legal distance limits.

Buying Factors For Electric Macerating Heads

Confirm the hose fittings on your new toilet match the intake and discharge seacocks. For instance, some toilets come with 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) inlet and 1 inch (25.4 mm) outlet hose fittings. Yet many standard seacock hose fittings have a 1.5 inches (38.1 mm) discharge. As well as a 0.75 inch (19.05 mm) intake. Some come with adapters, but if it doesn’t, expect to replace the entire plumbing hose system.

Flush Efficiency:

Internal parts need to be robust and durable to meet and maintain flush efficiency. Some rinse pumps are self-priming and can run dry, others can not. A macerating pump is vital to break down solids. So the material and part quality is vital for long term use.

Water Consumption:

The amount of water your toilet uses has a direct effect on vessel weight. Especially if you discharge to a holding tank. For example: If it uses 1-gallon per flush, four adults could fill up a 16-gallon holding tank in a single day. Look for heads that provide precise flush control, I like smart controls for this very reason.

Toilet Weight:

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

I realize that Moscow is on the Volga River, which connects to the Caspian Sea, but I’m wondering how foreign vessels can reach it? Or do foreign travel companies just buy a yacht that’s already "in the system"?

From the Caspian Sea, Gary, yachts come up the Volga then on to the Oka River and enter a tributary call the Moskva ("Moscow" in Russian) River. Alternate route is Volga to man-made Moscow Canal (which connects Volga to Moskva River). The big superyachts can’t get into the city limits because the river is only 3 inches deep. Just outside of the city, however, the water is 6 meters deep, perfect for large yachts. Yacht passengers easily travel into the city by limousine. (I imagine thoughts of hovercrafts, etc are a consideration for someday…) James Bond, anyone?

Introduction

As a first step, we want to tell you one Russian joke.

In Moscow, one man takes his smartphone and says, “Ok Google, I need to go to the toilet. Where I can find it?”. A voice of the smartphone answers, “Hey man, you are in trouble.”

The toilet problem is very strong in Moscow, and foreign tourists suffer more than Russians. You have almost no chances to find public WC, and no matter are you ready to pay or not. We will give you a few advices on this page. As locals, we know everything about this problem.

Many tourists try to find WC in subway stations. If you follow this idea, you will fail and will lose your time. There are toilets in the Moscow subway, but they are available only for personnel. We do not know any precedent when they let somebody in.

Every year we have a same comedy. The Moscow government declares their new plan of creation public WCs at every station. Every year nothing change. We the Russians usually say in such situation, “a cart is still standing on its place.”

The Google Maps knows a few of WCs, but it is not a decision of the problem.

WCs in trading centres

It is also a good idea. You should remember a few features.

Not every trading centre has own WC. The Sanitary Rules of Russia demand it from every trading centre larger than 10700 square feet (1000 square meters). We also do not know how some trading centres drive a coach and four through. No comments.

The Rules say every trading centre must have a WC, but the Rules do not say how many. So, you will probably get into a situation when there is only one toilet in a large trading centre. In this case, you will need to search for it.

We made a few photos of public WC in one of trading centres in Moscow. See our small gallery below.

WCs in restaurants

There is no any law in Russia that force a restaurant to let everybody using the WC. So, if you enter a restaurant and want to use a toilet, you will need to ask for a permission. Fortunately, Russia is a civilized country, and we never saw a precedent when somebody rejected.

Even if your request is rejected, you will order a cup of coffee, became a client and use the WC. We ask our readers to respect the law and act according to the law.

How to ask about WC in Russian

It is easy. The English word “toilet” sounds very close to the Russian word “tualet”. Even if you say in English, everybody will understand you. Do not hesitate to ask; Russians are usually ready to help.

We have only one advice for this situation. You should show that you a foreigner. If you will not do this, then people will be thinking you a local and will be explaining you something in Russian. Just say something in English to show you are a foreigner, and say the word “toilet”. You will receive an answer by a finger same as it shows the photo on the left.

Of course, it was a joke above. By the way, nowadays, you can find a few monuments to Vladimir Lenin in Moscow, but we do not recommend to follow in the direction he is showing. We the Russians walked in this direction for 74 years, and we still do not understand, where we were going and why.

You can think Russia is a wild country because of this toilet problem. This opinion is wrong. If you visit any private business centre, you will see a fine WC. If you visit a flat of ordinary Russian citizen, you will also find it is clean and in order.

But, if the government is in charge of something, then you will see a long list of problems that are not resolved from year to year. This is Russia.
