Allmand 31: Florida Born and Bound

  • By Gregg Nestor
  • Updated: January 26, 2011

Allmand Boats of Hialeah, Florida, was originally a powerboat manufacturer, but during the energy crunch of the 1970s, it turned its attention entirely to sailboats. Walter Scott and T. R. Allmand collaborated on the designs, and in 1979 the company introduced three sailboat models. The Allmand 31 was, and continues to be, the most popular design. It remained in production until 1985, when the industry-wide recession of the 1980s forced Allmand to close its doors for good.

Overall, the design of the Allmand 31 is quite conservative yet contemporary. From the steep, slightly concave bow to the near-vertical stern, the sheer is almost flat. The long, low cabin trunk has a slight step-up aft. Beneath the waterline, the boat has a long, shallow keel, and the rudder is mounted on a partial skeg.

While the hull is solid fiberglass, the deck is cored with end-grain balsa. The deck mates to the hull on an outward-facing flange. This joint is bonded with resin, fastened with self-tapping screws, glassed over on the inside, and covered with a vinyl rubrail. Ballast is internal and is either cast iron (as part of the standard rig) or lead (for the tall rig).

Most of the Allmand 31s were built with a tri-cabin layout. One cabin, with the V-berth, is forward. The head compartment and a pair of hanging lockers are aft of that. The second cabin is the main saloon, in which a U-shaped dinette faces a straight settee berth and a U-shaped galley to starboard. The third cabin is aft to port. It contains a double berth, a hanging locker, and a fold-down chart table.

Under sail, the boat accelerates quickly, but windward performance is hampered by its wide beam and shoal draft. Although the 31 will tack through about 90 degrees and is extraordinarily stiff and sails almost level, it makes noticeable leeway. Its best points of sail are off the wind.

The most common auxiliary is the 16-horsepower M20 Universal diesel. The 21-horsepower M25 was available as an option, and either one is adequate in most conditions.

As well as checking for age-related problems typical of older boats, a prospective buyer should examine the keel cavity for signs of a hard grounding, especially on boats with cast-iron ballast. If a break in the outer skin has let in water, the cast iron can suffer significant and costly corrosion.

The strongest features of the Allmand 31 are its generous interior and its spacious cockpit. Its moderate rig is easily managed, but the shoal draft and the smallish sail area make the Allmand 31 a better candidate for coastal cruising than bluewater sailing. The boat is solidly constructed and doesn’t look that dated, but the builder wasn’t known for sailboats, and this probably accounts for the 31’s current depressed price: $14,000 to $30,000 will get you a very roomy 31-footer.

Gregg Nestor, the author of three books about sailboats, has maintained a lifelong interest in all things aquatic.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Does anyone Have any info on an Allmand 31? I'm looking for any info on Quality of construction, Problems to look for when purchasing, Sailing characteristics, etc... Can any one help!!!!!!!

I owned an Allmand 31 for 18 years. Enjoyed every year I owned it. When I traded it in for my Hunter 356, my cousin went to the dealer and scooped it up. The Allmand is a good boat, you won't win many races with it but it is a well built safe vessel If you go to my web site ......www.mastconfusion.com, it will lead you to my cousins web site and his e-mail address. He will converse with for hours about the Allmand and get you in touch with the Allmand owners web site and they can answer all your questions

Many Thanks Appreciate the info. I'm still looking at the same boat. Dave ;D ;D ;D

Review of Allmand 31

Basic specs..

The Allmand 31 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.16 - 1.26 meter (3.81 - 4.11 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an engine.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 95 liters (25 US gallons, 20 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Allmand 31 is 2.03, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Allmand 31 is about 193 kg/cm, alternatively 1085 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 193 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1085 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 29m 2 (312 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Been a long time since I have posted here but I'm getting back in after being boat-less for 2 years. Looking around yachtworld.com for a Niagara 35 or CS36, I came across this lady. 1984 Allmand 35' Tri-cabin Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com Decently appointed from an electronics point of view, I know she'll need a rework in the galley as they've ripped out the stove. Seems to offer lots of storage for a single guy or a couple living aboard. Decent draft for a 35' boat (only 5') with a keel halfway between a a fin and a full keel. Should be stable in a seaway. I like the offset companionway as it makes the quarterberth larger. Any thoughts? Any experience with this builder before I send a surveyor down there from Toronto

It would help to know what your intentions are for the boat. My impression is that the Allmand is a step down in overall quality from both the Niagara and the CS, but the price of course is quite good.

The initial goal is to refit as required in Toronto and then take a little trip up to my cottage on Georgian Bay by way of the Welland Canal and then back to Toronto, as a shakedown cruise. The real trip will be heading south for a while by way of the St. Lawrence Seaway, Newfoundland. The almostfull length keel makes me think she'll track straighter than the CS, assuming the rig is balanced.

Assuming you balance the rig on the CS or Niagara, they should track just fine too. I had a Niagara 35 and quite liked the long fin keel setup. If you are going no further than Newfoundland and back and watch your weather the Allmand should be fine, but I don't think it is as well-built as the other boats. A longish keel makes fine manoeuvring in marinas and the like 'interesting'. Ask me how I know, our boat has a draft of 12' with the board down. The result is that the keel, where the board goes, is quite long. I can turn to the right really well, turning left - well some 90° turns have turned out to be 270° to the right. I would not send a surveyor from Toronto to look at the boat. Would find a local one (not someone recommended only by the selling broker). It would be cheaper.

I'm almost positive that's not an Allmand 35, that's the 31. The 35's had a different galley lay-out. I have the 31, as does David_E. Regarding the build quality, they are decent boats, but I would agree that they aren't up to snuff with CS or Niagra. Several of the Allmand owners have ventured pretty far with theirs (see, e.g., ISSUU - Southwindsmarch2010 by SOUTHWINDS Magazine and A medical crisis leads Marti to buy a sailboat and learn to cruise « The Women and Cruising Blog ).

That is a self-reported list. Check out sailboatdata.com and they pics on Yachtworld and Sailboatlistings

I am not saying your surveyor is not entirely capable, just that it adds significantly to the boat cost. If I wanted to get to BC I would be looking at the CS, Niagara, or something else of that ilk. If you don't mind, what sort of budget are you considering? I had a Max-Prop on my Niagara - a thing of beauty and a joy forever. I could do tight figure-8s in reverse with total control.

There's the boat you want and then there's the boat you end up with. That being said, budget is in the range of US$30-40K. I'd rather spend a little extra to get a boat that has updated electronics and is properly equipped for cruising (heating and a decent stove). But if I saw a decent boat at a decent price, I don't mind doing the work myself. By training I am a theatrical lighting and sound tech and thanks to my schooling, electricity doesn't scare me. I can operate anything from a monster table saw to a sewing machine. I also designed and manufactured electronics, so I have that side taken care of.

Dave_E

Hi Patrick, This is most definitely a 35 footer... destroyer bow and sloped transom. The interior is very similar to the 31 (but sorry to say not any bigger at all) and yes, very liveable aboard for 1 person... easy. I would think hard about open water adventure with an Allmand. That keel is NOT some hybrid between a full keel and fin keel. It's a shoal keel and has it's pros and cons. One con of which I am familiar with, is it's rolling moment. The shoal keel doesn't do much to help stop rolling motions once it gets started. It was made to be a coastal cruiser where by it can duck into a shallow water anchorage. But yes, on a nice day an 18' day sailer can handle open water. The engine is a Universal M30. It is still wired with the ammeter and I'll guess all the poor factory "trailer plug style" engine harnesses, which are a fire hazard, (the ammeter needs to be removed and the wiring harness plugs taken out). There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the Universal, so long as it has been maintained, (I have the 5424, basically the same engine). From the pics, it doesn't look bad. The Allmand is a solid boat (overbuilt a tad by todays standards), might not be the fastest in the crowd. Let me know if you have any questions. Dave

I like the layout below decks. Having the head and galley centrally located makes a lot of sense to me. I'm pretty immune to boat motion. I got seasick once (back in like 1975) on a powerboat but since then nothing. I like having a shoal draft keel. My last boat at 30' had a draft of 5'3" and was a nightmare getting in and out of Toronto Island Marina. Nothing says adventure like touching bottom 3 inches (not feet) from the dock when I was delivering her to her new owner. She must be a tough boat if you sail one in the WA area. Not exactly know for calm conditions.

  2. Classic Plastic: Allmand 31

The Allmand 31 was, and continues to be, the most popular ...

  3. ALLMAND 31

The Allmand 31 has a Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 13.44, a ballast displacement ratio of 33%. Combined with only a 4'' draft this design relies too much on it''s beam for stability. Our boat is a C&C 35-1. It has a SA/DR of 19.2 and a ballast/displacement raio of 48% and for that matter a more desireable (for sailing) beam length ratio too.

3 posts · Joined 2020. #1 · Apr 15, 2020. So I'm on the hunt for a boat and I've stumbled upon the Allmand 31. It's in terrible shape and needs a survey done but it's still something I have the time and money to consider. So far the reviews I've seen about it are limited although cruising worlds review called it a classic plastic.

Info / opinion on Allmand 31 ... Not very fast but I'm told by owners they sail well. Great interior, very roomy (beamy hull), appears comfortable and versatile. Great cockpit, again, roomy, large. Companionway offset to starboard provides a nice spot to sit mid-ship facing aft yet out of the way. Asking price range that I've seen seems to run ...

The Allmand 31 was a hand laid up boat and very stout. Her major design flaw was excessive free board that caused the bows to oil can. Look in the bow to see if FAB matt was used to stiffen the bows. This was done when I came on board, a '79 model may not have this feature.

I just got done moving my Allmand 31 in and out of four different slips and one long dock (fuel dock), including a 180 degree turn inside a fairly tight fairway. 18. Review of Allmand 31

The Allmand 31 is equipped with a finn keel. The finn keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.16 - 1.26 meter (3.81 - 4.11 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
