Azimut Magellano 25 Metri

When Azimut Yachts wanted to enhance its Magellano series with larger models, the Italian builder returned to UK-based designer Ken Freivokh, who was responsible for the first Magellano 74 model 10 years ago. The result is the Magellano 25 Metri, a raised pilothouse design.

Freivokh says a length overall of around 80 to 90 feet is a real sweet spot for yacht designers like him because the scale is sufficient to create proper proportions. The 25 Metri’s profile is elegant and timeless, and there’s something of the 1930s streamline moderne movement about it. The similarity could be the boldness of line, the glazing shapes, or perhaps something as simple as the horizontal stainless-steel banding that rounds off the rim of the wraparound swim platform. Maybe it’s the wooden battens on the after corners of the superstructure.

There’s a modern take on color with the exterior that Azimut displayed on Hull No. 1. Straying beyond whites, dark blues and gray metallics for hull paint is often contentious, but the hull here is a soothing blue-green metallic—what the Italians call ottanio and the English call teal. I like it.

The outdoor spaces are everything they should be. Side decks connect the foredeck terrace with a conventional cockpit aft. In that cockpit are double longitudinal sofas, a transom blind, and a step between the stern garage door and a beach terrace. Up top, the split-level flybridge is protected by the opening hardtop above and has two helm seats to port, a bar with a pair of stools, booth dining and an aft area open to interpretation—in this case, sun loungers.

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri

The yacht’s interior concept comes from Milan-based architect Vincenzo De Cotiis, who dressed Hull No. 1 with a distinctly 1950s flavor. It sounds kitschy, but it’s uber-cool. The majority of the decor bounces off various off-white textures: laminates, fabrics, lacquer. The result is light and bright. And the yacht’s unusual hull shade influences various marble and velour upholstery choices (or perhaps the influencing was the other way around). Horizontal surfaces, such as those running down each side beneath the picture windows, are a softer, yellower faux marble. Other detailing includes brown-leather sole tiles, mottled rugs, irregularly shaped ceiling panels, faux brasswork, and lots of glass and mirrors, often distressed. De Cotiis loves the appearance of wear and tear.

There is a sightline to port from the aft deck all the way through to the windshield and beyond, an important design element from Freivokh. The stand-alone sofas and the rotating marble-topped dining table in the main salon are mostly items from De Cotiis’ own collection.

The galley is forward with white cabinetry, and with charcoal-shade work surfaces and backsplashes. Most appliances are Miele, and there’s a Mabe refrigerator. The galley is a semiformal space, open to owners and guests, but capable of being closed off by a pair of mirrored doors set at a shallow angle so as not to directly reflect the yacht’s symmetry. A banquette is adjacent to the galley and is ideal for crew, who have their own door to the portside deck for access to quarters in the bow.

A reverse-spiral staircase with a day-head beneath it climbs up to the raised pilothouse and flybridge. The helm console is to starboard in the wheelhouse with touchscreen instrumentation from Raymarine. A mini couch here tracks back and forth electrically from an inaccessible spot behind the staircase to a snug spot virtually amidships, and in doing so, it closes off the stairway, setting up a great pilot berth right next to the wheel.

Driving this yacht is all it should be. The Magellano 25 Metri is offered with twin 1,400 hp or 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels, which deliver quoted top speeds up to 25 knots. I got on board Hull No. 1 at the beginning of this past October off Portofino, Italy. The boat had standard engines and was over half-load with eight people aboard. With those V-12s spinning 2,300 rpm, and the Humphree electric fin stabilizers and transom blades set to autotrim, I recorded a top hop of 23.6 knots on various headings and a total fuel burn averaging around 142 gallons per hour.

At a cruise-all-day 2,000 rpm and 19 knots or so, the engines burned 101.4 gallons per hour, which, allowing for a 10 percent reserve, means a range of around 350 nautical miles. With full tanks and engines purring at 1,000 rpm, there’s a potential 1,500 nautical miles to be enjoyed at 9.5 knots.

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri

We had a calm sea state and a breeze measuring slight to zero—not the harshest of conditions to see what the yacht’s dual-mode hull could do. The hull design comes from naval architect Pierluigi Ausonio and is named for a double-chine geometry that works well at displacement and semidisplacement speeds. The prop shafts spin in half tunnels on each side of a skeg keel.

I can report that the hull is light on the helm and turns precisely. The build quality also inspires confidence. While the specs suggest that the yacht is all vinylester, glass fiber and foam, in reality, the flybridge, hardtop and garage door moldings are carbon fiber, a material that helps a lot in stability versus utility trade-offs.

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri

The lower deck, accessed from a starboard-side staircase abaft the galley, accommodates eight guests in four staterooms. The master is just abaft amidships and has hullside windows, a sofa to starboard and twin sinks to port, with a separate head-and-shower compartment. The VIP, which is forward of amidships, has a transverse berth to port, as well as an en suite head and walk-in closet to starboard. Between the master and VIP, the guest stateroom to port has a transverse double berth, and the stateroom to starboard has twin berths that convert to a double. All the staterooms come with Loro Piana bed linens, dark-grain Venetian blinds and Bose entertainment systems.

Hull numbers 2 and 3 of the Magellano 25 Metri are US-bound and will have the bigger MANs as well as upgraded 21 kW generators. At the time of this writing, five hulls had been sold. While the Magellano 25 Metri has a distinct style, it appears that it also has global appeal.

Magellano 25 Metri: On board the new Azimut superyacht

The Magellano 25 Metri is a beautiful blend of design and technology – but its greatest gift may be that of total relaxation, says Simon de Burton

Without invitation I reach for a temptingly tactile chrome handle, intent on sliding open the dark smoked-glass door to Azimut Yachts’ new Magellano 25 Metri. “Stop!” implores brand manager Federico Lantero. “Not yet – I want the interior to be a real surprise.”

In the meantime, Lantero suggests I continue my tour of the decks, having already encountered a few surprises within the first five minutes of setting eyes on the new flagship of the Italian builder’s Magellano collection in a marina in Fano.

Despite the fact that it’s brimming with state-of-the-art features (it even has a Covid-fighting, NASA-approved BCool sanitising system that changes the air every hour), the Magellano 25 Metri has a comfortingly old-fashioned look about it. Its lines were penned by Ken Freivokh , whose name is associated with yachts such as Perini Navi ’s 87-metre Maltese Falcon and the modern classic sailer Mikhail S. Vorontsov , to name just two.

In 2009 Freivokh was called in to create the look of the first Magellano, a new range intended for serious passage-making. His templates formed the basis of every subsequent model – although developing the final appearance of the smaller boats was tasked to Dutch design house Cor D Rover Design.

Freivokh’s aim was to create an evergreen design and, using the type of lateral thinking that people who are among the best in their field tend to have perfected, he opted for a classic hull shape with an almost vertical bow topped with a heavily glazed superstructure to evoke the feeling of a sea-going penthouse.

Narrow, oval windows lend light to the lower deck’s interior while also imparting a retro feel that could place the boat back in the golden age, and slatted teak panels attached to either side of the superstructure aft (a Freivokh signature) both soften the lines and complement that classic character.

“We started with the Magellano 74 almost 12 years ago and have since had input into developing the entire range,” Freivokh says. He was called back in to create a clean-sheet design for the 25, which, he says, had nothing to do with making a boat that looked fast, but all about combining form and function. “Everything had to exist for a reason, with the main aim being to create a yacht that a family or a couple would really want to spend time exploring with and living on, and, because the 25 is not a huge yacht, I was anxious to maximise every opportunity to use the available space as efficiently and as interestingly as possible.”

Which explains why, while wandering around outside in advance of the big interior reveal, I notice just how cleverly all of the exterior spaces had been thought out. On the aft deck, an extensive seating area with its own dry bar and worktop spaces – and a nifty hydraulic table that converts from “coffee” to “dining” at the touch of a button – can be protected from prying eyes by a drop-down glass wall privacy screen.

Further back, at the swim platform, an electrically operated deck extension can either create an infinity terrace or allow for easy tender access. At the bow, meanwhile, there’s more well-thought-out convertibility that enables the space to serve as an extensive sunbathing spot or an equally spacious lounge area.

And then there’s the flybridge seating, reached via an elegant spiral staircase from the aft deck, that offers further opportunities for serious relaxation and is again equipped with its own bar and kitchen areas found to the rear of the bridge and shaded by a laminated carbon fibre hardtop supported primarily by a single aluminium upright.

That feature is a result of the lightweight Carbon Tech programme introduced nine years ago by Azimut Yachts to enable the upper parts of its boats to extend to extravagant heights without having a detrimental effect on the centre of gravity.

I had been walking around taking all this in for the best part of an hour before word arrives from Lantero that the time had come for the big moment he had been so keen to surprise me with.

Standing in the prescribed position at the rear of the aft deck, I watch the big glass panels glide open and, as predicted, look on in amazement: for a yacht of its size, the saloon of the Magellano 25 Metri looks absolutely enormous and, with the doors left open to the aft deck and the swim platform seating area beyond, the old cliché of bringing the outside in really does come into effect.

“It seemed essential to open up the internal space at every opportunity,” Freivokh says. “That’s why we went for as much height as possible in the saloon and made the connection to the flydeck really open. Optimising the available space also means the boat can be configured for different markets; a US buyer, for example, probably won’t want to have to go downstairs to a separate galley, whereas a Middle Eastern buyer wouldn’t want the galley to be at the centre of things.

“The main aim, however, was to design a boat that an owner could keep and enjoy for many years – the thinking is that, if it looks right now it will look right in a decade or more.”

But the Magellano 25 Metri is far from being a one-man design. Having created the look and maximised the volume, Freivokh passed the baton to celebrated Italian artist and architect Vincenzo De Cotiis , who had a very specific purpose: to make the yacht not just a container for art but a work of art in its own right.

For anyone unfamiliar with his work, 62-year-old De Cotiis has long been one of the darlings of the international architectural scene, both for his furniture designs and for his ability to adapt run-down industrial spaces and turn them into chic hotels and lofty retail destinations, often using repurposed materials.

One of the materials De Cotiis particularly enjoys working with is also one with which the boat industry is extremely familiar – glass fibre. Rather than disguise it as something else (which is often the case) De Cotiis has celebrated GRP in numerous fixtures and fittings aboard the Magellano 25 Metri, as well as in the creation of a large artwork hanging over the owner’s bed and a smaller one that graces a corridor.

With its large, light-filled area and all-round sea views, the boat’s huge saloon must have represented the perfect blank canvas for De Cotiis, who adopted a theory of organic geometry to fit it out with irregularly shaped furnishings, among which are fibreglass tables laminated with resin and infused with bronze powder to create a series of unique finishes.

De Cotiis paid particular attention to the lighting, combining lamps and ceiling-mounted spotlights with special illumination beneath the sofas, giving the impression after dark that they are floating mysteriously above the saloon’s decidedly plush carpeting.

He even designed the exterior furnishings, invoking the styles of the 1960s and 70s to create a minimalist, laid-back vibe that’s infused with modern-day luxury thanks to the exclusive use of Loro Piana fabrics throughout the boat, from the saloon to the cabins and everywhere in between.

While hull No 1 serves as a showcase for the De Cotiis touch, not every Magellano 25 Metri will be the same. “It will be up to each client to commission specific artworks, if that’s what they want, but the De Cotiis design will remain evident in the architectural framework of the furnishings, cabinets and so on,” Lantero says. “If, however, an owner wants different finishes – veneers, say, instead of plain white – we can accommodate that within the De Cotiis philosophy.”

Regardless of the interior specification, the Magellano 25 Metri is so comfortable that it’s easy to forget that it is actually intended to take its passengers and crew on some serious voyages.

With 1,400hp MAN V12s, it offers a 25-knot top speed and 18-knot cruise or can go 700 nautical miles at a more sedate 12 knots. And it’s when covering those longer distances, especially in rougher seas, that the Magellano 25’s special Dual Mode hull by Pierluigi Ausonio Naval Architecture comes into play. The double-shaped chine is designed to reduce fuel consumption by lessening drag at different speeds according to where the boat is sitting in the water – and has the benefit of enhancing comfort.

But throttling down to the boat’s 20-plus knot speed is not, it seems, the way to show it at its best. “A speed of 20 to 22 knots is easily attainable, but that is not really how the boat is intended to be used,” Lantero says. “The type of buyers the Magellano 25 is meant for are those who like to cruise at perhaps 10 to 12 knots and really enjoy the pleasure of navigation. At that speed, the yacht feels really natural and beautifully relaxed. It is a pace that reflects the very chic, sober and timeless nature of the design.”

This is a yacht that whispers elegance and luxury and one which really does seem to envelop and relax those aboard, inducing a remarkable feeling of calm and a desire, quite simply, to have a thoroughly lovely, peaceful time. And that, surely, is the true art of creating a perfect yacht.

MAGELLANO 25METRI

An exquisite new jewel hovers between sky and sea, Where time is suspended and the journey begins. Like a wave among waves, the sinuous lines of the interior Blend in perfect harmony with the outside world. A glorious panorama of the shimmering sea Stretches as far as the eye can see. An extraordinary light infuses the space, permeating the air, Enveloping you in its reassuring embrace Every shape unveils its unexpected beauty, Every element reveals an unexpected detail and wonder. You are at the helm of infinity. Cruising has never been so unconventionally perfect.

Interior design by Vincenzo De Cotiis

Surprising and unconventional, the Magellano 25 Metri is a masterpiece that seamlessly fuses art and the sea. The interior lines were designed by Vincenzo De Cotiis, an architect and designer with an attitude that is hovers more towards the art world. One of world’s foremost exponents of collectible art, with the Magellano 25 Metri, he applies his unmistakable hallmark touch to a yacht for the very first time. Given his longstanding love of fibreglass which he has used in the creation of many of his works, there is a wonderful symmetry in the collaboration, given that for Azimut Yachts, this material is an essential construction element. Fluid, surprising forms, an out-of-the-ordinary conjugation of the sea and its surroundings, together with light-flooded spaces all combine to make the Magellano 25 Metri a truly extraordinary boat that seems suspended in time and poised to weigh anchor at any moment in a quest to rediscover the simple essence of travel.

Timeless beauty

The exteriors of the Magellano 25 Metri have been designed by Ken Freivokh, a renowned figure in the world of boat design and the name behind some of the world’s most stunning megasailers. The vision that guided his design of the lines of the boat was wonderfully simple: to create an object of timeless, exquisite beauty, immune to passing fads and trends. A superstructure entirely in glass, conceived to recreate the idea of a penthouse overlooking the sea, is the central element around which the entire design revolves. Slatted teak panels on either side of the aft area of the deckhouse add an indefinable personality to the boat’s silhouette. An elegant spiral staircase leads to the flybridge, where the hard top is supported by minimal central mast, while the near-vertical prow reminds us of the Magellano’s outstanding credentials when it comes to seaworthiness.

Unexpectedly exquisite

The unconventional beauty of the Magellano 25 Metri manifests itself in a myriad of ways, and maybe none more so than the choice of Vincenzo De Cotiis and Azimut Yachts to thrust fibreglass into the spotlight with a specially developed variant for this project. Usually a material that is forced to maintain a low-key profile, here it is meticulously worked, embellished and polished, to become a stunning, innovative stylistic element that unashamedly takes centre stage. Instead of its usual coarse unfinished appearance, it has been transformed into something noble, profound and tactile. With a surface the colour of parchment and a depth that recalls the warmth of amber, it takes on a natural, precious aspect, whilst certain elements are dusted with a bronze powder, scattered by an artisan’s hand, and creating a glimmer that brings to mind the wonderful, unique imperfections found in natural stone.

At one with sea

The Magellano 25 Metri sits proudly atop the water, with its solid form full of the promise of long, memory-making voyages where you will finally have the chance to savour time and rediscover its true sense. Indeed, it is this spirit of travel that Vincenzo De Cotiis has explored and brought to life with a décor, design elements and layout that capture the originality and unique approach of the sea traveller and their willingness to embrace the extraordinary moments and experiences of every journey. The fluid geometries of the boat spring from the idea of recreating and integrating marine elements in a natural way throughout. Inspired by the concept of the gentle form of the waves , the seating, forms and even the depth achieved in the spatial dimension all evoke the movement of the sea’s surface . This connection with the sea is also seen in the choice of colours with an intense blue that veers towards green recalling the hue of the water at its deepest points , whilst the use of wood and white are unmistakably marine. Light is another fundamental element of the design. The vast windows, combined with grand prospective depth, make the most of the natural light that floods the interiors, creating a joyous, uplifting environment

The innovative cockpit design features a retractable panel that can be lowered to leave a transparent parapet, transforming the space into a glorious terrace with unimpeded views onto the sea. The same panel, which also serves as the garage hatch, then unfolds to create a spacious bathing platform by the water’s edge.

Hotel Mode is just the simplest definition of an otherwise sophisticated and ingenuous innovative way to enjoy time at the anchor at zero emission in the most peaceful silence nature can offer. While in Hotel Mode on board systems are fed by dedicated lithium ion battery packs in lieu of generators for up to 6 hours during the day and up to 8 hours at night, when the electrical power need of the yacht naturally decreases (range varies depending on weather conditions as well as personal use of electrical loads).

Carbon-tech generation

Active trim control.

Interceptor technology provides a smooth, precise Auto mode that automatically takes care of all trim adjustments, guaranteeing the best fuel efficiency at every speed and an optimal front view. It delivers trouble-free handling and a system without any risk of corrosion or leaking oil.

Double chine dual mode hull

The new Dual Mode Hull generation. Smooth and unslammable, it ensures comfortable navigation and excellent seakeeping even in moderate sea conditions. The upper chine provides a larger beam at low speed, assuring an excellent dynamic stability while, at higher speed, the flow separates from the lower chine which is shaped for least resistance, thus reducing the friction and increasing range and fuel efficiency.

Extraordinary silence

The Magellano 25 Metri boasts levels of onboard comfort that you would normally only find in much larger yachts. From elastic [flexible] couplings connecting the engines and inverters to acoustic floating solutions for the floor, walls and ceiling of the owner’s suite, the emphasis is on reducing noise and vibrations to an absolute minimum.

BCOOL system

The BCOOL system, based on NASA-developed technology, ensures constant and thorough air circulation and sanitation on board yachts, together with full air exchange. Not only does this innovative solution eliminate harmful microorganisms from ventilation shafts and the environment, it also regulates the air temperature and humidity level for maximum cabin comfort.

Azimut Yachts | Magellano 25 Metri, a masterpiece of art and marine engineering

azimut yacht magellano 25 metri

From Superyacht Digest OCTOBER ISSUE 2020

INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED ARTIST AND ARCHITECT VINCENZO DE COTIIS DEBUTS IN THE NAUTICAL SECTOR INTRODUCING A NEW AESTHETIC DIMENSION IN FULL RESPECT OF THE GREAT HERITAGE OF AZIMUT YACHTS’ MAGELLANO. WITH KEN FREIVOKH BEHIND THE TIMELESS ELEGANCE OF THE CHIC AND SOPHISTICATED EXTERIOR LINES, MAGELLANO 25 METRI HAS BEEN DESIGNED WITH A SPECIAL FUEL-EFFICIENT DUAL MODE HULL.

Known and appreciated all over the world, Architect and Designer Vincenzo De Cotiis debuts in the nautical sector signing the interiors Magellano 25 Metri, part of the Grande collection. In this project he has expressed the characteristic features of his stylistic figure – open spaces, fluid and airy, material contrasts and an unusual and advanced expressive language – preserving the idea that a boat belongs to the sea and not to designer. The main challenge was not to betray the marine character of the boat, that is trying to interpret the nautical object with an ainternationally renowned artist and architect Vincenzo De Cotiis debuts in the nautical sector introducing A NEW AESTHETIC DIMENSION IN FULL RESPECT OF THE GREAT HERITAGE OF AZIMUT YACHTS’ MAGELLANO. with Ken Freivokh behind the timeless elegance of the chic and sophisticated exterior lines, Magellano 25 metri has been designed with a special fuel-efficient Dual Mode hull.rtistic approach without letting art prevail on functionalities and livability on board.

azimut yacht magellano 25 metri

The original, innovative, creative – artistic – approach by Vincenzo De Cotiis Architects has led to the creation of an amazing design project, fully in harmony with the refined and timeless exteriors of the Magellano Collection. The collaboration between Azimut Yachts and Vincenzo De Cotiis Architects marks an important new chapter in the evolution of design on board, giving life to a very original expressive refined language with a great character, which, destined to become a new tendency.

Among the surprise elements, there is the ornamental use of glass fiber, which De Cotiis who is a passionate about new materials, often marked by time and wear, has used for years to create objects with organic shapes and material surfaces. For the first time, therefore, the fiberglass is ennobled and assumes a non-structural but purely decorative function: worked on sight, expresses its raw soul in contrast with decidedly more precious materials, as De Cotiis used to do for his refined works, halfway between art and design.

azimut yacht magellano 25 metri

With the aim of tracing a new aesthetic dimension without distorting the functional characteristics of the entire range, De Cotiis has done a skillful job that, having passed the simple furnishing process, has become an articulated architectural project capable of combining aesthetic and stylistic research with the focus on perfect environments for life on-board.The result is an extraordinary layout for a 25-meter boat, which offers great comfort and guarantees absolute privacy between shipping magnate and cabin crew, essential elements for very long cruises, typical of the Magellano fleet.

The partnership with De Cotiis springs from the brand’s desire to reach a new milestone by creating for the first time ever a yacht that isn’t a container for art, but a sea’s work of art.

azimut yacht magellano 25 metri

The Vincenzo De Cotiis Architects Firm has worked hard on the perception of the depth of spaces, creating environments without excessive separations, both to allow a continuous visual contact with the sea, both to propose a wider scope than the typical size of a boat. The most strikingly original setting is the huge saloon in which De Cotiis strives to increase the perception of depth. Designed to offer a view of the sea from any point, the space is no longer confined by a classic rectangular floor plan and is flooded throughout with natural light.

With this same purpose, fluid shapes characterize even the furnishings and much attention has been given to create a sense of continuity. The dining table can be arranged lengthwise and the living area is based on the concept of organic geometry, with different shapes sofas that offer different depths. The interior furniture recalls the shape of the dry bar outside creating an indoor-outdoor connection in order to get the sensation of a unified space overlooking the sea. Still on the Main Deck, the stairway is clad with mirrors to “dematerialise” it and, by reflecting the light, the view of the sea became an inner part of the yacht.

azimut yacht magellano 25 metri

The materials used in the living room area raises on the classical nautical world: wood in lacquered and cannulae version, brass, fiberglass and some mirror inserts. The dunnage is made of wood. The table and other loose furniture items are part of the De Cotiis collection.

The entire environment is characterized with a brass insert that runs along all the surfaces of the yacht accentuating the perception of the curves and outlining the various plans of support in fiberglass while the tall parts are made of cannulae wood, placed vertically in order to enhance the feeling of height. The green upholstery is the only element that adds color in contradiction to the white coverings.

azimut yacht magellano 25 metri

In the night area on the Lower Deck there are four cabins, including two VIPs, one double and one with sliding double beds. In the owner’s suite, thanks to the inclined position of the walk-in closet, the space extends out, while the mirror coating makes the volume disappear and reflects the light and the starboard panorama, creating highly suggestive changing optical effects.

azimut yacht magellano 25 metri

The crew quarters are independent, with direct access from the galley to avoid interference with guests’ movements and ensure a high level of privacy. Magellano 25 Metri is also one of the few yacht in its category to have direct access from the internal wheelhouse, located in a raised position on the main deck, and the external one on the fly so to facilitate the work of the captain and crews.

Artificial light is a key element, with a lighting system designed to create a soft, warm mood. The carefully thought out light design created by the artist involves not only lamps and classic ceiling spotlights, but also and even the sofa bottoms to give the furniture the appearance of “being suspended”.

One of the points of contact with the designer, a leading proponent of collectible art on the international scene, is a shared interest in fiberglass, as an essential construction material for Azimut Yachts and one of the favourite material of the artist. On this yacht fiberglass is given new life as a key element of the design. For Magellano 25 Metri, De Cotiis used a special type of resin and thanks to an elaborate artisanal process, the result of multiple layers and embellished with a bronze powder, he has given life to surfaces of parchment colour, characterized by a pleasant clouded effect and inclusions that in somehow recall those typical of some precious stones.

The “artistic fiberglass” is joined by other materials and types of wood to create a highly appealing play of contrasts: brushed Verde Alpi marble, dark walnut wood, carpet, polished brass, lacquered wood and ribbed wood.

The furnishings feature flowing shapes and a lot of effort has been put into creating a sense of continuity expressed by seamless, curving lines.

Ken Freivokh offers his own personal take on exterior styling based on the concept of timelessness, driven by the desire to create an object of evergreen beauty and appeal, far from fleeting fashions and passing trends.

The central element around which the entire design revolves is the fully-glazed superstructure, created to convey the feeling of a penthouse overlooking the sea. The standout features include the (non-slip surfaces on the transom) wrap-around steel detailing in the stern area and the retro-style windows in the hull. The yacht’s silhouette is given even more personality by the louvers on either side aft of the deckhouse. The elegant spiral staircase leads up to the Fly Deck, where the hard top is supported by a minimalist central mast. The vertical bow underscores the remarkable seaworthiness of this model. While the bow area can be experienced differently, the stern, thanks to a pivoting hatch mechanism, offers the charm of an Infinity Terrace from which to contemplate the charm of the sunset without any visual impediment.

Magellano 25 Metri is a full member of the Carbon Tech Generation and represents another milestone in Azimut Yachts’ pioneering research into the use of a material that offers some undisputed benefits: thanks to a targeted use it is possible to expand the volumes on board while maintaining excellent levels of stability. There has also been a concerted effort to reduce noise and vibration to guarantee the highest levels of comfort; the owner’s suite is set up as a floating capsule and the introduction of an elastic joint between motors and inverters prevents vibrations generated by the propeller axis from propagating inside the boat.

The Dual Mode hull, designed by the firm led by Pierluigi Ausonio, ensures safe and comfortable cruising even in rough seas. The double shaped chine joint with a skeg reduces consumption at different cruising speeds and cushions wave impact. As these features show, Magellano 25 Metri has been designed for long-range cruising even in unfavourable sea and wind conditions.

The yacht is fitted with two MAN engines rated 1,400 horsepower each (or alternatively 1,550 HP), with V-Drive in-line transmission. Stabilization is provided by a Humphree electric fin system. The yacht has a top speed of around 24/25 knots and a cruising speed of 21 knots.

GIOVANNA VITELLI TELLS SYD MORE ABOUT THIS PROJECT AND NEXT PROJECTS

azimut yacht magellano 25 metri

At the Miami Yacht Show last February 2020 we sat down with Giovanna Vitelli, Vice Presidente of Azimut Benetti Group, to talk about this new product. The idea at that time was to present the yacht in Venice during Biennale of Architecture, unfortunately the pandemic changed all the plans. The boat was introduced in Portofino in September at a private event, where the shipyard also announced Marco Valle as new Group CEO, with the aim of creating synergies and developing ever-better efficiencies between the two brands. We also took this opportunity to deepen this project again with the management.

SD: “With the interchange between art, yachting and design, which you have been introducing for some time with Azimut Yachts, you have started a new process of modernization in boating, trying to change the order of things and bringing innovation. What do you gather from this experience, what reflection have you made?”

GV: “This experience led us towards the desire for novelty. Boating was still too tied to old – outdated – schemes, both in terms of space distribution and in stylistic and decorative terms. On the one hand, the need to propose something different was deeply felt inside our company, on the other hand the sector was demanding a sort of change. We were referring to an audience with a language that was no longer adequate to their current lifestyle; the habits of our customers were changing, not only because over the years their lifestyle evolved, but because generations are changing, and consequently, we need to renew ourselves. We are not new to the exeperience of contamination between art and design. This approach we have already tested has led us to a further step and to the decision to involve a name like De Cotiis for the interior design of the new Magellano 25 Metri”.

SD: “Why did you choose this boat as your new frontier for design experiments?”

GV: “Because the Magellano was historically born with the mission of revolution-evolution. When we designed it in 2007, before launching it on the market two years later, we wondered if customers, in the near future, would continue to be attracted by speed, traditional flybridge, glamorous and sexy aspects of the yachting lifestyle, or if, instead, they would have changed their habits developing a different way to go to sea. For example, living the sea as a sea dog, a sailor who gives much more importance to the journey and less to the destination, who loves comfortable and intimate spaces because the time to spend on board will be long. We therefore tried to create a new product by applying the logic of the trawler.

The Magellano was born with the idea of being a niche product, it ended to be a great satisfaction also in commercial results. In the end, investing in new solutions has proved us right! The Magellano was the first crossover in the small boat segment. Even today this category, in all its forms, is the one that is performing best on the market, the Magellano can be considered the first model in history. Thanks to the important contribution in the development of boating, and for being recognized as a very innovative boat, we have chosen the Magellano as a model with which to try to go further by offering new visions. We thought of involving an architect who was a signature that could lead to the creation of a real work of art”.

SD: “These contaminations contribute to enrich the product and to bring new values, are there, however, some limits that can not be overcome?”

GV: “Yes, absolutely, there is a very clear limit, and for this reason our search for contamination and dialogue with architects outside the nautical world has been very long, broad and complex. We spoke with many architects before deciding for De Cotiis; he is one of the very few architects outside our sector, who is able to bring his ideas while respecting the boat as an object of the sea, without considering it as an exhibition space and without bending it to the needs of the design object. A boat is not a New York apartment, it must always remain in dialogue with the environment to which it belongs, its architecture must suggest its use and dialogue with the sea in aesthetic and functional terms. De Cotiis’ approach was not to create special spaces to host works of art, if that had been the case we would not have been able to define this boat as an artwork. The stylistic-artistic characteristic of De Cotiis lies in the contrast between rich and poor materials, which find their most extreme expression with fiberglass, a material that he prefers in many of his works. We gave him carte blanche, while collaborating in certain aspects that as a construction site we know should not be touched. The project stems from a conversation with him around the concept of a somewhat retro boat, to which to give a contemporary allure, and the stylistic-artistic element on this specific unit is exceptional and captivating and helps us to carry on a story of innovation that began with the first model ten years ago”.

SD: “After your big event in New York last year in May, what should we expect now in terms of new marketing initiatives?”

GV: “We never stop, this year the biggest launch is represented by the Magellano 25 Metri. We planned to present the boat in Venice with an event during the Architecture Biennale but, you know, what has happened globally. Due to the pandemic we had to change all plans. This year started with a great success. We can count ourselves fortunate that in February we could launch the Verve 47 in great style with an event at the Miami Yacht Show, launch which incredibly exceeded all our expectations. We wanted to challenge the American market by bringing a 47-foot outboard, a real mission for an Italian brand. This boat has an extremely revolutionary hull for an outboard and boasts a layout that combines the funniest – enjoyable – aspect and the practical sense of those who know boats well, and the American people know them very well, that’s why the boat has had a lot of success. This year marks another milestone for our group, we have just presented the first Benetti Oasis 40m in Portofino, whose sales results are currently very satisfying”.

SD: “In 2019 you celebrated your 50th year of activity for the Azimut Yachts brand, you have reached an important stage. What do you expect from the next decades?”

GV: “A new era will open but we do not expect major revolutions. It will open for various reasons, first of all we are witnessing a generational shift that does not only concern the family change at ownership level, but also the designers’ world, and in fact we have new collaborations with new names for new products. A third aspect concerns a change in the way of thinking; boating has been evolving, this already happens for some years, and it will evolve more and more in favour of eco-sustainability and those new themes that can be more attractive for the new generation of yacht owners. We are studying new lifestyles and developing strategies to be able to approach them with greater interest. Both our products and the target customers are the subject of our continuous brainstorming sessions; for sure, the DNA of our company, philosophy, ethics, those will not change”.

SD: “Every new path needs a phase of elaboration and thinking first and, secondly, experimentation, what are you thinking about today?”

GV: “Yes, that’s correct, this change we are facing fuels our need to experiment, which is the real big issue today. A major theme that is still at the center of our experimentation is the diesel-electric engine. If we think that this has not yet expanded in the automotive sector, we can imagine that boating requires more time and more research. That said, as a company we are required to initiate experimentation processes that lead to real innovations in this sense. We are experimenting in this direction and we are doing it not from a marketing perspective but for real product development. The outboard segment interests us a lot, with the Verve 47 we tried to enter the market, now we will develop new models. Azimut Yachts traditionally follows the philosophy of experimentation; we have always had the desire to understand new social dynamics that allow us to intercept new models of life and style”.

SD: “Today the boat plays on several aspects at the same time: large outdoor spaces, greater internal comfort, elegance, flexibility, versatility, design, style, and then, behind the scenes, all the contents related to innovation and technology. Are all of these aspects together necessary to attract the customer?”

GV: “First of all, we must make a very important distinction between all these things: innovation and technology are essential ingredients and they must not be linked with the rest, they stand alone, that is, they are key aspects of the product development area. All other themes, which marketing actions are used to put together like a cocktail, play more on an emotional level on the customer, have less substance, are more part of promotion operations, are useful levers to be able to tell the story of the boat. I think that experimentation must focus on one or part of these aspects; each product will then have its own DNA as distinguishing element, such as Magellano 25 Metri with the interiors by De Cotiis. The right question to ask about this project is ‘Can art come on board and be a tool for enhancing space, without being an end in itself on the one hand and respectful of the object in which it is inserted on the other?’. This is an experience that we have started for some time, already with architect Achille Salvagni: we have created very disruptive lines by breaking the mold of yacht design, and the market has proved us right, it has been a great success. We worked by focusing on one of all aspects, a sinuous design in line with the marine environment. Today Salvagni still collaborates with us on the Flybridge range from 60 feet upwards. Our collaboration has always been a path of ideas shared together, he was chosen at the beginning because we had glimpsed a certain genius in him; even though he came from the residential area, he looked at the boats with respect. His shapes and lines arise from the idea of the fluidity of the object evoking a sense of calm, which is precisely what belongs to nature by definition”.

SD: “Fashion and sometimes also design are used to take their inspirations from the past. In boating this does not happen, what do you think?”

GV: “It’s true, and it is a very interesting aspect. In our sector, there is no such trend. However, if we look at our approach, this theme involves us a lot. Many fashion companies very often open historical archives to celebrate their tradition and their history as evidence of the great contribution they have made to their sector. We are doing this exercise with Benetti”.

“We want to bring to light all our evolution, our archive will be a reference center for documentation on boat styles and concepts that belonged to the past: we believe these are worth finding and revisiting in a modern way in order not to lose them but on the contrary to save them as heritage. We found that even in the customer there is a certain desire to return to the past. B.Yond, Benetti’s new expedition line, is a return to origins. The use of steel is in the DNA of Benetti history. As for Azimut Yachts, the Magellano 25 Metri will already be an example of this exercise we are doing. The boat evokes the retro taste of boating, reinterpreting it in a contemporary key. However, we must also say that this exercise in analyzing the past was also done through the work of architect Stefano Righini, with his study of proportions and volumes. Today designer Alberto Mancini continues this work of analysis of the past for Azimut, focused on harmonic balances. I personally agree, it is essential to look at tradition”.

SD: “With the collaboration with De Cotiis, you introduce, for the first time in the nautical world, the concept of ‘preciousness’, that is environments in which the refined material – marble and brass – is even more exclusive thanks to the contrast with raw materials such the fiberglass used as an element of decoration. Looking at the market, are customers really interested in these style proposals or are they influenced by marketing campaings?”

GV: “De Cotiis is a lover of a principle that in my opinion is extremely nautical, namely the ‘uniqueness of creation’. A value shared by our customers, who interpret uniqueness as one of the ways of understanding luxury. The serial product is not for them. De Cotiis works very well on proposals exclusively designed for the individual client and has a very opulent sense of decoration. He has been able to create a transversal project, I mean, a boat that the customer is not obliged to choose with all the details and decorations proposed by De Cotiis in the first unit, but has the freedom to ask for different elements. The architectural project is valid for this reason, its value lies in the management of the spaces the architect has been able to create and in the interesting architectural vision he has offered”. As a shipyard, we must be very careful that these collaborations do not become sterile style exercises, or collaborations that do not reflect the interest of the market. The Magellano 25 Metri by De Cotiis proved to be the right choice, if we consider that all the units sold so far have his interiors, even if some elements have been changed. But this means that the project works even without all the elements proposed”.

SD: “The boat is an expression of joy, of life, in what form was De Cotiis able to express this emotion?”

GV: “I believe that this explosion of preciousness linked to the contrasts makes the space on board a very fascinating place. De Cotiis has a past experience in retail and this is a very interesting aspect, it allowed him to develop the ability to create unique languages for the wider market. The poetic with which he creates the interiors is a vision of well-being and joy because in this project he tried to bring out the soul from every aspect. We really enjoyed working with him, he is an important signature that we also wanted to involve on a second project, the Azimut Magellano 30 Metri”.

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri Review: Art on Water

azimut yacht magellano 25 metri

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri combines classical good looks, masterfully designed interiors and latest generation technology the likes of which have never been seen on a yacht this size, showcasing exactly what her Italian builder is capable of

When British designer Ken Freivokh designed the first modern navetta in 2009, no one could have imagined how popular this type of vessel, which today can be classified as a ‘ crossover yachts ’ (or marine SUV), would become – and that first navetta was the first yacht from Azimut Magellano series, the 74.

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri

It is not surprising that the Italian builder has invited Freivokh to work with them again, this time to design the model of the Magellano line. As the designer himself said in front of an international audience in Portofino, he managed to create a balanced yacht destined to become a future classic.

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri design

Harmonious proportions, a raised bow and a charming stern give the new Azimut Magellano 25 Metri the feel of a real little explorer, and Freivokh has once again proven himself to be a designer who can do sailboats and motor yachts equally well. This charming hybrid vessel has glossy lacquered wooden elements in outdoor spaces that enhance the exceptional warmth of her exterior. Even if you don’t make it past the stern, you’ll notice the exterior is something else, especially the small salon on the upper deck.

Magellano 25 Metri exterior

On the other hand, Azimut didn’t stop at improving the exterior design alone, so they invited Italian artist Vincenzo De Cotiis, who offered an interpretation of a yacht interior that doesn’t merely read as interior design, but art. Azimut technical team played a key role in selecting among the artist’s ideas those that can be implemented in yachting.

Artistic fibreglass

Interestingly, De Cotiis started using fibreglass as a design element just before he collaborated with Azimut, so for the first time in the history of boat building, there is such a thing as an ‘artistic fibreglass’, a material so finely made it rivals precious jewels.

Layers of fibreglass are mixed in different ratios with copper dust, which gives it a golden hue. The materials were implemented throughout the salon in different forms, most interestingly to create decorative coffee tables with a designer look, but that is just one detail among all the amazing work of the designer throughout the yacht.

azimut yacht magellano 25 metri

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri interior

De Cotiis was guided by the idea of an unobstructed view along the main deck, with plenty of natural light and the use of mirrors to play up the light level in the salon. The result is transparency, both natural and created: wherever you look, you see the surroundings of the yacht.

As we set sail for a sea trial in Viareggio one afternoon, during the golden hour, we witnessed the magic light spectacle imagined by De Cotiis first-hand. On the other hand, the whole design is flowy, floating from the bow to the stern without any sharp edges or any other objects that would bother the view, which complements the light play.

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri salon

The entire main deck of the Azimut Magellano 25 Metri has been converted into an open salon with artistically and skillfully designed sofas – again, with no hard edges on any side – and a long, longitudinally placed dining table. And that’s all there is, literally. The designer’s explanation for such boldness is that yachts aren’t houses, nor should they try and copy them in form and function. They are marine environment dwellers and should be enjoyed as such. Of course, that’s not all there is to it, as the materials used emphasize contact with nature, not only in colour but also in texture.

The dining table was made from a special type of marble, Verde Alpi, very textured and nice to touch, side panels covered in wooden plates with prominent grooves, the floor covered in an artificial material reminiscent of reed. The interior is dominated by light tones, with brassy, glossy touches, pastel and gold. This isn’t the only option as future owners can opt for a more modern look while retaining the bold architecture of the space.

Italian Yacht Interior

The bulkhead opens towards the bow, allowing access to the galley, and with the bulkhead open, you can look all the way from the stern cockpit through the front windows, or in the other direction. There are no support pillars in the salon, which gives the feeling of standing in the middle of a living room of a classy designer penthouse.

Placing the galley in the bow also allowed for placing all the crew spaces in one place, meaning the crew doesn’t have to enter any other part of the yacht, as crew cabins are in the bow and the crew galley has access to the deck. All in all, we have not seen a yacht following this concept yet.

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri layout

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri owner’s suite

Below deck, there are four very comfortable cabins boasting impressive volume, result of Freivokh’s unconventional thinking. Cabins are extremely comfortable and stylish, with numerous details designed exclusively for this model by De Cotiis, like the round mirrors with brass frames, that attract the eye as soon as you step below deck. We also noticed a detail in the wheelhouse (in the raised pilothouse version), accessible by a lovely staircase: a small sliding bed ready to use for naps during night navigation.

Luxury yacht Ferretti Navetta 33 Seventh Sense port side

Seventh Sense

Seventh Sense is a wonderful Ferretti Custom Line Navetta 33. She was delivered in 2008 and fully refitted in 2018.

Exiting the wheelhouse, we found ourselves on the upper deck. Astern, we found the aforementioned cosy salon with views over the stern. The central area with a small bar and a large dining table is covered with a hardtop (with a sliding middle part), and there is another wheelhouse on the bow.

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri range

In navigation, we confirmed everything the skipper – who has spent this last summer cruising on this yacht in Italy – has said: consumption of 550 litres of fuel per hour at maximum speed, 350 litres at cruising speed, and only 100 litres per hour at 12 knots. According to the skipper, this summer the yacht had no issue sailing with wind up to 30 knots. As befits a true explorer, there is an additional lounge outdoor space on the bow, especially attractive at night, when decorative fixtures emit a cosy glow. We can only imagine how lovely this space is in cosy marinas .

The all-new Azimut Magellano 25 Metri was built with abundant use of carbon fibre, it has new batteries that allow spending a whole night at sea without the use of generators, and with special attention paid to comfort. The master cabin was built on rubber bearings that reduce vibration (Azimut call this a floating capsule), while the engine buckle has special rubber bearings that also reduce the transmission of vibrations. The only vibrations you’ll feel after getting to know the new member of the Magellano series are good vibrations.

Azimut Magellano 25 Metri

  • 2017 - 2024
  • 8 Passengers

Description

The presentation of the Azimut Magellano 25 METRI was held at the Boat Show in Dusseldorf in 2017. The ship was designed by the shipyard’s design bureau, together with the design studio De Cotiis Architects and designer Ken Freifohu, who this time created an exterior that was completely non-standard for the shipyard. The yacht received continuous three-row glazing with a mirror coating, large portholes in guest cabins and a dark hull in a strict minimalist style. The model is available in a semi-custom form, with the ability to select interior trim material, rearrange furniture, select a color palette and install additional equipment.

For outdoor recreation, a flybridge, deck chairs in the bow and a shaded terrace, directly from which you can go to the folding transom for swimming, are provided. On the flybridge there is a sofa, a bar, several sunbeds, a waterproof TV and a control post. On the main deck of the Azimut Magellano 25 METRI, there is a sitting area with a large corner sofa and a table, a dining area for 8 people and a kitchen with a stove, fridge, sink and a place to store food supplies. For accommodation, 6 cabins are provided, with a total capacity of 13 people. Also, a configuration with a tender garage in the stern of the vessel is available to the customer.

The yacht has two MAN diesel engines with a total capacity of 2800 hp, and a fuel tank is designed for 8000 liters of fuel. The maximum speed is 25 knots, while cruising is 19 knots. Moving at cruising speed and with a half load, the ship can be overcome up to 400 nautical miles.

The Azimut Magellano 25 METRI has been classified by A.Sea Craft and can be used to access the open ocean.
