Catamaran hulls are not like normal boats but provide increased stability. Let’s take a look at these incredible boats and how their hulls create one of the most versatile watercraft available today.

The Tamil Cholas used catamarans to ferry their troops to invade Malaysia, Indonesia, and Burma. The early paravars or fishing communities in the southern part of Tamil Nadu used two-hulled boats to fish. Polynesian seafarers were also early users of the catamaran, utilizing the watercraft to get to hard-to-reach islands. ( source )

Although the catamaran hull concept is a relatively new introduction to modern boat design , the boat has been in use since the 5th century. It was used for fishing, traveling, and transporting people and supplies. 

Parts Of A Catamaran

Here are the basic parts of the modern sailing catamaran:

  • Hulls are what sets this boat apart from the rest. The catamaran has two hulls, while the monohull, as the name suggests, has only one hull. Most of the advantages of this boat are hinged on these two hulls. 
  • The bridge deck connects the two catamaran hulls. 
  • On top of the catamaran hulls and the bridge deck is the deck . It is where owners attach most of the equipment in a boat. 
  • You can locate the berth, the galley, and other living amenities in the cabin . 
  • The cockpit is where you find the navigation equipment of the boat . It is where you control the catamaran’s rudder, sails, and engine.

The modern catamaran is far more different than its crude ancestor. Instead of tree cutouts, catamarans are now carbon fiber or fiberglass. Here are the different types of catamarans: 

Based On function

Pontoons are usually present on rivers and lakes and sometimes even on oceans, but they only travel near the shore.

In a catamaran pontoon-type boat, the pontoons serve as storage areas, where you will find the onboard motors. They are useful for water leisure activities such as short water trips, tubing, wakeboarding, and water skiing. 

Some pontoons may also serve as houseboats. They provide a broader, more stable platform ideal for a floating house. Plus, the space is bigger, and most of it is above water. It offers a better viewing option than a monohull. ( Source )

Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull is a catamaran-type boat that the United States Navy initially used for military purposes. They provide the water stability that is necessary when transporting heavy military equipment. 

One example of a military SWATH catamaran is the Spearhead class EPF. It is as long as a World War II escort destroyer, yet it is twice as fast at 43 knots. It can reach that speed because of its two separate hulls.

Because of their innate speed, SWATH catamarans can become patrol boats in lakes and rivers. They can easily outrun and outmaneuver standard watercraft.

  • Sailing Catamaran

The smaller sailing catamarans do not have auxiliary engines, so the owner can propel the boat by harnessing the wind using the sails. It’s a popular choice for people with very little or no sailing experience because they are light and easy to use. 

The larger sailing catamarans are for group charters and long-distance cruising. They have become so popular lately that they now outnumber monohulls in tropical locations all over the world. They have a last, a headsail, and a mainsail. And the twin hulls have one engine each. 

  • Power Catamaran

Unlike their sailing cousins, the powered catamarans do not have sails. They have massive engines which provide high speed. Their twin hulls are stronger and can carry and protect the large motors. 

The smaller “powercats” are used mainly for fishing. The bigger ones are rented out for charters and cruises. 

Catamaran Hulls Performance 

Thanks to the catamaran hulls, the boat offers many advantages over other boat types. 

  • Because its dual-hull design provides a broader base, it offers more water stability than monohull boats. It makes the cat (catamaran) a popular choice for fishing expeditions and cruises.
  • Riding a catamaran is ideal for people who feel seasick whenever they ride boats. The twin hulls prevent the boat from moving from side to side. The hulls allow the boat to travel smoothly, even on moderately choppy waters.
  • The catamaran is the best choice when storing provisions and other household items with less heeling and bobbing. 
  • The twin hulls’ stability is ideal for many activities such as cooking and partying. 
  • Cats offer more moving space because of their broader base, thanks to dual hulls.
  • With a catamaran, you have two great options on where to hang out. You can do it on the spacious deck or below the galley. 
  • Compared to a monohull of the same size, the catamaran can accommodate more equipment and people.
  • The living area in a catamaran is above the water line. This feature provides more natural light, a greater view of the outside, and better air circulation. 
  • Since catamarans do not have keels, they can anchor on shallow waters, something that most monohulls will not be able to do. This ability of catamaran boats is impressive, especially if you are going around areas with many reefs and small islands.
  • Catamaran hulls allow the boat to cut through the waves easier and faster. It means they require less engine power than their monohull counterparts.
  • Because it has two engines and two rudders, the catamaran can easily maneuver in very tight spaces. 
  • Because they do not carry heavy keels, catamarans can sail faster than monohulls. 
  • The catamaran’s stability, speed, and weight make it a safer option than the monohull. It can sail in shallow waters, make a 360 degrees maneuver effortlessly, and carry more provisions. 

Disadvantages Of A Catamaran

Like any other boat type, the catamaran also has drawbacks and limitations. Here are some of them:

  • The catamaran hulls prevent the boat from sailing as fast as the monohull upwind. The two hulls cause drag, and this slows the boat considerably. 
  • Because of its bigger size, looking for a docking site can be more difficult and costlier than a monohull. 
  • For hardcore sailing fans, the experience of sailing with a catamaran will never be able to match that of sailing with a monohull. To them, the challenge of true sailing is just not there with a catamaran.

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the Tamil word கட்டுமரம், which is pronounced as kattumaran, is where the word catamaran takes its name. The word means “pieces of logs tied together”. Through the years, the term has evolved into what is now a catamaran in English. 

What Are The Characteristics Of A Catamaran Hull?

Catamarans are increasingly popular for sailing and commercial use, but what sets them apart from monohulls and other multihulls?

A catamaran is a twin-hull boat with two equally-sized hulls placed side by side. They’re powered by engines, sails, or both—and they’re known for efficiency and speed. Catamarans are the most common kind of multihull boat.

In this article, we’ll go over the characteristics of catamarans and how to differentiate them from other types of boats. Additionally, we’ll cover the advantages and disadvantages of catamarans and compare them to trimarans and monohulls. We’ll also go over the most common types of catamarans and their uses.

‍ How to Spot a Catamaran

Spotting a catamaran is easy. Simply look at the hulls and count them. Catamarans have two hulls side by side and a relatively large gap between them where you can see light on the other end. Catamarans are distinct from trimarans, which have an additional hull between the two outer hulls.

How do Catamarans Work?

The principle behind the catamaran is simple. You can think of catamarans like cars and monohulls like motorcycles. Catamarans distribute their weight between hulls on either side, whereas monohulls utilize only one hull.

Evidently, cars are much more difficult to tip over and can hold much more weight. Additionally, cars are wider, as they have much more contact with the road. Catamarans work in a similar way, as they have a wide stance and contact with the surface on both sides.

Obviously, that isn’t the most precise comparison. But the basic principle is the same, and catamarans have a few notable benefits over monohulls.

Catamaran Vs Monohull

Catamarans are easy to distinguish from monohulls. A monohull is just a regular old boat with a single hull. The vast majority of boats and ships are monohulls. Catamarans have two hulls, which are usually sleek and narrow.

Here are some comparisons of catamarans and monohulls, along with the advantages twin-hull designs have over most single hull types.

Benefits of Catamarans

Catamarans have numerous benefits. The first is speed. Catamarans produce less drag than monohulls and thus can achieve excessive speeds both under sail and power. They don’t need to plane like monohulls to achieve these high speeds, and they use less fuel.

Catamarans are also much more stable than monohulls. They have a wide stance and shallow draft, and many waves and swells can travel between the hulls instead of below them. This effectively reduces an entire axis of movement and prevents catamarans from rolling excessively.

Drawbacks of Catamarans

Catamarans aren’t advantageous in every way, or else we wouldn’t bother building monohulls. The disadvantages of catamarans limit their use to niche commercial applications and high-end yachts. But what are the drawbacks of a twin-hull design?

Sailing catamarans don’t follow many of the traditional boat handling rules and characteristics that sailors pass down for generations. Some, such as hull speed limitations, are good to do away with—while others, such as responsiveness, are not.

Catamarans aren’t as quick to the helm or responsive as monohulls. There are some exceptions to this rule, but for the most part, you’ll get a lot more feedback from a single-hull vessel. Additionally, the large section of deck between the hulls of a catamaran is prone to pounding in rough seas, which is loud and uncomfortable.

Catamarans can sometimes be twice the width of an equivalent monohull sailboat, which can increase mooring fees and limit docking options.

The final major drawback of catamarans is a consequence of their stability. Traditional full-keel monohull sailboats have a very low center of gravity, which makes them roll in heavy seas but ensures a recovery.

Catamarans have a higher center of gravity, and they can’t right themselves after a knockdown. And though catamarans are less likely to roll, a severe list on a multihull is a much more serious concern than on a ballasted monohull.

Catamaran Vs Trimaran

Catamarans and trimarans are often lumped together, but they have very different design and performance specifications. Trimarans have three hulls, whereas catamarans have two.

Trimarans look a lot like catamarans from the side, but a quick glance at the bow or stern can set them apart. Trimarans are faster than catamarans, as they distribute their weight across three hulls instead of two. This helps them stay centered and reduces interference from pitching and rolling.

Catamarans are fast, but they lose out to trimarans when going head to head. However, catamarans are much less expensive to build and maintain and often have roomier cabins due to their larger hulls.

Types of Catamarans

There are numerous types of catamarans, and their uses vary widely. The catamaran is one of the oldest and most useful hull types, and some variants have been used for thousands of years. Here are the most common kinds of catamaran boats and their uses.

Sailing Catamaran

Sailing catamarans are probably what you think of when you hear the name. Sailing catamarans are sailboats with two identical hulls connected by a center deck. The largest sailing catamarans are spacious and stable vessels that are capable of serious offshore sailing.

Sailing catamarans have a number of notable advantages over monohulls. Monohulls, which are traditional sailboats with a single hull, are limited by a simple concept called hull speed. As the bow and stern wave of a monohull intersect, they cause drag which limits the top speed of the boat.

Catamarans are not bound by hull speed limitations, as they have two hulls. Catamarans can go twice or even three times as fast as similar monohulls and achieve excellent travel times.

Catamarans are also more stable than monohulls, as their wide stance and shallow draft reduce the effect of rough water. They don’t heel, as the force of the wind is counteracted by the double hulls. Additionally, modern sailing catamarans can ‘wave pierce’ by cutting through swells instead of riding over them.

Sailing catamarans come in many shapes and sizes. Small sailing catamarans, such as those used in races and regattas, are known for their speed and relative stability compared to light racing monohulls. Sometimes, they feature a smaller second hull for stability—these are called outriggers.

Sailing catamarans have spacious interiors thanks to the large cockpit between the hulls. This cockpit usually contains cooking and eating spaces, a place to sit, and a hallway between the hulls. The hulls usually contain living quarters and often mirror each other.

Power Catamarans

Power catamarans have an even greater variety than sailing catamarans. These vessels are used for everything from party platforms to ferries and patrol boats.

Power catamarans are a recent development, as engineers and marine architects now realize they have numerous hydrodynamic advantages over other hull types.

Catamarans are much more efficient than other hull types, as they have less drag relative to their size. Additionally, you can build a much larger catamaran with less material. This makes them popular for car and rail ferries, as builders can construct a very wide vessel with two small hulls rather than a narrower vessel with a large single hull.

Military and Commercial Catamarans

Even the military has found a use for the catamaran hull shape. The Spearhead class EPF is an expeditionary fast transport vessel designed for carrying capacity and speed. It has two sharp hulls and a huge cargo capacity.

The Spearhead class EPF is 337 feet long, which is about the same length as a WW2 escort destroyer. Yet despite having a similar length and displacement, these catamarans can travel more than twice as fast—43 knots, or nearly 50 miles per hour. Their great speed is a direct consequence of their catamaran hull type.

Power catamarans are also used as patrol and utility boats on a much smaller scale, with either outboard or inboard motors. The State of Texas uses catamarans to patrol shallow rivers and lakes. Texas Game Wardens utilize state-of-the-art aluminum catamaran patrol boats, which are fast enough to outrun most fishing boats.

There’s another form of power catamaran that you may not have considered. Pontoon boats are technically catamarans, and they’re enormously popular on lakes and rivers throughout the country. Pontoon boats aren’t known for speed, but they’re a great platform for a fun and comfortable outing.

Catamaran Houseboats

The final common type of power catamaran is the two-hulled houseboat. Houseboats don’t always use the catamaran hull type, but it’s common enough that most major manufacturers offer it as an option.

Catamaran houseboats have a few notable advantages over monohull designs. For one, they’re easier to build—especially when pontoons are chosen. Additionally, they’re better suited for navigating shallow water. These vessels can support more weight across their two hulls, offer increased stability, and they’re also efficient.

Why Aren’t Catamarans More Common?

With all the advantages listed in this article to consider, it may seem strange that the use of catamarans is still somewhat limited. At the end of the day, it comes down to economics—as monohull boats and ships are simply cheaper to build.

Additionally, catamarans have some distinct limitations. Monohulls have lots of storage space in their hulls and can carry thousands of tons of cargo safely in all weather conditions. Catamarans lack this space and low center of gravity, so they’re not ideal for transporting cargo past a certain point.

Additionally, monohulls work, and many people are reluctant to experiment with new designs when old designs work just fine. This rule applies to both large and small boats.

A large monohull sailboat can be constructed at low cost from stock plans and reliably sail almost anywhere. Very little complex structural engineering is involved, and looser tolerances reduce cost and maintenance requirements.

Catamarans - high speed and lots of comfort

A catamaran is a boat with two hulls that are parallel to each other and connected in different ways. The name comes from the Tamil language and means "bundle of logs". This design offers high stability on the water and often enables higher speeds than conventional monohull boats. Catamarans are built in different sizes and for different purposes, for example as small beach catamarans, large and comfortable cruising catamarans or fast sports catamarans. They are particularly popular because of their speed and stability, but also their comfort.

Catamarans - more than just two hulls

A catamaran is a special type of boat characterised by two hulls arranged parallel to each other. This distinctive feature gives the catamaran a number of advantages over conventional monohull boats. Firstly, the twin-hull construction offers increased stability. When sailing, catamarans have significantly less lean (heel) than monohull yachts and are also less prone to rolling in waves. Because of these significantly smoother sailing characteristics, the risk of becoming seasick is usually lower on catamarans than on monohulls.

Catamarans are often more efficient than conventional boats. Due to their lower water resistance, they require less energy to move through the water. For motorised catamarans, this can lead to lower fuel costs.

Different types of catamarans

Catamarans differ in size and intended use. A distinction is made between, among others

  • Cruising catamarans
  • Regatta catamarans

The cruising catamaran - when the centre of life is on the water

Both cruising sailing catamarans and motorised catamarans are designed so that the crew can live on them. They usually have the berths and wet cells for the crew in the hulls. Depending on the size and type of boat, the cabins are very spacious. In many cases, they are larger and more comfortable than on the classic sailing boat . The wider platform connecting the two hulls provides more space for passengers or equipment.

The superstructure between the two hulls usually accommodates the steering position and the Navigation corner . There is also a light-flooded saloon and a galley, the pantry.

Another advantage of cruising catamarans is their shallower draught compared to monohulls. They have no centreboards or keels, if they have flat stub keels at all. They can therefore also sail in shallower water or enter shallow bays.

Regatta catamarans - sailing in a different way

Regatta catamarans are characterised above all by their high speeds. However, a distinction must be made between small beach catamarans or sports catamarans for sheltered waters and ocean-going catamarans.

Beach and sports catamarans

The former are also known as beach cats and are specially designed for use near the coast and on shallow water. They are characterised by their lightness, which makes them easy to transport and allows them to be launched and landed directly from the beach. Their construction is generally simple, without cabins or other heavy equipment, which also contributes to their low weight.

Because of their lightness, beach catamarans can reach very high speeds. They are often equipped with centreboards to prevent drifting, one in each hull. These can be raised. The rudder blades can also usually be folded up, allowing these catamarans to be sailed directly onto the beach.

Despite their lightness and speed, beach catamarans offer good stability and are less prone to tipping than small dinghies, for example. This is why some people find it easier to learn to sail on a catamaran than on a monohull. However, the important feeling for tilting a boat is less strongly conveyed on a catamaran than on a dinghy.

Some well-known models of beach catamarans are the Hobie Cat 16 and the Nacra 17. These boats are popular for recreational sailing and racing.

Ocean-going catamarans

They are characterised above all by their high speeds. They are almost completely devoid of comfort, which makes them extremely lightweight. These catamarans also have no keel, which makes them even lighter than monohulls. However, like all catamarans, they can also capsize. If this happens, ocean-going catamarans, unlike beach catamarans, cannot be righted again without outside help.

Trimarans - one more hull for more speed

Like the catamaran, the trimaran is a multihull. High speeds are its trademark. In contrast to the catamaran, the trimaran has three hulls. The three hulls are arranged parallel to each other. The centre hull is almost always larger and wider than the two outer hulls, also known as floats. In principle, a trimaran is something like a very narrow yacht that rests on the floats to prevent it from tipping over.

A distinction must also be made between cruising trimarans and high-performance trimarans. In cruising trimarans, the hull is extended and accommodates cabins and the cockpit. Overall, however, this centre hull offers significantly less comfort than a comparably sized monohull yacht due to its narrow width.

High-performance trimarans, on the other hand, dispense with comfort altogether. They achieve their high speeds thanks to the favourable ratio of sail area to hull resistance.

Catamaran details

Most catamarans are equipped with sails that are also common on monohulls, Mainsail and genoa. The mainsail is often fully battened and has a very large sail area.

Catamarans have a double rudder, i.e. one rudder at the stern of each hull. On beach catamarans, the two tiller rudders on the rudder heads are connected to each other via a tie rod. The long tiller boom is then attached to the centre of the track rod. On larger cruising catamarans, the rudders are connected to each other via cables that are led to the steering wheel. This allows both rudders to be operated simultaneously.

Beach catamarans are often equipped with a trapeze or even two trapezes. The trapeze is a wire on each side that is attached to the top of the mast. A crew member can then use a harness with a hook to attach themselves to the wire and stand with their feet on the outside of the hull. This brings the crew's weight further outwards and counteracts heeling.

Catamarans - stability is important

The stability of a catamaran is based on its width. Unlike monohulls, where the heeling force from the sails is countered by a keel as a counterweight, catamarans use a different principle.

Due to the large transverse distance between the respective empty hull and the sails, the empty hull generates a high righting moment with a very effective lever. In addition, the windward hull acts as a kind of counterweight. Put simply, the buoyancy of the empty hull acts upwards and the weight of the windward hull downwards. Both forces provide the necessary counter-pressure to the pressure from the sails.

The greater the distance between the two hulls, the more effectively the principle works. Modern racing catamarans are therefore almost as wide as they are long. For cruising catamarans, however, space in the harbour and the design are limiting factors.

This is another reason why cruising catamarans like to anchor in bays.

Modern materials for modern boats

Different materials are used in the construction of catamarans depending on their intended use. Cruising catamarans from large-scale production are made from GRP, as are monohull yachts. There are cost reasons for this. GRP is the most favourable material for the desired properties.

The sportier the concept becomes, whether for a beach cat or a large sports catamaran, the higher the quality of the materials used, such as carbon fibre or aramid. The aim is to keep the weight as low as possible, as these catamarans focus on sailing performance, whereas cruising catamarans are more concerned with space and comfort.

The equipment of cruising catamarans

There are clear differences in the equipment of cruising catamarans compared to conventional ones Yachts . Due to the large amount of space available, there is more room for installations than on a monohull. For example, the tanks for fresh water and fuel are usually significantly larger than on comparable monohulls. With several hundred litres of fresh water, the crew can remain self-sufficient for longer, while the large fuel reserves allow a large radius of action under engine.

The interiors of cruising catamarans also differ from those of modern yachts. The cabins are located in the respective hulls and are therefore far apart from each other, allowing for greater privacy than on a monohull. The berths are located in the cabins. In addition, each cabin often has its own bathroom with toilet and shower. This turns each cabin into its own little flat.

The saloon and galley, usually located on the platform between the hulls, are more spacious than on monohulls. Depending on the size and price, the other Equipment options . Even air conditioning and heating systems are standard on cruising catamarans in many places.

The best sailing area for the catamaran

Cruising catamarans are mainly used in the Mediterranean and in tropical waters. There, they are characterised by their great self-sufficiency. Cruising catamarans are less suitable for the North Sea or Baltic Sea. However, this has nothing to do with their sailing characteristics, but with the conditions on land. There is usually a lack of suitable berths in the harbours.

The costs are higher than for a monohull

Two hulls, a special superstructure and the fact that catamarans offer more space mean that these special ships have higher acquisition costs, but also higher maintenance costs than a classic sailing yacht. The main factor in the purchase costs is that more material is used due to the larger enclosed space. In addition, more labour hours are required and the equipment is usually more expensive than on a monohull yacht.

Mooring costs are usually higher for a catamaran than for a monohull yacht, as it requires more space in the marina due to its large beam. However, the greater comfort and longer self-sufficiency of a catamaran also means that more time can be spent at anchor. In addition to the shallow draught, which opens up more anchoring options, mooring fees can also be moderate if marinas are frequently avoided.

The larger a catamaran is, the more varied the equipment options become. The price ranges therefore increase with increasing size.

There are many renowned shipyards that specialise in building catamarans. Here are five of the leading manufacturers:

Buying a new or used catamaran?

Part 1: Notes from Richard Woods

Since the America’s Cup experimented with going multihull, there’s been a lot of interest in catamaran performance and the catamaran hull designs that define performance. Many guys are investigating whether to buy a catamaran or design and build their dream boat. Let it be said here that building a large catamaran is not for the faint of heart. People begin building 100s of boats a year, yet few are ever completed, as life always seems to have a way of interfering with a good boat build. 

Never the less, since the rest of this website is about selecting and buying a boat , it only seems fair to have at least one webpage that covers catamaran design. This page contains notes on boat hull design goals and an accompanying page from Terho Halme has mathematical formulas used in actual catamaran hull design. It has become a popular research stop and an important reference to the catamaran design community.

The content of this page was reproduced from the maestro of Catamaran designs, renown British naval architect, Richard Woods, who not only designs catamarans, he sails them across oceans…. repeatedly. He has a lot to say on the subject of catamaran hull design.

“…When it’ all said and done, the performance of a sailing catamaran is dependent on three primary specs: length, sail area and weight. If the boat is longer it generally means it’ a faster boat. If she has more sail area, it means she’ a faster boat and if she’ light it means she’ a faster boat.  Of course, there are limits: Too much sail area capsizes the boat in brisk winds. If the boat is designed too light, she will not take any kind of punishment. Too slim a hull design and the boat becomes a large Hobie Cat capable of only carrying your lunch. Of course, too long and large and you’d have to be Bill Gates to afford one. Then there are lot of additional and very important factors like underwater hull shape, aspect ratios of boards and sails, wet deck clearance, rotating or fixed rigging and so on….” Richard Woods

All Catamarans are not equal, but all sailboats have two things in common: They travel on water and they’re wind powered, so the Catamaran design equations in the 2nd part should apply to every catamaran from a heavy cruising Cat to a true ocean racer.

Richard Wood’s comments on catamaran design:

We all know that multihulls can be made faster by making them longer or lighter or by adding more sail. Those factors are the most important and why they are used as the basis of most rating rules. However using just those figures is a bit like determining a cars performance just by its hp and curbside weight. It would also imply that a Tornado would sail as fast forwards as backwards (OK, I know I just wrote that a Catalac went faster backwards than forwards)

So what next?? Weight and length can be combined into the Slenderness Ratio (SLR). But since most multihulls have similar Depth/WL beam ratios you can pretty much say the SLR equates to the LWL/BWL ratio. Typically this will be 8-10:1 for a slow cruising catamaran (or the main hull of most trimarans), 12-14:1 for a performance cruiser and 20:1 for an extreme racer.

So by and large faster boats have finer hulls. But the wetted surface area (WSA) increases proportionately as fineness increases (for a given displacement the half orange shape gives the least WSA) so fine hulls tend to be slower in low wind speeds.

The most important catamaran design hull shape factor, is the Prismatic Coefficient (Cp). This is a measure of the fullness of the ends of the hull. Instinctively you might think that fine ends would be faster as they would “cut through the water better”. But in fact you want a high Cp for high speeds. However everything is interrelated. If you have fine hulls you can use a lower Cp. Most monohulls have a Cp of 0.55- 0.57. And that is about right for displacement speeds.

However the key to Catamaran design is you need a higher Cp if you want to sail fast. So a multihull should be at least 0.61 and a heavy displacement multihull a bit higher still. It is difficult to get much over 0.67 without a very distorted hull shape or one with excessive WSA. So all multihulls should have a Cp between 0.61 and 0.65. None of this is very special or new. It has been well known by naval architects for at least 50 years.

There are various ways of achieving a high Cp. You could fit bulb bows (as Lock Crowther did). Note this bow is a bit different from those seen on ships (which work at very specific hull speeds – which are very low for their LOA). But one problem with them is that these tend to slam in a seaway. 

Another way is to have a very wide planing aft section. But that can increase WSA and leads to other problems I’ll mention in a minute. Finally you can flatten out the hull rocker (the keel shape seen from the side) and add a bustle aft. That is the approach I use, in part because that adds displacement aft, just where it is most needed.

I agree that a high Cp increases drag at low speeds. But at speeds over hull speed drag decreases dramatically on a high Cp boat relative to one with a low Cp. With the correct Cp drag can be reduced by over 10%. In other words you will go 10% faster (and that is a lot!) in the same wind and with the same sails as a boat with a unfavorable Cp. In light winds it is easy to overcome the extra drag because you have lots of stability and so can fly extra light weather sails.

The time you really need a high Cp boat is when beating to windward in a big sea. Then you don’t have the stability and really want to get to your destination fast. At least I do, I don’t mind slowly drifting along in a calm. But I hate “windward bashing”

But when you sail to windward the boat pitches. The sea isn’t like a test tank or a computer program. And here I agree with Evan. Immersed transoms will slow you down (that is why I use a narrower transom than most designers).

I also agree with Evan (and why not, he knows more about Volvo 60 design than nearly anyone else on the planet) in that I don’t think you should compare a catamaran hull to a monohull, even a racing one. Why chose a Volvo 60/Vendee boat with an immersed transom? Why not chose a 60ft Americas Cup boat with a narrow out of the water transom?? 

To be honest I haven’t use Michelet so cannot really comment. But I have tested model catamarans in a big test tank and I know how inaccurate tank test results can be. I cannot believe that a computer program will be better.

It would be easy to prove one way or the other though. A catamaran hull is much like a frigate hull (similar SLR, L/B ratios and Froude numbers) and there is plenty of data available for those. There is also a lot of data for the round bilge narrow non planing motorboats popular in the 1930’-50’s which again are similar to a single multihull hull.

One of the key findings I discovered with my tank test work was just how great the drag was due to wave interference between the hulls. Even a catamaran with a modern wide hull spacing had a drag increase of up to 20 % when compared to hulls at infinite spacing. One reason why just flying a hull is fast (the Cp increases when you do as well, which also helps). So you cannot just double the drag of a single hull and expect to get accurate results. And any speed prediction formula must include a windage factor if it is to give meaningful results.About 25 years ago we sailed two identical 24ft Striders next to each other. They were the same speed. Then we moved the crew of one boat to the bow. That boat IMMEDIATELY went ½ knot faster. That is why I now arrange the deck layout of my racing boats so that the crew can stay in front of the mast at all times, even when tacking or using the spinnaker.

I once raced against a bridge deck cabin catamaran whose skipper kept the 5 crew on the forward netting beam the whole race. He won.

The closer to 1-20 the better.

Closing the hulls to fit in cheaper marina berth. ?

You say not too close. But is that for sailing only.

Catamaran vs Trimaran: Choosing the Perfect Multihull Vessel

The debate over whether catamarans or trimarans are better boats has been going on for a long time without resolution, but the reason is understandable. The truth is that despite their many similarities, catamarans and trimarans have distinct characteristics that set them apart from each other, so each type of vessel offers a distinct boating experience. The catamaran vs. trimaran debate largely boils down to personal preference and how you intend to use the boat. Here are some of the things you need to consider when choosing between a catamaran and a trimaran. 

What Is a Catamaran?

A catamaran is a multi-hulled boat that has two twin hulls connected by a structure supported by a wide beam. Catamarans come in a wide variety of sizes, ranging from small rowing boats to large boats that are big enough to be used as car ferries. The structure connecting the two hulls can be anything from a simple frame with webbing to a superstructure that includes cabin and/or cargo space. Most of the recreational catamarans for sale are designed to hold two to 20 passengers.

What Is a Trimaran?

A trimaran is also a multi-hulled boat, but it has three hulls instead of two like the catamaran. The middle (main) hull is larger than the two small outer hulls attached to it. These hulls are connected by a lateral beam, wing, or some other form of superstructure, depending on the model. These types of boats also come in a wide variety of sizes, ranging from recreational yachts to ferries.

The advantages of catamarans vs. trimarans are mainly based on comfort. Catamarans are spacious boats, known for their large living quarters with plenty of room on board for hosting gatherings and parties. Their popularity has enticed many boat builders to create increasingly luxurious designs on larger and larger boats. The catamaran also has a more classic style that appeals to those who want a boat with a simple, sleek shape. Catamarans are best suited for boating in calm seas, lagoons, and shallow waters.

Advantages of Trimaran vs. Catamaran

The advantages of trimarans vs. catamarans mainly come down to speed. Trimarans are among the speediest boats available, offering lightning-fast speeds on open waters. Many recent winners of notable boating competitions have been won by boaters piloting trimarans. These boats also perform well when heading upwind and are remarkably stable with their three-hulled design. The anchoring gear is installed on the main hull and is easy to deploy.

In the trimaran vs. catamaran speed debate, the trimaran is the clear winner. For long offshore races, trimarans have become the preferred vessels, and boaters piloting trimarans have won the Jules Verne Trophy in every race held since 2010. This is because of their unique design, which has speed and safety qualities that provide significant benefits for boaters. 

The trimaran's third hull makes the boat considerably faster than any other hull form due to the correlation between the boat’s waterline length and its speed. Having more hull distance in the water lets the boat reach higher speeds. Trimarans can also be pushed harder and are more forgiving than other boat styles in racing environments.

That doesn't mean that catamarans are slow. Some styles of catamarans are capable of breaking world records when the boating conditions are right. On downwind runs, a racing catamaran may be quicker than a trimaran, but for overall speed in various conditions, the trimaran comes out on top. 

Catamaran vs. Trimaran Performance

In the catamaran vs. trimaran performance debate, both sides have their advantages. A catamaran is easier to handle and maneuver with the boater having to handle the lines and halyards less often. However, this ease comes at the expense of speed, with cruising catamarans generally traveling slower than comparable trimarans. 

Trimarans are more versatile in their performance, and they perform better than a catamaran when traveling against the current or the wind. Trimarans can be used in nearly all weather conditions, are less vulnerable to drifting, and have less roll motion than a catamaran. However, handling a trimaran requires more work than handling a catamaran, which can be exhausting over long periods of sailing. 

Trimaran vs. Catamaran Efficiency

When comparing trimaran vs. catamaran efficiency, the differences are minimal. Multi-hulled boats are more fuel-efficient than comparable mono-hulled boats due to their hull forms and their lighter weights. Multi-hulled boats also tend to have smaller displacement and shallower drafts than other boat styles. 

The biggest difference in trimaran vs. catamaran efficiency is that catamarans nearly always have twin engines while trimarans generally run with one engine. A trimaran also has less hydrodynamic resistance than a catamaran because it spreads out the displacement across three hulls instead of two. This allows each hull to be narrower and more streamlined.

Catamaran vs. Trimaran Stability

The stability of multi-hulled boats is one of their biggest advantages over mono-hulled vessels. Multi-hulled boats benefit greatly from their wider stance on the water, and their wide beams and floats offer higher stability than a ballasted keel. Multi-hulled boats are also more buoyant because their floats help prevent immersion. When comparing catamaran vs. trimaran stability, the better boat will depend on the conditions on the water.

A catamaran's geometrically stabilized design reduces both heeling and wave-induced motion, providing a stable platform underway and at anchor. However, the catamaran's design is not as suitable for navigating heavy seas as the trimaran's build. The trimaran's three hulls provide excellent stability even in rough waves, but this can also make a trimaran less comfortable than a catamaran when the water is calm.

Both catamarans and trimarans are considered to be safer on the water than mono-hulled boats. A catamaran has superior resilience and roll inertia that makes capsizing extremely unlikely. Its speed, steadiness, and ease of motion due to a lack of ballast also contribute to increased safety.

Trimarans are considered the safest multi-hulled boats because their three-hulled design makes them almost unsinkable. Many also have a core made of high buoyancy foam, helping them stay afloat even in the most brutal storms. Weight centering and a complete anti-drift scheme also make the boat safer for everyone aboard.

Trimaran vs. Catamaran Maintenance

Comparing trimaran vs. catamaran maintenance costs shows that many of the costs will be very similar for both types of boats. These costs include yearly boat service and repairs, annual haul-outs, and insurance coverage but exclude major upgrades. You will also have to budget for dockage, winterization, and storage for each year if you don't intend to use the boat year-round. 

Boaters are advised to budget between 5% and 10% of the boat's value for annual maintenance costs if their boat is less than five years old and a little more if the boat is older than that. Different maintenance jobs can be charged in different ways. Sometimes, the charges are based on the length of the boat while other charges are based on the number of hours worked.

If you are looking for an affordable seafaring vessel, catamarans and trimaran are both good choices. There are many reasonably priced catamarans and trimarans suited for families as well as other models that provide more luxury for an additional cost. The materials that the manufacturer used to build the boat and the electronics included will also impact the price of the boat.

With so many different factors impacting the cost of different boats, you should choose the best vessel for you based on the features you want as well as your budget. Importantly, with 40 square feet of open cockpit area, the self-bailing, non-skid aft cockpit is a fisherman’s dream, with bolsters and rod holders and a 40 gallon raw water livewell in the aft port corner. The market for multi-hull superyachts has skyrocketed in recent years as owners begin to favour the high volumes and superlative stability on offer. Once the novelty of a small group of owners, a recent slew of multi-hull concepts and the success of shipyards such as Sunreef has confirmed that two and three-hulled superyachts are well and truly on the up. We remember some of the most ground-breaking multi-hull launches...

White Rabbit

One of the coolest launches of 2018, the 84 metre White Rabbit is the largest trimaran in the world. She was built in fibreglass by Australian Yard Echo Yachts with exterior design by Sam Sorgiovanni and naval architecture by One2Three. White Rabbit was delivered to an experienced owner who owns a number of other multihull superyachts, including a 51 metre shadow catamaran, also built by Echo Yachts, which will be used as a support vessel; for the 84 metre trimaran.

Inspired by Game of Thrones, the 66 metre shadow catamaran Hodor is a support vessel used to carry all the toys and tenders for her mothership. The vessel is fully custom and was designed by Incat Crowther. Hodor boasts five tenders, including a 17 metre chase boat and a 388 Skater powerboat with a top speed of 165 knots. Other toys include nine Jet Skis, two Yamaha ATCs, four Yamaha TW200 trail motorcycles and a three-person submarine.

A true icon,  Adastra was launched in 2012 by Australian yard McConaghy Yachts . With a length of 42.5 metres and a sleek Kevlar and GRP exterior, this space-age design is every bit as out-of-this-world as its name suggests. Made for exploring, an impressive 10,000 nautical mile range means she can cross the Atlantic twice before needing to refuel. A shallow draft of 1.2 metres allows her to access hard to reach anchorages and shallow bays too.

In 2011,  Hemisphere was launched as world’s largest sailing catamaran with an LOA of 44.2 metres - and she remains so to this day. Built for American owners who had previously chartered a catamaran in the Caribbean, this British yacht was a bespoke project by Pendennis . Fully kitted out for diving, Hemisphere ’s port hull contains a dive centre capable of refilling both air and Nitrox tanks.

Yachts for charter

Royal falcon one.

The 41.4 metre Royal Falcon One is a quirky catamaran launched in 2019. She was designed by Singapore-based Royal Falcon Fleet in collaboration with F.A Porsche Design Studio and built in Sweden by Kockums. Accommodation is for up to 10 guests in five spacious cabins, including a full beam master suite with its own private deck space. Crew are housed in the two hulls.

Launched in 2015,  Spirit is a 35 metre New Zealand Yachts powercat featuring  Ken Freivokh interiors and naval architecture by Bakewell-White Design . A perfect example of how catamarans can help to maximise the living space available, Spirit has the interior volume you might expect from a 45 metre monohull. Her unconventional looks will make her stand out from the crowd in her new home of Australia, but Spirit is just one of many striking multihull superyachts to have hit the water in recent years.

Pilar Rossi

Formula One racing legend Nelson Piquet’s yacht Pilar Rossi was built in Turkey as a modest 33 metre Alucraft motor yacht. But his uncle, a Brazilian naval architect, helped Piquet convert her into a 64 metre sailing trimaran by adding outriggers and two masts. The reborn trimaran can accommodate up to 18 guests.

Galaxy of Happiness

Unveiled to the world in May 2016, Galaxy of Happiness  is one of two 53 metre trimarans to be launched by Latvian yard Latitude Yachts . This multihull superyacht is built from a GRP and carbon fibre composite and is capable of a top speed of 30 knots. The interior, designed by Latitude Yachts and Jean-Jacques Coste , features an owner’s cabin and two guest cabins.

Launched in 2004, this Chinese catamaran from Pride Mega Yachts may look like a vision of the future, but the inspiration for Asean Lady is actually ancient. The twin hulled 88.15 metre yacht is based on the proa design that has been used for more than 2,000 years to build fishing boats in the Pacific region. Her stability was put to the test in December 2004 when she survived the Indian Ocean tsunami while moored off Phuket.

Flexibility is the key word that informed the design of the 33.7 metre  Quaranta . Launched at Turkish yard Logos Marine in 2013, this catamaran superyacht features the kind of interior volume more commonly associated with a 40 metre yacht. All six guest suites are located on the main deck and the absence of structural bulkheads means that they can easily be reconfigured. This innovative system helped Quaranta to win the catamaran award at the 2014 World Superyacht Awards .

As a Twin Vee moves through the water, the boat hull has lifting strakes on each hull’s sides. Catamaran Versus V-Hull: Which Rides Better?

Catamaran Versus V-Hull: Which Rides Better?

The controversy rages in dockside watering holes, tackle shops, and Internet chat rooms: Which rides better-a catamaran or a V-hull? So far, all the talk has been purely subjective: A cat feels like this, a V-hull feels like that. To us, that’s useless. At Boating Magazine, we need hard numbers, things that we can quantify, then we’ll decide. So we took a Regulator 26, which just might be the best-riding V-hull for its size, and a Glacier Bay 260 Canyon Runner, one of the best-riding cats, and wired them with expensive sensing gear. Rather than a match between two specific boats, it would be a comparison of the finest qualities of each type. We expected the cat to be smoother when the going got rough, but what about the other times? Is it the most comfortable all-around boat? It took us a year-that’s right, one full year-to compile and understand the data, but here, finally, is the answer.

Measured Madness Our first problem was how to quantify a boat’s motion underway. The best tool we came up with is an accelerometer, which records changes and degrees of motion. We also had electronic gear to measure the boats’ angles, WAAS-enabled GPS units, rangefinders to measure distances, four laptops, stopwatches, plumb bobs, measuring tapes, and eventually, a collection of soggy notebooks.

To help us make sense of what we compiled, and back up our conclusions, we enlisted two top naval architects. So we’d like to thank Rick Strand, president of Strand Technologies, a consultant to companies such as Tillotson-Pearson, Boston Whaler, and Brunswick; and John H. Deknatel, president of the legendary design firm C. Raymond Hunt Associates.

With their help, the evidence became clear. What we discovered should silence the know-it-alls and may surprise the enlightened. Without question, we’ve killed the controversy. The boat type with the most comfortable ride is…

Not so fast-to understand our answer, you need to know how we approached the question.

Three Easy Pieces First, we wanted to measure how differently cats and V-hulls turn. To do this, we set up a buoy and had each boat make the tightest 180-degree turn it could at 30 mph. The diameter of each boat’s turn was about the same, although the V-hull averaged 8.4 seconds compared to the cat’s 8.9 seconds. The important difference, however, was how each banked in the turn.

Our electronic angle indicator showed the cat leaning outward by 26 degrees. The unit may have been over-reading due to outward force, but none of the techies from the indicator’s company could confirm this and they therefore stand by its number. By any measure, the cat did lean outward at a steep angle, which can be disconcerting to say the least. Loose gear slides more when a boat leans opposite the turn, and the push that occurs at the apex can make you feel as if you’re going to be thrown out. Of course, with time, you can get used to this. Furthermore, the lean can be minimized by trimming up the outboard engine and trimming down the inboard.

In contrast, the V-hull banked inward by 10 degrees. This not only feels natural, it also has a practical advantage. Centrifugal force pins you and your deck gear into the boat, and you need no special trimming techniques-just turn the wheel.

Both boats are designed for fishing, so our second test was to see how each fared while drifting.

To start, we measured each boat’s roll period-how long it takes to roll all the way to one side and back again. Too short a roll period foretells a jerky motion at sea, too long may mean there’s not enough initial stability. The cat’s period was 2.2 seconds. The V-hull’s was 2.4 seconds, almost 10 percent slower-which in this case is good.

Given our experience with a cat’s less-than-gentle motion at drift, we expected its period to be a lot shorter than the V-hull’s. In hopes of explaining this, we headed out into the ocean.

After the two boats took their natural drift angle in four-foot waves, we looked at the mean G forces each experienced. The cat showed 0.92 Gs, and the V-hull showed 1.18 Gs. So the cat is more comfortable, right?

Not quite. On average, it took the cat 1.15 seconds to reach those Gs, whereas it took the V-hull a little longer at 1.17 seconds. That is, the V-hull accelerated 2 percent slower than the cat. And, as we’ll get into later, slower accelerations equal more comfort.

The results from the accelerometer confirm our roll period tests. The cat, with its greater initial stability, resists rolling. When you stand on its rail at the dock, you notice it hardly leans at all. Most folks think this stability makes for a better boat offshore. But that same resistance to listing at the dock causes a cat to follow the contour of the waves while drifting. The steeper the wave face, the more the cat leans over.

The V-hull has less initial stability, so it gives a bit to your weight at the dock-and to oncoming waves. Its ability to roll easier means it’s not forced to follow the contour of the wave. Instead, as a wave approaches, the boat leans toward it, levels out at the crest, and then leans back into the retreating wave on the way down. In this way, it’s trying to remain level, rather than trying to conform to the angle of the water it’s floating in.

Our third test was to see how smooth each boat ran on a “perfect” boating day, one with a small one-to-two-foot chop on an open bay and a 10-mph breeze. We ran the boats side by side, and the differences shown on the accelerometer were negligible.

So far, after three tests, the V-hull had come out on top in two, and both boats were about equal in one.

We Take It Outside “But what about how they ride when it’s rough?” we hear you ask. “That’s what we really want to know.” And we plan to tell you. But our contention is that there’s more to boating-and enjoying it-than this one element. Unfortunately, and unfairly, bar talk often centers around this, so here we go.

We chose a day when the waves were four to five feet with a six-second period-your typical “rough day.” We ran the boats 100 feet apart at 29 mph directly into the waves. It didn’t matter which boat we were in, it was uncomfortable. Anyone but a masochist would slow down or change course, but we’re here for science.

The graphs on page 86 (see “Graphic Violence”) represent the two boats hitting the same wave. Sharp readers will note that the impacts shown for the two do not exactly coincide. The time each boat hits a wave varies, and a given wave isn’t consistent in shape over its length. Since the boats couldn’t be tied abreast of each other, this is the best anyone can do.

We made numerous runs. For statistical accuracy, we examined seven individual waves for each boat and on each run.

Before giving you the numbers, let’s just say that our accelerometer numbers are dead accurate. But on test day the time between entering a wave, bottoming out, and leaving the wave occurred in less than 0.3 seconds-which is not uncommon. According to Deknatel, “That’s too short a time for your body and brain to process the full effect of the event.” The accelerometer, however, is capable of measuring what we can’t feel.

To accurately compare the ride for a real human, not the machine, you need to look at more than just the peaks of the graph (maximum G force). You need to look at the steepness of the graph’s slope (the time it takes to reach that force), too. A boat that develops more Gs doesn’t necessarily mean it has a harsher ride. It depends on how fast that force is applied. For example, if your 250-pound buddy gently leans on you, what you feel is different than if he were to hit you with a running tackle.

The curve for the cat peaks at 3 Gs; the V-hull, on the other hand, peaks at 4, meaning the cat has 25 percent less gravitational force.

We can also see that the cat consistently decelerated slower when it hit the wave than the V-hull did. It had an average deceleration of 0.287 seconds, compared to the V-hull’s 0.081 seconds-which is 3.5 times faster.

The cat not only landed with less force, it decelerated slower as well. The two combined say it has the more comfortable head-sea ride.

Our test day was rough, so much so that our testers were hard-pressed to say from their gut which rode softer. But, again, the machine is more sensitive than any human, and numbers don’t lie: The cat’s numbers were clearly better.

Later tests also showed the cat delivered lower Gs and slower decelerations while running downsea, in quartering seas, and in the trough. So it’s the most comfortable boat right? Well, not so fast.

Rough Guide We weren’t through testing yet-although some tests were hardly high science.

For example, to see how wet riding each hull was, we taped paper towels to the front of the console. Cats often “sneeze,” or throw a fine mist on certain headings. In this case, and even in the test day’s rough conditions, both sets of towels came back dry.

Then there were issues we couldn’t quantify, such as how a V-hull can dig in its bow going downsea to occasionally make steering difficult, or how in quartering seas a cat’s two hulls catch at different times, requiring constant small steering adjustments.

And there were things that we didn’t have time to test, such as the effect of weight. Typically, a V-hull rides better as it gets loaded down with gear and fuel, which is just the opposite of a cat. Also, our offshore tests were on closely spaced waves. On widely spaced rollers, where boats become airborne, the results would have been different.

In the end, for many boaters, especially those who seem to spend more time in gin mills and chat rooms than on the water, ride quality simply means how softly a boat handles head seas. By that standard, as measured by our accelerometers, and in our test conditions, the cat was the clear winner.

But ask yourself, how often do you go out in weather like that? To make the results of our tests worthwhile for you, ask yourself, “Which boat rides better in the conditions I expect to meet?”

For example, if you have to run far and fast to get to an offshore fishing ground, the cat is a better choice. If you fish close to home, and drift or troll more than flat-out running, the V-hull would be better.

Take all our tests into consideration, and the boat you buy will be the right boat-your Mr. Smoothie.

This Speedy 70-Foot Power Catamaran Is Designed To Cut Through Rough Waters

Back in April, Storm Kathleen slammed into the west coast of Ireland as a fearsome Force 10 gale, packing 113 km/hr winds and 15-foot waves. While locals sandbagged their homes and prepared for the worst, Frank Kowalski decided it was a swell day for a boat ride.

As owner of Safehaven Marine in County Cork, he’d just launched his brand-new, 70-foot T-2000 Voyager all-weather power catamaran. What Kathleen offered was a chance to put the new super-cat through its paces.

“We knew from scale-model tests that she should be able to tackle waves of more than 65 feet high,” Kowalski tells Robb Report . “But you never know until you’re out there. In the height of the storm, she just shrugged off the waves and weather and performed flawlessly.”

Evolved from Safehaven’s 75-foot XVS20 monohull launched in 2018, Kowalski used his expertise in building commercial, work-boat power catamarans to design the twin-hulled T-2000 Voyager to offer speed with stability.

“The stability in beam seas is what’s key here,” he says. “While we were out recently in a Force 8 with 40-plus knot winds and 12-foot seas, we were able to stop and leave the boat to drift while we retrieved a drone. It just took the waves on the beam with ease. In a monohull, it would have been rolling so badly you couldn’t have stood on the deck.”

Then there’s the sheer velocity that comes with twin, scalpel-thin hulls slicing through waves. With the T-2000’s pair of 1,550 hp MAN V12 diesels driving France Helices SD5 surface drives, the Safehaven can hit a top speed of 91.73 km/hr.

“It’s just the most amazing sight, standing on the stern, watching these huge roostertails behind,” Kowalski adds. “We’ve also incorporated retracting swim platforms so you can see the props spinning on the surface, plus valved exhausts that switch between silenced and straight-through. The noise from those V12s is sensational.”

While Safehaven has been building its Wildcat range of 40-, 53-, and 60-foot power cats for everything from oil-rig support, crew transfer, and even as a military cruiser for Britain’s Royal Navy, they were always pure, no-frills work boats. With this new T-2000, Kowalski is looking to appeal to private buyers searching for something a little different.

His hull No. 1 demonstrator boat has all-diamond-quilted marine leather, well-finished cabinetry, colored LED lighting, and below-deck accommodations for six in three cabins. Hull No. 2—already sold and due for completion in the next 18 months—will up the luxury factor.

“It’s going to a client in the Middle East who plans to use it for just himself and his wife,” says Kowalski. The client has specified a full-width owner’s suite with a central, king-size bed and oversized his-and-hers bathrooms and closets in each hull. “He also wants to go fast—very fast,” Kowalski continues. “So we’ll install twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s, again with surface drives, and a central hydrofoil to reduce drag. The plan is for it to hit a top speed in excess of 69 mph.”

The new T-2000 is also designed to go the distance. With the 2,900-gallon tanks, it has a range of more than 1,000 nautical miles at 34.5 mph, and 1,700 nautical miles at 18 mph. Throttle back to 12 mph and range increases to 3,000-plus nautical miles.

Much of this is down to the yacht’s symmetrical, semi-wave-piercing hulls, made of a carbon-fiber-composite construction, with inverted lower bow sections and a double-chine arrangement that projects spray clear of the boat. The hydrofoil in mid position also means that, at speed in calmish seas, the T-2000 rides with half its hull length out of the water.

To eliminate waves slamming into the bridge deck windshield, Kowalski moved the pilothouse farther back. It also makes for a sleeker profile, giving the T-2000 the look of a single-hull sportsyacht.

As for creature comforts, the main, open-plan salon features an L-shaped Corian-topped galley, with a U-shaped dinette opposite. To enjoy the action, there are bucket-style, shock-absorbing seats for the captain and copilot, a wraparound sofa on the port side, and a single bucket seat to starboard.

The entire helm area gets flooded with light courtesy of the four-panel, angled windshield and quartet of fixed skylights above. To see the boat’s hydrofoil in action, the bridge has a glass panel in the floor that’s also designed for viewing marine life below at night. Most of the windows have half-inch-thick toughened panels to shrug off cascading water.

In finer weather than typically found on coastal Ireland, the T-2000 has a small flybridge with a helm station and sun-lounge area up top, plus a covered stern cockpit with sofas and table for alfresco dining.

This storm-tested, metallic-red demonstrator is available for around $3.35 million (RM14.55 million)
