Deciding on your route and itinerary is vital for setting sail on a successful vacation. First you need to decide on the location, and as you know the Caribbean is one of the best destinations in the world for yacht holidays. With over 50 islands to explore and calm waters, you can never get bored on a Caribbean yacht charter. Make sure you choose a location which will keep everyone happy.

The time of year you want to book your vacation will have a huge influence on your chosen location. You obviously want to avoid the summer or hurricane season! The best time to sail around the Virgin Islands is in the peak season between December to April for the best weather. You can beat the crowds in May and still enjoy warm waters, but most people avoid sailing in the summer between June and November.

Last minute holidays can be stressful, and yacht charters in the Virgin Islands are high in demand – don’t let the holiday of a lifetime quickly slip away from you. Do your research early, speak with a broker from Chartertree and book as soon as possible. Then you have time to build excitement for the trip – and a comfortable yacht charter certainly won’t disappoint.

Sailing Around Windward and Leeward Islands of the Caribbean

The  Caribbean covers a huge region of widely spread islands 2,000 miles (3,218 km) long.

The larger ones have become sovereign countries with broad range of amenities for sailors, while the smaller ones still preserve its untouched rural charm and tranquility.

From the western tip of Cuba to the Leewards in the east, then south to the top of South America and along Venezuela’s north coast – this chain of islands has created a hook-like shape around the Caribbean Sea. Location like this is always an enticing bait for sailing - perfect climate and  array of diverse cultures, customs, cuisines and experiences, water sports and an unlimited number of other attractions.

Planning sailing vacations in Caribbean, you may wish to consider these groupings of the islands as points of your itinerary, as they contain many popular cruising areas and harbor stops. There is no doubt that in the scope of Caribbean bareboat or skippered yacht charters  both groups have their charms and countless reasons to explore, which definitely makes it a great sailing destination.

Caribbean yacht rentals

12 Knots offers eleven yacht charter bases in the Caribbean region, each with unique individual character, providing sailing experience for everyone, from a novice to an experienced sailor. This region comprises more than 700 hundred islands and islets, so you can choose Caribbean sailing vacations with shot and easy hops or more challenging passages.

Taking Caribbean sailing vacations, you will find warm and steady trade winds in picturesque surroundings; discover plenty of great bars and authentic cuisine!

It’s up to you, choosing between the Leeward Caribbean islands with short and easy hops with line-of-sight sailing and the Windward with more challenging open water passages. Wherever you go, you will return home relaxed, refreshed and ready to start planning your next Caribbean sailing adventure.

The Windward islands

Windward Islands located at the southern end of the Caribbean island chain and stretch for over 300 miles to the south-eastern end of the Caribbean Sea. The Windward Islands are simply called so due to their position as they are exposed to the northeast trade winds. For experienced sailors, it can be right choice to sail among the four main islands: Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada. They lay far apart each other allowing open ocean sailing and while steady easterly trade winds, make passages north or south easy. With constant 12 to 25 knots wind, Caribbean sailing is among best in the world. Night anchorages in peaceful and protected areas give sailors freedom to explore and soak up British and French island culture. The islands of St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada  were British colonies until they gained independence during the 1970s. Martinique is still an overseas department of France.

The climate of the Windward Islands is definitely a marine one.

When tropical heat reaches its peak, steady trade winds and daily sea breezes come to rescue.

Typically, dry and wet seasons go hand in hand here. Although the priority of more rainfalls is given to the eastern side of the islands mainly due to the prevailing north-east trade winds there.

The islands east of Puerto Rico were called “Windward Islands” by the Spanish, while the islands south of Puerto Rico were named as “Leewards “. And Dominica positions itself right on the border line between the Windward and the Leeward Islands.

Long time ago some of the islands used to be French colonies, subsequently gained its name as The French Antilles.

The population of the Windward Islands is mostly of African origin, with some exceptions of Chinese and Caucasians. The present day Windward Islands will welcome tourists with upscale resorts, stunning beaches and pleasant sunny weather.

After cruising through the Windward Islands, you may wish to set sails to the Leeward Islands.

The Leeward islands

The Leeward islands are located on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea and form the northeastern boundary between Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean, extending from Puerto Rico to the Windward Islands, forming part of the Lesser Antilles chain.

Although 700 miles long stretch of these magnificent isles mostly constitute the whole body of the Leewards, it provides the abundance of enjoyment: quaint fishing spots, ancient ruins and delicious authentic cuisine.

Blessed with balmy temperatures all around the year, The Leeward Islands are called leeward because they're away from the wind or downwind (in the "lee"). Leeward group of Caribbean islands includes: the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Saint Martin, Saint-Barthelemy, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Saint Kitts, Nevis, Barbuda, Antiqua, Redonda, Montserrat and Guadeloupe.

One of two "sister islands", St Kitts and Nevis, provides a brilliant Caribbean experience, from their picture-perfect beaches and volcanic mountains to friendly locals and layers of history to explore. For the water sport lovers, there are numerous aquatic activities that include fishing, diving, windsurfing and surfing.

St.Kitts and Nevis

Switch from sailing to inland for a change and St.Kitts and Nevis will deliver the most exceptional hiking in the Caribbean. The dormant volcano of Mount Liamuiga is considered to be the toughest to climb. And with the experienced guide you may even try to descend in its crater!

The unspoiled landscape of dry littoral forest and rainforest will present memorable show of fauna and flora. Many plants are of culinary and medical use, and some even used in black magic, as informative guides would point out its botanical value.

The wild life-lovers will not be disappointed with variety of different types of exotic animals.

Actually, the Great Salt Pond has become famous for its largest habitat of green velvet monkeys.

St. Kitts and Nevis will keep you captivated with majestic view of huge conical shells, remains of old sugar mills, along with some other plantation ruins, built in the 18 th century.

Back to water activities, and tourists will be pleased with what these two island can offer: deep-water fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving and more.

Then in order to satisfy your growing appetite visit two popular restaurants: Carambola and the Shipwreck Bar and Grill to enjoy its delicious local meals.

A yacht charter in the Caribbean Leeward Islands offers sailors an unrivalled remarkable experience. Enjoy tropical landscapes, pristine palm-lined beaches and azure waters — all the joys of marine life.

Sailing over the Leeward Islands may have all the pleasures to offer: the Tropical rainforests, glittering coral reefs, and luxury sand beaches. That’s probably why most of the known tourist resorts on these islands play a critical role in their economy, as do banking and fishing. Many of them also rely on their status as a tax haven to promote offshore financial services as a source of government revenue. But there is much more to discover in the Leeward Islands. These Caribbean islands provide great variety of yachts for charter and pleasant sailing vacations. Most of the Leeward Islands are located close to each other with moderate winds from 10 to 15 knots and rather low wavers. BVI is the most popular area for Caribbean charters either bareboat or luxury crewed vacations. This is the right place for the novice sailor’s easy passages in line-of-sight sailing.

The climate of the Caribbean Leeward Islands can be described as tropical, but much drier than in Windward Islands. Though the climate does vary from island to island and can even be different in different parts of the same island. Rainfall increases with elevation and in more southerly latitudes. In some cases trade winds look like refreshing tonic to the tropical heat. There is minor seasonal variation, although the second half of the year, the wet season, is slightly warmer and rainier. The best time for sailing in the Caribbean may be the first half of the year. At this time the temperatures usually range between 81°F (27°C) and 95°F(35°C). Annual rainfall averages about 40 to 50 inches (1016 to 1270 mm). Keep in mind, that nearly every island had been severely damaged by hurricane activity in its recent history.

English is the most widespread language all around the islands, plus many of the people speak French and Dutch on the St Martin Island. Both English-based and French-based Creole are also spoken. The prevailing currency is The East Caribbean dollar. But St Martin is odd man out again, circulating the Netherlands Antilles guilder in the Dutch area and the Euro in the French region. Nevertheless, the US dollar is widely accepted throughout the islands.

If you eager to take part in sporting activities, then you may be pleased to know that cricket is widely played and followed in the former British territories. Besides, as in the rest of the Caribbean, music is also always a big part of local life. Enjoy the magical sounds of calypso, soca, steelpan, reggae, salsa and jazz — all of the mentioned has their adherents.

During your Caribbean yacht charter, you may wish to participate in some major holiday celebrations, including the St Kitts Christmas, New Year carnaval, the annual music festival, as well as Anguilla’s Emancipation Day and Culturama festival on August 1st.

The culture of the Leeward Islands is varied by different influences, including French, Dutch and West Indian. Due to that sailing around the Leeward Islands provides a wonderful choice of cuisine and some great restaurants to satisfy your affection for the finest dishes. By the way, the island of Anguilla offers true gastronomic feasts. When sailing in the Caribbean Leeward Islands, be sure to try freshly caught lobsters with a glass of wine.

Sailing the Caribbean With 12 Knots

So, while planning a Caribbean charter it is highly recommended to decide on how many islands you would like to visit in a given time frame. Research Caribbean boat rentals and determine which island you would like to have as a starting base. Then you can plan an itinerary for the week or ten days, taking into consideration distances between the islands and activities you would like to have, like island tracking, scuba diving, snorkeling, volcano hiking, or even shopping.

12 Knots team will give you plenty of useful information not only on the bareboat charter in Caribbean, but also itineraries, places of interest and peculiarities of each island.

Taking a yacht charter in the Caribbean is just a perfect combination of sailing and relaxation, authentic culture and a range of water sport activities. In a few words, this area may always offer something for everyone in these amazing islands’ surrounding.

Guide: How to book an all-inclusive Caribbean Yacht Charter

T he Caribbean is filled with incredible islands, beautiful hotels and gorgeous beaches. However, most people never get to see more than one island or maybe even more than one beach if you travel on land. Chartering luxury all-inclusive catamarans and sailboats has become significantly more accessible and available throughout the Caribbean and is a truly unique and private way to experience everything the Caribbean has to offer. If you’ve ever been curious about how chartering a boat works and what to expect, this guide is for you.

How does a charter work?

At the most basic level, chartering a yacht is chartering a private, bespoke, luxurious experience that is centered entirely around you and your guests. Unlike booking an all-inclusive hotel with 3,000 of your fellow humans, an all-inclusive charter is about as polar opposite as you get. The only set times are when you depart the dock and when you return. The food you eat, the times you rise, rest and dine are entirely set by you.

While the experience itself is the opposite of a hotel, the actual process of picking and booking your charter is a lot like looking for a resort that suits your needs. First, you’ll want to consider how many guests will be aboard the boat in order to determine how many bedrooms you’ll need.

Next, you’ll want to consider where you want to be in the Caribbean. There are boats focused in different areas, like the BVIs, USVIs, Bahamas, etc. Charter websites will tell you the locations of the vessels and you can go from there.

Budget will also play a big factor in your planning. More and more all-inclusive charter experiences are popping up around the Caribbean and may be a good option. Unlike traditional yacht chartering, all-inclusive charters will typically include everything from your diesel, food, alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages, water equipment and the crew. When looking at more traditional style, non-inclusive charters, you will typically need to budget higher than expected for gas, food and everything else.

Once you select your charter experience, the company or owner will contact you with a preference sheet so they can personalize the entire experience for you. You’ll find common questions like dietary restrictions, types of beverages you enjoy versus ones to avoid, what type of activities you like on a holiday and more in order to plan where the boat will go and what is stocked on that boat.

Where can I look for yachts and book my all-inclusive yacht experience?

There are a number of different brokers that offer seemingly endless options for travelers based on your interests and needs. Sail Play Dine , for example, focuses on the Caribbean and has very clear pricing and inclusions on their website. For example:

booking a yacht charter

You can see on the pricing whether the yacht is all inclusive or an a la carte pricing model, allowing you to make the best choices for your needs. When you have found a few boats of interest, you can inquire with the broker and continue the discussion further to book. Booking via a broker is a lot like booking via a travel agent for any other vacation.

Are all charters all-inclusive?

The short answer is no. While all-inclusive charters are popping up more and more across the world, you’ll typically find these types of charters in popular areas, like the Caribbean. Traditional yacht charters, particularly on larger motor yachts, usually include a charter fee + 30% (more or less) for ancillary items like food budgets and motor oil. If you are looking specifically for an all-inclusive catamaran or sailboat, be sure to ask the broker if you are unsure.

sail charter food

What is the cost of chartering?

The prices vary extensively depending on the type of vessel, quality of the service and the size of the boat. You can find stunning catamarans that accommodate 6 people on a 45-foot catamaran, like the one we had the chance to experience , for about 18,000 USD for one week:

luna booking

Considering the inclusions and the experience, this is a great deal. As you will start to notice, the price increases as the vessels get larger, but there is really something for every price point.

sail luna cabin

What should I bring on a charter?

There are a few differences between a land vacation and a sea vacation, and part of that comes down to the packing. While you may be rocking some 5-inch espadrille wedges on land, boats are pretty much a shoe-free zone at all times. Similarly, there will always be a bit less storage on a boat than at a hotel, so with that in mind, here’s what I would recommend for 7 days at sea:

  • Sunscreen and LOTS of it. Water is a reflective surface so the sun tends to burn you faster at sea.
  • Sunglasses WITH croakies. I’ve lost a few pairs of sunglasses to the ocean, be sure to snag some croakies on amazon before heading to your vacation.
  • 1 pair of sneakers and 1 pair of flip flops. If you do any land activities like hiking or shopping, you’ll want a pair of shoes, but otherwise, leave your 6 pairs of heels at home.
  • Bathing suits and cover ups. You’ll find you’ll spend most of your days lounging out on the boat, soaking up the sun so no need for much else!
  • A few lightweight dresses and long-armed shirts. After a day in the sun, I always like to cover up a bit in the evening for the breeze and also to get out of the sun a bit.
  • Books, kindles & ipads! I love reading on vacation & listening to music from the (usually) built in speakers onboard.

My family and I sailed with a group of 7 other friends for a week on the catamaran, Sol Liv, captained by James along with Robyn who was also the chef. We had an amazing vacation. James and Robyn are great people. They know the BVIs well and took us to so many beautiful spots. Plus, Robyn is a very talented chef. Our vacation was truly relaxing with James and Robyn in charge of all the details. The boat is amazing as well. Truly a floating hotel. We will be talking about this vacation for the rest of our lives.

Best vacation experience ever! Shawn was incredible with the booking process and answered all our crazy questions along the way promptly! Tony & Claudia made our trip truly special. They couldn't have been more accommodating to our group. The food was absolutely fabulous and exceeded our expectations. They were kind, gracious hosts who anticipated our every need. They served with a smile and are a terrific team. They felt like family by the end of the week. We will come back only if we can sail with Tony & Claudia again!

Spectacular once-in-a-lifetime vacation with Voyage Charters and Captain Chris & Chef Jena. Voyage emerged as the clear leader after looking at several charter companies in the area, and were well worth the slight extra expense. Our 59' cat, Miles Away, was immaculate and comfortable, with far more than enough space for our three families. We had considered going without the captain and chef, and were so glad we didn't -- Chris showed us so much more of the islands than we would've been able to attempt ourselves, and made the entire thing effortless and 100% stress-free. His local knowledge (he grew up there) was a bonus. And Jena's meals were impeccable. She not only easily adapted to some special requests we had, but made a birthday breakfast for my daughter. Everything she cooked was tasty and creative, and she was both professional and fun to be around. We all miss them both & wish them the best!

Regarding our trip on 'Sol Liv' in May, 2022, we had a wonderful time with Capt. Tony Cook and his lovely wife Claudia. They took care of our every need and blended in immediately with our group of twelve. All of us were thrilled with the exceptional level of care. Captain Tony coached, bartended, entertained and dozens of other tasks with an eye on customer service. He clearly loves his wife. Claudia had delicious and creative meals and abundant midday treats for us. She made special dishes for dietary concerns. She is the quiet center in the swirl of activity around the boat. They are wonderful people and we were fortunate to spend time with them. Certainly one of our best trips to the islands!

Our vacation booked with Voyage Charters was truly an amazing experience. The vessel, Out of Office, was impeccably clean and well appointed. The bedrooms were cocoon-like ( I swear I haven't slept that well since before having children ), the linens were wonderful too. If you are booking a trip be sure to request Captain Blade and First Mate, Chef and DJ Jena! Given the circumstances there was no doubt that we were going to have a good time. However, with these two as our crew our experience was greatly enhanced. I appreciate their knowledge, professionalism and most off all their wit and candor. Thank you Blade for taking us to such beautiful locations and thank you Jena for taking 11 people on a delightful epicurean adventure 3 times a day!

Captain James Smyly and Robyn Ellor chef extraordinaire accompanied us on No Regrets. We will never, ever forget this incredible trip. From the scenic sails to the five star meals shipped up by Chef Robyn, we couldn’t have asked for a better team to help us have the best vacation ever. They planned a fantastic, found us the best mooring spots, had tons of insider island knowledge, and were just all around the best. Thanks James and Robyn and Voyage!

Denzie and Ryan were absolutely amazing on our trip on the Sol Liv! Truly couldn’t have asked for a better trip between Ryan’s guidance on activities on the islands and denzie’s incredible meals. We are hoping to return as soon as we can and definitely hope to get them on our boat again too!

Congratulations on a superb rebuild! We had a splendid week on Secret Oasis with old and new friends, and the best crew ever. My 7th charter, and it was perfect. Tony and Claudia made the trip wonderful, and as always, I will recommend Voyage for the charter or charters of a lifetime.

We just returned from an 11-guest 6-night BVI trip on the 65’ powercat “Out of Office” (Voyage Charters out of Soper's Hole in Tortola). Our captain was Blade Goodall and our chef was Nia Mora. We have done these trips before and Captain Blade and Chef Nia were by far the best we have ever had. Captain Blade was engaging, knowledgeable, funny, and flexible. We made a number of adjustments to our trip on the fly and he was very accommodating. All of the pre-planned excursion details (Mokes and dinner reservations on Anegada, scuba diving at Virgin Gorda, etc.) were perfect. The unscheduled impromptu activities (e-foils at Virgin Gorda, snorkeling, tubing, water skiing, fishing, bar hopping, etc.) were amazing and Captain Blade always took the time to ensure everyone was having fun. Chef Nia was creative, engaging, and highly talented. Every meal was fantastic and our group of 11 never went hungry! One of the highlights was Chef Nia preparing the 50-pound King Mackerel that Captain Blade helped us catch on the crossing from Anegada to Jost Van Dyke. With zero notice, Chef Nia cancelled her previously planned dinner and prepared an incredible fresh fish dinner complete with homemade teriyaki sauce, watermelon salsa, and perfect rice. This was a lot more work for her but she did it with a smile! Both Captain Blade and Chef Nia worked hard from sunrise to well after sunset each day ensuring that the trip was perfect for all 11 of our guests. We all had tears in our eyes when we said goodbye to them but will definitely request them on a future trip!

Great time with Tate and Justine. We just finished our charter with Tate (captain) and Justine (chef). If was a great vacation with Tate and Justine. They were extremely nice and helped us decide on what plans to make each day. Tate was extremely knowledgeable of the boat and the islands. He grew up in Jost Van Dyke and was able to give us good advice on what to do. My husband liked that Tate was always calm. Justine was a fantastic chef. She made sure our food met the information we provided ahead of time. Every meal was well thought out and delicious. Thank you both for a wonderful experience. The Voyage 520 boat was very nice. I would suggest maybe a couple more bean bags up front for people to lay when the boat is at sail.

Crewed Catamaran charter vacations in the Caribbean

The most popular style of crewed, all-inclusive yacht to charter is a sailing catamaran. Sailing catamarans offer a broad, stable platform with private en-suite guest cabins which are spaced out by the hulls and plenty of space in between. Catamarans also have easy access to the water via the sugar scoops and a number of different outdoor areas including trampolines forward, shaded cockpit with dining table aft and some catamarans also have upper fly bridge decks. A sailing catamaran is the best choice for great value and comfort.

The Caribbean offers crewed charter catamarans for many budgets and party sizes – click the "sort by" links below to find a catamaran that fits your group's specifications or use the search form if you have specific travel dates in mind.
