Maiden refit: How Tracy Edwards’ sailing legend was brought back to life

Helen Fretter

  • Helen Fretter
  • May 15, 2019

Maiden is the Farr-designed 58-footer which Tracy Edwards and her all-female crew sailed to 2nd overall in the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race. The yacht recently had a full restoration before setting off on a round the world trip to raise funds and awareness for girls’ education under the banner of The Maiden Factor

Few yachts, and fewer skippers, become truly famous – famous in the sense that the everyman on the street would recognise them by a single name. Maiden did though, as did Tracy.

The controversial all-female team, led by a petite dynamo of a skipper, gained a celebrity status that went beyond the sports pages of the British press. From her christening by HRH The Duchess of York to the team’s final, triumphant return back to the Solent in 1990 as double leg winners (the crew wearing swimsuits), Maiden attracted unprecedented column inches to become one the most famous yachts of the era.

But after the race, while Edwards’ remained in the spotlight, Maiden was sold on. Eventually, after 24 years under various ownerships, the aluminium-hulled yacht was found languishing in the Indian Ocean.

maiden-before-refit-tracy-edwards-sailing-yacht

Large sections of hull had to be cut out and replaced due to metal corrosion

Maiden had been abandoned in Eden Island Marina, on Mahe, in the Seychelles and was corroding into oblivion. When Edwards heard of her plight, she launched a crowd-funding campaign to bring Maiden home, which unlocked a surprising depth of affection for the boat. Over £40,000 was raised as hundreds of individuals pledged just a few pounds towards her recovery.

It took nearly three years to secure the full funds to ship Maiden back – she was long past being sailable – with the substantial refit costs covered by the generosity of Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein of Jordan, daughter of King Hussein of Jordan, who had sponsored Maiden ’s original Whitbread bid. She eventually made it back to Hamble in 2017 , where she underwent a thorough refit , before setting sail on her three-year world tour in late 2018.

The refit brought Maiden full circle. The yacht had been designed by Bruce Farr and first raced the 1981-82 Whitbread as Disque D’Or III , before competing in the 1986-87 BOC single-handed challenge. Edwards shipped her back from Cape Town to Hamble the same year. When the crew motored her from Southampton up the Hamble River, she nearly sank.

The Tracy Edwards profile – why sailing’s trailblazer is back with Maiden

Sportspeople – and sailors are no exception here – can be a little… one-dimensional. That single focus which makes competitive…

Her original refit, in preparation for the 1989 Whitbread, was done against the clock and on the cheap – her famous grey livery, for example, was never quite the right colour for her sponsors Royal Jordanian Airways because the team used a few pots of end of line paint they’d got free.

This time, the paint is the right shade of grey. However, the project has many echoes of the past. Howard Gibbons, who was the original project manager for Maiden , returned to manage the restoration and refit.

maiden-refit-tracy-edwards-sailing-yacht-crew-reunion

The original Maiden crew were reunited with the yacht last year

Amelia Ralphs, who is the crew engineer and was a key part of the refit team, recalls: “I think what’s fun about this project is that there are so many manufacturers and individuals that were around for the original who have invested in it this time around.”

Maiden ‘s original specification

She points out a custom bow hatch, which Goiot created for the boat as an exact replica of the original. “We haven’t paid anything more for that hatch than we would have for a normal off-the-shelf one, but Goiot have invested in the legacy of what we’re trying to achieve here.”

The restoration aimed to balance between remaining authentic to Maiden ’s original glory, and bringing her in line with modern coding requirements. Throughout her world tour, Maiden will take paying guests on both offshore legs and day sails, so she needs to meet modern safety and environmental requirements, be easy to handle, and be suitable for publicity and marketing activation activities, as well as transocean passages.

Above decks, the biggest changes have been to the rig, as the runners and vast overlapping headsails favoured by Whitbread racers are not practical for corporate sailing.

Instead Maiden has a new fractional rig with aft-swept spreaders, created by Marine Results and Seldén. Hamble designer Tony Castro has also been involved in much of the design work for the refit.

Otherwise Maiden is strikingly similar to her Whitbread layout on deck. The deep working pit area has barely changed. “It’s really unique because it’s just so old fashioned, but it’s really functional,” comments Ralphs. “The depth makes it really safe, you feel really secure in it.”

Detailed study

Many of the fittings are in the original positions. For reference, Ralphs found herself studying an incredibly detailed scale model a Maiden super-fan had made.

“It was in a museum and then it moved to my kitchen – I’ve been really worried about breaking it for months,” says Ralphs. “And that model is so accurate it was genuinely valuable because there are details on that model you can’t find in any picture.”

maiden-refit-tracy-edwards-sailing-yacht-amelia-ralphs-credit-rick-tomlinson

Engineer Amelia Ralphs has worked to ensure the crew can be self-sufficient in maintaining Maiden during the round the world trip. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

The winch layout is almost identical – just two backstay runner winches have been removed, leaving 14 still on deck.

“We’ve got pedestals but moving back to the original set up we’ve got string pulls rather than buttons, it’s all above deck so there’s no risk of leaks down below,” says Ralphs.

They will sail offshore with nine crew, inshore with 12, including a permanent team of three. Ralphs says a dip-pole gybe requires eight pairs of hands. There are analogue instruments on deck, all chosen to be as close a match as possible.

“The compasses were the last two Plastimo black surrounded with black card compasses I could find in all of Europe – from two different countries – because that was the original colour scheme on the compasses.”

maiden-refit-tracy-edwards-sailing-yacht-instruments-credit-rick-tomlinson

Instruments are a mix of retro-style analogue and latest B&G electronics. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

The entire hull and deck went through a lengthy shot blasting process to strip 30 years of paint, filler and insulating foam back to bare metal. The deck itself had relatively little other work done to it, which has left some areas pooling with water as it’s no longer perfectly fair.

The hull, on the other hand, required major structural repairs. The elegant sloped transom was almost entirely rebuilt, and the keel had to be largely replaced. The skeg was found to be almost entirely rotted away, and was removed.

Up to standard

Interior structural work was needed to both repair corrosion and upgrade the yacht to meet modern safety requirements. Watertight bulkheads have been added abaft the sail locker and galley, as well as a proper forwards heads and fireproof engine and machinery bay.

maiden-refit-tracy-edwards-sailing-yacht-bunks-credit-rick-tomlinson

The storage frame and bunk layout is very similar to her Whitbread days, although Maiden will sail with three fewer crew offshore. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

Otherwise the interior changes have been minor, the bunk numbers reduced to double rather than triple stacks as Maiden will be sailing with nine, rather than 12-14 crew.

A pilot berth has been added next to the chart table, and the analogue instruments on deck are supported by full-spec electronics and comms systems from B&G, Inmarsat and Mastervolt, including four on-deck cameras.

One area would be the envy of many a round the world crew – what Ralphs calls ‘the library’, a convenient space just under the companionway with a single seat, wet locker, small cuddies for personal items and an aft heads.

maiden-refit-tracy-edwards-sailing-yacht-nav-station-credit-rick-tomlinson

The nav station is abaft a new watertight bulkhead and also incorporates a pilot berth for the first time. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

It’s a place to store sunglasses and grab bags, or regroup your thoughts before coming on or off watch, separated from the living quarters by a new watertight door.

Maiden may no longer be racing, but her round the world voyage – from the UK to India then on to Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, the Pacific North West, down to Uruguay, around Cape Horn , back up to the Caribbean, through the Panama canal in both directions, a transatlantic back to Britain, and then a final return to Jordan – will be an epic endeavour.

'maiden': groundbreaking 1989 sailing race for all-female crew.

Kenneth Turan

A new documentary tells the story of the first all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World sailing race in 1989. The crew was led by a 24-year-old and the boat was called Maiden.

NOEL KING, HOST:

It is called the longest race on Earth - 33,000 miles around the globe by yacht. It's grueling. A new documentary called "Maiden" tells the story of the 1989 Whitbread round-the-world race.

(SOUNDBITE OF DOCUMENTARY, "MAIDEN")

UNIDENTIFIED ANNOUNCER: It was the most extreme, debilitating temperatures you've ever lived in; -20 with the windchill. That is really hard.

KING: MORNING EDITION and Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan has seen it. He's with me now.

Good morning, Ken.

KENNETH TURAN, BYLINE: Good morning.

KING: So sailing - not the...

TURAN: (Laughter).

KING: ...Most popular sport in the world. Yachting is probably even more niche, and yet you found this movie really appealing.

TURAN: Yeah. Well, you know, I grew up in Brooklyn. You know, yachting is not in my past...

KING: (Laughter).

TURAN: ...You know? But this is a great, great human story. I mean, this was the first all-women's crew to go in this around-the-world race. The film shows how they put it together and what happened during the race. I've seen it more than once, and I was on the edge of my seat both times.

KING: You've seen it with more than once.

TURAN: Yeah. So I - you know, I know the ending, but I didn't - it didn't matter. I wanted to see it again.

KING: So great story is what you're saying. How is it told? This is a fairly conventional, standard-style documentary or does the filmmaker do something a little different?

TURAN: It's - it uses the conventional techniques of documentary but raised to the highest level imaginable. There's footage taken on the boat at the time by one of the crew members, so you can actually see these women running the boat. But the best part is that today, they interview almost everyone who was on the boat, including Tracy Edwards, who was the skipper. Now we see them decades later looking back, telling what the experience was like. We see the men who were disbelieving, who were scoffers. They look back on what they were thinking then. It's amazing to see people reflecting today on the reality we also see.

KING: Ken, one of the really interesting things about this race was not just that it was led by a woman skipper with an all-female crew but that everyone else was a man. They seemed to be fine looking down on these women.

TURAN: The only word I can use about the sexism of the men is that it was just so primitive. It just infuriated the women that they were not taken seriously, that the media only asked them questions about their makeup. They never got asked sailing questions. I mean, the whole thing is just kind of beyond belief, but it just kind of made them more determined. They said, we love this. We are doing this not to prove a point. We're doing it because we love sailing. We want to be able to do it. Get out of our way.

KING: I was watching the trailer earlier. And some of the footage really is incredible - just the flinty look in the women's...

KING: ...Eyes back in 1989 - like, it is extraordinary to see them. You know, this race took place in 1989, so we're 30 years out from it. Does it still feel relevant?

TURAN: Oh, absolutely. You know, first of all, you know, as - doesn't even need to be said. There are constant workplace issues, women not taken seriously. This is still an issue around the world. But, really, I mean, the thing about this film is that it transcends any way of looking at it as kind of relevance because it's such an amazing story. It transports you so much. You know, there's a way that this film reminds me about "RBG," which was a documentary about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, which was extremely popular. And it was popular in red states as well as blue states because this was not just a portrait of a liberal justice. This was a great human story - a story of achievement, of humanity, just a kind of story that you really want to watch because it involves you so greatly and so deeply. I mean, you will be flattened by the time it ends. You will just be floored.

KING: The movie is called "Maiden," and it's in theaters today. Kenneth Turan reviews movies for MORNING EDITION and the Los Angeles Times.

Ken, thanks so much.

TURAN: Oh, thank you.

  • Trivia In 2014, Tracy Edwards learned that her boat, "Maiden," was rotting on the rocks in The Seychelles, a small group of islands in the Indian Ocean off East Africa, where it had been abandoned by its owner two years before. She crowdfunded the money to repurchase the wreck in 2016, and took another year to restore it at Southampton, where she and her crew had rebuilt it the first time in 1989. As of 2019, it is on a three-year world tour to raise money and awareness for girls' access to education in poorer nations. Her project is called "The Maiden Factor."

Tracy Edwards : We were a real mixed bag of mostly dropouts, misfits and gypsies and nomads. We were all running away from something, but we were family units... I mean surreal family units.

Latest News: FRENCH SAILORS MAKING HISTORY – 2027 OCEAN GLOBE ANNOUNCED

days hrs mins secs

  • Flyer Class

Tracy Edwards MBE and title sponsor of The Maiden Factor World Tour, DP World, the global logistics leader, are delighted to announce that the iconic yacht Maiden and her all-female crew will enter the 2023 Ocean Globe Race.

Maiden will take a break from her world tour, which began in September 2021, having covered nearly 30,000nm visiting 20 destinations and engaging with schools, charities and organisations as part of her mission to educate, empower and elevate girls, increasing their life and career choices and also raising money to fund girls’ educational projects around the world. The OGR will provide a great opportunity to amplify Maiden’s mission and the importance of educating all girls for better futures for all.

Maiden who is currently in Cape Town, SA, will sail back to the UK for final preparations for the September 2023 start, once again with a young female skipper and crew of up and coming sailors from around the world, who will no doubt inspire another generation of women and girls to follow their dreams.

With so many of the beautiful yachts from previous Whitbreads being rescued and restored, as has Maiden of course, it seems only fitting that they should be raced around the world again! Tracy Edwards MBE

In 1989, Tracy Edwards skippered the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, becoming the first woman to receive the Yachtsman of the Year Trophy.

At 11am on September 2, 1989, Maiden approached the start line for the Whitbread Round the World Race. They set off among the 22-strong fleet to begin the first leg to Uruguay, ultimately placing 3rd in their class. Although the girls were disappointed, the yachting press was astonished by their accomplishment.

After a three-week stopover, Maiden embarked on the 7,300-mile marathon from Uruguay to Australia. They opted for a southern route and faced numerous challenges, including icebergs, freezing temperatures, frostbite, contaminated gas, and a nine-day satellite signal outage. During the journey, two sailors from competitor yacht Creightons Naturally fell overboard, with one, Anthony Phillips, unable to be revived. Doctor Claire Russell stayed on Maiden’s radio for two days, providing guidance on how to keep the other man, Bart van den Dwey, alive.

Despite the treacherous conditions, Maiden arrived in Perth, Australia, ten days ahead of its nearest competitor and earned the Beefeater Trophy. They then made a short 14-day journey to New Zealand, winning that leg and extending their overall lead to 28 hours. Maiden underwent repairs and maintenance in New Zealand before setting off on the next Southern Ocean leg, around Cape Horn to Uruguay. Although the leg was difficult, the team persevered and arrived in Uruguay, where their Godmother, The Duchess of York, welcomed them.

The leg to Ft Lauderdale in Florida was not without its challenges, with Maiden finishing in third place.

Maiden embarked on its final leg to Southampton, surviving a tornado and the last five days without food, and arrived home to a hero’s welcome. They secured 2nd place overall in their class, the best result for a British boat in 17 years, and remain unbeaten to this day.

Tracy and her team faced formidable obstacles, including opposition and sexism, but still managed to secure victory in two of the most grueling legs of the course, ultimately placing second overall. This achievement marked a turning point for the sailing community, creating new opportunities for female competitors.

In recognition of her remarkable accomplishments, Tracy was awarded an MBE and became the first woman to receive the prestigious ‘Yachtsman of the Year’ trophy.

Sailing is in Heather Thomas ‘ blood, coming from a long line of mariners. Growing up in Otley, West Yorkshire, the sea was not close by, so Heather began her journey, dinghy sailing at the local lake, Otley Sailing Club, encouraged by her father. The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation gave Heather her first taste of ocean sailing, with a bursary to compete in the Pacific Leg of the 15/16 Clipper Round the World Race. She has since worked in a variety of roles and vessels in the marine industry- from flotilla skipper to teaching young people in the Caribbean, delivering a yacht from the Galapagos to New Zealand, running flotilla holidays in the Ionian Islands and as Watch Leader for the Ocean Youth Trust North. Maiden has been a big inspiration to Heather throughout her sailing career, so to sail on her is a dream come true. Whilst on the Maiden programme she gained her RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (commercially endorsed) and loves inspiring young girls to dream big, a value that was instilled in her by her parents, who continue to be her biggest supporters.

Rachel Burgess is used to unexpected calls for help in the middle of the night, be it in the wilds of the Southern Ocean or as a vet of 12 years standing in remote locations. “It makes you appreciate the value of getting sleep when you can,” said Rachel. All the expertise of completing a Covid-interrupted Clipper Race Circumnavigation (2019-2022) as well as her long-standing involvement in veterinary practice in the UK as well as in Australia will be put to good use now that she is confirmed as being on board Maiden for the OGR. The 36 year old originally tried out in 2021 but simply wasn’t able to commit the time at that juncture. Now she can, and takes her place as Chief Mate, right-hand to skipper Heather. Rachel has a huge volume of experiences to call upon even though she did not get her first taste of sailing until she was 16 years old taking part in a Tall Ship expedition that went from Weymouth to Dublin via several other ports of call. She graduated from the University of Glasgow as a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. Rachel rekindled her passion for the open water when based in Newcastle on Australia’s eastern seaboard and has made a great fist of combining her working life with what she used to view as her hobby. Now she is committed full-time to Maiden for the OGR, looking forward to ‘the rawness of the ocean,’ although she does nurse a fear of ‘running out of Haribo.’ The huge swells of the Southern Ocean are nothing compared to that.

In 1979, the yacht now known as Maiden was originally designed by the accomplished boat designer Bruce Farr under the name DISQUE D’OR 3 for the Swiss Ocean Racing Club. The club sought a lightweight and easily maneuverable ocean racing yacht for extended passage races, including the 1981-82 Whitbread Round the World Race. Pierre Fehlmann, a well-known Swiss yachtsman who had also participated in the previous Whitbread Race, skippered the vessel. Maiden, then DISQUE D’OR 3, completed the race and secured 4th place overall in the 1981-82 Whitbread competition.

Tracy was compelled to sell Maiden at the end of the race.

In 2014, she received news that Maiden had been abandoned and was slowly deteriorating in the Seychelles. Determined to preserve this exceptional maritime treasure, she launched a fundraising campaign to acquire the vessel and bring her back to the UK. Three years later, in April 2017, Maiden was transported to Southampton and underwent a thorough renovation, giving rise to The Maiden Factor initiative.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

makten yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

makten yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

makten yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

makten yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

makten yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

makten yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

makten yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

SS South Steyne still trying to find a home as NSW's only heritage-listed vessel commemorates anniversary

A graphic of a large black-and-white steam ferry with a bridge in the background.

New South Wales's only heritage-listed ship is celebrating 86 years at sea, but the prized steam ferry has also been left without a permanent home going on eight years.

The SS South Steyne was launched from Leith, Scotland on April 1, 1938, and arrived in Sydney after a rigorous 64-day maiden voyage.

The ship's rare Harland and Wolff steam engines, which were put together by the same people who built the Titanic, made the South Steyne one of the fastest steam ferries in the world during the 1940s and 50s.

A black-and-white photograph of the Queen amongst a crowd.

Queen Elizabeth II, who was fond of the vessel, recommissioned it during her visit to Australia in 1988. It was also her royal yacht while she was in the country.

Over the years it has operated as the Manly ferry it's estimated the South Steyne sailed from Manly to Circular Quay more than 100,000 times and transported more than 92 million passengers.

It was also an information centre for the 2000 Summer Olympics and a floating restaurant.

But the ferry has now been inactive for years, currently moored in Berrys Bay in Sydney's lower north shore.

A black-and-white photograph of a large steam ferry at sea.

Brian McDermott, who has owned the ship for the past 30 years, recalled the moment he was told the ferry had to be moved.

"We got kicked out of Darling Harbour when they were redeveloping the whole site down there with the convention centre," he said.

"People came up with some objections.

"But they promised us faithfully we would get a new wharf just around there at the Maritime Heritage Precinct area next to the Maritime Museum. Now that was eight years ago come this Anzac Day."

Mr McDermott has frequently tried to find a permanent home for the South Steyne as he keeps up with the expensive costs for ongoing maintenance and wharf space.

"We're stuck in limbo. We've been looking for a long time," he said.

"We've reached out to I think every heritage minister and every transport minister for the last eight years, and it keeps coming back to the scenario that there is a real-estate shortage, or everybody wants to have a waterfront view on Sydney Harbour.

"People want to build a block of flats right down the waterfront and therefore they don't really want to have the vessels and commercial activity both coming and going to disturb the peace.

"There just didn't seem to be anything available on Sydney Harbour, and that's the problem for us."

A ship's wheel.

Berthing options under consideration

Mr McDermott said he had a meeting with the office of Transport Minister Jo Haylen last December and "other meetings" that were "promising".

The ABC reached out to Ms Haylen's office but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson told the ABC that berthing options for the South Steyne were still being considered.

"Transport for NSW Maritime is aware that there are limited locations for vessels such as the South Steyne to berth in Sydney Harbour and we are exploring berthing options with the owner and stakeholders," they said.

"There is need to both retain and explore increasing vessel storage options on the harbour to meet future expected demand."

A large ferry sails past a harbour with the city skyline in the background.

Mr McDermott believes the ferry will "survive" the coming years and primarily wants to see it reach its 100th anniversary in 2038.

"It'll survive, the ship will survive. It'll go from owner to owner from government to government. The people of New South Wales will just make sure the ship survives," he said.

"I'd just love to see the ship get through to the centenary more than anything else. And it will be one of the most fabulous things to have the ship steaming on Sydney Harbour on its centenary in 2038.

"That would probably be a bit of a dream. I don't think I'll be around to see it, but it'll be a great thing for the people of New South Wales."

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More
