As a member of the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco we have reciprocal privileges to use the NYYC club (and Vice Versa) when we're are traveling. This goes for the NYYC Harbor Court station in Newport, RI. Our Commodore was having his "Commodore Cruise" in New England and the closing dinner was to be at Harbor Court. Now, with COVID there was a limit on guests amd total crowd for a dinner. We had over 100 cruising ew England and over 80 were due for the final dinner. Add Henri the hurricane to the mix and we had some challenges for the dinner. We had cocktails on the front lawn. Then, the NYYC set is up outside in the motor court area for dinner. This allowed us to get our entire group together. Weather was perfect. Calm Before the storm as they say. We even had the opportunity to watch the clubs "colors" ceremony when they retreat the flag each evening prior to sunset. Now getting to the food and service. With COVID it is especially hard to find amd keep good servers. We struggle with that at our club. It here at the NYYC. First they had plenty of staff. A welcome reprise from those businesses who can't seem to ramp staff back up. Even more impressive, their staff are trained very well. Women first, serve from left, remove from Right etc... I was thoroughly impressed that during COVID, and the night before a major hurricane, the NYYC was able to host the dinner for the StFYC and do so at such a best-of-class level. If you have a chance to visit Harbor Court, don't miss it!

I recently came for a cocktail with some co-workers. The grounds and views are stunning. If you are ever so fortunate as to accept an invitation from a member please come for a visit! Our waitress was kind and attentive. She took everyone's drink orders quickly and our orders were correct. (I did have to describe what was in a Cape Codder though). Lovely location, great to soak in a beautiful summer day. We may get to enjoy a dinner here in the future and I look forward to updating my review.

Gorgeous venue, with arguably the best views in town. Delicious, fresh, and high quality food. The menu is generally not very large, but offers a good selection of choices. The venue has different events, and menu changes each day - sometimes there are buffets. The service is courteous, although registering when walking in can be lengthy. The outdoor patio and lounge chairs area is very enjoyable. Lunches tend to be less busy and more peaceful. Dinners can get crowded and loud with many visitors who come to watch the sunset. The boat water parking is located right below.

I had the opportunity to enjoy this fine establishment for my brother-in-law's naval change of command ceremony dinner. The grounds of the club are beautiful and meticulously maintained. All the staff are gracious and welcoming - the bartenders even kept an eye on my nephews during some dull dinner moments. Cocktails served on the patio overlooking the harbor with a beautiful (and STEEP!) grassy hill down to the water really set the mood for a nice evening. The formal dinner was chicken, leeks and some sort of grain - all very good and well prepared. Service was impeccable. Even though I'm not exactly your "yacht club" type o' gal, I'd definitely say I'm a fan of this place :)

Beautiful place to have an event. The staff is wonderful and the food is magnificent. As a sailor myself it's one of the places I love to go to. The view from the hill is amazing. I never get tired of it.

An exquisite venue on Newport Harbor. I've attended several weddings and social events at this venerable Rhode Island private establishment. Members may extend privileges to friends who can take advantage of the lovely lodging or the bar and dining facilities. You can't go wrong paying a visit to Harbor Court. Remember: no cell phones in club public areas!

Great lobster roll. Fresh and good volume. Friendly service but slow. Not much dessert menu. Coffee taste nice.

New York Yacht Club to replace, expand docks in Newport Harbor. Here's what to know.

NEWPORT ― After meeting with Newport’s Waterfront Commission, Planning Board and City Council and moving through the public comment period with no objections, the New York Yacht Club is only waiting for state CRMC approval to begin demolishing its existing docks and replacing them with larger concrete floating docks.

City of Newport spokesman Tom Shevlin explained that proposals involving docks and piers are generally controlled by the state because the CRMC has jurisdiction over the state’s waterways, although the city does have the ability to file an objection as part of the CRMC approval process.

Laura Dwyer, the CRMC’s public educator and information coordinator, responded to The Daily News’ request for comment via email saying, "I can tell you that the application is currently being reviewed by CRMC staff. That review is not yet complete, however, so I cannot provide any details on the rest of your inquiry.”

The fact that the CRMC is currently reviewing the New York Yacht Club’s application is of course widely available public information and the reason The Daily News contacted the CRMC for comment on this topic in the first place.

What is the City of Newport's role in approving the application?

Shevlin explained the city’s Historic District Commission has some say in applications regarding issues specifically related to the preservation of historic vistas or historic landscapes, and the city might object to applications for certain proposals such as the extension of a pier if it were to impact the city’s harbor operations. In this case however, said Shevlin, “From what the Waterfront Commission heard, they determined that there wasn’t any need for objection…it went from waterfront to planning to City Council without objection.”

On the waterfront: 400 homes, 350 marina slips: Take a look at the plan proposed in Portsmouth

“From what we were told, it was the applicant’s desire to accommodate different types of vessels within the confines of their pier footprint," said Shevlin.

What does the New York Yacht Club proposal entail?

At a Nov. 10, 2022, Waterfront Commission meeting, Chairman Paul Harden recused himself because he is a member of the New York Yacht Club and Vice-Chair Fred Roy took the chair. Yacht club representative Ken Bacco, along with attorney Josh Parks and engineer Rick St. Jean described the plans, which consist of removing the existing docks and replacing them with a floating concrete pier with a wave attenuator.

Sailing away: Sail Newport fosters the sport of sailing for all

In an email reply to a Daily News question about what would change for the Yacht Club and its members, and what would change visibly or functionally for recreational boaters and other users of Newport Harbor, The New York Yacht Club said:

"The current timber pier is approximately 30 years old, and the frequency and cost of annual repairs is rising. Additionally, storms and high tides have resulted in significantly more frequent overtopping of the fixed structure than in recent history, and engineers have advised that it is only a matter of time until the force of the water demolishes the pier. Switching from a fixed pier structure to floating concrete docks alleviates these concerns and reflects current industry best practices."

A Newport Daily News examination of the renderings reveals the new dock would run north in the same manner as the current dock and would actually be shortened by approximately 12 feet. The Daily News also noticed the proposal would lengthen the L-dock which extends east from the end of that dock into the harbor from its current length of 60 feet to approximately 198 feet – more than three times longer than the current L-dock.

The new configuration, in tandem with Shevlin’s comment about the yacht club seeking to accommodate different types of vessels, seems to suggest the Yacht Club anticipates being able to accommodate much larger vessels once the docks are replaced. The proposal would also replace the existing floating docks, which also jut east-northeast into the harbor, with longer concrete floating docks for dinghies and racing sailboats.

The yacht club representatives at that November Waterfront Commission meeting indicated there would be no effect on the nearby mooring field, with the closest mooring 180 feet away. They also mentioned the yacht club intends to conduct some major repairs to its seawall – a separate CRMC application and city permitting process which also seems to be moving along smoothly – before starting the dock replacement.

The New York Yacht club explained in an email that while the two projects are separate, they do share motivations including rising sea levels and rising annual maintenance costs for both the sea wall and the docks.

The CRMC did not respond to any follow-up questions regarding their timeframe for rendering and publicizing a decision about the yacht club’s application, although the harbormaster’s report at that November Waterfront Commission meeting said, “Overall, CRMC has been very positive and cooperative. The pier is in Type II waters and normally this would be a hard NO, but they want an articulable need, and we can do this…”

A CRMC document titled “Guidelines for the Development of Harbor Management Areas” indicates Type II waters are “Low Intensity Use Areas” where “The Council's goal is to maintain and, where possible, restore the high scenic value, water quality, and natural habitat values of these areas, while providing for low-intensity uses that will not detract from these values.”

Open seas: Friends of the Waterfront seek council intervention for Newport Harbor Walk connection

It continues:

“Fishing, swimming, aquaculture, conservation areas, non-commercial recreational mooring areas, maintenance of existing navigational channels, transient anchorage areas, residential boating facilities, and launching ramps are allowable uses in Type 2 waters. Commercial mooring areas, improvement dredging, and marinas are prohibited uses in Type 2 waters.”

How did the Newport Waterfront Commission vote?

The yacht club representatives stressed to the Waterfront Commission in November that the new dock would not entail a use change, would not make the yacht club a marina, and would not offer overnight dockage. The Waterfront Commission at the conclusion of that meeting voted unanimously to approve the project as presented.

The New York Yacht Club's emailed comments explained that while it would be premature to be specific about a timeline right now given the project's dependency on receiving the necessary government approval, the construction would need to be completed in the October through April time frame in order to accommodate the need for a working pier during the regatta season.

This 1925 home listed for nearly $3M brings the French countryside to North Jersey

3-minute read.

new york yacht club in newport

A 99-year-old home recently listed for a shade under $3 million brings a scene from the French countryside to Montclair's posh Warren Place.

Sitting amid a sea of clapboard and shingles, 67 Warren Place in Montclair is a provincial cottage designed by Frank Joseph Forster, an award-winning architect who like many Americans embraced French culture after the First World War. Listed for sale in late March, the home was expanded in 2011 but retained its aesthetic while gaining modern conveniences, according to Tamima Friedman and Robert Baldwin of Keller Williams NJ Metro Group in Montclair.

Friedman and Baldwin jointly listed the six-bedroom, six-bathroom for nearly $3 million. The home for decades has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places owing to its standout architecture.

It was built in 1925, three years after Hoboken native Milton E. Hatfield bought a roughly square, one-acre property on the corner of Eagle Rock Way and Warren Place for $35,000. The property already had an 11-room home, according to a May 1922 report in The Montclair Times.

Hatfield, who had been living at 107 Elm St., wanted something different, however. He quickly sold the home after promising the new owner alterations, The Montclair Times reported. Hatfield kept the backyard.

Born in July 1876, Hatfield worked as an investment banker and statistician for the banking firms run by the Kountze Brothers and Brown Brothers as well as Harriman, Ripley and Co., according to his New York Times obituary. Before that, he attended Packard Business College in New York and Stevens Institute of Technology. For his day job, he studied global economies, according to The Montclair Times. In his spare time, he sailed as a member of the Indian Harbor and New York yacht clubs.

More: North Jersey home that helped give birth to unique 'pink' neighborhood listed for $2.95M

More than your average recreational sailor, Hatfield was competitive. Aboard his small sloop Nautilus, he won the New York Yacht Club's 1921 Navy Cup Challenge during the club's annual cruise.

The cruise took the entire fleet from Glen Cove off Long Island to the Newport Yacht Club in Rhode Island, according to an account by in the September 1921 issue of boat publication "The Rudder." It was the club's first cruise since 1916 due to interruptions caused by the war that led many club members to join the Navy Reserve if not donate their yachts to the military. There were stops at New Haven, New London and Block Island along the way. There were also cup races for sail- and motor-powered vessels, including the Navy Cup Challenge for sloops and schooners.

A few years after returning to Montclair with the cup, Hatfield would hire Forster to build 67 Warren. A champion of the French provincial style who studied architecture at Cooper Union between 1903 and 1908, Forster produced more houses in the style stateside than anyone had before, Gavin Townsend wrote in his 1995 essay on the style for the architectural journal Arris.

The style was rare before World War I, Virginia Savage McAlester wrote in her book "A Field Guide to American Houses." After fighting for France during the war, Americans became entranced by the nation and the rebuilding of its small villages, she wrote.

Among those who rose to prominence replicating the homes was Forster, a New York City native a decade Hatfield's junior. Forster mostly stayed in the New York metro area, but he nonetheless designed homes in Toledo, Ohio; Houston and the Bahamas, according to Townsend.

"His peers recognized him as a master of the style; three years in a row, from 1927 to 1929, Forster's picturesque French houses won him some of the most prestigious medals in his profession," Townsend wrote.

The home he built for Hatfield features a sharply pitched slate roof, dormer windows and stone chimneys. Inside, there are wide-plank floors, beamed ceilings and wrought-iron accents.

Sitting on two-thirds of an acre, 67 Warren has a heated in-ground pool, an herb garden and a two-car attached garage. The circular driveway is centered on a specimen weeping Japanese maple and connected to a bluestone walkway that leads to the foyer and center hall.

The home has a gourmet eat-in kitchen with two center islands, custom cabinets and composite stone countertops. The family room has a stone-mantled gas fireplace. The primary suite has a wood-burning fireplace as well as two walk-in closets, a balcony overlooking the pool and a bathroom with a walk-in shower and a separate jetted soaking tub. In all, the second floor boasts five bedrooms, each with an en suite bath. The basement is fully finished.
