This collection of HANS performance products includes the HANS Device Helmet Adjustable Series - Professional Series and Sport Series II.

For 2011 the Snell foundation have announced a helmet standard (SAH2010) that allows helmet makers to permanently bond a nut washer inside their helmets. This makes attaching a HANS racing device helmet anchor easier as you simply screw the anchor into the helmet.

As you know from past anchors the point of the post anchor and the tethers of our Quick Click anchors should point rearward after installation. Older helmets with a movable nut washer inside the helmet can orient the HANS device anchor by rotating this inner nut washer.

As this is not possible with the SAH2010 fixed nut washers we have designed a collar system that can be rotated from outside the helmet. These HANS device helmet anchors ship with a small wrench designed to facilitate this feature.

Plenty of thrills in store as Power Boat racers gear up for new season

powerboat racing suit

Janae Nesbitt is looking forward to what promises to be one of the most thrilling powerboat racing seasons in recent memory.

The Bermuda Power Boat Association commodore and her fellow executive committee members have been busy in recent months implementing various initiatives as part of an ambitious mandate to raise the sport’s profile and ensure its sustainability.

Among the new additions this year are three new classes, the reintroduction of the Hamilton Harbour inshore race and a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda.

“As a newly registered charity, this season I am expecting to see the association make strides with the formation of new partnerships with our local sponsors,” Nesbitt told The Royal Gazette .

“We are looking to breathe some fresh air into the association and bring more awareness to who we are as a club and what we can offer to our community in the way of recreational sports.

“We want to grow the sport as much as possible while keeping it accessible for anyone interested in being a part of the culture. The main target is to be better than last year and to take a step towards progress at every event.

“We aim to be more present on all social media platforms, keeping the public updated with what we have going on, so keep an eye on us.”

Nesbitt is particularly thrilled over the new partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda.

“One of the major new additions to the 2023 race season is the partnership with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Bermuda to offer our junior racing programme as an extracurricular activity for their youth programme,” she added.

The junior crown counsel is equally as keen to enhance the association’s youth programme, during her term as commodore with a view to bolstering and sustaining its membership over the long haul.

“The BPBA has been around since the 1950s so there is already a lot of history within the association,” Nesbitt said. “Therefore, whilst I sit in the seat of commodore, my vision would be to continue growing the association.

“I, like many others, believe this starts with our youth. Our goal is to create opportunities for Bermuda’s youth, who will be provided first-class equipment that is current with the rest of the world while also being given the opportunities to learn and hone their maritime skills.

“When it comes to jet ski racing, which falls under the banner of the BPBA, and our senior racing classes, my vision is to see anyone who own jet skis and race boats to come out and put their equipment to the test.”

The 2023 season will run from May 21 until October 22 with members to compete among nine classes.

“There are a total of nine classes with this year seeing the introduction of 3 new classes,” Nesbitt added.

“The AV Class and the BV Class will consist of boats with v-hulls only.

“You won't see any bat boats, cats, etc racing in AV and BV class. Those boats will continue to run in the A-Class and B-Class categories.

“The Bermuda Personal Watercraft Association will also introduce the recreational class allowing for lighter engines to compete on race days in addition to the stock and modified classes already in place.”

Back this year is the Wedco National Championships three-race series to be held at Cross Island, Dockyard, and the prestigious Rubis Around the Island Race.

“We are extremely excited for this upcoming season because I cannot wait to see what our junior racers have in store, since last year we saw a lot of night flying action,” Nesbitt said.

“I also cannot wait to see what new boats come out to race this year, which ones will come back out to compete for the three titles on the line and just the all-around banter that power boat racing brings.

“Boat racing is all about the skill the racers possess and the thrill of the spectators watching them and it comes with an adrenalin rush.

“The experience of inshore racing is the part of racing you don’t want to miss. Whether you're on the shore or in the boat, you're always flying by the seat of your pants. Making the races even for all and exciting to watch is our goal.”

Nesbitt is only the third woman to hold the position of commodore and is the first since Kim McCallan stepped down in 2018.

She ran unopposed for the top post after predecessor Robert Cardwell opted not to seek re-election during the association’s annual general meeting last November.

Since then Nesbitt has made a smooth transition thanks to the support of her fellow colleagues.

“I think I have settled in well to my role as madam commodore,” she added. “Having the experience with the club for numerous years in other capacities has prepared me well.

“However, I also would be remiss to not mention that I wouldn't have had such an easy transition without the team I have rallying behind me.

“We have put in a lot of work to make things happen for this upcoming season and I cannot wait to see our hard work pay off.“

Racing Force Group starts an exciting new chapter as Official Suppliers to Tom Brady’s team in electric powerboat racing

powerboat racing suit

Ronco Scrivia (Genova, Italy), January 18th, 2024 – Racing Force Group is pleased to announce the wide-scale relationship with Team Brady, owned by NFL legend Tom Brady, ready to race from this year in the new UIM E1 World Championship, the first electric powerboat series. Team Brady has chosen to use OMP, Bell Racing and Racing Spirit products, brands of Racing Force Group, for this commitment.

The Team Brady pilots, powerboat world championship winner Sam Coleman and car racing veteran Emma Kimiläinen, will use OMP racewear derived from the brand’s experience in car racing, with a complete kit including fireproof suits, gloves, shoes, and underwear. A key point of the collaboration between Racing Force Group and Team Brady is the long-term development of a suit with specific solutions for powerboat racing, which can further raise the performance, comfort and safety standards required by this motorsport discipline.

Coleman and Kimiläinen will also wear Bell Racing’s MAG-10 Rally open face helmet, already homologated for powerboat racing, equipped with a microphone and speakers for ensuring communication between cockpit and team during competitive action.

Team Brady’s personnel at the race venues will wear Racing Spirit technical clothing, which integrates OMP’s know-how and passion into garments and accessories, such as polos, soft-shell jackets, and backpacks. The E1 World Championship and Team Brady represent an ideal showcase for the brand, which, besides being appreciated in motorsport, has also found popularity in the yachting industry thanks to its technical features.

The 2024 edition of the UIM E1 World Championship will kick off in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with the Jeddah Grand Prix on 2-3 February. Rounds in Venice (Italy), Puerto Banús (Spain), Geneva (Switzerland), Monaco, Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Hong Kong will follow.

Paolo Delprato, Chairman and CEO of Racing Force Group , commented: “We are proud to undertake this new project with Team Brady, that chose our brands OMP, Bell Racing and Racing Spirit to start the adventure in the E1 World Championship. Thanks to this platform, our products will have additional visibility, demonstrating their qualities even in a motorsport discipline and in an environment different from the usual ones, but still with several sporting and technological similarities. We are also aligned on the topic of sustainability, as we already do our part by using recycled materials and relying on renewable energy for our production process. Furthermore, our R&D department will get the opportunity to work on powerboat-specific solutions to be implemented in the future, counting on feedback from Team Brady and its pilots.”

Ben King, Co Team Principal of Team Brady , added: “We are delighted to be working with Racing Force Group and their iconic brands of OMP, Bell Racing and Racing Spirit. From their decades of supplying the highest quality equipment to some of the most successful teams and drivers in top-level motorsports, Racing Force Group perfectly embodies the no-stone-unturned approach of our Team and legendary owner, Tom Brady. Team Brady is just as much about driving sustainable innovation as it is about winning, so we look forward to co-developing cutting edge racewear solutions to maximise pilot performance and safety whilst reducing our impact on the environment.”

Idaho Citizens Victorious in Lawsuit Over City of Moscow's Unconstitutional Treatment

powerboat racing suit

Three Idaho church members have triumphed over the City of Moscow, Idaho, after suing the city and its officials for their unlawful arrest in September 2020. Thomas More Society attorneys filed suit for the Christ Church trio who were arrested almost two and a half years ago during a “Psalm Sing” outside the Moscow City Hall. In an order dated February 1, 2023, Senior United States District Judge Morrison C. England, Jr., denied the city’s Motion for Summary Judgement and sent the case for settlement. The City of Moscow had suggested that the case be decided in its favor, but the federal judge disagreed.

Thomas More Society Special Counsel Erick Kaardal explained that Gabriel Rench, and Sean and Rachel Bohnet were arrested under a COVID-19 mask mandate issued by Moscow Mayor Bill Lambert. The three were not wearing masks, and because there were more than 200 protestors in attendance, were unable to socially distance. However, the ordinance that they were arrested and prosecuted under had an exception for First Amendment activities.

“Mr. Rench and the Bohnets were arrested even though law enforcement officers were aware of the First Amendment protections under the mayor’s emergency order,” stated Kaardal. “The city violated its own ordinance when law enforcement wrongly arrested Gabriel Rench and Sean and Rachel Bohnet. Those arresting officers demonstrated reckless indifference to these citizens’ First Amendment rights. It appears that the city’s law enforcement department was ‘weaponized’ to go after critics of the city government.”

Moscow officials claimed that the ordinance under which Rench and the others were arrested was ambiguous.

In response, Judge England wrote: “That is simply incorrect. The City’s Code could not be more clear: Under a plain reading of the Order in conjunction with the Ordinance, all expressive activity was excluded from the mask or distance mandate because such [as in this case] conduct was not explicitly addressed in the Order itself. In other words, during the relevant time period, those participating in expressive or associative conduct were not required to mask or distance. Plaintiffs should never have been arrested in the first place, and the Constitutionality of what the City thought its Code said is irrelevant.”

Apparently, the Moscow prosecuting attorney was of the same mind, having moved to dismiss the arrest charges against Rench and the Bohnets. He told the court, several months after the arrests, that, while city codes allow the mayor to issue public health emergency orders, exemptions, unless specifically prohibited, include “any and all expressive and associative activity protected by the U.S. and Idaho constitutions, including speech, press, assembly, and/or religious activity.”

Read the Memorandum and Order issued February 1, 2023, in Gabriel Rench, Sean Bohnet and Rachel Bohnet v. The City of Moscow, Idaho, et al., by Senior United States District Judge Morrison C. England, Jr. of the United States District Court for the District of Idaho here .

7 Of The Best Bespoke Tailors In The World

So I’ve been telling you a lot about suits lately. And I’ve been doing this because a well-dressed man is surely to impress his friends, co-workers and other business associates, and, why not, his girlfriend or wife.

However, there’s nothing that makes a bigger impact than a bespoke suit. And for that, you want to go to the best, or at least, to one of the best bespoke tailors in the world.

What’s “bespoke” you ask? Well, it’s actually a fancier word for “tailored”.

What does “tailored” mean? It means that you go to one of the following tailors, or well, other less-known tailors with good references , and you get your suit personalized and custom made specifically for your size and dimensions .

We’re talking about that perfect jacket shoulder width, that perfect length of the dress pants and of course, the exact length of the jacket’s sleeve so that it leaves the shirt cuffs visible just as much as needed.

Here are some of the best bespoke tailor in the world!

Ozwald-Boateng-tailor-bespoke

Ozwald Boateng

One of the most iconic tailors from around the world, Ozwald Boateng now has a tailor house on London’s famous Savile Row. Working only with the best young tailors the world has to offer, Boateng designs a unique suit for each of his customers and guarantees perfection in handcrafting. Some of his customers include Mick Jagger, Keanu Reeves, and Jamie Foxx.

J. H. Cutler-bespoke-tailor

J. H. Cutler

Halfway around the world from London, we have one of Australia’s best bespoke tailors, John Cutler . A tailoring house with almost 130 years of history, J. H. Cutler offers more than just bespoke suits. I’m talking about suits, blazers, dress shirts and even overcoats. Customer satisfaction? Ask some of the world’s prime ministers and dignitaries.

Raja-Fashions-bespoke-tailor

Raja Fashions

With over 50 years of bespoke tailoring experience, the tailors from Raja Fashions are the best Hong Kong has to offer, and even some of the best bespoke tailors in the world. With over 20,000 fabrics to choose from, I’d say that if you’re ever in the area, or just want an extraordinary suit, Raja Fashions is where you should be. Their customers include members of the House of Lords (the upper house of the United Kingdom Parliament). However, keep in mind that you may have to book an appointment more than 3 months in advance. There’s a reason “raja” means “king” in Hindi.

William-Fioravanti-bespoke-tailor

William Fioravanti

The best of what the United States has to offer. William Fioravanti is a bespoke tailor from an Italian heritage. He’s been making suits for Frank Sinatra & Steve Wynn, and even several Nobel Price winners. Domenico-Caraceni-bespoke-tailor

A. Caraceni

Established in 1930, by Domenico Caraceni , today Caraceni is considered to be the absolute best of Italian bespoke tailors. With customers from all around the world, the Caraceni tailors are sill humble, owning multiple shops, the best one being in Milan. If you didn’t know yet, Caraceni tailors are known for inventing the pagoda shoulder (seen in James Bond movies). Their craftsmen tailor shorter-than-usual suit jackets, made to be worn in the office, mostly using English natural fabrics.

The Imperial Tailoring Co.

The Imperial Tailoring Co.

The Imperial Tailoring Co. was founded almost 20 years ago by Sammy Kotwani , an Indian-born, England-schooled tailor. Now, his tailoring house is considered to be the biggest and the best of what Eastern Europe has to offer. And what an offer! Using only the best European fabrics, Sammy and his brothers – all exquisite tailors in the firm, have created unique suits for presidents, prime ministers, and artists alike. If you’re ever in Eastern Europe and you want a custom suit, Moscow is the place to be.

Gieves-Hawkes-bespoke-tailors

Gieves & Hawkes

I know I’ve already mentioned a bespoke tailor from London, but I haven’t mentioned the best in the world. Currently, considered by many in the industry, Gieves & Hawkes are the best bespoke tailoring house in the world. With over 240 years of combined experience, Gieves & Hawkes is associated to the British Royal Family, the Royal Navy, and the British Army. Furthermore, Gieves & Hawkes have excellent references, receiving all three current Royal Warrants.

Some of their most notable customers were historic figures such as King George the 3rd , the Duke of Cambridge , Winston Churchill , and Princess Diana . Of course, the list continues with iconic figures such as Charlie Chaplin, Sean Connery, and David Beckham. They offer thousands of fabrics, from the traditional Irish linen, to the feather-light Italian worsteds. All of their bespoke suits are completely handcrafted from scratch to finish.

These 7 are only a few of the best bespoke tailor in the world, but I assure you that there are many more extraordinary ones around the world even if they are not as famous. My advice for you is: If you find a tailor that creates a suit that fits you like a charm, stay close to him . Remember, your bespoke suit is only as good as your tailor .

Top 10 powerboat racing icons that helped make boating what it is today

  • Top stories

Hugo Peel explores the top ten power-boating events, people and inventions that have influenced today’s sportsboats...

Powerboat racing may seem a world away from the type of cruising most of us do but the sportsboats we enjoy today wouldn’t be half as good as they are without the racers, designers and builders whose heroic efforts helped shape them.

Auto-boat racing, as it was originally known, traces its history back to the late 19th century and for a brief period was even an Olympic sport, with races staged off the Isle of Wight in 1908. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s and 1970s that the sport exploded in popularity as developments in engineering, materials, speed, safety and propulsion really took off.

Racing was the anvil on which these promising technologies were forged. So what are the ten most significant events, inventions and people that have contributed to today’s impressive levels of performance, safety and utility?

While many of these names and events may be unfamiliar now, they are the stuff of legend to all who recall the glory days of British powerboat racing.

1. The Cowes-Torquay-Cowes offshore powerboat race

Many people regard offshore powerboat racing as the ultimate challenge for craft and crew. Arguably the most challenging race of all and certainly one of the oldest is the legendary Cowes-Torquay competition.

Initiated in 1961 by Daily Express newspaper magnate and keen yachtsman, Sir Max Aitken, who foresaw it would help grow the UK marine industry, it bred a string of British and international heroes and brands. This 200-mile race, now known as the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes, and its coveted Harmsworth Trophy, intermittently awarded since 1903, is still the one all top powerboat racers yearn to win.

2. The marathon Round Britain Powerboat Race

If a 200-mile race sounds challenging, the 1,500-mile endurance marathon that is the Round Britain Race is on an altogether different scale, yet it proved so appealing that it has been run three times over four decades.

The first BP-sponsored race in 1969 comprised ten stages over 1,459 miles and was won by Timo Mäkinen, a champion Finnish rally-driver in Avenger Too propelled by triple Mercury outboards – he averaged 37mph.

The 1984 race was sponsored by Everest double glazing and attracted famous names, including Italian racer/designer Fabio Buzzi driving White Iveco , a single-step GRP monohull with four 600bhp Iveco diesels. Against him was fellow Italian Renato della Valle in Ego Lamborghini , an aluminium-hull craft powered by two ear-splitting 800hp, race-tuned V12 Lamborghinis.

Article continues below…

Victory went to Buzzi who, after the 157-mile Dundee-Whitby leg, during which White Iveco averaged a staggering 69 knots, dismissed it with shrug saying: ‘In Italy, this is just a cruising boat.’

The race was revived in 2008 attracting a field of 47 raceboats old and new, including a number of production RIBs and sportsboats from companies like Scorpion , Goldfish and Scanner. The favourites included Fabio Buzzi again in his classic four-engined Red FPT , and Austrian casino millionaire Hannes Bohinc in another Buzzi-designed monohull Wettpunkt .

This time the overall winner was a Greek entry Blue FPT navigated by Britain’s Dag Pike, who at 75 years old, was the event’s oldest competitor. Many of the production boats also did remarkably well, showing just how far they have come in recent years.

powerboat-racing-icons-steve-curtis

Steve Curtis MBE is powerboat racing royalty

3. Powerboat racer Steve Curtis

If the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes is the benchmark, surely the top driver must be found among its winners? Home-grown contenders must include Tommy Sopwith, a winner in 1961, 1968 and 1970 and the Gardner brothers, Charles and Jimmy, who clocked up victories in 1964 with their Bertram 31 Surfrider , and again in 1967 in the iconic Sonny Levi-designed Surfury .

On the worldwide stage, Italy’s Renato Della Valle won four Cowes Torquay Cowes races in a row from 1982 to 1985. Hannes Bohinc collected the trophies in 1995 and 2003 and another German, Markus Hendricks, whose boat sank on the 2008 Round Britain, took a re-engined 34-year-old monohull, Cinzano , to victory in 2009 and 2011.

They are all brilliant in their way but how could this category ignore the UK’s Steve Curtis MBE, owner of Cougar Marine, with no fewer than eight Class One powerboat racing world championships in fearsome 175mph catamarans? Curtis’s 2016 victory in the roughest ever Cowes Torquay Cowes race, in a 30-year-old aluminium boat sealed his place in the history books.

powerboat-racing-icons-Lady-Violet-Aitken

4. Lady Violet Aitken – the first lady of fast

The field of legendary female powerboat racers may be smaller but is no less worthy for it with three principal candidates – two titled British ladies and an American grandmother.

From the USA, Betty Cook – focussed, smart, and tough – arrived with her 36ft Cigarette Kaama and blew away the opposition in the 1978 Cowes Torquay Cowes race. She went on to secure two world championships.

The British aristocracy provides the eccentric and brave Countess of Arran, who fielded fast if unconventional designs of three-pointers like Highland Fling among others. She was described by The Guardian in her obituary as ‘beautiful, vivacious, funny, fun and entrancing’.

But our top female driver is Lady Violet Aitken, wife of Cowes-Torquay founder Sir Max Aitken and Ladies’ Trophy winner on several occasions. Racing is still in the blood as her daughter Laura and granddaughter Lucci are both keen powerboat racers.

powerboat-racing-icons-fabio-buzzi

Buzzi’s legendary status stems from 40 years of work in the marine industry

5. Powerboat designer Fabio Buzzi

The late Fabio Buzzi is a legend, both behind the helm and at the drawing board. In more than 40 years of activity, his company FB Design has won a staggering 52 world championships; seven Harmsworth Trophies; two Round Britains; and set no less than 56 world speed records in both European and American classes.

Buzzi designed the boat that has won more races than any other powerboat in history, the quadruple-engined, be-winged 44ft Cesa/Gancia dei Gancia . Today, the descendants of these monohull designs are found in service with government and military agencies all around the world, as well as leisure craft like the Sunseeker XS2000 and Hawk 38 .

But the competition is hard-fought. Sonny Levi’s delta-shaped race-boats A’Speranziella , Merry-go-Round , Alto Volante , and Surfury leave lasting memories by their sheer performance and poise. And their legacy, the Levi Corsair, is still made today.

The UK’s Don Shead also runs Buzzi close having designed ten Cowes-Torquay winners and the 1984 Round Britain race winner. The early Sunseeker ranges also came from his drawing board.

Peter Thornycroft and Alan Burnard merit attention as designers of the iconic Nelson and Fairey hulls respectively, many of which are still in service today. But the sheer scale of Fabio’s achievements trumps them all.

powerboat-racing-icons-mercury-v8

The Mercury V8 took powerboating to another level

6. The Mercury V8 engine

Early racers only had American petrol V8s for choice, mainly Ford Dearborn Interceptors, tweaked to deliver big torque and 300-400bhp. There were also a few marinised Jaguar straight-six engines, which consumed oil at a terrifying rate and were fragile. Then Carl Kiekhaefer, head of US outboard giant Mercury, refined numerous Mercury Racing V8s and Lamborghini V12s providing up to 850bhp and things took off. Literally.

To this market came car racing engineers Ilmor in the 1990s with a tuned Dodge Viper V10 engine, pushing out a reliable 700-800bhp. The Italians, at the behest of Fabio Buzzi, developed the 16-litre 1,000hp Seatek diesel for ultra-marathon events, providing unparalleled torque with (relatively) light weight and reliability.

A special mention for the maddest motors must go to Tommy Sopwith, who put a pair of helicopter turbines into a 44ft Don Shead hull delivering over 1500bhp and Domenico Achilli, who ‘glued’ two Subaru flat-four rally car engines together, and split our eardrums while winning the 1990 Cowes Torquay Cowes race.

But for sheer consistency and the countless number of ever-faster, smoother, more reliable production engines its powerboat racing successes have spawned, Mercury and its big displacement V8s have to take the crown.

powerboat-racing-icons-sterndrive-unit

Offering horizontal thrust and reduced drag, the sterndrive greatly increased the speed and efficiency of both race and pleasure craft

7. The sterndrive unit

Early shaft-driven race-boats normally placed engines amidships with straight shafts to the propellers. Then the vee-drive option enabled engines to be moved astern for better weight distribution but, in both cases, the angle of thrust was still pushing the hull ‘uphill’.

With the arrival of the sterndrive came horizontal thrust to harness the growing power of engines, and hugely reduced hydrodynamic drag by doing away with separate rudders, shafts and P-brackets. This greatly increased both speed and efficiency while the ability to trim the angle of thrust also enabled drivers to adjust the boat’s trim to suit differing sea conditions.

Surface-drives from Arneson and Trimax reduced drag even further but at the cost of low speed manoeuvrability and we mustn’t overlook the impact of the outboard engine on both race and leisure sportsboats.

However, for sheer versatility, the impact it has had on both powerboat racing and leisure craft, and its ability to work equally well with both petrol and diesel engines, the sterndrive has to take it.

powerboat-racing-icons-ray-hunt

Hunt’s deep-vee design proved a powerboat game-changer

8. Racing hull designer Ray Hunt

The most successful hull builders embraced the fast-developing world of engineering and materials as well as developments in design. Cold-molded mahogany plywood gave way to GRP, which in turn surrendered to carbon-fibre reinforced by Kevlar.

However, it’s hard to think of a bigger leap in hull design than Ray Hunt’s deep-vee concept, demonstrating an immediate and staggering superiority over previous hard and rounded chines. Nothing underpins this assertion better than Dick Bertram’s 1961 Miami-Nassau victory in his prototype Moppie – finishing a whole day ahead of the third-placed boat.

The likes of Levi, Shead and Bertram all helped refine the concept but the winner has to be Ray Hunt who, along with Dick Bertram’s investment and encouragement, became the grandfather of today’s sportsboats.

powerboat-racing-icons-peter-dredge-vector-martini-credit-alamy

Peter Dredge skims Vector Martini to an average speed of 94.5mph during the 2015 Cowes Torquay Cowes race. Photo: Alamy

9. Speed record breaker Peter Dredge

World Water Speed records set by the likes of Donald Campbell’s Bluebird and Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic Challenger II are momentous achievements in their fields but their designs have bred few, if any, current sportsboats. Offshore powerboat racing records may not be as well publicised but are arguably far more relevant.

The average speed records of historic races like the Cowes Torquay Cowes race are a perfect demonstration of the improvements made in powertrains, hull design and strength. The first race in 1961 was won by a 24ft wooden Christina averaging 24.5mph. It took another two years to break 40mph, and a further four to exceed 50mph. In 1969 the record tumbled again with an average speed of over 60mph.

A gap of six years then ensued before the record climbed over 70mph and a further 13 years for technology to reach an average exceeding 80mph. A very calm race in 1990 saw the Italians hit over 90mph average – and then we waited 25 years before that speed was finally exceeded in 2015.

So until that record is beaten, preferably with a speed of more than 100mph, our winner is the current record holder Peter Dredge who propelled the awesome 1,500bhp, 44ft Vector Martini to victory at a remarkable average speed of 94.5mph.

powerboat-racing-icons-dag-pike

Dag Pike, the brains behind so many great powerboat victories

10. National treasure Dag Pike

No top ten list could be complete without mention of those quiet but significant contributors to the sport of offshore powerboat racing. Among those names must be Class-3 racer, commentator, sport historian and MBY ’s longest-serving contributor Ray Bulman, who passed away last year .

The racer, organiser, enthusiast and flamboyant, chain-smoking Tim Powell also has to be in the running. Other characters like Commander Petroni of Italy’s Tornado Racing Team and Tommy Sopwith’s regular crew Charles de Selincourt, who guided him to victory in several Cowes Torquay Cowes races also deserve mentions.

But my National Treasure award goes to Dag Pike; writer, raconteur and navigator extraordinaire who has been the brains behind countless race wins for dozens of different drivers. Having been shipwrecked eight times himself but also having rescued more than eight people in his long career offshore, he has in his own words ‘balanced the books’.

The last word

As with any top ten list it can never be comprehensive and will always be open to differences of opinion but that’s not the point of this article. We simply invite you to ponder that, whatever boat you drive and whatever propels it, its performance and seaworthiness possesses at least some of the DNA of the many great raceboats, designers, engineers and technologies, forged in the heat of offshore battle.

Marussia f1 team return to russia for moscow city racing, andy webb, marussia ceo: we have seen the strength of that support again in the last few days following the very pleasing announcement of our new powertrain partnership with scuderia ferrari..

Despite the three-week gap between Rounds 9 and 10 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship® the Marussia F1 Team has had little time to draw breath, embarking on a series of promotional events to reward the loyal support of its fans.

This week, while the race team conduct the Young Driver Test at Silverstone, the demonstration team are heading ‘home’ to Russia for their second year of participation in ‘Moscow City Racing’.

The event takes place on 20 and 21 July, with the demonstration runs scheduled for Sunday 21 July on the streets surrounding the Kremlin and the ‘paddock’ located close to Red Square.

Visitors will also be given the opportunity to enter the inner-sanctum - the Paddock - to soak up the atmosphere and see for themselves the intricacies of Formula 1 design and engineering.

Aside from his on-track duties, Max will participate in a range of promotional activities, taking time out to mingle with the Russian fans during autograph sessions and photo opportunities.

Supporting the Marussia F1 Team over the weekend are main event partner Liga Stavok along with additional partners Instaforex, QNet and RBC.

Max Chilton: “There have been quite a few ‘firsts’ for me in my debut season in Formula One - new racetracks, new cities, meeting new fans - and Moscow City Racing will be my very first visit to Russia. I can’t wait. From what I hear from previous events, the demonstration runs are a fantastic spectacle and the crowd is huge and very supportive.

That’s nice, because we are the only Anglo-Russian team and it is good to keep building on their love of Formula 1 before Russia gets its very own race next year in Sochi. I’m really excited about making the trip and I hope to meet as many of the Russian fans as possible, when I’m not driving through their streets!”

Andy Webb, CEO: “The Marussia F1 Team are very excited to be returning to Russia to participate in the Moscow City Racing event for a second successive year. As the only Anglo-Russian team in Formula One, this event has become a very important date in our Team calendar, as we continue our determined efforts to bring more of F1 to Russia and more of Russia to F1.

This is our opportunity to get closer to the fans and for them to see our car and drivers right on their doorstep, not just on the TV. Our drivers Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton are enjoying a flying start to their exciting debut seasons and the Marussia F1 Team really is going from strength to strength now, making good progress towards its long-term ambitions.

We look forward to a fantastic crowd in Moscow and to expressing our thanks for all the incredible support we receive ‘back home’ in Russia. We have seen the strength of that support again in the last few days following the very pleasing announcement of our new powertrain partnership with Scuderia Ferrari. It seems the fans share our optimism for the future of the Marussia F1 Team.”
