Burano Lace Industry

Guests are invited to join for a 30 minute demonstration of lace-making as part of our series Destination Discoveries, A Concierge-Curated Experience. The lace industry on the island of Burano can be traced back to the 1500s. Burano lace is widely considered to be the first true lace, and while modern machinery does this job today, traditional processes still flourish on the island. One of the few lace-makers left in the country is offering a live demonstration for our guests.

Making the Forcola

Guests are invited to join a 30 minute demonstration of the making of a fórcola as part of our series Destination Discoveries, A Concierge-Curated Experience. The fórcola (oarlock) is an essential part of the gondola. In addition to satisfying the practical requirements of Venetian rowing, the fórcola is recognised as an objet d'art for the beauty of its fluid, curving forms. One of the few remaining fórcola Masters is offering a live demonstration workshop for our guests.

Palazzo Rubelli

Along the Grand Canal, just like the Gritti, the Rubelli historical archives offer a different location. Discover 16th century fabrics, which are present today in our rooms and suites of the hotel.

Various tours—individual, group, walking, boat, guided—may be organised through the hotel concierge. English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Japanese tour guides are available upon request.

Helicopter tours of Venice, the lagoon and nearby islands may be organised as well. Tours last from 5 to 25 minutes and depart daily at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, and 6pm. Advance reservation is required. Charges apply. Special rates are available for families and groups.

Hidden between the ruins of a XVII century Austrian fortress, the Mediterranean woodland and the Malamocco channel, the Venice Golf Club is home to an 18-hole international golf course, one of the first in Italy, located at the Alberoni, on the far south end of the Lido island. Centuries-old trees sprout all over this world-famous golf course, which reaches the seashore.

Inaugurated in 1930, the original nine-hole course was projected by the Scottish architect Cruickshank of Maxwell M. Hart of Glasgow and built on recovered sea land, proving to be a true sea-link. In 1950 the course was enlarged to 18 holes to a project by the architect C.K. Cotton.

Over the years the course characteristics have slowly changed with the growth of many trees; the rolling fairways have however remained, as have the deep bunkers and the grass roughs. Of the original sea-link, the splendid sandy foundation has survived rendering the course practicable and verdant year round.

The course requires a great deal of precision due to its difficult technical characteristics but guarantees even the less expert golfer an enormous amount of satisfaction. The course record belongs to Arnold Palmer.

We made prior arrangements through the hotel for our arrival. When we missed a connecting flight coming in, we contacted the hotel and adjusted the arrangements directly with the hotel's concierge. Of course the new connecting flight was delayed and then delayed some more. Nonetheless, the Blitz representative was waiting for us right as we came down the elevator in the airport. He was efficient, handled all our luggage, took us directly to the SUV that was waiting for us, whisked us to the dock and helped us get on the boat with our captain. The captain coordinated our arrival with the hotel and even though we were arriving at close to midnight, the transport operated quite smoothly. It ran so efficiently, we decided it would just be easier to Blitz back to the airport upon our departure. Both times, we traveled in elegant polished wood boats. We were offered water on both legs of the trip and didn't have to worry about where and how to go. Their representative met us at baggage claim. (Our flight was 15 minutes late and we were worried that they had left, but no, they were still waiting on us.) Our guide escorted us to the car and then drove us to the airport pier. At the pier, the most beautiful water taxi sat waiting on us. We boarded and off we went for our 40 minute ride to Hotel Danieli. It was amazing. We did not have to deal with our baggage or stumbling around to find how to get to our hotel. It was a little pricey, but worth every penny paid. If I ever have the opportunity to travel to Venice again, I will definitely hire Blitz Executive again. Professional and good at what they do! If I am ever fortunate to go to Venice again, I would not trust anyone but Blitz Executive to transfer me to the city. They cost a little more, but you get what you pay for! So I did lately, when the famous Gritti Palace (A Luxury Collection Hotel owned by Starwood) and Riva Boats invited me to celebrate their exclusive partnership…

The moment you get off the airport and into one of these beautiful wooden boat limousines/taxis, is the moment where the magic begins… Arrived in Venice, the boat was already waiting for me at the airport, to take the stunning ride towards Canal Grande , where the historical Gritti Palace hotel is located and where I was welcomed in real Venetian style: with an original (and the best) Bellini of Venice by an amazing team.

The Gritti Palace , a Luxury Collection Hotel, was built in 1475 and has ever since been the home of royal families and major personalities before it became a hotel in 1947. It is one of the most historical and unique palazzos in Venice, that has recently been refurbished for more than 35 million Euros and re-opened with a lot of highlights, more than 60 extraordinary rooms and 21 unique and historical suites, the best service you can imagine, delicious restaurants and the rooftop terrace with stunning 360 degree views over Venice.

In honor of the new partnership between Riva Yachts  and The Gritti Palace , the hotel has transformed its Terrace to a Riva Lounge overlooking the Grand Canal of Venice ,  inspired by the original Riva Lounge at Monaco Yacht Club.

On this occasion The Gritti Palace and Riva Yachts have created a special package for their guests: The Riva Experience ! First 50m Riva superyacht Race premieres in Venice

Riva's first 50 metre superyacht  Race , the flagship of the Riva range, has had its official premiere in Venice.

The yacht was unveiled at an exclusive and theatrical event at the historic Arsenale of Venice. Speaking at the event, Ferretti Group chief executive, Alberto Galassi, said: "The largest Riva, the dream of Carlo Riva that came true, a boat of immense beauty, could only make its debut at the Arsenale, which has been for centuries the largest naval factory in the world."

It comes after the yacht hit the water for the first time at Riva's Ancona based shipyard in March. Race  is set to appear at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.

Speaking at the launch, Ferretti Group chief executive Alberto Galassi described Race as "a huge leap forward for Riva and the world of yachting."

He added: "This yacht and her unique magnificence, amplified by her impressive size, also represents a remarkable achievement for the Riva Superyachts Division, which has built the biggest Riva ever made while meeting and enhancing the brand’s signature stylistic excellence."

Developed in collaboration with  Officina Italian Design , the Riva Superyacht series will eventually stretch up to 90 metres.

The four-deck Riva 50 Metri features accommodation for 12 guests in five cabins, including a main deck master suite. Other key features include a Jacuzzi on the sundeck, a stern garage with enough room to house a Williams Dieseljet 625 tender and a foredeck storage area suitable for a pair of Jet Skis. In an innovative move, the galley is situated on the lower deck, with a central dumb waiter allowing for discreet service to all four decks.

The Riva 50 Metri is reminiscent of classic Carlo Riva motor yachts, inspired by the Carvelle line from the 1960s and 70s. Riva is well known for its  classic launches  but it's lesser known that between 1960-70 Carlo Riva created four superyacht ranges called Carvelle, Marco Polo, Vespucci and Atlantic.

Mauro Micheli, co-founder of Officina Italian Design, previously said: “The first line will clearly draw inspiration from the yachts created by Carlo Riva in the early 1970s; the second will feature an unusual design, with stylistic features that will clearly convey Riva’s unmistakable style, together with a strong, distinctive character."

The Riva 50 Metri has been built from a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and will be offered as a semi-custom yacht, with an interior design created to the owner’s choice, something not seen on smaller Rivas previously. “Not only [does the Riva Superyacht Division] represent an extraordinary leap into the future, but also Riva will once more be able to meet the refined and sophisticated taste of its very demanding owners,” Galassi previously said.

Race's launch comes after Riva launched its first true superyacht and flagship, the 37 metre 122 Mythos named Sol , in 2014.

Starting from Venice, we will visit central parts of the Lagoon, such as the Giudecca, St. Mark’s Basin and San Giorgio Island. The excursion will bring us as far as Poveglia Island to the south and to the local vacationing island, Vignole, to the north.

This excursion starts from Venice and takes us through St. Mark’s Basin to the Arsenale, and on to Murano, where a private visit of the best glass factor is crowned with a demonstration by master glass blowers. Which Marriott Bonvoy hotel is the best in Venice, Italy? Which is best in downtown and at Venice airport? We have already reviewed the hotel with the best club lounges in Venice , now we look at the best Marriott Bonvoy hotels in Venice.

Ritz-Carlton hotels are often some of the best Marriott Bonvoy hotels in an area. They also tend to offer the best club lounges in most cities. Interestingly, you can get a bunch of free benefits at the Ritz if you book it via our luxury travel concierge . There’s no Ritz-Carlton in Venice, but there is a St Regis, two exquisite Luxury Collection Marriott Bonvoy hotels in Venice, and an excellent JW Marriott. We offer free benefits at all of these hotels. W Hotel is missing, but there are mid-range brands like their Autograph Collection, no Renaissance, no Sheraton, but there is a Four Points. There’s also no Le Meridien or Westin hotel in Venice.

1. The St. Regis Venice

With an Avant-garde design, The St. Regis Venice merges striking, modern interiors with its historic provenance as the best address in the city. Flanked by the Grand Canal with views across iconic landmarks, the hotel has stood in this privileged position for over a century and a half.

If you want a modern and classy hotel with fantastic terraces, this is an excellent Marriott. If you are after a property oozing history, you will do better choosing the Gritti Palace, and if you want your own private pool, pick the JW Marriott Venice.

The hotel is right in the center, within walking distance from pretty much everything, and just five minutes walk from St. Mark’s Square via alleyways full of luxury boutiques. It has 129 guestrooms, 40 suites (some with a terrace), a garden terrace overlooking the canal, and a fitness center.

If you are paying (as opposed to redeeming points), the price is upwards of €700 EUR per night or around 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. If you have any suite-upgrade certificates from your Bonvoy Ambassador elite status, this is the place to use them. You can upgrade to a Grand Terrace suite, which is really something. You get a private terrace with views of the Santa Maria Della Salute Basilica.

The communal areas in this newly launched hotel feel more modern than Venetian. The Italianate garden provides access to a range of dining and beverage options at Gio’s restaurant, St. Regis Bar, and Arts Bar.

2. JW Marriott Venice

JW Marriott Venice is another one of the best Marriott Bonvoy hotels in Venice. If you book this as a redemption, it is cheaper than St Regis or the other ultra-lux options, and it hits the spot in terms of luxury. The JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa, which is on its own private island, costs 50,000 Bonvoy points per night to stay at as it is a Rewards Category 6 hotel and is one of the cheapest luxury Marriott Bonvoy hotels in Venice.

The problem is that although the hotel is fantastic, with beautiful rooms, a fantastic rooftop pool, and another pool flanked with loungers, numerous bars, restaurants, and beautiful extensive grounds (and some rooms with their own private plunge pool), the hotel is a 15-minute private JW Marriott (free) boat trip away from the center (+ wait time & loading time), which is a pain if you want to go out in the evening or have a leisurely drink at a bar in a different hotel. You are somewhat marooned on this beautiful island.

JW Marriott is the exclusive inhabitant of the small Venetian island of Isola Delle Rosa, one of the largest islands in the Venetian lagoon and the youngest. It was artificially created in 1870 with materials from the construction of the Santa Marta commercial port. This lush green island easily houses the best Marriott I have ever stayed in. The main building sits in the center of the island and is home to most of the rooms and the rooftop bar and pool.

Outside, the entire island is yours to explore. Take a wander along meandering paths past groves of olive trees and fields of poppies, and you’ll reach outbuildings, which include some of the higher-end rooms with their own private pools. Continue to a church, herb garden, family pool, the Dopolavro Dining room, and the Gardino Grill, all set in a pretty garden. The Spa at the JW Marriott Venice is also immense and offers the same superb views across the water.

The rooftop infinity pool just beyond a rooftop bar and restaurant area ticks all the boxes. Just look at the view in the photo above! Gobsmackingly good views can be enjoyed from comfy seating on a beautifully decked terrace. Music plays in the background, and there are plenty of daybeds and loungers. Dip your foot in, and the pool is as warm as a slipper, perfect for lounging in the bubbles at the edge. Perfect, except for the fact it is incredibly shallow. There’s another outdoor “family” pool hidden away in the greenery of the island, which is a bit of a trek in your dressing gown but offers the option of swimming, as the pool is deeper, along with some more extremely comfy loungers and just across from a young kids playpark.

This resort is so idyllic, peaceful, and relaxing that you won’t want to leave. The craziness of St. Marks Square, Gondolas, and tourists seem a world away. If you do get bored, the hotel’s extremely regular and comfortable shuttle boat whizzes you right onto St Marks Square.

3. The Gritti Palace, A Luxury Collection, Venice

Overlooking the Grand Canal in the heart of Venice, The Gritti Palace boasts one of the most enthralling views of the lagoon city – from the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore past landmarks Punta Della Dogana and Santa Maria Della Salute Basilica to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

This hotel is a Marriott Bonvoy Rewards Category 8 property costing 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night, the same as St Regis above. The Gritti Palace tends to be the most expensive Marriott Bonvoy hotel in Venice, with prices starting at around €1,000 EUR / night. This means this hotel makes a great redemption if you can find the availability.

Dating to 1475, this noble palace and luxury hotel is a place of exceptional art and elegance that has retained its reassuringly intimate and familiar feel of a private residence. A historical treasure where heritage and culture blend with renewed Venetian style, The Gritti Palace is a refined version of its iconic self. It offers attentive service, a delectable culinary experience, and new avenues for relaxation and pleasure.

From the artistic design of its signature suites and iconic terraces to the Gritti Epicurean School, Riva Yacht experiences, and Riva Lounge and the Gritti Spa branded by Sisely Paris, The Gritti Palace is where multiple generations of elite global influencers gather to explore, taste and celebrate.

4. Hotel Danieli, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice

With its heritage setting on Riva Degli Schiavoni, Hotel Danieli dominates the Venetian lagoon with spectacular views of the Grand Canal and islands. Also overlooking the Palazzo Ducale, the hotel is just steps away from Ponte Dei Sospiri and Piazza San Marco.

The three palaces that comprise the hotel date from the 14th, 17th, and 19th Centuries: Palazzo Dandolo in Venetian Gothic style, once home to the noble Dandolo family; Palazzo Casa Nuova, previously the city’s treasury; and Palazzo Danieli Excelsior, features guestrooms with balconies overlooking the lagoon on its upper floors.

The three palaces house a rich collection of precious art and antiques that play witness to the city’s history, blended with contemporary comforts to meet the needs of cultured global travelers. Essential to the Danieli experience is its Restaurant Terrazza Danieli and cuisine concept, a magical voyage for the senses that retraces the oriental influences of spice traders and blends them with ingredients from the lagoon.

5. AC Hotel Venezia

AC Hotel Venezia is Rewards Category 5 hotel so is a cheap redemption and a really nice hotel, but its location is bad. The brand new AC Hotel Venezia is strategically located at the “entrance” of Venice. It is located close to Piazzale Roma, the final bus and car terminal, two minutes walking from Santa Lucia Railway Station and the Waterbus stop, and only 20-minute ride from the Venice Marco Polo Airport.

This modern design hotel, combined with Venetian style details. Seventy-nine rooms, among which 3 Junior Suites and 14 Superior Canal View rooms, equipped with every comfort: a cozy AC Lounge where you can chill out after a day spent discovering the city with the world-famous Venetian aperitif, or the Spritz, where you can enjoy one of our specialties. The problem is that this hotel is not in the touristy and pretty part of Venice. It’s on the edge, meaning you have a trek (well, waterbus ride) to get to where you want to be. You can easily reach Rialto Bridge, St. Mark Square, and all the exciting places you want to visit, but you are not on top of the action. However, this is one of your cheapest options in Venice.

6. Courtyard by Marriott Venice Airport

Ideally located 900 meters from Venice Marco Polo Airport and 20 minutes from Venice, which can be reached by water bus or taxi, is Courtyard by Marriott Venice Airport. It is an excellent choice for those arriving or departing from the VCE Airport terminal, particularly for early and late flights. If you decide to stay here, you will not feel like you are in Venice as it is in a more industrial area and lacks any cutesy alleyways or old sinking, historic buildings.

That said, it’s cheap, and all rooms are equipped with air conditioning and in-room safe. Wi-Fi internet connection is available in public areas of the hotel free of charge. Hot Buffet Breakfast is served every morning. Renewed Gym room is available 24/7. Private transportation to Venice Cruise Ship Terminal is available upon request for a fee if you are connecting to a cruise. Public bus stop right in front of the hotel, direct from/to Marco Polo Airport or downtown Venice – bus #5 – every 15 minutes.

7. Four Points Venice Mestre

The very cheapest Marriott Bonvoy hotel in Venice (and this is not the best) is the Rewards Category 3 Four Points Venice Mestre . Situated between the lagoon and the mainland, this hotel is located in an area called Sestieri. This area has alleys, museums, historic buildings, majestic palaces, small isles, and ancient villas. Four Points by Sheraton Venice Mestre, strategically located near the city center as well as the railway station. It is a bargain for Venice, but it is not a luxurious hotel.

I write this review while lazing on the balcony of my Junior suite, dappled in sunlight at the JW Marriott Venice. The outlook is not what you would expect of Venice; all I can hear is bird song, and all I can see is an expanse of green forested gardens with the odd glimpse of Venetian Lagoon through the trees. This impressive luxury Marriott hotel opened in March 2015. Arrive by water taxi if you can. Not only is this a glamorous way to travel through Venice, but the dock at the JW Marriott is like something out of a Bond movie, providing a great first view of the property.

The Riva Legend: an Italian Success Story of Craftsmanship and Engineering

The history of the esteemed Italian Riva shipyard dates back to 1842, when young Pietro Riva started making a name for himself, restoring yachts damaged by a storm on Lake Iseo, Italy, like no other. He continued to open the Riva shipyard in Sarnico, where he started developing the first Riva models, earning Riva yachts an excellent reputation. His son Ernesto Riva then continued his father’s legacy by introducing the first Riva yachts powered by internal combustion engines.

Since the Riva shipyard was acquired by the Ferretti Group in 2000, the brand and its reputation have only grown.
