What’s  next.

Each week you’ll receive an email about Long Beach Yacht Club and choose an experience that guides your immersion into our way of life. You can always return to this page at any time for information regarding your new membership!

We are known for our signature sailing regatta - Congressional Cup - yet we were founded in order to host a powerboat race.

The repeated use of a red star in our burgee is a wink to LBYC member Eddie Fink, who won the Star Class World title in 1932.

Star Boats were an Olympic class sailboat, and the win was key to Long Beach's fleet to be sponsors in the 1932 elimination rounds for the Olympics. (Gilbert Gray of New Orleans ended up representing Long Beach).

The palm trees in the club's parking lot were all planted over one weekend by LBYC volunteers. The trees arrived from a farm in Palm Springs in two pickup trucks, and individual members sponsored the tree purchase - $25 apiece!

The lava rocks in the general manager’s office, the library, and the exterior round-about all came over on one vessel for the club's tiki architecture.

The LBYC pool is 25 yards and heated year-round.

Our race committee boat is named after our first commodore: Loynes.

The clubhouse was designed by Montierth and Stickland - well known mid century modern trailblazers. The building blends South Sea Island treatments with contemporary design glass walls.

Montierth and Stickland also designed the marine bazaar and the marina restrooms.

Our first clubhouse was donated to the Sea Scouts - a long-term relationship between the Scouts and the club that has continued.

Grunion sports, grunion sports | on the water: alamitos bay yacht club welcomes potential members.

alamitos bay yacht club

Alamitos Bay Yacht Club’s annual open house is from noon to 4 p.m. this Saturday, June 4.  There will be hot dogs on the grill, sailboats on the water and plenty of folks to talk to about joining the club, according to the flyer that has been distributed.

“Whether interested in sailing casually, racing at any level or just relaxing and enjoying the club and all it has to offer, ABYC has something for everyone,” 2022 Commodore Brooke Jolly wrote in a text.

Director of Membership Michael Oliver has arranged for a variety of different types of boats to be on hand for visitors to take for a test drive.

Outerwave Surf Band will be performing, the no-host bar will be open, and members will be conducting tours of the clubhouse. There will be complimentary food, and special membership incentives will be offered for those who join.

The club, celebrating its 98th birthday this summer, is located at the end of the Peninsula, at 7201 E. Ocean Blvd., and has a rich history. To members, it is about being out on the water more than sitting in a clubhouse.

Historically, members have met in fellow sailors’ homes, an old firehouse “hand me down” from the Port of Long Beach, and a funky floating barge.

Today, the clubhouse has the prime location on the bay, with 360-degree views of the beach, bay and Port. The recent remodel of the upstairs bar area resembles an East Coast club, with vintage photos documenting the club’s history on the walls.

“We have a modern clubhouse facility, and our paved boat yard is home to 200-plus sailboats, owned by our members who are active racers and cruisers. We also have excellent beach access from our western gate for convenient enjoyment of our tranquil and inviting Alamitos Bay. ABYC’s primary goal is to provide a family-friendly atmosphere where we can get together and share our love of sailing,” Commodore Jolly wrote.

Blazing Sabots

If you do opt to join, there are events like the upcoming Men’s Day regatta on June 19 — Father’s Day — in Naples Sabots. Toni Morford, whose husband and daughter have both served as ABYC Commodores, suggested readers might want to chuckle at some highlights of the Blazing Sabots Notice of Race that include:

Weight Classes: The Good (Heavy), The Bad (Heavier), The Buoyant (heaviest).

ABYC recommends that all competitors wear personal flotation devices while on the water. Since you are all big boys, we will leave that up to you.

It is not our fault if you get hurt or catch a disease indigenous to Alamitos Bay.

Support person vessels, including coach and spectator boats, shall stay out of the way, but can be used as a refreshment dispensary.

To separate the Men from the Boys, all sailors must meet the minimum age requirement of 18.

Oh, and you must be a man, hence “Men’s Day Regatta.” The event fee includes a Western breakfast, a tap into a “pony” keg and other grub. Weighing of competitors, along with snide comments, will be from 1000 to 1130.

SafeSport Training

All laughing aside, the safety of our sport is essential. US Sailing, the national governing body for the sport of sailing in the United States, is required under federal law to educate its members about the US Center for SafeSport’s abuse reporting mechanisms.

The mandatory child abuse prevention training is for board members, staff, junior sailing committee members including event chairs and staff as well as all race officials. The training is recommended for anyone who interacts with a junior sailor.

Commodore Jolly is encouraging everyone to complete the free online class. She even hinted of a celebratory event for ABYC’s membership if the goal was reached this summer. I hope other clubs and those in youth sailing follow her lead.

As we prepare to host the 2028 Olympics, I encourage everyone in our water community to take advance of this opportunity to become educated on the law. To take the training, access the US Sailing SafeSport link www.ussailing.org/competition/resources/safesport-us-sailing.

If you are an active adult, and you are looking for private sailing lessons, look no further. The Tempest fleet at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) in Long Beach, California is a sailing school that offers a premier experience in learning how to sail. You will be learning how to sail in a 22-foot keelboat called a Tempest, and it is fun, fast and stable. You will receive a total of 25 hours of private instruction over four consecutive Saturdays. This includes about 11 hours of onshore instruction and about 14 hours of on-water instruction. Your instruction will be supervised by instructors who are certified by the American Sailing Association (ASA). When you graduate, you will receive a certificate from ASA for completing ASA-101 Basic Keelboat Sailing. You will learn how to sail right off the coast in Long Beach, where the sailing events in the 1984 Olympics took place. The offshore breakwater protects the bay from large waves, and the wind is typically great for learning how to sail. …

This is the best place to sail - great people, great weather, consistent breeze! What more could you ask for?!

First and foremost the course was phenomenal. I learned a lot, became more comfortable with things I already knew and reinvigorated my passion for sailing. We took the adult sailing program at ABYC. The course was well thought out. Each morning started with an on-shore portion. We were taught boat safety, rules of the water, useful knots with their application on/off boats. We would discuss the sail plan for the day and review anything from the previous week(s) we had questions/or concerns about. We were fortunate to be able to sail on Tempests and have one-on-one instructor to student per boat. Dominic and Greg, our instructors, were extremely knowledgeable, both life long sailors and great instructors! Initially we were shown and asked to assist in rigging the boat for the day's sail. Progressing to be able to rig it on our own. Of course the instructors checked the boat over to make sure everything was done correctly and most importantly was safe. The bulk of the day was spent on the water learning and practicing sailing. Highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn or advance their sailing skills.

I've never been on a sailing boat before, but was looking for sailing classes because the new company I joined has a sailing club. I'm Soooo glad that I happened to pick this program run by Dominic and Henk! They are super knowledgeable and patient. The private lesson format definitely helps, as you have your hands on the tiller and sail sheets all the time. Navigating on the breezy ocean on a hot summer day is such a fun! For me the extra bonus is to also have the opportunity understanding the sailing mechanics as I majored in engineering. Highly recommend!!

After learning the basics at Leeway Sailing Center (Alamitos Bay in Long Beach), I found this adult sailing program to advance my skills. I highly recommend this program if you are serious about learning how to handle a boat - from advance sailing, regatta racing, boat repair and maintenance, and beyond. If you commit the time, you will truly learn. Plus it's a great group of lifelong sailors and wonderful individuals who love to have fun!

Photo of Diana S.

Never having sailed in my life...didn't really know what to expect from the sailing classes...just knew I was super excited. It was a great experience from the first class to the last. Coach Cris and Dominic were very patient, encouraging, and knowledgeable. The classes were informative and the "on water" time on a 22ft keelboat called a Tempest, actually practicing what I learned in the classroom lesson, was a great experience! As a novice sailor, I really received a quality and exciting introduction into the exhilarating world of sailing. Thanks so much and can't wait until the next opportunity for getting on the water!

Photo of Melissa K.

Best ASA101 sailing program out there. I've taken a few courses before and this one by far outshone them. Because the lessons were 1 on 1, I had all the attention and all the tiler time. We were able to address any modules that were especially challenging for me. The classroom work was thorough, but not too long. Dominic really wants to get you on the water and practicing as much as possible. The instructors, Dominic, Henk, and Chris are all patient and great at explaining situations. The boats themselves, tempests, are kept in great condition and are so much fun to learn on. I highly recommend this class for anyone with no sailing experience, or even with a little bit but wants to fine tune their skills. I feel 10 times more confident in my sailing abilities and have even done some solo sailing now.

Photo of Anme W.

I agree with Melissa. I've taken at other schools in Southern CA, including private lessons, and this class at ABYC was by far the best one. The classroom work was excellent and for the first time I understood concepts that had escaped me in the past. The instructors were patient and knowledgable. The boats, Tempests, are amazingly fun. So much so that now I am a proud owner of one! If you want to take sailing classes, this is the place to do it!
