New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Apart from the skipper’s fee, you have to also provide his meals either from the meals you prepare on board or at an eating place ashore. The skipper’s fee, regardless of the season and the people on board, is €140 to €190 depending on the yacht rental. You may wish to hire also a cook/hostess. The fee per day is generally 10 euro less than the skipper’s and you need to provide berth and meals as for the skipper. The running expenses for a skippered yacht charter are just like those of a bareboat charter (fuel, gas, water, meals, port/marina fees, etc.), plus the costs for the hired crew as above. If you have a valid sailing license and previous experience (with the patent, your sailing resume must be required). But if you cannot drive the boat, you can hire a captain to take care of it. A skipper usually goes to the vessel and cleans it externally. If you wish to have more services, such as internal cleaning and cooking, you can add a hostess or a cook.

The  cabin charter is usually available aboard gulets and catamarans: you will share the vessel with other people, renting just your cabin. Usually, for these types of yacht charters, you also have packages that can comprehend half or entire board (as per your demands), tot—number of cruising hours per day with a fixed itinerary, final cleaning, and generator hour.

Few sailboats over 50 feet can be rented without a skipper, so if you are interested in chartering a big boat, remember that a captain/crew could be included aboard.

When you enjoy a bareboat charter, the price includes the VAT, the use of the boat for the period, and the first and last night at base port (so if you opt for a one-way charter or to start/end from another port, the marina’s fees will not be included).

You have to apply all the expenses, such as docking, fuel, food, drinks, etc.

What does bareboat + skipper mean? How much does it cost?

The boats available in bareboat can also be booked with a skipper, and in this case, the rate for the captain is extra and it’s not included. If you are looking for an exclusive private and luxury charter, you will rent the whole gulet for a more customized service. In this case, the cost of the gulet depends, as usual, on its dimension, equipment, and year of build. Keep in mind that usually the gulets are the type of vessels that have many cabins and that can accommodate more guests than the other boats.

The rate of an exclusive gulet charter in Greece usually includes using the boat and the crew. You will have to consider on top of the VAT and the expenses, usually paid by the A.P.A. (fuel, food, drinks, marinas, transfers, etc.).

Payment, taxes, and charter terms

Usually, the payment terms for charter are as follows:

• 50% of the Charter Rate upon signing the contract;
• Balance within 30 days before the departure;
• Extras and deposit upon embarkation;

In the case of the crewed luxury charter, the A.P.A. is due with the balance within one month before the embarkation.

Alternatively, in some cases, it’s required to pay 30% upon confirmation and 70% within 45 days before.
