A Holiday Home on the Move
By Kate Singleton
- Nov. 20, 2008
The Firestones of California are an extended family with a close-knit circle of friends, all of whom have been involved in projects together since they were children. They all get along so well that they call themselves FFF, for Firestone Family and Friends.
And now the FFF share a holiday home: a 52-meter (171-foot) yacht named Tamsen. It is always on the move, most recently in the waters off New Zealand and next summer the FFF is thinking about taking it to the Mediterranean or Alaska.
Launched in April 2007, the Tamsen is deep blue of hull and light and airy in superstructure. It was built by Perini Navi of Viareggio, Italy, one of the yachting world's best-known construction companies.
Each Perini vessel takes around three years to build and costs more than 500,000 euros ($625,000) per meter of length, depending on the degree of customization.
Sailing as an expression of teamwork has long been part of the Firestone ethos. In 1973, Robert Firestone, the clinical psychologist and author, inspired seven California families to buy an unfinished wooden schooner called the Vltava. The aim was to get their teenagers involved in work on the boat and, through the effort, to nurture parent-child relationships.
The project culminated in 1976 with a successful two-year circumnavigation involving 11 youngsters aged 14 to 19. The skipper for that voyage was 16-year-old Steve Firestone, Robert's son.
Many years later, Steve Firestone married the person whose design expertise gave the Tamsen much of its distinctive look. Although Steve and Sue Firestone now are divorced, they still agree on many matters and the Tamsen's interiors were entrusted to sfa design, Sue Firestone's interior design business based in Santa Barbara, Calif.
"We worked very closely with the Perini team," Ms. Firestone said. "There was a constant back and forth for more than two and a half years, from the initial space planning to furniture design and fabric selection."
The project was not a small one – the five-cabin area alone totals 128 square meters (1,378 square feet), with another 111 square meters (1,195 square feet) devoted to the saloon and wheelhouse.
Sfa's ideas for the Tamsen's interior were shaped in close collaboration with FFF members, who include John Zamir, the ship's captain – who was just 6 when he joined the Vitava's circumnavigation crew, and Julie Lubin, once the Vitava's youngest crew member and now the chief financial consultant for all the Firestone family businesses.
Steve Firestone and his stepmother, Tamsen Firestone, whose name was the inspiration for the yacht's title, had definite ideas about the overall layout as well as the function of each room. "They came up with creative solutions to ensure an optimal, versatile layout that would carry out our personal vision," while also matching Perini's classical standards, Sue Firestone said.
Each area in the Tamsen was designed to use natural lighting. The saloon, dining area and staterooms all mix the warm tones of Italian leathers with fabrics whose printed motifs were drawn from paintings by Robert Firestone.
The Tamsen is crewed by FFF members but doing away with the standard crew quarters was not an option, Sue Firestone said, because "we always had to consider an eventual resale of the yacht."
"However, the Tamsen was designed with more open spaces, large comfortable sitting areas and more ease of movement between the areas that are traditionally divided between owner and crew," she said, adding, "Our crew quarters, which cover 131 square meters (1,410 square feet), sleep six comfortably."
"We also raised the galley to the boat's main deck instead of having it tucked away in the lower level with the crew's quarters" because cooking is a social activity for the family, Ms. Firestone said.
On a recent voyage from Hawaii to Tahiti, the Tamsen's functional ingenuity inspired Ms. Firestone to think differently about the interiors that sfa is developing for a hotel client.
"Living on the Tamsen has helped me focus on space," she said. "For every home we design I find myself constantly thinking about how to keep from wasting any square footage and trying to find dual purposes for every furniture piece."
The Firestone family on board Tamsen
Siblings at sea
The Firestone family has owned Tamsen since 2007. Sisters Carolyn and Lena recall the pleasures of growing up sailing on this remarkable boat.
“We have a very close, extended family that includes many brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews with whom we often travel. Our father, Robert, started his boating life before we were born, with Vltava. By the time we were born in the 1980s, our father had Tamara. When I was three days old, I flew across the Atlantic with my mother and joined the boat in the Mediterranean. So I literally grew up sailing. Every winter we’d spend at least a month on the boat and every summer we’d spend three months aboard. Sailing was more than a vacation, it was a way of life. When I was eight years old, I was standing four-hour watches. We sailed to Alaska when I was nine. My sister and I helped cook and clean. There was a whole bunch of us on the boat, camping out, sleeping on sofas and on the floor, everywhere — siblings, cousins and close friends. Our family sailing trips meant we were all in it together and we were all part of the crew.
We have had two sailing yachts, both called Tamsen. Our current Tamsen, spearheaded by our brother Steve and named for our mother (his stepmother), was custom-built – our boat was designed specifically for our big, extended family. For instance, we needed large communal dining spaces. Also, our galley is on the main deck instead of below deck because we all like to cook together.
While Tamsen certainly is luxurious and beautiful, our life aboard is not what one imagines. The crew is made up of close friends and family, and we all pitch in and work together.”
“Growing up in a communal yachting family where we all worked together gave us an incredible foundation for our current lives. We learned to co-exist in a relatively small space, and we solved problems together. We had a real sense of responsibility to each other.
Every time we got to a new port, we were not only excited to be there, but we took pride in getting there. It was always a great sense of accomplishment. We were also exposed to different countries and different cultures. Tamsen has travelled from the Med to the South Pacific, to Australia and to the Caribbean.
My two-year-old son already feels very much a part of the boat. The sense of love and family togetherness has translated to our adult lives. Four of our siblings work together professionally for a mental health non-profit called the Glendon Association and we have a website called PsychAlive.org – psychology for everyday life. We owe a lot of who we are to our sailing together as a family.”

Change for the better

Commerce Profile: The Firestone Family’s “Tireless”
August 20, 2012 by Wendy Costa
Like a migrating bird, the motor yacht “Tireless” spends the winters in the Florida Keys and returns to the Sassafras River every summer. The legendary Annapolis boat builder, John Trumpy, built the 68 foot yacht in 1963 for the Firestone family, who then owned Knight Island on the Cecil County side of the Sassafras. They kept “Tireless” in Back Creek, just across from Mount Harmon Plantation. Since the family made tires, “Tireless” seemed an especially appropriate name. The Firestones entertained presidents and British royalty aboard the yacht. After Roger Firestone died in the late 1960s, the boat had a couple of other owners, and it was renamed “Principia.”
Dale and James spent nearly three months restoring “Tireless” to its original elegance. They live aboard and share their enthusiasm for it with guests who come from all over the country and abroad. For several years, their clients were mostly corporations that held employee and customer appreciation parties aboard “Tireless.” However, after the stock market crash of 2008 and the subsequent recession, many corporations cut back on such events, so the business now attracts mainly individuals who hold weddings, bridal showers, anniversaries, birthdays, and other special occasions on board. People can charter “Tireless” for two hours or two weeks or almost any length of time in between. In the thirteen years since acquiring the vessel, nearly 5,000 passengers have come aboard.
During the summers, “Tireless” lives at Georgetown Yacht Basin, located in Georgetown Harbor in the Sassafras River. If you like the great natural beauty of the Chesapeake Bay, the great manmade beauty of a classic yacht, and like wonderful food, give Dale or James a call at (215) 499-8288 or visit their website, www.tirelesscharters.com .

I was in Rock Hall on Sunday, August 19 and saw “Tireless” making her way out of the Rock Hall Harbor with probably about a dozen people on the forward deck. That boat bears a very striking resemblance in every respect — size, style, and appearance, to a craft named “Silver Dawn”, which was home ported in Rock hall in the early 1960’s and also traveled to Florida each winter. Silver Dawn was owned by Edgecomb Steel Co. in Philadelphia, and captained by the late Pres Jacobs, whose widow still lives just up the street from the harbor. I believe Silver Dawn may have been built in the late 1930’s. She was a spectacular boat. Does anybody know if and where she still exists? How about it Rep. Jay Jacobs — do you have any insight?

About 5 years ago I posted an inquiry about the Silver Dawn on Wooden Boat Rescue and still receive tidbits of information. Unfortunately know one seems to know her fate. I would really love to find her, she was the epitome of style to me as a young girl and still is when it comes to boats.

Our Latest Super-Yacht: the Tamsen
August 25, 2011 by Editors
We respect your privacy, and never share or sell email addresses.
The latest mega-yacht visitor to the deep water anchoring spots off the Bridgeway Promenade in Sausalito is the Tamsen , a 171-foot long super-yacht. The shot above was taken from an editor's deck in the early morning overcast.
The Tamsen is a full 12 feet shorter than Larry Ellision's Zenji , which was moored in a similar spot just a few weeks ago. The owner is an executive named Steve Firestone, we have video of the vessel below and you can read about Firestone and the yacht here . It was built in Italy at the Perini Shipyards, where the yachts apparently cost abpout $21,000 per inch of length. Yes, we said "inch."
Update: Late this morning the Tamsen moved from the Bridgeway Promenade up to the Schoonmaker Yacht Harbor, where it is currently anchored.
In 2009 we were fascinated by the arrival of the Attessa, where we were the ones to identify the mysterious vessel . Last year the big visitor was the bizarre "A" of a Russian billionaire . We find the tall ships style of this summer's visitors to be far more graceful additions to our views!

Very Large Schooner
By an edhat reader
There is a very large schooner/yacht anchored near the end of the breakwater and near where the dredge usually is located.
Anyone know who the boat belongs to?

Do you have a photo? Davis Crosby (RIP) owned a schooner named the Mayan for many years. After falling into some disrepair he had it fully restored in 2005.
Way bigger than Crosbys’ boat, this is the 160′ Tamsen, owned by the Firestone family and flagged out of the Caymen Islands.
Thank you both, I did learn the following: It belongs to the Firestone Family, specifically Steve Firestone (not related to the Brooks Firestone family). Steve is CEO of Somera Capital, based in Santa Barbara, a real estate investment/development firm, who has been one of my clients. Its name is Tasman, and it is 171 feet usually can be found in the Mediterranean.

Look Inside the $15M Newport Estate of the Firestone Family
New England’s hottest listing may well be the historic Firestone estate in Newport, Rhode Island. Properly called Ocean Lawn, the stately Queen-Anne-style manor has manicured lawns that look to roll all the way down to the Atlantic Ocean. It was built by the white-shoe Boston firm of Peabody & Stearns in 1889, but its most famous residents moved in during the 1950s—the best-dressed-listed Betty Parke Firestone and her tire-and-rubber tycoon husband Harvey S. Firestone, Jr. Ocean Lawn offers its next stylish owners nearly seven waterfront acres, glorious formal gardens and an expansive pool and terrace. It’s all yours for $15 million; listed with Melanie Delman and Lila Delman Real Estate International in Newport, Rhode Island. 401-284-4820.

Sue Firestone Sets Sail
Copy and images from Sue Firestone.
As the seasons change, we find ourselves dreaming of escaping to a perfect paradise. We asked our dear friend Sue Firestone about her favorite dream destination and she certainly didn’t disappoint. Who wouldn’t want to relax on a gorgeous yacht sailing across the sea? It got us thinking about how maritime design and the many options there are to create a secluded oasis abroad. Firestone was up for the challenge and shared with us the ways she would design her perfect yacht.
We launched our beloved 154 foot Perini Navi Tamsen in 2007.
When I originally designed the fabric selection for the boat, all of the fabrics had to be from Italian or European sources. This year we are coming up with another “soft renovation” so I was very excited to see Kravet’s new maritime collections.
For the outside areas like the flybridge I would select a great outdoor fabric such as Kravet Echo Melanger Maritime fabric because of its cool turquoise tones. On the after deck couches I would accessorize with throw pillows made from the Corsis Stripe fabric because of the nautical feel of the stripes.
The main salon couches are a warm masculine leather and I would add a few throw pillows made out of the Rio – Jewel , Ultrasuede Green – Carrot and Novara – Bluebird . To accessorize I would add some delightful decor, such as the Henney Box, Large and Sera Bowl .
In the guest room I would replace the existing bedspread with a fresh fabric like Geode – Blue and I would use a fabric from my own Malibu Collection for Kravet – Threadlike in Glint as window treatments.

1. Process of lamp light replacement should be managed more effectively. 2. It is too noisy in the inner rooms - noise from events (bad sound isolation) 3. All other aspects are on the good level.

The yacht Tamsen was commissioned by Robert Fairstone, a famous psychologist living in Santa Barbara, no less famous to our readers. Since childhood, he, his family, and his friends have formed a very close circle of friends called FFF - Fairstone Family and Friends. They built the yacht Tamsen, named after Robert's second wife.

Tamsen has a fuel capacity of 45,700 litres, and a water capacity of 13,000 litres. She also has a range of 3,400 nautical miles.
In many ways, the 171-foot (52-meter) Tamsen, which came in second overall in the Corinthian Spirit class, sums up Perini's aspirations for those who buy the yard's yachts.Four generations of the Californian Firestone family routinely cruise on board, and the yacht has covered more than 200,000 nautical miles since her launch more than a decade ago.

Award winning. Sleeps 10 overnight. The award winning 52m/170'7" sail yacht 'Tamsen' was built by Perini Navi in Italy at their Viareggio shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Ron Holland Design and she was delivered to her owner in July 2007. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Perini Navi.
An extreme example of this is Tamsen, the 171-foot (52.1-meter) ketch launched by Perini Navi in 2007 for the Firestone family of California. The yacht has a huge galley space on the forward main deck where the extended family—children, grandchildren, aunts, uncles and cousins—can all pile into at mealtimes.
Like a migrating bird, the motor yacht "Tireless" spends the winters in the Florida Keys and returns to the Sassafras River every summer. The legendary Annapolis boat builder, John Trumpy, built the 68 foot yacht in 1963 for the Firestone family, who then owned Knight Island on the Cecil County side of the Sassafras.

The newly launched in 2007, Tamsen, recent addition to the Firestone Family fleet of yachts, joined the family's other 120' Delta motor yacht, Lara, in Santa Barbara harbor this week. Firestone was up for the challenge and shared with us the ways she would design her perfect yacht. We launched our beloved 154 foot Perini Navi Tamsen in 2007. When I originally designed the fabric selection for the boat, all of the fabrics had to be from Italian or European sources.
