About MC Sailing Association

The MC Sailing Association originally formed in Shreveport LA, 1971. Since then, the MC class has grown to be one of the top one-design sailboat racing classes in North America. The scow design maximizes speed yet provides unmatched stability. There are more than 110 active fleets nationwide. An original design by the Melges family in 1956, it is unique in the fact that you can sail single-handed or double-handed. Sailing solo is easy, taking a crew is fun! The MC class is not just about racing — it has also been described by many people outside of the class as a very enjoyable and fun group to spend a weekend with!

Welcome to the MC Sailing Association

Published on January 31st, 2022 by Editor -->

The 16-foot MC Scow was born in the 1950s, and depending on wind strength will be sailed by one or two people. Its famous flat hull shape revels in lake conditions, but requires the right amount of heel to avoid excess drag through the water.

With just a mainsail, there is less for a crew to do other than hike, but this role also is a gateway for countless youth sailors and new adults to gain exposure, and the MC Class is thriving.

In this day and age when the mantra ‘foiling is the future’ diminishes the bulk of the sport, the MC Class Association (MCSA) reports that other variables beyond technical advancements are what matter.

“2021 was a year of MCSA records: 84 boats at Midwinters, 119 boats at Nationals, and the best record of all is officially topping the 700+ membership plateau for the first time in our history!” reports MCSA Commodore Scott Harestad.

mc sailboat

“The strength of our association comes from having a strong consistent boat builder, multiple sail makers, and some very enthusiastic members who promote the MC fleet at their clubs. I’m especially thankful for the new friendships that grow through your attendance at local, regional, and our sanctioned regattas.

“Financially speaking we are looking very strong and your board is working on projects to provide you with more sailing instruction days, live GO Pro videos, additional drone footage at select events, and increased social media.

“This coming year our sanctioned events take us from Lake Eustis, Florida to Gull Lake, Minnesota to Barnegat Bay, New Jersey and ending in Spring Lake, Michigan. I hope to see on a starting line soon!”

The class is actively looking for good used boats, hoping to pry them apart from sentimental owners who haven’t used them in some time. Plus, the MC Scow will gain exposure as the boat selected for the 2022 U.S. Championship of Champions.

MC Scow User Guide, Part 1: Boat Setup and Maintenance

The MC Scow class is growing rapidly. Some of the sailors joining the class don’t have much sailing experience, so we decided to develop an MC Scow user guide to help them learn the basics quickly.

There are also plenty of MC tips on the MC Sailing Association (MCSA) website and the Melges website. Be sure to join the MCSA. This organization provides tremendous value to the class.

SailZing’s MC Scow User Guide

Our MC Scow user guide covers what you need to know to get started in the MC, with plenty of tips to make the process easier and links for more information. We’ll publish it in three parts:

  • Boat setup and maintenance
  • Basic sailing, safety, and seamanship
  • Racing overview

Download part 1 of the user guide (pdf) here . Part 1 describes the MC scow in some detail and provides set-up and maintenance tips.

  • Gelcoat care
  • Hull structures – – bulkhead, backbone, etc.
  • Hull fittings
  • Mast fittings and rigging
  • Boom and fittings
  • Rudder, tiller, and extension
  • Bilge boards (also called leeboards)
  • Hiking straps
  • Sail controls
  • Rigging the boat
  • Parts and accessories

To whet your interest, here are a few of the many questions answered in Part 1.

  • Should I coil my mainsheet?
  • What can I do about spider cracks in the gelcoat?
  • How can I keep my boom blocks from twisting?
  • What spares should I have on hand?
  • How do I know if my boards are far enough down?
  • What are some important upgrades to consider?
  • What is a gudgeon?
  • Can I step the mast by myself?

HOT NEWS from Roger MacGregor :

AFTER BUILDING 40,000 MACGREGOR SAILBOATS, ITS RETIREMENT TIME.  (Sort of) .

It has dawned on the MacGregors that we are suddenly way beyond retirement age, beyond geezerhood, and it’s time to start a new career. We have recently ended production of the MacGregor sailboats at our Costa Mesa, California plant, and are continuing to develop our all new MacGregor 70. We have converted our 5 acre production site to 11 industrial rental units. We are now big time landlords.

EVERY YEAR, FOR THE PAST 40 YEARS , THE VARIOUS MODELS OF THE MACGREGOR 25 AND MACGREGOR 26 HAVE BEEN THE BEST SELLING SMALL CRUISING TYPE SAILBOATS, NOT ONLY IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.   WE CAN THINK OF NO OTHER MANUFACTURER, OF ANY TYPE OF PRODUCT, THAT HAS SO TOTALLY DOMINATED ITS MARKET FOR SO LONG A PERIOD OF TIME .

M-16 Scow is a 16 ′ 0 ″ / 4.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Johnson/Melges Boat Works and built by Tanzer Industries Ltd., Melges Performance Sailboats, and Windward Boatworks starting in 1950.

Drawing of M-16 Scow

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Since 1999, all new M-16’s have been built using the MC SCOW hull and deck molds and now shares other rigging, such as a single rudder, with the MC SCOW. The main sheet traveller has been done away with and the mast no longer rotates.

Sail Area Main: 108 sq.ft. Jib: 39 sq.ft.

Irish four-seat boats deliver at Big Ten Invitational

Irish claim five first-place finishes in sarasota.

The Notre Dame rowing team competed in its fourth event of the regular season over the weekend, taking on the Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Florida. The team’s four-seat boats produced strong results, as the first varsity four and the second varsity four each won two out of three races.

Notre Dame’s first varsity four group of freshman Sara Louser, sophomore Julia Clavi, freshman Scarlett Quinn, sophomore Morgan Rice and junior coxswain Grace Collins pushed the pace all weekend long. The Irish took first in Friday morning’s race, beating out Iowa, Minnesota and Oklahoma with a time of 7 minutes and 29.258 seconds. Though they finished second to Indiana in Friday’s afternoons contest, the Irish returned to the top with a first-place time of 7:22.470 on Saturday morning. In that race, the Irish bested Alabama, UCF, Iowa and Wisconsin.

The second varsity four team found similar success, winning its first two races on the weekend. Freshman Grace Hartzell, freshman Grayson Conway, freshman Emma Hopsicker, senior Audrey Burri and coxswain freshman Margaret Abbot combined for a time of 7:32.357 on Friday morning. In the afternoon, they won again with a 7:42.917 time that topped Indiana and Michigan State. Saturday morning’s race went Iowa’s way, as the Irish took third in 7:36.083.

Notre Dame also competed in the first, second and third varsity eights. The third team of freshman Claire Macy, freshman Esther Prantil-Evans, junior Clodagh McEvoy-Johnston, sophomore c, freshman Lena Meyer, junior Michaela Carroll, freshman Christina Henning, sophomore Grace Taylor and freshman coxswain Joyce Kang won on Friday morning with a time of 6:59.442. The other two teams went as high as second place in their races.

Up next, the Irish will compete in a four-team regatta hosted by Princeton. Notre Dame will go up against Princeton, Columbia and Northeastern on Saturday.

Two ambulances parked at the Brooklyn Army Terminal near a ship called the Cornucopia Majesty.

Two men were stabbed and another was hit in the head with a bottle on a crowded party boat in Brooklyn on Saturday evening, the authorities said.

The men were hospitalized with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, police and fire officials said.

The police said the attacks forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 passengers from the boat, a cruise ship called the Cornucopia Majesty , which was docked at Pier 4 at the Brooklyn Army Terminal.

A 32-year-old man was stabbed in the torso, a 40-year-old man was stabbed several times in the chest and abdomen, and a 28-year-old man was hit in the head with a bottle, the police said. All three men were taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn.

The stabbings happened just after 5 p.m., the police said. No arrests had been made as of Saturday night, and it was unclear how many attackers had been involved.

The police said they believed that a dispute had escalated into a physical altercation, but that the events leading up to the stabbings were still under investigation.

Just before 8 p.m., the group that organized the party, BYFAR Entertainment, posted a statement to social media .

“Unfortunately, a crime scene developed by the pier, which has caused the postponement of the night event,” the company said. “We will have updates on a later date so just hold on tight with us while we sort everything out. BYFAR Entertainment has always been a beacon of safe events in New York City and this rare occurrence has never been the norm with us.”

In the hours before the fight, the Cornucopia Majesty had hosted a party .

Passengers said in interviews that they had enjoyed dancing, eating and drinking rum aboard the ship, but by early evening, they were standing confused on the pier, surrounded by police cruisers and ambulances.

Glendon Thomas, 29, a resident of New Jersey, said he and several friends realized a fight had broken out on the ship only after they disembarked.

“I saw a guy laying on his friend,” he said, adding that the friend appeared to have a wound on his chest.

Kevaun Whitely, who lives in Brooklyn, said the fight had broken out as a large crowd of rowdy partygoers — many of whom had been drinking alcohol — attempted to disembark through the same door.

“It was like a stampede,” Mr. Whitely, 27, said.

The police kept Mr. Whitely and several other people on board the ship for hours as they checked identification, he said.

“I’m glad we got out safe,” he said, adding, “I hope nobody passed away from all this craziness.”
