Spetses

Spetses Yacht Charters

Explore spetses on your luxury yacht charter in greece.

Virtually undiscovered, with the horse-drawn carriage as the preferred mode of transport, the enchanting Spetses island offers curious yacht charter guests an authentic snapshot of Grecian luxury and history.

With its mystical sunsets, quaint, familiar feel, and pleasant demeanor, it’s hard to believe this island was also a major player in the War of Independence. Even still, its long naval history and reputation for being the place where the revolution flag was raised in the 1821 War of Independence remain apparent in the island’s proud residents and statuesque buildings.

At the center of the island, its town square sits timeless and idyllic; lined with grandiose villas, ancient churches, and local tavernas, and dotted with pedestrians smiling and laughing as they go for a leisurely stroll. Boasting an energetic and happy vibe, the island’s waterfront includes rows of luxurious yachts floating seemingly aimlessly in the Saronic Gulf; just around the corner from Spetses’ historic shipyards, where local workers still hammer away as they did during the War of Independence.

Set sail to Spetses on your private charter yacht, and discover its radiating history firsthand.

Spetses Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See

Spetses yacht charters

The House of Bouboulina : Once the home of Lascarina Bouboulina – recognized as being one of the most critical fighters in the 1821 War of Independence, and the first woman in Greek history to be awarded the rank of Admiral by the Russian Navy – today, the House of Bouboulina is a public museum. Since Lascarina first moved to Spetses in 1775, the island has had a unique connection to this Hellenic heroine. Having built her own fleet of three naval ships during the infamous war, allowing her to aid in the liberation of Nafplion and Tripoli, she has since been a household name on this Saronic island ; and her 300-year-old house remains to remind residents and visitors alike of her inherent bravery and skill.

The House of Hatzigiannis Mexis : Built in the late 18th century, the House of Hatzigiannis Mexis is a living memorial of more than 4,000 years of Spetses’ history. Today, the house serves as a working museum; putting significant items from the War of Independence, letters from Greek war heroes Kolokotronis and Athanasios Diakos, a folk art collection, and the relics of Bouboulina on display – giving travelers and locals alike the chance to take in the island’s exciting history.

Church of Panayia Armata : Overlooking the old port in Spetses, the quaint yellow and white Church of Panagia Armata is a symbol of Greece’s legendary defeat of the Ottoman fleet in the naval battle of September 1922. Built by Spetsiote captain Ioannis Koutsis in the early 19th century, the church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary – claiming Greece’s victory in the war to be a miracle of her neverending grace. History aside, this church also boasts some of the best sunset views in Spetses, overlooking the entire town and harbor.

Cathedral of Agios Nikolaos : As the famed site where Spetses’ revolution flag was raised in 1821, symbolizing the island’s freedom, the Cathedral of Agios Nikolaos is a significant part of Spetsiote history. Overlooking one of the island’s most picturesque spots, the beautiful bay of Agios Nikolaos, this cathedral was also the haunted locale where Paul Bonaparte, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, was preserved in a barrel of rum for close to three years.

Vréllos : The Greek word for “paradise,” the pine-filled Vréllos is unarguably the island’s most captivating beach. The starting point for popular hikes to Profitis Elias, the highest point in Spetses, today, Vréllos invites travelers and locals alike to tan on its soft, white sand, wade through its calming waters, catch a glimpse of traditional, Spetsiote living, and as with most locations in the Saronic Gulf, take in its surreal horizon views.

Spetses Yacht Charter

Spetses is a wonderful playground for the global elite, Greek tycoons and yacht charter enthusiasts. It’s an island that has an old-world feel about it, a nautical charm and spectacular scenery. There’s a great mix of traditional and modern restaurants as well as beautiful beaches. The bars and boutiques range from modest to deluxe, all exuding a Greek-island bohemian atmosphere. Read the Essential Greece charter guide .

This lovely island, located in the Saronic Gulf, is one of the Saronic Island Groups that have been called the new Greek Riviera . Ask your captain to sail to Spetses from Athens or Piraeus where you’ll be welcomed into the port. At the port is the 100-year-old Poseidon Grand Hotel – an impressive sight that over the years has hosted many famous stars such as Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. The town has undergone a makeover and the marina has plenty of berths to accommodate Athenian weekenders along with luxury yachts on week-long charters.

The pale white buildings and orange roof tiles are the model of a Greek town and Spetses has avoided becoming a major tourist hotspot, instead attracting superyacht owners and luxury yacht charterers who rub shoulders with locals in the tavernas and cafes.

Learn the story of local war hero and legend Bouboulina, who has a museum and a statue in dedication in the harbour. After strolling around the town and visiting the stately chapels, hike along the trails or find your own stretch of uninhabited beach for sunbathing and excitement with the motorised water toys.

The hotels and restaurants on Spetses are mostly open in the summer months from May until October, and as a result chartering a superyacht gives you an added advantage at this location with all of your on board services and highly trained crew, there to personally serve you and your charter guests.

Take a walk via the intricate winding streets passing boutiques and the busy fish market. Along the way, admire the many cobbled lanes, barber shops and tavernas then when you reach the Old Port you’re sure to see the unique metal mermaid. There’s also an effigy of the Greek heroine Bouboulina who watches over the main port.

On the coast of Spetses are pebbled and sandy beaches, secluded coves and fantastic bays. These bays are ideal for all types of water sports, snorkelling and swimming. Starting around Easter, the island comes alive festivities and carry on until mid-October. In September, there’s a fantastic re-enactment or Armata of the island’s naval victory which took place in 1822. After this re-enactment, a sea battle takes place with the burning of an Ottoman warship, followed by a spectacular firework display.

3 TOP THINGS TO DO IN SPETSES

private yacht charter spetses

There is no doubt that a relaxing walk in the Greek Islands is one of the most stress free activities available during your vacation. Enjoy the colorful architecture, cobblestone alleys, neoclassical buildings, beautiful flowers and scenery, which all create a sublime sensation. If you have anchored in the old port, we strongly encourage a walk from there to Dapia (considered the liveliest area of the island). Observe the manors and relax in one of the numerous cafes located on the waterfront. Aftterwards, stroll to the famous Poseidon Hotel located at the end of the new port, where you can enjoy breakfast in the gorgeous garden with little tables and chairs situated right outside of the lobby. The dazzling view of the Saronic Gulf only adds to the whole experience.

private yacht charter spetses

Although it might sound touristic, it is really a great experience to hire a horse carriage in Spetses. Children are especially fond of these types of rides. The carriage will take you amongst the islands most colorful alleys and the horseman can show you important buildings and provide interesting historical information. Once you are finished with the ride and you return to the old port, we suggest you to visit the Spetses shipyards, where tradition meets art. Still active, the boat builders specialize in wooden boats and can produce various sizes according to the orders they may receive. Spetses is one of the largest shipbuilding locations of Greece and one of the few still operating until today. We encourage you to take the time to see the origins of the boats which gave the Greeks their independance!

private yacht charter spetses

Spetses has some of the best swimming locations available in the Saronic Gulf. This is especially true on the southern side of the island. Whether you are looking for a rocky cove, sandy beach or a turquoise colored bay surrounded by pine trees, you surely will not be disappointed. When sailing with one of our yachts you will have the chance to experience incredible scenery and pristine crystal clear waters. The seas are usually calm as well as the wind, making it an excellent island to explore all her secret coves, private swimming spots and beaches. Combined with the wonderful sights and awesome beaches, everyone is guaranteed to have a memorable time.

From my point of view, Spetses is one of the most breathtaking islands of the Saronic. Her amazing atmosphere and unique natural landscapes should enhance your overall experience while exploring on a sailing yacht or catamaran in the Greek Islands. The charming old port is a perfect place to seek homage from any big swells created by passenger ships bringing people to her shores. Here you can also decide to take a stroll and try the island's famous dish “Fish alla Spetsiota”, definitely a delicious treat after a day of sailing.

Amazing, amazing, amazing!!! We LOVED our time with the Yachtsailing.gr group!

We just got home from a truly magical one week trip through the Saronic Islands on the Yachtsailing.gr group's Oceanis 54 Blackjack yacht. We visited and explored six spectacular islands and countless beautiful bays in seven days (highlights included Hydra, Aegina, Porto Heli, Mandrila port, and Ermioni). There were two families of four traveling together (the four kids were ages 9-13), so a total of eight people on the boat plus our skipper and we never once felt crowded. It is a great boat for traveling with that many people (4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a large main cabin, a huge deck to spread out on, plus the separate kipper's quarters including his own bathroom) - plenty of space for everyone

You can't go wrong if you charter with Maria and Eugene (and if you sail with George) so don't look any further! The hardest question will be which type of boat to select given their great pricing, large fleet, and variety of sailing routes. We will definitely be back as soon as we can. Thank you Yachtsailing.gr for making our sailing trip better than we ever imagined it could be! Cheers and hugs from Amy & George (from Australia) and Noortje & Marc (from Holland) and the kids!

“ Saronic islands and Peloponnesian coast! Trip of a life time! ”

We departed Athens and sailed Poros, Hydra, Hermano, Spetses, Methana, Epidaurus! An incredible adventure with our great Capitan Appo and really beautiful 42’catamaran! This is really is a trip of a lifetime, the islands are extremely beautiful, the food in every port was really exceptional! Let’s see favorite things… jockeying for spots in Hydra(you’ll know why you hired a skipper, but way too fun to watch) swimming in perfect blue lagoons every day, hiking the volcano in Methana, diving on the sunken city, my nephew catching a nice Amber Jack, getting a dolphin escort, getting some really great sailing days in and meeting really warm and engaging people in every port and all over Athens! Would I do it again, yes heading back again next year!

Beaches worth visiting

When visiting by sailing yacht or catamaran, Zogeria is one of the best beaches to anchor on the island. Surrounded by lush green pine trees and golden sand, which lead to sapphire waters, amaze all who visit this lovely beach. This is also a great place to relax and spent the night, because the water is smooth and the weather is calm most of the time. When you have had enough of the beach you can stop by the tavern and chapel located close by.

Agia Paraskevi

This is possibly the most beautiful beach on the island, with golden sand and a gorgeous green surroundings. It is an organized beach with a small beach bar serving snacks and refreshments. Here you may relax onboard, dive into the crystal clear waters, or simply take in the natural scenery.

Agia Marina

One of the most famous and crowded beaches of the island with amenities (sun beds, umbrellas) is located on the southeast side of Spetses. Long, sandy and pebbled beach with a beach bar where you can enjoy your coffee as well as have something for lunch.

Located on the south eastern segment of the island, this beach offers its exclusivity for those seeking more private moments bathing in the sea. Mainly accessible by boat, you will have the chance to relax and enjoy yourself in the presence of nature avoiding the many crowds present on more popular beaches on the island.

Spetsopoula

Spetsopoula is a gorgeous densely green island southeast of Spetses. It belongs to the Stavros Niarchos family, who was a shipping tycoon. Although it is prohibited to visit the island, it is a truly magnificent sight to see during your sails around Spetses.

Sites worth visiting

Mansion of laskarina bouboulina.

Laskarina Bouboulina was a Greek naval commander and heroine of the Greek War of Independence. She was born on the island of Spetses and is the most famous female in modern Greek history. She was a successful businesswoman, philanthropist and naval strategist remembered for her bravery and courage in leading Greek forces against the Ottoman Empire during the Greek War of Independence. She also provided financial support to the Greek cause being the first woman to command a warship in the Mediterranean. After her death, a monument was erected to pay tribute to her many accomplishments.

Cave of Bekiris

One of the most beautiful sights on the island, hidden from plain sight the cave will dazzle visitors with its beauty. Difficult to reach but accessible by boat, you will have the opportunity to enter and explore one of the most beautiful caves in Greece. Stalactites, stalagmites and crystal waters fill the interior and are a sight to behold.  It is said that this cave was used to hide women and children from Turkish invaders. Some also believe that if two lovers drink from its waters they will forever be in love.

Lighthouse of the old Harbor

This is one of the oldest lighthouses in the country, it was first lit in 1837 and operated with oil. It has been automated with electricity since 1986 and still operates till this day. It is located on the right side of the old port and is surrounded by beautiful pine trees. We suggest going to take a look and the lighthouse as well as the excellent view on offer where it is located.

Armata Festival

The Armata Festival is an annual celebration that takes place in September to commemorate the Greek War of Independence. An important battle took place between the Greek and Ottoman navy in 1822, on the 8 th of September. During the festival, the town of Spetses celebrates with a parade, live music, traditional Greek food and festivities. One of the main spectacles is a recreated wooden ship prepared specifically for this occasion. The locals then set this boat alight in remembrance of this historical Greek victory.

Tastes of Spetses

Almond sweets.

Amigdalota is a traditional Greek sweet made from ground almonds, sugar and egg whites. It is often served at important events such as weddings, baptisms and other festive occasions. The dough is rolled into small balls and then deep-fried until golden-brown. Amigdalota is usually coated with a light dusting of powdered sugar and served with a glass of cold water. This is a delicious treat which should not be missed when visiting the Greek islands.

Fish alla Spetsiota

As seafood is one of the specialties of the island, there are plenty of seafood restaurants in Spetses that offer a variety of delicious dishes, ranging from fresh fish and seafood platters to traditional Greek recipes such as shrimp saganaki and fried calamari."Fish alla spetsiota" is a very special classical dish and is made with fish, garlic, onions, parsley, tomato sauce and white wine. The fish is usually pan-fried and served with the sauce over it. If you enjoy fish, this dish is definitely one you would not like to miss.

  • During summer average temperatures usually range from 20° C to 30° C
  • The island is generaly blessed with very pleasant weather and usually has calm seas.
  • If it is quite windy try to check your fenders because most of the times there are big motor yachts entering the port
  • Not so protected port in the Northern wind – Choose Porto Heli instead
  • Nice anchorages that can protect you from the wind, our captains would be responsible to advise you

At the entrance of the Argolikos gulf, the verdant paradise that is Spetses, emerges from the sea.

The island will charm you from the very start as it will take you back to a different era. Its beautiful beaches, harbors, and nature will give you a breathtaking experience as you will venture through its old streets.

With a yachting charter expedition you will be able to explore the island's blue waters and gain a delightful and unforgettable experience from it!

While only a small part of the island is overtaken by the town, the rest of Spetses is covered in verdure, filled with tall pine trees and bushes.

Its old houses and streets are very much inspired by the traditional Peloponnese architecture that has been around since the 1800s.

As you walk through its narrow cobblestone streets you will find yourself drifting into the town’s artistic beauty that will definitely leave a mark of beautiful and unforgettable memories in you.

Your wallet won’t suffer big damages during your visit in Spetses as the island has a relatively low average cost of living with a meal for two costing about 50 euros at a local tavern or, if you’re on a tight budget, 7 euros for 2 pitas with the infamous Greek gyro and a beverage.

A ride with a taxi will cost you about 3 euros per kilometer, while shopping for your essentials at a local supermarket will not cost you more than 25 euros including groceries and perhaps some toiletries.

All in all, you don’t have to stress at all since it can be very budget friendly for everybody!

Spas, bars and local events are scattered across the island, open and ready to service you so you never forget about the luxury, fun and bliss that this island will provide you!

Baltiza, the Old Port with its bright lighthouse, is placed at the south-east of the island’s town and has very easy access to hotels, cafeterias, restaurants etc.

Inside of it fit: private yachts, large yachts, mini cruisers and more. The marina permeates 55m into the Baltiza bay, having a draught of 7m where yachts anchor and passengers are transferred to the picturesque old harbor that has a draught of 5m via small boats.

The port is secure from high winds and it also provides five small piers for passengers’ convenience. The more recent and artificial port of Dapia, provides tourist boats, cargo ships, sea taxis, and passenger ships arriving from Piraeus with two piers, with an inner draught of 3m and an outer draught of 6.5m.

The port of Dapia can be a little trickier for sailboats as it is unprotected by the winds that are usually around 5 Beaufort.

The beaches of Spetses are very spectacular even if their beauty is quite similar.

Most of them are covered in sand but if you have a distaste for sandy towels, pebbled beaches can also be found anywhere. If you want to have a more luxurious break while there you can visit Kaiki. A wonderful place with an aesthetically pleasing beach bar that will surely fulfill your paradise island vacation dreams.

Feeling adventurous and in the mood for taking lots of pictures? Don’t miss out on a visit at the mystical cave that is located in Aghii Anargiri, which will undoubtedly give you an unreal and magical experience!

But if all you really want is just to sit back and relax at a classic Greek beach, Aghia Marina and Aghia Paraskevi have the simplistic beauty that no others have and will be absolutely perfect for you.

In addition all beaches are safe for small children and fairly accessible.

Settlements & Places

Amongst all the available beaches for yachting, Zogeria is definitely the best option for anchoring.

Its sapphire waters are incredibly smooth and are rarely disturbed by any winds.

The beach is filled with pine trees and is perfect for staying overnight and having a joyful camping experience!

Watching the golden sunset and all the colors of the sky mirrored on its crystal clear waters, will be a blissful and unforgettable experience for anyone who passes by Zogeria.

Located in the south-east, Kouzounos is a deserted little island that is perfect for leaving all social interactions and night outs behind and treating yourself with some private time either alone or in the company of friends.

Its clear turquoise waters are just right for swimming and diving. It is also the perfect place to anchor and have a romantic date-night!

The moon shining on its waters –making them glimmer– will automatically make you sigh, because Kouzounos is just this beautiful.

Aghia Marina

Agia Marina is one of the most crowded beaches of the island, and yet you cannot miss its beauty.

You can stop by and order some breakfast, lunch or even a cocktail! The music, the people and the drinks exert a friendly, loud and fun environment for everybody. Its teal waters with the hot sun reflecting on them is a visual that will take your breath away. Its old fashioned appearance will surely have you wide-eyed and speechless.

Aghia Marina is definitely an outside glimpse of the true colors that Spetses has.

Aghia Paraskevi

Covered in green and with a rocky bottom, Aghia Paraskevi also has a very simplistic beauty like Aghia Marina but it will give you a completely different mix of impressions.

The beach is one of the most easily accessible ones and it includes a mini bar where you can order coffee, lunch or a drink. Its tall pine trees offer shade to the visitors so they can enjoy the gorgeous sunset that drapes a golden sheet over the ocean and its red sandy rocks.

The combination of rich history, culture, simplicity and colorful sunsets by the beach that Spetses offer, have the power to awaken a calm and delighted side in you that will surely seem priceless.

Spetses is simply gorgeous and we hope that upon your visit there you will agree with us!

Attractions

Even though the most alluring part of every island is sailing across the waters surrounding it, there are some more activities that are available to you and definitely worth your while!

The Bouboulina’s and Spetses museums are two places that anyone visiting Spetses should stop by. Learning about the history and the contribution of the island’s locals during the Greek war of Independence can be very interesting and quite important for anybody.

But for the more adventurous folk, hiking through the island’s hills, exploring its cobblestone streets through the hand-built houses, or even just going on rides with some absolutely charming horses and ponies, can be entertaining and thrilling!

Traditional ship fire!

If you are lucky enough to find yourself in Spetses during the Autumn don’t miss out on the annual custom of Armata, where a mock-up ship that locals had been building all year is lit on fire mid-sea in a spectacular sight that represents the burning of the Turkish flagship during the Greek war of independence.

Church of Aghios Nikolaos

A really important part of Greek culture is the orthodox religion, so stopping by the church of Aghios Nikolaos will give you the chance to explore the depths of the island’s personality and the culture itself.

Local Delicacies

Fishing is often a very popular job across the Argosaronic gulf, so most of the local foods that Spetses serve, consist of:

  • Delicious fried shrimp which is usually seasoned with classic spices and glazed with lemon,
  • Smoked red fish which is also fried and usually paired with cooked potatoes or French fries, also glazed with ladolemono (olive oil and lemon),
  • and let's not forget about the fried octopus and the deliciously prepared kalamaraki (squid) which are a favourite delicacy all on their own.

Discovering Spetses

private yacht charter spetses

Welcome to the island of the aromas (isola di spezzie) – Discovering Spetses

Spetses, an island boasting a long naval tradition , is famous for its significant contribution to the 1821 War of Independence. It was here that the revolution flag was raised on 3rd April 1821. The island has managed to retain its individual traditional character thanks to its well-preserved grand captain mansions, still bearing eloquent witness to the island’s glorious past. The picturesque old harbour and Dápia , a tourist and commercial centre where the heart of the island’s entertainment beats, are the trademarks of the town of Spetses.

Take a romantic trip around the island in horse-drawn carriages and admire the grand mansions adorning the narrow cobbled streets of the island. You can visit Spetses during September, when “ Armata ”, a truly impressive re-enactment of a naval battle takes place ever since 1931. If you are a sports lover, you definitely don’t want to miss the unique athletic events organised every year in April “Spetsathlon” and October “Spetses Mini Marathon” , where thousands of participants take place. Spetsathlon , the biggest triathlon in Greece, receives athletes from every corner of Greece and the world who enjoy the Swimming, Biking and Running races. On the other hand, Spetses Mini Marathon gathers athletes and visitors that enjoy running and swimming races for the young at heart!

Sightseeing on the Island

The rich history and naval tradition of the island is reflected on numerous sites that are definitely worth visiting:

• The House of Bouboulina

Built around the end of the 17th Century, the building is shaped like a Π, a detail which at that time indicated the importance of the owner. Bouboulina was a heroine that played a significant role in the 1821 War of Independence. Visit her house, which now operates as a museum to admire its wood-carved Florentine ceiling, 18th and 19th century furniture, interesting collection of old weapons, fine porcelain and rare books.

• The House of Hatzigiannis Mexis

Today the house hosts a museum exhibiting relics from the War of Independence, letters written by war heroes like Kolokotronis and Athanasios Diakos, a folk art collection and the relics of Bouboulina. The house was built between 1795 and 1798, and was donated to the Greek state in 1938 by the heirs of the Mexis family. The objects on display represent more than 4,000 years of the island’s history.

• Church of Panayia Armata

This rural church was built between 1824 and 1830 to honour the victory of the Greek warriors against the Ottoman fleet.

• Cathedral of Ayios Nikolaos

The island’s Cathedral is of great historical importance as it was here where the island’s Independence flag was raised on 3rd April 1821. It was also here where the dead body of Paul Bonaparte, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte who came to Greece to fight on the side of Greeks, was kept in a barrel of rum for three whole years!

Other sites worth a visit are: the War Memorial of the Spetses Navy, the Clock in Rologioú Square, and the Anargyreios Korgialeneios School. Situated in the area of Kounoupitsa, today it houses the Centre of Environmental Education.

Head to the island’s sun-drenched beaches and swim in blue waters with a beautiful pine-forest as backdrop:

• Ayioi Anargyroi: One of the largest beaches on the southwest of the island with clean and deep waters. It offers also water sport facilities. • Ayia Paraskevi: A sandy beach situated on the west part of the island, 12 km away from Dápia. It took its name from the near-by chapel of Ayia Paraskevi. Water sport facilities are also available. • Ayia Marina: 2 km south-east of Dapia, this is the most famous beach of the island! Sandy, organized with many beach bars, and restaurants. Sun lovers as well as water sport funs arrive here either by boat or by bus. • Xylokériza : A secluded beach 8 km from Dapia, on the south-eastern part of the island, mainly accessible by boat. • Vréllos : A beautiful sandy beach on the west part of the island. Surrounded by a dense pine forest, it’s no wonder it is called “Paradise”. The beach is also an ideal starting point for following a beautiful walking route towards Profitis Elias, the highest spot of the island. • Zogeriá : With pine trees that stretch down to the beach and azure waters, the locals consider it the most beautiful beach on the island. Weather permitting, you can enjoy a breathtaking view all the way to Nafplio!

Yacht Charter Spetses

aegean yachting Spetses

Spetses stands proudly just a few kilometres from the mainland Peloponnese, but there is a stronger sense of carefree island Greece here than in other Saronic Gulf destinations. The lively, historic old town is the only village on the island; the rest, ringed by a simple road, is rolling hills and crystal clear coves. Relaxed-feeling Spetses has much to offer and gorgeous swimming spots.

Bustling Spetses Town stretches along a meandering waterfront encompassing several quays and beaches. Passing the church of Moni Agios Nikolaos you arrive at the attractive Old Harbour, and the interesting Baltiza yacht anchorage and boatbuilding area.

Spetses is probably the best-known of the Argo-Saronic islands, largely thanks to John Fowles, who lived here in the early 1950s and used the place, thinly disguised as Phraxos, as the setting for his cult novel The Magus. A popular, upmarket escape for Athenians, the island had a brief vogue as a package destination but never really developed the mass infrastructure – or the convenient beaches – to match. Today, the town of Spetses is the biggest among the Saronic islands, spreading for several kilometres along the northeast coast, but new development is mainly second homes and small apartments and villas; the rest of the island is almost entirely uninhabited, with pine forest inland and numerous excellent small beaches around the coast.

The specific geographical coordinates  37°15’48.4″N 23°07’56.2″E  in Aegean Sea. As mentioned above the island of Spetses is located in Saronic Gulf among other islands like Poros, Aegina, Salamina. The population of the main settlement on Spetses is about  4000 inhabitants and the total area of  27,121 square kilometres.

private yacht charter spetses

Spetses is an affluent island and a municipality in the Islands regional unit, Attica, Greece. It is sometimes included as one of the Saronic Islands. In ancient times, it was known as Pityoussa, and later as Petses. The island is now an independent municipality, with no internal boundaries within the municipality. The town of Spetses is the only large settlement on the island. Also part of the Municipality of Spetses are the islands of Spetsopoula, Falkonera, and Velopoula (all uninhabited).

An unusual aspect of Spetses is the absence of private automobiles in the town limits. The most common modes of transport are walking, horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles. Only taxis and delivery vehicles are allowed in the downtown area.

What to see in spetses island, greece on a private yacht charter.

Written by Missy Johnston

Spetses, Greek Islands, Greece

Spetses, Greece

A stop at Spetses Island, Greece in the Saronic Islands during an Athens-to-Athens luxury yacht charter offers so much to see and do. The fascinating history and sheer beauty of the place are an alluring attraction, while the many cafes and markets provide a fun change of pace.

Dock in the center of town at Clock Square to soak up the classic Greek architecture, food, and wealthy resort culture the area is known for. This is a well-to-do island, where mansions, resort hotels, and even prestigious, private 20th-century boarding schools look perfectly in place next to the white sand beaches and lovely palm trees.

Greece, Spetses Island Main Port

While much can be said about the gorgeous scenic backdrop of Spetses Island and its surrounding waters, what truly sets this island apart is the traditional means of transportation. There is no airport that brings tourists to the island, so you’ll be in good company among the yachters who visit the island by sea. Once on land, enjoy a wonderful Spetses tradition; the horse and carriage. It’s a delight to hire a horse and carriage for transport to any of the island attractions. Walking on foot and riding a bicycle are also options, of course, but the horse and carriage is a Spetses what Spetses is known for and sets this island apart..

Spetses, while an upper-level island economically, is still very traditional with open air fish markets and little shops in the town square. At the harbor, watch traditional boat builders assembling old-fashioned wooden boats by hand, just as they did in the 18th century.

Local Fish Market , Spetses, Greece

History buffs will love the Museum of Spetses and the monastery of St. Nicholas. The latter is the site of the famous “Freedom or Death Oath” that locals took before they joined the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Ten years later, in 1831, Spetses Island became home to refugee fighters from Crete who came fleeing persecution from the Turks.

As St. Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, his monastery holds special significance for every sailor, so plan to stop in, but if you do, be prepared to adhere to the dress code for respect that requires long pants and shirts that cover the shoulders. Spetses is a terrific island to include on a Greek Saronic Island itinerary.

What You need to Know for your Cruise

Going sailing definitely is very different to when you go on holidays ashore, a mix of adventure, luxury, tranquility and excitement which can appeal to one and all!

Sailing trips are different to any other type of holiday for a number of reasons, one of the most important ones is lack of limitless space on board! The other one is that while sailing, you may end up sweating during the daytime, but feel chilly when night falls. With this in mind we present the ideal packing list for your sailing holiday so you will enjoy every moment on board and get the most out of your yachting adventure with Aegean Sea Cruises!

Essentials: Start planning your packing by selecting the right luggage! When you come on board don’t pack excessively. A duffle bag or even a back pack should be more than enough for a week’s sailing. Any hard-cased suitcase is difficult for your skipper to bring it on board and will fill up space in your cabin that you wish you had available for yourself!

For both men & women the necessary clothing you should consider bringing is:

Ladies particulars:  A couple of strap tops, few vest tops, and 5-6 t-shirts will be enough for a week. A pair of denim shorts, a couple of dresses for a night-out and underwear will be the utmost essentials for a lady on a yacht! Sandals since you’re sailing Greece are also a must!

Men particulars:  Guys, this is mostly so you don’t forget the important stuff! So, a couple of jeans or linen trousers along with a couple of shirts will be enough for looking like a yachtie when ashore! Apart from swimsuits, flip-flops, jacket and sunnies, a pair of closed shoes will be fine for when you’re about to go for a stroll & don’t forget your undies & a belt!

  • 2 or more swimsuits - Flip-Flops or Light Summer Shoes definitely for when being around the sea water
  • If you have boat shoes bring them, if not then a pair of sneakers will do the job getting you around in the rough paths of the Greek Islands.
  • A baseball cup will protect you from the hot sun and a pair of sunglasses is essential to keep your eyes protected.
  • 2-3 shorts for the 2-4 Days Cruise should be more than enough and a T-Shirt for each day will do the job for the days we sail.
  • A long-sleeve shirt will help you if you need to cover up from the sun & a light jacket for the nights when the breeze brings temperature down is a must.
  • Toiletries for everyone should be kept to the minimum necessary stuff and any kind of cream, lotion, sun-screen etc

The percentage for the A.P.A. is between 30 – 35% of the base charter fee for motor yachts. Any amount not used will be refunded at the end of the charter. If the A.P.A. exceeds the collected A.P.A., it is the Charterer’s responsibility to settle all accounts before disembarkation.

You may incur relocation fees if your desired yacht must be brought to a port different from where it is normally situated.

  • There may be Value Added Tax (VAT) in addition to the charter fee and APA, depending on the location of the charter.

12. Do I need insurance?

We recommend that you protect your vacation investment against various possible losses over which you have no control by purchasing travel protection . We will provide travel protection quotes based on the households on the charter and each person’s date of birth. It is necessary to send us this information.

Please Note: To be eligible for the waiver of pre-existing medical condition exclusion, the protection plan must be purchased within 15 days (Travel Basic) or 21 days (Travel Select) from when you make your initial trip deposit. However, the plan can be purchased any time before departure.

The product descriptions are only summaries and may be changed without notice. The full coverage terms and details, including limitations and exclusions, are contained in the insurance policy.

13. What is Charterer’s liability insurance?

A type of marine insurance designed to cover the liabilities, including those of care, custody, and control (CCC) assumed by a party chartering a vessel when the vessel’s operation remains in the control of the vessel’s owner.

14. Who needs the charterer’s liability?

Everyone who charters a boat.

Because yachts do not (usually) cover the liability of a charterer or guests, the yacht’s insurance covers the liability of the owner and crew. Still, if a charterer causes damage to the yacht or a third party, the vessel’s policy does not protect the charterer’s assets.

We recommend speaking to your insurance Broker to determine if your existing insurance policies provide liability coverage when chartering a yacht.

Requesting a copy of the yacht’s insurance policy to determine if liability coverage extends to the charterer.

15. Why should I consider Charterer’s liability insurance?

When chartering a yacht, it is essential to know that boats do not (usually) cover the liability of a charterer or his/her guests. The yacht’s insurance covers the liability of the owner and crew. Suppose a charterer causes damage to the boat or a third party. In that case, the vessel’s policy does not protect the charterer’s assets, and damages for which the charterer is responsible are not limited. Despite what the charter contract says, a charter’s financial responsibility is NOT limited by the terms of the agreement.

A charter contract does NOT prevent insurance companies or third parties from exercising their rights against the charterer. The charterer can either answer the suits personally or purchase a Charterer’s Liability policy.

Can I be added to the vessel’s insurance as an additional insured?

The answer is, more than likely, no. There could be a cost to add you to the yacht’s policy. And you, the charterer, would “share” the liability limit with the vessel’s owner.

How can I protect myself while on the charter?

You may purchase Charterer’s Liability insurance, which covers the legal liability of charterers and guests during the charter. We recommend you consult a marine insurance specialist for this specialized form of insurance.

16. How does the yacht charter booking process work?

After discussing your vacation plans with us, we will present you with the boat options based on your dates, yacht charter destination, type of boat, and size for your group. We will answer all of your questions. After you have selected your boat, the next steps follow accordingly.

There are a few essential steps to take in preparing for your yacht charter. We will guide you through completing your preference forms, and you’ll even speak to the yacht crew before your departure.

Complete Your Dosskit Preference Form

  • As part of your booking process, we will email you the Preference Forms (DossKit) link for your careful completion.
  • This form will have your food, drink, activity, passport information, shoe size, food intolerances, and allergy information. Your crew needs to know what is important to you and as much information as possible to begin planning your menu and itinerary.
  • Before you arrive at your yacht, the crew will contact you to discuss your vacation plans and the preferences detailed on the Preference Form.
  • Once onboard your yacht, the captain will conduct an orientation and safety briefing before departing on your vacation. During the cruise, it is critical to communicate with the captain and crew with any questions or requests. They are available and will assist you with arrangements.

18. Will there be any pre-communication with the crew?

  • If, after completing your preference sheet, you decide there is something more the crew might need to know (special occasions, changes in activities), contact CKIM Group, and we will be happy to communicate your needs to the yacht crew.
  • As noted, your captain and/or chef will contact you before arrival to discuss your preferences and vacation plans.
  • Your captain’s primary role is the safety of guests, crew, and the yacht; he will always consider this.
  • The chefs and crews on board your luxury yacht charter want nothing more than for your dream vacation to become a reality. They will work very hard to ensure your needs and expectations are met.
  • You can also indicate what type of activities you wish to enjoy. Don’t be shy–the more detail and information you include, the better.
  • Are you hoping to rest and rejuvenate?
  • Try a new water sport?
  • Explore a new area?

Pre-Communication of Dietary Needs to the Chef

  • The captain and chef use the Dosskit (Preference Form) as a vital tool to plan and prepare for your vacation. Include and review any dietary restrictions or favorites you may have.
  • One of the many benefits of a luxury yacht charter is having a chef. Based on your dietary needs, be it gluten-free, plant-based, low-carb, or anything else, the chef will plan meals to your liking based on your requests.
  • If there is a particular brand or label of the food, wine, or liquor you like while on your charter, the Preference Form is your chance to specify those wishes.

19. What Should I Pack?

  • Your cruising area will largely determine the type of clothing you want to bring due to the various climates. For instance, cruising through New England, you may need a sweater or windbreaker as the evening can be crisp. If you’re traveling through the Caribbean, the temperature can be warm year-round, but ladies might especially appreciate a wrap or shawl, as the evening breeze can be fantastic.
  • Regardless of your cruising area, resort casual is usually the comfortable attire unless you have planned a formal evening with the crew or on-shore dining.
  • Bathing suits, shorts, and casual beach attire are undoubtedly the order of the day on deck. Wear aquatic shoes for beach combing. Finally, guarding against the sun is vital. So, pack caps or wide-brimmed hats and loose-fitting cotton cover-ups.

Travel Trip Information will be provided on your personalized Axus App and will be available to download by all guests.

  • Your trip details and information, including sample packing lists, will be available on your Axus Travel App .

Your professional crew is proactive and will handle all your luxury yacht charter details. You can relax and unwind. The chef will plan each meal based on your specific preferences.

Yacht charter

First time charting a private yacht (with captain n hostess) for one week out of Athens. Questions: 1. In order of priority which islands/cities do I visit? 2. Continuation from 1. What two things do we do in each place. 3. This is a bucket list trip and at 80 we hope it goes well. 4. Thanks in advance for all suggestions here. Everything is appreciated

What you will visit will actually be mostly at the discretion of the Captain. Het will be able to tell you which places you can actually reach given the time you have and the weather that is expected. Het will probably be quite knowledgeable, and be able to suggest you what to see on the islands you visit.

With only a week, the logical choices are those islands closest to Athens/Piraeus, such as Aegina, Spetses and Hydra. How many you are able to visit in a week will depend a lot on the weather, the type of yacht (power vs. wind) and how well you travel at sea. I hope your experience meets all your expectations!

Jim if you sail out of the Athens port of Pireaus, you'll be very limited in the isles you can v isit - especially the ones everyone wants - the "white houses/blue shutters" look of Cyclades, because they' are just too far to sail to, You're better off landing in Athens & taking domestic flight direct to a Cyclades island like Paros, where many charter operations start. I've done 13 trips to greece, but all my sailing has been on ferries, but I planned a vey successful charter-yacht week's sail for my neighbor. Some observations:

• TIMING - If you want it to go well, book between mid-may & late June. After that, the Meltemi winds GREATLY affect sailing except for large boats. Smaller yachts can be forced to skip isles they planned on, and/or even be trapped in harbors for days by rough water. You can't defy mother nature.

• VESSELS - here's a link to the outfit we booked Sailing out of PAROS - https://www.archipelclub.com/en/catamaran-charter-greece/punch-41.php -- everything worked out perfectly. My friend & her brother each had a cabin -- they just had a skipper, who did a lot of the cooking, I think this size yacht has quarters to accommodate a 2nd crew member. There is another Cycladic charter group out of SYROS but it may not have the best size vessels.

You asked “which island?” and “what to do?” but you didn't specified your budget or what time of year you are planning this trip and if it could also be a sailboat or a catamaran

Know that for a private trip (only you and the crew) the minimum rates in summer are generally from €3,500 per week for a 40 ft vessel with 4 cabins (2 cabins are for the hostess and the skipper)

This amount is only for hiring the boat itself, you will have to add the price for a professional skipper (around 200€/day), the hostess (around 150€/day), port taxes, final cleaning, food, drinks , gas for cooking, fuel for a week, etc.

Basically around 400€ / day in addition to the boat rental.

Many of these offers depart from an island like the link to "Archipel" proposed by janet which leaves from Paros

There are also some possibilities from Alimos Marina south of Athens such as Cavos Yachting:

To everyone that replied I’m so happy to see the responses. I wish I would have jumped on here before. There is a tremendous wealth of information. This is our first yacht charter and I guess the decision was based on the excitement. I’m excited to take my wife here and experience this. I think, from the replies, we will keep our desired interests close to where we board the yacht. The biggest point I got outta the replies is the sailing from place to place is going to be the biggest time grabber so we should make the most of that travel time and just enjoy what we have. I’m going to look into boarding the yacht in another location to try to maximize or time. Keep the replies coming. We don’t board until June 2024 -Jim

Oh. Does this mean you already have chartered a vessel, before doing research on what is feasible, and how long the distances are etc? Research is boring, but it does make a big difference in success. Y ou say keep it coming, but how/why do we do this, with no data? Y ou need to tell us where your charter begins, at what exact dates, and what stops they suggest in this 1 week.
