Two new vessels — a luxury yacht and a tall ship — hope to get noticed along St. Petersburg's waterfront

  • Waveney Ann Moore Former Times Reporter

ST. PETERSBURG — Sweeping vistas of waterways edged with miles of public parkland and bustling sidewalks helped entice the owner of a charter yacht company to set course for St. Petersburg.

"St. Pete has grown so much and is so vibrant compared to 25 years ago," said Capt. Steven Siegel, who steers the 128-foot luxury yacht Sir Winston and is a graduate of Lakewood High School.

That's why he convinced his boss to make port in St. Petersburg.

"We see an opportunity to both serve the area and have a nice big yacht here," Siegel said.

So far, the benefits haven't been quite what had been hoped for. Neither the Sir Winston nor the tall ship Lynx is as visible along the city's waterfront as the vessels' owners would like.

Tucked away at the city's downtown port, the Sir Winston sits largely out of sight to the clientele the company seeks for its excursions into Tampa Bay, $100-a-head weddings and corporate events.

Last week, the four-deck, 128-foot yacht ferried dozens of the nation's mayors on a breakfast sightseeing cruise. That's just one of several events the vessel has hosted since arriving in April, but Siegel wants more.

He wants better visibility for his yacht and for him that requires a berth on prime downtown waterfront, near the site of the new Pier, the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort, restaurants and museums.

Like the Sir Winston , the Lynx also seeks more exposure and would like to move from the Harborage Marina. The tall ship from Nantucket is a replica of an 1812 Baltimore Clipper schooner that took part in the War of 1812. Built in 2001, it's now a floating museum that offers educational programs and hosts events.

The Lynx and its supporters are asking for $65,000 in city funds so it can dock in the North Yacht Basin next to the recently launched Cross Bay Ferry. The city money, which would be used for permits, a gangway, sidewalks and fencing, would be matched by local businesses. A floating dock from Harborage Marina will be refurbished by Marinetek and a power pedestal from E&P Industries will provide power to the tall ship.

St. Petersburg City Council member Ed Montanari took the request for funds to his colleagues last week. If approved, it could also mean good news for the Sir Winston . Siegel hopes to get to share the tall ship's floating dock. For now, the yacht sails into the North Yacht Basin to pick up passengers.

A recent trial run that had it dock beside the St. Petersburg Museum of History displeased a descendant of W. L. Straub, who bought the Tampa Bay Times back when it was called the St. Petersburg Times in 1901 and pushed to preserve the city's waterfront for public use. Now North and South Straub Park are named for him.

"I was shocked to learn that the Sir Winston dinner cruise ship (a for-profit dinner cruise ship) had a 'test' dock this past week right in front of our museum …," Lucas DeVicente wrote in a letter to Mayor Rick Kriesman and the City Council.

"As you can see in the attached photos, it is essentially a wall that blocks our magnificent views of the waterfront and downtown. My great-great grandfather Straub fought to protect the waterfront and its views accessible to all, and to have a dedicated port for ships like this. It would be much better off at the Port of St. Petersburg," wrote DeVicente, who also is vice president of the museum's executive committee.

Siegel said the Sir Winston is just looking for a good port to call home.

"We were over there at the request of the city to stop at different locations to see where would be a viable location …where the vessel would fit," Siegel said. "We want nothing but to be a good partner with the city."

Besides a lack of visibility at the city's port, Siegel also said it's difficult for passengers to get on and off at that point. On Monday, Siegel had to help a Times reporter to step down into the 370-passenger yacht and climb up to disembark.

It's unclear how the Lynx , the Cross Bay Ferry — a pilot project connecting downtown St. Petersburg to downtown Tampa — and the Sir Winston will fit into the city's new Pier District plans.

"We are very excited with the interest and the activities that these vessels bring to downtown St. Pete," said Alan DeLisle, the city's development administrator.

"We have not figured it out yet. We are exploring all the options with how this will work with all the vessels. At the same time, the decision about locating the vessels will require Council approval and Army Corps of Engineers approval."

Meanwhile, the city is asking for input from residents about what they want at the municipal marina, which encompasses the North, Central and South yacht basins. A draft of a master plan is expected to be finished in early in 2017. The multimillion-dollar renovation will begin in the Central Basin — its facilities were built in 1963 and are the oldest — and will allow the marina to accommodate larger, more modern boats, said marina and port manager Walter Miller.

The goal is to begin construction in the summer of 2019, he said. The Pier District is expected to be complete by late 2018. Whether the Central Yacht Basin will be a viable place for vessels like the Lynx and the Sir Winston is not yet known. But the Sir Winston, which relocated from Fort Lauderdale, definitely wants a permanent home.

"We are exploring a lot of different ideas," DeLisle said. "We had to get the ferry in place and we did. We're working on the Lynx now."

CHAPTER FIVE

Commodore’s log.

Hello Friends.....I am happy to report that interest in our Club is at an all-time high. Many of our events sell out quickly. Participation in our Clubs Within a Club (special interests groups) is booming. Wine S ociety membership is fully subscribed. Availability of parking can be sometimes challenging and allthough the ability of our kitchen facilities to serve our growing membership is being tested, many other aspects are operating at full throttle.

Your Board of Directors wants to deliver the highest possible level of membership experience to our members. To address these capacity issues, the Board has recently made some important decisions. A target membership number has been established and a waiting list for new memberships will be instituted. Initiation fees for new members have been increased as well. In an attempt to provide adequate parking for our members, the amount of parking resources allocated to nonmember functions is being monitored and controlled. The House and Grounds Committee has recommended that an automated entry gate system be installed in the parking garage in order to discourage unauthorized non- member parking. The new gate system is scheduled to be installed this month. You will be receiving more information on the new gate system via emails in the upcoming weeks. Please be on the lookout for this information. Due to the logistics of distributing access devices to our members, the system will not be fully operational until sometime this summer. We are hopeful that the result will bring greater availability of parking for our membership.

February was a busy month for our Club. The St. Petersburg Motor Classic was a smashing success and the weather cooperated. Congratulations, and thank you, to Andy Evans and his committee for organizing this event. The Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series was reported to be the largest regatta ever for this Series. Thousands of sailors descended upon our Club and had a great time on and off the water.

I hope you got a chance to see our youth sailors in action in the Valentine’s Day Regatta. Seeing all of those boats on the water is a special experience. March will also be an exciting month with the Grand Prix Celebrations, March 3rd - 5th including hosting the Green Flag Lunch, Adobe Road Wine Event and our SOLD OUT Garage Party. The Pennington Cup is scheduled for March 4th. On March 20th, the big race to Pensacola Yacht Club will be held. And don’t forget the Annual Yachting Recognition Awards program on April 4th.

Stay tuned for more information regarding the dock replacement project as well as information on progress made by the Master Facilities Planning Committee. Hope to see you around the Club.

General Manager’s Log

Wow – what a month we just had! February was packed with great events starting with the St. Petersburg Motor Classic, the Women’s Club Fashion Show with our own Jason Hooper as one of the models, then the Valentine's Day Regatta, followed by the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series. The entire team here at the Club did an outstanding job, kudos to you all. Let’s not forget the dedicated and always willing number of volunteers that gave up their time to help in any way around the Club. Everyone’s hard work truly paid off as all events were very successful! As we continue to see our numbers rise and overall usage is up Club wide, we must keep in mind our rules that have been put in place for the enjoyment of all members.

Our Guest Policy states that a guest can be accompanied by a member. Below is the Guest Policy of the Club:

• No individual who is eligible for membership shall be brought to the Club as a guest more than twice in any one month or 12 times a year.

• Guest Cards for invited guests of the Club (i.e., regatta participants) shall be secured at the Front Desk before guests may use the facilities of the Club.

• Members introducing guests and visitors in the Club will be considered responsible for their conduct while in the Clubhouse and for any debts their guests may incur.

yacht 50m prix

• The privileges of guests may be withdrawn at any time by any Flag Officer or by Management.

yacht 50m prix

Another area that needs clarification is our Service Dog Guidelines and dogs at the Club in general:

• Service dogs must be registered in the administrative offices of the General Manager or Membership Director – Tuesday through Friday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

• Service dogs are not allowed to be at the bar counter at any time.

• Service Dogs should remain on the floor at all times.

• Service dogs are not to be fed in the Club and the Club does not provide food or water for the dog.

• Guests and staff are not allowed to pet dogs.

• Dogs are to be on a leash at all times on Club property and control is to be maintained.

• Service dogs, once registered, will be noted on member’s account.

• Pets who are not service dogs are allowed on the patio of the Heritage Lounge only, and on the patio of the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse.

We as a Club are privileged to have reciprocity with many other Yacht Clubs across the U.S. and abroad and if you haven’t taken advantage of this distinct privilege, I recommend that you do. Please reach out to our Membership department for a Letter of Introduction. In addition, for those of you that are not aware we have an Alliance Program with the St. Petersburg Country Club. SPYC members may play golf or tennis at the SPCC once per month at a discounted rate. A Letter of Introduction is not required. Dining and Clubhouse privileges are also available. SPYC members will need to contact the SPCC directly for Tee & Tennis times or wishing to make dinner reservations.

Thank You to one of our Past Commodores' for their gracious $1,200 capital contribution donation. This really shows what this Club really means to so many. In closing, we have come a long way in a short period of time. We have a long journey ahead but with steadfast vision and great leadership all that we are about to endure with be worth it in the end. I look forward to seeing everyone around one of our various facilities!

V alentine's Day Opti Regatta

yacht 50m prix

Over the weekend of February 11-12 SPYC hosted its annual Valentine’s Day Opti Regatta with 306 competitors coming from all corners of the USA as well as Puerto Rico and Brazil. SPYC was well represented with 23 sailors competing between the Gold and Silver Fleet’s. Sailors were greeted on Saturday to a building pre-frontal southerly breeze that topped out at 18-22 knots on the gold fleet course and 14-16 knots on the silver fleet courses. Conditions were challenging but the young sailors did a great job managing the big waves and breeze.

On the 240 boat Gold Fleet course Beck Brill from the Coral Reef Yacht Club was crowned the overall champion for the 2nd year in a row. The top female finisher was Minx Anthony and the top SPYC finisher was Finn Cox in 28th overall. On the 66 boat Silver Fleet course Woods Morehead from Lake Forest, Illinois was crowned the overall champion. The top female in Silver Fleet was Sylvia DeAndre from the Coconut Grove Sailing Club. Our top SPYC performer was Adeline Dozark in 23rd overall.

A big thanks goes out to all our volunteers who made this event run incredibly smooth. Between two race courses on the water and all the shoreside roles, over 100 volunteers are needed to make this event happen. We are lucky at SPYC to have such an awesome team to run these events!

Helly Hansen Sailing 2023 World Regatta Series

yacht 50m prix

The Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series took place February 17th - 19th. Three epic days of sailing! Nearly 275 teams from over 14 different classes of boats, all racing on five courses throughout Tampa Bay. Competitive racing and fun social activities were the themes of the weekend. Friday morning started off with a light south eastly, building throughout the day. Perfect way to kickstart an amazing weekend of racing across all the courses!

Chilly temperatures and a beautiful breeze greeted sailors Saturday morning; the small craft advisory did not deter the fleets from hitting the racecourses. Four additional races were completed on most courses throughout the day: for a total of eight races throughout the weekend. Tight racing amongst the fleets made for exciting finishes.

Sunday’s forecast called for a lot of sunshine and light winds. No additional races were completed. Eight races were completed over the weekend. This event would not have been possible without our amazing team of member volunteers and our staff. THANK YOU!

The 2023 St. Petersburg Motor Classic

yacht 50m prix

It was just that… Classic!

What a fabulous show, the best-organized show I've ever been to, a family-friendly show, amazing feel, perfect weather, great food, and quality at every turn. These are just a few of the accolades we've received regarding this year's show, and they keep coming in. It goes without saying that we thank all those involved, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, our dedicated, hard-working committee, over 70 volunteers, sponsors new and old, and of course, the massive flow of spectators.

We cannot accurately convey how many thousands of hours go into putting on a show like this and that time is given freely by all to help us help our charities and the community. Early Sunday morning South Straub Park was set up, and we opened the show to the public at 10 am after parking over 250 cars, boats, and motorcycles. The weather cooperated with a cloudless, sunny day that couldn't have been better. We presented over 60 quality crystal awards on time to a grateful crowd.

This was one of the best shows on the West Coast of Florida, reflecting well on SPYC and what the City of St. Petersburg offers. We have yet to finalize our accounts but are hopeful that we will be able to double what we donated to charity last year.

Thank you all. Now we begin planning our 2024 show.

Our Volunteers: Stewart Ahman, Linda Albreacht, Jack Albrecht, Janet Anderson, John Arsenault, Donna Bauer, George Baulig, Mike Baulig, Jeanie Bicknell, Steve Bicknell, Susan Boles, Peter Brine, Debbie Cannon, Gary Cannon, Fred Cotsakis, Mike Culotta, Tyler Culotta, Gloria Davis, Harry DiOrio, Peg DiOrio, John Deermont, Tom Donalson, Gerry Douglas, Gregg Dunay, Andy Evans, Ashley Ferrer, Kevin Gardei, Deborah Giaquinto, Meg Gimmi, Mark (Gino) Ginocchio, Joe Hartman, Debbie Heston, Lori Hodges, Jack Howard, Joe Hynes, Jackie Jensen, Larry Jensen, Pat Kaufman, Denis Koelsch, Mike Laky, Mary Lavash-Ahman, Tracy Livingston, Eunice Livingston, Mike Lizotte, Patty Lizotte, Mike Mathis, Emmett McCabe, Judy McFadden, Bob Miller, Tommy Mitman, Derek Moss, Darcy Mullins, Bob Oakley, Gayle Perera, Raul Perera, Joanne Pihlkar, John Provosoli, Jim Rillings, Bill Robbins, David Shirey, Darby Siviter, Erica Smith, John Smith, Shane Smith, David Witty, Bob Roche, Jerry Workman, Marilyn Hartman. We couldn’t have done it without everyone of you.

As the 16th bonded winery in Napa, Freemark Abbey is a “First Growth” of Napa Valley. Founded in 1886, the only winery selected to submit both a red (Cabernet) and white (Chardonnay) in the 1976 Judgement of Paris, it specializes in Cabernet Sauvignon. We will also taste their SB, CH and Merlot.

SALTY Sisters

On Friday, January 27th, 25 Salty Sisters boarded the Cross Bay Ferry in St. Petersburg for a speedy 50-minute trip to Tampa. A walk along the Riverwalk brought us to the Columbia Cafe where we had a fabulous lunch. Jim Hannigan, of Clearwater Yacht Club, popped in to treat us all with Captain Morgan Gasparilla swag bags, definitely a big hit. After lots of laughs and giggles, we strolled the Riverwalk and headed back for our return trip to St. Pete. A good time was had by all. Thanks to KT Trudeau, our “Cruise Director” for planning this fun trip!

BROAD REACHERS

It’s been a quiet month for sailing for the Broad Reachers!! The lack of wind, too much wind, or extremely chilly temperatures have kept the girls off the water. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate in the months to come for our upcoming FWSA Interclub, Captain’s Race, our annual Sail to Hotel Zamora for lunch, and maybe a trip out to Sand Key.

Back in November, we sent two sailors to the FWSA Championship down in Sarasota to sail in 420’s. We’re proud to announce that Marti Cochran and Dee Gill, sailing for the Broad Reachers in the non-spin category, finished in second place. They had 1719k winds gusting to the mid-20’s. Marti said they were in survival mode. Three boats did capsize and one boat never left the shore.

yacht 50m prix

January weather was not kind to the Salty Sisters for Sailing. Co-Captain Valerie Massengill tried for several weeks to get some practice and racing in for the Annual Maggie Mug in Ideals. The first Wednesday, Valerie reported that six Ideals left the dock and eventually made their way out to the bay only to be abandoned due to 1.1 knot winds. The following two Wednesdays, there was no wind or too much wind, so many sailors practiced handling spinnakers at the dock. Other education classes were held in lieu of sailing and the various classes included race committee, tactics, some basic rules, and learning flags. The classes were taught by PC Sherrie Welch, PC Kathy Ahern, PC Gina Bowden-Pierce and Helle Getz. The last week PC Barbara Watson finishing up by teaching a wonderful knot tying class.

On Wednesday, January 18th, the Broads hosted the FWSA General Meeting with 72 participants from nine other Clubs. Broad Reacher 1st Delegate, Gloria Davis and her volunteers did a marvelous job planning and preparing for the meeting.

yacht 50m prix

Valerie Massingill and Katie Rodgers handled the registration, Joanne Simmons along with Carroll McClain (Mainsheet Mamas) handled the re-gifting table (all proceeds going to the FWSA Young Woman’s Sailing Award), and Marti Cochran with Susanne Boohar handled the raffle tickets. Guest Speaker Dr. Scott Rubin DC, DACBSP, talked about things we can do to maintain and heal our bodies.

Come join us for Saturday morning for some fun sailing and racing. You can participate as a sailor, race committee, or safety ashore. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen at [email protected].

RIDERS CLUB

yacht 50m prix

Early February offered up a couple of great weather days for riding. It sure beats the weather up north this time of the year. During the first week in February, six riders headed north through Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando Counties on a route that utilized back country roads once we got out of congested areas, winding our way to Brooksville. Our route took us north along Veterans Highway, then east to Zephyrhills and north to Dade City.

Then west to Brooksville thru farm country with plenty of new leaves just starting to bud. After lunch at Florida Country Kitchen, we headed south into Pinellas County, again taking several local roads and finding a few roads that we hadn’t traveled before. Once we got to Clearwater, we picked up US 19 south back to St. Petersburg. The following week 5 riders met at the rest area on I-275 south. We then headed south to Manatee County, east into Hardee County toward Bowling Green, then south toward Wauchula, before heading to Zolfo Springs for lunch at El Mezquite restaurant, where we enjoyed great Mexican food.

yacht 50m prix

Again, we utilized county and local roads whenever possible and really saw a lot of wide-open country. After lunch we headed north into Polk County along more county roads toward Fort Meade, then west to Fort Lonesome. After a short break we continued west into Hillsborough County to Sun City Center, then on to Ruskin and US 41, back to I-275 north into St. Petersburg.

CRUISERS...Let's Rally & Roll

This is an update of the epic trips of 2022. Last year, Howie & Barbara Mednick probably spent more time traveling in the RV than they spent at home. They have a 40’ Seneca Prestige, Super C, and are usually hauling a 24’ trailer with one of their vintage cars as they like to attend vintage auto club events.

yacht 50m prix

Last April, they headed out west to St. George Utah, hauling their 1950 Mercury for such an event. Afterwards, to Las Vegas staying at a nice RV park right on the strip (Las Vegas Oasis RV Park). After returning home, next was on to Lexington, KY for the Kentucky Derby—just another item on Howie’s bucket list. With great Derby seats, and their fill of mint juleps, they had so much fun they are planning to attend again this year.

yacht 50m prix

Next, it’s north to Chicago for Howie’s 57th high school reunion, then on to Mackinaw City, WI and subsequently South Haven, MI. This was a great area for picking fruit (blueberries, peaches, raspberries and blackberries). A side trip to Mears, MI, to enjoy a dune buggy adventure at the incredible Silver Lake Sand Dunes on Lake Michigan. Even their dog Ipo got geared up with his goggles and seat belt for this adventure. Afterwards a stop in Pigeon Forge

Last October it was to Biloxi, Mississippi for Cruisin’ the Coast Vintage Car event. In November, back to Pigeon Forge for a Freightliner rally, and after Christmas to South Carolina for New Year’s. Now they are planning a new year all over again with more fun and travel!

Upcoming Events:

• Passport Club March 2nd – Our own Larry & Joy Wissing will be “Reliving the Expedition” presenting their RV trip along the Lewis & Clark Trail

• RV Land Cruisers Meet-up, March 9th -12th - Join us for our Spring Fling, March 9th-12th at Keystone Heights RV Resort. For those going to the FMCA International Convention, this can be our “pre-rally”.

• FMCA’s 106th International Convention & RV Expo March 15th - 18th – the RV travel club, Family Motor Coach Association, are holding the 106th Expo in Perry, Georgia.

The mission of the Passport Club is to share travel experiences, plans, and bucket lists for travel domestic or international; by land, sea or air; self-drive or sit back and let others do the work.

March 2nd: Larry and Joy Wissing, Lewis and Clark Trail – Undaunted Courage. Share the 47day tour with the Wissing’s and about twenty other RV’ers along the historic trail. The original Lewis and Clark round trip pushed, pulled and portaged boats and canoes up against and sometimes down the Mighty (muddy) Missouri river. 30 members, embarked on May 14, 1804; the expedition crossed the Continental Divide of the Americas near the Lemhi Pass, eventually coming to the Columbia River, and the Pacific Ocean in 1805. The return voyage began on March 23, 1806 and ended on September 23, 1806. Only one member of the original expedition died of appendicitis early on in the trip; all 29 members returned to their homes after the grueling 2-year trek. How did the Wissing’s do? Attend the March 2nd presentation to find out!

April 6, 2023: Dr. John Lenhart, When Putin was a Friend of St. Petersburg College -- Dr. John Lenhart will share experiences as part of an educational exchange delegation in 2003 commemorating the centennial of St. Petersburg, Florida with St. Petersburg, Russia. Along with the joys of shooting shotguns there is that basic need all serious hobbyists need to manage. Where do you keep all your stuff? For most of us, it’s tucked into a corner of a closet. In sport shooting, as it is with other hobbies, it starts out simple then grows, sometimes out of control. Without a good measure of selfcontrol, whether true or forced upon you, it can get unwieldly.

yacht 50m prix

For most of us we start off with one gun. With that one gun you need shotgun shells. Shells come 25 to a box. For each of our weekly shoots, you need 4 boxes. Buying 100 shells every week turns out to be a lot of trips to the store. Nobody wants to hunt down shells every week, so we buy in bulk. A case has 250. Four cases are a thousand which is about right. Sometimes there’s a good bargain and you haul home 10 cases. All those shells go in a closet, next to your gun. You also have a day bag to carry your weekly 100 shells and other necessities: a few gun parts, ear plugs, eye protection, shooting vest, gloves and a tool or two. Everything is ready, all of it in your day bag, to go out the door. You put that bag in the closet next to your gun and that supply of shells. When you return home, you need stuff to clean the gun: cleaning solvents, gun oil, gun grease, rags, rods with brushes to scrub the barrel and to push a rag soaked with solvent through the gun barrel. You also need little brushes to clean the other parts of your gun and the special tools to take the gun apart. You might also have a silicone matt to protect the dining room table. You keep all this cleaning stuff in a tackle-box-looking thing. You also have that extra stuff that came with your gun, spare parts. Those parts you’ll never use. They go in the tackle box looking thing too. The tackle box looking thing is stored in the closet next to your gun, your cases of shells and your shooting bag. This is the simple one-gun case which would be the beginner or that rare shooting enthusiast with self-control. However, most of us are not happy with just one gun.

When self-control goes out the door, another gun comes in. This second gun is usually of a different gauge. It’s frequently a 20 gauge to go along with the first gun which is most often a 12 gauge. Since you can’t use a 12 gauge shell in a 20 gauge gun, you need a thousand 20 gauge shells too. The second gun could be a 28 gauge or a 410 or a different style of shotgun. There are single shot, pump, semi-automatic and double barrel (both side by side and over under) types. Most of us have multiple second guns. All your guns pile up in the closet with the particular essentials that are needed with each gun. If you also hunt game that closet is asked to swallow even more stuff. Those 1000s of target shells already in the closet, filled with smaller target-size-lead pellets, do not work for most hunting needs. Wild game shooting generally needs shells with bigger lead pellets. Shells for migratory birds, geese and ducks, are even more different. They must be shot with non-toxic pellets. In the closet you’ll need additional lead shells with game-sized-lead pellets and migratory bird shells with steel pellets. And there’s hunting clothing side too: camouflaged vests and hats with a splash of high visibility orange, brush pants, boots and waders to handle the wilds of hunting grounds. You might even need to add a camouflaged hunting gun or two so the birds won’t see you or your gun.

It's usually not long before the closet runs out of space and either the shooting stuff or the vacuum cleaner needs to go. I have never heard of a case where the vacuum cleaner did not rule the closet. Then again, a dose of self-control could have maintained harmony in the closet. Like minded SPYC members wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Grand Marshall Frank Robinson at: [email protected].

CRUISING FLEET

yacht 50m prix

Our January cruise-in was fun-filled and productive. Port Directors, Tom and Faye Turke, were on hand to greet cruisers as they arrived Thursday along with a schedule of weekend activities. On Friday we met at the Gosling’s rum tent before enjoying the St. Pete Boat Show followed by an Italian-themed dinner at the Club. Saturday started off with vessel safety checks by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Cruisers were then entertained as Rob & Michele Matthes christened their beautiful new boat 'TALOS'. Joe Petrella narrated the ceremony while Rob & Michele, in full pirate attire, poured copious amounts of champagne into the water to bid favor from various gods of wind and sea. Fortunately, there was plenty of champagne to share with us mortal attendees as well!

yacht 50m prix

The weekend was capped off with the Blessing of the Fleet on Sunday morning. Boats passed astern of Commodore Smith’s 'Legacy' to receive their blessing from Rev. Brandon Peete, as Flag Officers and others looked on. Thanks to Ray and Charlotte Noyes aboard 'Bitter Sweet' for assistance in directing the 30 boats blessed. With the latest boat show gear, safety checks, christenings, and blessings, we are truly prepared for 2023 cruising!

yacht 50m prix

The Day Trippers gathered at the new Doc Ford’s Jungle Terrace in late January for a fun afternoon. Though many planned to travel by boat, cold weather and low winter tides had everyone opting for iron dinghies. Whatever the mode of transportation, we always enjoy amazing water views, good food and a beverage or two with great friends!

Our February 2nd dinner featured representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Sector St. Petersburg, Search and Rescue Unit. A very interesting presentation on Command Center operations was followed by an interactive Q&A session with the three-member team. Our March 2nd luncheon will feature local authors discussing the history of some of our cruising grounds around Terra Ceia Island. March also includes a cruising swap with Naples YC, a Tampa Bay Lightning game excursion, and the Tall Ships event. Boaters wishing to volunteer as escort vessels during the Tall Ships Parade, please contact me at [email protected]

St Petersburg City Council Unanimously Extends Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg Agreement Through 2026

Grand Prix Will Return to Its Traditional March Date in 2022

ST PETERSBURG, Fla. (June 9, 2021) – The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will remain a cornerstone event on the downtown streets and waterfront through at least 2026. St. Petersburg City Council unanimously approved a two-year extension to the existing agreement with Green Savoree St. Petersburg, LLC (GSSP) on June 3rd.

This spring break racing tradition has been a marquee event on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES’ annual calendar for the past 17 years. The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg brings worldwide exposure and spectators from across the globe to the City of St. Petersburg.

“I am thrilled that the Grand Prix will be in the Sunshine City through 2026. I want to thank City Council for recognizing the importance of this race in St. Pete,” said St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman. “I also want to thank Kim (Green) and Kevin (Savoree), and everyone at the Grand Prix for not only organizing and promoting one of our city’s best events year after year, but for their dedication to our community.”

Set to return to its traditional position on the calendar during the second weekend of March in 2022, the dates for the next five Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg races are:

March 10-13, 2022 March 9-12, 2023 March 7-10, 2024 March 6-9, 2025 March 12-15, 2026

“There is no better backdrop than downtown St. Petersburg and its picturesque waterfront for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg to showcase the NTT INDYCAR SERIES,” said Kim Green, co-owner, chairman and CEO of GSSP. “The success and continued growth of the event has only been possible with the overwhelming support and collaboration with the City of St. Petersburg’s Councillors, Mayor Kriseman and his fantastic team.”

The City of St. Petersburg’s “Embrace the Race” campaign has worked alongside local businesses to create a great experience for visitors. The efforts multiply the economic impact which the race has on St. Petersburg and local surrounding communities each year.

The event has also had an ongoing impact on the local community through fundraising efforts for the Police Athletic League of St. Petersburg. Over a four-year span via the MBA 5K Run on the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Track, over $216,000 has been raised for the Police Athletic League and American Stage Theatre. The 5K run and walk event is planned to return in 2022 after being put on pause for 2021.

The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is run on a 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary waterfront circuit that includes a combination of adjacent downtown streets circling Pioneer Park, The Mahaffey Theater, the Salvador Dali Museum and extending onto the runways of Albert Whitted Airport. The set up and tear down process has become more efficient each year. Most recently it took 25 days to construct the circuit and the removal was done within six days thanks to the support of local vendors like Stepp’s Towing and the development of a collaborated plan with the City of St. Petersburg’s administration and events team.
