One of the world's most exclusive superyachts has berthed in the Northland port of Ōpua for a two-week stay.

The 80-metre Artefact is owned by Canadian tech entrepreneur Mike Lazaridis, best known for creating the BlackBerry mobile device.

Built in Germany in 2020 at an estimated cost of $240 million and named Motor Yacht of the Year in 2021, Artefact is one of the world's biggest superyachts by volume.

It is also believed to be the biggest motor yacht ever to visit the Bay of Islands.

The vessel arrived just after 1pm on Tuesday and was piloted to Ōpua wharf by the harbourmaster vessel Waikare.

Artefact is expected to stay in the Bay of Islands until 1 January.

It boasts a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system, a range of 5300 nautical miles and a crew of 17, including two chefs and a sous chef.

The vessel is notable for the sheer amount of glass used on the passenger decks - 70 tons of glass went into its construction - and interior features such as a high-ceilinged tai chi room designed so that practitioners of the martial art can hold a sword above their heads.

Lazaridis, 62, was born in Turkey to Greek parents, who moved to Canada when he was a child.

At the age of 12 he won a prize for reading every science book in the library at Windsor, his home town in Ontario.

After founding BlackBerry he went on specialise in quantum computing. He has donated large sums of money to theoretical physics research.

When Lazaridis was nominated as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2014, he was described as the father of what later became known as the smartphone.

It was not known if he was on board when Artefact docked on Tuesday afternoon.

Irwin Wilson, commercial manager of port authority Far North Holdings, said the visit of the "magnificent" vessel was a sign of the Bay of Islands' post-Covid recovery and a bumper season on the water.

Artefact was joined in the bay on Tuesday by the boutique cruise ship Crystal Symphony, one of a record 93 cruise ships expected this season.

Though many more small cruise ships were calling in this year, the number of passengers would also be a record as long as there were no cancellations due to weather or other factors this year.

The season would ramp up after 18 January with three ships on one day on 31 January. The biggest ship, Ovation of the Seas with 4180 passengers, was due back on 12 February.

Wilson said cruise ships played an important role in the economy of the Bay of Islands, and Northland, because they brought "fresh money" into the region rather than just the money locals recycled among themselves.

With each passenger spending on average $180 on shore, that added up to $23m this season, he said.

The Best Superyacht Marinas In New Zealand For Yacht Crew

superyacht in opua

The island nation of New Zealand – also known by the Maori name Aotearoa – is a major yachting destination in the South Pacific. Read on to discover the best superyacht marinas in New Zealand and what they have on offer for captains and crew…

superyacht in opua

Cruising grounds feature scenic Sounds, hidden coves and majestic fjords, while the shores are enriched with indigenous cultural sites, volcanic landscapes and a renowned winemaking industry. The country has also become a refit destination for superyachts departing the tropics and looking for a safe haven during cyclone season. Here is our list of the best superyacht marinas in New Zealand for visiting crew.

Bay of Islands Marina, Opua

Of the four marinas covered in this report, the Bay of Islands received the most superyachts in the past year. Visitors included 35 metre Life of Riley , 33.53 metre Intrinsic and 30 metre Mahalo , but the marina has a capacity for yachts as large as 120 metres.

Bay of Islands is located in Opua, to the far north of New Zealand, and is a common point of entry for foreign-flagged vessels. “Bay of Islands is a beautiful part of the world” describes the captain of 36.88 metre motor yacht Dardanella , which has cruised extensively around the South Pacific. The region is characterised by azure waters and 144 pristine islands, with its cruising grounds playing the designated host of the thrilling New Zealand Millennium Cup regatta held every spring.

Yacht Services

Refitting services are available at the Opua Marine Hub, offering 50 specialist businesses on-site together with a couple of well-reputed chandleries. Duthie Lidgard of Catalano Shipping Services notes that there is “plenty” of crew accommodation in the area, ranging from motels and hotels to rental houses. Other amenities alongside the 400 berths include three-phase power, water and pump-out facilities, and waste collection, with security-controlled access to the marina.

Crew Activities & Hotspots

Opua is quaint, so the main hangouts for crew in the town are the Opua Cruising club and Marina Café. Dardanella’s captain advises exploring further afield on days off, visiting places like the “old, traditional town of Russell” with a meal at the historical Duke of Marlborough pub. Another popular crew hangout in the Bay of Islands is Charlotte’s Kitchen in Phalia.

Nature and outdoor activities are the main attractions for crew during downtime in the Bay of Islands. Lidgard recommends exploring the “walks, bike tracks, and waterfalls” of the surrounding islands. The New Zealand tourist board has reported sightings of marine wildlife including dolphins and whales, making it a good place for snorkelling, plus culture vultures will have an opportunity to learn about Maori history at the local treaty grounds.

Port Nikau, Whangārei

Whangārei is another yachting hotspot on the north island with a strong tradition of boat building and shipping. Port Nikau Wharf opened in the area recently and is still undergoing works for further expansion. Nonetheless, it has already hosted sizeable superyachts including 81 metre Sea Eagle II , 60 metre Odyssey , 54 metre Latitude and 45 metre Imagine . Karma Butler of local superyacht agents UrbanSea says that “ Crew love it here as the city centre is five minutes up the road and there is a very laid back feel, with beaches and forests so close.”

Superyachts up to 90 metres can be hosted at Port Nikau, with b erthage supported by a marine fuel stop, a boat ramp, power and water.  The marina also boasts over 5,000 square metres of wharf space for refits and servicing. By 2023, Port Nikau will offer three piers dedicating to hosting 120 recreation vessels in total, serviced by a new 560 tonne travel lift, making it one of the best marinas for superyachts to visit in New Zealand.

Port Nikau is also the headquarters of UrbanSea , which will be able to assist crew with airport pickups, accommodation arrangements, provisioning and more. Their most popular serviced crew houses include cottages on 30 First Avenue and 36 Mill Road.

For days off or evenings out, “the loop” – a 4km walkway around the town basin – has numerous restaurants and cafes, as well as galleries like the the Hundertwasser Art Centre, on offer. The UrbanSea team recommend the waterside eateries of The Quay Kitchen, Going Loco, The Butter Factory, Kafé, No.8 Whangarei and Split as the top places for crew to hang out.

For taking time off the vessel, the region has tropical beaches, world-class golf courses and lush forest for nature lovers to enjoy. Sporty crew can organise a trip of paint-balling or mountain biking with local company Heads Up Adventures, or for a more relaxed weekend away, UrbanSea suggest overnighting at the “Eco-Glamping” Marua Retreat in rural Northland, which happens to be owned by a former captain. Venturing further afield, crew can explore the impressive dive sites of the Poor Knights Islands – followed by a stop at nearby Schnappa Rock restaurant.

Orams marine .

Located in the Wynyard Quarter of Auckland, Orams Marine serves as the gateway to the Hauraki Gulf cruising grounds. Regatta-winning vessels like Janice of Wyoming, Ravenger and Miss Silver have all berthed at this marina, which can accommodate superyachts up to 90 metres LOA.

Viaduct Harbour Makes Orams Marine a great Superyacht Marina in New Zealand for crew

The marina provides services like customs clearance, provisioning and logistics. Following a recent renovation, extensive refit facilities on site now include 60 metre boat sheds, a 600 tonne slipway and an 820 tonne travel lift – which is now the largest in the southern hemisphere.

At Orams Marine, the city is right on your doorstep. The captain of Dardanella cites the nearby Viaduct Harbour and Ponsonby areas as popular with crew. His favourite hangouts include roof-top bar Carousel and craft beer bar Hoppers , while Orams Marine recommends that crew sample some of the 60 rums on offer at the aptly named Captain’s Bar in the Park Hyatt hotel. On a sunny morning, crew can walk 20 minutes from the marina to the Buoy café on Westhaven Promenade, popular with both locals and yachties. Dardanella’s captain notes that AirBnB’s organised privately are the most common form of crew accommodation in the city, but visiting crew can obtain an Orams Crew Card for discounts on restaurants, gyms and more across the city during their stay.

For crew looking to get out of town on days off, Dardanella’s captain recommends catching waves in Piha, taking a tour around Waiheke Island, indulging in a shopping spree at the Matakana Sunday markets or tackling the three-hour mountain bike trail to geothermal hotspot Rotorua.

Picton Marina

The Marlborough Sounds are an extensive network of charming waterways on the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. Visitors are drawn to the tranquil cruising grounds as well as the vineyards on shore, which are famed for producing the country’s top Sauvignon Blanc wines. Here the marinas are often smaller, as Dardanella’s captain explains that boats passing through are more likely to drop anchor in sheltered bays then heading into a port. “Picton is beautiful. You’ve got the vineyards, you’ve got the Sounds. It’s really picturesque,” he notes.

Picton Marina is one of the best superyacht marinas in new zealand for crew to explore

Picton Marina is one of the larger marinas in the Marlborough Sounds. It is only 10 minutes away from the local airport and can accommodate yachts up to and over 35 metres LOA. Services encompass electricity, water, laundry, fuel, waste disposal and 24 hour security. Hotels, motels and rental apartments provide crew accommodation close to the marina. In the last year, superyachts including 34.14 metre Integrity , 40.16 metre Mahoenui and 32 metre Duchessa I all berthed in Picton.

Crew Activities & Hot Spots

The town’s tourist board recommends Seumus’ Irish Bar and the Thirsty Pig as two pubs close to the waterfront with a lively atmosphere for crew to enjoy on a night off, complete with live music and sports screenings. A delicacy in the surrounding area is green-lipped mussels, which are best enjoyed at the Mussel Pot Café in nearby Havelock harbour.

For activities on crew days off, the 73.5km Queen Charlotte track is a main attraction in the Marlborough Sounds. This scenic route winds through the native Bush and offers hiking and biking with stunning vistas of the waters. Fishing, dolphin watching and kayaking in the Queen Charlotte track are other activities recommended by the local tourist boards, making this another one of the great superyacht marinas in New Zealand for crew to visit.

World's largest aluminium yacht, Sea Eagle, in Ōpua

You can see the three carbon masts from just about anywhere in Ōpua, especially at night when they are all lit up. It's been said that at nearly 70 metres they are tall enough to just scrape through the tall Bridge of the Americas on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal.

The masts belong on Sea Eagle II, the world's largest aluminium yacht that is sitting alongside Ōpua Wharf. She is on her maiden voyage and is at the wharf for the duration of crew quarantine, before going to Whangārei.

She is registered in Georgetown, Guyana, and reportedly belongs to Taiwanese billionaire businessman and philanthropist Samuel Yen-Liang Yin. He is chairman of Taiwan's Ruentex Group and has stakes in Sun Art Retail Group, a leading hypermarket operator in China.

It's a long way up. Sea Eagle II's near 70-metre masts. She dwarfs the Ōpua Wharf. Photo / Far North Holdings Limited

Sea Eagle II is by any measure head-turning. She is 81 metres long, with a width of just 12.4 metres (to aid sailing ability). She has a sweeping 3500sq m of sail. The sail area is controlled by 34 winches from a sailing system integrator.

She was designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and built by Dutch company Royal Huisman, who reportedly described her as the most sophisticated yacht they'd built in their 137-year history. There is a Sea Eagle I, built for the same owner, but this vessel eclipses the first one in length by 36.5m.

The interior has Alpiwalnut wall panels, wenge timber trim and natural oak floors - and according to one report, the owner's collection of modern art "adds splashes of colour". There are handrails across the cabin, wrapped in leather as a design motif, and because the space is used to host business meetings there is copious seating. There's a 16-place dining table for formal occasions.

She can accommodate 12 guests in six spacious cabins including the owner's VIP suite, and the cabin interior has handrails wrapped in leather as a design motif. Photo / Far North Holdings Limited

She can accommodate up to 12 guests in six spacious cabins including the owner's VIP suite. There is a half-raised bridge for inside steering. The flybridge offers full controls during sailing and the area has seating for guests plus, as you'd expect, room for "sunbathing opportunities".

She has two skippers and both call Russell home when their peripatetic lifestyle allows. Max Cumming is a well-seasoned superyacht skipper who spends his time circumnavigating the globe. He wrote the book, Senses, about his time onboard the superyacht of the same name owned at the time by Sir Douglas Myers and his wife Barbara.

The other skipper is Tod Thompson, who had a big hand in Sea Eagle's design. He's the owner's representative on board as well as the skipper.

Paying homage to Tod Thompson, Sea Eagle II meets R. Tucker Thompson in the channel heading towards Ōpua Wharf. Photo / Far North Holdings Limited

As she sailed towards Ōpua, Sea Eagle II was met by the traditional schooner, R. Tucker Thompson, which was built by Tod's father and eponymously named. After Tucker's death the ship was completed by Tod and Russell Harris, who owned her in a partnership with Greta Simmonds.

Paying homage to Tod by sailing together down the channel towards Ōpua Wharf, Sea Eagle II made the R. Tucker Thompson look like a gaff-rigged dinghy, which she most certainly is not. It's just that Sea Eagle II is so much more of just about everything.

Cycling in Opua

Opua Marina, New Zealand’s first port of call

Anyone visiting Opua will spend time down at the marina. Opua Marina is a beautiful place to sit and forget about life, the marina is also the hub for departing cruises, day trips and sailing excursions through the 144 islands that litter the Bay of Islands. Regardless of your sailing experience, Opua offers the opportunity to get out into the Bay of Islands and really explore. There are boats for hire, (with captains), as well as organised excursions in sail schooners, taking advantage of the world famous fishing of the Bay of Islands. The islands of the Bay are a holiday adventurers dream. Most are completely uninhabited, and almost all are littered with hidden beaches, where you can cast anchor, throw down a towel and spend the day basking in the sunshine, with the sand between your toes, and not another soul around. Few places can offer you your own choice of private beach every day for the duration of your holiday…the Bay of Islands is one!

Opua – Hidden Gem of the Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is not just famous for its coastline; it also known for the beautiful inland scenery. Opua is an idyllic spot from which to walk, exploring the rain forests of the Harrison Scenic Reserve, or the coastal curiosities found along the Coastal Walking Path, which runs from Opua around the bay to Paihia and beyond. The walk to Paihia, which takes around 2 hours, is beautiful when the sun is shining, with a couple of idyllic spots from which to swim in the glistening sea. The 6km walk is a real treat, and, once in Paihia, there are plenty of ways to get home again if you don’t wish to repeat the trip on foot! Paihia is the Bay of Islands activity centre. Of you are staying in the peace and beauty of Opua, the short trip to Paihia provides plentiful opportunities for game fishing, swimming with dolphins or any number of weird and wonderful water sports – if you wish.

After a day exploring the coast or delving deep into the rain forest, Opua is the perfect place to let the evening slip away. The town centres around the marina, where there is a fantastic seafront restaurant, where you can sip local wines and indulge in the freshest seafood, watching the light changing across the endless scenery of the Bay of Islands. A more picturesque evening could not be imagined than those of Opua.

New Zealand's Top 10 Marinas

Dockside in the land of the white cloud

Annette Tuncel checks out some of the best marina facilities for those cruising or planning a charter across the Tasman Sea.

New Zealand is an island nation, a nation of people who go to sea with enthusiasm and passion, whether it be in a small runabout, as sailors on their own yachts or as crew on superyachts scattered around the world. It is also a nation blessed with a picturesque landscape and many sheltered bays and harbours, often within relatively short distances. A variety of marinas provide shelter and services in many of the main coastal towns of the North Island and in the north of the South Island.

Opua Marina, Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is one of the best cruising grounds in New Zealand and Opua is the main port of entry for New Zealand. The quarantine arrival dock forms the outer floating pontoon of the Opua Marina. * 235 berths 10.5-27 metres with water and power * Car parking * Pump-out facilities * Toilets and showers * Laundry * Security gates, patrols * Fuel pontoon * General store, café, restaurant, five minute walk * Live aboard * Haul-out ‘ Ashby’s Boatyard, two-minute walk * Chandlery and Maintenance services, two-minute walk * Opua Cruising Club next door. The Cruising Club has a well-deserved reputation for hospitality towards visiting yachties. The new clubrooms provide a gathering place to chat over a cup of coffee or tea and the local sailors welcome visitors to join in with whatever activities are happening either during the evenings or race events. * VHF 12 www.opuamarina.co.nz

‘The current can sometimes be quite strong through the marina. I found it easier to move or get fuel when the tide was slack,’ commented Ron, a visiting South African yachtie.

There are some interesting walking tracks near the marina.

If staying for some time then a car would be useful for shopping at the supermarkets in Paihia or Kerikeri.

Whangarei Marina, Whangarei

The Whangarei (Town Basin) marina is located in the centre of Whangarei, 19km inside the harbour. Brian Caulton, manager of the marina, advises yachts to ‘travel up river on a rising tide as there are a couple of shallow areas upriver from Kissing Point’. * 48 finger berths – 14 and 16m with power and water, key access to two pontoons * 198 pile moorings, some available for multihulls * Approx 20 berths alongside a pontoon (up to 20m vessels) * Toilets and showers * Laundry * Chandlery nearby * Restaurants, cafes within the Town Basin * Town CBD, supermarket, five-minute walk * Live aboard * Haul-out and hardstand facilities down river * VHF 64 www.whangareimarina.com

Whangarei has a well-established and extensive boat-building, repair and maintenance industry.

Based on our experience in the marina over the past five years, I offer the following points:

* The marina is well protected from weather.

* Cars are parked in public car parking areas around the marina.

* While the marina is in the centre of town, there are some enjoyable walking tracks through bush a few minutes away.

Gulf Harbour Marina, Whangaparaoa Peninsula, northern outskirts of Auckland

Gulf Harbour Marina is situated on the edge of the Hauraki Gulf with beautiful anchorages close by. There is clear water within the marina and, with a solid breakwater, complete shelter from all weather directions. * 1036 berths, for vessels up to 55m and 4m draft * Power and water * Laundry * Toilet and shower * 24hr security including CCTV cameras and patrols * Secure car parking * Fuel facilities * Pump-out facilities * Live aboard * Wireless internet hotspot * Licensed café * Yacht club – full bar and restaurant facilities * Golf club adjacent * Haul-out ‘ 110 ton travel lift * Hardstand yard * Marine centre for all maintenance and repair jobs * Yacht broker * Ferry to central Auckland * Car rental * VHF 73 www.gulf-harbour.co.nz

Jim and Michele, who lived in the marina on Aqautaur for a year, made the following points: * There is little or no current and it is easy to get into and out of berths. * The main bus route is just five-minutes walk and goes regularly to Auckland and down the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. * Walks are really good, we recommend Shakespeare Park and around Army Bay.

Auckland is known as the ‘City of Sails’. With seven major marinas and thousands of yachts, there is an extensive range of repair, maintenance and provisioning businesses within the city, many concentrated in the area between Westhaven Marina and the Viaduct.

Bayswater Marina, Auckland

This is one of the city’s newest marinas located on the North Shore of Auckland.

* 415 finger berths – 10.5 – 45m, including 28 Super yacht berths 25-45m. * Power and water * Fuel Pier * Pump-out facilities * Toilets and showers * Laundry * Security CCTV and patrols, card access at pier gates * Secure car parking * Free wireless internet service at berths * Lounge facility, including TV and free internet access * Live aboard * Minor maintenance only permitted www.bayswater.co.nz

Martin and Cheryl on Seabird spent a year in the marina and had these comments: * ‘We felt we got good value for money. The marina was secure, well-maintained and run. * “There was easy access by ferry to the centre of Auckland and a bus to the shops at nearby Takapuna.”

Westhaven Marina, Auckland

Westhaven Marina, located in central Auckland, is one of the largest marinas in Australasia. * 1432 marina berths 8-30m, plus pile and swing moorings * Limited multihull berths * Power and water * Secure access to piers * Pump-out facilities * Fuel facilities * Toilets and showers * Laundry * Free internet access * Onsite café, restaurant * Live aboard ‘ foreign boats only, limited to three-month period * Haul-out and hardstand * Marine trade businesses located close by www.westhaven.co.nz

Hobson West Marina within the central Auckland viaduct is also run by Westhaven Marina. The marina caters for ocean-going superyachts, large motor launches and charter craft. * 22 berths 16-50m * Single/three-phase power and water * Pump-out at each berth * Secure car parking * Secured gate access

Viaduct Harbour Marina, Auckland CBD

Viaduct Harbour Marina is situated in the central Auckland viaduct, the scene of two America’s Cup competitions. The viaduct is surrounded by apartments, restaurants, cafes, businesses and shops of the Auckland CBD. * 50 floating berths for vessels up to 28m, * 10 side to berths for vessels up to 40m * Single and three-phase power and water * 24/7 security including CCTV and patrols * Secure access to berths * Pump-out facilities * Charter vessels * Fuel facilities at nearby Bayswater or Westhaven Marinas * Marine Trade businesses located close by www.viaduct.co.nz Tauranga Bridge Marina, Tauranga Tauranga, with its sunny climate, is another popular destination for visiting foreign yachts during the summer months. * 500 berths 10.5-37m with power and water * Limited multihull berths * 24/7 security with cameras, patrols * Fuel dock * Pump-out facility * Haul-out and hardstand ‘ 35 ton travel lift * Toilets and showers * Laundry * Café and restaurant on site * Chandlery * Internet access * Repair and maintenance facilities in the area * VHF 73 www.viaductharbourmarina.co.nz

Marina administrator Julie Bailey comments: ‘We have a lot of current flow here (our breakwater is a floating one) and we ask arriving overseas vessels to anchor out till the next slack tide, then we go out and assist them to berth with our workboat.’

Chaffers Marina, Wellington

Chaffers Marina is located in a prime position within Wellington’s inner harbour and CBD, next to Te Papa (Museum of New Zealand). * 165 floating berths 10-20m with power and water * Port of Entry at Fuel Dock * Toilets and showers * Laundry * Security patrols at night * Live aboard for short-term casual stays * Fuel facilities * Haul out – fixed travel lift for vessels up to 40 tonnes, no hardstand * Marine chandlery * Marine trades on site * Supermarket 300m * Cafes, bars, restaurants nearby [email protected]

Nelson Marina, Nelson

Nelson is located on the northern part of the South Island and is known for its sunny climate and artistic and cultural atmosphere. The marina is well-protected from surge. ‘The best time to enter the marina is in the morning before 10, as after that often a vigorous seabreeze blows,’ advised Jim and Helen from the yacht Gaia. * 515 pontoon berths 8-18m. ‘We can accommodate two or three vessels up to 22m on the ends of the pontoons, but draft is restricted to 2.5m at low water,’ commented Chris Hawkes, the marina supervisor. * 33 pole berths * Water and power ‘ no electrical heaters to be used. * Visitors are able to live aboard * Pump-out facilities * Refuelling station nearby * Haul-out and hardstand nearby * Marine trades nearby. Nelson has an established boating industry. * Commercial laundromat nearby * Cafes and bars close by * Car parking is available in public areas surrounding the marina * ‘The downtown shopping area is very convenient, a pleasant 15-minute walk on a pretty path along the river. The city is big enough for everything to be available,’ say Jim and Helen from yacht Gaia. * Security is based on liveaboards within the marina as watchkeepers www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz/sports/facilities/boating/marina/marina.htm

Who better to develop a superyacht for the next generation than an up-and-coming talent?

Hype-R showcases a sleek, minimalist exterior inspired by video game controllers and other gear. The yacht also features flowing lines and dramatic curves that evoke a sports car. “My design language is strongly influenced by car designs, particularly by the renowned masters who have made history, such as Pininfarina and Giugiaro,” Benaglia said in a statement . “Technological products also inspire my designs.”

Hype-R Superyacht Concept

With a beam of nearly 37 feet and an interior volume of 1,300 GT, Hype-R offers ample space for relaxing and entertaining onboard. The layout has been meticulously designed to ensure that each space serves a specific function, according to Benaglia. The sundeck, for instance, is dedicated to the owner and includes a suite with a plush living area and a private study for remote working at sea. In addition, the yacht is equipped with two staterooms and two VIPs that can sleep up to eight guests.

The exterior has an array of distinct zones, too. The upper deck is ripe for chilling, with a dreamy sunset lounge and romantic arches. Conversely, the modular beach area aft can be used as a cinema, a discotheque, or a tranquil lounge by the water’s edge. The aft deck is also home to a striking, asymmetrical pool that cascades over two levels and fold-out platforms that open to create more space as needed.

A superyacht for the next generation, indeed.
