Lego's video game-themed sets for adults have focused mostly on home consoles and the Super Mario universe , but its newest set is turning its eyes to the arcade era. A new 2,561-piece Lego Icons set re-creates the original Pac-Man arcade cabinet, complete with a hand crank on the side that makes Pac-Man, Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde move (along pre-determined paths) on its "screen."

The set will launch on June 4 for $270.

Further Reading

The Pac-Man set isn't a full re-creation of the 1980 original—it looks more like a half-height bartop arcade cabinet rather than one that goes all the way to the floor—but the marquee, the controls, and the decals on the sides are all dead ringers for the old bright-yellow cabinet.

Aside from its moving parts, the set has a few other special features. The coin slot lights up red when one of the buttons is pressed, and the game's score can be rotated to increase it. The large versions of Pac-Man, Blinky, and Clyde on the top can also be rotated 180 degrees, depending on whether you want the ghosts to be chasing Pac-Man or the other way around.

The back of the cabinet pulls off, revealing the set's lone minifig and a second, small-scale Pac-Man cabinet. Also note the set's clever use of gears to make the "screen" move.

Lego Pac-Man

The set uses a couple of tricks that Lego has deployed in past sets. The hand crank recalls the Lego NES set from a few years ago, which also used a crank to make its screen "move" and simulate playability (to be clear, the NES and the Pac-Man cabinet are not actually playable games). And the back of the cabinet pulls off to reveal a minifig playing a second minifig-sized game of Pac-Man, sort of like how the Lego Atari 2600 set opened up to reveal a beige 1980s living room complete with an Atari console and CRT TV.

Watch Pac-Man Get Chased by Ghosts on Lego's New Retro Arcade Cabinet

Watch pac-man get chased by ghosts on lego's new retro arcade cabinet, save up your quarters, because the lego pac-man arcade machine will set you back $270..

Following brick-built versions of the original NES game console and the iconic Atari 2600 , Lego has now recreated one of the most popular arcade games of all time with its new 2,650-piece 1980 Pac-Man arcade cabinet set. Thanks to some clever engineering, this set even finds Pac-Man getting chased around the screen by Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde.

Although 2022's Lego Atari 2600 was mostly a collectible display piece that focused on the console, a handful of game cartridges, and a few hidden Easter eggs, Lego’s Nintendo Entertainment System went above and beyond the call of duty with the inclusion of a buildable TV on which the first level of Super Mario Bros. could scroll by. For its Pac-Man arcade machine, Lego is delivering the same level of detail and interactivity, which will undoubtedly have you making that “waka waka waka” sound effect every time you play with it.

A Pac-Man Lego Set For Your Desk

A close-up of the Lego Pac-Man Arcade Machine Set's marquee featuring vintage cabinet graphics.

Although they rarely reflected the gameplay and graphics of the actual game, the cabinets that filled arcades in the ‘80s were adorned with eye-catching artwork in an attempt to convince patrons to pump them full of quarters. Lego’s Pac-Man Arcade Machine arrives at a much smaller scale than the cabinets that invaded America in 1980 (and it’s also missing its bottom half), but it features the same classic artwork on the sides and the marquee. Let’s just hope those are pre-printed and not stickers.

Inside the Lego Pac-Man Arcade Machine

A look inside the Lego Pac-Man Arcade Machine Set with the rear access panel removed.

Although Lego hasn’t gone into much detail about how the Pac-Man Arcade Machine actually works, a removable panel on the back provides a peek inside. The set appears to be a fun mix of both classic brick building and more complex Technic engineering, and while out of the box it’s powered using a hand crank on the side, the mechanism can probably be easily adapted to work with a Lego electric motor and a battery pack.

How the Pac-Man Lego Set Trades Pixels For Studs

A close-up of the Lego Pac-Man Arcade Machine Set's screen, revealing the underlying mechanisms.

Unlike Lego’s buildable Nintendo Entertainment System console from a few years ago, which used a clever rolling treadmill system to recreate the side-scrolling action of the game on a small TV, a closer look at the Pac-Man Arcade Machine’s “screen” reveals Pac-Man, Inky, Pinky, and Blinky moving around the maze using a Lego chain drive that snakes its way along a twisting path. And although Clyde appears to remain safe in the middle of the screen, we’re assuming the positions of all the characters can be easily changed.

Super-Sized Pac-Man, Blinky, and Clyde

A close-up of an included diorama featuring Pac-Man and two ghosts.

Lego’s included a few fun accessories with this set, including a display base with larger 3D versions of Pac-Man, Blinky, and Clyde. It can be mounted atop the arcade machine , but doesn’t interface with its mechanisms at all. Instead, turning a small dial on the back of this diorama spins all three characters around so that Pac-Man chases blue ghost versions of his pursuers.

A Glowing Coin Slot, But the Game’s Free to Play

A close-up of the 'Start Game' buttons and illuminated coin slot on the Lego Pac-Man Arcade Machine Set.

Pressing the ‘Start Game’ button turns on a battery-powered Lego light brick that illuminates a glowing coin slot on the front Pac-Man Arcade Machine , but it doesn’t actually accept any coins. You can play again and again and again without ever having to ask your parents for their pocket change.

Do You Know What This Pac-Man Score Means?

A close-up of the high score display on the Lego Pac-Man Arcade Machine Set.

A geared wheel allows the current score to be set to a handful of different numbers, but the machine’s high score remains permanently locked to 16,440: a number you’ll find on countless pieces of Pac-Man merchandise . Does anyone know the significance? (The perfect score for stage one of the game is 14,800.)

A Pac-Man Lego Set Hidden Inside

A close-up of a hidden Easter egg inside the Lego Pac-Man Arcade Machine Set.

Hidden inside the Pac-Man Arcade Machine , and revealed by removing its back panel, is a buildable vignette featuring a Lego minifigure playing an even smaller Pac-Man cabinet in a retro arcade setting. It’s removable, however, so you can display it outside the Pac-Man machine if you’d rather it not remain a hidden secret.

When Can You Buy the Pac-Man Lego Set?

Lego Pac-Man Arcade Is Available Now

It even comes with a smaller Pac-Man arcade that you can fit inside of it.

By Darryn Bonthuys on June 1, 2023 at 6:20AM PDT

Lego's Pac-Man Arcade, a very cool buildable replica of a countertop arcade cabinet, is now available via Lego VIP Early Access. Lego VIP is a free rewards program, so all you need to do is sign up for an account and register. The Lego Pac-Man Arcade will be available to everyone starting June 4.

Out of the box, you can use the 2,651 included pieces to construct the arcade cabinet, Pac-Man, his eternal maze, and the iconic ghosts who are always chasing him down.

Once completed, some of the features on this set include a light brick that illuminates the--thankfully non-functional--coin slot, a crank that allows you to simulate the classic gameplay and even a removable back panel that can be used to reveal the inner mechanics. As an additional and cute bonus, you can even build a mini-arcade that comes with a mini-figure and can be stored inside of the cabinet.

No Caption Provided

Pac-Man, Blinky, and Clyde form part of a miniature diorama that rests on top of the cabinet, showing off Bandai Namco's favorite mascot on the run from the ghosts. Or you can do a power pellet plot twist, and transform the ghosts into their more digestible blue forms as Pac-Man starts hunting them for a change.

If you'd prefer something more cinematic and bat-themed, Lego has you covered with its new $400 Batcave set . Based on the classic Tim Burton films and inspired by The Flash before it races into theaters, this isn't your standard batcave. Instead, this Lego set has a more compact design that can easily be displayed on a shelf and opens up to reveal the gothic design of Batman's cave from back when Michael Keaton was wearing the cape and cowl.

How PAC-MAN was inspired by the yellow color of LEGO® bricks

PAC-MAN is hands down one of the best arcade games of all time. During its production in 1979, the lead designer of the game, Toru Iwatani, wanted to create an inclusive game that appealed to everyone, everywhere.

While the game remains massively popular to this day, nothing beats the original coin-operated arcade version.

The big idea

lego pac man ghost

In the past, we’ve released LEGO sets based on retro gaming consoles, so what was next?

“We wanted to recreate the experience of the eighties and the joy that people got from the arcade games of that time,” says Sven.

“What makes PAC-MAN special was that it was the first game that didn’t include violence. A lot of the computer games back then were usually about destroying things. This is the only game that didn’t do that, so it had a much better gender split.”

While the LEGO designers stayed true to the game, some adjustments had to be made for a LEGO set.

“The original arcade cabinet is enormous with a very large base. Instead, we made a cut off version of the arcade game where the most aesthetic part is the focus and it’s still big enough to make an impact on your shelf.”

The mechanical maze

lego pac man ghost

The coolest part of the LEGO PAC-MAN set is the mechanical maze that appears to move exactly like the real game by turning a crank on the side. When turned, the characters move around the maze in a realistic way, thanks to triumphant engineering efforts.

“I would say 70% of the whole set development was devoted just to that mechanism,” explains Sven.

“We developed a new chain element so that we can just attach these little characters to the side of it. There’s a little black chain that goes around inside with several functions connected all working together.”

What’s even cooler is that you can lift off the back to expose the mechanism and see how the LEGO functions work in real time while turning the crank. Fans will also find a little surprise in the set: a mini eighties arcade scene with its own minifigure!

Eighties throwback

Back then, arcades were booming, and kids came prepared with as many coins as they could. Nostalgic features have been added to pay homage to the original arcade experience such as the illuminated coin slot.

Sven added a red light brick behind the slot, to give it a glow effect just like the arcade games had.

Plus, the red joystick moves to replicate the movements of the real game.

And speaking of the real game...

lego pac man ghost

“Playing PAC-MAN during the breaks was fun for me,” added Sven, who turned to the game as a sense of inspiration when he hit roadblocks in the design process.

The eye-popping characters

lego pac man ghost

But he wanted to incorporate bigger, brick-built versions of the characters in the set to capture fans’ attention at first glance.

“The characters in the maze are so tiny as they had to be able to turn corners, so we wanted to represent the characters in an elevated way at the top of the cabinet too.”

And they aren’t there for just decorative purposes.

lego pac man ghost

“The ghosts each had their own personalities in the game, and for this set we chose to feature figures of BLINKY and CLYDE.”

It was always meant to be

lego pac man ghost

There were conversations around what shade of yellow to use for LEGO PAC-MAN.

During collaborations with Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. (owners of PAC-MAN), Sven later found out that the yellow used on PAC-MAN was inspired by the yellow color of LEGO bricks. Seems like it was always meant to be!

“Not knowing that PAC-MAN was inspired by LEGO bricks was quite a funny situation, as we spent a lot of time wondering what shade of yellow to go for.”

So, there you have it, it was a match made in LEGO brick heaven! We hope fans love all the features of LEGO Icons PAC-MAN. Enjoy the thrill of the challenging build, and then display it at home as a reminder of simpler times and a little slice of childhood. What better way to pay tribute to an eighties icon?

The Ghosts Give Chase in this LEGO Pac-Man Automaton

Wakka Wakka Wakka, Everything is Awesome! It’s LEGO Pac-Man time! Do you love retro arcade games and LEGO bricks? Well, then, you’ll love this LEGO Pac-Man display that moves when you turn its crank.

The 1603-piece set was designed by LiteBricks and submitted to LEGO Ideas. Its modular design lets you rearrange its pieces so Pac-Man can be chased by ghosts, gobble dots, chase blue ghosts, or make a hasty escape as their eyeballs scurry home to regenerate. Or any combination thereof. The set features a mini Pac-Maze on its side, made up of 1×1 round LEGO bricks.

If you’d like to see this set go into production, you can show your support by casting a vote on LEGO Ideas . If it gets at least 10,000 votes, it’ll go to the LEGO Ideas internal committee for consideration. I’d love to see more LEGO sets inspired by classic arcade games. The plastic bricks gave us pixel art before pixel art was a thing, so it’s a natural fit.

Billund, May 22nd, 2023:  The LEGO Group and Bandai Namco are celebrating the 43rd anniversary of PAC-MAN with the reveal of the new vintage LEGO® ICONS PAC-MAN Arcade set – one of the most famous and nostalgic arcade games of all time.

Originally released on May 22, 1980, by Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. (previously Namco) in Japan, the PAC-MAN video game became a cultural icon. After 40 years of being a part of pop culture worldwide through games, TV shows, music and more, the LEGO Group has collaborated with Bandai Namco to bring the 80s classic back in brick form. This collaboration led to the unique discovery that PAC-MAN’s famous yellow colour was inspired by the LEGO Group’s signature colour.

The new LEGO set design shows an arcade version of PAC-MAN and allows you to recreate some of the legendary ghost munching moves of the game. In addition, builders can create large colourful brick versions of PAC-MAN, BLINKY and CLYDE that rotate on a base, and can be displayed on top of the cabinet or separately. Once complete – you can light up the coin-slot, plus there is a small vignette of a female minifigure playing PAC-MAN on an arcade, hidden inside of the cabinet.

Introduction: Lego PAC-man Ghost

Lego PAC-man Ghost

This is my lego PAC-man ghost. All the pic was taken by my iPod so not great quality. Hope you enjoy.

Step 1: The Body

The Body

Start with two 2x4 next to each to make a 4x4 square and make this 4 high. On the top of the stack put 4 of the Legos with the lego bit on the side, on top. So you can put the sides on.

Step 2: Side Panel

Side Panel

Make two 2x6 and on top put anther 2x6. Next to that, on the right and left put 1x6, so there is one stud off the edge of the bottom to make feet. On top of that put a 2x5 on top in the middle 1 stud from top. You need to make 3 of these.

Step 3: Face of the Ghost

Face of the Ghost

Make this from the last step but instead of putting a 2x5 on top put a 2x3. Put a 1 stud flat peace on top on the left and right. On top of them a 2x2 flat to make the eyes and a black round 1x1 on top for the eyes.

Step 4: Top

Top

Get a 2x4 flat and make plus of flats and on put a 2x2 flat on top to make the top the ghost.

Step 5: Ghost

Ghost

Put the sides on then the face and then the top.
