When ‘Boo!’ Is Only the Beginning

What does it take to scare the candy corn out of someone? Performers at two of New York’s hallowed haunted attractions explain the secrets behind the shocks.

Angie Hansen knows what she wants: energy, professionalism, a gift for ad-lib. “And then somebody that really likes to scare people,” she said cheerfully.

As the creative director of Blood Manor , a 10,000-square-foot haunted house nestled inside a TriBeCa skyscraper, Hansen assembles 60 performers annually, many of them Blood Manor veterans. She sorts the newcomers into appropriate roles — clowns, killers, corpse brides, victims weeping silicone wounds. In just three or four days of rehearsal, she teaches them to terrify the thousand or so guests who enter Blood Manor, a Halloween staple since 2005, each weekend evening.

About two hours north, at Headless Horseman in Ulster Park, N.Y., David Berman leads acting workshops for seasonal scare actors. Because it takes more than ghoulish makeup and vibrating vocal cords to make ticket holders scream.

“To just jump out of a closet and just yell, it doesn’t do anything,” Berman said.

Such haunts — the industry term for a variety of haunted attractions — became popular in the 1980s. Spencer Terry, the president of the Haunted Attractions Association , a trade group, estimates that there are about 1,800 professional haunts in the United States this year. While horror now thrives in sundry forms, these destinations offer something entirely immersive, a 360-degree experience in which audiences can star in their worst nightmares.

Even as professional attractions move toward more extreme effects — animatronic monsters, plummeting elevators, rippling walls — most still depend on the potential of the human body alone. (Well, the human body and some terrifying face painting.) “Yes, you can scare folks with jump scares, or even puffs of air,” said Beth Kattelman , a professor of performance at Ohio State University. “But what people really remember are the characters, the special things that folks do.”

Before Michael Jubie opened Headless Horseman nearly 30 years ago, he worked as a commander of a mounted police unit in Kingston, N.Y. He still projects extreme stoicism, and yet, his actors regularly frighten him. “Oh, I’ve been scared,” he said. “Oh, yes.”

In the weeks leading up to Halloween, we spoke to some of the actors of Blood Manor, amid the hustle of New York City, and Headless Horseman — which operates escape rooms, haunted houses and a very scary corn maze on 65 acres a half-hour drive from the nearest train station — about how they make those scares happen.

While some haunted houses use trained actors, most fill their ranks with enthusiastic amateurs. Before the pandemic, applicants came in for interviews and auditions. Now they typically audition remotely, scaring the camera. What makes a great haunt actor? “There has to be at least a little something off about you,” said Will Szigethy, a longtime Headless Horseman actor. But not too off. Most haunts run background checks.

Scott Taylor, a packaging engineer for Avon by day, has worked at Headless Horseman for 10 years, with nine of them spent playing a very unsettling clown. “You can tell the people whose heart is in it,” he said. “And you can tell the people that are here just for a paycheck. Those people don’t usually last very long.”

Veterans take first-timers under their wings, helping them improve their personae and teaching them to scream without shredding their throats. (The trick: Howl from the diaphragm.) Over the course of a season, newcomers will refine characters based on their environment — a morgue, a cemetery, a sideshow — finding distinctive ways to move, to scream, to wield a chain saw or an ax. They will also find their rhythms: a horror variant on comic timing, with a shriek in place of a punchline.

Shamia Diaz, a Blood Manor regular, plays the Bride, an asylum escapee. In her blood-smeared hands, the role involves a lot of shaking, a lot of screaming, a lot of encouraging attendees to read scripture from the book of Satan. “You have to find your own mojo, your own vibe,” she said. “Because once you find what works for you, you’re unstoppable.”

For Dominique Peres, who joined Headless Horseman five years ago as a painfully shy teenager, mojo meant creating a character called Jacket, an exuberant take on a psycho killer. “Jacket is crazy, has an ax, runs rampant, likes candy, likes to make friends,” she said.

Some performers specialize in jump scares, popping out from unexpected corners. Others prefer more psychological scares, sidling up to ticket holders, whispering in their ears. (Before Covid-19, some haunts allowed performers to do more than just whisper, but Blood Manor and Headless Horseman have always maintained strict no-contact policies.) Others are more versatile. Amateur psychologists, they vary the scare depending on the mood in the room.

Jose Torres, who plays Jack, Blood Manor’s masked serial killer, adjusts his attitude for each new group. “It’s just a connected energy that comes between you and the people walking through,” Torres said.

That energy, however connected, can be difficult to maintain. While a stage actor will perform once or twice per day, a haunt actor may replay the same scene 10 times an hour, for six to eight hours at a stretch. “It is physically strenuous,” said Meagan Donovan, who oversees a haunted house on the Headless Horseman property. “You’re swinging an ax around all night or just hiding in a small space, being loud.”

But the adrenaline rush of eliciting scream after scream keeps performers swinging. “It’s better than a roller coaster,” said Hansen, who spent years playing a Blood Manor victim. “It’s better than sex. It’s better than then the best meal you’ve ever had. The feeling of scaring somebody is what makes you want to do it again and again and again.”

This brand of acting rewards performers in other ways, too. Putting on the makeup and picking up a fake weapon allows them a sense of freedom and disinhibition they may not feel otherwise. “For me, the experience has been very empowering,” Diaz said.

Many also treat haunt acting as a form of stress relief. “They use it as a kind of therapy,” said Berman, who plays a gross-out character named Dewey Tewey at Headless Horseman. “You can’t, in your regular day job, tell somebody you’re going to rip their arms and legs off and toss them into the woods.”

Every so often an actor goes too far, continuing to scare a ticket holder who is obviously already petrified. But most know when to quit or even how to lend a helping, blood-covered hand, scooting people out of a room without breaking character. Besides, the best scares, many performers said, are the ones they really have to work for.

Nicole Borbone and William Burton , recent college graduates, perform a scene set in Blood Manor’s sinew-stained morgue. They begin with a jump scare, then move into a sequence in which Borbone’s corpse suddenly rises from the table and begs attendees to help her. Burton likes to lock eyes with the customers who look like they’d be tough to scare; Borbone tends to lunge for them. Usually she gets the reaction she wants.

“When I make a grown man scream and fall on his knees,” she said, “I’ve done my job.”

The 25 Best Haunted House Movies of All Time

Because ghosts and other supernatural beings need a place to rest their weary heads, too.

By Matthew Jackson | Oct 26, 2023

On the set of 'The Haunting'

The haunted house is one of horror ’s most time-honored tropes, a dark twisting of the place we call home into a maelstrom of terror and things that go bump in the night. There’s something eternal about the idea, so it’s no wonder that hundreds upon hundreds of filmmakers have channeled it for dark visions of their own. There are, of course, dozens of classics in the genre on the big-screen, but if you’re looking for the very best to dive into this Halloween season, these are the ones you definitely won’t want to miss.

1. The Uninvited (1944)

The Uninvited , a ghost story from Hollywood’s Golden Age, has pretty much everything you’d want out of a classic black-and-white horror-drama. It’s got a spooky old house, a cast of beloved character actors led by Ray Milland, a slow-burn supernatural narrative that moves at its own leisurely pace, and of course old-school ghosts . It might move a little slowly for modern audiences, but if you’re patient with it, it’s the kind of film that will wrap you up in its own creepy comforts. In 2019, Martin Scorsese named The Uninvited one of the scariest movies of all time; “the tone is very delicate, and the sense of fear is woven into the setting [and] the gentility of the characters,“ he wrote for The Daily Beast .

2. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)

If you want a haunted house story that’s not scary, and might in fact leave you buoyant with joy, look no further than this classic starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison in the title roles. A supernatural romance about a young woman and the spectral sea captain who becomes her preternatural paramour, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is both thoroughly layered with ideas and wonderfully sweet, remaining a great change of pace from the horror films where ghosts usually dwell. Bernard Herrmann, the legendary composer behind such diverse titles as Citizen Kane , Psycho , and Taxi Driver , scored The Ghost and Mrs. Muir , and considered it his best work .

3. 13 Ghosts (1960)

Legendary gimmick -happy genre director William Castle made two great haunted house films in his career, and while House on Haunted Hill (1959) is more than worth a watch, 13 Ghosts stands out now as the superior (and more overtly supernatural) picture. The story of a family that moves into a house they suddenly inherited, it’s a supernatural mystery that’s both satisfying and delightfully over-the-top, and the ghost effects (enhanced by Illusion-O, Castle’s gimmick of special glasses that allowed you to see the ghosts or avoid them at will in the theater) are still genuinely unsettling after more than 60 years.

4. The Innocents (1961)

Just like the story that inspired it, Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw , Jack Clayton’s The Innocents is a film that focuses more on the haunted houses we build in our own minds than on actual ghosts reaching out from the darkness. In that regard, it’s a tremendous showcase for Deborah Kerr in the lead role of a governess slowly losing it in a big, old, possibly haunted house. She gets wonderfully, devastatingly lost in Clayton’s Gothic atmosphere, and you will, too.  The Innocents also made Scorsese’s list of scariest movies ever, with the Oscar-winner describing it as “one of the rare pictures that does justice to Henry James. It’s beautifully crafted and acted, immaculately shot (by Freddie Francis), and very scary.“

5. The Haunting (1963)

Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House is one of the all-time great haunted house stories, and it has given us more than one great adaptation along the way. If you’re looking for the best feature film version, though, look no further than Robert Wise’s psychologically rich, unshakably tense vision from the 1960s. The horror is subtle, but the way Wise’s camera paints with light and shadows will leave you searching every corner for a spirit.  Russ Tamblyn , who plays Luke Sannerson—the heir set to inherit Hill House—in the film also appeared in one episode of Netflix's 2018 miniseries, The Haunting of Hill House .

6. The Legend of Hell House (1973)

Richard Matheson’s novel Hell House is a masterclass in pure, straightforward haunted house terror, and John Hough’s film adaptation delivers all that and more. The film follows a group of experts as they head into the title house with the goal of finding proof of the supernatural. It quickly devolves into terror as the group encounters dark image after dark image, all building toward a terrifying conclusion that’s still one of the more fascinating haunted house resolutions in the cinematic canon. More than 25 years after its original release, the film inspired the creation of the MTV horror reality series Fear .

7. House (1977)

If you’ve never seen House , Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 haunted house film, do yourself a favor and just go watch it. Right now. Don’t look up the plot, don’t watch trailers, just watch the movie and hold on for dear life. It’s been nearly 50 years since Obayashi’s film was released, and there’s still nothing else in the horror genre —or in any other genre—quite like it. It’s a dark dream full of imagery that will live in your head forever, and a singular achievement in haunted house storytelling. While House was an immediate hit in its native Japan, American audiences didn’t get a chance to witness it until more than 30 years later, when it began screening at festivals in 2009 and very quickly gained a cult following.

8. The Changeling (1980)

George C. Scott isn’t necessarily an actor you think of as an all-out horror icon, but he cemented that status for himself with a remarkable performance in this film, the story of a grieving composer who moves into a haunted house and begins to unravel a decades-old mystery. Scott is great in the central role, but it’s Peter Medak’s slow-burn horror direction, complete with antique wheelchair and menacing children’s toys, that cements this one as a haunted house classic. In order to get the details just right, screenwriters Diana Maddox and William Gray reportedly spent approximately six months poring over research for the film, including more than 700 books and close to 2000 case studies regarding parapsychological events.

9. The Shining (1980)

While technically a movie about a haunted hotel , Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining works so well in part because of the way it makes said hotel into a single-family dwelling, surrounding the Torrance trio with vastness until the building seems to swallow them all whole. Whether you consider the film a story of haunted places or a story of haunted people, Kubrick’s ability to play with our perceptions and create a sense of near-constant unease has become legendary, making The Shining one of the essential horror films in any genre. Before he took on The Shining , Kubrick was in consideration to direct The Exorcist . He turned down the gig, explaining that “I only like to develop my own stuff.” (He clearly changed his mind to adapt The Shining .)

10. Poltergeist (1982)

What’s great about Poltergeist , Tobe Hooper’s Steven Spielberg-produced classic about a family whose new house is overtaken by spirits, is just how relentless the film is. From the moment the ghostly activity starts, it never seems to stop, and it never stops escalating as the film barrels toward its conclusion. But even with that in mind, and with the loads of horror imagery packed into the film, Poltergeist never loses its prevailing sense of fun and adventure, delivering a horror classic that you can watch without fear of being bummed out by the end. Spielberg originally approached Stephen King about writing the script. “It didn’t work out because it was before the internet and we had a communication breakdown,” King told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. “I was on a ship going across the Atlantic to England. It took so long to reply that Spielberg moved on.”

11. House (1985)

Steve Miner’s House is one of those movies that walks in two worlds so deftly that it’s almost head-spinning. The film follows author Roger Cobb (William Katt), who moves into his late aunt’s house to write a book, only to discover the place is haunted. Strange events ensue that are equal parts haunting and silly, and the film somehow deftly moves into a space where it works as both an outright comedy and as a rather pointed meditation of post-Vietnam anxiety in Reagan’s America. Yes, it sounds wild—but it works. George Wendt, best known for his role as Norm Peterson on Cheers , co-stars as Roger’s neighbor Harold; John Ratzenberger, who plays Norm’s BFF Cliff Clavin, appears in 1987’s House II: The Second Story .

12. Beetlejuice (1988)

While it’s firmly rooted in dark, zany comedy and not horror, Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice remains one of the great haunted house movies thanks to its focus on the expected tropes and how they twist when the perspectives get flipped. In a strange world where ghosts have a kind of society and code all their own, it’s a film that not only shows you both sides of a haunting, but reveals all the ways that ghosts can express themselves beyond strange noises and horrifying apparitions. Thirty-five years later, it’s still a joy to watch. Reportedly, Burton’s first choice for the role of Beetlejuice was Sammy Davis Jr. It was producer David Geffen who suggested Michael Keaton.

13. Ghostwatch (1992)

Originally released as a supposedly real BBC television special, Ghostwatch is best remembered now for the sheer terror it inspired in viewers on Halloween night in 1992, but it’s so much more than that. Yes, Ghostwatch is a fascinating cultural artifact within the mockumentary subgenre. Yet it’s also a thoroughly engrossing and genuinely frightening haunted house story, the kind of thing that will have you watching it over and over again, looking for all the hidden specters. The UK’s Broadcasting Standards Council reportedly received more than 20,000 phone calls and thousands of letters—all of them angry—following the initial broadcast.

14. The Others (2001)

Rich with textural, chilling visuals and a reverence for the visual language of haunted houses, Alejandro Amenábar’s The Others is a film that will lure you into a sense of uncomfortable, unpredictable dread even if you already know its central twist. Thanks to wonderful work by a cast led by Nicole Kidman and Amenábar’s own assured direction, it’s one of those movies that casts a dark spell that feels unbreakable, from its meditations on post-war grief and trauma to its eventual ghostly revelations. In 2002, the movie made history at the Goya Awards—Spain’s version of the Oscars—where it won a total of eight awards, including Best Film. It’s the  first film  to earn Spain’s highest film honor in which not one word of Spanish is spoken.

15. Dark Water (2002)

Though he’s perhaps best known for films like Ringu , Japanese director Hideo Nakata’s true masterpiece might be this intimate little ghost story about a mother and daughter who move into an apartment with a very dark history. Full of atmospheric flourishes and foreboding, Dark Water is a masterclass in building suspense, delivering a payoff, and then keeping the scares going even after the story has seemingly resolved. Three years after the film’s release, an English language version starring Jennifer Connelly and John C. Reilly was released.

16. A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

Kim Jee-woon’s A Tale of Two Sisters is an unforgettable exercise in psychological terror for a number of reasons, but among the most striking is the way the filmmaker convinces you more than once that he’s switching genres. For a huge chunk of the runtime, the film might just be a gripping psychological drama with a few haunted house flourishes for the sake of symbolism. But by the time it’s over, and you realize it was a haunted house film all along, you realized that the ghosts of this film are all the more potent, and all the more horrifying. To this day, A Tale of Two Sisters remains the highest-grossing horror film in its native South Korea.

17. Paranormal Activity (2007)

In an age when ghost-hunting shows were growing increasingly popular, a film like Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity felt understandably inevitable, but that does nothing to diminish its impact. The setup is simple: A couple sets up cameras in their house to try and capture apparent supernatural happenings. While the found footage format is by now well-worn by many sequels and copycats, the film is still a low-fi chiller with an unforgettable ending, not to mention one of the most influential horror releases of its era. Steven Spielberg got a copy of the DVD, which he was reportedly convinced was haunted. He loved the movie, though, and the ending audiences see was suggested by the Oscar-winning director; in 2017, Peli admitted that he still prefers his original finale.

18. The Orphanage (2007)

One of the most enduring images in 21st century horror so far comes from J.A. Bayona’s The Orphanage , a haunted house narrative that features, among other things, the unforgettable specter of a little boy in a cloth mask. But that boy and that mask are only a fraction of the story. Over the course of its runtime, The Orphanage packs in loads of other scares, both otherworldly and existential, cementing its place as one of the best horror films of the last 25 years. Horror icon Guillermo del Toro makes an uncredited cameo in the film, playing a doctor.

19. Lake Mungo (2008)

A family reeling from the loss of their daughter agrees to be interviewed for a documentary exploring the possibility that their house is haunted. What happens next is one of the most remarkable horror narratives of the last 25 years. Eerie, beautiful, and full of thoughtful meditation on what we leave behind when we go, Lake Mungo is both a classic ghost story and a dazzling effort by director Joel Anderson to tell that ghost story in ways we’d never seen before. Jordan Peele considers Lake Mungo one of the scariest films he has ever seen, and used it as an inspiration in making Us (2019).

20. Sinister (2012)

We might be stretching the definition of “haunted house movie“ here a little bit, as the entity in Sinister is more demon than ghost. But director/co-writer Scott Derrickson’s film is so good that we’re ignoring that and getting right to the good stuff. Unbelievably tense and full of great, gruesome detail, Sinister is the kind of haunted house movie that will make you think twice about every corner of your own home, especially if you just moved there. And if you like found footage, the home movie segments are still chilling, even if you’ve seen them 100 times. In 2012, co-writer C. Robert Cargill told Complex how the idea for Sinister came to him from a nightmare he had after watching The Ring .

21. The Woman in Black (2012)

Built on the strong foundation that is Daniel Radcliffe ’s assured performance as a lawyer sent to a haunted house to process an estate, The Woman in Black is a film with loads of atmosphere and plenty of old-school charm. Like the ghost stories of old, it’s not afraid to take its time, but like modern ghost films it’s also willing to employ a more vicious jump scare pace to get the job done when it’s required. The result is a horror hybrid, a blend of old and new that still packs a punch. Misha Handley, the young actor who plays Radcliffe’s son Joseph in the movie, is Radcliffe’s real-life godson. The actor suggested Handley be cast in the role in order to strengthen the bond seen between father and son in the film.

“It is very hard to create that chemistry with a 4-year-old boy, who you have never met before and who is stepping onto a film set going, ‘What in the hell is all of this?’ That was one of the reasons that I suggested [director] James [Watkins] audition my real-life godson,” Radcliffe told the Associated Press.

22. The Conjuring (2013)

James Wan’s franchise-launching film is among the most successful, and most frightening , horror movies of the 2010s, and still looms large in a horror landscape that’s since moved through many sequels and spinoffs. Wan’s ability to wring maximum screams out of a good jump scare is, of course, legendary at this point. And while there’s no shortage of that kind of terror in The Conjuring , it’s the human struggle at its core that will keep you hooked. In 2021, the Rhode Island home that inspired the film hit the market for $1.2 million.

23. We Are Still Here (2015)

One of the best horror films of the 21st century so far, Ted Geoghegan’s We Are Still Here begins with a simple premise—a grieving couple moves into a cursed old house in New England—and then wrenches the absolute maximum impact from its scares. Geoghegan’s ghosts are more violent than the spectral spirits of old, but it’s not just the gore that’ll leave your jaw on the floor. There’s an unshakable eeriness here that endures long after the film’s over. The movie is packed with references to Lucio Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery (1981), which had a massive influence on Geoghegan; in addition to similar locations, many of We Are Still Here ’s characters are named after both characters and actors in the Italian horror master’s film.

24. Crimson Peak (2015)

Guillermo del Toro is one of horror’s great visual stylists, but even by his standards, Crimson Peak is truly stunning. A classic Gothic romance full of decay, sensuality, and ghosts, it’s a film that feels like stepping into another world, a meditation on certain well-worn tropes that somehow emerges as something entirely new. That’s thanks in part to the trio of stars—Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska—at its core, but the film’s sweeping, chillingly seductive energy is pure del Toro.

The film is partly inspired by a night spent at New Zealand’s supposedly haunted Waitomo Caves Hotel, when del Toro was scouting locations for the The Hobbit movies (which he was originally attached to direct). “I heard a horrible murder being committed in the room,“ del Toro told the New Zealand Herald . “I was actually terrified. I didn’t sleep at all that night. What was strange was the next morning I was not tired, but I was wired and scared. I never imagined having those fears. It was absolutely terrifying.“

25. His House (2020)

Two African refugees settle into government-provided housing in the United Kingdom, and quickly discover they’re not alone. Like so many horror films on this list, His House begins with something very straightforward, easily graspable by any audience, then evolves into something else entirely. The horror sequences, courtesy of director Remi Weekes, are some of the most harrowing in recent haunted house memory, but what sticks with you about His House is its focus on how the horror we witness shapes us, and how far we’ll go to survive—even knowing that the ghosts of our choices won’t ever leave.

The 20 best haunted house films of all time, ranked

From The Innocents to Paranormal Activity, most of these haunted house movies will have viewers leaving all their lights on at bedtime.

Georges Méliès' Le Manoir du diable (1896) deserves much reverence for its impact on scary movies over the years, and even though the silent film is only a few minutes long, The House of the Devil marks the beginning of the horror genre. Released as The Haunted Castle in the United States, Méliès' motion picture is the precursor to all haunted house movies.

Films in the following century like The Cat and the Canary (1927), The Old Dark House (1932), and Rebecca (1940) certainly presented creepy, decrepit manors, but their walls were haunted by earthly threats. However, The Uninvited (1944) creates the supernatural template by which horror films like The Haunting in Connecticut (2009), Crimson Peak (2015), and Hereditary (2018) still follow today.

Now, enjoy EW's ranking of the 20 best haunted house movies of all time.

20. The Amityville Horror (1979)

Not even Fixer Upper 's Chip and Joanna Gaines can salvage your house when its walls start bleeding. George Lutz ( James Brolin ) and his wife, Kathy ( Margot Kidder ), get the deal of a lifetime when they buy a home in the quaint, seaside town of Amityville, N.Y. — but their new digs come with a sordid history and house full of haunting horrors.

The Amityville Horror , a somewhat underrated flick, is based on the real-life Lutz's unsubstantiated claim that the house was actually haunted. The Dutch Colonial-style home still stands in Amityville, but its address has been changed from 112 Ocean Ave. to 108 Ocean in order to throw off curious tourists.

19. The Curse of the Cat People (1944)

Irena isn't Casper, but she certainly is a friendly ghost, and she still haunts her husband Oliver Reed (Kent Smith) and his new wife, Alice (Jane Randolph). However, Irena only allows Oliver and Alice's daughter, Amy (Ann Carter), to see her when the Reeds' lonely child wishes for a friend.

The film marks the first directing credit for Robert Wise (later of 1951's The Day the Earth Stood Still and 1965's The Sound of Music glory), since he was uncredited for directing additional sequences in The Magnificent Ambersons two years prior. While virtually every character — and performer — from 1942's Cat People returns, The Curse of the Cat People is, to this day, argued by most film historians as being a sequel in name only.

18. Paranormal Activity (2007)

Do not wait around for the entity haunting your house to fully possess you or your partner. Don't do it! Filmmaker Oren Peli 's supernatural take finds a young couple ( Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) haunted by an unseen force, as the audience watches the couple chronicle the ghost's movements via their home security cameras.

The movie cashed in on the found-footage phenomenon that 1999's The Blair Witch Project proved to be a potential gold mine. Paranormal Activity grossed more than $193 million worldwide, and it only cost $15,000 to produce. Steven Spielberg saw the original cut of the film prior to its release in which Katie dies, and convinced Peli to reshoot the more ominous ending where Featherston simply goes missing.

17. Beetlejuice (1988)

Barbara ( Geena Davis ) and Adam ( Alec Baldwin ) Maitland might be dead, but they don't have any intention of sharing their home with its new residents, the Deetz family — parents Delia ( Catherine O'Hara ) and Charles (Jeffrey Jones) and their goth icon daughter, Lydia ( Winona Ryder ). When the Maitlands' attempts to frighten the Deetzes away fail miserably, Barbara and Adam turn to the mysterious and mischievous Beetlejuice ( Michael Keaton ) to rid them of the living.

Keaton's portrayal as the unscrupulous "ghost with the most" garnered him a Saturn Award nomination, even though he appears on screen for less than 15 minutes, and the actor acknowledges Beetlejuice as his favorite film from his own library of work.

16. The Others (2001)

While the living and dead coexist in Beetlejuice , The Others teaches horror fans a different life lesson: Sharing isn't always the answer. Grace ( Nicole Kidman ) and her two children, Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), live together in a Gothic country house in the aftermath of World War II, but it seems increasingly likely their Bailiwick of Jersey home is haunted.

The Others offers scary movie enthusiasts one of the genre's most memorable twists, and it's unlikely the filmmakers really wanted audiences to laugh at the very last shot of the film. It's hard not to chuckle, though, and the comedic moment certainly lends itself to the storytelling. The Others also marked the final time Kidman worked with her then-husband, Tom Cruise (executive producer), prior to their divorce.

15. House on Haunted Hill (1959)

Eccentric millionaire Fredrick Loren (Vincent Price) is throwing a party, and he promises each of his guests $10,000. The catch: They have to spend the night in a haunted house and survive until morning. Filmmaker William Castle couldn't afford to pay Price the salary the actor had become accustomed to, so he offered him a percentage of the profits to land the horror movie maestro as a cast member.

House on Haunted Hill also features one of Castle's vaunted gimmicks: Emergo . When the skeleton terrorizes Mrs. Loren (Carol Ohmart) on screen, a plastic skeleton would swoop over the heads of audiences all across the country. Ever the showman, Castle wanted to give moviegoers something even better and more exciting than 3-D could ever deliver decades later.

14. Scrooge (1951)

While there have been many fine adaptations of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol , Alastair Sim's performance as the miserly, penny-pinching Ebenezer Scrooge elevates this version to must-see status. With Christmas soon approaching, Ebenezer's old friend, Jacob Marley (Michael Hordern), returns from the grave to offer Scrooge a chance at redemption through the haunting of three spirits.

Invariably and inexplicably, A Christmas Carol is absent from many best-of haunted house lists, but Dickens' tale is the preeminent example of this type of supernatural story. Now, despite the positive critical and fan response to this 1951 version, there is a famous bit of dialogue omitted from this particular film: "If I could work my will, every idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips should be boiled in his own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through his heart."

13. Poltergeist (1982)

The real estate market is always a monster, but the Freeling family lucks out and gets a good deal on a nice house. There's just one little catch: The home was built on a Native American burial ground. And those spirits are not happy about the new tenants. Poltergeist pairs two Hollywood heavyweights, with Steven Spielberg behind the story and Tobe Hooper in the director's chair — and the result is pure movie magic.

The infamous TV scene , with Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke), is well-known, but it's nothing compared to what happens to the television in the last shot of the movie. No spoilers here, but viewers are bound to roll with laughter. Drew Barrymore auditioned for Spielberg for the role of Carol Anne, but, despite not landing the part, it was her Poltergeist tryout that led to her being cast in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).

12. A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

Filmmaker Kim Jee-woon 's heartbreaking horror film gives audiences valid reasons to avoid adultery. Su-mi (Im Soo-jung) returns home from a mental facility after her mother dies, but there's a strange family dynamic between her father and stepmother, Eun-joo (Yum Jung-ah). Su-mi is also very protective of her younger sister, Su-yeon (Moon Geun-young).

The film's twist is one of those watercooler moments that rivals any horror movie ending. Without spoiling the climax, A Tale of Two Sisters uses the haunted house motif almost as a window dressing to obscure the psychological aspects at play in this immensely enthralling, supernatural flick.

11. The Conjuring (2013)

Lorraine Warren ( Vera Farmiga ) and her husband, Ed ( Patrick Wilson ), are paranormal investigators hellbent on helping the Perron family as they're haunted in their own farmhouse. The Warrens were real people who dedicated their lives to exploring the paranormal (or as some see it, duping the vulnerable), and they also investigated the real-life mystery of the Amityville house purchased by George and Kathy Lutz.

The Perrons, too, were not just characters, and The Conjuring is based on what happened to them in their Rhode Island home. The Perrons often visited the set while the film was being shot, and Farmiga and Wilson met with the Warrens to further their understanding of the characters they were portraying.

10. The Orphanage (2007)

Thomas Wolfe wrote You Can't Go Home Again , but Laura (Belén Rueda) doesn't heed the novelist's advice. Rather, Laura takes her family back to the closed orphanage she was adopted from with the hopes of reopening it to help children with disabilities. But things take a bizarre turn when her son, Simón (Roger Príncep), goes missing.

The Orphanage , which also features a cameo from producer Guillermo del Toro as the doctor attending to Laura in the emergency room, received a standing ovation when it premiered at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival . Filmmaker J. A. Bayona found inspiration for The Orphanage from watching 1961's The Innocents and 1977's Close Encounters of the Third Kind .

9. We Are Still Here (2015)

One hundred and twenty years of haunting and horror isn't going to stop Anne Sacchetti ( Barbara Crampton ) and her husband, Paul (Andrew Sensenig), from buying a rural home, but perhaps they're blinded by the death of their son, Bobby. It isn't long before the couple realizes the house is alive — and it is hungry for a blood sacrifice.

We Are Still Here is loaded with homages to other horror films, and one of the most obvious is the appearance of the home's original residents, the Dagmars. They look like the vengeful ghosts in John Carpenter 's The Fog (1980), and the stair scene is a clear nod to Nancy ( Heather Langenkamp ) trudging up the staircase in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).

8. The Haunting (1963)

Very few horror films evoke a creepier vibe than 1963's The Haunting , even with its black-and-white cinematography. Dr. John Markway (Richard Johnson) assembles a team to investigate the paranormal activity of the Hill House in Massachusetts — but escaping the haunt unscathed may prove futile.

The film is based on the 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House by author Shirley Jackson. Director Robert Wise was coming off his immense success with West Side Story (1961), which he codirected with Jerome Robbins , while another west-sider joined him for the Hill House horror: Actor Russ Tamblyn , who portrayed Riff in West Side Story , tackles the role of Luke Sanderson.

7. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)

Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) starts her life anew when she buys a cottage in a quaint, seaside village, but her house is purported to be haunted by a seaman, Capt. Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison). The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is by far the most romantic of the haunted house films, and its storytelling — rather than fright and fear — makes it one of the top supernatural tales of all time.

Natalie Wood portrays Lucy's daughter, Anna, when she's a child, and the actress shot to stardom later that same year by appearing in Miracle on 34th Street . The screenplay for The Ghost and Mrs. Muir was also adapted by Amanda Duff, and she claimed Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn were originally courted to play the lead roles.

6. Lake Mungo (2008)

Alice Palmer's (Talia Zucker) drowning isn't the end of her tragedy when it comes to her family trying to cope with their loss and move on. Instead of closure, the Palmers are plagued by unexplained sightings of Alice, and, later, an even more mysterious, bloated-faced doppelgänger emerges.

Lake Mungo is chilling from start to finish, employing a mockumentary and found-footage style of filmmaking to exude an atmosphere of realism and tension that is supremely frightening to the senses. The fun of Lake Mungo , without spoiling the film's well-executed jump scare, is its use of modern technology to frighten audiences when they least expect it.

5. Hausu (1977)

Gorgeous (Kimiko Ikegami) and her friends find themselves facing off against a haunted house that murders its victims like a serial killer straight out of a slasher film. The same studio that produced the Godzilla franchise, Toho, masterminds one of the most horrifying and disturbingly humorous psychedelic films to date.

Hausu's over-the-top subject matter isn't for everyone, but horror fans — particularly of Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992) — will find the movie resonating with them. The success of Jaws (1975) inspired Toho to make Hausu , and none of the lead actresses were trained thespians. Rather, the seven women were all models.

4. The Evil Dead (1981)

Before becoming the "this is my boomstick" housewares expert of S-Mart, Ash Williams ( Bruce Campbell ) makes the unfortunate mistake of spending his vacation in a haunted house with some friends. There, they find the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis in the cabin, also known as the Book of the Dead, and all hell breaks loose into two sequels (1987, 1992), two remakes (2013, 2023), and a TV series Ash vs Evil Dead .

If you don't know what the "tree scene" is, you'll never get that imagery out of your head after watching The Evil Dead for the first time. It's one of the most appalling and unforgettable scenes to appear in any horror film, ever. The Evil Dead was the feature film debut for both Campbell and his best friend since high school, director Sam Raimi .

3. The Uninvited (1944)

Rick (Ray Milland) and his sister Pamela (Ruth Hussey) make the spur-of-the-moment decision to buy a lovely seaside home, and, as a result, Rick meets and becomes quite taken with young Stella (Gail Russell). The Uninvited is one of the first full-length haunted house movies, making it a cornerstone model moving forward for all other films to follow.

While Martin Scorsese called it one of the scariest movies of all time , The Uninvited kindles a wonderful romance between Rick and Stella. In fact, the serenade Rick writes and plays for his love, "Stella by Starlight," was composed specifically for the movie. However, it became a sensation when lyrics were later added, and it was even performed by Frank Sinatra .

2. The Innocents (1961)

Miss Giddens ( Deborah Kerr ) is hired to be a governess for Flora (Pamela Franklin) and her older brother, Miles (Martin Stephens), once he returns from boarding school. While Giddens takes an almost instant liking to Flora, she soon fears the children's secretive bond when Miles returns. And things grow even more disconcerting when Giddens begins seeing things and hearing voices.

The film is based on Henry James' 1898 horror novella, The Turn of the Screw , and both Truman Capote and William Archibald won the Edgar Allan Poe award for their screenplay. Jack Clayton directed and produced The Innocents , and he later went on to direct Hollywood icon Robert Redford in The Great Gatsby in 1974.

1. The Changeling (1980)

It's hard to have your car break down on the side of the road and not think about The Changeling . John Russell ( George C. Scott ) watches helplessly as his wife and daughter are cut down by a tow truck in the snow. Russell moves on and buys a house once owned by the family of Senator Carmichael (Melvyn Douglas), but he soon realizes he's not as alone there as he previously felt.

The character of John Russell is a music composer, but Scott wasn't musically inclined. Even so, the actor practiced the piano pieces Russell plays so that he could actually tickle the ivories on screen. Also, the actress who portrays historical society agent Claire (Trish Van Devere) was Scott's wife in real life, and they made five feature films while they were married, as well as a made-for-TV movie and a play.

Nerdy Jobs: Meet the haunted house actors who are paid to scare the crap out of you

Ruwe_Credit Albert Lam

Fall is here; the leaves are changing color, the weather is becoming a bit brisker, and haunted attractions are gleefully frightening those looking for a good scare.

Anyone who's been to a theme park Halloween-inspired event such as Universal's Halloween Horror Nights , Knott's Scary Farm, The Queen Mary's Dark Harbor , or Kings Island's Halloween Haunt has run into more than a few ghouls, ghosts, and zombies jumping out of dark corners in hopes of making you scream. Behind the horror makeup, however, are mere mortals — professional scare actors whose jobs, come October, are to terrify.

SYFY WIRE interviewed three scare actors — Brad Ruwe, Brad Hills, and Rachel Robinson — to get a behind-the-scenes perspective of what it's like to make a living frightening other people.

GETTING STARTED IN THE SCARE BUSINESS

Becoming a scare actor isn't often the initial goal. Ruwe and Robinson — who have worked horror events over the past decade — stumbled into the profession in college when they heard that a local theme park was hiring for a Halloween horror event. Hills, who has played the ghoulish Captain at Queen Mary's Dark Harbor for eight years, entered the scare world a bit later when a bunch of actor friends pulled him in to do a one-night haunt at a private event in Los Angeles.

"I'd never worn facial prosthetics before," Hills says when recalling his first haunting gig. "I was put into a full face mask, which ended up being a good experience to prepare me for The Captain."

But no matter how one gets started in the business, being a scare actor requires a particular set of skills, not least of which is the ability to emote pure terror and transform one's body into an otherworldly, evil creature. The audition process for larger haunts reflects this, with talent direction teams asking applicants to play out spooky scenarios such as pretending they're transforming into a monster or acting as if a killer is chasing them. Different haunts may be looking for slightly different things as well.

"One of my favorite audition processes included reciting a nursery rhyme in character," Ruwe recalls. But regardless of what they're asked to do in an audition, the main component a scare actor must have is, well, the ability to scare.

How they terrify, however, can be quite different.

THE ART OF BEING SCARY

Expectations are high once the official haunting begins, and each actor often has their own preference for how they like to scare. "Personally, I've always had an affinity for playing killer clowns," Ruwe admits. "Most of my haunting career, I've played serial killer characters, though. I'm a fairly big guy who has 'resting angry face,' which translates very well into that 'I'm going to kill you' look."

Robinson usually plays some version of an evil little girl when she haunts. "I ask [guests] about my dollies' heads or tell people to tell me I'm pretty when I'm dripping blood and have boils on my face," she says. "The 'tell me I'm pretty' line has actually been the thing most people relate to me if they see me out on a normal day."

Hills' haunting process is slightly different, given that The Captain and the serial killer character he plays for Dark Horizon, Dark Harbor's sister event in Orlando, are inspired by actual people. "Some guests aren't there for the scare but for the stories," he explains. "To be able to talk about yourself, in character, both fascinates and resonates with some people. They all want to know, 'So how did you die?' Having a true backstory is far more creepy."

FRIGHTENING IS A TEAM EFFORT

When and how to frighten people is also more complicated than a layperson might think.

"You can't simply try and scare every person that walks past," Hills explains. "You need to read people, quickly figure out who the scared one is in every group, and then know at any given moment whether you are the scare or you are the distraction for another monster to do the scare."

"Haunting is very much a team sport," Ruwe agrees. "We'll coordinate with the other actors who share our spot and with the talent direction staff to share feedback, like if a certain spot is working really well or if we may need to work the space a bit differently."

The location where an actor is situated, which can be as broad as roaming the streets to as specific as jumping out of a certain corner in a horror maze, also informs the coordination and the scare tactics actors use.

"If someone in a room before you scares people at the end of their room, odds are people are going to be running into your room," Robinson explains. "So having another scare right at the beginning will either be great to feed off of, or would totally die because they're not focusing on your section yet."

Figuring out which way a group will go is a fickle thing, and something the actors get better at with experience.

FB_IMG_1569865582456

HAVING FUN WITH IT

And although their jobs are to terrify, being a scare actor also comes with funny as well as surprisingly sweet moments. Hills, for example, recalls that his first experience with a full-face mask was less than glamorous. "The first haunt I did, I was the only actor wearing full facial prosthetics, so they hadn't planned how I would eat and drink," he says. "Whilst everyone was eating a beautifully catered meal, I was pushing soft breakfast bars through the slit in the mouth."

Robinson also has memorable experiences from some of the guests who go through the haunting experience. "My favorites are always the big guys," Robinson says. "The one that's trying to be all tough. There is always something that will get him… I've had guys throwing their girlfriends towards me so they can run."

Sometimes, however, guests are looking for something more than just a scare from the characters. "Every year I get asked to officiate someone's wedding on board the ship," Hills says about his experience on Dark Harbor. "So far I have never been able to do it, but it would be amazing to do."

An Inside Look at the Spooky World of Haunted House Acting

Veteran scare actress Morgan Tucker shares insights from 10 years on the job.

The key to being a good haunted house actor? Confidence.

“If you’re confident that you’re scary, you’re going to be scary,” says Morgan Tucker, an actress with Haunted Field of Screams , a 40-acre haunted cornfield attraction in Thornton.

  • Behind the Scenes of Working at a Haunted House
  • Halloween for Weenies: 10 Festive but Not Actually Scary Things to Do in Denver
  • A Ghost Story for Every Kind of Coloradan

Tucker, 23, speaks from experience: She’s been terrifying Coloradans for a decade in various roles.

Her first year on the job as a scare actor, Tucker played a girl imprisoned in a Hannibal Lecter-themed room. In the time since, “I’ve played clowns, I’ve played ringleaders, I’ve been a drill sergeant,” she says.

This season at Haunted Field of Screams, you can catch Tucker roaming as a cannibalist witchy cult leader who made a deal with the devil to gain the powers of necromancy (the ability to communicate with the dead). The character is “very nice and sweet even though there is that creepy, something’s-not-right-here aspect to her,” says Tucker, one of more than 100 actors employed by the scream park in 2022.

With Halloween less than two weeks away—and a handful of large-scale haunted houses operating in the Denver metro area this year—we chatted with Tucker to learn about her passion for horror, her own spooky experiences on the job, advice for haunted house-goers, and more.

The following conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

5280: You’ve worked as a haunted house actor for 10 years now. What got you into the industry? Morgan Tucker: I’ve always been super-duper into horror movies. One of my favorite things to tell people is for my sixth birthday present, my parents gave me the DVD copy of Resident Evil because that’s what I asked for. And I’ve always been super into the spooky, creepy side of life. I enjoy all the aspects of it. I’m not one that can get really super scared myself.

One of the very first dates I went on was to Field of Corpses.( Editor’s Note: Field of Corpses was a haunted house attraction in Arvada that is no longer in operation. ) And the guy that I was with was like, ‘Oh, I actually work here.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s really cool. I wish I could do that.’ And he’s like, ‘You could!’ And so the very next day, I worked there. I was 13. And I’ve been doing it since then.

I’ve told the Palombos (family) that runs Haunted Field of Screams, where I’ve worked for eight years, that I will do it until I’m physically unable to do it anymore. It is my favorite thing. I plan for it eight months out of the year, just making the costumes and the character ideas, going through and helping with props, trying to figure out different scenes and scenarios, helping train new actors, things like that.

Can you explain what draws you to spooky things? Truthfully, I have no idea. My sister got married recently, and I took over a scrapbook to her. We were going back through it, and there’s a picture of me outside the Haunted Mansion at Disney World. And my mom had made a little note that said, “Of course, this is Morgan’s favorite.” I was two years old.

Part of it is, I am just good at it. I’ve always been super-duper light on my feet. I have three older siblings, and I sneak around corners without trying to and scare them. And it was just always that little jump in my heart, like, Ha! I got you.

the haunted house actors

Where do you find inspiration for your creepy characters? I am a little-bit-of-an-everything nerd. So I love horror movies. I absolutely love reading Stephen King—one of my favorite stories is The Shining . And outside of that, I also play a lot of horror video games. I also dabble in some creative writing, where I come up with my own characters.

What’s it like to scare people on a nightly basis? It’s very freeing, which sounds a little weird. But it’s a place to be myself without any weird judgment. Everyone there is so weird and eclectic. And we all love it for each other. So we have our moments of like, ‘You’re so weird.’ But we just always take it as a compliment, because what’s the point of being normal?

What do you do when you’re not scaring people? I work the daytime corn maze. ( Editor’s note: Haunted Field of Screams doubles as the non-scary Maize in the City during the day. ) And I work at an emergency vet clinic in Westminster. I know several other haunt actors that have worked in veterinary before. One of my very good friends who is a haunt actor is also a paramedic. And another one works as a counselor for kids in high school. We come from so many different walks of life.

What’s the best thing about your job as a haunted house actor? My favorite part of it is just interacting [with visitors]. Whether or not I get the scare, if I just get to have a really interesting, weird conversation with someone, then either way, I’m happy, and I’m having a good time.

What types of conversations are you having in a haunted house? They’re very interesting. I’ve had quite a few conversations of how you can make human body parts into delicious meals. [Laughs.] I went to culinary school, so I know all the different aspects of things needed for that, so people get a little creeped out by that.

You mentioned that it takes a lot for you to get scared. What does scare you? The only thing that truthfully gives me the heebie jeebies, and I for sure don’t want a lot to do with, is ghosts and paranormal things. Which is very funny because I am also a bit of an amateur ghost hunter. I’ve gone to the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, [a former mental hospital in West Virginia], and done some amateur ghost hunting with a ghost hunting group.

I’ve had a few [scary] experiences at Haunted Field of Screams, since we are so close to Riverdale Road. ( Editor’s Note: Riverdale Road is an 11-mile road from Thornton to Brighton that is long-rumored to be haunted .) There’s been several times that you can hear footsteps in the corn, and when you look down the rows, there’s not even anyone in there. Not even anyone close. There has been a sight of an apparition that no one knew if they were an actor or not—that was in the wooded area, and that was just this year. And so there’s been some things, nothing that’s like 100 percent, yeah, that seems very paranormal. But there are definitely some instances where we were like, I don’t think that was 100 percent natural.

What advice would you give to haunted-house-goers? I have so many people that are like, ‘I’m so scared. I’m so scared. I don’t know why I’m doing this.’ And I’m like, ‘If you just talk to people, they’ll be nice.’ We don’t always want to hear the screams; we are happy to also just have a conversation with you.

If you go: Haunted Field of Screams (10451 McKay Road, Thornton) is open now through Oct 31.  $30-$40. Find more information on tickets, hours, and more online .

Ghosts, zombies, clowns, oh my! Haunted houses are a fun part of Halloween, until one of the monsters singles you out and turns your night into a nightmare. If you're planning on visiting a haunted house this fall, survive the scares by blending in with your group and respecting the actors. Now, enter at your own risk!

Going through the House

Step 1 Avoid pretending not to be afraid if you don’t want to be targeted.

  • Pretending like you don’t care also makes it less fun for your friends.

What Not to Say at a Haunted House

"I'm definitely not scared."

"Wow, this is so lame."

"Are they even trying to make this scary?"

"That blood is obviously fake."

"I could totally take down that monster."

"Come at me!"

Step 2 Walk in the middle of your group so your friends get scared first.

  • If there are only 2 or 3 of you, walk as close as possible to your friends. Then, if something jumps out, you can hide behind them.
  • The 1st and 2nd spots where you'll experience the most scares are the front or the back of the group.

Step 3 Refrain from scaring other house-goers, which frustrates the actors.

  • If one of your friends is scaring people on purpose, firmly ask them to stop. You don’t want to get kicked out because they’re being obnoxious.

Step 4 Pretend not to see an impending scare so you don't annoy the actors.

  • Telling your friends that they're about to be scared also makes it less fun for them.
  • For example, if you see an actor peeking out from behind a curtain, don’t say, “Kate, watch out!” Let the scene happen on its own.

Step 5 Stay on the marked path to avoid getting cornered by a monster.

  • If you aren’t sure where to go, follow the group in front of you.
  • Leaving the path can be dangerous, too. There are hazards, like electrical cords and other items, that are intentionally hidden.
  • If a room or door is marked “Staff Only” or "Emergency Exit," don’t enter it.

Step 6 Move at a quick pace so the actors have less time to prepare a scare.

  • Never run. Running in a haunted house can be dangerous and destructive.

Interacting with the Actors

Step 1 Avoid asking the actors not to scare you.

  • Keep in mind that usually, if an actor notices someone is genuinely upset or very frightened, they’ll back off.

How to Act so You Aren't Picked On

Keep your head up. If you try too hard to ignore the actors, they'll work harder to get your attention.

Make eye contact with the actors. It shows you're confident!

Scream loudly when you're scared. Reacting to scares will satisfy the actors and they'll move on to the next person.

Always be aware of your surroundings. It's much easier to get scared when you have no idea what's going on. Scan the room often, especially behind you, to spot scares.

Step 2 Keep your hands to yourself and don’t touch the actors.

  • Some light bumping or brushing against other people is normal and expected.
  • Apologize immediately if you accidentally knock into an actor.
  • If you have a tendency to strike out when scared, have a friend agree to hold your "hitting hand" to keep you from doing so or keep your hands in your pockets.

Step 3 Stay on the actors' good sides by not trying to scare them.

  • It’s not funny to ask for an actor’s phone number or comment on how hot they are.
  • Harassing them can get you escorted off the property.
  • Don't try to get the actors to break character. They won't do it and it will just make them angry.

Step 4 Ask to leave the house only if you’re too scared to continue.

  • Some haunted houses have safe words or phrases for guests to use in the event they want to leave. For example, it might be “I want my Mommy.”
  • Find out before you enter the house what the guidelines are for leaving.

Dressing Appropriately

Step 1 Wear dark-colored clothes so that you’re harder to see.

  • Avoid neon colors or bright white clothes that stand out, especially if the haunted house has a black light.
  • Pay attention to your footwear, too. Dark boots or black tennis shoes are both good options.

Step 2 Cover up with a long-sleeved shirt and pants to hide your goosebumps.

  • If you get cold easily, add layers like an additional sweatshirt or jacket, too, to prevent goosebumps from the chilly air.

Step 3 Choose a large, puffy coat to look more intimidating.

  • Look for down parkas or ski jackets with extra padding.
  • Wearing a heavy sweatshirt underneath your coat will make you even bigger.

Step 4 Leave the masks at home.

  • Wearing a mask in the haunted house might make others mistake you for an actor.
  • If masks are allowed, make sure yours isn’t offensive or overly gruesome. There may be kids at the haunted house.

Community Q&A

Insanero

  • Making fun of actors or attempting to break their character is neither witty nor amusing. Thanks Helpful 4 Not Helpful 0
  • Don't tell actors to stop scaring your kids. If you think your kids can't handle it, don't go in or leave the kids at home with a babysitter. Thanks Helpful 3 Not Helpful 0
  • Most houses will allow you to request a "low" scare or a "high" scare if you feel the need. Thanks Helpful 3 Not Helpful 1

  • Do not run. You could destroy the house or hurt yourself and others. Thanks Helpful 45 Not Helpful 2
  • Do not touch the actors. Do not hit, kick, push, bite, slap, lick, scratch, or otherwise assault actors. Thanks Helpful 24 Not Helpful 1
  • Don't smoke in the house. Thanks Helpful 22 Not Helpful 2
  • Don't bring flashlights. Bringing flashlights ruin the whole effect that most houses often try to create. Thanks Helpful 22 Not Helpful 2
  • Never go to a haunted house while you’re drunk or on drugs. You won't have fun, your friends won't have fun, the actors won't have fun, and you could be a danger to yourself and others. Thanks Helpful 22 Not Helpful 2

Ready for a night of frights? 5 things to know before venturing into the Factory of Terror

FALL RIVER — Spooky season is upon us, which means they're working overtime at the Factory of Terror — with a new, even more frightening experience for visitors who’ve survived the haunted house before.

“We just finished the biggest renovation we’ve ever done,” said Mike Quill, owner of the Factory of Terror and Fear Town in Seekonk — though from the outside, the historic building at 120 Pearl St., with its patchwork brick, boarded-up windows and gargoyle above the door , looks as old and menacing as ever. It’s all part of the aesthetic.

For first-timers or Halloween regulars, here are five things you need to know before venturing inside.

'Infuriating': Ghost tours nationwide have an axe to grind with Lizzie Borden House owner

Factory of Terror joins the 27 Club

The Factory of Terror is marking its 27th year in business, making it one of the longest-running Halloween attractions in the area. Twenty-seven isn’t a round number and not particularly noteworthy — unless you recall the odd coincidence that an unusual number of musicians and artists have all met untimely and often gruesome deaths at age 27 , including Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison and many, many others.

Factory of Terror is 'wildly different' from previous years

For any haunted house attraction to stay in business that long, they have to keep the frights fresh. Quill said they’ve done that and gone beyond for the 2023 season.

“We nearly reworked the entire show,” Quill said. “It’s wildly different from last year.”

He said in the past the haunted house’s many rooms had all different themes — a trip through will be more unified, he said. “We’ve been able to over the last few years change it over, so it’s a much more cohesive theme and story throughout the experience, which I think is cool," Quill said.

Haunted happenings: Fear, horror, and ghosts on the SouthCoast

A trip through the haunted house itself takes about 15 minutes, he said, though a night out will last longer when you factor in the gift shop and hanging out with some of the ghouls that roam the line outside.

Featuring a cast of committed creatures

Quill called this year’s cast of about 30 “the strongest group of actors and staff we’ve ever had.”

“A lot of really good returning actors and great crop of new hires that came in this year,” Quill said. “You can tell right off the bat they have the love for creating a cool experience and getting into character and putting on an awesome show.”

Quill said when it comes to designing what the various monsters, murderers and demons look like, both the creative team and the actors contribute to making each character terrifying beyond human comprehension.

"It’s one of the coolest parts, seeing an actor take a character or a room in a direction that’s well beyond what we would've thought of ahead of time," he said. “We very much embrace the creativity of our actors and staff to bring it to life and take it in directions that’s well beyond what we originally thought.”

They’re also hiring — according to their website, multiple open interviews are set for later this month.

Need more nightmares? They own Fear Town too

For people looking for more frights, Quill also owns Fear Town, a Halloween attraction in Seekonk that's even larger, with three haunted houses for a 45-minute excursion into the strange and unexpected. It also includes a midway with games to take the edge off.

When is Factory of Terror open?

The Factory of Terror is open Fridays to Sundays in the evenings through October, with a few extra dates midweek including Oct. 30 and 31. The nightmare also lingers into the first full week of November. For full hours and ticket availability, check factoryofterror.com .

A History of The Actors Studio

Written by Andreas Manolikakis

The Actors Studio was founded in New York by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford and Robert Lewis in 1947. For seven decades it has been devoted to the service and development of theatre artists –actors, directors and playwrights. To our members, who are primarily actors, The Actors Studio offers free lifetime membership, with no fee or tuition required, which entitles them to a unique opportunity to explore and improve their craft in a safe, laboratory environment with colleagues with whom they share the same process of work.

The roots of The Actors Studio go back to the Group Theatre (1931-1941) whose work was inspired by the discoveries of the great Russian actor and director Konstantin Stanislavski and his best student Eugene Vakhtangov as revealed in the legendary productions that the Moscow Art Theatre toured in America in 1923. In fact Stanislavski’s dedication to his book, ‘My Life in Art,’ (1924) reads: “I DEDICATE THIS BOOK IN GRATITUDE TO HOSPITABLE AMERICA AS A TOKEN AND A REMEMBRANCE FROM THE MOSCOW ART THEATRE WHICH SHE TOOK SO KINDLY TO HER HEART.”

When the Moscow Art Theatre ended its American tour, several members of the theatre stayed behind and trained artists, including Lee Strasberg, Harold Clurman and Stella Adler, who would go on to form the Group Theatre along with other artists such as Elia Kazan, Sanford Meisner and Robert Lewis. These artists studied, explored, developed and improved the work of the Russian masters with extraordinary results that were unique in the history of the American theatre and a new kind of acting was born.

After the Group Theatre closed, in 1941, many of its members went their separate ways. Elia Kazan has stated that one of the principal reasons he created The Actors Studio, in 1947, was in order to preserve and develop this new American acting. He wanted to create a not-for-profit organization that would provide a laboratory, a private workshop in which the professional actor could work on his or her craft, far away from the commercial pressures of casting, rehearsal and performance. It was to be a place that would offer its member-artists an ongoing training, a continuity of work and the feeling of an artistic home like they had at the Group Theatre.

At the Studio, it was eventually decided that membership should be achieved through an audition process of preliminary and then final auditions where the only requirements are talent and the possibility of improvement.

In 1948, Lee Strasberg was asked by Elia Kazan to join the Studio as one of its teachers and in 1951 he became its Artistic Director, a position he maintained until his death in 1982. Strasberg’s deep understanding of the Stanislavski System and the reformulations of Vakhtangov, together with his own personal discoveries and improvements on the acting process, provided the foundation on which The Actors Studio based its work.

At the same time, the work of Elia Kazan as a theatre and film director demonstrated in the most powerful way the extraordinary results of the deep and personal process of acting espoused by The Actors Studio.

For seven decades, the very existence of The Actors Studio, the principles and values that it represents, the methodology of its work process, its consistency and long life have established the Studio as a unique theatre organization and a guiding light for actors, directors and playwrights around the world. For many it is considered the temple of the acting process.

Today the work that is done at The Actors Studio continues the Stanislavski-Vakhtangov-American approach, and most of the leading members of the Studio today have studied with more than one of these great American teachers: Lee Strasberg, Harold Clurman, Elia Kazan, Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner and Robert Lewis.

Currently, Ellen Burstyn, Alec Baldwin and Al Pacino serve as co-Presidents of the Studio. Beau Gravitte serves as Artistic Director in New York and Salome Jens and Lou Antonio serve as interim co-Associate Artistic Directors in West Hollywood at our Actors Studio West branch, which opened in 1966. The Actors Studio is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of members from both coasts.

After 70 years, The Actors Studio continues to thrive because it is needed. Goethe has said that, “The actor’s career develops in public, but his art develops in private.” The Studio provides its members with this special kind of privacy, along with a group of colleagues who share the same passion for what Studio members refer to as “The Work.”

In spite of the presence of The Actors Studio over many years and its extensive influence in America and worldwide, there still persist many misunderstandings of the Studio, its mentors, its philosophy and its process. These errors most often arise from discussions by some academics, theoreticians, historians and even by some theatre professionals who attempt to analyze and interpret a process of work that they have never learned through serious practice. The work of Stanislavski, Vakhtangov and The Actors Studio was arrived at through deep and lengthy practical experiments that elude rational analysis by non-practitioners.

In 1994 The Actors Studio entered a major new phase with the creation of The Actors Studio Drama School MFA (Master of Fine Arts) Program in acting, directing and playwriting, in order to bring the Studio’s method into a university setting. In September 2006, the Actors Studio Drama School moved to Pace University in downtown New York City, which also is the home of one of the program’s most visible teaching platforms, INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO, hosted by James Lipton.

Andreas Manolikakis is a Board Member of The Actors Studio and Chair of The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York City.

I shopped Bath & Body Works' Halloween collection. Here are the highlights, from blood-red shower gel to a $250 candle holder.

  • Bath & Body Works released its annual Halloween collection online and in stores on Monday.
  • I visited my local shop and was impressed by the vast array of products, from soap to decorations.
  • Some items were already sold out and listed on resale websites like eBay for triple the price.

Bath and Body Works released its highly anticipated 2023 Halloween collection on Monday.

haunted mansion bath and body works

You might argue that it's too early to shop for Halloween decor , but Bath & Body Works shoppers seem to disagree.

For weeks leading up to the launch of the store's annual Halloween line, holiday enthusiasts and Bath & Body Works fans alike have anticipated its release on social media.

Some posted excited Tweets about the yearly event , while others shared leaked product information on TikTok.

So after seeing the buzz around the collection for weeks, I visited Bath & Body Works on Monday to check out the collection for myself.

Not only did I quickly understand the hype surrounding the Halloween items, but I also noticed a few highlights that really stood out from the rest of the line.

I visited Bath & Body Works the day the line was released, and immediately felt drawn to a candle stand shaped like a crystal ball.

haunted mansion bath and body works

Bath & Body Works is known for its lotions and candles. But during Halloween, the store is all about decor: car air fresheners, water globes, and wall plug-ins are just a few examples.

In 2021, there was even a candle stand shaped like a witch hand that became so popular it led to mass complaints and skyrocketing resale prices when shoppers couldn't find it online or in stores.

So when I noticed this new candle stand, I was immediately reminded of the beloved item. The $69.95 Fortune Teller piece has white, witch-like hands wrapped around a water globe, which stands as a base to place a three-wick candle on.

I was impressed by the decoration on its own, but even more so when I realized the water within it swirls, shimmers, and changes color.

Then I noticed a stand covered in blood-red lotions, shower gels, soaps, and candles.

I first tried Bath & Body Works' Vampire Blood line in 2021, and have been thrilled to see the berry scent return with new packaging each year since.

This year, most Vampire Blood products are decorated with golden skulls and bleeding roses. I personally prefer previous designs — which featured cute bats and gothic collages — but love the scent enough to buy refills anyway.

These products ranged in price between $4.95 and $26.95.

My favorite items on this table were the extravagant candle stands.

I really loved the one designed to look like a dripping rose , which retailed for $19.95 and holds a single-wick candle.

Another customer seemingly felt the same way. I noticed her run past me with the decoration in hand straight to the register — a smart choice, considering there was only a handful at the store and others have been listed on resale websites for triple the price .

There was also a golden, skull-encrusted clock pedestal that holds a three-wick candle and actually tells time. It caught my attention, but the $69.95 price tag led me to put it back on the shelf.

I'm a sucker for Bath & Body Works' hand-sanitizer holders, and there are two that really stand out this year.

haunted mansion bath and body works

The first PocketBac holder I noticed featured another spooky hand — this one belonging to a skeleton — wrapped around a red, dripping candle.

At first, I thought the keychain, which was priced at $13.95 , was a little expensive. But then I noticed the hand glows in the dark, the candle flame lights up, and an eerie sound plays when you press a small button on top.

I immediately purchased the PocketBac holder shaped like a crystal ball.

Retailing for $9.95 , the keychain holds your hand sanitizer and also illuminates with varying light patterns.

But I was most drawn to the product's spooky details, particularly its green hands and the tiny rings placed across them.

My favorite candle from this year's Halloween line smells like a garden and is adorned with a gold crown.

haunted mansion bath and body works

The burgundy candle matches the gold skull portion of Bath & Body Works' Halloween line.  Though the aesthetic doesn't scream Halloween to me, I'd still add the $36.95 candle to my collection (if I paid with a coupon).

It has a similar berry scent to Vampire Blood, but with more floral elements — as if you're walking through a magical garden.

There seemed to be a lot of buzz around the Halloween wall plug-ins this year.

As I debated which candle stands to splurge on, a group of women entered the store and immediately flocked to the display of Wallflower fragrance wall plug-ins. Naturally, I followed their lead.

And quickly, I understood their interest. There was one scent dispenser shaped like a horse-drawn carriage that illuminated to reveal skeletons inside, another designed like a haunted house complete with ghosts and a moon projection, and simpler ones depicting bejeweled bats and sparkling ghosts .

These ranged in price from $14.95 to $39.95, and shoppers seemed to love the detailed designs.

I wasn't able to view the entire Halloween collection in store, but I was still thoroughly impressed.

As I shopped, I was approached by an employee who said: "Just so you know, this is only some of our Halloween stuff. We still have more to put out."

That surprised me, because I was already overwhelmed by the dozens of items available. I was also impressed.

The candles and lotions smelled delicious, the decor was well-detailed, and the variety of spooky aesthetics made it so that all shoppers could find something that matched their personal Halloween decor.

Certain high-demand items — like a $99.95 carriage-shaped candle stand and a $250 haunted-house style candle luminary — were sold out both at the store I visited and online. (Both are already listed on resale sites like eBay for prices upwards of $200 and $300 , respectively.)

But I can't say I minded. There were so many other options available, and I was thrilled with my purchase: the crystal ball PocketBac holder and two candle stands, one shaped like a goblet and another shaped like a spider web .
