First look: C-Cat 48

The new C-Cat 48 is a high performance cruising catamaran, which is available in two different specifications. Rupert Holmes reports

The C-Cat 48 is a lightweight and fast Italian cruising catamaran from the Comar Yachts yard near Rome, Italy.

The newly announced catamaran features C-foil daggerboards, which should reduce displacement at speed, in turn helping the cat achieve high speeds on passage, and high bridgedeck clearance.

The C-Cat 48, follows the same philosophy as it’s younger sister, the C-Cat 37 and incorporates the same key concepts to create a single large outdoor living space. The cockpit is protected by a large bimini, which is fully closable for pleasant outdoor living, and the cockpit and dinette are both on the same level, divided by a large sliding door.

Young French designer François Perus has created a boat that fits at the high end of the performance cruising spectrum, yet still offers spacious and comfortable accommodation.

This accommodation includes a very sheltered cockpit that opens onto a large saloon with optional inside steering position.

Two customisable versions are offered: the Antigua is the higher performance option and emphasises the boat’s sporty potential, with a lightweight interior, while the Saint Barths offers a greater degree of luxury for those who may spend extended periods on board.

The first boat is scheduled for a mid-August 2021 launch at Fiumicino near Rome and will be unveiled to the public at the Cannes boat show .

One of my favourite performance catamaran designs is the Gunboat 48. They only ever built six of them, and they still change hands for well into 7 figures, so it has always surprised me that no-one has tried to fill this market gap. Outremer and Marsaudon have a 45 and a 42 respectively – slightly smaller, and they seem to sell well.

Well, no-one up until now that is, as the Italian yard C-Catamarans is launching the C- 48 and she looks like she might clean up in this sector of the market. This Italian yard has a history of spotting an opportunity. They successfully launched a 37 footer: another market that has been forgotten by the major manufacturers.

This Italian boat is competing with the likes of the Windelo 50 catamaran in the performance cruising market. It’s a busy market.

The C-Cat 37 was designed by Marc Lombard, one of our favourite architects, and is a neat entry level cat. They plan to launch a range of high performance, top of the range catamarans: a 62 footer, a 56 footer and the C-Cat 48. Exciting stuff and they’ll be going up against the likes of HH, Icecat, Kinetic, Balance, O Yachts and even Gunboat.

This fast cat is the same length as the Bali 4.8 but that is where the similarities finish. This catamaran is all about safe performance.

• The look! This is a fantastic looking boat: Italian styling at its best
• The combination of twin aft helms and the interior helm station means that you get the best of both worlds: maximum sailing feel and protection when the weather turns nasty.
• With an SA / D ratio over 26, this is a fast, light boat along the lines of an Outremer (with more living space thanks to the Open design)
• Pretty good value compared to the competition
• Comar Yachts have plenty of experience in building boats.
• The quality of the interior finish is a cut above the competition.
• With twin 35 HP engines, she seems underpowered when the wind dies. I am guessing there will be an option to upgrade to more power here.
• With only 300 litres of fresh water capacity, you are going to need a water maker
• The fuel tanks are fairly modest too (2x 130 L). But then again, you should be sailing on this boat most of the time if you keep the weight off and your sail locker is full.
• Aft helms. They always go in the pros and the cons, don’ t they? Great for maximum sailing feel when the C-Cat 48 accelerates, but you are exposed back there if it blows up. There is a great option for an inside wheel at the nav station as well. That would be top of my options list after the gennaker, Code 0 and water maker.

The Team Who Love Fast Cats The C-Cat 48 was designed by the Yacht Design Collective (François Perus and Romain Scolari) who are the team behind the ITA 14.99. It’s a catamaran that has been inspired by the likes of the Gunboat 60 and the Outremer 4X, but also has a healthy serving of Italian styling. This 48 footer  has been designed to cross oceans at speed in safety and comfort. She is built in Fiumicino, about an hour from Rome at the C-Catamarans yard.

She draws many design cues from her smaller sister, the C-Cat 37.

The entire cockpit and saloon is designed along the “Open” lines so loved by Marc Lombard, the designer of the smaller boat. You are protected by a large bimini with the aft cockpit and the saloon on the same level, separated by a large sliding door which connects the 2 spaces into one large open living area.

Best of Both Worlds? The C-Cat 48 is a catamaran for sailors along the lines of a Nautitech or a classic Catana with twin aft helms at the stern and all the running rigging led back so that you can manage the boat  without having to leave the aft cockpit. She’s been designed for short handed crews. The only sails that you will need to deal with forward are the light wind sails (gennaker, Code 0 and so on). There is a Harken winch on the mast to help you.

Of course, the main concern for most with sporty aft helms is protection and safety in bad weather. The C-Cat 48 has an option for an additional interior helm station with an interior wheel which gives you the best of both worlds. I can only think of Kinetic who offer a similar solution, and they are in the 7 figure price bracket

The ride is smooth like an Outremer, with a high bridge-deck and low Displacement to Length ratio. This cat should get you out of trouble quickly. They have though about weight distribution carefully. The anchor is set back just forward of the mast for instance, to centralise the weight.

A Powerful Sail Plan The SA / D ratio sits at over 26 with the mainsail and self tacking jib flying. There is also a genoa and options for a gennaker, code 0 and parasailor /Spinnaker. That should put the C – Cat 48 at the top of the performance cruiser category along with the likes of the Balance 482 (probably the closest competition?) There are also options for a carbon mast and longeron which will help you safely fly more sail area.

Modern and efficient, the C-Cat 48 is equipped with C-Foil daggerboards which should give you a bit of lift at speed.

This catamaran is constructed with a sandwich laminate structure infused with multiaxial fabrics and an epoxy-vinyl matrix. The bulkheads are made of composite with local carbon reinforcements in higher stress areas. She’s pretty rigid which all helps to improve the performance of this catamaran.

In the interior, there are 2 customizable options available: Antigua: a cleaner, sportier finish if weight reduction is your top priority, and St.Barth for a more luxurious, comfortable finish, albeit with some weight penalty.

The C-Cat 48 is one of the most exciting designs to come out in the performance cruising category. It’s great to see this Italian catamaran out on the water. I’ll be queueing up for a test sail!

How much does a C-Cat 48 Cost? What is the price? Well, as always, we will cover ourselves by saying that it depends on the options you go for, but a very nice example will set you back around €750k plus taxes.

Following on from the C-Cat 37, a compact catamaran that was unanimously acknowledged to be very successful, the Italian builder is now launching a much more ambitious 48-foot model. Performance and comfort are the order of the day: we’re now in the realms of Outremer, Catana, Balance, HH, Seawind or Ita. These are all cruising multihulls that uphold the pleasure of sailing... on all points of sail, thanks to their daggerboards!

An existing boatbuilder freshly converted to multihulls

Comar has been an internationally known brand since 1971: the shipyard based at Fiumiccino shipyard, west of Rome, on the banks of the Tiber, has produced thousands of great monohulls, with a range from 21 to 100 feet. Collaborations with the Finot Group for the Comet 11-13- 14 or Valiccelli series proved very successful. The Genesis 43 and the Phoenix 50 also won many fans, and the reputation for quality of Comar boats was established. However, the shipyard experienced difficulties during the crisis of the 1990s. In 1998, when Massimo Guardigli took over Comar, things started to look up for the yard, they began offering a range of custom-built monohulls alongside their production boats of recognized quality, such as the Comet 38, 50 and 65 – all Bruce Farr designs. The C51 Sport, an aggressive cruiser-racer, has seen great success on the race course. But as the monohull market became more and more competitive and the demand for multihulls grew, Massimo and his team decided to reorient the entire shipyard towards a new brand: C-Catamarans.

Dieses wunderschöne Design stammt aus der Hand von Francois Perus! Kraftvolle Linien und Schwerter, die viel Geschwindigkeit versprechen und ein schönes Interieur mit allem Komfort den man sich wünschen kann. Ob die Cat für einen Wochenendausflug oder zum Leben an Bord verwendet wird, auf diesem Katamaran ist alles möglich!

Auch beim C-Cat 48 sind 3 Innenausstattungen möglich;

Die Standard-Eigner Version mit 2 gleichgroßen Rümpfen mit riesiges Doppelbett hinten und großem Badezimmer vorne und viel Schrankraum dazwischen.

Oder die Club-Version mit dem Eigner-Rumpf an Steuerbord mit riesiges Bett im Heck und einem großen Badezimmer vorne und einem Rumpf an Backbord mit einer geräumigen Schlafkabine vorne und hinten und einem große Badezimmer dazwischen.

Oder die Charterversion mit 2 gleichgroßen Rümpfen mit einer geräumigen Schlafkabine vorne und hinten und einem geräumigen Badezimmer dazwischen.

Der Salon auf dem Brückendeck zwischen den Rümpfen hat eine großzügige Sitzgruppe, einen Kartentisch mit optionaler Steuermöglichkeit und eine sehr geräumige U-Küche. Da der Salon innen und das Cockpit außen auf gleicher Höhe liegen, lässt sich der Innen- und Außenraum problemlos zu einem großen Raum zusammengezogen werden, der auf Wunsch durch die Cockpit-Zelt vor Witterungseinflüssen geschützt werden kann.

Durch die Vakuuminjektion des Laminats mit Epoxid-Vinylester-Harz und den Einsatz von Carbon an den Stellen, an denen große Kräfte einwirken, ist eine sehr leichte und steife Konstruktion entstanden, es ist auch möglich das C-Cat 48 komplett aus Carbon zu bauen.

Es wurde bereits erwähnt, unsere C-Cats sind schnell. Geschwindigkeit ist auch Sicherheit, es ist auch einfacher, auf langen Reisen Wettersystemen zu vermeiden oder damit Schritt zu halten. Aber es gibt mehr Sicherheit; beide Bögen haben ganz vorne eine sogenannte „Crashbox“. Dadurch wird sichergestellt, dass beim Auftreffen auf einen harten Gegenstand nicht sofort Wasser durch das ganze Boot läuft, sondern der Schaden an Ort und Stelle bleibt. Tatsächlich gibt es 4 luftdichte Fächer, die den C-Cat 48 sogar unsinkbar machen! Die Schwerter haben Bruchflächen, so dass sie bei einem (sehr) harten Berührung unter Wasser abbrechen könnten, ohne den Rumpf zu beschädigen.

NEW YORK — Donald Trump is seeking to have New York’s highest court intervene in his fight over a gag order that has seen him fined $10,000 and threatened with jail for violating a ban on commenting about witnesses, jurors and others connected to his hush money criminal trial .

The former president’s lawyers filed a notice of appeal Wednesday, a day after the state’s mid-level appellate court refused his request to lift or modify the restrictions. The filing was listed on a court docket, but the document itself was sealed and not available.

Trump presidential campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said it’s a request for the state’s Court of Appeals to take up the matter.

“President Trump has filed a notice to appeal the unconstitutional and un-American gag order imposed by conflicted Judge Juan Merchan in the lawless Manhattan DA case,” Cheung said in a statement.

“The threat to throw the 45th President of the United States and the leading candidate in the 2024 presidential election in jail for exercising his First Amendment rights is a Third World authoritarian tactic typical of Crooked Joe Biden and his comrades,” Cheung said.

A five-judge panel of the mid-level appeals court, the Appellate Division of the state’s trial court, ruled Tuesday that Merchan “properly determined” that Trump’s public statements “posed a significant threat to the integrity of the testimony of witnesses and potential witnesses in this case as well.”

Trump had asked the state’s intermediate appeals court to lift or modify the gag order. Among other restrictions, it bars him from making or directing others to make statements about witnesses like his fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen , who will testify for a third day Thursday. It also prohibits comments about court staff, the judge’s family and prosecutors other than Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg .

Bragg’s office declined comment. A message seeking comment was left with a spokesperson for the state court system.

“The gag order has to come off,” Trump told reporters as he headed into court Tuesday. Later, he lamented, “As you know, I’m under a gag order, so I can’t answer those very simple questions you’re asking me.”

Trump has been noticeably more circumspect in his comments after Merchan held him in contempt of court and fined him a total of $10,000 for violating the gag order 10 times in recent weeks. The judge told Trump last week that future gag order violations could send him to jail.

Among the violations were Trump’s several attacks on Cohen, including an April 13 social media post asking, “Has disgraced attorney and felon Michael Cohen been prosecuted for LYING? Only TRUMP people get prosecuted by this Judge and these thugs!”

Merchan also flagged reposts Trump made of a New York Post article that described Cohen as a “serial perjurer,” and a Trump post quoting Fox News host Jesse Watters’ claim that liberal activists were lying to infiltrate the jury.

Merchan’s jail warning came after he ruled Trump had violated the gag order a final time when, in an April 22 interview with television channel Real America’s Voice, he criticized the speed at which the jury was picked and claimed, without evidence, that it was stacked with Democrats.

Merchan issued the gag order March 26 after prosecutors raised concerns about Trump’s propensity to attack people involved in his cases. He expanded it April 1 to prohibit comments about his own family after Trump lashed out on social media at the judge’s daughter , a Democratic political consultant, and made false claims about her.

Trump appealed the gag order April 8, just days before the start of jury selection. At an emergency hearing before a single judge of the Appellate Division, Trump’s lawyers argued the order was an unconstitutional curb on the Republican presidential nominee’s free speech rights while he’s campaigning and fighting criminal charges.

Specifically, according to court papers, Trump challenged restrictions on his ability to comment about Matthew Colangelo, a former Justice Department official who is a part of the prosecution team, and Merchan’s daughter, whose firm has worked for Trump’s rival, President Joe Biden, and other Democrats.

In its ruling Tuesday, the Appellate Division noted that Trump wasn’t claiming that the gag order had infringed on his right to a fair trial. Rather, Trump’s lawyers argued that prohibiting him from commenting about Colangelo and Loren Merchan restricted his ability to engage in protected political speech and could adversely affect his campaign.

The appeals court ruled that Judge Merchan “properly weighed” Trump’s free speech rights against the “historical commitment to ensuring the fair administration of justice in criminal cases, and the right of persons related or tangentially related to the criminal proceedings from being free from threats, intimidation, harassment, and harm.”

SKOPJE, North Macedonia (AP) — European Union candidate North Macedonia sought Monday to calm disputes with EU neighbors Greece and Bulgaria that flared up following the landslide election victory of a conservative-backed coalition and president.

North Macedonia changed its name from Macedonia after a 2018 landmark agreement with Greece that ended a years-long quarrel over the name, which had been claimed by Greece for one of its regions. At a swearing in ceremony Sunday, President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova referred to her country as “Macedonia,” prompting a heated response from Athens.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called the remarks “illegal and unacceptable,” in an online post Monday, adding: “We declare categorically that we will not accept any further missteps of this nature.”

Siljanovska-Davkova’s comments also drew criticism from the European Commission and a warning from Bulgaria that North Macedonia would be held to the terms of international agreements it had signed up to.

The president’s office said Monday that Siljanovska-Davkova would respect the country’s international obligations but added that she retains “the right to use the name Macedonia as a personal right of self-identification.”

The geographical region of Macedonia is divided by the national borders of Greece, Bulgaria and North Macedonia. The name dispute delayed the former Yugoslav republic’s long-standing efforts to join the European Union and NATO.

The country joined the military alliance in 2020.

North Macedonia’s conservative VMRO-DPMNE won a landslide twin presidential and parliamentary election last week and is set to lead the next government after emerging from years in opposition.
