Ocean Series 48 GT
Back in 2004 when Morris Yachts debuted its newest Morris 486, Consulting Time II , at the Annapolis Sailboat Show the new boat seemed, at first glance, to be nothing more than a tweaked variation on two of Chuck Paine’s previous designs. But as the years have passed along with thousands of miles under the keel, Consulting Time II along with the 48s that followed have proved themselves to be rugged, fast and able offshore sailboats. They have ably stood up to the rigors of long ocean passages. Can a good design be improved on? Morris and a number of its loyal owners think the answer to that question is a definite yes.
In August, Morris Yachts announced the world premiere of a new 48, the Ocean Series 48 GT (Grande Touring). The debut was made during the company’s 40th anniversary celebration in Northeast Harbor, Maine. The new boat, currently in the design stage was presented in drawing with a fully constructed mock-up of the new interior.
According to the company’s new CEO Doug Metchick, the 48 GT addresses the needs of a different sailing demographic, and in the words of company president Cuyler Morris can be characterized by the words “new revolution, new design, new spirit, new technology, and new comfort.”
Forward owner’s stateroom is ample with a large shower. |
Retaining sailing performance So what has changed? Certainly not the performance of the yacht’s proven Chuck Paine hull design. The bones of the 48 will remain the same. What will change in the new model will come in the way of amenities, improved safety, and overall comfort and livability. Performance and sea keeping are retained in the 48 GT, but it will also boast modern interior design alongside some of Morris’ classic styling cues.
The raised main saloon looking forward to the starboard side nav station. |
Perhaps the most visible change can be seen in the galley. The new galley now spans the beam and features a full-service galley to port and a utility station to starboard, replacing the older boat’s pilot berth. The galley sink now faces forward with the starboard utility space for additional counter area and storage. Improvements have also been made to the draw systems and cabinet configurations.
To fully take advantage of the pilothouse windows and provide for increased tank capacity, the cabin sole in the main saloon has been raised up one inch and the settee and dinette are three inches higher overall. Small as this move may seem, it provides for an entirely new perspective and provides owners and guests with more light and an almost direct line of sight when looking out the side windows or forward. The saloon also features a starboard side berth/lounge. Overall storage has been greatly improved.
Other interior changes include improved space in the forward owner’s cabin and a reconfiguration of the forward en suite head to include a space saving super yacht style circular shower. The size of the navigation station has been somewhat diminished as the trend to navigation from the cockpit continues to gain popularity. A larger rig On deck the boat’s deck layout remains clean and functional for offshore sailing. It will now be offered with a larger rig for even greater sailing performance that includes a self-tacking jib and leisure-furl mainsail for easier sail-handling. Other changes and improved safety features include an in-mold swim platform featuring a new passerelle transom door for easy cockpit access to the water and ease of Mediterranean mooring.
The galley will be a secure working space offshore in heavy conditions. |
Metchick said, “The new layout is designed to be contemporary and adaptable, providing a new level of personalization for the owner.” It will clearly appeal to those who want an interior space that is conducive to socializing without sacrificing offshore performance — what Morris considers a hallmark of the series. Whether owners plan to coastal cruise with family and friends or embark on serious ocean passages, the new Morris 48 GT will be up to the job. With the conventional 48 RS still available, a move to the 48 GT will be more about preference than compromise.

I really have no way of judging...we are just interested in a Social Membership, new to the area, want to meet new people. To us, that means social events which include food and drink. However, as a prospective member (with no boat) you cannot try the food or drink for quality unless you join first... and being new to the area, don't yet know any members who would treat us or introduce us to the club. Kind of like buying by a car but can't test drive it first, or buying anything unseen, like a marriage before a date.
We attended a celebration here, and it was lovely. The location is perfect, right in Mission Beach, off of the Santa Clara parking lot. They have their own parking, which is a lifesaver in the summer. The club is definitely older in decor, but kept up well. Aside from the decor, the alcohol prices also transported me back in time. Drinks were about $5 each. Aside from our large party, there were many other members hosting small groups. They have a private beach area to get some sun, sand, and water. I miss living in MB!
I've been here a few times, and I've never had a bad experience. The staff are always friendly, though not always quick with your order. The grounds are beautiful, with outdoor showers, and bathrooms worthy of a Starbucks. Being that it's private property, you can drink alcohol on the beach - where else can you do that in San Diego?! My only complaint would be the parking - the lot is usually reserved for members only, and parking in nearby Mission Bay is nearly impossible. Despite that though, I always look forward to my next day at MBYC!
Gathering with work colleagues. Food: 4.5 Stars Atmosphere: 4.5 Stars Service: 4 Stars Best part of this place is the view. So beautiful. You can go to the bar and order a drink and/or food from the walk-up counter. I was there with about a dozen colleagues and everyone was happy with their meals and drinks. I had shrimp tacos that were amazing. The price is right, parking was easy, and there were plenty of places to eat. This could be a fun stop on a date night or a great location for a large group. Since the bar and dining area are separate, kids are welcome in the dining area. If you don't want kids around you can sit in the bar. For a casual night out this is a solid location.
Love the bar, their tasty menu and amazing chef, hosted events and we had our small wedding reception in the Fleet room. Jason the GM is wonderful and worked with us to create an amazing menu and a great party.

great place to spend weekend and watch sailors on the sea. Fish and chips are fresh and plus beer !!
After joining MBYC in 11/2022, I now spend many happy days here. Already traveled by sailboat, Kayak, Paddle Boat, bus, NCL Bliss Boat to Mexico, motor launch out to local waters and bike, I recommend the MBYC to anyone wanting fun. I celebrate all Holidays and most days meet new friends from around the world. Family Tradition here is huge and they have included me events I have dreamed about for years. Come join us, 'cause it's 5 o'clock somewhere, Cheers!
Could use a little updating, but the feel is very homey and they have a nice view for the Sea World Fireworks! I've been to their Friday dinners and I have enjoyed the outdoor seating by the water. I'll update this as I have more experiences here. :)
Driving here reminded me of a nightmare I had one night where we had to drive through all these little alleys, nooks and crannies to only hit a dead end and zombies started coming out and attacked us. I thought our GPS was going nuts when we were driving through these small roads, but low and behold, it dropped us off at this parking lot over the water. We weren't sure where the yacht club was but after pacing up and down, it was straight ahead, past the parking lot we parked in. The yacht club reminds me of a senior center I used to go to visit my grandfather, it had an old carpet smell to it and you to your left, at the bar, are some older gentlemen and women who are there to have a good time. We walked into the dining area, where our college alumni event was. Rather nice set up with a buffet line, cozy fire place and some nice deck views outside. The buffet food wasn't bad, not even sure if it's catered by the Yacht club, but I think my favorite part of being here was sitting out on the deck and watching the lit up yachts go by at night. Peaceful and serene.
I love this no frills yacht club! It's close to my apt and the staff is always friendly. Al at the bar pours a stiff drink for sure. No complaints there and the popcorn at the bar is a yummy snack while you have some cocktails. Jimmer is the best sailing coach around too.
