Yes, You Really Can Charter The Northern Sun Yacht From Below Deck Down Under

It will cost you, though.

BELOW DECK DOWN UNDER -- Pictured: Northern Sun -- (Photo by: Mark Rogers/Bravo via Getty Images)

When Captain Jason Chambers set sail for Peacock’s Below Deck Down Under Season 2 , he was in somewhat unchartered territory. Filmed at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef in the stunning waters of Cairns, Australia, the latest season welcomed guests aboard the M/Y Northern Sun , a Japanese superyacht that was unlike any vessel he’d ever captained in the past. “ Northern Sun is a 1977 Japanese fishing vessel that’s been converted to a luxury superyacht,” Captain Jason explains in the Season 2 premiere. “It’s the perfect vessel because, this season, we’re in Cairns, right at the foothills of the most spectacular underwater scenery you’ll ever see. It’s adventure yachting, and it’s perfect for exploration.”

You don’t have to sign up for a reality TV show to visit the 50.8-meter-long Northern Sun, though. The yacht, which began as an ice-class research vessel that analyzed marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea, is currently listed with a weekly charter starting cost of $161,700 and an asking price of $15 million. Able to accommodate 12 guests in 6 staterooms, Northern Sun includes such luxury amenities as al fresco dining, an outdoor jacuzzi, and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide, as well as a range of water-sport toys, allowing guests the opportunity to go scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, water skiing, and more, while exploring Thailand and surrounding areas.

BELOW DECK DOWN UNDER -- Pictured: (l-r) Aesha Scott, Captain Jason Chambers -- (Photo by: Mark Roge...

In a July interview with Bravo’s The Daily Dish, Chief Stew Aesha Scott explained why Northern Sun made Season 2 “completely different ” in allowing guests to have one-of-a-kind experiences. “The boat was smaller, it was more manageable,” she said, comparing the vessel to M/Y Thalassa BDDU ’s inaugural season. “The boat this year was a converted fishing vessel, and for me it was just so much better because Thalassa was outrageous how big it was. That was part of the stress was that it was just so big ... We’re still offering the guests a really nice five-star experience.”

Northern Sun’s laid-back feel also played a key role in Season 2. “I think altogether that it’s just kind of created a more tropical, casual kind of vibe, which I actually think was a real positive thing because the guests were just so relaxed,” Aesha added. “And [they] just got up to such mischief — which was funny most of the time. Sometimes it was annoying, but most of the time it was funny.”

Captain Jason, for his part, shared in a separate interview with the outlet that the latest installment of the original Bravo franchise flew by, either way. “I walked onto the boat, said ‘What the hell is going on?’” he joked. “And then the season ended.”

Northwest Yachts

Designed specifically to handle any ocean environment, Northwest Yachts was born out of the need for a trawler-style motor yacht that could handle the seas of the Pacific Northwest and still provide the extra level of comfort needed for extended adventures. Designed to put you in charge of the journey, Northwest Yachts are engineered with cutting-edge construction methods and powered by some serious propulsion systems that reach top speeds of 18 to 20 knots. The Northwest 48 and 52 come standard with twin John Deere 6068 that are 330HP each while the larger models, the 63, 70, and 75, offer a choice between twin John Deere 6135 750hp engines or the MAN 1,000hp engines. The standard engines for each Northwest models were chosen specifically to give each boat the right efficiency to perform at maximum range at displacement speeds while keeping some reserve power available when needed by the captain.

Quick Facts about Northwest Yachts

  • Northwest Yachts buids trawler-style, long-dstance cruising boats.
  • Northwest Yachts was started by Peter and Jan Whiting.
  • Northwest models are designed by Steve Seaton.
  • The largest Northwest model offered is a 75-footer.

Northwest Yachts VIDEOS

Northwest Yachts are designed by Steve Seaton, a 40-year veteran who is responsible for over 400 different yacht builds, many of which are long-range cruisers. The hard-chined, semi-displacement hulls provide exceptional stability while both at cruise or at anchor. The keels on all of the Northwest models are long and wide which result in outstanding directional stability and a lot of headroom within the engine compartments.  The experience with buying a Northwest Yacht doesn’t stop there, however. With every new boat purchase, the delivery process exceeds all expectations as a representative from Northwest Yachts will conduct a comprehensive training program to insure that the new captain is familiar with how to handle their new yacht, including all systems operations and what maintenance the new owner can expect in the future. Business | south florida yacht brokers hit with lawsuits that claim 10% commissions violate antitrust laws.

Yachts are among the vessels seen on display in this 2019 file photo in Palm Beach County. Two new lawsuits, filed in 2024, aim to upend years-old ways of awarding commissions to brokers representing boat sellers and buyers. (South Florida Sun Sentinel file photo)

Two newly filed federal lawsuits claim that 10% sales commissions required by South Florida’s yacht broker industry are anticompetitive and violate antitrust laws.

The claims follow an October finding by a federal jury in Kansas City, Missouri, that the National Association of Realtors conspired with brokers to artificially inflate commissions paid to real estate brokers. The ruling, and a March 15 settlement by the Realtors, is expected to radically change how homes are sold in the United States.

Both lawsuits involving yacht brokers name as defendants the International Yacht Brokers Association, based in Fort Lauderdale, the Yacht Brokers Association of America, Boats Group LLC and YATCO LLC.

Also listed as defendants in both suits are a who’s who of South Florida-based yacht brokers, including Denison Yacht Sales, MarineMax Inc., Galati Yacht Sales Inc., Allied Marine Inc., Tournament Yacht Sales LLC and Northrop & Johnson Yacht Ships, among others.

Nearly all of the defendants are headquartered in South Florida.

The most recent suit, filed on March 22, proposes a class of plaintiffs that includes anyone who listed vessels on certain Multiple Listing Services using a listing agent or broker affiliated with one of the defendants and paid a buyer’s broker commission since March 22, 2020.

The lead plaintiff in the lawsuit is Kip Lamar Snell, identified as an Alabama resident. Snell entered into an agreement with Galati to sell a 41-foot Express Cruiser Sea Ray in July 2020 and ended up paying a $12,000 commission on the $120,000 sale price, the suit states. The lawsuit lists as defendants 15 brokers and six organizations that promote the yacht trade or operate Multiple Listing Services.

That lawsuit follows one filed on Feb. 29 that proposes a class of plaintiffs that includes anyone who paid a commission to a listing broker affiliated with the defendants since Feb. 19, 2020. It lists as defendants 11 brokers and five organizations that promote the yacht trade or operate Multiple Listing Services.

The lead plaintiff in that suit is Ya Mon Expeditions, a Wyoming company that paid a “substantial broker commission” when it sold a vessel in January 2023 while represented by Tournament Yacht Sales of Tequesta.

The most recent complaint accuses the trade associations of colluding with brokers to “enforce an anticompetitive restraint that requires (sellers of pre-owned yachts and boats) to pay a brokerage fee to the buyer’s broker and a total aggregate commission fee that is inflated as a condition for selling their yachts.”

The complaint states the typical commission is 10% and is shared between the seller’s broker and the buyer’s broker under terms spelled out in Central Listing Agreements provided by the brokers associations, including the International Yacht Brokers Association and the Yacht Brokers Association of America.

Only boat brokers are able to list boats and yachts on such Multiple Listing Services as YachtWorld.com, BoatTrader.com and Boats.com, and the Multiple Listing Services will not accept listings from owners who want to sell their vessels themselves, the lawsuit states.

Yacht owners are “severely disadvantaged” if they do not list their boats for sale on the listing services, while buyers suffer because their brokers are “financially incentivized” to show boats that will earn them standard “and inflated” commission rates of 4% to 5% through co-brokerage transactions, the complaint states.

None of the defendants contacted for this story responded to a request for comment, and no response has been filed yet in either case.

Robert Allen Jr., whose Miami-based law firm Robert Allen Law represents the International Yacht Brokers Association, did not respond to emails or return a phone call.

A woman who answered the phone at the International Yacht Brokers Association said, “We have no comment on that,” and hung up after a reporter asked for her name.

Of six brokers contacted for comment about the lawsuits, only Tournament Yacht Sales responded to emails. “No comment,” the company’s response stated.

Overall commissions have increased faster than the rate of inflation in recent years as the price of larger boats and yachts have increased, according to the lawsuit that lists Snell as lead plaintiff.

The result is that boat owners pay “hundreds of millions of dollars” in inflated commissions each year, the suit alleges.

Both lawsuits allege violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act that are upheld by “brokers who should be competing with one another but, instead, cooperate with each other to the detriment of pre-owned boat sellers.”

Some brokerages represent both buyers and sellers and retain the entire 10% commissions, the suits state.

The trade associations enforce rules requiring brokers to offer their boats through a listing service and to share commissions, the suits state, adding that they can impose significant penalties on members who do not comply with their rules.

Yacht purchasers are disadvantaged by the current system, the lawsuit alleges, because their agents would otherwise negotiate for their business by decreasing their commission rates.

But buyer brokers’ commissions have remained constant despite their diminishing role, the suits state. Many buyers today find boats they are interested in purchasing through online searches and enlist the services of a buyer’s broker only after identifying the yacht they want to buy, the suits claim.

The lawsuits seek an order declaring the commission structure to be illegal, a permanent injunction outlawing what they describe as anticompetitive conduct, plus damages and/or restitution, pre- and post-judgment interest, and attorneys’ fees.

Paul Geller, an attorney for one of two law firms representing the class that includes Snell, acknowledged “parallels between the allegations relating to commissions in the real estate and yacht markets.”

In the real estate matter, the National Association of Realtors on March 15 agreed to a $418 million proposed settlement that would free home sellers from paying commissions to brokers for both sellers and buyers.

After a jury ruled for the plaintiffs in the case against the National Association of Realtors in October, numerous lawsuits were filed across the country with similar allegations, including one in December against the Florida Association of Realtors and 16 brokerages.

“At bottom, the goals of (the suit against the yacht brokers) are similar: protecting consumers by challenging what we allege to be anti-competitive conduct,” Geller said by email. “We believe in the universal truth that consumers benefit by increased transparency and the competitive pricing that results from negotiated terms, including commissions.”

Geller is a partner at Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP, which specializes in securities litigation on behalf of investors. The firm has offices in 10 cities, including Boca Raton.

UConn ends Northwestern’s NCAA Tournament run, Boo Buie’s career with Wildcats

NEW YORK — Tears welled in the eyes of Northwestern coach Chris Collins as he made a call he had been dreading.

For five years, point guard Boo Buie worked to bring the Wildcats into relevance. And as Collins called his name with just more than a minute left in ninth-seeded NU’s game Sunday against top-seeded UConn in the second round in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament , it marked the end of the line.

There was just one more message Collins had for Buie in the Wildcats’ 75-58 loss to the defending champion Huskies.

‘‘He told me, ‘Thank you,’ ’’ Buie said. ‘‘He told me how fun it was to coach me. We talked about the things that we’ve built over the last couple of years and how proud of each other we are.’’

The two stood locked in an embrace in front of NU’s bench for what seemed like an eternity. When they finally let go of each other, Buie made his way down the bench, passing out hugs along the way.

Legend. Forever. 💜 pic.twitter.com/0QqmUxpMQY — Northwestern Basketball (@NUMensBball) March 25, 2024

‘‘I’m thankful for him,’’ an emotional Collins said through tears. ‘‘He’s set the standard. He’s the GOAT for our program for what he’s done, not only with the records and his legacy as a winner but the credibility he’s helped give our program.’’

Collins was hoping he had a couple of more games left with Buie, but UConn was a steamroller that couldn’t be stopped. It took little time for the Huskies to get humming like a well-oiled machine at the Barclays Center.

That’s how coach Dan Hurley’s team operates, like a brand-new car with a fresh tank of gas. All it needs is someone to start it up.

On Sunday, it was guard Tristen Newton who got his team going with a transition layup off a defensive rebound from 7-2 center Donovan Clingan. The Wildcats (22-12) ‘‘emptied the tank’’ but couldn’t keep up.

Collins said it himself the day before: NU would have to execute to near perfection even to have a chance. But there was no perfection to be found against the Huskies (33-3).

‘‘They have all the ingredients to win another championship,’’ Collins said.

Hopefuls might say the presences of center Matthew Nicholson (right foot) and guard Ty Berry (left knee) would have made a difference, but the reality is that it’s unlikely either would have made a significant impact on the outcome.

Newton finished with 20 points and 10 assists, and Clingan dominated inside with 14 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks.

UConn picked up Buie full court throughout the game. The Huskies fought over screens, making it so that even a piece of paper might have had trouble getting in between them and Buie.

Indeed, Buie’s first field goal of the game didn’t come until halfway through the second half. He finished with nine points, shooting 2-for-15 from the field and going 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Still, in his final game for the Wildcats, Buie’s effort never wavered. Even with his team trailing by more than 15 points for the entire second half, he never slowed. He was fouled while making a driving layup with about five minutes left, and his free throw cut NU’s deficit to 16.

The Wildcats never got closer, however.

We were vacationing in Moscow, and spur of the moment decided to try to see if we could get the Sapsan train to St. Petersburg for an overnight. I had last been there when it was called Leningrad in the 1970's, and my husband had never been. . .

We checked in, downed our "welcome" drink and left our suitcase, and ran back out after finding out the best Metro (Admiralteyskaya) for the museum. The day we got there was a Thursday- the first Thursday of the month - so it was free to get in the Hermitage, and we had to wait on line for a bit (mostly locals, young couples and families going in). We finally entered about noon. The temperature had gone up to 43 F, the day was wonderful- we certainly hadn't minded standing in the unexpected sun.

The Hermitage was everything I remembered - beautiful. I've always wanted to come back. My husband and I wandered from one room to another, one floor to another, following our map until I'm pretty sure in those six hours we had done a very quick round of most everything there was to see. The architecture, the inlaid floors, the exhibits - even the exhibit cases - it was all amazing. We went out and took a walk on the Neva before the sun set (not something we Californians get to do too often) and then headed back on the Metro to our room.

The dinner at the hotel was very good, and the room itself was incredibly comfortable. We debated whether to try to get out to the Catherine Palace the next morning (we only had half a day) and emailed one tourguide, but they weren't able to accommodate our late request (we have something for the next trip!). The next morning we caught the hotel shuttle to the Palace Square and wandered down to Nevsky Prospekt, past the Kazan Cathedral and to The Savior on Spilled Blood. It was another beautiful day. There were hardly any tourists around, not many people at all- and I felt as though we were incredibly lucky to have such mild weather in early March.

We went back to Moskovsky station and caught the 15:10 train back to Moscow for Friday evening rush hour. So very glad we made the quick journey!

Thanks for the TR - so it can be done bottom line. Too bad you missed Catherine's palace but something had to be sacrificed given your tight sked.

Yes, you were very lucky, this March is incredibly warm ) A halfday might be not enough for a visit to Pushkin given your departure time, so you've done your best of your time on the second day here. How did you like the Sapsan train?

Northwest Motor Yachts from 52′ to 70′

Northwest Motor Yachts are not “cookie cutter” models. Each Steve Seaton designed boat Northwest Yachts builds is tailored to the individual requirements of its’ owner. The size, layout, styling, hull configuration and construction materials are carefully considered in the creation of your new boat; one built just for you.

For open ocean, coastal, near coastal and inside passage cruising, our semi-displacement, FRP constructed Trawler series are the perfect configuration. This gives the owner the option of cruising at displacement speeds for economy or, for when it is needed, cruise at speeds up to 12 knots (depending upon engine selection). Northwest Motor Yachts are built standard as a twin engine configuration optionally as a single. Northwest Motor Yachts are available with engine sizes that will allow for faster cruising speeds or to achieve top speeds of 18 to 20 knots. For the 52 and 55, Northwest offers the John Deere 6068 (330hp) engine(s) as standard. For the larger models, the John Deere 6090, (500hp), 6135 (750hp) or MAN 1000hp engines are available.
