The principal owner was heavily involved in the boat’s design. Though he passed away a few years after taking delivery in May 2010, the yacht has remained in the family. Phoenix 2 was his second Winch-designed yacht, but his first new build.
The former, also named Phoenix , was penned for a different owner who had requested a Parisian art-deco theme. Phoenix 2 was the boat that he wanted to build, and New York was his art-deco city of choice.
“The owner was a powerful businessman and very proud of it,” says Dixon. “He wanted Phoenix 2 to reference the boom time of 1920s New York—the art-deco architecture and that period of industrialization. It was much stronger in character than his previous yacht.”
In a subtle nod to the Big Apple, the external side decks are large enough for two people to comfortably walk abreast, and the New York skyline is outlined in polished stainless-steel on the upper deck bar stools. A more overt example of the theme is the plated stainless-steel Phoenix sculpture on the bow, which is a direct representation of the eagles on the Chrysler building.
“The owner wanted his yacht to be longer than his friend’s, so we welded and bolted on a 16-foot phoenix figurehead on the bow,” Andrew Winch told Robb Report . “It’s absolutely enormous, weighs 5.5 tons and gave the owner the extra 16 feet he was looking for.”
The interior keeps to four main colors—black, cream, gold and burgundy—with high-gloss macassar wood and gold leaf used to reflect 1920s glamor.
Adjacent is a round room with a reinforced floor where a custom black-and-gold Steinway piano sits. Designed as a one-off, it has a phoenix emblazoned on its side and took two years to build. The crew of 28 include a pianist and guitarist, as well as a massage therapist and chocolatier.
“The owner was a consummate host and Phoenix 2 was all about dining, music and entertainment,” says Winch. “He liked to think that his dinner guests became the orchestra, while he was seated at the head as the conductor.”
The yacht also has a spa, gym and hammam for relaxation. A wine cellar is stocked with the finest Italian and Bordeaux wines. The owner’s love of art is evident in the yacht’s prized collection, including a Modigliani in one of the guest suites.
The art-deco theme continues in the lower-deck cinema. On the top deck is a second outdoor cinema and a swimming pool with portholes in the floor to allow natural light to fill the staterooms below. The forward master suite is spread across two levels.
On the main deck is the bedroom, dressing room and ensuite, with another elaborate mural and a vanity table with refrigerated cosmetic drawers. A private spiral staircase leads to the owner’s deck with an observation lounge and office where a desk made from high gloss macassar and mother of pearl inlay takes pride of place.
“The owner felt the panoramic views would be wasted on a master bedroom where he wouldn’t spend as much time,” says Dixon. “A private lounge gives him another level of privacy and is the room the family enjoy spending time in the most.”
One of the few changes made since the original design is an extension to the swim platform. Though the principal didn’t live to enjoy his yacht for as long as hoped, his family has cruised Europe and the Caribbean. “The yacht crosses the Atlantic every year,” Captain Ian Howcroft told Robb Report .
For sale for $134 million with yacht broker Burgess, Phoenix 2 is ready to rise from the ashes and give a modern Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan a chance to foxtrot around the high seas.

A Masterpiece in Every Essence: Onboard M/Y PHOENIX 2
By Emily Dawkins
When it comes to buying and chartering a superyacht, what sets each one apart? Their builder, length, design, amenities and service onboard to name but a few. But what happens when all of these factors come together in perfect unison? Enter the art-deco masterpiece that is PHOENIX 2. Currently listed for sale with Burgess and available for charter with Edmiston, this 90m Lurssen motor yacht truly excels in every single essence.
Stepping onboard PHOENIX 2 transforms the meaning of a luxury superyacht experience. Maintained to an exquisite condition thanks to the dedication of her past Owners, this 90m Lurssen motor yacht transports guests through time to a period of luxurious glamour and opulence.
Delivered in 2010 and refitted in 2019, PHOENIX 2’s interior is nothing short of a spectacle from stern to bow. At the time of her launch, PHOENIX 2 showcased the most expensive interior ever to be installed on a yacht. Thirteen years later, following an extensive refit, her interior continues to dazzle. Attentively curated by Winch Design, the interior design onboard takes inspiration from the skyscrapers of New York and its iconic, thematic skyline, with multiple nods to the famous cityscape seen throughout the 90m's many rooms.
Grand and harmonious are two words to describe her unique main deck dining room; fitting for the orchestral inspiration that the design was based upon. Ornate chairs and custom-made gold murals are adorned with images of musicians from a jazz band, with the head of the table aptly featuring the image of a conductor. A custom grand piano with lavish phoenix details also sits nearby, demanding the attention of the expansive room with its absorbing self-playing attributes.
‘It can look gloomy during the day, but it's at night when this space really comes alive,’ commented PHOENIX 2’s Captain John Lowe. ‘We often do themed evenings including James Bond, Casino Royale, and of course The Great Gatsby, and it just all works incredibly well.’
Next to her impressive musical-themed dining room sits an outstanding sommelier room, featuring several temperature-controlled fridges and stores to curate the perfect wine-tasting experience. In the other direction, a comfortable yet stylish circular lounge offers respite from an evening’s party, all perfectly in keeping with the New York art deco theme.
On the upper deck, PHOENIX 2 continues to ooze opulence and entertaining options, from her stylish sky-scraper-themed bar with Empire State Building bar stools, to the glamorous winter garden dining room, which offers guest dining in open air or climate control. A spectacular aluminium spiral staircase connecting each deck eventually leads to the tank deck, which is home to the Radio City-inspired cinema complete with popcorn machine: the perfect place to escape to for a quiet movie night.
A hammam, massage and beauty room, as well as a fully equipped gym, are situated on the bridge deck, and an extraordinary 7m oval pool and jacuzzi with sunpads await those on the sun deck: the options for relaxation are truly endless.
Forward on the main deck is a haven of privacy and a quiet retreat. The incredible full-beam master suite is adorned in a black and white musical-themed design, only accessible through the main deck or a second sweeping glass spiral staircase which leads from the Owner’s very own upper deck observation lounge, office and outdoor jacuzzi. His-and-her bathrooms with a jacuzzi bath and steam shower can be expanded into one room or kept separate, and one of the double walk-in wardrobes can be hidden for isolated use. Lavish guest accommodation to sleep a total of 14 can be found across two VIP staterooms, 3 double cabins and a twin-berth cabin, each carefully designed to combine peace with luxury.
Due to her sheer size and layout, PHOENIX 2's Owner can remain completely separate from guests if ever required, providing the utmost level of privacy that is not often seen on yachts of the same size. A lift also conveniently provides ease of access from the bridge deck to the tank deck. Every detail of this 90m speaks of extravagance and meticulous design consideration for Owner and guest enjoyment, with each aspect of her interiors completely bespoke and hand-made.
Unsurprisingly, PHOENIX 2’s spectacular features continue outside. An expansive beach club is situated aft, presenting an extra bound of space which closens the experience on the water, perfect for dinner parties, BBQs or simply relaxing near the waves; an experience only heightened by an impressive four-metre-deep swim platform complete with hydraulic bathing steps.
In regard to enjoyment on the water, PHOENIX 2 is equipped with two 10m tenders and an array of watersports toys including jet skis, kayaks and diving equipment. Two helipads can be found onboard: one aft, and one touch-and-go pad on the foredeck.
‘With a gym, hammam, spa, cinema, eight bedrooms, large terraces, large dining facilities and large lounges: you get everything you need onboard PHOENIX 2. But you also get the separation that an Owner looks for,’ explains Burgess’ Senior Partner, Director, and Senior Sales Broker, Rupert Nelson.
‘ There are two spaces on this boat that I think are incredibly unique. The first is the duplex at the front which is split-level: something very rare on a yacht that could also be an entirely separate room. Then you have the incredible beach club which is extremely rare as well. Ultimately, yachts are about living outside, so what's the point in having a beach club that is covered when you can have one just above sea level onboard PHOENIX 2. Ultimately, you’re right next to the water, something seldom seen in the superyacht fleet.’
PHOENIX 2 is an embodiment of art deco allure and Manhattan-style glamour, abundant in amenities and features for every owner or charter’s dream superyacht experience. Undoubtedly, she has set a new standard for superyacht design and luxury across the industry: a vessel not to be compared to.
PHOENIX 2 is currently listed for sale with Burgess for €124,950,000 million EU VAT Paid, and is available for charter with Edmiston from €1,150,000 per week. Get in touch with the teams at Burgess and Edmiston today to find out more.

PHOENIX 2 is ‘THE best value 90m Lurssen – ever’
Published 16 April 2024
As the 90.1m (295.5ft) Lurssen PHOENIX 2 nears the end of a six-month refit at MB92 in Barcelona, Rupert Nelson outlines why there’s never been quite such a compelling proposition on the large yacht market.
How extensive has the winter refit been?
It’s been incredibly thorough. It’s included new antifoul, new hull paint up to the upper deck, main engine servicing by MTU, stabiliser servicing by Quantum, servicing of the Brunvoll bow thruster and Schottel stern thruster, HVAC servicing, the list is huge and includes her Lloyd’s intermediate class survey.
The seller has decided to invest several million euros in ensuring she remains in pristine operational and cosmetic condition for her next owner. She will be like new.
What makes PHOENIX 2 stand out in today’s market?
What doesn’t make her stand out? This is a 90m Lurssen designed inside and out by Winch. Those are two of the biggest names in this industry so of course she’s outstanding. What I don’t think is widely understood is the fact that, at EUR 124,950,000 (EU VAT paid), she offers unbelievably good value.
If you analyse this market, as I have every day for the last 35 years, and you look at the prices yachts are selling for in the 85m-plus market, that is quite exceptional value. I’d go so far as to say that PHOENIX 2 is THE best value 90m Lurssen on the market – ever. It’s as simple as that.
Replacement cost I’d estimate at EUR 225-250,000,000, so getting on for double what she’s asking. If you look at comparable yachts on the market today, many of them are north of EUR 200,000,000. This is a pretty much as-new, commercially compliant 90m Lurssen that’s clearly been cherished, about to relaunch after a multi-million euro refit, and her only obligation after that is a six-week multiple-repeat charter that will net her owner a substantial sum.
What are the next steps for clients interested in PHOENIX 2?
She is scheduled to relaunch in mid-May following sea trials and class annuals. After that, the charter aside, she is available to go cruising right away. The seller is keen to move on to their next project so if the right offer comes in, they will be ready to negotiate an acceptable closing price and PHOENIX 2 will have a new owner.
We’re hoping she’ll be in Monaco for the Grand Prix weekend (25-27 May) so that would be a great time to get on board. "Outrageous corporate greed" —
Ceo of failing hospital chain got $250m amid patient deaths, layoffs, bankruptcy, steward health care system, run by ceo ralph de la torre, filed for bankruptcy in may..
Beth Mole - Aug 20, 2024 9:20 pm UTC
As the more than 30 hospitals in the Steward Health Care System scrounged for cash to cover supplies, shuttered pediatric and neonatal units, closed maternity wards, laid off hundreds of health care workers, and put patients in danger, the system paid out at least $250 million to its CEO and his companies, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal .
The newly revealed financial details bring yet more scrutiny to Steward CEO Ralph de la Torre, a Harvard University-trained cardiac surgeon who, in 2020, took over majority ownership of Steward from the private equity firm Cerberus. De la Torre and his companies were reportedly paid at least $250 million since that takeover. In May, Steward, which has hospitals in eight states , filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Critics—including members of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP)—allege that de la Torre stripped the system's hospitals of assets, siphoned payments from them, and loaded them with debt, all while reaping huge payouts that made him obscenely wealthy.
Alleged greed
For instance, de la Torre sold the land under the system's hospitals to a large hospital landlord, Medical Properties Trust, leaving Steward hospitals on the hook for large rent payments. Under de la Torre's leadership, Steward also paid a management consulting firm $30 million a year to "provide executive oversight and overall strategic directive." But, de la Torre was the majority owner of the consulting firm, which also employed other Steward executives. As the WSJ put it, Steward "effectively paid its CEO’s firm, which employed Steward executives, for executive management services for Steward."
In 2021, while the COVID-19 pandemic strained hospitals, Steward distributed $111 million to shareholders. With de la Torre owning 73 percent of the company at the time, his share would have been around $81 million, the WSJ reported. That year, de la Torre bought a 190-foot yacht for $40 million. He also owns a $15 million custom-made luxury fishing boat called Jaruco . The Senate Help Committee, meanwhile, notes that a Steward affiliate owned two jets, one valued at $62 million and a second "backup" jet valued at $33 million.
In 2022, de la Torre got married in an elaborate wedding on Italy's Amalfi Coast and bought a 500-acre Texas ranch for at least $7.2 million. His new wife, Nicole Acosta, 29, is a competitive equestrian who trains at a facility near the ranch. She competes on a horse that was sold in 2014 for $3.5 million, though it's unclear how much the couple paid for it. Besides the ranch, de la Torre, 58, owns an 11,108-square-foot mansion in Dallas valued at $7.2 million, the WSJ reported.
While de la Torre was living a lavish lifestyle, Steward hospitals faced dire situations—as they had for years. An investigation by the Senate HELP committee noted that Steward had shut down several hospitals in Massachusetts, Ohio, Arizona, and Texas between 2014 and this year, laying off thousands of health care workers and leaving communities in the lurch. It closed several pediatric wards in Massachusetts and Texas; in Florida, it closed neonatal units and eliminated maternity services. In Louisiana, Steward patients faced "immediate jeopardy."
“Third-world medicine”
In a July hearing , Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), ranking member of the HELP Committee, spoke of the conditions at Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe, Louisiana, which Steward allegedly mismanaged. "According to a report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a physician at Glenwood told a Louisiana state inspector that the hospital was performing 'third-world medicine,'" Cassidy said.
Further, "one patient died while waiting for a transfer to another hospital because Glenwood did not have the resources to treat them," the Senator said. "Unfortunately, Glenwood is not unique," he went on. "At a Steward-owned Massachusetts hospital, a woman died after giving birth when doctors realized mid-surgery that the supplies needed to treat her were previously repossessed due to Steward’s financial troubles." The hospital reportedly owed the supplier $2.5 million in unpaid bills.
Additionally, the WSJ investigation dug up records that showed that a pest control company discovered 3,000 bats living in one of Steward's Florida hospitals. In Arizona, a Phoenix-area hospital was without air conditioning during scorching temperatures, and its kitchen was closed for health-code violations. The state ordered it to shut down last week.
"Dr. de la Torre and his executive teams’ poor financial decisions and gross mismanagement of its hospitals is shocking," Cassidy said. "Patients’ lives are at risk. The American people deserve answers."
Senate HELP Committee Chair Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) went further, saying that the US health care system "is designed not to make patients well, but to make health care executives and stockholders extraordinarily wealthy. ... Perhaps more than anyone else in America, Ralph de la Torre, the CEO of Steward Health Care, epitomizes the type of outrageous corporate greed that is permeating throughout our for-profit health care system."
Sanders lamented how de la Torre's payouts could have instead benefited patients and communities, asking: "How many of Steward’s hospitals could have been prevented from closing down, how many lives could have been saved, how many health care workers would still have their jobs if Dr. de la Torre spent $150 million on high-quality health care instead of a yacht, two private jets and a luxury fishing boat?"
On July 25, the committee voted 16–4 to subpoena de la Torre so they could ask him such questions in person. To date, de la Torre has refused to voluntarily appear before the committee and declined to comment on the WSJ report. The committee's vote marks the first time since 1981 that it has issued a subpoena.
Separately, Steward and de la Torre are under investigation by the Department of Justice over allegations of fraud and corruption in a deal to run hospitals in Malta .

George Floyd
Thomas lane, former cop convicted in george floyd's death, released from prison.
A former Minneapolis police officer convicted in the death of George Floyd was released from prison Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed to ABC News.
Thomas Lane, 41, pleaded guilty in May 2022 to state charges of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to dismiss charges against him for aiding and abetting second-degree unintentional murder.
He was sentenced to three years in prison for the state charges.
Previously, in February 2022, a federal jury convicted Lane -- as well as two other former officers -- for violating Floyd's civil rights when they failed to intervene in his murder in May 2020.
He was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for the federal charges.
Lane served the two sentences concurrently at FCI Englewood in Colorado. His sentence on federal charges expired earlier this year, according to a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson, while his sentence on state charges ended Tuesday.
Lane will spend the next year on supervised release, a spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Corrections told ABC News.
Derek Chauvin -- the officer who kneeled on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes, killing him -- was convicted on murder charges and sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison.
In a move unrelated to Lane, Chauvin was moved to a federal prison in Big Springs, Texas, on Tuesday , according to a source familiar with the situation. Chauvin was stabbed at a federal prison in Phoenix last November.
In the wake of Floyd's murder, protests against racial injustice and police brutality broke out across the U.S. and even internationally, drawing millions.
"Thomas Lane served his time and paid his debt to society. I wish him well in his re-entry into his community," Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said in a statement to Duluth ABC affiliate WDIO .
ABC News' Luke Barr contributed to this report.

PHOENIX 2 for sale
With her owner-inspired shimmering Art Deco interiors and Manhattan-style glamour, together with Winch Design, PHOENIX 2 dazzles inside and out with the promise of legendary entertainment. You can almost see Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan foxtrotting around the gilt-and-black lacquer Steinway in the main deck ballroom. A grand dining table is overlooked by the swinging six-piece jazz band in custom-made gold bas-relief murals as a crystal chandelier dazzles overhead with fine wines from the sommelier room next door. You’ve arrived.
New York and its skyline were the inspiration for this yacht’s styling, from the Empire State skyscrapers on the bar stools in the sky lounge bar, lit by uplighters reminiscent of the torch held by the Statue of Liberty, to the firebird figurehead that looks as if it may have flown in from the Chrysler Building. Everything, from the door handles to the cutlery, is hand-made, each a work of art in its own right.
From the ballroom, move aft past the full-height windows, circular lounge and onto the aft deck, where a spiral staircase leads up to the upper deck and the emphasis on good times continues. Past the buffet lounge is a winter garden with guest dining in open air or climate control, as conditions dictate, then continue down the boardwalk-style sidedecks to the jacuzzi lounge.
After a night of revelry, head to the bridge deck. Take the rivetted-aluminium spiral staircase or the elevator, which runs from the tank deck, home to the Radio City-inspired cinema with popcorn maker, to the bridge deck, and you’ll find a gym overlooking the aft helipad (there is a second on the foredeck). Sweat it out in the hammam or have a massage in the beauty salon. After that, the sun deck beckons, with its 7m (23ft) oval pool with skylights filtering natural light into the lobby below. Then soak up the sun or snooze in the shade on the sunpads and sun lounges.
To get ashore, take the elevator to the lower deck lobby where one of two 10m (32.8ft) tenders is waiting to take you wherever you want to go. For using an armada of watertoys however, the place to be is the 4m (13.1ft)-deep swim platform, complete with hydraulic bathing steps.
The full-beam owner’s suite, forward on the main deck, is similarly bewitching. Accessed from the main deck or via a glass spiral staircase from the owner’s private observation lounge and office on the upper deck. The circular sweep of the windows and their wraparound views is echoed in the black circle in the carpet and the recessed lighting overhead. A spectacular his-and-hers bathrooms in contrasting marbles features a bath and a steam shower and one of the walk-in wardrobes can be concealed should her new owner wish to operate her commercially.
With a range of 6,000nm and Quantum stabilisers, this impeccably maintained 2,667GT yacht, fresh from a 2019 refit, defies limits on what is possible.
