An unfinished 168-foot superyacht abandoned in 2007 just sold after going up for auction with bids starting at $1.5 million — see inside the 40% complete yacht

• An unfinished superyacht abandoned just before the Great Recession was up for auction starting at $1.5 million.
• The 168-foot motoryacht could cost between $16 million to $25 million to complete.
• Take a look at the nearly half-finished motoryacht that was just sold on November 15.

The auction for a 168-foot superyacht starting at only $1.5 million — an absolute steal — has officially closed.

The catch? It's only about 40% finished and the winning bidder is now responsible for bringing the 168-foot Trinity Tri-Deck yacht to life.

The final sales price of the vessel, sold through Boathouse Auctions, is not public.

But Jack Mahoney, a director at Boathouse Auctions, told Insider in an email that there were 32 interested groups that resulted in three final bids.

And both the buyer and seller were ultimately "pleased with the outcome," Mahoney said.

Yacht and boat sales have continued to skyrocket throughout the COVID-19 pandemic with some ultra-luxury yachts selling for millions of dollars above their initial asking price.

And the ultra-wealthy's demand for luxury homes at sea has yet to slow down.

Superyacht sales hit a record high in 2021 even as manufacturers struggled to keep up with demand amid supply chain and staffing problems.

This incomplete yacht may not be turnkey like the other vessels that have been sold during superyacht market's boom, but at least it is semi-customizable.

The previous owner of the 168-foot Trinity was formerly owner of the now-defunct luxury yacht-building company Trinity Yachts.

In the face of the Great Recession, the project was abandoned in 2007 when it was only 40% complete.

Since then, the half-finished semi-displacement yacht had been stuck in storage where it was regularly checked.

After several years, the vessel was finally put up for auction on Boathouse Auctions starting at a cool $1.5 million …

… a bargain compared to other — albeit complete — superyachts.

For now, the motoryacht is just a nearly completed shell of its potential (the aluminum hull and superstructure are about 95% done).

But picture its potential as a six-stateroom, four-deck yacht with luxurious amenities like an elevator.

Of the six staterooms, four for guests and two for the crew.

The customizable yacht can also accommodate spaces like a galley, formal dining area, owner's lounge …

… deck with a 12-person dining table …

… several salons, and an outdoor lounge on the sun deck.

It obviously wouldn't be a luxury superyacht without a large sun deck.

The current owner can build out this lounge by adding a bar, dinette, outdoor galley, and more lounge seats to create the perfect space to bask under the afternoon sun.

And when it's time to cool off in the water, the owners can head to the garage for access to toys like jet skis and a jet tender.

Along with the half-complete motoryacht, the highest bidder also received several parts like engines and a watertight door …

… as well as some help from the original Trinity Yacht's design and engineering team.

When it's finally complete, the home at sea will be able to hit up to 23 knots with a less than eight-foot draft.

But to finish the project, its owner will have to cough up at least $16 million for lower-end finishes, according to estimates from shipyards in Greece and Turkey, Mahoney, told Insider in October.

If they want top-of-the-line amenities, the project could cost upwards of $25 million.

To compare, buying a new yacht of this similar size could cost over $35 million, according to the 168-foot Trinity 2007's listing page.

Offers are accumulated weekly through each Monday at 4:00 PM ET. In the event a particular Monday is a Federal Holiday, the deadline is extended an additional 24 hours. The high offer on a particular vessel is submitted to the Seller for consideration the following business day. The Seller, at its sole option, may accept or reject with or without a counter offer. Responses typically occur within 48 hours, no response constitutes a rejection of theoffer.

Upon notification of acceptance of an offer (either verbal or electronic), successful Bidder has 1 business day to deposit into National Liquidators escrow account, the greater of 10% of Gross Offer or $1,000.

Upon notification of acceptance of an offer (either verbal or electronic), successful Bidder has 5 business days to complete any and all conditions listed above in the “Conditions Of Offer”. In any case, any remaining amounts due must be deposited into National Liquidators escrow account, within 5 business days after notification of acceptance of an offer (either verbal or electronic). Successful Bidder’s failure to fund the total offer price within 5 business days after notice of acceptance will result in forfeiture of any deposits. In these instances, the vessel will be placed back into the auction cycle.

After funding the total offer price, Successful Bidder must remove the purchased vessel from National’s storage facility within two business days or make storage arrangements with National. Storage charges will accrue on ALL purchased vessels until each is removed from National’s storage facility. All vessels are sold AS IS, WHERE IS, with no warranties or representations, express or implied, as to condition or fitness for a particular purpose.

NOTICE REGARDING TITLING OR US COAST GUARD DOCUMENTATION

National Liquidators makes no guarantees, representations or warranties as to title or the ability to document or register the vessel. National Liquidators are acting as a broker only and issues as to title, documentation and registration are between the Buyer and the Seller, owner or lien holder. The required $399.00 administrative fee covers National’s efforts to obtain titling and documentation information from the Seller; it does not include transfer of title or documentation to Buyer. National Liquidators can process transfer of title or documentation to Buyer an additional fee. Buyers that are interested in this service can contact National’s title department for details, including charges. Ohio Law requires National to transfer title (not USCG documentation) directly to Ohio residents only, a $150 fee is charged for this service.

“A notice to the newspapers and other media will be published for a period of 10 days, notifying the sale of the Alfa Nero vessel in order to satisfy the requirements under the law for a forced sale,” a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda read. “If the owner fails to claim the vessel within that time period, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda will sell it to the highest bidder.”

Delivered in 2007 by Oceanco, Alfa Nero features a striking exterior by Nuvolari Lenard and interior styling by Alberto Pinto that together have landed the yacht a number of awards. The beautiful behemoth notably features six staterooms, accommodation for 28 crew, a hydraulically operated pool and a large helipad aft. Alfa Nero was sold in 2011 to its current owner with an asking price of $115 million, according to Marine Industry News . The Guardian has previously reported that the yacht is linked to the Russian oligarch (and Putin ally) Andrey Guryev.

The Antigua and Barbuda government reportedly consulted with the US authorities prior to taking the action. During a media briefing, Information Minister Melford Nicholas told reporters that any proceeds from the sale of Alfa Nero would remain in the Antiguan government’s hands, but the US could request access to the funds in the future.

Hundreds of abandoned boats dumped around Devon and Cornwall

It's been called the fly-tipping of the maritime world. Hundreds of plastic boats are dumped on foreshores and tidal creeks around Devon and Cornwall. The problem is costing authorities thousands of pounds, harming the environment and can be seen from space but dealing with it has, in some cases, become "torturous".

Sinking into the mud of Hooe Lake the 65ft (20m) former fishing boat, 'Dignity', sheds her toxic paint into the sediment.

She is just one of hundreds of boats to lie abandoned on the shores and tidal creeks of Devon and Cornwall posing a risk to the environment.

Hooe Lake in Plymouth is one of the places which has become a graveyard for the giant pieces of waste.

Dr Andrew Turner, a marine scientist from the University of Plymouth, said: "It's like a form of fly-tipping, you have one abandoned boat and other people think well, this is a good place to put my boat and before you know it you've got several boats there.

"Some of them have asbestos on them, oils, batteries and aside from that there's the aesthetic impact.

"It's something that needs looking at seriously," he said.

In a report for the European Commission, it is said that up to 130,000 recreational boats reach the end of their life across Europe every year.

"You go to any creek or estuary in the South West and you will see abandoned boats," Dr Turner said.

The Dignity was shedding Tributyltin - a potent anti-fouling paint that was later banned due to its toxicity.

"One of the key things it was doing was causing molluscs to change sex in the marine environment on exposure to extremely small concentrations," explained Dr Turner.

"It was later found to be toxic to pretty much anything."

Many of the abandoned vessels are made with glass reinforced plastic (GRP), also known as fibreglass, a notoriously difficult composite to break down, and most will end up in landfill.

The region is expected to see a huge rise in the numbers abandoned over the coming years.

Dr Turner said it was difficult to know how many abandoned boats there were as there was no registration system but the problem appeared to be growing.

He said: "We've had a student looking at Google Earth and we believe there are a few hundred around the South West but there might be more that you can't see.

"We started investigating this six or seven years ago and we haven't seen much improvement since then."

Responsibility for the boats, once abandoned, falls on the landowner, or in most cases, the relevant harbour authority.

In Restronguet Creek near Truro in Cornwall there is no harbour authority which means when boats are abandoned, it is often on private land where it is left to the individuals or parish council to deal with.

Jan Pentreath, of the Restronguet Creek Society, a group made up of volunteers which looks after the area, said owners often stripped the boats of any identifying features before dumping them.

"We have seen people bring boats here, drop an anchor and go," he said.

"The reason they do this is it's quite expensive to get rid of them.

"How do you get rid of an eyesore? To get rid you have to advertise it, then the legal situation is quite torturous and of course it is quite expensive," Mr Pentreath added.

"In which case the damn thing just sits there and then they often break adrift."

Further up the creek at Penpol, one abandoned sailing boat did just that.

"It was just drifting around so I collected it to stop it causing a problem," explained landowner, Ashley Butler.

"I did it for community spirit and all that but now I'm the one who has to pay to dispose of it."

There is no official registration system for boats unlike with cars where it is easier to trace an owner.

Phil Horton, of the Royal Yachting Association, said: "There was a vast increase in the manufacturing of boats in the 1960s and 1970s and those will start coming to the end of life soon so now is the time to start looking at solutions before we start getting significant numbers.

"The real problem with end of life boats is that the person that last owns the boat is the person least likely to be able to afford to dispose of the boat properly."

He said the association was working with the British Ports Association to find out "how widespread the problem really is".

GRP boats can be found for sale online for as little as £1.

In some cases boats are slipped from moorings or dumped on harbour authority boundaries at night where dealing with the unserviceable hulks can cost thousands of pounds a time.

One harbour group, which asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, told the BBC its committee members had been "individually threatened" by one boat owner who refused to pay his mooring bill.

Attempts to dispose of the now infamous Durandal - abandoned in the Truro river - were thwarted by poor access.

Truro Harbour Authority said the eventual disposal could cost about £50,000.

In Penzance disposing of an old fishing boat is set to cost the harbour authority £75,000.

Smaller vessels cost between £1,000-2,000 to get rid of.

Truro Harbour Master, Mark Killingback, has dealt with around 20 abandoned boats in the past eight years but said the process was long-winded and fraught with legal challenges.

He said: "In Truro we have to establish there is no legal owner, that they are formally abandoned.

"Potentially a harbour master could be taken to civil court for damaging someone's property so once we've established there is no owner we have to go through a process of appropriate disposal."

Mr Killingback said even though the harbour was owned by Cornwall Council, the revenues of the port paid for any work carried out to protect navigation.

He said this meant it was ultimately other boat owners footing the bill for the abandoned vessels.

10 unusual ABANDONED places in Russia (PHOTOS)

1. A mountainous village in Dagestan

Kahib village is located 160 kilometers from Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan. Its central part consists of the stone ruins built centuries ago on a steep mountainside overlooking the Kahibtlar River.

The ruins are blended into the landscape to a point where they visually merge with the rocks and blend in the environment. On a closer inspection, however, the old abandoned city appears in all its magnificence.

Historians believe these scenic houses and towers appeared in the 8th-10th centuries AD. People may have settled in this inaccessible area to repel invaders more effectively.

2. Grain elevators in Yaroslavl

These eerie looking structures resembling a post-apocalypse movie set are nothing more than the remnants of the Soviet agriculture industry. During Soviet times, these giant concrete structures were used to store strategic reserves of grain and were, therefore, fenced off and closely guarded. Their precise locations were often classified. After the Soviet Union collapsed, many of these strategic structures were abandoned and eventually became dilapidated. Today, these abandoned towers attract occasional visitors.

3. A wingship on the Caspian Sea shore

This Soviet-made ground-effect vehicle rests abandoned on the shore of the Caspian Sea in Dagestan, Russia. The unusual vehicle – known as the ‘Lun ekranoplan’ – used to be a Soviet military project abandoned at the break of the century.

The war machine was created to be used in combat against enemy aircraft carriers and it was supposed to fly close to the surface of the water, thus evading enemy radar systems.

4. A ship graveyard in Murmansk

To “retire” some of its ships, Russia created a few “ship cemeteries” in the Arctic and Pacific oceans. Perhaps the most recognizable ship cemetery is located near the naval base of Russia’s Northern Fleet at Olenya Guba in Murmansk Region. There, dozens of decommissioned ships and even submarines rest after finishing active service in the military. 

5. A diamond mine in Yakutia

Soviet geologists discovered huge diamond reserves in Yakutia in the 1950s. The legend has it that, upon the vital discovery, they sent a coded message to Moscow: “We smoked the peace pipe. The tobacco is great.” Hence the diamond pit’s name: ‘Mir’ [the Russian word for ‘peace’], allegedly named so after the coded messege.

The ‘Mir’ diamond pit grew to be vast: more than 500 meters deep and 1,200 meters in diameter. At some point, developing and maintaining the pit became dangerous and the owner closed it, opting for a newer way to mine diamonds.

The giant open pit that had produced some $17 billion worth of diamonds before it was abandoned. In later years, architects attempted to utilize the open pit to design a project of a futuristic city under a dome, but their plans failed and the mine remains abandoned to this day.

6. A lighthouse on Sakhalin Island

This magnificent abandoned lighthouse has been a tourist attraction for years. Built by the Japanese before the final days of World War II, the lighthouse stands on the Aniva Cape, on one of the most inaccessible places of the island.

Visitors say that the lighthouse may soon become dangerous to visit, as many of its parts have begun to severely deteriorate.

7. A ghost town in Magadan

Ghost town Kadykchan  was abandoned by residents after the authorities decided to close the nearby mines after a bad accident that left six workers dead. Remnants of the city built by Gulag prisoners in the 1940s stand akin sentinels in this eerie area. Although the ghost town was announced depopulated in 2010, rare travelers reported sighting a few residents who refused to leave.

8. A hadron collider in Moscow Region

In the 1980s, Soviet scientists planned to build a hadron collider to study particles. The project required a lot of digging: massive tunnels were constructed underneath the city of Protvino, Moscow Region. When the project stalled after the collapse of the Soviet Union and subsequent lack of funding, the tunnels were also abandoned. They lie 60 meters deep and exceed 20 kilometers in length that attract fans of industrial tourism who go down at their own risk.

9. A Hydroelectric Power Plant in Altai

The Chemalskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant was built in 1935 by some 700 prisoners. An accident happened on the plant in 2010; the structure was partially flooded. Since then, the plant has been out of operation. Sometimes, tourist groups visit the abandoned plant.

10. Villa Porr in Primorsk

There is a ghostly looking villa in the city of primorsk in Kaliningrad Region. It was built around 1905, when the city was known by its German name, Fischhausen.

Its owner, a successful businessman, purchased over 100 hectares of land and constructed a mansion of 13 rooms with a basement and attic. When the city became a Soviet territory after World War II, the building was transferred to the Soviet Ministry of Defense and turned into a sanatorium where tuberculosis was treated.

Today, the villa stands abandoned and eerie, resembling a haunted mansion from a typical horror movie.

New modification of Russian VVER-440 fuel loaded at Paks NPP in Hungary

DECEMBER 14, 2020 — After the recent refueling at power unit 3 of the Hungarian Paks NPP, its VVER-440 reactor has been loaded with a batch of fresh fuel including 18 fuel bundles of the new modification. The new fuel will be introduced at all four operating power units of the Paks NPP, and the amount of new-modification bundles in each refueling will be increased gradually.

Development of the new VVER-440 fuel modification was completed in 2020 under the contract between TVEL JSC and MVM Paks NPP Ltd. Its introduction would optimize the hydro-uranium ratio in the reactor core, enabling to increase the efficiency of fuel usage and advance the economic performance of the power plant operation. All VVER-440 fuel modifications are manufactured at the Elemash Machine-Building Plant, a facility of TVEL Fuel Company in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

“Introduction of a new fuel is an option to improve technical and economic performance of a nuclear power plant without substantial investment. We are actively engaged in development of new models and modifications of VVER-440 fuel for power plants in Europe. The projects of the new fuels for Loviisa NPP in Finland, Dukovany NPP in the Czech Republic, Mochovce and Bohunice NPPs in Slovakia, are currently at various stages of implementation. Despite the same reactor model, these projects are quite different technically and conceptually, since we take into account the individual needs and requirements of our customers,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

The project of development and validation of the new fuel has been accomplished with participation of a number of Russian nuclear industry enterprises, such as OKB Gidropress (a part of Rosatom machine-building division Atomenergomash), Bochvar Institute (material science research facility of TVEL Fuel Company), Elemash Machine-building plant and Kurchatov Institute national research center. At the site of OKB Gidropress research and experiment facility, the new fuel passed a range of hydraulic, longevity and vibration tests.

Paks NPP is the only functioning nuclear power plant in Hungary with total installed capacity 2000 MWe. It operates four similar units powered by VVER-440 reactors and commissioned one by one in 1982-1987. Currently, Paks NPP is the only VVER-440 plant in the world operating in extended 15-monthes fuel cycle. The power plant produces about 15 bln kWh annually, about a half of electric power generation in Hungary. In 2018, the project of increasing the duration of Paks NPP fuel cycle won the European competition Quality Innovation Award in the nomination “Innovations of large enterprises”. Russian engineers from TVEL JSC, Kurchatov Institute, OKB Gidropress, Bochvar Institute and Elemash Machine-building plant provided assistance to the Hungarian colleagues in accomplishment of the project.
