Atlantic Yacht Club: A Brief History

April 12, 2021 by Judith Berdy 1 Comment

atlantic yacht club

The Atlantic Yacht Club’s facilities have moved several times over its history: the first facility was located at the foot of Court Street on Gowanus Bay in Gowanus, Brooklyn; it subsequently moved to a site at the foot of 55th Street in the neighborhood that subsequently became known as Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

In 1898 the club moved to its most famous club-house, located in Seagate. Seagate is located on the western end of Coney Island, and the club facilities were located on the northern, inland, side of Coney Island facing Gravesend Bay.

Atlantic Yacht Club yachts

The Atlantic Yacht Club was organized in 1866 by a breakaway group from the earlier Brooklyn Yacht Club. Within five years its membership roll eclipsed those of the Brooklyn Yacht Club and the club developed a reputation as an active Corinthian sailing organization that attracted many of Long Island’s most prominent citizens and soon drew in members from throughout the region, including prominent sailors.

The Club rapidly developed into one of the most active yacht clubs in New York, hosting regular regattas and competing against the leading yacht clubs in the region. The Club’s annual Atlantic Race Week and Lipton Cup Regatta regularly drew sailors from around the world to compete in multiple classes. The club was also a driving force behind the formation of the United States Power Squadrons in 1914.

The club’s original clubhouse was a barge that was moored at the foot of Court Street at the end of Gowanus Creek, facing Gowanus Bay. Gowanus Creek, and the Erie Basin in Red Hook, Brooklyn served for several decades as a center of the New York sailing and yachting community, and several important boat yards were located in the area. As time passed, however, increasing industrialization in the area led many to relocate to other sites around New York Harbor and, indeed, locations in Long Island Sound. In the early 1880s, the club acquired a waterfront farm property on 55th Street in Yellow Hook, Brooklyn.

The neighborhood subsequently assumed the name of Bay Ridge, a name suggested by club-member, former Commodore and leading Brooklyn florist James Weir. The converted clubhouse was soon replaced by a larger facility constructed at the end of the club’s new pier at the end of 55th Street. A marina and anchorage were established at the same site at that time.

A new clubhouse at Seagate was designed by Frank Tallman Cornell and built in 1898 on Poplar Avenue overlooking Gravesend Bay (the site of the old clubhouse becoming the main yard of the Morse Dry Dock and Repair Company). The move to the new clubhouse was driven in large part by Commodore George Jay Gould I, the prominent financier and a son of Jay Gould. The club attracted New York socialites and aristocrats, including prominent members of the Auchincloss, Dodge, Elsworth, Fish, Gould, Hoagland, Iselin, Vermilye and Voorhees families, among many others. Sir Thomas Lipton, J.P. Morgan and the Earl of Dunraven (the British challenger for the America’s Cup, with his yacht Valkyrie ) were among the club’s members.

At Dumbarton, the yacht Shamrock III is launched, supported on pontoons. Owned by Sir Thomas Lipton

Initially intended as a snub directed at the New York Yacht Club’s largely steam-powered yachting fleet, at Lipton’s recommendation the regatta was encharged to the New York Yacht Club. In due course, the regatta was won by the yacht Atlantic , sponsored by the New York Yacht Club, and skippered by Charlie Barr. Barr, a three-time winner of the America’s Cup, was one of the leading sailors of his day.

The Atlantic sailed to victory in record time, establishing trans-Atlantic mono-hull records that stood for 100 years. The AYC’s entry, the yacht Thistle , a schooner built in 1901 by New York’s Townsend & Dourney and owned and skippered by Robert E Tod, finished 10th. Tod, a New York investment banker, was the only owner-skipper in the regatta.

The Atlantic Yacht Club’s Seagate clubhouse was destroyed by fire in 1933. The club soldiered-on for a number of years thereafter, becoming inactive in the 1950s. It was revived several decades later, in the early 21st century, and today, the AYC operates off Bay Parkway, directly across Gravesend Bay from its earlier Sea Gate location, with a social facility in Brooklyn Heights.

My great-great grandfather, William Van Nyse Hanson, was a ship joiner, was involved in the building of the America, and was an honorasry member of the Atlantic Yacht Club (as well as a Commodore at the Amateur Yacht Club) in the 1800s. How can I find out more information about his relationship to these organizations?

Renowned chef to bring signature butter-poached steaks, duck fat fries to Delray Beach

A globally-recognized restaurant famous for its signature butter-poached steaks and duck fat fries is headed for Palm Beach County.

The Seagate Hotel & Spa has announced it will soon welcome the ninth location of Bourbon Steak to its Delray Beach property.

The Delray Beach restaurant stands as the first Palm Beach County establishment for James Beard award-winning chef Michael Mina, known for his Michelin-starred namesake restaurant and founder of the Mina Group, a collection of more than 30 global restaurants in partnership with Andre Agassi that includes Orla, International Smoke, StripStreak, and Michael Mina at the Bellagio, among others.

Atlantic Grille will close after more than a decade in Delray Beach

On Monday, July 15, the Seagate will close its signature restaurant, Atlantic Grille, which opened in 2009. The move will mark the start of a series of renovations to take place over the next few months including new hotel guest rooms, a refurbished lobby, and updated meeting rooms.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

When complete, Bourbon Steak's updated 6,000 square-foot, 310-seat space will feature a 34-seat bar, outdoor patio seating, and a private dining room that seats up to 24 guests. The restaurant is expected to open in late 2024, and follows the May opening of Bourbon Steak inside the JW Marriott Essex House New York.

According to Alex Schnoeller, managing director for The Seagate, the addition of Bourbon Steak — Mina's ode to the classic American steakhouse — is intended to create a decidedly upscale experience for both hotel visitors and locals.

"Our hotel guests, as well as the many discerning diners flocking to Delray Beach, have created a demand for a Michelin-rated restaurant helmed by an award-winning chef," Schnoeller tells The Palm Beach Post. "We also feel that Bourbon Steak will bring needed vitality to the picturesque beachside area of Atlantic Avenue…and we are thrilled to bring this exciting new restaurant to our hotel, and to the residents of Delray."

The Seagate recently welcomed Dmitriy Kakuschke, who helmed the kitchen as executive chef for Bourbon Steak Nashville since its 2018 opening. Moving forward, Kakuschke will act as executive chef for Bourbon Steak Delray Beach, as well as oversee the culinary teams for the hotel's beach club, yacht club, and golf club, while spearheading seasonal menus.

Renovations at Delray Beach's The Seagate Hotel & Spa continue with clubhouse refresh

The 154-room Seagate Hotel & Spa recently completed a major renovation to The Seagate Golf Club. In December 2023, the property debuted its Joe Lee designed, 18-hole golf course and practice facilities, and renovated 41,064 square-foot clubhouse, which includes a dining room that serves lunch, brunch, and dinner.

As part of its ongoing, property-wide renovations, the Seagate will soon unveil a dramatic refresh to its two-story, 250-seat, 3,500 square-foot oceanfront clubhouse. Established in the 1950s and located at 401 South Ocean Boulevard, the Seagate Beach Club, is open only to members and hotel guests.

The original structure was damaged during Hurricane Wilma in 2005, resulting in a new two-story clubhouse, which closed in May for additional upgrades. Reopening is scheduled for October.

The project will feature architectural and interior design updates by New York’s Dash Design, including an overhaul of the first floor dining area and cocktail bar — each enhanced to maximize the views of the beach and ocean — while the second floor will serve as both a dining and bar lounge with seating set up for cocktails and small bites.

Rebuilding Paradise: The Bitter End Yacht Club’s Inspiring Comeback

By: Shannon Sinnard Destinations

Nestled at the northeastern tip of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, the Bitter End Yacht Club has long been a premier maritime destination for sailors. For years, this iconic resort has drawn seafarers from around the globe, offering a serene escape amidst the sparkling waters of the Caribbean.

While the term “bitter end” often refers to the final part of a rope or chain, the phrase can also signify reaching the farthest point or the end destination of a long or difficult journey. The founders of the Bitter End Yacht Club chose this name to reflect both its geographical location and the spirit of adventure and perseverance inherent to sailors. For those who navigate to this end-of-the-line point, the BEYC stands as a haven where their journey culminates in beauty and tranquility. And, for many, it has long stood as a cherished traditional stop when exploring the waters of the BVI.

A Legendary Past, a Devastating Blow

In more recent years, the Bitter End’s name has embodied not only a physical destination but also a symbolic one. The iconic BEYC experienced a devastating blow in September 2017 when Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in history, wreaked havoc on the Caribbean, leaving the Bitter End Yacht Club in ruins. The devastation was profound, with buildings flattened, boats destroyed, and the once-thriving resort reduced to rubble.

atlantic yacht club

While many Bitter End enthusiasts were devastated to hear of the destruction Hurricane Irma left in her wake, the iconic Bitter End Yacht Club kept its loyal fans updated via its website , detailing both the damage and community efforts to rebuild this beloved BVI institution.

Rising from the Ashes

Having now been rebuilt and risen from the devastation of Hurricane Irma, the Bitter End’s name resonates even more with the idea of enduring and overcoming challenges – much like the sailors who venture to the farthest reaches to get there.

After the storm, the Bitter End Yacht Club faced a long and arduous journey to recovery. But the spirit of resilience and determination among its community never wavered. Fast forward to today, and the Bitter End Yacht Club has not only been rebuilt but has been reimagined, standing as a testament to the power of recovery and the adventurous spirit that made it famous.

A New Era for the Bitter End Yacht Club

The reopening of the Bitter End Yacht Club marks a new chapter in its storied history. The rebuilt resort seamlessly blends the charm and character of its past with modern amenities and environmentally friendly practices. Here’s a glimpse of what visitors can now expect:

State-of-the-Art Marina

The heart of the Bitter End experience, the marina, has been meticulously restored and upgraded, offering deep-water slips that can accommodate yachts up to 200 feet, along with enhanced dockside services. Sailors can enjoy top-notch amenities including electrical hook-ups, fuel, ice, showers, rubbish disposal, and laundry facilities. Additionally, guests have access to the resort’s swimming pool. The BEYC also boasts one of the best deep-water anchorages in the Caribbean, providing many of the same amenities as the docking facilities.

Culinary Delights

Dining at the Bitter End is an experience in itself. The resort’s restaurants feature locally sourced ingredients, celebrating Caribbean flavors with a gourmet twist. Whether it’s a casual beachside meal or an elegant dinner under the stars, the culinary offerings are sure to delight every palate.

Adventure and Exploration

For those with a thirst for adventure, the resort offers a wide range of water sports, including sailing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, and snorkeling. Guests can explore the vibrant coral reefs, embark on a deep-sea fishing expedition, or simply enjoy a leisurely paddle around the bay.

Environmental Stewardship

The Bitter End Yacht Club has embraced sustainability as a core principle in its rebuilding efforts. The resort utilizes renewable energy sources, practices water conservation, and is committed to preserving the natural beauty of the BVI. Initiatives such as coral reef restoration and marine conservation programs are integral to its operations, ensuring that the Bitter End remains a pristine paradise for future generations.

A Bright Future

From its storied past to its recent resurgence, the Bitter End Yacht Club is more than just a return to business; it’s a celebration of resilience, community, and the indomitable spirit of the BVI. As it welcomes back old friends and new, the Bitter End promises to once again be the ultimate retreat for those who seek the thrill of the open sea and the tranquility of an island paradise in one of the most breathtaking locations on earth.

Eight Books That Will Change Your Perspective

One of the joys of reading is encountering someone else’s awakening on the page.

An epiphany isn’t always heralded by trumpets or bolts of lightning. I once had a flash of clarity while unlocking my bike: As if I had also unlocked my mind, I suddenly knew that I had to end the relationship I was in. It was one of those rare moments when you face a truth you’ve been avoiding or see life from a new perspective. The resulting vision isn’t always pretty (I started crying as soon as I got on my bike), but it sparkles with lucidity.

Predicting what will snap you into awareness like this is hard, but one of the joys of reading is encountering someone else’s awakening on the page. Their understanding may gather slowly over the course of the book, or the clouds may suddenly part. You may be one step ahead of a character and itching for them to catch up, or you may be stunned right along with them.

The eight books below chronicle various kinds of life-changing insights—spiritual, moral, political. They are brought about by far-flung journeys, traumatic experiences, and, in one case, exile to Siberia. Each provides a model for how to see with new eyes, as Marcel Proust once said. Although there’s no guarantee that reading about someone else’s epiphany will catalyze your own, the power of these stories may just be enough to spark your next revelation.

Song of Solomon

Song of Solomon , by Toni Morrison

Morrison’s 1977 novel—her third, and the one that really established her literary reputation—is centered on Milkman Dead, a young man living in the Midwest and feeling lost and rudderless. Inspired by a family legend about a buried bag of gold, he leaves home and embarks on a classic hero’s journey, though his is set within the cultural frame of the Black American experience. As Milkman moves deeper into the South, reversing his family’s migration, he encounters figures both mythic and prosaic and defends himself against mortal dangers. Gradually, he realizes that he’s searching not for the treasure, but for clues to his own identity. The novel reads a bit like a detective story: Milkman must piece together scraps of nursery rhymes, local folk tales, mysterious place-names, and riddles. In the glorious moment when he finally succeeds, he is freed from his illusions about himself and his history. Morrison’s gorgeous prose makes you want to leap along with him, “as fleet and bright as a lodestar,” into the clear, sweet air of self-knowledge.

Small Things Like These , by Claire Keegan

This slim, fabular novel, published in 2021, is set in a small Irish village in the 1980s, though its Dickensian overtones and depiction of Irish provincial life make it feel like it could be the 1890s. Bill Furlong, who “had come from nothing,” is now a successful coal merchant and a decent family man raising five daughters. But his goodness hasn’t been tested until he stumbles upon a desperate girl living in a so-called Magdalene laundry, a Catholic home where prostitutes, unwed mothers, and other “fallen women” are forced to work as laundresses under abusive conditions. On a freezing-cold Christmas Eve, Furlong is faced with a choice that pits his conscience against his family, his church, and the whole village. Keegan shows us a man turning toward his higher self, at first by degrees and then in a sudden rush. This little story runs deep enough to shake the foundations of our adherence to social niceties, forcing us to question what we can do to actually improve the lives of others.

Children of the Arbat , by Anatoly Rybako v , translated by Harold Shukman

Rybakov was staunchly loyal to the new regime in postrevolutionary Russia, until he was arrested by Stalin’s secret police and sent to a Siberian gulag for three years. His political disillusionment is recounted in this semi-autobiographical novel, which, because of its anti-Stalinist bent, had to be printed in installments by samizdat (a clandestine network of underground publishers). The title refers to a fashionable Moscow neighborhood, where girls stroll “up and down arm-in-arm, whiling away the time,” donning “the Autumn chic of the Arbat.” The local engineering student Sasha and his friends are eager young members of the Communist Party, but paranoia and misinformation in the higher ranks lead to his arrest and exile, robbing him of his health and youth, and shattering his ideals. A Ukrainian acquaintance told me that nearly everyone in the former U.S.S.R. has read this book (the first of a trilogy), but its fame in the United States seems much more modest. The time might be ripe for Sasha’s travails to rouse Americans from our own political complacency.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings , by Maya Angelou

Angelou’s beloved 1969 memoir is an intimate growing-up story, unfolding first in her grandmother’s house in the “musty little town” of Stamps, Arkansas, then in St. Louis and San Francisco, where she and her brother are sent to live with their glamorous, high-rolling mother. Angelou’s story reveals the effects of racism, sexism, and poverty on her young psyche; the marvel is how she nonetheless continues to insist on her personhood and dignity. When 8-year-old Angelou is sexually abused, she falls silent for a while, and the rest of the memoir is largely the story of her recovering her voice and awakening to its power. An avid reader, she is advised by one of the strong women in her life: “Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with the shades of deeper meaning.” Angelou’s very ability to tell her harrowing story so beautifully—along with the fact that she went on to become such an important figure in American letters—is a testament to the potency of speaking our truth.

The Razor’s Edge , by W. Somerset Maugham

The book that some consider to be Maugham’s greatest, published in 1944, tracks the intersecting lives of a group of friends, all coolly observed by an alter ego of the author. At the center of the story is Larry Darrell, a wounded war veteran who abandons his fiancée, Isabel, and forgoes conventional success in order to embark on a spiritual quest. After several years in India studying with Vedic mystics, he becomes a kind of faith healer, realizing that he is “able to relieve people not only of pain but of fear.” The narrator is skeptical of some of these claims, but throughout the book, Larry’s relentless seeking and life of service are set against the material preoccupations of the other characters, including Isabel, who ends up marrying a millionaire businessman, and Elliott, a successful art dealer and a dissipated rake. Larry’s story represents a more enlightened path, and suggests that we have the capacity for a deeper kind of joy. “Nothing in the world is permanent,” Larry tells the narrator, “and we’re foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we’re still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it.”

The Death of Ivan Ilyich , by Leo Tolstoy, translated by Louise Maude and Aylmer Maude

Tolstoy experienced a spiritual crisis in middle age, turning away from the Russian Orthodox Church and embracing what he saw as the key teaching of Christ: compassion. He renounced his prior works of fiction, including Anna Karenina and War and Peace , as amoral, and concentrated his literary powers on stories that conveyed his newfound understanding. Luckily for us, because he was Tolstoy, these stories, including the 1886 novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich , are far from didactic. Ivan Ilyich is an official of the law courts whose life, which is coming swiftly to a close, has been “most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible.” As his illness progresses, he becomes more self-pitying, harping on how little he deserves his suffering. But at the final hour, he has a sudden conversion, a mirror of Tolstoy’s own, that changes his attitude toward himself, toward others, and toward death itself. Tolstoy strives to transmit the true meaning of life to his readers, so that we don’t have to wait until we’re on our deathbed to know it.

The Enchanted April , by Elizabeth von Arnim

When The Enchanted April was first published, in 1922, it became a best seller in both England and the U.S. and inspired not only film and theatrical adaptations but also a rash of trips to Italy. (We might think of this as a precursor to the Eat, Pray, Love phenomenon.) The novel describes four women who feel compelled to spend the month of April together in Portofino. The plot is set in motion when the self-effacing, awkward Lotty Wilkins sees an ad in a newspaper on a rainy winter day in London, addressed to “Those who Appreciate Wistaria and Sunshine,” and has a eureka moment: She should rent the advertised house. She manages to convince three more women—an acquaintance from her ladies’ club and two strangers she scrounges up—to join her. Later, thanks to a month spent among sea and sun and flowering vines and cypress trees, the women all have various epiphanies of their own, returning to forgotten selves and admitting their true desires, in life and in love. The novel is a reminder that sometimes you have to go far away from home to come home to yourself. (It’s also a reminder to visit Italy in the springtime.)

Run Towards the Danger , by Sarah Polley

Each of the six essays in the Canadian filmmaker and actor Polley’s 2022 collection is a sharp examination of the way we process pain and trauma. You might marvel that one person has endured so much: severe scoliosis, sexual assault, near-fatal childbirth. One essay, “Mad Genius,” describes how, as a child actor on the set of a Terry Gilliam film, she was subjected to special effects that terrified her (“I sobbed in my father’s arms between takes and begged him to intervene”) and was hospitalized after an explosive detonated next to her and caused her to briefly lose her hearing. Each essay contains well-earned realizations—concerning the mind and the body, time and healing—but the title essay, about a debilitating concussion, relays the most resonant insight. A doctor tells Polley that the only way to return to normal brain function is, counterintuitively, to do the things that scare her most, to “run towards the danger”; this becomes the organizing principle of her life, even after her recovery. In a voice that is both warm and unflinchingly honest, she invites her reader to consider doing the same—to turn fear into a conduit for fulfillment.

Summer is in full swing.

Aside from one big storm, the sunny beach days have been splendid. But you can’t be on the beach 24 hours a day. Seriously. You can’t. It’s illegal.

Plus, your dermatologist will yell at you whether you wear sunscreen or not.

But even though there are no epic beach concerts this summer, not to worry, there are plenty of things going on musically around here to entertain you and your loved ones inside.

If you are a Boomer or from Generation X and love music, there’s hardly a better place to live than Atlantic City. I’ve seen practically every one of my favorite bands that I haven’t seen in concert since high school.

If they are still alive, they come to A.C.

This weekend, yacht rocker Christopher Cross is coming to The Concert Venue at Harrah’s.

He’s the "Ride Like the Wind" guy if your birth year begins with a two.

He has enjoyed a prolific 40-plus career. And you can see him at an intimate venue for as low as $54!

So Sail on over to Harrah’s on Friday.

If rhythm and blues is more your jam, the one and only Brian McKnight is at Ovation Hall on Saturday.

He’s been in the music game all the way back to the original "Beverly Hills 90210," where his hit song "Love Is" hopped on the official soundtrack.

Make it a point to take your mate to some high quality baby making music this weekend. And just like last weekend, the cover charge will not break the bank.

Tickets start at $29. But act fast. They are going fast!

Speaking of the blues, Philadelphia local legend and expert axe shredder Greg Sover is taking of Anchor Rock Club on Friday.

According to Guitar World Magazine, "the Philadelphian guitarist and singer steps up to fill some of the biggest shoes in guitar history--with David Bowie's amp along for the ride." Now that sounds like a fun endorsement.

You can check out his website and find $13 tickets to the show.

For those who want to rock, Blue Öyster Cult is over on the marina side of town at the Golden Nugget Saturday.

They are originally from Long Island, but over the decades they have earned world-wide success to the tune of 25 million records!

You can see them this weekend for $59.

Free music on the Boardwalk

If the gaming tables are not treating you well this season, the first week of free concerts in Chelsea starts with DJ Butta, Nomad and B-Side respectively.

You can catch this series on Sunday through Tuesday all the way until the end of September at the Tropicana Pavilion right on the Boardwalk. Bring chairs!

DJ Butta is an Atlantic City resident with an eclectic style fusing hip-hop, soul, R&B, old school, rock, reggae, funk, soulful house, and classics.

Nomad is a Grammy-nominated DJ from Columbia. (Good luck in the Copa finals on Sunday.) He lives in Atlantic City, but he has traveled the world and brings back his global performing experience for you to see on boards in front of the ocean.

B-SIDE, a DJ and drummer duo will dazzle you with live drums amidst the diverse music spinning and promise a soundscape of listening enjoyment.

The Tropicana offers some take-out options across from the shows.

You can grab a slice, a burrito or a sandwich at reasonable prices.

And if you are a Caesars Entertainment player, note that comps are one-to-one resort wide!

With such diverse musical offerings and cheap ticket prices available this weekend, give your Spotify a rest and get down here!

Welcome to Atlanta Yacht Club

Established 1950

Situated on Lake Allatoona,  Atlanta Yacht Club  has been home to small-boat pleasure and racing sailors for over 70 years.   All through the year  our shores are dappled with one-design sailing craft heading out for an afternoon on the water with friends and family.

Whether they come for friendly competition, sailing classes, or just an opportunity to relax with a day on the lake, what binds our members and families to AYC is their commitment to the sport of sailing and their choice to spend their leisure time in an activity where everyone in the family can “play”.

The Atlanta Yacht Club is home to several active one-design racing fleets: Snipe, Thistle, Y-Flyer, Flying Scot, Laser, and Sunfish. The Junior Yacht Club trains in 420s and Optimist prams.  The club also hosts fleet-sponsored national regattas throughout the year.  We are known for our competitive racing and our hospitality!

Captain Tom is an exceptional captain who went above and beyond to deliver our 46' Viking yacht from Brielle, New Jersey to Washington, DC. After purchasing the yacht in upstate New York, we managed to drive it to Brielle but couldn't continue the journey ourselves. We reached out to Captain Tom late on a Friday, and despite the short notice, he coordinated with his mate Mike and met us at the boat early Sunday morning. By Monday evening at 4 PM, Captain Tom was pulling up in DC. His communication throughout the journey was outstanding; he kept us informed of everything happening along the way. Additionally, he meticulously kept all receipts and provided valuable suggestions on driving the boat and how it handled. Captain Tom and his mate Mike truly came through in a clutch situation. We are incredibly thankful for their professionalism and care. They took excellent care of our boat, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Highly recommended
