A PLACE IN THE SUN is a custom 100’ Broward motor yacht built in 1992. She has been continuously updated and most recently completed a comprehensive refit and reconfiguration in 2021, SHE IS A ONE OF A KIND BROWARD. Major changes completed during the refit include an added aft deck stairway, installed new radar arch, mast and hardtop, reconfigured the flybridge with new bar, cabinets, grills, seating areas, and not one, but TWO Jacuzzis, and new audio video throughout the yacht. This yacht is effectively new due to the extensive refit performed where most every surface of the yacht was touched and improved.

Inside, the country kitchen galley was converted to a European galley and a new main deck master stateroom, with ensuite head, was created, thus giving this unique Broward 5 staterooms with 13 guest berths. The salon was reconfigured with all surfaces throughout the boat replaced or refurbished, including all new soft goods.

Motor yacht A PLACE IN THE SUN accommodates up to 13 guests in 5 well-appointed staterooms including two master staterooms, 1 VIP stateroom, 1 twin stateroom with Pullman and 1 bunked stateroom with four single berths; she has 13 guest berths in total for maximum flexibility. She is capable of carrying 5 crew onboard in newly reconfigured captain and crew quarters.

A PLACE IN THE SUN features a functional, but spacious layout, allowing for open and private areas throughout the yacht, from the expansive salon and flybridge, multiple dining areas, sun pads and two jacuzzi hot tubs for fun in the sun. The yacht is configured to support private cruising or can accommodate a significant charter business.

REFIT HIGHLIGHTS

A PLACE IN THE SUN began her refit in the spring of 2019, after two significant years of work, the vessel is better than new, with substantial upgrades being added.

The main salon has been reconfigured with a new bar, dining banquet, living area, and new floor to ceiling cabinet storage added around the stairway. All wood and wood veneer throughout the entire boat was replaced or refinished to new condition. All new wallpaper, carpet, stone countertops, ceiling headliners, lighting, soft goods and bedding, window shades and drapes, and furnishings were added. New custom handmade foam mattresses were provided for all berths. New Headhunter toilets were installed in the bathrooms throughout the boat.

The yacht has an amazing audio/video system, including KVH Direct satellite television, Savant audio sound throughout, Apple TV, Modulus movie storage and streaming, a TV in every stateroom, and two large TVs in the salon (78” and 55”). A new Kymeta U8 satellite system drives the internet for the yacht along with cell-based Wi-Fi.

Significant work has been completed in the engine room, with main engines and generators being updated and serviced, many parts being new or refurbished, new batteries, new fuel transfer pumps, new engine room gauges, hydraulics serviced, new water pumps, new watermakers, an additional chiller added, HVAC system completely overhauled, new AC blowers added throughout the boat, new hot water heaters, new electrical transformers, new Cablemaster shore power rig and cables, new lighting, new ceiling treatments, new gangway, and significant painting and polishing.

The pilothouse/flybridge navigation centers have been completely upgraded with new Garmin screens and radar, gauges, radios and antennas, new electric engine controls, including a DOCKMASTER remote control system, and other improvements.

The exterior changes include the addition of a new sun pad and railing on the bow of the boat, along with a new bow bench seat and dining area. All ship’s windows have been removed, resealed and V-Kool applied throughout. New bollards have been added on the aft end for towing and securing the yacht.

A PLACE IN THE SUN accommodates up to five crew members. Located on the lower deck forward of the engine room, the captain and crew quarters consist of a forward bow cabin with three single berths, one on port and an upper and lower on starboard, with a hinged door for entry. Substantial storage throughout the cabin, with access through a hatch to the bow and the anchor locker. Aft of the crew cabin is the crew head with shower, sink, countertop and head, along with a porthole window.  

The captain’s quarters is a cabin with a full-sized lower bed and single size upper, with storage and a cedar lined closet near the sliding entry door. Across from the captain’s cabin on the starboard side is the crew mess and galley where a banquette with bench seating and table serves as the mealtime and rest and relaxation area for the crew. A microwave and sink are in the galley, as well as a 32” TV. Access to the engine room is aft of the crew quarters.

He also has extensive knowledge in boat building, and has managed several new construction and refit projects. Captain Jim currently holds a 200 Ton Master USCG license.

CHEF CRISTIANO ROSSI From the coastal city of San Benedetto Del Tronto, in the Marche region of Italy, Cristiano is an experienced 3rd generation chef. Aside from learning first hand at home from his mother and grandmother, Cristiano grew up working in the kitchens of their family owned fine dining restaurants, with his father and grandfather as master chefs. These authentic culinary skills, of course, were passed down to him at a very young age. With his close proximity to the Adriatic Sea, Cristiano’s adventurous spirit lead him to pursue a career as a yacht chef. Venturing out on his own, Cristiano has worked on yachts of all shapes and sizes, all over the world. While specializing in authentic and fusion Italian, French, and Mediterranean Cuisines, Cristiano’s abilities in the galley are limitless. Even in high stress situations, Cristiano’s calm and kind nature personality prevails.

KEVIN HARVEY – Mate/Engineer/Stew From Cumberland, Maryland, Kevin brings a well rounded level of experience to LADY LEX. He has an extensive background in the service industry ranging from bartending to restaurant ownership to working in the construction industry. While living in the Virgin Islands for a few years, he developed a love for the sea and sailing. Kevin is gaining sea time, working on expanding his captain license.

The master stateroom accessed via the main salon features a king size bed, jacuzzi tub, extensive storage with a walk-in closet, and full entertainment center. The two guest staterooms each have double beds plus a fold down Pullman berth, ample drawer and closet space, en suite bathroom with shower, Satellite TV. All guest cabins are located towards the center of the yacht, being the most stable area when underway.

Crew quarters have ample storage and accommodations for four, in two cabins.

The Juan Espinosa designed large country kitchen, features modern appliances, 5-burner Corian cooking center, Stainless steel fridge/freezer, and full size oven. This functional galley makes the perfect lounge for family and friends, with a great social atmosphere.

The main salon benefits from the full beam of the yacht, and large aspect windows provide light filled panoramic views. This area also features a full wet bar with icemaker and drinks fridge, Satellite TV/DVD. Forward of the salon is an oversized dining table, and a convenient on-deck day head is situated in the foyer.

The aft deck area features covered open-air dining for 10 - 12 guests, a Jenn Aire double grill, wetbar, and spiral stairs leading up to the flybridge. This redesigned area also features “Euro Transom” style stairs leading down to the swim deck and lazarette/dive locker.

The oversized Flybridge has ample space and seating which has previously held events for up to 40 guests, a Jacuzzi tub for 8 with underwater lights, a full wet bar, refrigerator/icemaker, and BBQ grill, all creating a huge unparalleled entertaining deck for this size of yacht.

The 1992 raised pilothouse A PLACE IN THE SUN is a one-of-a-kind Broward that underwent a major refit in 2021, which brought updates like an aft deck stairway and a reconfigured flybridge with not one but two Jacuzzis. This yacht can be considered new due to the extensive $4,000,000 plus refit, which left no stone unturned. Each and every surface of the yacht was improved upon, leaving her in pristine condition. Designed and built with expert craftsmanship, A PLACE IN THE SUN offers functional areas centered around entertainment and beautifully appointed accommodations that contribute to her excellent charter potential. 

As guests head inside the aft entry door to the yacht’s main salon, they will be greeted with a modern interior and lots of light from the generous windows and recessed lighting above. The reconfigured main salon features a new bar, banquet-style dining table, dedicated living area with velour couches and new floor-to-ceiling cabinet storage around the stairway. The yacht’s country kitchen galley was converted to a European galley with new equipment. A new main deck master stateroom was created, allowing A PLACE IN THE SUN to accommodate 13 guests in five staterooms. 

The yacht’s clever accommodation layout has made use of every available space. It includes two master staterooms, one VIP stateroom, one twin stateroom with a Pullman and one bunked stateroom with four single berths. The main-deck master suite features an elevated queen berth and lots of drawer storage. The second master suite on the lower deck is fitted with a king berth, a dedicated vanity and beautiful Fabrica navy blue carpet. Each of the yacht’s additional cabins features the same elegant styling as both masters and en-suite bathrooms and entertainment systems. A PLACE IN THE SUN offers accommodations for up to five crewmembers on the lower deck. 

A PLACE IN THE SUN’s functional and spacious exterior layout was designed and built for alfresco entertainment. Her aft deck is the ideal spot for outdoor dining with a large table surrounded by a bench and dining chair seating. For those seeking more fun in the sun, the yacht’s flybridge is the perfect locale for sinking into the Jacuzzi, unwinding on the sunpads or enjoying a cocktail under the shade while admiring the stunning scenery. A PLACE IN THE SUN is a custom 100’ Broward motor yacht built in 1992. She has been continuously updated and most recently completed a comprehensive refit and reconfiguration in 2021, SHE IS A ONE OF A KIND BROWARD. Major changes completed during the refit include an added aft deck stairway, installed new radar arch, mast and hardtop, reconfigured the flybridge with new bar, cabinets, grills, seating areas, and not one, but TWO Jacuzzis, and new audio video throughout the yacht. This yacht is effectively new due to the extensive refit performed where most every surface of the yacht was touched and improved.

Inside, the country kitchen galley was converted to a European galley and a new main deck master stateroom, with ensuite head, was created, thus giving this unique Broward 5 staterooms with 13 guest berths. The salon was reconfigured with all surfaces throughout the boat replaced or refurbished, including all new soft goods.

Motor yacht A PLACE IN THE SUN accommodates up to 13 guests in 5 well-appointed staterooms including two master staterooms, 1 VIP stateroom, 1 twin stateroom with Pullman and 1 bunked stateroom with four single berths; she has 13 guest berths in total for maximum flexibility. She is capable of carrying 5 crew onboard in newly reconfigured captain and crew quarters.

A PLACE IN THE SUN features a functional, but spacious layout, allowing for open and private areas throughout the yacht, from the expansive salon and flybridge, multiple dining areas, sun pads and two jacuzzi hot tubs for fun in the sun. The yacht is configured to support private cruising or can accommodate a significant charter business.

Refit Highlights

A PLACE IN THE SUN began her refit in the spring of 2019, after two significant years of work, the vessel is better than new, with substantial upgrades being added.

The main salon has been reconfigured with a new bar, dining banquet, living area, and new floor to ceiling cabinet storage added around the stairway. All wood and wood veneer throughout the entire boat was replaced or refinished to new condition. All new wallpaper, carpet, stone countertops, ceiling headliners, lighting, soft goods and bedding, window shades and drapes, and furnishings were added. New custom handmade foam mattresses were provided for all berths. New Headhunter toilets were installed in the bathrooms throughout the boat.

The yacht has an amazing audio/video system, including KVH Direct satellite television, Savant audio sound throughout, Apple TV, Modulus movie storage and streaming, a TV in every stateroom, and two large TVs in the salon (78” and 55”). A new Kymeta U8 satellite system drives the internet for the yacht along with cell-based Wi-Fi.

Significant work has been completed in the engine room, with main engines and generators being updated and serviced, many parts being new or refurbished, new batteries, new fuel transfer pumps, new engine room gauges, hydraulics serviced, new water pumps, new watermakers, an additional chiller added, HVAC system completely overhauled, new AC blowers added throughout the boat, new hot water heaters, new electrical transformers, new Cablemaster shore power rig and cables, new lighting, new ceiling treatments, new gangway, and significant painting and polishing.

The pilothouse/flybridge navigation centers have been completely upgraded with new Garmin screens and radar, gauges, radios and antennas, new electric engine controls, including a DOCKMASTER remote control system, and other improvements.

The exterior changes include the addition of a new sun pad and railing on the bow of the boat, along with a new bow bench seat and dining area. All ship’s windows have been removed, resealed and V-Kool applied throughout. New bollards have been added on the aft end for towing and securing the yacht.

Aft of the crew cabin is the crew head with shower, sink, countertop and head, along with a porthole window.  

The captain’s quarters is a cabin with a full-sized lower bed and single size upper, with storage and a cedar lined closet near the sliding entry door. Across from the captain’s cabin on the starboard side is the crew mess and galley where a banquette with bench seating and table serves as the mealtime and rest and relaxation area for the crew. A microwave and sink are in the galley, as well as a 32” TV. Access to the engine room is aft of the crew quarters.

Winterfest Foundation celebrates young talent at Fantasy Boat Student Art Awards

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - The Museum of Discovery and Science was filled with excitement as the Winterfest Foundation hosted its Fantasy Boat Student Art Awards Reception on Sunday.

The contest encouraged young artists from kindergarten through fifth grade to express their creativity and envision their ideal boat for the annual Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade.

Approximately 658 students from 26 Broward County public, private, and charter schools participated in this year’s competition.

An awards ceremony took place after the reception and was hosted by children’s book author Neil Goldberg, who wrote “POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance.” Over $6,000 in cash and awards was presented, with 31 students being acknowledged for their skills.

Among the recognized, Towana Davis stood out, securing the first place win with her artwork.

“I just feel excited and I’m so glad to share my artwork and that other people get to see my artwork. I’m so proud of myself because I got first place,” said Davis.

The winning pieces of art will be framed and displayed, with copies provided to the respective schools of the winners, thanks to the support of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

High-End Tenders: The Tender Touch

I’ll admit I’ve been a little bit obsessed with tenders as of late. Ever since the Swedish builder JCraft invited me out to Shelter Island last summer to join a sea trial of its lovely little 42 Torpedo, my interest in this market segment has spiked.

I’m not an overtly flashy person but I do appreciate high-quality things, so there is something so tantalizingly right to me about having mega-yacht finishes, engineering, and customizations on a small boat. And the flip side of that is that as my marine journalism career has progressed, there has been a natural inclination to cover bigger and bigger yachts. So, more often than not, I find myself writing about mega-yacht interiors, while my heart lies with the fast, open boats of my youth. Here are a few that have caught my eye in recent months.

If you’ve cracked open a marine publication, gone on yachting social media, or even just had a waterside drink in South Florida or the Hamptons in the past year, you’ve almost certainly seen the 42 Torpedo. This boat seems to be all places at all times thanks to an aggressive marketing campaign driven by the builder’s ambitious CEO Radenko Milakovic.

The Torpedo is less a boat than a little jewel box of a thing. She can rightfully be thought of as a resto-mod, with immediately recognizable classic styling from the Dolce Vita era, but matched with a hull and engineering built with Viking know-how on the island of Gotland, just of Sweden’s mainland in the Baltic Sea.

I helmed this boat last summer and was very pleased with what I found. The distinct tumblehome af is mainly for show, but the fare up front is for go and she sliced ably through a two-foot chop in the Peconic Bay on test day. She has a variety of engine packages, can hit a sizzling 47-knot top hop, and carves through tight turns with a delicious amount of heel enough that you can reach out and touch the spray with your hand when sitting in the cockpit. This combination of style and performance is rare and points to why you’ll find JCraft nestled in the holds of some of the world’s most famous mega yachts.

If the JCraft can be thought of as a fully refurbished Jaguar E-Type, the Wajer 44 has always reminded me of the Audi RS 7 a car that exudes power and grace but in a tamped-down way that speaks to the “stealth wealth” trend that has become so en vogue in certain circles.

Wajer has become a dominant player in the tender and dayboat game thanks to its Dutch engineering and partnerships with design titans like Amsterdam’s Sinot. The builder currently offers a 38, 44, 55, and 77, though company execs will tell you that the 44 is the best-looking of the bunch. And I concur completely. The proportions on this sleek little boat are just right not too pointy, not too stubby and she really is rather beautiful. At the helm, the 44 is remarkably quiet underway thanks to a focus on sound dampening during construction. I shot a video while helming this boat off Cannes last fall for my Instagram (@theyachtfella, if you’re not already following) and I didn’t even need to talk loudly while at the wheel. Cocooned in a pocket of air, I was able to speak with my normal voice at a 38-knot clip. The 44 is also in a sweet spot size-wise. I do believe that the choppy twos and threes in Cannes would have bounced the 38 around a bit, while a later sea trial of the 55 in similar conditions was almost a little boring. The 44, however, exhibited a good mix of action and control.

VANQUISH VQ55

Another popular Dutch builder known for high levels of customization, sporty performance, and its relatively eco-friendly aluminum construction is Vanquish. The builder debuted a VQ55 at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show that created quite a stir thanks to its very American power package quintuple 600-horsepower Mercury outboards. I saw it in person it was really jaw-dropping. That boat is said to be able to hit a blistering 61 knots on the pins. That’s borderline go-fast territory for a vessel that is more than capable of hosting a large party thanks to massive sun pads at the transom and an open-bow layout.

Vanquishes have become a staple on the Hamptons scene, where dayboaters want fast boats that can carry a lot of people to trendy waterside eateries (while avoiding that famous stop-dead East End traffic). To my eye, Vanquishes aren’t quite as stylish as the JCraf or the Wajer, but they’re also arguably more practical because of the maximized onboard space.

One of the most visually arresting boats I’ve seen in recent memory is the German-built SAY 42, an all-carbon-fber vessel that looks like it fell out of a science-fiction movie. The boat draws heavily from CEO Karl Wagner’s motorcycle-racing past, and its construction puts heavy emphasis on being light and fast. When I did a sea trial for this boat off of Fort Lauderdale, I saw 43 knots with the hammer down, though the builder says she can do closer to 50 in the right conditions thanks to twin 430-horsepower Volvo Pentas.

Onboard styling for the SAY is in line with its sleek and modern profile. Everything is angular and brutalistic. It’s a very cool aesthetic, and one that I think will play well with a bachelor in the Miami scene looking to make a splash zipping across Biscayne Bay for brunch at Seaspice or Kiki on the River.

Riva practically invented the Dolce Vita aesthetic that has become so iconic in the world of upper-echelon leisure. The Iseo is the natural standard bearer for the wooden runabouts of the past with its low-slung and incredibly sleek lines that practically beg to be taken for a quick jaunt on Lake Como or other similarly chic cruising grounds. Of course, this boat is built with more durable and easy-to-maintain fiberglass, so it offers the same dose of romanticism as the woodies without the wallop of upkeep. The spritely 27-footer comes with multiple Volvo Penta propulsion options and tops out at 40 knots while cruising happily at around 25 knots. Unsurprisingly for a Riva, the Iseo is said to have a remarkably sporty and responsive feel at the helm, while an af sun pad and comfortable seating in the cockpit make for excellent places to enjoy a cold drink underway or rafted up at your favorite sandbar.

Hackercraft is one of the world’s most legendary wooden-boat builders. For over a century, the New York State company has staked its claim on turning out extraordinarily beautiful runabouts that harken to a bygone era of specific American class and taste. But this nostalgia-driven brand with its ancient building materials is not allergic to futuristic tech. In fact, with the Special Sport, it has embraced it. This model is fully electric and has a respectable top end of 30 knots. A range of about 30 nautical miles is enough for short trips from the yacht to port, or from the dock to your favorite waterside restaurant. And she runs in near silence, thanks to propulsion units built by Ingenity Electrics. That leaves just you and the sound of the wind and the waves as you slice through the chop, leaving the marine environment as pristine as you found it.

One person shot at a Dunkin’ Donuts in Broward. The shooter was an employee, BSO says

The drive-thru area of a Dunkin’ Donuts turned into a crime scene Monday morning when someone was shot outside of a shopping plaza in Broward.

The shooter, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives: a Dunkin’ employee.

BSO said Monday afternoon one person has been detained for questioning after the shooting unfolded around 8:30 a.m. in Lauderdale Lakes.

While BSO Fire Rescue took the gunshot victim to the hospital, BSO personnel, including a SWAT team, swarmed the area around the Dunkin’ Donuts-Baskin Robbins shared building at 3960 W. Oakland Park Blvd. This affected traffic on W. Oakland Park Blvd. and, to a lesser extent, nearby N. State Rd. 7.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred at our franchised location in Lauderdale Lakes,” a Dunkin’ spokesperson said. “The franchisee is cooperating fully with the police in their investigation. Given that this is an active investigation, we defer any further comment to the local police department.”

Man drowns in Fort Lauderdale canal while retrieving radio-controlled boat from mangroves

A 44-year-old man died Wednesday after drowning in a canal in Fort Lauderdale, officials said.

David Boatswain was pulled from the water in the area of the 1800 block of Northwest Third Court about 5 p.m. and taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, Fort Lauderdale Police said in an email Thursday.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Gregory May said the man was wading across the water to retrieve a radio-controlled boat that got stuck in the mangroves when he went under. Someone with him called 911 when he did not resurface.

“This appears to be an accidental drowning and no foul play is suspected at this time,” the police department said.
