Rent a boat in San Francisco

To truly see San Francisco at its best, consider hopping off the cable cars and hopping on a boat to explore the San Francisco Bay. This city is tucked in the heart of northern California along the Pacific coastline and has a very rich maritime history.  Today, ‘San Fran’ is a top destination for travelers, and the best way to see some of its top attractions is by boat—can’t miss highlights include the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Pier 39 at Fisherman’s Wharf, and so much more.

What to Know

When planning to hit the water in San Francisco, consider these popular boat rental styles:

Sailboats rule the waterways in and around San Francisco. You’ll see everything from small sailing dinghies and daysailers, to large catamarans and schooners used for leisure and for adventure all throughout the bay area. Our fleet of sailboats is great for couples, large groups, and families.

Motor yachts, trawlers, and walkaround boats offer protection from the cool air and wind during any season, and are great for navigating the San Francisco bay.

Safety Requirements:

Boating License/Education Rules : You must be 16 years of age or older and in possession of his/her California Boater Card to legally operate a vessel powered by a motor of 15 hp or more, including personal watercraft (PWCs).

Persons 12 to 15 years of age may operate a vessel powered by a motor of 15 hp or more, including PWCs, if they are supervised on board by a person at least 18 years of age and in possession of his/her California Boater Card.

There is no age restriction for operating a sailboat under 30 ft. long (with wind as the main source of propulsion) or a dinghy used between a moored vessel and shore or between two moored vessels.

Life Jacket Requirements : Ages 13 and under must wear a PFD at all times on a moving vessel of any length. Children are not required to wear a life jacket when they are wearing a harness on a sailboat, when they are in an enclosed cabin, and when they are on a vessel during an emergency rescue.

For more information,  visit the California Department of Parks and Recreation .

Things to Do in San Francisco by Boat

Cruise Under the Golden Gate Bridge

Cruise Under the Golden Gate Bridge

The image of this iconic bridge is imprinted in most of America’s hearts and minds—including boaters. Whether you’re nostalgic for the ‘Full House’ intro and theme song, or you’ve dreamed of traveling to the west coast one day to see it in person, the Golden Gate Bridge is a destination you won’t want to miss while in San Francisco. Sure, seeing it by land is enchanting, but getting up close and personal to the bridge by water is spectacular and unforgettable. Stop at the discreet Kirkby Cove Beach for picturesque framing of the bridge, pack a couple of sandwiches, and make it a beach day.

Pro Tip : Just beyond the Golden Gate Bridge is a prime spot for wild salmon fishing. Take a  guided fishing charter  to get to know the area and for pro fishing tips!

Location :  Google Maps Link

Closest marinas or docks to Golden Gate Bridge : Presidio Yacht Club, Travis Marina, Captain Zorah

Lat/Long : 37.8199° N, 122.4783° W

Sightsee at Point Bonita Lighthouse

Sightsee at Point Bonita Lighthouse

Point Bonita Lighthouse is a historic West Coast jewel. Built in 1855 to guide ships through the Golden Gate straits, today this lighthouse is a popular destination for maritime aficionados and tourists to catch epic views of the sunset at the entrance of San Francisco Bay. Book a boat with a local, licensed captain to learn more about this iconic landmark and tour the coastlines of Bonita Cove and Sausalito, which is located less than a 30-minute boat ride north of downtown.

Pro Tip : Northwest of Point Bonita Lighthouse is Seal Rock, a sandstone rock formation that used to be the rest stop for California sea lions. Book a full-day boat rental so you’ll have ample time to explore the area before cruising back towards downtown.

Closest marinas to Downtown : Travis Marina, Boat Ramp (Sommerville Rd), Golden Gate Yacht Club

Lat/Long : 37.8156° N, 122.5295° W

Sailing in San Francisco Bay

Sailing in San Francisco Bay

Sailing is where you’ll find San Francisco’s past and present. While you’ll see sailboats everywhere on the Bay, each one is special and unique in its own way. There’s no place like San Francisco to go sailing, and there’s no better fleet of sailboats to access than Boatsetter’s. You can sail with a local, licensed captain to learn the basics or for more experienced sailors, book your own bareboat charter. In any case, make sure you go in the afternoon for best experience, as the wind patterns pick up around 12pm local time.

Pro Tip : If you're prone to seasickness, prepare in advance to limit your discomfort onboard, as sailing in the bay can sometimes be a little rocky (especially on smaller boats). Keep in mind that larger sailboats will offer more comfort and a smoother ride.

Closest marinas to Downtown : Travis Marina, Boat Ramp (Sommerville Rd), Golden Gate Yacht Club

Where to Go Boating in San Francisco

San Francisco Bay & San Pablo Bay

San Francisco Bay & San Pablo Bay

Boaters love this dynamic duo—between these two iconic northern bays you and your crew have 4,600 square miles of water surrounded by sand beaches, ancient rock formations, and precious nature preserves. We’ve already mentioned a few of the San Francisco Bay’s offerings by name above, but it’s important to note that the San Pablo Bay— located north—is an extension of this waterway that provides access to China Camp State Park, Point Pinole Regional Shoreline, Mare Island, and the Benicia State Recreation Area.

Moorage : Popular marinas on the southern side include: West Point Harbor or The South Bay Yacht Club. Marinas in the central part of the bay include Pier 40, Bay View Boat Club, and Safe Harbor Ballena Isle. While marinas in San Pablo Bay are Marina Bay Yacht Harbor, Point San Pablo Yacht Club, or Schoonmaker Point Marina.

Wake zone : Yes - also keep an eye out for navigational buoys directing marine traffic.

Pro Tips : If you plan on taking the helm, make sure to brush up on the  boating basics before.

Seasonality : To avoid ‘Karl the Fog’ and catch San Francisco’s gorgeous blue skies and kind temperatures, we recommend boating in late summer and early fall—especially if you’re looking for a less crowded bay.

Lat/Long : 38.0440° N, 122.4014° W

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island

Take your boat rental around this infamous island prison for a one of a kind cruise. For those interested in spooky ghost tales and stories of escape attempts, book with a local, licensed captain and get ready for accounts of fascinating history and true crime. Originally the home of pelicans, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary housed our nation’s most notorious criminals, such Al Capone, the “Last Great American Train Robber,” George “Machine Gun” Kelly and others.

Nearby Marinas & Launches : Pier 39 Marina, Hyde Street Harbor, Gashouse Cove Marina

Wake zone : Yes - be extra conscious of your surroundings on the waters near Alcatraz Island as the official island ferry frequently embarks and disembarks from the island’s docks.

Pro Tips : Book a boat rental for the day, after your adventurous cruise around Alcatraz Island dock at Pier 39, where you can recharge with great seafood and live music all while taking in the fresh seaside airs.

Lat/Long : 37.8270° N, 122.4230° W

Pier 39

Pier 39 is a charming seaside attraction, filled with countless restaurants and shops that lure in tourists and visitors from all around the world. Come here by boat to Pier 39 Marina, which offers 300 slips for long-term rentals, day-docking, and overnight moorage. One of our favorite things about Pier 39 is—you guessed it— the sea lions! For even more marine life viewing, check out the Aquarium of the Bay nearby, home of 20,000 majestic sea creatures. Bring a romantic date to Pier 39 by boat and take a cute picture in front of the “Open Heart” sculpture located at Level 1 at the picturesque Bay End of PIER 39. This is also a great place for families to bond over fun arcade games and amusement park rides.

Moorage : Pier 39 Marina, where West Yacht harbor can accommodate boats up to 60-feet, and East Yacht harbor can accommodate boats up to 85-feet.

Wake zone :  Yes - expect no wake zones as you enter and exit the marina

Pro Tips : Pier 39 is one of the most popular places to meet your Boatsetter sailboat rental, as well as your charter if you’ve planned to go whale watching for local gray and humpback whales.

Lat/Long : 37.8087° N, 122.4098° W

The dramatic footage of a huge cargo ship colliding with a bridge near Baltimore and causing it to collapse like a scene from a Hollywood disaster movie riveted people around the world Tuesday.

In the Bay Area, where dozens of large cargo ships, oil tankers, cruise ships and other vessels sail in and out of San Francisco Bay every week, the calamity raised the question: Could it happen here?

Ships have occasionally hit several of the eight major bridges that cross San Francisco Bay over the decades. But for a variety of reasons, the chances of a bridge collapsing are very low, experts said Tuesday.

“It would be ridiculous to say it could never happen here,” said Scott Humphrey, chairman of the San Francisco Bay Harbor Safety Committee, a state organization of industry, government, and nonprofit maritime organizations that meets monthly to improve shipping safety. “But it’s extremely unlikely that anything of that magnitude could happen here.”

All of the major bridges that cross San Francisco Bay, including the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge, have concrete buffers, called fenders, that surround the columns supporting the bridge near the water line.

If a large ship loses power or steering and hits one, it glances off, said Bart Ney, a spokesman for Caltrans, which owns most of the bridges spanning the bay.

A barge filled with equipment is tethered to a tower of the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge just west of Treasure Island in San Francisco, Calif., on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013. Repair to the tower began on Tuesday after the tanker ship Overseas Reymar hit the bridge on Jan. 7. (Jane Tyska/Staff)

“The bridges are designed for it,” he said. “The strategy is that if you get a vessel that is going to collide with the bridge, you want to keep it from touching the bridge. All of our bridges have a robust fender system that are designed to absorb energy. The bridge does more damage to the ship than the ship does to the bridge.”

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore did not have the same fender system, he said.

Further, the Bay Area is known for earthquakes. All of the major bridges across San Francisco Bay have undergone an extensive earthquake retrofits in the past 20 years, Ney said. They have been fitted with seismic dampening systems — joints that allow bridges to flex and move in earthquakes, along with huge hinges, and other features that not only help them survive earthquakes but avoid collapse in ship collisions, he said.

Khalid Mosalam, a professor of civil engineering at UC Berkeley, watched the video Tuesday of the Baltimore bridge collapse frame-by-frame.

“It’s a very classical mode of failure. It was breathtaking,” he said. “You study these things and learn about them and teach them to students, but you rarely see it happen, which is good thing.”

Many of California’s bridges are more resilient than bridges in other parts of the world, he added.

“Because of earthquake designs, the columns in West Coast bridges tend to be a lot stronger, a lot bigger,” he said. “If an accident like this happened here, I doubt it would lead to destruction like we saw in the video.”

But accidents do happen.

Last year, 2,874 large ships arrived and departed San Francisco Bay, sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge carrying everything from oil from Alaska to steel shipping containers full of electronics and clothes, according to the Marine Exchange of the San Francisco Bay Region, an organization that tracks ship movements. Expert harbor pilots board the ships and help them navigate when they are entering and leaving the Bay.

On Nov. 7, 2007, the 901-foot Cosco Busan, a cargo ship headed from Oakland to South Korea, sideswiped a Bay Bridge support column protected by a fender in dense morning fog.

A Bay Bridge tower that was damaged after it was hit by the cargo ship Cosco Busan. (Ray Chavez/Bay Area News Group)

The incident ripped a 211-foot-long gash in the ship and dumped 53,000 gallons of bunker fuel into the bay. No people were injured or killed, but the spill oiled 69 miles of shore. Roughly 6,800 birds were killed.

An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board found that the ship’s pilot, John Cota, of Petaluma, had a “degraded cognitive performance from his use of impairing prescription medications.” Cota, the investigation concluded, had a history of alcohol abuse and prescriptions for at least nine medications for pain, depression and sleep disorders.

Other causes of the Cosco Busan incident included a lack of communication between Cota and the ship’s Chinese captain; inadequate crew training; and a failure by the Coast Guard to warn Cota by radio that he was heading for the bridge.

The bridge fender suffered only minor damage. The Bay Bridge itself was not damaged.

The Cosco Busan’s owner, Regal Stone Ltd., and its operator, Fleet Management Ltd., both of Hong Kong, paid $44 million to settle the civil case with state prosecutors.

The Overseas Reymar, which struck the southwest tower of the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge, is seen at anchor near Treasure Island as a Coast Guard vessel passes by in San Francisco, Calif. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013. (Jane Tyska/Staff Archives)

The oil tanker was empty, having offloaded its cargo at a refinery in Martinez the night before. No oil was spilled.

The accident caused $1.4 million in damage to the fender but did not structurally damage the bridge, Caltrans reported. The ship sustained $220,000 in damage.

After the incident, the harbor safety committee passed guidelines recommending large ships not sail under the Bay Bridge in heavy fog.

There are still some areas of concern. State law requires oil tankers to have tug boat escorts so they can be pushed away from danger if they lose power or steering. But tug boat escorts are not required for cargo ships moving in and out of San Francisco Bay. In 2004, following a series of Mercury News stories exposing the risk, state lawmakers passed a bill to require tug escorts for chemical tanker ships in San Francisco Bay, but Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill after the shipping industry raised cost concerns.

Early reports indicate that the ship in Baltimore reported it had lost power before colliding with the bridge. In April 2022, the Wan Hai 176, a 564-foot container ship, lost engine power and drifted seven miles off the coast of Point Reyes with 21 people aboard. It was intercepted by tug boats and towed into San Francisco Bay without incident. The Singapore-flagged vessel had more than 700 containers on board and 39,000 gallons of fuel.

“We have seen accidents in the Bay Area involving large ships in the past,” said Ben Eichenberg, an attorney with Baykeeper, an environmental group. “If a ship loses power, taking out a bridge isn’t the only disaster that can happen. It can run aground. It can leak oil. This Maryland accident should get us to review all of our safety procedures. There is going to be some soul searching here.”

During California Visit, Secretary Haaland Announces New Investments to Create Public Parks, Expand Recreation Opportunities, and Restore Outdoor Ecosystems

Funding from President Biden’s Investing in America agenda will improve recreational opportunities for local communities along the San Francisco Bay

$58.3 million in new funding from the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Program will increase equitable outdoors access for underserved communities

Date: Wednesday, March 27, 2024 Contact:  [email protected]

SAN FRANCISCO — Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland visited the San Francisco Bay Area today, where she highlighted how historic funding from President Biden’s Investing in America agenda and the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) Program are helping to restore our nation’s lands and waters through locally led, landscape-scale restoration projects, while also improving equitable access to the outdoors.

Secretary Haaland visited the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, which is receiving $2 million from President Biden’s Investing in America agenda to improve recreational opportunities for local communities along the San Francisco Bay. Working with partners, including Tribes and local youth advocacy groups, the Refuge will identify the trails most at-risk from climate change and ensure they remain a community asset in the face of rising sea levels. This work will benefit local, traditionally underserved communities, as well as the greater Bay Area by securing connections along the 500-mile Bay Trail system - a critical transportation network for non-motorized transportation in the dense urban core. In addition, the Service received $4.69 million from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), building on the President’s commitment to secure additional lands for public access by expanding the Refuge.

In February 2024, the Department announced $157 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that will support 206 ecosystem restoration projects in 48 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Territories and will advance the Department’s ongoing work across several restoration and resilience programs.  Through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the Department is stewarding an overall $2 billion over five years in new investments to put people to work restoring our nation’s lands and waters. To guide these historic investments, in April 2023, the Department unveiled the Restoration and Resilience Framework to catalyze coordination and drive transformational outcomes across our existing programs and initiatives.

Secretary Haaland also announced $58.3 million in grant funding for communities in 11 states across the United States — including San Francisco — to create new parks and trails or fund substantial renovations to existing parks through the ORLP program.

The ORLP program, established in 2014 and funded through the LWCF, enables urban communities to create new outdoor recreation spaces, reinvigorate existing parks, and form connections between people and the outdoors in economically underserved communities. The city of San Francisco is receiving more than $8 million to revitalize park blocks that offer various outdoor recreation amenities to the public.

Earlier this year, the Department launched a tour to hear directly from local stakeholders on the need to connect communities with access to the outdoors and encourage state participation in the ORLP program. The program helps advance President Biden’s America the Beautiful initiative , a locally led, voluntary conservation and restoration effort that aims to address the nature and climate crises, improve equitable access to the outdoors, and strengthen the economy. Providing safe outdoor spaces for communities that are park-deprived is one of six areas of focus. The ORLP program also helps advance the Administration's Justice 40 initiative which aims to have 40 percent of the benefits of federal funding flow to disadvantaged communities.

Since its inception in 1965, the LWCF has funded $5.2 billion to support more than 45,000 projects in every county in the country. The LWCF supports increased public access to and protection for federal public lands and waters — including national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and recreation areas — and provides matching grants to state governments for the acquisition and development of public parks and other outdoor recreation sites.

Six presumed dead after cargo ship crash levels Baltimore bridge

BALTIMORE — A major Baltimore bridge collapsed like a house of cards early Tuesday after it was struck by a container ship, sending six people to their deaths in the dark waters below, and closing one of the country’s busiest ports.

By nightfall, the desperate search for six people who were working on the bridge and vanished when it fell apart had become a grim search for bodies.

“We do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath said.

Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said earlier that one of his workers had survived. He did not release their names.

Up until then, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore had held out hope that the missing people might be found even as law enforcement warned that the frigid water and the fact that there had been no sign of them since 1:30 a.m. when the ship struck Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Moore expressed heartbreak after officials suspended the search for survivors.

"Our heart goes out to the families," he said. "I can’t imagine how painful today has been for these families, how painful these hours have been have been for these families."

It was a crushing blow to the loved ones of the missing men, who had waited for hours at a Royal Farms convenience store near the entrance of the bridge for word of their fate.

Follow live updates on the Baltimore bridge collapse

The tragic chain of events began early Tuesday when the cargo ship Dali notified authorities that it had lost power and issued a mayday moments before the 984-foot vessel slammed into a bridge support at a speed of 8 knots, which is about 9 mph.

Moore declared a state of emergency while rescue crews using sonar detected at least five vehicles in the frigid 50-foot-deep water: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle of some kind. Authorities do not believe anyone was inside the vehicles.

Investigators quickly concluded that it was an accident and not an act of terrorism.

Ship was involved in another collision

Earlier, two people were rescued from the water, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said. One was in good condition and refused treatment, he said. The other was seriously injured and was being treated in a trauma center.

Moore said other drivers might have been in the water had it not been for those who, upon hearing the mayday, blocked off the bridge and kept other vehicles from crossing.

“These people are heroes,” Moore said. “They saved lives.”

Nearly eight years ago, the Dali was involved in an accident. In July 2016, it struck a quay at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, damaging the quay.

The nautical commission investigated the accident, but the details of the inquiry were not immediately clear Tuesday.

The Dali is operated and managed by Synergy Group. In a statement, the company said that two port pilots were at the helm during Tuesday's crash and that all 22 crew members onboard were accounted for.

The Dali was chartered by the Danish shipping giant Maersk, which said it would have no choice but to send its ships to other nearby ports with the Port of Baltimore closed.

The bridge, which is about a mile and a half long and carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River southeast of Baltimore, was "fully up to code," Moore said.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said that her agency will lead the investigation and that a data recorder on the ship could provide more information.

"But right now we're focusing on the people, on the families," she said. "The rest can wait."

President Joe Biden vowed to rebuild the bridge and send federal funds.

"This is going to take some time," the president warned. "The people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

Speaking in Baltimore, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoed the president's promise.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure."

But Buttigieg warned that replacing the bridge and reopening the port will take time and money and that it could affect supply chains.

The Port of Baltimore, the 11th largest in the U.S., is the busiest port for car imports and exports, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023 alone, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

Writer David Simon, a champion of Baltimore who set his TV crime drama "The Wire" on the streets of the city he once covered as a reporter, warned online that the people who will suffer the most are those whose livelihoods depend on the port.

"Thinking first of the people on the bridge," Simon posted on X . "But the mind wanders to a port city strangling. All the people who rely on ships in and out."

Timeline of crash

Dramatic video captured the moment at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday when the Dali struck a support and sent the bridge tumbling into the water. A livestream showed cars and trucks on the bridge just before the strike. The ship did not sink, and its lights remained on.

Investigators said in a timeline that the Dali's lights suddenly shut off four minutes earlier before they came back on and that then, at 1:25 a.m. dark black smoke began billowing from the ship's chimney.

A minute later, at 1:26 a.m., the ship appeared to turn. And in the minutes before it slammed into the support, the lights flickered again.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the workers on the bridge were repairing concrete ducts when the ship crashed into the structure.

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, said James Krutzfeldt, a foreman.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said it had received a report that a “motor vessel made impact with the bridge” and confirmed it was the Dali, a containership sailing under a Singaporean flag that was heading for Sri Lanka.

Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses After Being Struck By Cargo Ship

Bobby Haines, who lives in Dundalk in Baltimore County, said he felt the impact of the bridge collapse from his house nearby.

"I woke up at 1:30 this morning and my house shook, and I was freaking out," he said. "I thought it was an earthquake, and to find out it was a bridge is really, really scary."

Families of bridge workers wait for updates

Earlier in the day, relatives of the construction crew waited for updates on their loved ones.

Marian Del Carmen Castellon told Telemundo her husband, Miguel Luna, 49, was working on the bridge.

“They only tell us that we have to wait and that they can’t give us information,” she said.

Castellon said she was "devastated, devastated because our heart is broken, because we don’t know how they have been rescued yet. We are just waiting for the news."

Luna's co-worker Jesús Campos said he felt crushed, too.

“It hurts my heart to see what is happening. We are human beings, and they are my folks,” he said.

Campos told The Baltimore Banner that the missing men are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Active search and rescue ends

The Coast Guard said it was suspending the active search-and-rescue effort at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Coast Guard’s not going away, none of our partners are going away, but we’re just going to transition into a different phase," Gilreath said at a news conference.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland L. Butler, Jr., said it was moving to a recovery operation. Changing conditions have made it dangerous for divers, he said.

Butler pledged to "do our very best to recover those six missing people," but the conditions are difficult.

"If we look at how challenging it is at a simple motor vehicle crash to extract an individual, I'm sure we can all imagine how much harder it is to do it in inclement weather, when it's cold, under the water, with very limited to no visibility," he said.

"There's a tremendous amount of debris in the water," which can include sharp metal and other hazards, and that could take time, Butler said.

'A long road in front of us'

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, the structure was later named after the author of the American national anthem.

The bridge is more than 8,500 feet long, or 1.6 miles. Its main section spans 1,200 feet, and it was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world upon its completion, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance .

About 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, which equals 11.3 million vehicles per year, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The river and the Port of Baltimore are both key to the shipping industry on the East Coast, generating more than $3.3 billion a year and directly employing more than 15,000 people.

Asked what people in Baltimore can expect going forward, the state's transportation secretary said it is too early to tell.

"Obviously we reached out to a number of engineering companies, so obviously we have a long road in front of us," Wiedefeld said.
