Visiting Arrayanes forest and Victoria Island

There are many ways to visit the Arrayanes Forest:

• On your own in a trekking through the Quetrihué Peninsula , although partially, because you would not visit Victoria Island, only the Arrayanes Forest.
• By catamaran from Villa La Angostura (on your own), but also partially because you would not visit Victoria Island either.
• On an excursion from Bariloche by catamaran , in which the Bosque de Arrayanes and also Victoria Island are visited.

Walking on your own

Starting from Villa La Angostura, you have to walk (or take a local bus) to Puerto Angostura and the Quetrihué isthmus, which divides Playa Mansa from Playa Brava. There is the National Park post where you have to pay the entrance fee and get a map .

From there you can walk 12 km to the Arrayanes Forest . It is of medium difficulty. To return, you can choose between undoing the trail also walking or returning in catamaran . You can also do it the other way around, go by catamaran and come back walking.

On your own in a catamaran

If you find the walk exhausting just thinking about it, you can go and return by catamaran which is taken from the Bahia Brava pier . Find out the schedules at the Villa La Angostura tourist office.

Excursion from Bariloche to visit the Arrayanes Forest and Victoria Island

There are many agencies in Bariloche’s downtown that offer the excursion to visit the Arrayanes forest and Victoria Island . It is, together with Circuito Chico , one of the essential activities to do in Bariloche.

If you are going to travel to Bariloche in high season (summer) it is advisable to make a reservation online through some agency, since catamarans are usually full.

Depending on the agency, they usually have one or two daily departures and include the round trip transfer from downtown Bariloche to Puerto Pañuelo.

What is not included is the entrance to the Nahuel Huapi National Park , where the Arrayanes forest and Victoria Island are located, nor the boarding fee charged at Puerto Pañuelo.

Guides on board the catamaran tell you the history of the place , the origin of the lake and the arrayanes (myrtles) and other interesting facts.

It is advisable to bring warm clothes , not only in winter, since temperatures are cold and the weather is very changeable in this area.

Regarding food or drinks, you can take food on the catamaran , since it won’t be included in the excursion. Also, you can order food or drinks in the bar of the boat or directly eat in the small restaurant enabled in the Arrayanes forest.

If you make the excursion to visit the Arrayanes forest and Victoria Island from Bariloche , the catamarans depart from the Puerto Pañuelo pier , in the Circuito Chico and a few meters away from the Llao Llao hotel.

– How to get to Puerto Pañuelo?

By car , taking from Bariloche downtown Bustillo Avenue and then the r oute of Circuito Chico to the Llao Llao Hotel. It is about 25 km away. If you choose to get to Puerto Pañuelo by public transport , the bus number 20 leaves you at the hotel Llao Llao stop and from there it is less than 100 meters walking to Puerto Pañuelo.

Visiting Arrayanes forest

Upon arriving at the Arrayanes forest, on the Quetrihue peninsula, the park ranger welcomes the place, who is in charge of watching over the care of the place. In the visiting area there are public restrooms and a place where you can have a drink or eat something .

The tour usually lasts about 30 minutes and is done by specially designed wooden walkways , where the arrayanes trees are on either side of the path. The particularity of the arrayán is that it is a saffron-colored shrub with white flowers , very eye-catching.

Visiting Victoria Island

On the other hand, the visit to Victoria Island lasts 90 minutes. The catamaran takes you to Puerto Anchorena and then goes along an internal path of the island until you reach Playa del Toro , where you will find cave paintings made by the original inhabitants of the area. In addition, this beach is of volcanic origin, which gives it a spectacular environment.

Best time for visiting Arrayanes forest and Victoria Island

All year round . Catamaran excursions to Victoria Island and the Arrayanes Forest are made from Bariloche, even if it snows or rains. In winter there is usually only one trip a day.

Admission to Nahuel Huapi or Arrayanes National Park (2024)

If you are going to make the excursion from Bariloche, you will be paying the entrance to the Nahuel Huapi National Park . If you are making the excursion or visit from Villa La Angostura, you will be paying the entrance to Los Arrayanes National Park . Anyway, the price is the same and it is valid daily.

So you’re planning a visit los Arrayanes National Park? Awesome stuff. It’s a seriously beautiful part of Argentina and Neuquén province.

In this guide we’re going to give you all the information you need to plan your trip, including the various routes to get there, how much it costs and what you should take with you.

Los Arrayanes National Park

First a little history about los Arrayanes. Until 1971, it used to just be part of the larger Nahuel Huapi National Park . But it was made an independent National Park for the purpose of the preservation of unique Arrayanes forest.

Located in an extreme of Lake Nahuel Huapi, right on the tip of the peninsula that is Parque Nacional Los Arrayanes, it is one of a kind in the world. Although it was actually artificially created by previous landowners who removed all other vegetation to promote its growth.

The cinnamon stick like trees are rumored to be where Walt Disney drew inspiration for the film, Bambi . Unfortunately it is just that, a rumor. But while it has been confirmed that Walt didn’t actually visit the Arrayanes wood, it still takes on a magical and mystical feel.

How To Get to Arrayanes Forest

Unless you are staying in Villa la Angostura, chances are that you will visiting los Arrayanes National Park on a day trip from Bariloche. So let’s cover how to get from Bariloche to Villa La Angostura first.

Obviously skip ahead if you are already planning to stay in Villa La Angostura. There’s some recommendations on where to stay later.

Bariloche to Villa La Angostura

There are 8 buses per day running from Bariloche to Villa la Angostura, with the first one 8am. This is the one that we took and would recommend because the next one isn’t until 9:45am. The price is $165 ARS (£3 GBP / $4 USD). The bus company is Via Bariloche.

You can buy tickets to get to Villa Angostura from Bariloche either in the town centre or at the bus terminal. The ticket office address in town is Mitre, 321. It’s right on the main street and easy to find. You’ll need your passport details and can pay in cash or card.

It’s best to book a few days in advance, especially in high season. On your day of travel the bus from Bariloche to Villa la Angostura leaves from the bus terminal. The number 20 and 21 local buses go through centro to the bus terminal around every 20 minutes.

There’s a stop right outside the Intendencia Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi (San Martin, 24) and it’s around a 10 minute ride. The journey from the bus terminal in Bariloche to Villa la Angostura takes around 1 hour 15 minutes. Don’t forget your passport, they will need to be checked against your tickets.

For the way back we booked the 7pm bus from Villa la Angostura to Bariloche. The one before is 4.30pm so it makes the day trip pretty tight time wise. You would need to take the boat roundtrip as you wouldn’t really have enough time to comfortably walk or hike the route, even one way.

Villa la Angostura is a cute little town too. So we were glad we had a little time to explore it at the end of the day. And there’s a few nice bars where you can grab a happy hour beer before jumping on the bus back to Bariloche, which we were only too happy to do.

Villa La Angostura to Los Arrayanes National Park

Once you arrive in Villa la Angostura bus terminal, walk back onto the main road to the Tourist Information Office – it’s like 2 minutes away. Here you can get a map for Los Arrayanes National Park, a boat schedule and a local bus timetable.

To get from Villa la Angostura to the entrance of Los Arrayanes National Park you can then either walk the 3km or take a local bus. They aren’t that regular, so depending on when you arrive it may be quicker for you walk for 20 minutes than wait. This is what the bus stop looks like.

If you take the 8am bus to Villa la Angostura from Bariloche, as we did, you will comfortably have enough time to get your map and timetables from the Tourist Information Centre and jump on the 10am local bus to Puerto Villa. Note, NOT Puerto Manzana.

Unlike on the local buses in Bariloche where you have to use a Sube card, it is cash only on the local buses in Villa la Angostura. The fare, one way, is $50 ARS (£1 GBP / £1.25 USD) and the drivers give change – within reason.

The journey takes around 5 minutes and there are just two stops. The first is at Bahia Mansa. This is the dock where you take the catamaran boat along the bay route to the end of the Los Arrayanes National Park peninsula.

The second and last is at the entrance to Parque Nacional los Arrayanes and the Bahia Brava dock. This is where you take the catamaran boat along the alternative mountain route. Don’t worry if you get off at the wrong one. It’s a few minutes walk inbetween.

Bosque de Arrayanes by Boat

One of the most popular ways to visit the Arrayanes forest or Bosque de Arrayanes is by boat. The views are spectacular. There are catamarans running each way around the Parque Nacional los Arrayanes peninsula which will give you either bay or mountain views.

As already mentioned, the catamaran for the route along the bay leaves from Bahia Mansa, or Mansa Bay in English. The company is called Catamarán Futaleufú and there are two trips per day.

The first leaves at 11am and returns at 1pm. The second leaves at 2.30pm, returning at 4.30pm. The cost one way is $800 ARS (£15 GBP / $21 USD) per person or $1100 ARS (£21 GBP / $28 USD) for a round trip.

For the mountain route the catamaran leaves from Bahia Brava, or Brava Bay in English. The company running this service is called Catamarán Patagonia Argentina. There are also two trips per day.

The first leaves at 12pm and returns at 2.15pm. The second leaves at 3.15pm, returning at 5.30pm. The cost is slightly cheaper at $700 ARS (£13 GBP / $18 USD) one way and $1000 ARS (£19 GBP / $25 USD) for a round trip. You can pay by cash or card.

Los Arrayanes Catamaran Trip

The sailing time to get from the base of the peninsula to Puerto Quetrihue and the Bosque de Arrayanes at the tip is around 1 hour. So just bear in mind that if you opt for a roundtrip, you will only have an hour to explore the Arrayanes forest before needing to be back on the boat.

There’s lots of information given out aboard the catamaran about los Arrayanes National Park and the history of the area. However it is only in Spanish. When you dock in Puerto Quetrihue you can choose to either walk around with the guide from the boat or go off on your own.

What we opted to do was take the 11am bay route catamaran from Mansa Bay, one way to the peninsula tip. Then hike back along the 12km trail through los Arrayanes National Park – more on that in a bit. But that way we got to spend as long as we wanted with the trees.

You can also do this the other way round. Making your own way along the peninsula through los Arrayanes National Park, then returning to the base by catamaran. Obviously you need to time this so that you have enough time to explore the Arrayanes forest and make the boat.

If you choose this option, it is best to buy your catamaran ticket before you enter los Arrayanes National Park to guarantee you have a spot on the return trip. If you do decide to do it last minute, we saw you could buy catamaran tickets in the tea house.

Hiking to Arrayanes Forest

The trail through los Arrayanes National Park is 12 km one way with the last kilometer at the end of the peninsula being a wooden walkway around the Arrayanes forest. It’s an easy route along a dirt path  with undulations rather than huge slopes up down.

It’s also just one path, so it’s impossible to get lost. If you do, I’m not sure you should be leaving the house. For the most part it’s shaded as you’re literally walking through a huge forest. There’s no water sources until you get to the lagoon at the end so take enough.

It’s totally possible to walk the whole 23 km in one day if you wish and are fit enough. It’s also the cheapest option. But you are effectively walking the same route twice.

As I say, we took the catamaran there and walked back, which we would definitely recommend. We arrived at 12pm and ate lunch on the shore of the lagoon, then wandered around the Arrayanes trees at our leisure. Setting off hiking back through los Arrayanes National Park at at 1:45pm.

Los Arrayanes Hiking Trail

Including venturing off the main path to the two viewpoints, Mirador Bahia Mansa and Mirador Brazo Norte, it took us just over 3 hours to hike back along the peninsula. We got back to the start with plenty of time to take the 5:35pm local bus back into Villa la Angostura.

If you are walking the whole 23km route there and back along los Arrayanes National Park, I’d recommend allowing a minimum of 8 hours. So that you have time for breaks and to enjoy the Bosque de Arrayanes at the end.

If you are getting the boat to Bosque de Arrayanes and cycling back through los Arrayanes National Park, it’s not so easy to find where the trail starts. We walked right past it the first time. It is marked Villa trail but you’ll need to dip under a rope to get off the wooden circuit.

At the end you can drop down onto one of the Nahuel Huapi Lagoon beaches at either side and even take a swim if you like. The water is chilly, even at the height of summer, but great for cooling off after a long hike.

Travel towels are insanely versatile, doubling up as everything from a beach rug or yoga mat to a sarong. This one’s lightweight, super absorbent, quick-drying & soft on your skin, don’t hit the road without one.

Renting A Bike To Los Arrayanes

An alternative option is to rent a bike and cycle the route through los Arrayanes National Park to the Arrayanes forest. There’s plenty of rental shops either in Villa la Angostura (in which case you can just bike the 3 km to the park entrance), or around that start of the trail head.

We checked prices for some available near the entrance to los Arrayanes National Park. They were $500 ARS each for the day, 9:30am – 8pm. This included a helmet, a lock, and a bike pump. You need to leave some ID with them as a deposit. It’s possible to rent kayaks too.

You can take bikes onto the catamarans too, so in case you wanted to go one way by boat and the other cycling that is totally possible too. But you can’t take bikes onto the wooden walkway around the Arrayanes forest. There’s a bike park to leave them at.

If going on the boat and biking back, you’ll need to walk them around to the right off the pier and along the beach to the bike park. Just a note about the route along the peninsula for bikes. There are quite a few steps in parts so you will need to get off and walk in places.

Tickets To Los Arrayanes National Park

Regardless of how you get to the end of the peninsula and bosque de arrayanes, you will need to buy a seperate ticket to los Arrayanes National Park. You can buy these from multiples places near the catamaran ticket places and just inside the entrance to the park.

The cost is $350 ARS (£7 GBP / $9 USD) each per day and you can pay by cash or card. If taking the boat, they will check you have them as you are boarding the respective catamaran.

What To Do In Bosque de Arrayanes

The main point of visiting the Arrayanes forest is obviously for the trees. In case you are on the boat tour and don’t understand Spanish, or simply want to explore on your own, there are a few information boards dotted around in both Spanish and English.

But there is also a cute tea house selling hot drinks, cakes and snacks. The prices were reasonable at $140 ARG (£2.60 GBP / $3.50 USD) for a coffee and a muffin. You can also chill out on the shore of the Nahuel Huapi Lagoon, or on the piers, and take in the views. There are public toilets.

Los Arrayanes Boat Tour

If you’d prefer not to make your own way to Los Arrayanes National Park, there is an excellent lake excursion from Puerto Pañuelo in Bariloche. The boat tour to Arrayanes Forest will also take you to Victoria Island.

After exploring the unique Myrtle Forest, you will be taken to the 1000 year old island. There you can walk along the volcanic beach and see paintings made by indigenous peoples who once lived there.

All tour guides are bilingual and you can opt to be picked up from your hotel in Bariloche if you prefer also.

There’s free parking or transfer services available. Reviews consistently say that the atmosphere is warm and friendly. More like a home than a hostel.

Cómo funcionan los catamaranes gratuitos para ir de Villa La Angostura a Bariloche

El gobierno neuquino dispuso de traslados lacustres sin costo para turistas y residentes debido al derrumbe sobre el tramo de la ruta 40 que une ambos puntos turísticos. en lo que va de agosto, se registró 'la mejor nieve' en 25 años.

Luego del temporal de nieve y lluvia que afectó la zona cordillerana y derivó en un derrumbe de rocas sobre la ruta 40 , el gobierno de la provincia de Neuquén dispuso de un ' bypass lacustre'  para que los turistas y habitantes puedan trasladarse de manera gratuita entre Villa La Angostura y Bariloche.

Con una navegación de entre 5 a 10 minutos por el Lago Nahuel Huapi, que recorre por agua el tramo rutero cortado por un derrumbre, se puede llegar en forma rápida a la perla del territorio neuquino en la Patagonia argentina .

Se trata de dos opciones de navegación que parten desde el embarcadero del Brazo Huemul del Lago Nahuel Huapi , que une a Villa La Angostura con Bariloche.

Desde allí, con los catamaranes Futaleufú y Patagonia se llega a Muelle Viejo  (Puerto Manzano) y a Puerto de Angostura, en Bahía Mansa, servicios turísticos gratuitos para los pasajeros.

“El ritmo invernal, con todas las actividades tanto en el Cerro Bayo como en la gastronomía premium de La Villa están a pleno, con el condimento fundamental de que este mes de agosto contamos con la mejor nieve en los últimos 25 años , concluyeron desde al área de Turismo de Villa la Angostura.

Llegó el invierno y los principales centros de esquí de la Argentina y Chile se preparan con muy buenas expectativas para recibir a miles de turistas ávidos de nieve. Con más cantidad de vuelos, mejor conectividad y promociones y descuentos especiales, la temporada promete extenderse hasta octubre.

Mientras tanto, las obras sobre el tramo de ruta 40 donde se produjo un derrumbe la semana pasada están resolviendo el corte de la traza que permitirá cubrir como siempre el camino terrestre entre La Angostura y Bariloche.

Hasta allí, desde el Aeropuerto de San Carlos de Bariloche y desde la terminal de micros de esa ciudad rionegrina, los trayectos se cumplen con bus de línea y transfer que cada pasajero reserva con nombre y DNI y abona en efectivo el tramo terrestre.

La navegación, por su parte, es gratuita tanto para locales como para turistas. P ara utilizar este servicio primero hay que reservar el catamarán y luego el transporte terrestre.

The charming resort town of Villa La Angostura sits on the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake in the Province of Neuquén, and it’s a destination worth adding to your northern Patagonia travel plans !

Villa La Angostura is surrounded by crystalline lakes, dense forests and rugged mountains, plus its streets are lined with rose bushes which explains why it’s nicknamed ‘the Garden of Patagonia’.

The town itself has a very rustic yet cozy alpine feel with most of the constructions resembling log cabins. Walking its streets feels like something straight out of a woodland fairy tale, but that’s just the magic of Villa La Angostura for you.

This is one of the best spots in Patagonia if you’re looking for a lakeside holiday and rugged mountains!

How to get to Villa La Angostura

First things first, how do you get to Villa La Angostura?

The best way to get to Villa La Angostura is via Bariloche. Bariloche is the gateway to northern Patagonia offering daily inbound flights from all over Argentina, so this is where you’ll most likely fly into.

Once you   get to Bariloche , you can rent a car and do the 1 hour and 20-minute drive to Villa La Angostura along Ruta 40 – a very picturesque 79-kilometre journey along the highway that crosses the length of Argentina from north to south.

Alternatively, you can catch a bus from the Bariloche Bus Terminal. The main bus companies that operate that route are Via Bariloche and Albus.

How many days in Villa La Angostura?

Whether you’re visiting Villa La Angostura for a day or staying for a week, there is no shortage of things to do.

Some people choose to visit Villa La Angostura as a day trip from Bariloche while others will linger for a week of sunshine and lakeside relaxation.

How long you stay is really up to you, however, our recommendation would be to plan for 3-4 days.

You can spend 2 of those days doing the main day trips (Arrayanes Forest and Route of the Seven Lakes) and spend the other 2 days sightseeing around town and soaking in nature.

Things to do in Villa La Angostura

Drive the Road of the Seven Lakes

One of the must-do day trips from Villa La Angostura is to drive the Road of the Seven Lakes , also known as La Ruta de Los Siete Lagos in Spanish.

This is a scenic 107-kilometre drive that stretches from the town of Villa La Angostura in the south to the town of San Martín de Los Andes in the north. The route runs along a stretch of National Route 40, which is the highway that crosses the full length of Argentina from north to south. In other words, it’s epic!

It’s a beautiful journey that goes past snow-capped mountains, dense forests and pristine lakes. Plus, it crosses two national parks: Lanín National Park and Nahuel Huapi National Park.

Driving the Route of the Seven Lakes is something that can be done in one day, independently by renting a car or by joining a guided tour. 

As the name of the drive suggests, there are seven main lakes along this route: Lake Machónico, Lake Escondido, Lake Correntoso, Lake Espejo, Lake Lácar, Lake Falkner, and Lake Villarino.

If you were to drive the Route of the Seven Lakes without making a single stop along the way, it would take just under 2 hours, however, it’s best done as a full day trip with plenty of stops along the way.

Tour Nahuel Huapi Lake by boat

There are quite a few different options when it comes to boat trips on Lago Nahuel Huapi. You can sightsee by catamaran, or sailboat, or even rent your own boat!

Patagonia Sailing offers sailboat tours that range from 1 to 6 hours depending on what you want to see.

Then you have Catamarán Futaleufú , a popular option for those wanting to do a catamaran tour to the Arrayanes Forest.

And if you prefer something more active, there are half-day kayaking tours of Nahuel Huapi Lake where you get to explore rock walls, islands and beaches.

The choice is yours!

Visit the magical Arrayanes Forest

One of the main things to do in Villa La Angostura is to visit the Arrayanes Forest which is believed to have inspired Disney’s Bambi .

What’s so special about this forest, you ask?

Well, this is where you’ll find the arrayán tree which is easily recognized by its cinnamon-coloured bark.

One unusual thing about this tree is that it always feels cool to the touch. This is because its bark is so thin that you can feel the sap inside.

The main part of the Arrayanes Forest sits on the tip of the Quetrihué Peninsula in Los Arrayanes National Park. Most of the trees in that section of the forest are over 300 years old, though there are a few exemplars that have been standing for over 650 years!

You can reach the Arrayanes Forest by boat or on foot, and I would suggest doing both!

You can take a boat there, learn all about the forest’s history on the journey over, and then hike the 12 kilometres back into Villa La Angostura!

The walk back takes about 3 hours to complete and it’s a nice way to enjoy the Patagonian scenery.

Have tea and cake at Cucú Schulz

Our favourite cafe in Villa La Angostura is shaped like a cuckoo clock and its walls are covered in cuckoo clocks. That place is Cucú Shulz !

The Cucú Schulz cake – their very own creation – features a chocolate cake base with semisweet chocolate mousse, chantilly cream, a chocolate glaze and caramelized almonds.

Aside from that, you can order brownie cake, apple pie, cheesecake with wild berries, and my personal favourite, ricotta cake.

They also serve grilled sandwiches, waffles, muffins, alfajores, and don’t get me started on their fancy coffees.

We discovered this place right at the start of our visit and went back multiple times!

The cafe is located on Avenida Arrayanes, which is the main thoroughfare in Villa La Angostura. It is open from 9 am to 9 pm so it’s the perfect spot for breakfast, afternoon tea, or a sweet bite any time of day!

Bahía Mansa & Bahía Brava

Villa La Angostura is a town with two bays: Bahía Mansa, meaning ‘calm bay’, and Bahía Brava, meaning ‘wild bay’.

The two bays are divided by the Quetrihué Peninsula and they are just a 5-minute walk from each other, so you can easily visit them both and see how they live up to their names.

Both bays have their own sandy beaches and they’re particularly popular at sunset.

Visit the lagoons and go birdwatching

If you’re looking for a bit of nature, but you don’t necessarily want to go too far or do anything too strenuous, you can visit the two lagoons in town.

Laguna Calafate is more of a birdwatching spot with bird hides where you can enjoy the local wildlife. They even have posters inside the hides with the names and images of the various birds you can expect to see.

Laguna Verde, on the other hand, is a nice place to go for a walk. The trail is called Sendero de las Lumas and it runs through the forest and follows the lagoon’s shore. It’s a super peaceful spot and we only saw a handful of locals the whole time we were there.

Visit the European-inspired chapel

Another important attraction in Villa La Angostura is the chapel known as Capilla de la Virgen de la Asunción , which dates back to 1936.

The chapel was designed by renowned Argentine architect Alejandro Bustillo, perhaps best known as the man behind the iconic Llao Llao Hotel.

Bustillo was inspired by northern European architecture when building this chapel; it features a mix of wooden logs, stone walls, black roof tiles, stained glass windows and rustic wooden beams in the interior.

The chapel is set in a forested area, so it does feel like a taste of Europe, even if it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where!

Sample the delicious Patagonian Cuisine

It’s no secret that El Esquiador is our favourite restaurant in Villa La Angostura and we went back there again and again to sample a great part of their menu.

One of the dishes they are best known for is the Ciervo a la Cazadora which is a hunter’s stew with deer. It is served on top of boiled potatoes and the meat is super tender – no knives required. If you want to try a classic regional dish, this is it.

Trucha , Spanish for trout, is another item that makes an appearance on many Patagonian restaurant menus. We tried the trout done two different ways: with brown butter and capers, and  ‘Esquiador style’ with cheese and a cream of mushrooms. Both were exquisite!

Pair that with a mixed potato and pumpkin puree, or a side of noisette potatoes and you’ve got magic on a plate.

For dessert, you cannot go wrong with the Flan Casero , a homemade custard dessert with a generous dollop of dulce de leche.

Hang out at El Mercado

El Mercado is a multi-use space in Villa La Angostura meant to capture the magic of the community’s early days when the market was a gathering place.

The space is home to a craft brewery, a tapas bar, a pizzeria, and a few cafes.

It’s a nice spot that mainly draws people in the evenings.

Try all the Patagonian chocolate

Patagonia is renowned for its artisanal chocolate and in Villa La Angostura you have multiple shops to choose from!

A few to consider include:

• La Campiña del Sur
• Punto Chocolate
• Amazonia Chocolateria

There are so many different flavours to sample and you really will want to try them all!

I would suggest ordering an assorted bag and paying by weight so you can try all the unique flavours and discover which ones you like best.

Some of our personal favourites were the dark chocolate with mint cream, the milk chocolate with raspberry cream and anything filled with dulce de leche!

As a bonus, a lot of the chocolate shops in town double as ice cream shops, so your sweet tooth is in for a treat.

See the Correntoso Lake and River

One of the natural attractions in Villa La Angostura is the Correntoso Lake and River.

Correntoso Lake is set within Nahuel Huapi National Park and it flows towards Nahuel Huapi Lake via the Correntoso River.

Correntoso River is considered one of the shortest rivers in the world – it can be anywhere between 200 to 300 meters depending on the water levels – and it’s a super popular destination for fly fishing. Trout abounds especially where the river meets Nahuel Huapi Lake.

Two bridges cross the Correntoso River, one is for vehicles but there is also a smaller pedestrian bridge where visitors can enjoy the beauty of the lake and river.

Go Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is huge in Patagonia, especially when it comes to fishing for trout!

Whether you’re a beginner looking to try fly fishing for the first time, or someone with more experience, local guides will take you wading in some of the best rivers as you search for rainbow trout and brown trout.

Aside from fishing, this is a good opportunity to spot local wildlife like condors, foxes and guanacos.

Hike to lakes and waterfalls

There are lots of hiking opportunities in and around Villa La Angostura.

Whether you’re looking for an easy 1-kilometre loop in the Arrayanes Forest, or something more challenging like the 15.4-kilometre trek to the summit of Cerro Belvedere, there are plenty of options to explore.

All Trails has a great list of treks you can enjoy in Villa La Angostura that includes hikes to rivers, waterfalls, lakes, lagoons and mountain peaks.

Do keep in mind that you need to sign in with the park ranger for some of these trails so they know when to expect you back.

Where to stay in Villa La Angostura

As a resort town, Villa La Angostura offers a myriad of accommodations ranging from log cabins to lakeside resorts, and there really is something for every budget.

There are a few different areas to choose from. If you want to be right in the centre of town, book something in Villa La Angostura. If you’d rather be close to the lake opt for Puerto Angostura which is just south of town. And if you want more of a resort feel, choose something in Puerto Manzano, though you’ll want a car since this is more in the outskirts.

Best time to visit Villa La Angostura

When’s the best time to visit Villa La Angostura, you ask?

Villa La Angostura is a destination that can be visited year-round depending on the activities you want to enjoy.

December, January and February are the summer months so that’s the perfect time to enjoy boating, swimming and other water activities.

Saliendo de Bariloche por la Ruta 237, a 21 Km se encuentra el empalme con la complementaria que conduce a Villa La Angostura.

Esta Villa inolvidable se encuentra ubicada al sur de la Provincia del Neuquén, a 870 Mts sobre el nivel del mar, en el margen noreste del Lago Nahuel Huapi y a solo 82 Km de San Carlos de Bariloche.

Hola Martha,la excursión a Villa La Angostura desde Bariloche se hace todo el año. Puede ser que algunas agencias lo combinen con otros destinos, como San Martin de los Andes. En este link podes averiguar y reservar on line. Si sólo queres hacer Villa La Angostura, te conviene tomar un ómnibus desde la terminal de Bariloche. Saludos!

Caribe patagónico. Las 7 playas más paradisíacas de Villa La Angostura

Agrestes, de perfil familiar, con bares, servicios, deportes o paseos lacustres: guía para elegir el mejor spot a orillas de los lagos patagónicos..

En los alrededores de la villa, a pocos minutos de auto o incluso a pie, hay unas 20 playas públicas para disfrutar de la costa y el agua de los lagos durante el verano.

1. Desembocadura del Río Bonito

Principalmente de arena y una de las más amplias, aparece junto a la desembocadura del Río Bonito, recostándose a lo largo de la orilla del lago Nahuel Huapi. Es muy tranquila y, para quienes quieran disfrutar del sol, una de las playas ideales para la tarde; también tiene sombra junto a los árboles.

Otro diferencial de esta playa: se puede llegar en auto y estacionar en la calle, o bien luego de una caminata por un sendero plano de 1,5 kilómetros que avanza junto al curso del río, atravesando un bosque: esta senda sale desde Fundación Salmónidos.

2. Lago Espejo Grande

Es una de las más populares: el increíble color del agua y su temperatura –entre 18 y 22 grados – convocan. La playa del lago Espejo es de arena, con un muelle de madera en el medio (que la divide en dos) y cuenta con servicio de guardavidas. En la misma costa se encuentran prestadores de deportes lacustres, con alquiler de kayaks y stand up paddle. También hay un parador con mesas al aire libre y servicios, y un estacionamiento muy grande. Antes o después de bajar a la playa, vale la pena hacer unos metros más por la ruta 234, después de la rotonda con ruta 40: hay un mirador para disfrutarla desde arriba, una foto imperdible.

3. Lago Correntoso

El antiguo puente peatonal de madera que cruza el río Correntoso es uno de los puntos turísticos más conocidos de Villa La Angostura. También es la llave de acceso a una atractiva playa: al bajar desde el Camino de Siete Lagos, la misma calle (Cacique Antriao) se convierte en costanera, con un paseo peatonal.

El agua del Lago Correntoso suele ser de las más cálidas de la zona ; la playa que está en la cabecera es de arena volcánica , mientras el sector lateral tiene piedras grandes, cómodas para sentarse. Si se busca sol, es un balneario ideal para visitar durante la mañana y las primeras horas de la tarde. Está ubicado a unos 5 kilómetros del centro, tiene bajada para embarcaciones deportivas y hay salidas en kayaks y pequeñas embarcaciones para recorrer el lago. También hay un completo camping.

4. Playa de Pescadores

Si el plan es disfrutar el atardecer desde la arena, este es un buen spot. Para acceder a la Playa de Pescadores hay que tomar el sendero peatonal que sale a la izquierda del puente peatonal del río Correntoso. Está junto a la desembocadura de ese curso de agua (donde se practica pesca con mosca) en el Nahuel Huapi, y tiene un sector no tan amplio de arena pero desde el que se puede esperar el momento en el que sol se pone por detrás del cordón cordillerano.

5. Bahía Mansa y Bahía Brava

A un lado y al otro del istmo de Quetrihué están estas dos playas, a las que se accede caminando desde el Boulevard Nahuel Huapi (donde hay estacionamientos municipales). A la derecha, antes del ingreso al Parque Nacional Los Arrayanes, está la playa de Bahía Mansa (Bahía San Patricio es su nombre real), más calma, con árboles que dan sombra, juegos de plaza y algunos troncos sobre la arena para sentarse. Al otro lado está la playa de Bahía Brava , más abierta y recta de cara al lago, con servicio de guardavidas y sillas anfibias. En las dos hay muelles desde los que parten paseos embarcados.

6. Bahía Manzano

El barrio de Puerto Manzano es uno de los que cuenta con mayor oferta de alojamiento. En su bahía está el puerto deportivo y también la playa pública que se puede visitar bajando por la calle Los Pinos. Por su ubicación, según la hora del día se puede disfrutar del sol en uno u otro lateral.

La zona tiene un abundante bosque , por lo que la costa combina arena, piedras y árboles por igual en este sector del lado este del lago Nahuel Huapi. Desde Bahía Manzano parten excursiones a bordo de veleros y catamaranes para explorar los alrededores desde el agua.

7. Bosque de Arrayanes

Para quienes emprenden la caminata por el Bosque de Arrayanes , la playa es uno de los premios que entrega la misión cumplida. En e l punto más lejano al que se puede acceder a través de los senderos –luego de la tradicional casa de té y el punto de información turística– hay una silenciosa playa pedregosa, muy amplia, en la que se puede hacer picnic y descansar con vista al lago. Si se llega a bordo de un catamarán, el amarre será en el muelle de esta playa.
