Excess 15 Boat Review

Catamaran 15

Excess catamaran 15. Excess world and explore perfectly designed catamarans inspired by racing for cruising pleasure.

Right up front, let me say three things about the new Excess 15, which I got to sail with my Boat of the Year colleagues this past fall in ocean waters off Fort Lauderdale, Florida: It’s a big, roomy cruising cat that’s super easy to handle and really fun to sail. OK, make it four things: We all liked the boat. A lot.

Excess Catamarans is a new brand, just two years old, launched by French builder Group Beneteau , and designed to reach a segment of the multihull market where it saw an opening: namely monohull sailors who appreciate the actual sailing aspect of cruising but who are open to the creature comforts a multihull has to offer.

Hey, that’s me!

I do the majority of my sailing on a single hull. I appreciate the thrill when the rail occasionally dips into the water. I like the feedback that I get from the wheel, the water rushing past, a little spray in my face from time to time. But then again, some of my favorite adventures have taken place on two hulls. Lounging on the tramp in a pretty anchorage, power reaching from island to island, plenty of room to take family and friends along, private cabins and multiple spaces to gather—what’s not to like about those aspects of a cruising cat?

I found that the Excess 15 borrowed liberally from both worlds. It is spacious, can be loaded up with options, and everybody aboard is going to want to take a turn at the wheel. Trust me on this; the 15 is downright sporty to drive, especially with the code zero unrolled.

The boat’s standard configuration is a square-top main and self-tending jib, but Excess also offers what it calls its Pulse package, with a 3-foot-taller mast, bowsprit and code zero set on a continuous-line furler. We got to sail this power-packed solent-rig version, and it’s the one I’d consider if I were writing a check.

Upwind, the self-tending jib makes the boat simple to singlehand. In 10 to 12 knots of wind, the speedo hovered in the high 7-knot range, and tacking required only a turn of the wheel and adjustment of the Harken electric traveler. When we bore off onto a reach, we lost a knot or so of speed, but conditions were perfect to furl the jib and deploy the big reacher. Immediately, the speedo jumped to 10 and change, and off we went.

I found that the locations of the twin wheels—aft and outboard on either transom—were also a value add. I’ve sailed aboard cats with the helm on a flybridge or raised seat adjacent to the aft bulkhead, and I’ve felt disconnected from the water, and sometimes the rest of the crew if they’ve wandered off to some other corner of the boat. On the Excess, the interaction with others on board seemed more monohull-like, with everyone in the cockpit and within earshot.

RELATED: Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 54 Boat Review

Said cockpit features an inviting dining table to port surrounded by an L-shaped couch, a large lounge opposite, and a padded bench seat across the transom between fold-down helm seats. Overhead, the center of the Bimini slides open to let the sunlight pour in, and provides an excellent view of the mainsail while underway. On the boat we sailed, cockpit gatherings were further encouraged by adding a sink, fridge and ice maker to the amenities.

In the saloon, glass windows all around and a large slider door aft offer a 360-degree look at the world, while also providing relatively good visibility forward from the helms. An L-shaped galley with sink, stove, oven and microwave is located in the aft port corner of the main cabin; opposite is a drawer-style fridge and freezer, with more counter space above them. A second large table and another L-shaped couch are forward.

The boat we sailed had a traditional three-cabin layout, with the owner’s quarters occupying the starboard hull; two en suite guest cabins filled the port hull, along with another freezer amidships. The boat can also be configured with four en suite berths, or with six cabins and six heads (two additional crew berths are available in the forepeaks), which should prove popular with the charter crowd.

The base price for the 15 is $737,000, but the boat we sailed, delivered to the US and loaded with options—including a bow thruster and FLIR cameras—is right around $950,000, reflecting the benefits and costs of living and sailing to excess.

charter programs & tax advantages

This catamaran is immediately available for purchase and can be placed in a charter fleet to take advantage of the 2020 tax program before the end of the year! It is the LEAST EXPENSIVE way to own a yacht!

A yacht or boat business is a fairly simple concept and is structured much like any other for profit business. By placing a yacht into a corporation (usually an LLC) and operating it actively for profit, either directly or through a third party management company, the owner is able to generate substantial tax advantages that further offset the cost of ownership.

Excess 15 Details

The Excess 15 is the flagship of the Excess line of catamarans. Measuring 48’5” LOA, its beam is 26’4”, and draft is 4’7”. This is a big catamaran, capable of sleeping up to 14 people in its optional six-cabin layout.

Like all Excess catamarans, the Excess 15 is intended to make performance a priority on the modern cruising catamaran. Based on a hull shared with the Lagoon 50, the builder shaved a full ton of weight out of the boat, and in light air, that is quite noticeable. Where other cats are motoring in light air, the Excess 15 continues sailing, using its asymmetrical spinnaker or Code 0 to harness the breeze.

Group Beneteau created the Excess brand to showcase its innovation in building boats that sailors will love to sail while also providing the benefits and comfortable accommodations of a modern cruising catamaran. The Excess 15 does this particularly well and will prove a popular alternative for cruisers who need the space and accommodations of a big catamaran.

There are two aft helm stations, with unrestricted visibility forward over wide side decks, much like sailing a monohull. The lack of window tinting gives the person at either helm great visibility across the saloon to the other side of the boat. Any small blind spot can be eliminated by leaning across the helm seat a few inches. Great sight lines were important design criterion for the Excess line.

As the primary helm, the starboard station has all halyards and sheets led aft, with Harken winches at both helms to assist in raising and unfurling the sail and adjust the sheets. The builder includes dedicated bags to hold the jumble of lines that normally clutter the cockpit and helm.

To provide the highest degree of connection between sails and rudders, the steering system uses Dyneema lines as steering cables to provide a high level of feedback at the wheel. One will be able to feel developing weather helm and adjust sails or course accordingly.

There are full engine instrumentation and navigation modules at each helm station, and a small bimini over each helm. The helms can be enclosed as well.

The Excess 15 comes in three configurations: a three-cabin layout with three heads (with separate showers), a four-cabin layout with four heads (with separate showers), and a six-cabin layout with six heads (showers are part of the head). Clearly the layout with three cabins will be the owner version of this boat.

The standard boat has two water tanks, each with a capacity of 63 gallons. There is a 32-gallon holding tank in each hull. And the Excess 15 has two aluminum fuel tanks that each hold 137 gallons of fuel for the pair of 57hp Yanmar 4JH57 saildrives.

The Excess 15 cockpit and interior offer enormous living spaces, light and bright because of the builder’s choice of light fabric, honey-colored furniture, white wall covering, and sand plywood flooring. The many windows and opening hatches provide excellent ventilation.

The saloon is much like a large living room, with an aft-facing galley, to satisfy any gourmet chef, with stainless-steel appliances and plenty of storage. Visibility in the saloon is fully 360 degrees. A large saloon table, surrounded by a large L-shaped settee and moveable bench seat, is electrically raised and lowered to serve as coffee table during the day and then raise and unfold when it needs to be a dining table for a large party.

Lockers and drawers are plentiful around the boat and in all staterooms.

The starboard hull is the master stateroom, and the full length of the interior functions as a master suite, including his and her’s vanities and sinks. A huge forward shower is also an exceptional feature on this catamaran.

There are many options for the Excess 15 and performance packages to improve its sailing capabilities, especially in light air. The Pulse Line pack includes a taller mast for greater sail area, a squared-off mainsail and self-tacking jib in a higher quality gray, tri-radial sail material. The package also equips the boat with all deck hardware for a spinnaker pole and hardware/furler for a Code 0.

Also included with this optional package are bright orange composite steering wheels, and special hull graphics.

The benefits of the Pulse Line pack mean one can shut down the engine sooner or continue sailing even in light air. And the boat will look more like a boat set up for racing...while those aboard enjoy life on a luxurious modern catamaran.

The Excess 15, especially with the hull graphics and colorful trim, will turn heads as she sails past slower cats and monohulls. She is lighter and more slippery than her Lagoon counterpart. And while the competent Lagoon will safely take you anywhere in the world at 6-7 knots, the Excess 15 will be a rocket ship by comparison.

And that is the essence of the Excess line. Be immoderate.

Byeon Woo-seok's agency responds to controversy around excessive airport security measures following National Human Rights Commission report

O n Monday, July 15, Byeon Woo-seok's agency and security team issued an apology for their alleged excessive security measures for the Korean actor. The statement followed a report from the National Human Rights Commission, filed by one of the airport users, who criticized the actor's security team for their excessive and allegedly extreme measures.

Previously, on July 12, when Byeon Woo-seok was spotted at the Incheon International Airport en route to Hong Kong, controversy arose regarding the behavior of his security team. Complaints included the guards' use of flashlights to prevent pictures being taken of the actor, checking the tickets of fellow lounge users, blocking gates, and more.

A complaint was subsequently filed with the National Human Rights Commission, stating that these measures interrupted and affected the lives of other airport users. In response, the agency, Varo Entertainment, and the CEO of the actor's security team issued a statement apologizing for the incident.

"Hello, This is Varo Entertainment. We deeply apologize for the incident where airport users were inconvenienced during our artist's departure from Incheon Airport on the 12th while performing security duties."

Byeon Woo-seok's agency releases statement apologizing for the recent excessive airport security measures controversy

Following the incident, an anonymous netizen filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Committee, explaining that they were negatively affected by Byeon Woo-seok's security team at the Incheon International Airport . Their complaint read:

"Should violations be found, I demand strict measures be taken, including requesting the commencement of an official investigation by the Prosecutor General or the head of the relevant investigative agency under Article 34 (Cooperation between Investigative Agency and Commission) Paragraph 1 of the same Act."

As the incident continued to gain attention online, Byeon Woo-seok's agency released an apology statement. In addition to the above-mentioned quote, Varo Entertainment's statement included:

"Firstly, after recognizing the actions of the security personnel who flashed lights at airport users, we requested them to stop. Although we could not be aware of the gate, tickets, and detailed on-site security situation at the scene, we deeply feel a moral responsibility for any unfortunate incidents during the entire security process and sincerely apologize to the inconvenience airport users."

The statement further added:

"We will thoroughly check and ensure that such inconveniences do not occur again for airport users and everyone involved. Once again, we apologize for causing concern."

Meanwhile, the CEO of the security team apologized for their actions and the inconvenience caused. The CEO reportedly contacted multiple Korean press outlets, including My Daily, admitting that their security might have been unnecessarily heavy and strict. While they were trying to protect the actor , they regretted causing inconvenience to other airport users.

Additionally, the bodyguard who flashed lights at people to prevent people from taking pictures of Byeon Woo-seok also released a statement apologizing for his actions. While netizens were concerned about the delay in response and action from Varo Entertainment, they are pleased to learn that the issue has been settled.

catamarano excess 15

A dangerous heat wave is gripping the area, with today's high temperatures expected to soar to near 97. The heat index will make it feel even hotter, with values possibly reaching a scorching 106. Residents are urged to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The scorching conditions will continue into Tuesday, with sunny skies and highs near 98. Heat index values could once again climb to 106.

Relief from the heat may come in the form of storms later in the week.

The unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue into Wednesday night with showers and thunderstorms likely. There's a chance of heavy rainfall, with some areas potentially receiving up to three-quarters of an inch.

King Topper

Kelly Richardson makes her New York Times Crossword debut.

King Letsie III of Lesotho, receiving the crown that began his second reign.

By Sam Corbin

Jump to: Today’s Theme | Tricky Clues

TUESDAY PUZZLE — I really think that you’re going to love today’s crossword puzzle, constructed by Kelly Richardson. On the off-chance that you don’t, Ms. Richardson has done you the favor of including the most diplomatic way of saying so right here in her grid.

Today’s puzzle also continues our recent streak of unusually tough Tuesdays; one misdirection in the top right quadrant is especially dastardly. That said, don’t be intimidated if you’re just beginning your crossword journey! The challenge makes you a better solver. (And don’t make me tap the “It’s OK to look things up” sign.)

Today’s Theme

The more you sit with this theme, the stronger it becomes. I am alluding, of course, to the [blend at the heart of this puzzle] (51A), which stacks three varieties of tea: PEACH (37A), which is [popular in the South]; PEKOE (43A), [a major export of Sri Lanka]; and ASSAM (46A), [named for a region in India]. And they’re in a teacup of black squares!

You may prefer to drink tea over ice, but, as pointed out by a [1959 Marilyn Monroe film] (14A) that doubles as a comment on the drink, SOME LIKE IT HOT.

And, should you take a sip of the maximalist blend at the heart of the puzzle, you may be tempted to utter the final revealer phrase, which, as I mentioned, is also a diplomatic option for sharing crossword opinions: NOT MY CUP OF TEA [51A].

Tricky Clues

1A. The term for a [Group of cards in hearts or bridge] is a TRICK — and it’s a cruel one, indeed, for anyone who can’t remember the last time they picked up a deck of playing cards.

62A. I hadn’t the foggiest idea of what to call a [Gift set for a newborn]. The last gift I purchased for a friend’s soon-to-arrive daughter was a sheet of temporary tattoos, thinking only of how hip she’d look compared with other babies. The answer is LAYETTE, the first set of clothes a newborn wears, presumably while lying down.

1D. You might describe something [Colored like saddle shoes] as TWO-TONE, but it’s not intuitive here: As an adjective, the term sometimes takes a D at the end, and that way it would have more obviously matched the word “Colored.”

6D. A stroke of brilliant ambiguity: [Martin of “Only Murders in the Building”] could refer to one of two stars in the series: Martin Short or STEVE Martin.

11D. [Invariably] has a few synonyms. “Always,” for instance, would fit neatly here. The correct answer is two words, a phrase rarely used in common speech: AS EVER.

21D. It’s embarrassing to think that I’ve watched season upon season of “Law & Order: SVU” only to be stumped by a [Plea that waives the right to a trial]: NO CONTEST.

Constructor Notes

Hi, Wordplay readers! I’m a northern Michigander who loves running, stand-up paddle-boarding and traveling. I’m also a freelance writer and a regular contributor to my hometown newspaper. This puzzle started steeping last summer, when my husband, my brother-in-law and I were enjoying afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm. As the tea leaf remnants swirled in the bottom of my cup, I saw a grid revealed (just kidding). But my thanks to the Grand Hotel, for serving up an experience that was very much my cup of tea. Thank you to the editing team for their guidance through my New York Times debut. I love how the puzzle turned out. And thank you to my husband, who carefully considered my laptop screen every time I turned to him and said, “Does this look like a cup to you?”

D.C.-area forecast: Oppressively hot today and tomorrow, with triple digit highs

An excessive heat warning is in effect for heat indexes up to 105 to 110.

catamarano excess 15

* Excessive-heat warning from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. *

Today’s daily digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

1/10: Hot as blazes. Thought about going 0, but I’m in a generous mood.

Express forecast

  • Today: Brutally hot. Afternoon storm possible. Highs: 97 to 103.
  • Tonight: Partly cloudy, muggy. Lows: 74 to 81.
  • Tomorrow: Punishing heat continues. Highs: 97 to 103.

Forecast in detail

After hitting 101 on Sunday, we’re staring down what could be our hottest four-day stretch since at least 2016 and perhaps 2012. Highs on each of the next three days have a chance to reach the triple digits. Factoring in the humidity, it will feel 5 to 10 degrees hotter.

This is serious and potentially dangerous heat, especially for vulnerable groups such as the homeless, older adults and outdoor workers. Find ways to stay cool, hydrate and avoid strenuous exercise in the hottest parts of the day. Mercifully, the heat wave will end by Thursday.

Today (Monday): If your walk to work involves more than a few minutes outside, you may need a shower by the time you arrive. The heat will be palpable early in the day and will get worse until peaking in the mid-to-late afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 90s and low 100s, challenging record highs of 100 at Reagan National, 98 at Dulles and 102 at BWI Marshall. Factoring in the humidity (dew points near 70), it will feel like 105 to 110. Like Sunday, a few gusty downpours could pop up, but most of us stay dry. Light winds from the west and southwest at 5 to 10 mph offer little relief. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Partly cloudy and rather sultry. For areas near downtown, it will probably hold in the 90s until late in the evening with lows only settling near 80. In our cooler areas, lows will be closer to 75. Confidence: Medium-High

Follow us on Facebook , Twitter , and Instagram for the latest weather updates. Keep reading for the forecast through the weekend...

Tomorrow (Tuesday): It’s like today but the chance of a shower or storm is lower. Highs again reach the upper 90s and low 100s with peak heat indexes from 105 to 110. The record highs of 104 at the three airports (set in 1988) are a bit of a stretch but not out of the question. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: It’s another uncomfortably muggy night with lows probably around 80 downtown and in the 70s elsewhere. There’s a small chance of a shower or thunderstorm late night as a front draws closer. Confidence: Medium-High

A look ahead

We’ll have one more chance to hit the century mark on Wednesday , with heat indexes up to 105 or so, but a cold front will sweep into the area. As it clashes with the steamy air, expect numerous showers and storms in the afternoon and evening, some of which will probably be intense. Showers and storms should decrease after sunset, with overnight lows in the 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

On Thursday , the cold front slips to our south but is close enough to keep a chance of showers and storms in the forecast, especially south and east of the District during the afternoon and evening. It’s not as hot with highs in the mid- to upper 80s. After any evening storms, it’s partly cloudy Thursday night, with lows from 70 to 75. Confidence: Medium

Friday is setting up to be the week’s nicest day, with partly sunny skies, moderate humidity and highs in the mid- to upper 80s. Partly cloudy at night with lows from 65 to 70 in our cooler areas and 70 to 75 downtown. Confidence: Medium

The front that stalled to our south on Thursday and Friday may try to lift north on Saturday , bringing clouds and a chance of showers and storms, especially south and east of Washington. As the front moves north of the area on Sunday, temperatures and humidity increase. Highs on Saturday are probably in the 80s before perhaps eclipsing 90 on Sunday. Lows should mostly be in the 70s. Confidence: Medium
