Let's Get to Know Each Other

Let's connect, cl 16 sailboat.

CL 16 was introduced in 1967-68, and it is a Canadian-designed 16’ sloop sailboat. It was designed by Henry Croce and Ken Lofthouse in Mahone Bay, NS. CL 16 is considered to have a similar design to the Wayfarer dinghy but with a few changes and upgrades. In 1968 its production was transferred to Toronto from Mahone Bay.

Look up on the web under cl16 sailboat. There are listings for the boat. THis is a Canadian built boat so freight across the border might be a tad high. I doubt you will find any used sails.

Thank you for your reply. I have searched adds up and down. I may just need to bite the bullet and buy new sails for one of the boats. Will have to get to cleaning a few of the others and get them on the market quick.

Tom G P-21

The design is based on the Wayfarer which there are a lot of them out there. You might want to check the sail plan and see if you can find one that works for your boat. Also, there are Used sail places like Bacon Sails that you might try. Good luck with your new fleet.

Good information Tom

Thanks all. "Fleet" is right! My yard is looking full right now! Looks like I have a few extra masts and a boob with two nice sails that I have no clue what they go to. Not any of the boats that I bought.

LadyHawk, Are you handy? (all those boats . . . I hope so) Can you sew? My wife and I made a new mainsail for our Lancer 25 a couple of years ago. Did the whole thing on her Kenmore machine circa 1981. It did great. The kit for that sail was about $500 but your 16 will be significantly smaller and cheaper. Might be a way to go.

Handy, yes. I own a paddleboard shop so I do fiberglass work all the time. Sewing, no I don't. I do know friends that do. Where did you get you kit dscribner?

Sailrite, see link below. The have some good instructional videos. http://www.sailrite.com/

This will show my lack of knowledge with bigger boat sails.... Can you fit another brand's sail to your boat if the dimensions are close? Like the O-Day Dysailer mainsail is very close to the specs of the CL16 main. Would that work or not at all? Any info would be appreciated as I already stated that I have very little knowledge here. Thanks!

A qualified "yes" - the other sail would have to be a little smaller in order to pull it tight when you hoist it, otherwise you would have to be willing to cut the larger sail down & re-sew it to make it fit.

Thanks SailormanDan!

Seller's Description

CL16, 1980 16 ft. classic daylsailer. As you probably know, the CL16 is a Wayfarer clone, built in Canada by CL Boatworks. They built them with a double hull, hence it is unsinkable. (if you have a chainsaw, you can prove it! After you own it)

The boat is in great shape. 2 white sails in very nice condition. All the rigging is ready for the water. The trailer is ready to go anywhere. Older evinrude 2.5 hp motor is really cute, starts right up and suits the boat well. in Woodstock, ‘Sailing Capital of the Universe’, New York. $2000 or phone 845 544 5373

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Based on the Ian Proctor designed WAYFARER. CL = Croce & Lighthouse.

Are the current spreaders foil shaped or just tubes? You should be able to get generic spreader stock through a rigger and cut them to length. You could also make your own spreaders. I had a 20ft race boat years ago and I made spreaders out of wood, and then wrapped them with a couple of layers of carbon fiber just for fun. Sent from my SM-G960W using Tapatalk

I think I would take the suspect spreader to a local rigger. They are usually not too specialized as far as how it is made. Looks like a fun lil' boat.

I see you already ordered parts. But CL 16s are pretty much Wayfarer clones. Most parts should be close to interchangeable. https://www.tridentuk.com/gb/boats-and-catalogues/wayfarer-parts-catalogue.html

Yes, I think building the spreaders myself will be the best way to get back on the water. But thanks a lot for that great Wayfarer site ! I had looked at Selden as they make a Wayfarer mast but seems they no longer make the simple aluminum tube spreaders I have.

  1. CL 16

Croce and Lofthouse were temporarily left without a business so they created a new 16 foot sailboat in fibreglass to replace the wooden Wayfarer; hence the CL16 was born in all fibreglass construction." There was a bit of controversy here as the CL 16 is identical in shape of wetted hull and sail plan to the Wayfarer, but has an altered cockpit.

  2. CL 16 questions

    1) I want the boat to be performance orientated but also with a high degree of stability for a sailing dinghy. And yes I know an increase in one decreases the other. And I know that dinghy's are inherently unstable compared to a keel boat. 2) I want it to be easily trailered and rigged by one person.

  3. 1980 CL16 vs 1984 O'Day 17 Daysailer

Been looking for used sailboats and came across these two options listed in some local papers.. 1980 CL16 (C&L Boatworks), which seems to be a version of the "Wayfarer". 1984 O'Day 17 Daysailer. Thoughts on pros/cons of these two boats for my needs... as long as their condition is reasonable.. prices are similar.. around $2K with a trailer..

The CL16 are in great shape so I have decided to keep one to sail this year and sell the other now. My plan is to sell off these boats to help fund my future family boat.
