Our transom swim platforms are lighter, stronger and impervious to water migration. Our custom mounting brackets are 316L stainless steel.

Our maintenance free fiberglass transom swim platforms are available in various sizes and configurations. Each is finished with a non skid surface for passenger and crew safety. The construction is a fiberglass and high density foam core composite. The platforms are fabricated to fit the boat’s transom curve. Options include gel coat color matching, * custom mounting hardware, rub rails, and boarding ladders. Records of most transom curves are on file.

Cruisers 48 Cantius

In regions like the Great Lakes, the Northwest and the subtropics of the Southeast, time on the water can be curtailed by either the short summer season of the north or the sometimes unbearable heat of the south. This is especially true if you have an express model with just one helm open to the sky. The designers at Cruisers didn’t waste time scratching their heads before they developed a gorgeous solution for comfortable cruising in the sweltering heat or withering cold. And it’s available in their latest, the 48 Cantius express cruiser.

It was spitting rain under a blanket of fog as I stepped aboard the 48 at its Oconto, Wisconsin, berth on Lake Michigan. Instead of having to unzip curtains and fumble through them, my host tucked his fingers into a notch on the aft sliding door and slipped it aside, opening the salon to the teak-rich cockpit. When I walked inside, instead of being shrouded in murky eisenglass, I was invited into a bright and open salon with a short step to the bridge deck to starboard and a comparable step to the dinette to port. A portside lounge and a starboard wet bar made this the central gathering place on board, whether the salon was opened or closed to the aft deck.

John Viestenz, my host, clicked the door shut behind us with a fingertip, and, though the uncomfortable weather was shut out, our crew was enveloped by the majesty of the waterway, with a 360-degree view so inviting it was like we were still participating in the outdoor experience, not escaping it. Heat was not needed but it was available, as was air conditioning, for perfect climate control. Ducts at the helm and console, along with those strategically arranged around the salon, allowed for tuning the indoor temperature to perfection.

We called this the helm salon for lack of a better way to distinguish it from the main cabin below. In the helm salon, a dark wenge sole and woodwork accents contrasted beautifully with the bright eggshell vinyl upholstery. Well lit by the 360-degree glass enclosure, the area was a contrast between light and dark — sky and water — with a feng shui-like harmony all around.

At the helm, we had a perfect view of our surroundings with no blind spots. Even when we were fairly hard over, our view to the inside of our turn was preserved — at a time when you’d expect the hardtop to dip down and obscure the surroundings. A dual helm seat left room for a companion, and instrumentation was well-positioned so we had no difficulty in monitoring engine systems and also found it easy to adjust or select screens on the chart plotters. Ergonomics were good, letting us sit comfortably, one hand on the throttle and one on the helm. Stand-up driving was accommodated by the flip-up bolster.

Here’s the trick that made the salon so inviting. Forward of the helm, instead of installing a large dash panel before the windshield — a huge expanse of wasted space — the Cruisers design team opened this area up to the second salon below. That too followed the dark-wood motif in the floors and cabinetry, but so much light came in through the windshield above and from the portlights that the space was well-lit even without additional lighting. Incredible options for entertaining abounded on the 48 Cantius, thanks to the open layout.

Would the 48, with all its glass and hardtop, feel confining on a summer day? Not at all. Slide the cabin door aside and touch a button to open the sunroof and welcome in light and air. You can even open a window on the windshield to further improve the open-air feel. We’ve seen this airy arrangement on sedan bridges before, but never integrated so well with a sunroof and hardtop, and rarely as well done on an express cruiser.

Would it have been nice to open that sunroof even more? Yes, but that would have interfered with wiring and the radar array. It also would have been nice to slide the port and starboard windows open, but the curved styling of the glass would be lost. And, with the climate-control possibilities and the option of opening the windshield for a breeze, we were more than content with this innovative design.

Belowdecks, there is a full galley with a nearly home-size refrigerator, a microwave and an abbreviated stovetop. All of it is set in a granite-look counter with a large stainless-steel sink with state-of-the-art faucets.

The forward stateroom is big and features a queen berth. Convenient to it are a vanity, head and shower. A hatch above gives good natural lighting, supported by portlights on either side. Entry to the master is aft of the salon stairway. Inside, 6 feet, 6 inches of headroom and another queen berth pamper the owner. A larger en suite head offers stylish fixtures and comfortable space, even with the door closed.

Under way, the Cantius was a beautiful machine, integrated with Volvo IPS drives that included digital throttle and shift and silky-smooth steering. Acceleration was steady, and stepping to plane gave us very little bow rise for a cruiser this size. The position of the IPS drives, forward of the trailing edge of the running surface, make this possible. In addition, props are turned forward, getting a clean bite on undisturbed water. Both drives spin individually, and in a turn, the engine inside the circle steers at a tighter angle, adding to the stability and maneuverability I experienced.

Stepping around outside the boat, we found wide footing from stern to bow and ample nonskid surfaces. Should one need to manage the anchor windlass from the bow, there is plenty of flat deck space for good footing. We mentioned that the handrails along the salon roof fell just short of the points of entry, and Viestenz let us know that Cruisers already had plans to set new rails with more convenient positioning.

Ending the tour in what is usually a cramped engine room can be anticlimactic. But on the Cantius, there was surprisingly generous walk-around space and headroom. Access to the outboard side of the engines was convenient, and practically everything could be serviced while standing.

As we stepped over the 48’s enormous swim platform to disembark, Viestenz mentioned that it could be enhanced with an optional hydraulic lift for tender or PWC launch.

MarineMat Snap-It series is the industry’s only patented removeable EVA Foam decking. The stainless-steel snaps allow the user to easily remove the mats for convenient cleaning and storage. Snap-It Series mats can easily replace your worn, smelly carpet with low maintenance, comfortable Marine Mat products. Available also is MarineMat Stick-It Series mats for a more permanent installation. Our PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) will easily adhere to most surfaces including molded in non-skid surfaces.

*All Marine Mat products are custom made. Once your order is finalized the MarineMat product is not returnable or refundable.

Regular cleaning can be accomplished by simply washing the mats with mild soap and water and a medium to stiff bristled brush. Boat washing soap or other mild detergent, water and a hose works well. Although Marine Mat is stain resistant, certain things, such as food, wine, fish blood or grease may stain the mats if they are left in contact for an extended period of time. It is always best to clean or rinse away any spills as soon as possible. Work the cleaner into the stain with a stiff bristle brush, brushing with the grain texture, and rinse with a hose to finish.

Snap-It Notes Remove Snap-It Mats periodically to clean the underside of the mats and the deck below the mats. Water and debris may get trapped underneath and damage your deck. Simply remove the mats and set them on a driveway, dock or deck and use the same method as in the boat. Let the mats air dry by laying them flat or hanging them up. Once dry, reinstall the mats or roll them up for storage in a compartment or cabin of the boat. MarineMat is very resistant to most weather conditions and is designed to be in the elements while being used. It is however best to keep your boat, kayak or other vehicle covered or stored indoors while not being used to extend the life of your mats. MarineMat should be treated and cared for the same way you care for vinyl marine seats, carpet or other floor coverings. Excessive continuous exposure to sunlight and water will decrease the life of your mats. Snap-It Notes Snap-It Series Mats should be treated like snap-in carpet. The mats are designed to be wet while in use or for cleaning, but not stored in water or on a continuously wet deck. The mats will perform best if stored snapped in place over a dry clean deck and under cover when not in use. If the boat will be stored uncovered and in the elements, remove the mats and store in a head compartment or other storage area of the boat. Material Note MarineMat foam has a memory. If you notice an indent in the mats when you remove your cover from the support pole or any other area where something with some weight has been sitting for an extended period, that mat will rebound over a short period of time back to its original shape. Refracted Light Much like a magnifying glass certain things on a boat can cause focused light which can cause blushing or burning of the surface on your MarineMat. This is a very rare occurrence while actually using the boat, but if you leave your boat on a dock, lift or trailer and the sun is at the correct angle this can occur. The best way to avoid this is to cover the boat when you are not using it or in the case of the Snap-it Series Mats, remove them. If this happens to your mats they are not ruined. The damage usually looks like a wet spot (a little darker) and over time this will blend or weather back into the rest of the mat area and become less noticeable. Things to Avoid

• Sharp Objects like knives or tools dragging across the surface.
• Pressure washing due to the risk of shredding or cutting the mats.
• Extended contact with petroleum based products. This can cause staining that may not be able to be removed.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.
